We. We go home & the grip gives way & the skis splay & suddenly— Peter Piper picked some peppers. Busted.

THe porch It wrapped around the back, had astroturf, mildew spots, a swing, homemade water skis, and a dinner triangle. I think it’s the dinner triangle I remember most vividly because it rusted and rang, rang, rang. From it, I watched Frank and Doug tool around on an awfully temperamental golf cart. Dad cleaned fish, tossing their triangular heads into the bushes. I swung with my sister until Mom pronounced us dry enough to come in; come in and eat popsicles, hot dogs, fruit-roll-ups, and goldfish. You

could not see the lake for all the trees and birds and snakes and bugs. You could not make anything out at night, playing Boggle under mothy lights that made everyone look more tired. Perhaps we were. I have no single memory. It’s a continual swoop of movement in and out, packing and vacuuming, flippity flopping across all summers, all time, a stack of mulberry pancakes, a plastic whiffle ball singing past me.

Family Family must be family in order to shut up. Shut up family. They must be listening, i.e, wearing a listening cap. Capped cap. As in head here & hear. Cap to be worn in or outside the family that pretends to be interested in order to be welcoming, to get the drift of that unknown family-thing speaking so very faintly, so very slowly, underneath piecemeal sentences & sandwich particulates. shhhhh. It plinks, it plinks, as thinking so often follows up, driving it home.

Who Art Our father is putting butter in issues of fruit of pears of apples & oranges. Our father is apparent and even suspended a little— he flicks small geometries out, grapes out of their situations. If our father were the client he would say follow the colander and follow we would, flipping around (remember)

the literal PDF of snow. Our father was so kind, kind-of, even when left a little un- “toward.” Riddle me this and I will oh don’t you worry about all-knowing summer sausages, boxed drinks, cheese—I have lots of pockets, pulling fast our tripward lugging it so that it comes apart in white waves. All the worse for these sufferings, pushy and cloudlike; we ski, ski, ski

“Dig in” - A Fable The hole in the mud is encircled with families. Each family makes a day of moving mud from the hole. Removing the thistles and sticks and mud stuck to leaves. And cleaning the shape of the hole, the circle. Everyone is in it a little, the circle of earth that appears, the front. The families yell instructions to one another, brotherly and sisterly advice. There’s no way to make the hole just one way. There is ever a retardant on the outer edges. A facing. A revelation of surface a little off.

These families make camp with a fire and fare. They loop their tools around them. There is a time for the cleaning of hands. There is a time for the cleaning of teeth. A time for revealing all that is empty and full. All that “all,” they say, stuffed. The food on the table, in zero dimensions.

Slalom The slats of blinds beside my nightstand sag and so much sun comes through I think the room is made of light. I think of rising, of yeast and paper kites glued to balsa wood. Of heat, the centers of biscuits, the lake all summer when wasps swung from the boat motor as Mom gave the cord a good yank. Then rising again on one ski for the first time, the water parting into soft white lilies. I wobbled and fell and the boat came back.

It burns — I always burn and peel the moth-shapes off of my legs. And even though no one has paddled that way in years, the sound is the same sound. Treading water long after everyone left. Mom on the dock in some god-awful visor, Dad clapping because I almost have it.
