The 39 Steps What can I say about ‘The 39 Steps’? I had been warned that this production is nothing like the original book and films and that was right – it is NOTHING like them! Rather, it is a spoof of the John Buchan novel and well-known film. This was the production by the Dhekelia Theatre Company a few weeks ago. From the start, this production promised to be funny - and it was. The main character of the play, Richard Hannay - was played admirably by Steven Guy and he was a Thirties reluctant hero personified. Soon, other characters appear on set and the interaction between them is slick and acted out in a thoroughly entertaining way, the reaction from the audience was excellent. This was a really funny play! Jo Orr, who played three female leads, was very entertaining and pulled off all these roles superbly. Jo Smith, who is the longest-standing member of the Club, was amazing in all the many roles she took on for this play! It took a lot of work, but Jo made it look seamless! Then, we have the duet of ‘Mr.Memory’ and The Compere. Enid Bilton played the part of The Compere and she was faultless, as usual. Enid has taken on many roles in the Dhekelia Theatre Club over the years and has always entertained everybody so well. Les Jamieson was fully convincing playing the part of the dubious Mr. Memory and some of the lengthy lines he had were so impressive – he WAS Mr. Memory in that aspect alone! Mick Allgood is a brilliant actor and played several parts – he also had swift costume and character changes during the play and played to the audience so well. Rose Henry took two parts too and played both very well. Richard Myles, Stuart Dyke, Corinna Sutton and Mick Leverett completed the cast and they all played their parts to perfection. Paul Illingworth (who I interviewed for ‘Daxi’ last month) produced and directed this play – his last for the Dhekelia Theatre Club, and he has gone out with a flourish indeed! Of course, the others ‘behind the scenes’ are to be commended for their hard work to bring such a production to fruition. Props, Sound and Lights, Wardrobe, Programme/Publicity, Box Office and of course...the Bar! All these people work tirelessly for our entertainment and we appreciate their efforts. In all, this play was excellent and I am sure all of us who were lucky enough to see it will remember it for a long time. Looking forward to the next production, well done! SSAFA News On the 1st of April, a Charity Cycle Ride was held to raise funds for SSAFA. This turned out to be a well-attended day and the overall total raised was €2,000 euros through sponsorship and raffles. Music on the day was supplied by Reel Music Trio who entertained everybody with a variety of their songs and tunes and the delicious food was supplied by The Chippy. A splendid day was had by all, thanks to the organisation of Peter Whitting. Written by Helen Barrett, Larnaca Community Writer

Totally Tina and Robbie Reloaded! Yes, they were at Zante Bar, Polemidia, Limassol on 5th April. Time flies! Two days since the Totally Tina & Rob B Williams show is over and I still find myself humming ‘Proud Mary’ to myself while doing my chores. Probably you do too, after all it was an event long-awaited for by everyone here in Cyprus and much needed. The double entertainment event featured Justine Riddoch aka Totally Tina and Nick Garvi aka Robbie Reloaded. Apart from the good entertainment, this was intended to support a noble cause, namely L.C. Positive Voice (LCPV), a registered charity based in Larnaca but working Island wide. It was organised to put a smile not only on our faces but on the faces of those in need and suffering from an unforgiving illness – HIV/AIDS. Joining forces with LC Positive Voice, the charity that gives voice to people concerned about and/or living with HIV/AIDS, and their families and friends in Cyprus, these two artists have enchanted the guests with their remarkable talent and above all, they have shown us all that when people strongly believe in something and they start working together, they can make amazing things happen. Totally Tina and Rob B Williams Tribute proved it! Attendees of all ages amounted to approximately 220 people who flooded Zante’s gates at 7pm on Wednesday eager to hear Tina and Robbie sing. VIP guests included public figures in Cyprus (i.e. Mayors, MPs, and Heads of Charity). If you’re looking forward to a next big Totally Tina show, get ready for a wild 13th September night at a venue near you! We would like to thank all our sponsors who made this show possible. Stay tuned to find out more!

Troop Aid Grand Charity Ball On Saturday 8th April, a Grand Charity Ball was held at The Grecian Park Hotel to raise funds for Troop Aid which is a small charity with a worldwide reach. For info see www.troopaidinfo. Fabulous live music was provided by Mick Allgood on sax and Peter Day on piano at the cocktail reception, getting the night off to a brilliant start. Loraine Hall was on hand to photograph all the glamorous people attending. The hotel provided a wonderful dinner. Tina Chester sang her heart out, Ged Simmonds was a brilliant host and Greg Horton had the dance floor packed as he completed the live entertainment. The raffle was drawn on the night with a first prize of two return flights to the U.K. donated by Cobalt Air. The winner of the first prize was Rachel from Dhekelia and a further 14 prizes are now with the winners. A minion cake raised €120 and was taken to Nicosia Children's Hospital on Sunday by the successful and generous bidder. A grand total of €5,700 was raised and presented to Troop Aid. All in all, a brilliant night to remember. Written by Christine Briggs
Mr Tony Willis’ Sponsored Bicycle Ride The Eastern Cyprus Ladies were delighted to accept €860 from Mr Tony Willis on 13th April 2017. Eighty-year-old Tony lives in Frenaros and is the husband of E.C.L. member Carol Willis. He raised the money by completing a 15k sponsored bicycle ride. The money will be added to E.C.L’s Charity fund that helps P.A.S.Y.K.A.F and The BOC Oncology Centre Nicosia. E.C.L. have recently agreed to purchase much needed equipment for the P.A.S.Y.K.A.F nurses and are involved with The BOC Oncology Centre refurbishment of various waiting areas. Tony's money will be added to these projects. The photo shows Mr Tony Willis presenting his €860 sponsorship money to Mrs Marion Mitchell & E.C.L members.
Driftwood Café Bar Pernera warmly welcomes a new café bar - Driftwood. During April, the latest addition to the area celebrated its grand opening. Many people came along to join in with the celebrations and enjoyed drinks, food and live entertainment whilst basking in the sun. A great time was had by all.

Summer Loving! At last, after months of waiting the summer has finally arrived in all of its glory. Everything is re-opening and that's such a welcome sight to see. The boats have arrived back at the harbour, the indoor fire has been stored away and we now look to a wardrobe choice of shorts and t-shirts, instead of jeans and jumpers! To accompany the season of sunshine many people will be returning to work and preparing for the influx of visitors – I’m unsure which is the most stressful and tiring between the two! The demands of working 6 or 7 days a week in a stressful, demanding job and also in extreme heat must be a challenge both physically and mentally. Please try and take time when you can to apply a little TLC to yourself - the car wont run if it runs out of fuel! We all look forward to the fun in the sun with our family and friends who take the time and expense to come and visit us. The process of preparation can stretch either side of their arrival and departure, starting with the deep clean, planning the excursions and evenings out, stocking up on supplies and then worrying that all we have put in place will be fine. As we all love this island so much we feel the need to present it in all its glory and project how wonderful life is here. Ultimately we have chosen a life miles away from our family foundations, so it seems important our loved ones grasp why and as the saying goes ‘seeing is believing’. There is so much to do, see and experience with our guests, all within such a short space of time. As much as we want to fill up everyday with wonderful moments and making memories, it can become tiring and sometimes you just have to take your foot off the gas and go down a gear. I am sure that just spending quality time together and your guests seeing you happy and settled is the main experience that they seek. Maybe within your plans have a few days of just chilling out together? Sometimes its nice to just do nothing but be together. Have a great Summer 2017 everyone!!

Helping Spring to Hang Around! We have worked on quite a few spring projects over the last few months, as well as learning about all of the seasons, when they are and what changes they make to the world around us. I chose to share this craft, as it is not only a great way to celebrate spring but also makes a fab party decoration! What you will need: This is what you will need to make 4 flowers, 2 red and 2 blue. Obviously you can change the colour of the flowers to whatever you choose. 1 Sheet of red A4 paper 1 Sheet of blue A4 paper 4 Sheets of Green A4 Paper Some Yellow paper, card, or pompoms Scissors Glue
How to: Step 1 – Start with your green paper. Draw around a plate or a similar round object to make a circle on each piece of paper and cut it out. Keep the excess paper to use in a bit. Step 2 – Take your circles and starting from the outside edge cut inwards in a spiral pattern. If you are doing this with younger children you will notice that I drew the spiral on the paper first so that they could cut along the line. This will be your stem, or vine, that your flower will hang from. Step 3 – Take the left over paper from your green circles and cut out leaf shapes from it, we had around 8 per flower. You can see from the pictures that I cut the paper into squares, folded them and drew half a leaf on one side to make it easier for the children to cut out.
Step 7 – Take your 3 previously folded pieces and stuck strips - then stick them one on top of the other to make your flower shape by placing a spot of glue in the centre of each one. Then add a circle of yellow paper or a yellow pompom in the centre to finish your flower. Step 8 – Stick your finished flower onto the outside point of your green spiral and hang. I love the effect that these hanging flowers create. We have hung ours above our patio door but they would look great hung from the ceiling for a party. Please note the smaller your green circles or the wider your spiral then the shorter your vine will be. Ours were pretty long as you can see from the pictures!
Step 4 – Put a spot of glue on one point of your leaves and glue them randomly onto sections of your green spiral. Written by Sam Barnes.
Step 5 – Cut your red and blue paper into even strips length wise, our strips were approximately 2cm wide, then fold each strip in half creating a crease. Step 6 – Unfold your strips and place a spot of glue onto the fold line. Take the ends of your strip and gently fold them into the middle creating a shape somewhat similar to the number 8. You will need 3 of these to make one flower 22

Avoiding Sunburn and Heat Exhaustion Whilst on Holiday In the heat of the day, be wise and do what the locals do, relax and take it easy! Don't go on that hike around the city's tourist attractions, save that for early evening when it cools down a bit. Try and wear a hat and remember to drink plenty of water. If you don't keep yourself hydrated then you can become light headed, nauseated and your body will struggle to regulate its temperature causing sweats, fainting and sometimes convulsions. Both heatstroke and heat exhaustion can be dangerous. So at the first signs of fatigue, headache or dizziness (due to fluid loss) seek medical advice. Remember - always respect the sun and always have water, not ice-cold, to hand. Suncare - Enjoy the sun safely. You've endured hundreds of grey days waiting for the chance to go on holiday, stretch out in the sun and get that all-important tan. So here are some ideas on what happens exactly to your poor pale body when the sun hits it! So, what happens in sunshine? It’s a fabulous source of vitamin D, it makes you feel happy, relaxed and that the world just can't get any better - but too much of a good thing really can be dangerous where the power of the sun is concerned! The sun gives off powerful ultraviolet (UV) radiation waves. Sounds serious - it can be. The rays that tan (and can burn and cause skin cancer) are known as UVB and UVA. What happens when you tan? Why take it gently? Sunshine makes skin develop melanin, a natural substance which provides a small amount of protection. It is melanin that causes the skin to change colour, which results in a tan. Everyone has differing levels of melanin, naturally dark skinned people have more, whilst pale people with freckles tend to have less. The important thing is, that whatever level you are, melanin still takes time to 'kick in'. You will only start to see the result from your day of sunbathing 24-36 hours later! This is why you just can't get a tan in a couple of days no matter how long you stay out! So take it easy, especially in the first few days when your skin is still taking time to develop the melanin. Know your skin type and accommodate it. Sunburn is painful and whilst we all know it can lead to cancer, so can sunbathing too much year after year. Not sunburn! First the bad news - permanent and irreversible skin damage can be caused by ALL levels of sunburn, not just the serious. Now the science - UVB rays hit the surface of the skin and start a reaction within 15 minutes, this then continues developing for up to 72 hours following exposure. Whilst UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and cause lasting damage - yes girls, these are the rays that give you wrinkles! They also, scarily, can lay the groundwork for future cases of skin cancer. 24
How can you make it safer? You already know the common sense measures you can take, hopefully now you understand a little more about the science of it all and you will be prompted to follow all the advice you've learned. • RESPECT THE SUN • Keep babies under 9 months out of direct sunlight. Even in the shade ensure they have sun screen applied. • Make sure children always Slip, Slap, Slop. SLIP on a long sleeved top, SLAP on a hat, and SLOP on a high factor sunscreen, oh and sunglasses wouldn't go amiss either! • Don't use a sunscreen with less than a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Re-apply it regularly and always after swimming. • There is a voluntary star system for UVA protection in sunscreens - more stars mean more protection. • Remember to apply more cream to areas where the skin is thinner, e.g. tops of ears and feet, lips, nose, boobs, and shoulders. • The sun's effects can be magnified on water so use a water-resistant cream and re-apply after taking a dip. For those active all day, specialist sun screens are available that are more durable. • Check the expiry date on any sun screen left over from last year’s holiday, as the effectiveness lessens over time. If you have sensitive skin and need a particular type of lotion always get it before you depart, just in case you can't get it in the resort. • Sun rays can get through thin fabrics and bounce off sand or water, so always make sure you apply sunscreen, even if you're sitting in the shade. This is especially true for children. • Buy a good quality pair of sunglasses that block the UV rays. Not only are they good for the image, they can also help protect from sun glare. • Get into the habit of checking your position when sunbathing and NEVER sleep in the sun, no matter how relaxed it makes you feel. Remember to take your time, build up slowly, use the correct sunscreen and you'll have a long lasting tan to enjoy long after you get back home. Warming-up and Cooling-down It is very important to warm up the body before doing any exercise. This will help you prepare physiologically and psychologically, reducing the chance of injury. A warm-up and cool-down may add a few minutes to your exercise routine, but it is worth it! Warming-up prepares the body by increasing the blood flow to muscles, increasing the flow of oxygen to the muscle cells, increasing the body's temperature, which also increases the speed and force of muscular contraction because nerve impulses travel faster at higher body temperatures. The heart rate will increase to ensure the demand made on the circulatory and metabolic systems are met and improve neural function and co-ordination, increasing the supply of lubricating synovial fluid (the body’s natural WD40) and to thicken the articular cartilages – the body’s shock absorbers. Warm-up routine: 1. Five minutes of low intensity activity such as walking. Pump your arms or make large but controlled circular movements to help warm the muscles of your upper body. 2. Perform the upcoming exercise at a slow pace. This may then be followed by some sport-specific movements and activities. 3. Stretching is best performed after your general warm-up and should not be forced beyond their normal range. Another component of stretching during a warm-up is ‘static stretching’ - where a muscle is gently stretched and held in the stretched position for 10-30 seconds. Apart from static stretching, other methods of stretching include ballistic, dynamic and PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation), each of which is best done under instruction from a qualified person because if done incorrectly, it is more likely to lead to injury. The cool-down period is just as important, the aim is to decrease the intensity of the aerobic session and to return the body to a state of rest. Cool-down routine: 1. Continuing your chosen exercise while gradually lowering its intensity over several minutes. 2. Slow jogging, brisk walking or gentle cycling. 3. Stretching to relax your muscles and restore them to their resting length and improve their flexibility. The cool-down has the effect of: 1. Preventing blood pooling. 2. Lowering the heart rate and breathing rate gradually. 3. Preventing fainting and dizziness by ensuring that the brain continues to receive a sufficient supply of blood and oxygen. 4. Reduces the blood lactic acid levels. 5. Helps prepare your muscles for the next exercise session. You may see conflicting advice as to whether cooling down prevents post-exercise muscle soreness, also known as delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), which tends to occur after doing unfamiliar exercise or working at a harder level than usual. However, even if cooling down doesn’t prevent DOMS, the other benefits of cooling down mean that you should always make it a part of your exercise session. How to choose a MicroSD Nowadays all the electronic devices that we use daily, have an adequate memory capacity but nevertheless we still feel the need to expand it. SD and MicroSD cards are now a standard for this purpose. Which are the criteria for choosing the card for the job? 1. Storage capacity. It ranges from 4, 6, 16 and 32 to 64, 128, 200 and 256 and more GB (Gigabyte). 2. Reading and data writing speed. Choosing the first criteria is rather easy because everyone knows how much storage capacity is needed. On the other hand, it is more difficult to understand which is the reading and writing speed of these cards. Two main features make a MicroSD performing: the minimum writing and reading speed, below which it cannot run, and the maximum reading and writing speed, that can make a huge difference between a card and another. Speed class The minimum writing speed is indicated with a symbol that describes the speed class, namely the speed below which the card won’t ever go. Those cards labeled UHS-I and UHS-II (Ultra High Speed I and II) have a higher Bus Speed (data transfer internal speed) and are suitable for taking high definition videos (Full-HD or 4K) and to take continuous shots. The maximum reading and writing speed (for pictures, videos, mp3, files), which is not always indicated (especially in the cheaper models), is the second main criteria you should take into consideration. This figure is listed among the MicroSD’s features, but it is not referred to with any particular symbol. Types MicroSDs are also labeled with another symbol, less important, that indicates the following storage capacities: SD: up to 2 GB – SDHC: from 4 to 32 GB – SDXC: from 64 GB up to 2 TB Which class to choose? - For an mp3 reader, which does not require a high speed considering the small size of .mp3 files (about 5 MB each), a MicroSD HC Class 10 is more than enough. - For a compact digital camera, or a mid-market smartphone which runs apps and games and has an 8 or more-megapixel camera, I suggest a MicroSD not lower than Class 10. - For a professional camera or a video camera that shoots 4K videos with 30 Fps (frames per second), such as for example GoPro Hero 5, I suggest UHS-I U1 or U3 Class. LOCAL SPORTS - Scuba Diving Cyprus lends itself perfectly to this popular pastime. With clean, crystal clear waters surrounding the island and the generally mild climate the popularity of diving increases every year. The coastline is dotted with interesting dive sites and wrecks which provide an ideal diving opportunity. One of the most attractive sites and one of the ten best in the world is the roll-on/roll-off ferry Zenobia which sunk in 42 metres of water on its maiden voyage in 1980 around 2 kms off the Larnaca coast. The wreck still contains its cargo of 104 articulated trucks and their contents. There are many good companies along the eastern Cyprus coast offering diving experiences and lessons. If you are interested in SCUBA diving we suggest you choose an outlet with a recognised diving qualification such as PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors). PADI and other similar associations check and approve their representative companies and also issue certificates for customers’ successfully completed diving courses. This information was provided by a local Diving Centre, a PADI 5 star dive centre in Protaras/Pernera.

Your open mind opens even wider on the 9th, so you can have some amazing experiences that other people can only dream of. You aren't about setting limits or putting labels on things. The 19th is a wonderfully productive day & it's surprising to find that something you thought was doomed is working out. Pleasant & unplanned progression is just a side effect of the fabulous work you're doing. Pursue a romantic spark that ignites on the 27th!
You're the go-to person on the 15th but you don't do well when you're kept in the dark. Ask upfront about the details so that you can do whatever job you're assigned to the best of your ability. You're a hero for all those who have given up on romance on the 25th & everyone can learn from your loving ways. Even if you don't have anyone special in your life, you exude hope when it comes to all things love related.
Watch your reaction on the 2nd. You don't have to hold anything back but you also don't want to scare people with your loud intensity. You've got the urge to get in shape (or better shape) on the 11th. You look forward to heading toward undiscovered territory on the 15th & you aren't going to let a few warning signs turn you back. At least take a friend along for safety's sake, because there's safety in numbers!
You get more done in a group than on your own on the 8th & though you campaign for a leadership position, you might have to work in the trenches for a while before making your way to the top. Hanging out with the ‘little people’ has its advantages. Your high standards are visible on the 16th. You have a lot of enthusiasm for causes that are near & dear to your heart on the 24th & these are excellent days to get your way.
You're feeling headstrong & confident on your own on the 10th & 11th, so getting second opinions is the last thing on your mind. You know those outstanding projects & assignments? Well this is a good time to apply the finishing touches & turn them in. You're attracted to the strange & unfamiliar on the 19th & some of your best ideas come from really ‘out-there’ places. If it's been done before, you aren't interested in doing it again.
The spotlight is on you even if you don't want it to be on the 1st & 2nd, so why not use it for something good? Get up on stage & tell the world your deepest wishes. Some of them just might come true! You like to stick close to home on the 9th & you are at your happiest in your jammies cuddled up on the couch with loved ones. Try one of those nifty new food delivery services so you don't have to leave the house if you don't want to.
You love to run with the rich & famous crowd, & on May 4th you feel like you've made it. Whether you really belong there, you feel like you do & that's half the battle. Fake it 'til you make it, baby! There are many things going on behind the scenes on the 11th & very little stands in your way once you set your mind on a goal. Get ready to cross some major things off your bucket list.
Your triumphs, both big & small, deserve to be celebrated on May 6th. If no one else notices your accomplishments, be sure to make a note of them for yourself. Even if the world isn't keeping score, you are! If you're in charge of any money on the 22nd, be sure to make slow, calculated decisions. The more you try to hurry, the more mistakes you make, which could end up being really costly.
You might be concerned with minor character flaws on the 1st but to others you seem flawless. Take advantage of this brief time to get your ideas heard. Your energy is elevated on the 9th, making your personal possibilities too numerous to count. What do you want to do with your life? What's the most difficult thing you're trying to achieve? Ask yourself the toughest questions you can think of because right now the answers come easily.
You'll have to be brave to make it through the many storms that come your way on the 4th. You can't control the things happening around you, but you can control how you react to them. You're very direct and straightforward when dealing with people on the 24th which earns you the reputation of being honest & reliable. Your success is limitless now that the important people know they can count on you!
Your analytical & practical skills are on point on the 5th so these are the best days to get down to the basics of a frustrating situation. Once you break a problem down into incremental pieces, you can divide & conquer it! Things are much less intimidating when they don't look quite so large. You get encouragement from unexpected sources but you aren't complaining because you'll take all the positive feedback.
The rewards are many when you see a project through to fruition on the 3rd. It's tempting to give up, but committing to a goal & reaching it is very satisfying, even if you're the only one who knows about it. You're all smiles when congratulations come your way on the 30th. Whether the kudos you're getting are well deserved or not, you know you've got what it takes to make it to the top.

The Story of Jaguar The Company first started off in a shed back in 1920, then went on to build some of the best cars in the world. The Company's roots lay in motorcycle sidecars. These were the products of William Walmsley who built his first sidecar at his family home in Stockport, Cheshire. By 1921, his family had moved to Blackpool in Lancashire where William continued to build sidecars behind their new home. His activities attracted the attention of 20 year old neighbour, William Lyons. Together, they went into partnership building sidecars and backed by their fathers, they chose the name ‘Swallow’ for their business. The business expanded rapidly when the Swallow Sidecar Company was set up in 1922. It wasn’t long until the company was occupying three separate workshops in Blackpool and was big enough to exhibit at the Motor Cycle show at London's Olympia in 1923. This led to the establishment of a chain of Swallow dealers. Walmsley and Lyons shared equal authority in the direction of the Company although Lyons usually appeared in public as spokesman, mainly because of Walmsley's retiring nature. Between them they showed exceptional ability at keeping costs down, not by skimping but by adopting efficient methods of using labour and materials. The rapidly expanding company was considering moving into car bodies and with that in mind, the company was renamed the Swallow Sidecar and Coachbuilding company in 1926. The First Swallow Car Bodies New larger premises were acquired in Blackpool to bring the whole operation under one roof, employing more skilled workers from the Midlands, which was the centre of Britain's motor industry. In January 1927, Lyons persuaded Stanley Parker, who was a dealer in Bolton, Lancashire to supply him with a new Austin Seven chassis. The first Swallow-bodied Austin was built largely as a result of the efforts of Cyril Holland, a coachbuilder who had been hired from the Midlands. Sidecar production built up to around 100 a week and continued until 1929 as car bodies began to occupy more of the partner's time. The Swallow's coachwork was built using aluminium panels and painted in bright colours such as crimson and cream. To reduce the overheads of transporting chassis up to Blackpool, Lyons bought an old ammunition factory at Foleshell in Coventry and in 1928 he moved everything, including many of the work force, as well as recruiting locally at the new location. Car bodies continued to be produced alongside sidecars, with a brief run of Fiat, Swallows in 1929 before special coachwork was mounted on Swift and then Standard chassis in 1930. Swallow was now offering all types of body styles, particularly sporting two-seaters, the luxurious drop head coupes and saloons. Wolseley chassis also received Swallow bodies in 1931 before Lyons and Walmsley became car manufactures in their own right with the SS1 of 1931. The chassis was made by Standard for Swallow only. The initials SS is assumed to stand for Standard Special. The SS1 had a six cylinder engine of 2054 cc or 2552 cc. At the same time a smaller four cylinder coupe was introduced with a 1006 cc engine, called the SS2. The Founding of SS Cars Ltd. Demand for the new SS cars was so great that the production of Swallow-bodied cars was run down in 1932 and ceased in 1933. Lyons formed a new company SS cars Ltd. There was some criticism that the cars didn't perform as well as they looked and Lyons set out to increase the power output. Walmsley was not happy with the way things were going and resigned at the first annual general meeting and went on to pursue a low-key career in caravans and garage management. To be continued...

Looking Back.... I have recently published my 1000th blog post online! Back in 2009 when I wrote my very first blog post, I was sitting in my parents’ conservatory in England with my 4 month old baby asleep beside me. It was a spur of the moment decision because I knew nothing about blogs, had never read any or thought about writing one. I can't even remember what made me think of it but I stumbled across the idea whilst messing about online and thought 'Yeah, I'm going to start a blog!'. There was never a plan or ultimate aim for the blog (there still isn't to be honest!) but I'm sure I didn't imagine that I would still be doing it over 7 years later, or any of the things that have progressed from it. Looking back over my old posts, I can see how they have evolved over time. The earlier ones are very short - I think I was worried about waffling on too much and it becoming boring (totally missing the point that it was MY blog and I could do what I wanted!). I wish I'd gone into more detail on some of them now, maybe one day I'll get round to elaborating on some old stories. I've often thought about going back and deleting some of the early posts or some of the old ‘out of date’ ones, but I thought it would be hard to work out where to actually stop, after all - they all add up to what makes the blog what it is today, so they are all staying! There were very few images too in the early days, I hadn't realised how much photos can add interest to a post and I wouldn't dream of posting one without at least one picture these days, but this was before it became second nature for me to share the post on Facebook or Pinterest. Speaking of Facebook, I had a notification the other day saying it was their 10th anniversary. I can hardly remember a time before it! What on earth did I do with my time? I love a bit of nostalgia so I really enjoy the Facebook memories that pop up each morning. It is very clear that the way I use it has changed a lot over the years. Of course it follows me back to when I was married but 'free' - going out to the pub several times a week, working in a job I didn't particularly enjoy and generally posting whatever random stuff popped into my head. Back in those days there were less people using Facebook. I remember people talking about it with more and more people joining up all the time and the joy of finding some old school friend you'd lost contact with and 'poking' people or throwing virtual sheep at them. No-one gave too much thought to what they would post, (actually most people probably still don't!) and I posted many random and annoying, vague status updates, always being irritated that they had to start with 'Emma is....' It's changed a lot over the years and so have I as a user of Facebook. I'm still on it just as much - if not more than ever but it's now also our main source of advertising, plus I'm just very nosy as to what's going on with everyone! I think twice before I post these days, aware that not all my Facebook friends are actually real friends. I really can't imagine having never started blogging, or a life without social media. That may sound strange but without both I'm not sure what I'd be doing now. I'm very thankful that I decided to start this all those years ago and it has taken me where I am today.

Pinterest FOMO – is it just me? For anyone one of a certain age, or who doesn’t have kids, FOMO means ‘Fear Of Missing Out’. And Pinterest is now the 2nd or 3rd biggest social network, depending on which statistics you read, and actually showing the fastest rate of growth. People love Pinterest because, apart from being an absorbing leisure activity, it helps them find pictures of what they like and are looking for. This could be anything from fashion, food, interiors, DIY, weddings, architecture - you name it, and there will be some lovely images for you to save to your own personal scrapbook. But to quote a friend on Facebook: ‘B…dy Pinterest....b…dy addictive!!! busy busy busy, stop it Helen and get on with work, housework, present buying, food shopping and ponies to sort!!!’ Like Helen, I admit it – I am hooked on Pinterest, and FOMO has reared its head. For me it’s all about interiors (mostly tiles, no surprises there) but for someone like me who has boxes of pages I’ve ripped out from magazines over the years, Pinterest really is intoxicating. It’s also possibly becoming somewhat toxic. If I don’t go through all the 1,651 images on a really interesting looking page, which ones will I miss? What amazing, utterly gorgeous image was waiting at no. 1,649? And if I don’t check out all the suggested boards, will Pinterest lose interest and stop sending me stuff? Aaaargh! Pinterest is replacing my scrapbook boxes. All those pages I – or possibly you? - have been saving from magazines, to rummage through, sort out, savour and occasionally discard, have been added to and are now a truly unique collection of ideas for when ‘The Project’ finally comes to pass (hopefully this side of 2020 and before I/you reach the 1,500 limit on the Wonderful Ideas board.) The only problem is, like a lot of things on the internet, you end up with too much choice, FOMO, and forgetting to get the dinner ready. However, I’m getting better at disciplining myself. For anyone who hasn’t had a look at Pinterest yet, don’t worry – it’s actually a very enjoyable pastime! If we’re talking interiors, and you need some help in sorting out your ideas for your own house, or a letting property, just give me a ring or even check out my Pinterest pages on Cyprus Living Spaces or Persian Glazes. Hope you like what you see!

Watering When Away
Compost Corner
A question I am often asked is “How do you keep the house plants alive when you are away on vacation?”.
A long time ago before we had felt pens and crayons, we used natural things to paint with and dye clothes. Cave paintings have been found on the walls of caves that were drawn during the Stone Age. All the colours and pigments used in the caves were mostly from plants, flowers and even ground down rocks. The rocks were ground down to a fine powder to get a black colour. They even used things like blood, urine and animal fat to help the colour stick to the walls, they even used the colours on their skin, I suppose like the first tattoos. It’s very easy to create your own colours by choosing brightly coloured petals from flowers. Simply squash them until you extract the colour then add a small amount of water. Keep your colours separate to start with and then you can experiment by mixing colours together. If you use berries, you can make dark purples and reds but do not eat the berries and always wash your hands afterwards. If you need a very bright red the best thing I have found is a strawberry and for green it must be grass. Have fun!
The best way would be to ask someone you know to pop in once a week to check them. If this is not possible, here are a few cheap and easy ways to help. Make two or three holes in the lid of a two-litre bottle, fill the bottle with water and put the lid back on. Leave it upturned so that the water slowly drips into the soil, it might take one or two weeks before it is totally empty. Another way is to fill an empty wine bottle with water, find a piece of wool or string that will soak up the water well. Soak the string and put one end of it in the bottom of the bottle and the other end onto the soil. The string will act as a syphon and slowly add water to the soil. For Orchids, just simply water well before you go away and leave the plant on a drip tray with a few stones to keep the Orchid pot out of the water in the tray. The humidity from the water is enough to keep the plant alive for a couple of weeks. Cactus will be fine if you water them before you go and keep them in a shady place. In garden centres and greenhouses, they use something called Capillary Matting, which draws up water like a sponge and then slowly transfers it to your plants. By using an old towel, you can create the same effect, soak an old towel and leave half on your draining board and the other half in the sink filled with water. Your plants can sit on the towel on the draining board and soak up the water.

SALES - RENTALS - DEEDS - MORTGAGES - LEGALITY - ADVICE
What Is Your Property Worth? While visiting an English friend who was on holiday in Limassol last weekend, I had to rush away as a client had requested an urgent valuation on his home. She jokingly asked me - how do you carry out your valuations? Do you just make them up? The questions got me thinking about the science of providing a valuation and I realised that our readers may be wondering the same thing! When we are invited to provide a valuation or what should more accurately be called a market appraisal, there are several factors that are considered. After more than 6000 appraisals over the years, these whizz through your brain in a matter of minutes but each time we provide a figure all of the following are taken into account: • LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! • Size of the house/apartment and the size of the land or veranda that is offered with it • Access • Condition of the property • Sales of similar properties in the same area • Government valuations • Title Deed situation (issued, will be issued, or problematic) • Availability of similar properties on the market at that time (bungalows always do well!) • Market situation – prices rising, falling or static • Outstanding features • Condition of surrounding area • Empty neighbouring plots? Buildable? • Potential for extension or renovation • Likely client base for that property • Furnished? If so, the quality and look of the home This is not an exhaustive list but it will give you an idea of the number of items a valuer must consider before putting their name to a figure. Most Estate Agents do not charge for a market appraisal. If a formal valuation is required, usually for banking purposes, then only a qualified surveyor can undertake the job and the charge for this usually starts around 250 Euro depending on the property under study. If you would like a free appraisal of your property, please do not hesitate to contact us to see the science in action!

Communal Property Advice While there are many benefits to owning a property in a communal building, development or resort, there are also additional concerns. Your owners and neighbours become part of your investment, almost as if they were indirect partners. They can negatively affect your investment as much as a bad business partner can affect a business. Therefore, it’s essential when purchasing property with communal facilities that you properly understand the unique aspects relating to communal property ownership. This issue: Answering Common Objections (3) Objection 3 - My friend said his communal fees are half what I pay, I must be paying too much! This is a true classic and fortunately is a very easy one to answer. Usually this friend (or friend of a friend) is not giving you the full picture, or the story has been retold with the amount changing with each retelling. So, it is best to explain how budgets and fees may vary. Your 1st Answer It is very difficult to compare two buildings. Comparing the communal expenses of an 8-unit building with a lift, to an 80-apartment resort with lift, gardens, pool etc. is an obvious example of this, but the differences can be subtler and still make a huge impact on communal expense. These differences include types of facilities (pool, lift, car parks, gyms etc.) and the number of apartments that share these facilities. For example, a swimming pool is usually the highest cost in the communal budget, so if there is a development with 1 pool and 20 apartments, each apartment’s share of the pool maintenance cost will be higher than the development next door with 1 pool and 40 apartments. Occupancy levels and type of occupancy (residential, holiday) also have an effect, as the more the building is actively used - the higher the maintenance costs, higher the annual repair bills and higher the electricity costs. Your 2nd Answer This is closely related to my article a few months ago about the importance of record keeping. The easiest way to diffuse this objection is to offer to go through the budget and income/expense accounts with the owner. Most owners completely underestimate the true cost of maintaining a building/resort and are unaware of many of the expenses. So, show the budget and ask the question, if you want to reduce your communal fee by 50% suggest how to reduce the expenses by 50% and still maintain the building. 52

RECIPES - FOOD - DRINKS - INGREDIENTS - TIPS
Easy Sweet & Sour Chicken This is a really quick and easy Sweet and Sour Chicken recipe and delicious as well. I made it for the staff at Blueberries when one of my girls said she fancied something Chinese. I just used what was available and it turned out really well! Don’t forget with recipes like this, you can always adjust the recipes to your liking, more sweet, more sour or more spicy. First make it as per my method and ingredients, then when you taste it - adjust to your liking! INGREDIENTS: 4 Chicken breast fillets cut into strips. 2 Red bell peppers cut into big-ish squares. 1 Medium onion cut in half, then take out the heart and cut same as Bell Peppers. 4 Tinned pineapple rings cut into chunks - save some of the juice. 5 Tbsp of tomato ketchup 3 Tbsp of clear honey 1 Tbsp of sweet chili sauce, (optional) 4 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar 2 Tbsp of orange juice 2 Tbsp of cooking oil Salt and Pepper to season METHOD: • Wash and pat dry your chicken, then cut into bite size strips. • Heat the oil in a frying pan, then fry your chicken until it just starts to colour (brown) • Add in your bell peppers, mix together and cook for one min. • Add in your onion mix and cook for another couple of mins. Season with salt and pepper, don’t worry if they are not cooked, with Chinese food its good for the veg to be a little ‘al dente’. • Add your ketchup, honey, sweet chili, apple vinegar & orange juice. You can also add your pineapple now and you can put a couple of splashes of the pineapple juice in as well. Mix each time you add any one of the ingredients. • When everything is mixed together and heated, you should have a nice syrupy consistency. Taste and adjust if required and add water to reach the required consistency. This is now ready to be served with your choice of rice or just good old chips. ENJOY!

LAW - FINANCES - YOUR RIGHTS - INVESTMENTS - ADVICE - GUIDANCE
Successful Investing What is successful investing all about? It’s all about values and that’s not the value of a currency. It starts and ends with the value system of the Company, the person who advises you, their integrity, and do they truly care? Good Financial Advisory Companies look for that first in their advisors, because that is what drives the Company’s ultimate success. Caring advisers can do a lot to ensure your investing success. Every fund for example in a client’s portfolio, has a ‘Liquidity Date’, this is the weekly or monthly date at which funds are valued. A caring adviser takes the time to watch these carefully and by doing so, ensures that every measure is taken for success and if an investment is going off song, the adjustment can be advised upon to the client. Too many in my experience, chase the new client at the expense of looking after the existing one. Maybe you have felt that before. It’s a fact, that when the company and its advisers’ value system is right, referrals flow in a-plenty. This genuine caring approach adds value to the Company, its employees and most importantly, the portfolios of their clients. A good IFA company fully researches the investment they have available to offer before the advisors see them. The right company holds a very high regard for due diligence in fund and investment selection, so you can have peace of mind that they have passed that acid test. Your truly caring adviser will take a lot of time to ensure that the funds they have recommended from that approved ‘pool’ truly reflect your needs and desires, more importantly, your attitude to risk. They will fully discuss with you the reasons why they are recommended, so that you understand how and why they will benefit you. They will tell you of the liquidity dates and that you can expect contact from them to assure you all is well, or when adjustment is required, plus it all comes in plain language that is easy to understand. The right funds to make your capital grow steadily will have a strong track record, be award winning, and be as diverse as possible - what we refer to as ‘spread’. This is a method of making risk go as low as possible and there is a lot of skill to doing it, including ‘tuning in’ to geo political issues that affect markets. A spread in equities (shares), markets, products and global spread, as one area of the world could be going down, as another is going up and that adjustment can be made if required. What constitutes ‘good advice’ - a client who has made a loss with a previous IFA company, he had capital in US Dollars and the dollar is very strong now, as the markets love Mr Trump. His dollar loss of $6,333 was turned into an £8590 gain, even before the investment was made and his Sterling investments have a strong track record. Personally, I love this type of work, as it is a wonderful way to help people. I refer to it as ‘W.O.M=P.O.M’ - ‘word of mouth equals peace of mind’. A well looked after client will naturally recommend and who they recommend receives ‘wompom’, as you yourself must be seeking that. Building the ‘bridge of trust’ is a vital part of a caring client/adviser relationship. Seek out an IFA company that holds high values. Ask what their value system is. Any good company and adviser will be very happy to answer and prove that to you, so you have that essential peace of mind.

Ask Gina Dear Gina, I wonder if you can help please. We have a cat (Tiggar) who is currently on Mainland Turkey, (Kusadasi). My Question is, what do we need to do in order to bring her to Cyprus as we are planning to move here on a more permanent basis. She is nearly 8 years old and has had all of her injections, (rabies due again next month), she has pet passport & has been micro chipped and had her blood tests done. Cheers, John & Helen. It sounds to me that you have nearly everything you need to bring Tiggar into Cyprus. The rabies vaccine has to be done at least 21 days before travelling. I suggest that you get that done before the expiry date. That is one thing that Cyprus airports are very strict about that. Do not forget to visit your vet between 48 -120 hours before your cat is due to fly. Your veterinary doctor must sign the page in the passport declaring that he has seen and examined your cat between those hours. Your vet must also give your cat worming, flea and tick treatment between these hours also. There are certain pages in the passport that your veterinary doctor must sign including the clinical examination page stating that your cat is in perfect health. The passport and micro-chip has already been done, so everything else is easy. Hope I get to meet you Helen, John and of course Tiggar when you get over here.
May Day, May Day! Everybody is in a panic about the tick situation this year. It seems as if ticks are dropping from the sky and landing on every single dog! I have received many e-mails from people since the beginning of February complaining that they have found ticks on their dogs, even though they are house pets. Well, ticks do crawl as well as jump and I am sure that all dogs go out for a walk so it's only natural that ticks are found on them. I saw a documentary about ticks the other day and it showed in slow motion how the ticks are hanging on the tips of long grass, sometimes for hours, waiting for an animal to pass by so that they can jump and land on them. I was amazed on how far they can actually jump! It seemed to me that they FLEW and landed on the poor unsuspecting animals!
Pet of the Month Fagin is one of six siblings. Brother of Oliver, Dodger, Nancy, Trixie and Heidi. They were born 10.12.2016. A surprise birth because mummy Destiny, was so thin when she was rescued nobody knew that she was pregnant. It was also a big surprise for Destiny! Fagin looks the biggest of the litter but he is not, it is his long, soft fur which makes him look big. He looks like a cuddly teddy bear, his fur is so soft, like cotton wool. Fagin is a clever guy, he walks on a leash already and is quite sensible for a puppy. He is very adventurous and interested in new things, very playful with all the other puppies and likes to say hello to all the cats. Fagin measures 32cm shoulder height at the moment and he just finished all his vaccinations. Who can resist this cute teddy bear? Fagin can be seen at Argos Animal Sanctuary in Ormideia. The shelter is open 7 days a week & visiting times are 11am to 3.30pm. There are more dogs and cats looking for homes on the Argos webpage: www.argossanctuary.com and also on Facebook: Argos Animal Sanctuary 60
So don't wait for summer to come before you start flea and tick treatment. Don't wait to find a tick and then treat your pet. Use treatment for fleas and ticks even in the winter. It's not cold enough in Cyprus for the ticks to disappear completely in the winter and this year it hasn't rained much to prevent them from coming out so early. There are plenty of brands to choose from and a variety of collars, ampules for back of neck and even tablets now.

Too Young As a very young man, too young some might have said, I started work as a Registrar in England. Not long afterwards I was asked to conduct the wedding ceremony of an elderly couple whose combined ages totaled 170 years. The groom was 86 and the bride 84 and they were next door neighbours. Apart from the companionship, I guess they were subscribing to the adage two can live as cheaply as one. People from that long departed generation would not generally cohabit, however platonically, without a marriage certificate safely in the biscuit tin. They wanted no fuss they told me, just a simple ceremony on a quiet weekday with just two witnesses. These were to be the gentleman’s daughter and the lady’s son. On the happy day after my brief preamble, only the basic lawful declarations were made by the couple. The groom placed the ring on the bride’s left hand and gave her a tender peck on the lips. While the register was being signed and the certificate prepared, I decided to play some orchestral background music to enhance the occasion. After placing a cassette in the player, I discovered to my horror the randomly chosen track that burst forth was ‘They tried to tell us we’re too young’. OK, so it was only the instrumental version, but didn’t everyone know the words only too well? Would they think I was taking the proverbial? No one seemed to notice. Should I turn it off? Would this draw attention to what they had subconsciously been listening to if I did? I quickly morphed into the persona of a game show host and to focus their thoughts elsewhere by asking them lots of questions. Where would they be going for lunch? Would they like me to take a picture of all four of them together with their camera? Meanwhile the band played on, and on and on and on. Anyhow hands were eventually shaken warmly and the marriage party finally left the building all smiles and none the wiser. The experienced Deputy Registrar looked at me in a somewhat disdainful manner I thought, and she said “Well I think you got away with that one!” That evening my cleaner might have been left wondering why she had found a certain Mantovani music cassette nestling in the depths of my waste paper basket. Living the Dream
The Power of Belief
Nine years ago, my dear husband and I decided to come to Cyprus to live the dream. We lived in London and suffered all the rising prices of council tax, car tax, house tax, car insurance, house insurance, rising water rates, electricity and the list goes on. So, it was ‘Cyprus here we come’!
The energy you emit from within will always be sent back to you by the Universe in the form of coincidences and synchronicities. Therefore, you must always be on the lookout for signs, messages, opportunities and possibilities. In other words, nothing is an accident - it's all an attraction due to the energy you are sending out. So, always walk around as the person you wish to be and allow your inner spark to shine from within. Do not walk around with complaints, fears and doubts. Remember that everything happens for a reason, so trust and be patient that even delays are the Universe's way of modifying existing circumstances to make the manifestation of your wishes possible. When the Universe finally sends signals and messages according to the energy you radiate, act as if you own and deserve it. Then by the Laws of the Universe, it must be! Life is magic - allow yourself to experience it.
Yes - we are living the dream! My husband bowls, buffs and dives, but hang on what about me? Well I've turned into my mother and have become a compulsive cleaner. You all know Cyprus is the land of dust and we have a lot of it. As I have no hobbies cleaning has become my hobby – I must be totally MAD! So, I think it's now time to find a hobby. Walking - I don't think so as my feet and legs are dodgy. Swimming - well, I like it but only if the temperature is over 30 degrees, however I must tell you all that I'm a qualified swimming and aqua aerobics teacher! Gardening - Alan Titmarsh I'm not! So, what about cooking - yeah right! Coffee mornings - well all those women, as much as I love them are not for me. I know shopping, I love shopping – but your budget when you’re a pensioner is not what it was, Marks & Spencer’s are a bit out of my league although their outlets are not bad. So now I will surprise you all - I have found something to do… I will tell you next time!
