A MODERN* APOCALYPSE

INTRODUCTION The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse is the final book in the new testiment which tells of the Last Judgment and the end of the world as we know it. This Zine picks out the modern equivilent in our society, not just the obvious selection but things people wouldn’t normally associate with the horsemen which I have chosen for each topic. Each subsection of this Zine gives a snippet, an insight into my views of the world, a small vision of what the modern downfall of the todays world could be. The vision of ‘A Modern Apocalypse’ was to bring a new approach to this book of the bible without any relious overtones, just to hold a mirror up to our society, local and abroad.

Book of Revelation of Jesus Christ to St John the Evangelist 6: 1-8

1 I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest. 3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” 4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword. 5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,[b] and six pounds[c] of barley for a day’s wages,[d] and do not damage the oil and the wine!”

7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” 11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[e] were killed just as they had been.

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us[f] from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their[g] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”

PESTILENCE pes·ti·lence (pst-lns) n. 1. A usually fatal epidemic disease, especially bubonic plague. 2. A pernicious, evil influence or agent. pestilence [pstlns] n 1. (Medicine / Pathology) a. any epidemic outbreak of a deadly and highly infectious disease, such as the plague b. such a disease 2. an evil influence or idea Rather than pick up on the rather dull and dour subject and disease, I decided to pick apart the ‘evil influence’ description of the word. It gave better scope for more creative interpretations of the word and have more abstract imagery. With this in mind I decided to approach this horsemen with the mass media in mind. The news media is there to inform and bring the world to those with heavy feet. Rather than adhere to these ideals tabloid media stray and start to fabriate their own truth and choose to endorse the celebrity culture that we now see in the red tops.

We Are Sorry

The News of the World was in the business of holding others to account. It failed when it came to itself. We are sorry for the serious wrongdoing that occurred. We are deeply sorry for the hurt suffered by the individuals affected. We regret not acting faster to sort things out. Our business is founded on the idea that a free and open press should be a postive force in society. We need to live up to this. In the coming days, as we take further concrete steps to resolve these issues and make amends for the damage they have caused, you will hear more for us. Yours Sincerly Rupert Murdoch

Love versus hate, some in the public eye have there careers forged by the mass media, no dissernable talent, just famous for being dull but beautiful. However some have the limelight thrust upon them and have to learn within it, and it comes across when they are photographed. Paparazzi used to be well trained photographers, their aim was to tell a story within a single image. ‘Life’ magazine is a perfect example of pioneering photgraphy accompanied by stories of substance the world over. Unfortunately it was squeezed out of popular demand by the celebrity culture and therefore tabloid culture.

War is something that has been with us since the dawn of humanity, the principals never change, one sides ideals against another sides differing ideals. Modern warefare goes through every level in society, the part that I have picked up on is an active warzone everyday, on the street. Gang warfare is a problem throughout the world, there is a lot of emphasis on terratory and ownership of land. The main priority of gang members is power, whether it comes through drug overlording, or from prostitution to slavery anything that can be sold and profit the leaders of the gang.

I see no changes. Wake up in the morning and I ask myself, “Is life worth living? Should I blast myself?” I’m tired of bein’ poor and even worse I’m black. My stomach hurts, so I’m lookin’ for a purse to snatch. Cops give a damn about a negro? Pull the trigger, kill a n*gga, he’s a hero.

Famine is something which is also wide spread, whether its from where its most prominent in the poorest parts of Africa, or the 1/3 of Americans that liver below the poverty line. I have tried to use a genral scope of this horse, incluiding something which can be seen closer to home, such as anorexia. I define famine as something which inhibits a sector of humanity from getting their rightful nutrition, whether its a psycological inhibitor or a narrow minded government that is keeping its public from there rightful needs.

Metallica “4 Horsemen” By the last breath of the fourth winds blow Better raise your ears The sound of hooves knocks at your door Lock up your wife and children now It’s time to wield the blade For now you have got some company The Horsemen are drawing nearer On the leather steeds they ride They have come to take your life On through the dead of night With the four Horsemen ride Or choose your fate and die You have been dying since the day You were born You know it has all been planned The quartet of deliverance rides A sinner once a sinner twice No need for confession now The Horsemen are drawing nearer On the leather steeds they ride They have come to take your life On through the dead of night With the four Horsemen ride Or choose your fate and die

Time Has taken it’s toll on you The lines that crack your face Famine Your body it has torn through Withered in every place Pestilence For what you have had to endure And what you have put others through Death Deliverance for you for sure There is nothing you can do So gather round young warriors now And saddle up your steeds Killing scores with demon swords Now is the death of doers of wrong Swing the judgment hammer down Safely inside armor blood guts and sweat

The Horsemen are drawing nearer On the leather steeds they ride They have come to take your life On through the dead of night With the four Horsemen ride Or choose your fate and die
