Cities are like living beings, it starts at some point of time in history when a few people came together with a common interest. The city then grows organically around its ancient core. The old core of a city very briefly gives us a glimpse into the way the city developed and its social structure. And with the development of the city the core becomes denser. Calcutta is an example of a city which grew over different periods of time under different governments. The British East India Company played a big role in shaping of the present day Calcutta. The area under consideration is Shyambazar, North Calcutta. This part of Calcutta was ‘Indian Residential (mostly dense)’. The housing here is characterized by the Century old Zamindar Bungalows and old dense housing with narrow streets. The housing in that part of Calcutta gives us a glimpse into the social structure of that time; typically characterized by joint family dwellings and dense households. The social interactions present in the location and response of each house to the street gives a uniqueness to the fabric of that place.

At the block level carving the community spaces into a usable forms one of the most important functions to integrate the neighborhood. The sunken center of the Urban Block ensures micro-climate creation along with a community repose which aims at consolidating the 'Para' sentiments. All the further Block Level Master Plan approaches border around this concept.

The 'Transformation Index' is obtained by overlapping several mappings of the Neighborhood Block like Building Health(1), Building Age(2), Road Widening Pressure(5), Courtyard Use(6) etc. This map illustrates how a wave of transformation might travel in this area starting at a vital pivot of change. This pivot could be a recently developed property around the most vulnerable plots. This then causes a ripple of change and slowly the Neighborhood Block might get transformed. But the exact mechanism of the redevelopment decides the character of this location and hence the culture that we leave behind for the future to grow on.

SITE

The site of study was Frazer Town in Bangalore near Cantonment Railway Station. The project started with a photo documentation to understand the place. The documentation revealed a blurred feel of territory which was further investigated in subsequent mappings.

12

13 Today Frazer town is a reflection of its past starting from the location of the important streets to the population density. This portion of the city is a time-line the development and growth a city can experience. Right from old colonial bungalows to modern multi-storied apartments, this area has it all. This allows us to understand the delicate territorial fabric that develops unintentionally.

THE STORY OF THE 3 ROADS This above study tries to understand this very unique situation and hopes to provide an understanding into the urban fabric of this area. Mapping the mosaic continuing from the 9 square exercise this study tries to look in the intangible experience of a walk through the town and its relation with landscape, building types, buildings and people. Building on the hypothesis that the area around the nala and the railway track had a different type of crowd concentration as compared to the high lying well planned areas around the church. And further trying to observe the very unique development of the three main streets.

14 The landuse map around the site is predominantly mixed residential with a commercial edge on the MM Road.

The EWS units are the most dynamic and sensitive part of the project. The EWS units are designed in such a way that it incorporates opportunities of informal commercial activities and also expansion of the living space.

PHASE 1

COMMERCIAL COMPLEX

The commercial complex is the backbone for this area of Frazer town once the metro comes up. The present MM road and Netaji road junction is a pedestrian nightmare with clogging traffic and lack of organization. The approach is to make the pedestrian realm go subterranean. This allows the network to connect all the major roads in that area and allows safe pedestrian thoroughfare. Also with the introduction of the metro the pedestrian footfall at that junction will increase the only way to deal with this problem is to separate the pedestrian from the vehicular. This site more-over comes in 150m radius of the metro junction thus allowing it to have an FAR of 4.0. This makes the site a prime commercial hub well connected by all means of transport. The plaza itself being open allows opportunity of informal commercial activities while becoming an important landmark for the location.

MOORE ROAD

The development is proposed in a highly dense neighborhood of Frazer town. The development has to be carried out in phases so that the present residents and users can be acclimatized to the change. The arrival plaza for the metro becomes an important commercial and transport hub and it becomes the main entry into the site. The next comes the EWS and new Moore market. Followed by school and finally the front to mm road. The treatment of the public front of mm road might get replicated further making the stretch and more pedestrian friendly zone. Thus the change aims at activating through in-between spaces.

Brigade Orchards Masterplan Overview The above diagrams briefly outline the design intentions of Brigade Orchards, a prestigious modern township program by brigade in Bangalore. The development aims at creating a fully self sustainable township which exits in harmony with nature. The township develops in an exciting orchard while growing around the existing vegetation. The beauty of this project comes from its ingenious attempts to preserve what was and at the same time make what will be.

The design challenge was centered around this philosophy and was aimed at designing a Academy for Sports for children who can be trained for excellence in sports and balance in academics. The design attempts to be a balance of its surroundings and sits like its a part of the bigger community with a variety of public edges and position of various functions.

LOCATION: Bangalore AREA: Domlur, Bangalore South

SITE

The purpose of the building is to showcase various genres of music and to host a variety of concerts. At the same time the building will act as a teaching hub for professionals. This makes to zoning absolutely vital which allows the public and the private parts to coexist without functional conflicts. The project aims at looking at a functional zoning of the built with a structural envelope which allows freedom of internal spaces.

The site is in a dense urban neighborhood with a ‘drain’ on one side and housing on the other. The challenge was to create open to sky spaces while isolating the stench from the drain. The built-form started behave like a wall, providing a buffer between the nala and the housing. The West side of the built facade contained a flat openable facade while the East was a more open facade. The North facade were alloted the living quarters with a glare free view.

26

PROGRAMMATIC MASSING

The Master massing reveals a linear hierarchy of spaces with the entrance side of the site having the more public functions like the gallery while the rear having the private functions like the residential. The common spaces like class rooms and library acts as a buffer between the two.

Further the built is massed internally allowing the Private to access all levels and the public having a transition and a story. The exterior structure of Portal Frames ensure that the interior spaces remain column free.

Connection of all the buildings by elevating the movement Realm

Climatic effect of Covered Court

Separation of Work and Relax

Link road is beautified and the north and the south campus are connected by elevated paths

The central core is the most public space having relaxing environment and activities. The relaxing centers were surrounded by workplaces separated by the movement matrix.

The concept evolved from a basic requirement of highly functional spaces. This suggested its rigidity. But at the same time the building needed a lot of 'see-through' spaces to make it look sculptural and interesting. The division of space is totally based on the way the visitors permeate through the structure. While the Ground Floor is used by one and all the Upper Floors become more private.
