An Oasis of Tranquillity! The St. Helena’s Flower Festival held on 28/30th April was amazing! For those who visited the Festival, I think I can speak on their behalf when I say that it was a very special occasion. The small Anglican Church of St Helena’s in the heart of Larnaca Town became transformed into a veritable garden - an oasis of tranquillity. The heady fragrance of the beautiful flowers and the cool calm inside the Church encouraged visitors to sit and absorb the peaceful atmosphere. The ladies of the congregation, led by Liz Taylor, produced the most beautiful floral arrangements for this Flower Festival. Liz herself arranged the displays which depicted some of the Parables of Jesus, using some small props and ephemera, she produced 12 stunning floral arrangements. The interpretation of the Parables was excellent and visitors (with the Festival booklet as their guide) could walk around the Church and read the relevant Biblical reference at each Parable arrangement. There were also smaller floral displays at the end of each pew which could be purchased, these were dedicated to family members or friends, past and present. The Sanctuary piece was a special arrangement to the parable of the Great Feast, a triumph in a display of gold and plum roses, placed there because of the reference to the Church’s Eucharist. On the hour, every hour, there was a reading from the Bible and the special Festival Prayer said along with Our Lord’s Prayer. Outside in the Church Courtyard, Strawberry Cream Teas were served with home-made cakes too. What could be better to finish the visit than to sit under the cool canopy and partake of such delicious refreshments? Special mention to all who helped with all the catering arrangements, everybody was very pleased to be part of such a wonderful event. At 6pm on the Sunday, Venerable Dr John Holdsworth and Rev. Geoff Graham led a special service of hymns and readings with flower or garden themes to formally close the Festival. Everybody agreed that it had been a success and all the hard work and dedication had been so worthwhile. A truly memorable event for St. Helena’s Church.

Northern Divers Experience - Warm Waters for a Change A Belfast based British Sub Aqua Club, Dolphin Divers, recently had a successful and enjoyable week-long diving excursion in Cyprus waters. The trip for the 15 experienced divers was organised by Dr. Doros Michail, a member of Dolphin Divers and the Larnaca based Cyprus Sub Aqua Club, whose members accompanied and guided them around popular dive sites. With their accommodation in Protaras, the divers used the local dive centres there and in Larnaca for their air fills and boats as well as making use of Doros’s own bright orange RHIB (rigid hull inflatable boat). Shore dives took place around Cape Greko and at a site called Tunnels and Caves where divers can swim through shallow but picturesque tunnels, many with caves whose walls are covered with colourful marine life, something they had not experienced before. The not-to-be-missed Zenobia wreck in Larnaca harbour (said to be one of the ten best wreck dives in the world) proved extremely popular as well as a day trip to the Paphos area where the clear turquoise sea was likened to the Caribbean albeit without the fish! All the Northerners appreciated the warmer water and much clearer visibility than their colder lochs and seas provide. The abundant and varied fish on the Zenobia with some very large groupers and shoals of barracuda, also the recent arrival of the exotic looking lion fish from the Red Sea provided the photographers amongst them to take some stunning pictures. In appreciation of the help the Cyprus Sub Aqua Club had shown them they generously contributed to CSAC’s club funds which will be used to purchase their own air compressor in due course. If you are a trained diver from any affiliation with your own kit you are welcome to join CSAC, further your training and dive around the island in a friendly and safe club. Oroklini Community Choir Last week the Oroklini Community Choir presented its second concert. Under the excellent directorship of Claire Saul, the Choir sang a medley of songs which were from popular films and shows of the last five decades. They were accompanied by Steve and Mo Whinney on guitar and melodeon, and Marian House on guitar, for some of the numbers. All songs were instantly welcomed by applause from the large audience who had come along to the Oroklini Town Hall Theatre to hear them. Alongside the Choir, there were two songs from the Military Wives Choir too. Although this choir has only been together a short time, their singing was very good. Also, there was a tune from ‘The Mikado’ played superbly by three flautists – Claire Saul, Rebekah Bailey and Isabella Alexandrou. Another musical medley, this time on Sax and flute was by Claire Saul and Mick Allgood, who make up the duo ‘MACS Harmony’ - wonderfully mellow! There was a raffle with many valuable prizes kindly donated by twenty different shops, societies, restaurants and by generous individuals from in and around Oroklini. Special mention was made about this on the night and on the programme, too. Over €900 was raised, some of which will be used for Cancer Research and for the Oroklini Social Fund. Mr Neofitis Fakontis - Mukhtar of Oroklini Village, was presented with the appropriate cheque shortly following the concert. All in all, and judging from the positive responses from the audience on the night and since the concert, Oroklini Community Choir events are going to be even more popular in the future. The Choir is an asset to the village, bringing together singers and all members of this wonderful community. Please see Daxi and local press for upcoming events featuring the Choir. We clean Cyprus in one day - (Let's do it Cyprus)
Many thanks to Emma of Mojitos for allowing us to use her bar/ restaurant as our starting and ending base, also for putting on her fantastic buffet, it must have been like feeding an army. Thank you also to Graham & Jan Foot from Genesis Real Estate and to Emma for providing the lovely T-shirts once again, this year’s blue was a fantastic hit. Also to our loyal supporters and the people that sponsored them, a massive thank you.
A campaign for the cleaning of central roads and green areas was carried out with great success in the Municipality of Deryneia, as part of the Cypriot cleaning campaign ‘We Clean Cyprus in a Day’.
There were 120 adults, 6 children and a dog that walked for our charity, despite the wind that fortunately abated when walking by the sea. You have all helped to raise the fantastic sum of €4,971.
The campaign was organised by the Municipality of Deryneia and the Committee on the Environment and Cleaning of the Municipality in cooperation with the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment.
Simon, your photography is amazing, thank you for supporting us once again this year. www.simonhack.com Jenny Parsons (Secretary Famagusta District Branch)

An Achy Breaky Heart I believe most people will have experienced a broken heart. Whether it was in their teenage years or recently, one thing is for sure it still hurts just as much! No matter how much you rhyme and reason with heartbreak, it doesn’t alleviate the pain and the sense of loss and loneliness can be overwhelming. When we lose someone who is a big part of our everyday life and someone who we hold such love and affection for, how do we take that step forward without them by our side? There are five cycle steps of emotions we embark on. Firstly, it is denial or disbelief that this has happened to you. Then you feel anger at this unforeseen change in your life, followed by a sense of reasoning. We may think it’s for the best, especially if it’s due to someone we have lost due to illness and we take comfort in the fact that they are no longer suffering and are now at peace. Then we can feel an overwhelming sadness and sometimes depression can set in because of the trauma it has created within your life. Finally, the last piece of the puzzle that is most welcomed is acceptance. The feeling that you can reflect and let all the above simply wash away, then you feel that you can look to a life that is going to be different and that happiness once again will be part of it. The experience of losing someone suddenly whether through a relationship, an accident or an illness will never be the same for everyone, we all have our strengths and weaknesses which makes it sometimes more difficult for some than others. Remember no matter how alone you may feel at times, there will always be someone at the end of the phone or a short stroll away that will lift you when you start to feel yourself falling. As with life, there will be good days, there will be bad, but there will always be a tomorrow to cling onto. So, embrace the change and allow it to bring some new chapters to your book of life. The rest of your life starts with one single step and when you are hesitant say to yourself “I can and I will”.

Plates of Octopus A very simple craft this month but I absolutely love how this looks and it is easily something that can be expanded on. You could use these as hanging decorations or use them as part of mural. What you will need: Paper plate Scissors Paint Tissue paper Glue Googly eyes
How to: Step 1 – Start by cutting your paper plate in half and your tissue paper into strips. Step 2 – Using a sponge, paint your paper plate your chosen colour or colours (be sure to paint the reverse side of your plate as on most plates the other side has a gloss finish and your paint won’t stick very well to this) Step 3 – Stick your tissue paper strips to the back of your painted plate half down so that they hang from the flat edge of your plate Step 4 – Glue on some googly eyes as a finishing touch If you are going to hang your octopus, then you will need to punch a hole at the top for the string but if not just use some blue tack to stick it to the wall. I want to do an under the sea mural as we have also made paper plate fish, you can also easily make paper plate whales. We also have boats that we have made by cutting the plates in half. We painted them brown, added portholes and then added a lollipop stick mask and paper sails. One day I will manage to get this put together and then I will post pictures on our Facebook page! Maybe June can be our ‘under the sea month’?! Written by Sam Barnes. Sam Barnes is primarily a stay at home mum of two, who has loved crafting for many years. Referred Pain Pain receptors transmit signals as electrical impulses along nerves to the spinal cord and then to the brain, where it is processed and interpreted as pain. Pain receptors and their nerve pathways differ within the body. For this reason, pain sensation varies with the type and location of injury. Pain receptors in the skin are plentiful and capable of transmitting precise information, including location and whether the source was sharp, dull, hot or cold. In contrast, pain receptors in internal organs, such as the intestines are limited and imprecise. The intestine can be pinched, cut or burned without generating a pain signal. However, stretching and pressure can cause severe intestinal pain, even from something as relatively harmless as trapped wind. The brain cannot identify the precise source of intestinal pain, which is difficult to locate and is likely to be felt over a large area. Sometimes pain felt in one area of the body does not accurately represent where the problem is because the pain is referred there from another area. Pain can be referred because signals from several areas of the body often travel through the same nerve pathways in the spinal cord and brain. Imagine you are on the M25 and you leave at exit 28. At this exit we will assume that 99% of the vehicles will head towards Romford and 1% will head towards Chelmsford. Therefore, any vehicles exiting at junction 28 you will assume they are going towards Romford. The body works the same, the spinal cord represents the M25 and neural pathways from your body exit the spinal cord at certain points. If a certain exit experiences pain, the brain will interpret that as pain at the most common site. For example, the liver and the right shoulder share the same exit point, so the brain will interpret it as right shoulder pain (which is the most common pain), but in fact it could be the liver. It is import to remember ‘common things occur commonly’ so if you have pain it does not necessarily mean there is a life-threatening cause. It is however important to ensure that treatment is sought if the symptoms do not subside. Important questions include: • How long have you had the pain? • Was there a specific injury or did the pain come on slowly or quickly? • Does the pain occur with or without movement? • Does it occur at a certain time of the day? • Can you make it worse with specific movements? • Are there any other symptoms or chronic medical problems? • Have any investigations been carried out to determine the cause? The answers to these questions, along with a physical examination, will provide the information your Osteopath needs to understand the problem and create a treatment plan. THIS ARTICLE ‘REFERRED PAIN’ IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY AND IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL ADVICE. PLEASE SEE VIKKI WOOLLETT FOR AN INDIVIUAL DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLAN.

WhatsApp vs Telegram Multiple Access - Telegram - Allows you to connect to a user name - in fact you can also access it by a smartphone or a tablet without your SIM card. WhatsApp - On the contrary, every time that we change device, we must remove the account from the old smartphone and set the configuration again on the new one. There is no app for tablet. Desktop Client - WhatsApp - Has a simple interface to the smartphone, this means that if your device’s battery is dead or not connected to the internet you cannot use the desktop client. Telegram - The apps for desktop client and smartphone client are completely detached. Cloud - Telegram - Saves all the messages to the cloud and saves them locally. You can decide to automatically delete them every week or every month from the local database and this is a very useful function especially for those smartphones with a little storage capacity. WhatsApp - The chats on the other hand are all in local and pictures, videos and messages must be deleted manually when your smartphone has reached its storage capacity. Attachments - Telegram - Allows you to send non-compressed photos, videos or any other file with a maximum size of 1.5 GB. WhatsApp - Compresses photos and videos that you send via the app, but also allows the forwarding of pdf and office files up to 100 MB each. Safety - WhatsApp - Uses end-to-end cryptography in all the chats so they ensure that they will save on their servers only information such as: date, time and sender’s mobile number. Telegram - Features a cryptography between client and server. This means that all messages are saved to the cloud that the same receiving smartphone must access to for reading the message. End-to-end cryptography, instead, is active for the secret chats and in this case the messages are not saved on the server. Additional Functionalities - WhatsApp - Calling and video-chatting functionalities have been active for a long time. Telegram - Will soon enable calling, but we don’t know about video-chatting, yet. NB: In the groups in both the apps, users can refer to other users’ quotes or messages (it’s like sharing in Facebook). Telegram also has the so-called channels, which are mono-directional chats where a user posts information and the followers can only read but not reply. Conclusions: Which App Do Your Friends Use? Telegram has more functions compared to WhatsApp but the latter has ten times more users than Telegram. Despite your preference, you will probably end up using the one that most of your friends use! If you prefer Telegram, you could try to convince your friends to use it, or otherwise you could resign yourselves to use both, but if you prefer WhatsApp, well… it’s not a problem, as almost everybody uses it. THE LATEST SPORTS AND EVENTS NEWS
LOCAL SPORT - Alki Football Club Alki Oroklini has just won promotion to the top tier of Cypriot football - the club’s third successive promotion, an impressive achievement. The original Alki football club was founded in Larnaca in 1948 and was promoted to the first division for the first time back in 1960. They acquired the nickname ‘immortals’ due to the survival instincts that kept them in the top tier for so many years. However, their luck ran out in 2014 when financial pressures forced the club to go into liquidation and resign from the league. Many thought this would be the end of Alki, but a phoenix was about to rise from the ashes. Omonia Orokini football club voted to change their name to Alki and Andy Loppa became the new club President, promising to take the renamed club into the first division. Alki Oroklini had to start in the fourth division of the Cyprus League. They won it at the first attempt, then achieved promotion to the second division the following year. This meant a change of home ground from the Oroklini Community stadium to a ground share with Nea Salamina at their Ammochostos stadium in Larnaca. Season 2016/17, was a historic season for Alki. Managed by Savvas Damianou, they won the second division championship, 9 points ahead of runners up Paphos and with it promotion to the top tier. Next season will see them competing with other Larnaca based first division sides AEK, Anorthosis, and Nea Salamina, as well as top Nicosia teams Apoel and Omonia, and Limassol’s AEL and Appollon. The Story of Jaguar continued The XK120 - Manufactured from 1948 to 1954, the XK120 was Jaguar's first sports car since the end of production of the SS 100 in 1940. The XK120 was launched in open two-seater form at the London Motor Show in 1948 as a test bed and show car for the new Jaguar XK engine. The car created such a sensation that Jaguar founder and design boss William Lyons put the car into production. Beginning in 1948, the first 242 cars wore wood-framed bodies with aluminium panels. The 120 in the name refers to the car's top speed (even faster with the windscreen removed). This was the world's fastest production car at the time of its launch. In 1949, the first production roadster was delivered to Clark Gable. To meet the demand for the XK120 the bodies were mass-produced in pressed-steel from 1950. They retained aluminium on the doors, bonnet and boot lid. In 1952, a fixed-head coupe took numerous world records for speed and distance when it averaged 100 mph for a week! The 1953/54 XK120's produced 220 bhp. The XK140/150 - The XK140 introduced late 1954, had more substantial front and rear bumpers with overriders. An emblem on the boot lid contained the words ‘winner Le Mans 1951-53’. The interior was made more comfortable for taller drivers by moving the engine, firewall and dash forward to give 3 inches more leg room. In 1956, the XK140 became the first Jaguar sports car to be offered with automatic transmission. The XK150 was announced to the home market in May 1957. It bore a family resemblance to the XK120/140 but was radically revised. A one-piece windscreen replaced the split screen. The previous walnut dash was replaced for one trimmed in leather. Thinner doors gave more interior space. The 3442cc XK engine was increased to 3781cc from 1959. The XK150 3.8S of 1959/60 had a power output of 265 bhp with performance of 130+ mph and 0 to 60 in just over 7 seconds. The E-Type - Made between 1961 and 1975. It's combination of beauty, high performance and competitive pricing made this car an icon of the motoring world. On its release in 1961 Enso Ferrari called it “the most beautiful car ever made”. The E-Type was capable of 150 mph and a 0 to 60 time of around 7 seconds. Based on the Jaguar D-type racing car which had won the Le mans 24 hour in three consecutive years (1955-57) and therefore employed the racing design of a body tub attached to a tubular framework with the engine bolted direct to it. Available as a two-seater convertible or fixed head Coupe. Later model updates of the E-Type were designated ‘series 2 and series 3’, earlier cars being referred to as series 1. The engine used was the 3.8S from the XK150. In October 1964, the engine was increased to 4.2 litre. The power output remained the same but had more torque. Today the most valuable E-type is the series 1 3.8 made between 1961/64. The best choice for me would be the 1964/67 which has retained the styling but has many improvements such as a full synchromesh gearbox and an improved electrical system changed to negative earth. Safety and emissions in the North American market resulted in changes for the series 2 and 3 which in my opinion spoilt the styling and performance. Due to space limitations of this article I cannot cover all the other superb models including the XJ12 which was voted the best car in the world. Written by Graham and Jenny Inch 32

Get Ready for The Best Beach Style! Summer is knocking on our doors and we have all started our diets to get that bikini shape back again! We walk more, exercise more, drink more water etc. Of course, every summer there are new beach trends and this month we are going to check out all the details about this summer’s fashion. I hope you’ve all kept your bra tops! If not, it’s time to hit the shops. Try to combine them with high waisted skirts or thin fabric trousers. Don’t you worry if you think you are too large or too small chested, fortunately, designers have thought about us all. There are so many types, you will manage to find the one that fits you the best.
Here comes the beach bag and pompoms are still in! Last summer, pompoms were our favorite summer trend detail and they are back again this year. They look amazing on shoes, sandals, bags, in fact most things. Buy them in lots of varied colours and as many different shapes as you can and use them on anything you want, maybe on a hat, or as a key hanger, or as hair-clips. Halter tops are all the rage this year. For ultimate style, combine them with a high waist trousers, skirts or shorts - I especially love the vintage ones. Flat sandals are a definite - if they are fluffy you are in trend! Sarongs used to do the trick or simple robes pulled over your swimwear. Now, designers have given us a more modern, more intriguing option to consider. With cover-ups that range in designs and style, in cuts and transparencies and give us all types of different layers. These include sheer pants alongside open weave tops and long-sleeve wraps among others.
Round sunglasses for this summer and they come in super dark lenses or normally light and can be seen on many top designer shows. Bug eyes are pretty much total circles in larger format and we see those appear for summer as well, though not in as many detailed designs as in the past.
Holidays Before I moved to Cyprus and had my children, the type of holidays that I seemed to enjoy was very predictable. Although I enjoyed going to visit different countries, I may as well have just kept going to the same place each time because I rarely ventured further than the pool or the bar! In theory, I liked the idea of exploring new places, getting out and about to discover what the country had to offer but the lure of relaxing in the sun and getting a bit of a tan was just too much. Since spending many afternoons by the pool or beach with the boys, I can't imagine that a typical 2-week beach holiday with them would have been appealing to me. We only ever managed at most a couple of hours before heading home due to having a bored / tired toddler, or a baby eating the sand! I’ve always wondered and even been slightly envious how the families that you see on holiday manage to spend all day by the pool and then go out in the evening with their little kids. Suddenly the holiday doesn't sound so relaxing to me, it’s not something that I would have fancied saving for all year. I’d need another holiday at the end to recover! (much like I did after my 2-week long party holiday at the age of 18!) These days my outlook on holidays has changed completely. I’m not sure that I would want to sit for 2 weeks doing nothing in the sun, I think I’d be bored now without the panic of trying to get a nice suntan in two weeks. The thought of exploring different countries would be a whole lot more appealing, although I’m not sure the kids would agree. I am lucky in that we live in a popular holiday destination and so some of the things I would have looked forward to all year - start to become the norm. Nothing was more exciting than being in an outdoor pool and not freezing, or a day at the beach when it was warm and sunny and you could build sandcastles without wearing a coat. My boys enjoy the beach but it will never have the same amazement for them that it held for me. I now dream of taking my boys on a holiday to England to show them places where I grew up. They have no idea of what England is like and I’m sure they don’t believe me when I tell them that the summers are quite different from what they are used to here in Cyprus. One day we will take them back for a couple of weeks and visit museums and theme parks etc, although that sounds a lot more expensive than a 2-week holiday in the sun would have cost so maybe we’ll just stay here! Kapparis Beaches
Malama Beach Sunbeds / Umbrellas Watersports Nearby Restaurant Parking Toilets
If you are looking for peace and quiet, then Malama Beach in Kapparis is a great option for you. The beach is sandy and the area tranquil. There are water sports here on Malama Beach as well as a sea view restaurant above the beach itself for meals and refreshments. Great for families due to the shallow waters. Fireman's Beach also known as Kapparis Beach is located at the end of a one Kilometres track in the Kapparis area, outside Paralimni. This is a relatively secluded beach with golden sand and shallow clear waters. You can even see Famagusta Ghost Town on a clear day from here. It has basic facilities and is popular with locals, with it’s name deriving from the Fireman’s station located at the top of the bay, where there is also a kiosk. There are many small coves with beaches along the coast in Kapparis. These smaller Kapparis Beaches tend to be less busy than most but in the peak season of July and August these beaches tend to attract a lot of locals and people from other areas of Cyprus. Ayia Triada Beach is situated in an area of the same name that sits between Kapparis and Pernera. Ayia Triada Beach is a picturesque area with a small harbour and picture perfect chapel. The beach is sandy and sun loungers are available. The water is shallow, so once again it is great for families but, if you are feeling a little more active there are walking trails from here all over the coast line.
Pernera Beaches
Sirena Bay Beach Sunbeds / Umbrellas Toilets Nearby Restaurants Parking
Sirena Bay is a hidden gem situated between Kapparis and the main area of Pernera in a small ‘mid’ location known as Ayia Triada. Sirena Bay Beach has been extended very recently by the local Municipality. Sun beds are available for the beach area and for the elevated area which surrounds the Sirena Bay Restaurant. A place where you can swim, sunbathe or sit in the beautiful surroundings overlooking the Mediterranean whilst drinking your favourite cocktail or frappe. Pernera Beach is one of the nicest sandy beaches on the South East coast of Cyprus. It is also known as Pernera P Beach due to the fact that there is another beach called Pernera beach in Ayia Napa. Water sports, sun beds and umbrella hire are available on site. Accommodation facilities, taverns and pubs are available nearby, while lifeguards are on duty with lifesaving equipment from 10.00am - 6.00pm during the summer months. The view across the beach rests on a beautiful Cypriot church against the skyline and the water is shallow so well suited to families. Polyxenia Beach is a lovely sandy beach and also brings you to the beginning of the Boardwalk which makes a beautiful route to stroll between Pernera and its parent resort Protaras. Just along this Boardwalk in Pernera before you come to the end of Polyxenia Beach, is Marlita Beach. A sandy little beach with a gently sloping bay.

Protaras Beaches
Fig Tree Bay - Protaras Blue Flag Accreditation Car Parking Disabled Access Toilets / Showers Changing Rooms Lifeguard (9am - 6pm) Watersports Sunbeds / Umbrellas
Protaras boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Cyprus, particularly Fig Tree Bay, recently voted 4th best beach in Europe in the 2016 Trip Advisor Poll. Named after the fig trees that grow close to its coastline, Fig Tree Bay offers a long stretch of fine, white sand with clean and shallow water making it ideal for families especially those with small children. Another popular location is the very busy Protaras Beach which is ideal for snorkelling due to its shallow waters. Protaras Beach is only a short distance from the resort centre and offers sun worshippers a long strip of fine golden sand with Blue Flag accreditation and lifeguards on duty in the summer season. Water sports and restaurant facilities are also available close by. Green Bay Beach is located to the south of Protaras Beach. It is less crowded and therefore great for swimming or picnics. Sun loungers and umbrellas are also available to hire here but other amenities are limited. This is also a very popular location for scuba diving. Konnos Bay Beach is one of the most picturesque beaches in Cyprus, located just off the main coastal road between Protaras and Ayia Napa. It is 200m long and offers beautiful golden sands, excellent water sport facilities, umbrella and sun bed hire, lifeguards on duty during the summer season and provides easy access for cars, motorbikes, bicycle’s and pedestrians. Konnos Bay also offers fantastic shelter, protecting the beach, its bathers and its swimmers from high winds, helping to keep waters in the bay calm.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall… Who has the fairest of them all? The many blessings of Cyprus do not include having huge home stores where your ideal mirror is just a few miles away (and no, I don’t want a Homebase just down the road) but we do have great glass companies where ‘bespoke’ is the norm. Necessity being the mother of invention, or at least lateral thinking, what might we do to make the most of ‘bespoke’? Typically, mirrors are looked upon as accessories or afterthoughts, rather like pictures, but there is a great deal to be said for looking at them (no pun intended) as a major part of a room design. This works really well if the room is either rather dark or very small, and a fairly large area is mirrored to reflect the light or reflect the rest of the room. Designing and positioning of bespoke tall, wide – or huge - mirrors turns a practical requirement into a design feature. They also add interest when seen through an open doorway. Of course, the other design element of the mirror is the frame and unfortunately this is where we have a lack of choice. However, you can mosaic a frame onto the mirror, stick on a frame or stick the mirror glass onto a painted ply board or within a pre-prepared frame. This all assumes that you are practical or ‘crafty’; if not, you might take a look at www.in-domo.net in Nicosia where they have unusual mirrors, and a great first time buy discount. Of course, we do look in mirrors as well as at them, mostly in the bathroom. As far as women are concerned, there are things we need to know about (in our old showroom, we had a 10x magnifying mirror which was terrifying if happened upon unexpectedly) and things we don’t: we had a notice on another mirror which said “I need someone to invent a mirror that leaves out some of the details” and that’s pretty much the kind of mirror we would like elsewhere in the house, wouldn’t we? Yoko Ono allegedly said “Smile in the mirror. Do that every morning and you’ll start to see a big difference in your life”. She may have a point. Try not smiling at this joke from the 2 old Devon ladies, April and June: A young lady was given a wishing mirror by an elf to whom she had done a good turn. ‘Mirror, mirror on the door, make my bust a 34’ she said, and lo and behold, she had a lovely bosom. Her husband wondered whether the mirror would work for him and while his wife was out, he said ‘Mirror, mirror on the door, make my dongle touch the floor’. And his legs fell off! Plants for Bedrooms
Compost Corner
I am often asked the question - are there any plants that will help you sleep? There are quite a few plants that studies have shown to reduce anxiety and stress. Lavender is probably the best known. The smell is often used to reduce babies crying and to send them into a deeper sleep. Its calming effect reduces the heart rate and lowers blood pressure and stress; it also helps to keep mosquitos away.
Watching plants grow can be very exciting but usually you cannot see what is happening underground but if you plant something in a glass container you will be able to see your roots appearing.
One of NASA’S top plants for purifying air was the English Ivy, its leaf can improve the symptoms of allergies and asthma. In an experiment, English Ivy removed 94% of air borne faeces and 78% of air borne mould in just 12 hours and it looks great in a hanging basket but it is toxic to pets and children. Also known as reed palms, this small plant is a fantastic air purifier removing smells and toxins and helps a good night’s sleep. Remember to wipe the leaves of your plants and keep them dust free so that they can do their job effectively.
If you want to see something a little different than just roots then you could try growing carrots, radish or spring onions in a larger glass container such as an old fish tank filled with soil. Plant your seeds near to the front of the tank then you can watch them growing. If you chop the top off a carrot and place it in water on a cup saucer you can watch the top leaves appear and grow. If you are lucky your leaves will go to seed and you can grow some new carrots.

SALES - RENTALS - DEEDS - MORTGAGES - LEGALITY - ADVICE
Selling Your Home - How Does it Work? Most of our Vendors, of all nationalities, have never sold a house in Cyprus before and the first question we are asked is “how does it work & what is the process?” I thought it would be useful for our readers to understand and to remove the mystery! Usually you will find a good agent to market your property and sign an agreement with them for the sale of the house. Most agents work on no sale – no fee and currently, most work on a non-exclusive basis. The listing agent will usually do some background checks on the property to ensure they know the legal situation (where you don’t have full title deeds). Once you have agreed to work together the agent will photograph the house, compose the property advert and ask for your approval. At this stage the property is passed to the sales and marketing team who will advertise through a variety of mediums including the Company’s own website. They will also send your details to clients on the waiting list and thereafter will accompany interested clients to view your house. Once a client is ready to make an offer on the house, you will be called to discuss and (hopefully) agree a selling price. After an offer is verbally accepted, a reservation agreement will be drafted to outline the terms of the sale, what is included (inventory of furniture etc), the deposit, how the sale price will be paid and the anticipated completion date. This document will be signed by both parties and then sent to both sets of lawyers as the basis for the future contract. The next step is to draft sale contracts (assignment contracts where there are no Title Deeds) and approve these by both sides for signature. Stamp duty is then paid by the buyer and an application is made to the Tax Office for Capital Gains tax clearance. The tax office will check the file for any tax liabilities of the vendor and then issue a certificate that the property is clear. All property taxes must be paid up to date including Immoveable Property tax, Sewage tax (if applicable) and Municipal Property tax. Finally, you are ready to complete the sale and all parties will visit the Land Registry Office to register the contract or transfer the title deed to the new buyer. At this point you will receive the full funds usually by way of a Banker’s draft to be deposited into your account. There are a lot of steps to go through but with goodwill on both sides, the process can be completed within 4-6 weeks of the offer being made. Thanks to Island Homes for contributing this article. Communal Property Advice While there are many benefits to owning a property in a communal building, development or resort, there are also additional concerns. Your fellow owners and neighbours become part of your investment, almost as if they were indirect partners. They can negatively affect your investment as much as a bad business partner can affect a business. Therefore, it’s essential when purchasing property with communal facilities that you properly understand the unique aspects relating to communal property ownership.
Do you have any questions you would like answered about the above article, or looking for FREE expert advice on the many aspects of Communal Property Ownership? Visit the online resource with advice and information on all aspects of Apartment and Communal property ownership www.CyprusCommunalGuide.com or email advice@CyprusCommunalGuide.com.
If you missed it in last month’s article I discussed how to answer one of the most common objections, “my friend said his communal fees are half what I pay, I must be paying too much”. In this article, I will discuss how to answer another one of the most common objections given to paying their communal fees. This article is the fourth in a series of on how to answer common owner payment objections.
Want to view the complete set of regulations? A high resolution, indexed copy of the Property Regulations can be downloaded at www.Download-IPA.com or on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06WLPZG35/
This issue: Answering Common Objections (4)

Objection 3 - I will only pay my communal fees when the committee do ‘XYZ’ It’s a common objection, a single unit owner is unhappy with the way things are done, or how maintenance issues are prioritised. So, they effectively hold their payment as ransom until what they want gets done. How to deal with these objections? The committee are elected as representatives of the unit owners. The reason for this election is so that they can make the necessary day-day decisions without going to an owner discussion and vote which would bring the operations of the complex to a grinding halt. You, as the committee, have every right to do things in the way you feel is best (within the requirements of the regulations of course). If an individual owner does not agree with this, the regulations do not give them any framework to withhold fees until they get their way. Non-payment should be treated like any other non-payment and pursued with the same effort. This all being said; prevention is far easier in these circumstances than cure. So, the easiest way to help arm yourself against these types of objections is to keep owners informed and involved. In addition to major voting items being taken at the AGM, you can poll owners regularly to get their opinion and preference on smaller items. For example, if the committee are deciding on whether it’s best to repaint the corridor, or plant a new garden, send this out by email as an informal vote to owners and use these responses to guide your decision. This way, if any objection is made, you can point to the fact the majority agreed with that decision and everything is performed democratically. 58

Petra’s Lemon Drizzle Cake Firstly, I would like to say a big well done to my boss and Editor – Nat! Great show on the Expat Radio, I enjoyed listening to it while doing my prepping work, keep it up. ‘IT JUST GETS NUTTIER WITH NAT’! My lovely barmaid Petra makes this delicious lemon drizzle cake and she is always bringing it to work for all the staff. It is just right with a lovely cuppa before we get busy! Remind me to send you some Nat for when you are doing your radio show, it’s perfect to nibble on and to keep you going! Ingredients: 175 gms of butter (unsalted) 175 gms of icing sugar 175 gms of self raising flour 2 tbsp of milk 3 eggs 2 lemons (grate the rind) squeeze the juice 100 gms of granulated sugar Method: • Sieve the flour into a bowl. • Beat the eggs with the icing sugar lightly. • Soften the butter until almost melted and add the eggs, sugar, butter and the milk to the flour. Start to mix using a hand-held mixer on low speed and when evenly mixed add the grated rind. • Lightly grease a loaf tin with a little butter and pour your mixture in. • Place into a pre-heated oven, medium hot, about 165. The cake needs 40 to 50 mins depending on your oven. You can check your cake at around 40 mins by pricking it with a kebab stick, if it comes out dry it’s ready - if not, leave it until the 50 mins. • When it’s ready, take it out and make several holes on the top using your kebab stick. While the cake is cooking keep mixing the granulated sugar with the lemon juice until the sugar is dissolved. Pour it over the cake while it is still warm. If you do not like your cake too ‘lemony’, only put the juice of one lemon. When it has cooled down take it out carefully as it will be very soft.

Pet of the Month Meet Micky! Micky is a hound mix who measures 53cm shoulder height and was born in 2008. A fabulous dog who is very easy going. He is gentle, quiet and is not demanding. Micky gets on well with other dogs and cats. Micky walks well on the lead and loves cuddles. We never have any trouble at all with Micky because he is so easy going. He will make a good loyal companion. Micky really deserves a lovely quiet retirement home away from the shelter. I wonder if he will be a lucky dog - we hope so! He is fully vaccinated and neutered.
Ask Gina Dear Gina, a friend of a friend offered to give me 1 or 2 kittens once they were ready to leave their mother. I thought it would be a great idea because I don’t have any other cats and 1 by itself might be lonely, so my friend went and picked up both kittens yesterday and brought them to me. They were shying away at first and hissed and spat at me from under the settee when I tried to touch them. Today they are much bolder and have come into the kitchen together. Basically, this is the first time I’ve seen them properly since they arrived. One of the kittens is walking fine but I was quite shocked to see that the other one is wobbling. It even wobbles when it’s eating or drinking. I have been keeping an eye on it and the wobble seems to be constant, it has also lost its balance a few times. I called the original owner of the kittens and she says it wasn’t like that before it came to me. Do you think it might have had a stroke or something? Regards, Anna Z. Dear Anna, that doesn’t sound like a stroke to me, especially since it’s only a kitten. It could be something simple like the kitten is undernourished and weak. If this is the case, then vitamins and plenty of food will quickly sort out the problem. On the other hand, it could be something more serious like a neurological disorder. It could be C.H. which means Cerebellar Hypoplasia. It’s where the part of the brain that controls motor skills and coordination is under developed and the kitten would have been born like that. Maybe the original owner of the kitten didn’t notice it, or maybe she assumed it was because it was still learning to walk. Cats with C.H. can lead a good life. There is some medication that can be given to help it but it will not cure it. It isn’t in any pain and I’m so glad you got both kittens because the wobbly kitten will try hard to do exactly what his sibling is doing. Visit a veterinary doctor for the correct diagnosis. Regards, Gina.

Bina and Buster’s Big Adventure It was a bit like puppies really. They were not given names by their manufacturers. He was simply AK707 Portable. She was EG2468 domestic use only. It was left to their new owners whether to bestow them with pet names or not. After her purchase, she had been named Concubina, Bina for short by her master. The male doll, she later found out, had been christened Buster Big Boy by his mistress. Honestly though, it was no life at all, she was left all day in an unheated and darkened bedroom. Sometimes the family’s stud dog, Bruce, would nudge open the door with his nose and proceed to drag her up and down the stairs by her ankle. When the master came home, dependent on his mood, he might throw her across the bed and do what he wanted with her before clearing off down the pub. One night he left the curtains slightly open and she spotted for the very first time Buster Big Boy. The lady who lived over the road carried him out of her house and strapped him into the front passenger seat of her car. To scare off any ‘would be muggers’ she had dressed him in a hunky reefer jacket and a leather cap pulled down over his eyes. Concubina thought how very manly he looked as he was driven off down the road. Next day the master went to work forgetting to feed the stud dog. Later in the day Brucie Boy, being crazed with hunger, went off on one big time. Concubina was hiding in fear under the bed, but he still managed to bite off her ears. The master seemed to lose interest in her after that. Later that week he dumped her in the builder’s skip outside the house next door. The builders threw rubbish over her and made lewd comments about her naked body. She glanced up sadly at the bedroom window opposite. Buster Big Boy was leaning out watching her plight. There was a tear or two trickling off his cheeks. Suddenly he fell out of the window, but with the help of a bracing west wind up his tail he glided gracefully across the road nudging her off the skip. All tangled up together they landed on the roof bars of a passing hearse. The hearse cruised sedately along Margate sea front. Just as they were passing the Turner Contemporary Art Gallery they became victims of a lusty sea breeze that swept them through the open doors of a Tracey Emin Exhibition. The sweethearts were left abandoned and unnoticed stuck in the missionary position under the staircase. However, their unwitting piece de resistance was later snapped up for big bucks by a passing US billionaire rom com movie star who shipped them back to his mansion in Beverly Hills where they inflated together happily ever after. Hello all you Spring chickens... Well, we are slowly starting to live the dream and the temperatures are starting to rise. I suppose you want to know about my next scheme – sadly it was a little X rated and I was unable to print it! However, other ideas have come to mind! I must tell you that I do have some qualifications under my belt - window dressing, colour coordinating (Martins School of Art), cosmetic consulting and nail technician is among them. I'm also a qualified aqua fit and swimming teacher. I'm also very good at giving advice on any of those activities. Back to my next idea - have you made a bucket list? It's all about could have, would have, should have! What about Sky Diving or Hang Gliding? I can arrange for a qualified person to go with you and you don't have to walk or exercise. Many people are booking this, however, you must have insurance. You will be well looked after and as you soar into the blue sky, the peace and quiet is mind blowing, you will also have a qualified diver with you. How about scuba diving? You may laugh but you don't have to be a swimmer or wear your glasses or deaf AIDS again it's a challenge!! I would like all of you to make a bucket list. It can be absolutely anything, what do you wish to achieve? Tell me and I will try and make your dream come true. This also applies to men who would love to achieve something that you never thought possible. Other ideas are cookery, pottery and mosaic. I'm trying to organise a wine tasting trip. Also there is a new activity which is SAND dwelling, it's quite different and rewarding. When I hear of all the sad losses in Cyprus, I realise that every day is a bonus so we must get out there and go for it – so sit down, think about it and write your bucket list! I will tell you more next time, love to you all. Laraine Passes xxx Every month we will feature the best creative writing and poems sent in by our readers. Contributions should be submitted no later than the 5th of the month prior to print. Max 400 words. Send your contributions to: info@thedaxigroup.com either in a word document or the body of an email. Don’t forget to include your name and where you live. 70

Noodles Not Included Although I have been cooking from around the age of 10, I have never had any formal training, I am almost completely self-taught. I have worked in several commercial kitchens over the years, starting as a humble KP rising to Chef Manager. My passion is to cook for friends and family, in fact there is nothing that I like more! However, sometimes home cooking can become a little stale, then you look at the menus in restaurants and think to yourself, if only I could cook that, or even afford to cook it! This is where the inspiration for this book comes from. It is filled with recipes for dishes I have either created and developed over the years, or others where I have deconstructed and reassembled recipes with more affordable ingredients and methods. The flavours and textures remain intact - but at a more affordable price! The recipes I have created are mostly inexpensive dishes designed for family use and dinner parties where you want to impress, but not get too complicated in doing so. The book is not just about saving pennies; it is also about learning and using techniques and practices, used by the professionals in a domestic situation. It contains all the information and explanations where needed, for you to create the dishes. There are also full colour photos of the finished dishes. Written by Adrian Berry B.Sc.
The Magical Law of Attraction The Law of Attraction is an invisible force of the Universe that attracts and rejects energies. In other words, when energies are the same an attraction takes place and when they are different an attraction cannot take place. Everything in the entire Universe is made up of vibrating energy, therefore, when you find yourself drawn to certain people, situations or things, this is because both your energies must have resonated at some point – this is the Law of Attraction in action. This magnificent Law is present in absolutely everything we think, feel and do. It is present in our intentions and beliefs, it is present even while we sleep. This magical Law is always working for us 24/7, but some use it to their advantage while others to their disadvantage. For the Law of Attraction to work for you, it requires you to release negativity; fill your thoughts, words, and energies with positivity and possibilities; know exactly what you want, then simply allow Universal life to flow.
