Advertising with Daxi

Hello, Daxi readers and welcome to the February edition of Daxi! Time is flying by, I can't believe I am already writing about Valentine’s Day and Cyprus Carnivals. It will soon be the tourist season again! We have a really exciting year ahead of us here at Daxi with so much to look forward to. This year our tourist guide which we release in May will be written in both English and Russian for the first time, to help our advertising clients and villa and apartment owners cater to both tourist markets. We will also see the launch of the 2018 Business Awards with nominations starting in September, so keep your eye out for quality products, services and businesses, charities or individuals you feel are worthy of nomination! Finally, don't forget our Information Center is still open to the public despite the roadworks. We can provide advice and information on most subjects related to living and working in Cyprus as well as give information on product and service providers. We also offer a photocopying and printing service for those who don't have access to printers or scanners. Our office is open throughout the winter Mon - Fri 9am - 1pm. Please call in or give us a call on: 23 040 940. The Daxi Group is made up of a group of companies designed to give help, support, and information to businesses, residents and tourists alike so please don't hesitate to take advantage of these services. We are here to help! Until next month....

FAMAGUSTA REGION L o c a l - C o m m u n i t y - N e w s - E v e n t s - P e o p l e Collection of Food for the Needy Families of the Municipality of Deryneia The pensioners of the Municipality of Deryneia, on their own initiative, like every year, this year gathered food for the needs of the Social Welfare Committee of the Municipality. Food was offered through the Committee to the poor families of the Municipality during Christmas. On her own initiative, the Directorate of the Nursery School ‘Arkoudinos’ gathered food and clothing for the needs of the Committee. Essential items were received by the Mayor and members of the City Council, expressing their warm thanks for the initiative to support more than 50 families in Deryneia. By Deryneia Municipality

Daxi Christmas Collection Success Thanks to everyone who contributed to our annual Daxi Christmas Collection. Generous businesses and residents of the Eastern Cyprus community came together in December to show our less fortunate neighbours what charity is all about. Collections were made throughout Eastern Cyprus drop off points of packaged and long life foods, toiletries, blankets, baby supplies and wrapped Christmas presents for less fortunate children and their families. The collection was a huge success so thank you to all our individual and business donors, our drop off points and of course our amazing team of volunteers on the day. All donations were delivered to KEPA charity in Paralimni, who help feed and give support to vulnerable families in both the Famagusta and Larnaca regions.

Happy 12th Birthday Alfie! With lots of love from Mum and Dad! xxxxx Have you had a charity or community event? A Birthday Anniversary or Wedding Celebration? Or do you have information you would like to share about our community? Send in your stories, notices and announcements to us with a minimum of one high resolution picture and we will do our best to print them in our next edition of Daxi. Send your contributions to: info@thedaxigroup.com Deadline for each issue is 12th of the month. Don't forget to include your full name and telephone number in case we need to clarify details with you.

Ammochostos Carnival 2018 Dear friends, young and old, have you heard? For the 11th consecutive year the institution we all love comes back with many new surprises. The Ammochostos Carnival 2018! The most ‘lively’ and ‘crazy’ moment of the year has arrived and from the beginning of 2018, the Carnival is here. Thursday 8th of February: We’re celebrating in Mitropoleos square, in the centre of Paralimni with plenty of food, drink and music! The King of the Carnival will enter the square, where the Coronation will take place, meaning the official launch of the Carnival. Saturday 17th of February: Night-foot parade. We will be wearing our crazy costumes and we will be parading in the streets. There will be an outdoor party in the square with a DJ and plenty of madness. Sunday 18th of February: The Great Carnival Parade. Please note that the Grand Parade route will be the same as in previous years (any modification will be announced). Entries for parading groups has started. Apply to secure your themed group! You can find your participation forms in the Municipality's offices or electronically on the website of the Municipality of Paralimni (Announcements). The last day for applications is on the 5th of February 2018. For more information, please call 23819303 or 23819212. By Paralimni Municipality

Happy 60th Birthday Helen for the 19th of February from your adoring husband Howard and little Treacle Tart! xxx

LARNACA REGION L o c a l - C o m m u n i t y - N e w s - E v e n t s - P e o p l e Christmas Campaign and Donations of Med High Charity Club Med High Charity Club had an ambitious but simple goal this Christmas; to put a smile on the face of as many people as possible in our local community. Thanks to the generosity and kind heartedness of our pupils, parents, teachers and friends we achieved that goal and much more! Christmas boxes full of toys, food and treats were delivered to the following organisations: • Larnaca ‘Soup Kitchen’ • St Spiridonas Special School • Positive Voice (HIV/AIDS Resource Centre) • Children at the Kofinou Refugee Camp • Six families battling either illness or poverty Pupils from our preschool, junior school and high school were involved in all aspects of the campaign from the collection of donations to the delivery. Not only did we show our children the power of teamwork, but by exposing them to issues in our community, we believe they have become more empathetic individuals and more appreciative of their own lives.

SSAFA Say - Something to Watch Out For! SAC Joel Pickersgill, stationed at Akrotiri Cyprus, will be taking part in the IPA World Pool Championships in February and he is hoping to progress through a few rounds. The event is going to be televised around the world on the following channels: SKY 424, BT 95, FREESAT 252, FREEVIEW 95 and TALKTALK 95 as well as being streamed online. Joel will be wearing a shirt featuring the SSAFA logo. He said "I am hoping that wearing your logo at such a worldwide event will help in promoting the already great work you all do." Good luck Joel! SSAFA Walk 2018 On Saturday, 2nd of December, an intrepid group of people met at The Corfu Taverna to take part in a Sponsored Walk to raise funds for SSAFA (Cyprus Branch). More than 20 people walked 3.5 miles around Oroklini to raise much needed funds for this worthy cause. At the Taverna, there was also a Grand Raffle, with the winning tickets pulled that morning. Many great prizes were on show for this raffle and altogether €993 was raised for that part alone. When the walkers returned, a welcome brunch was available for them and was heartily enjoyed by all. In all, a grand total of €1,800 was raised. A wonderful result and everybody agreed that it had been an excellent fundraiser. For more details on SSAFA, please contact: SSAFA Cyprus Branch on 25963647, e-mail: sssafacyprus@ssafa.org.uk. Helen Barrett - Larnaca Community Writer

Cut You a Key to My Heart If I cut you a key to my heart to let you inside, would you tear it apart? Those tear stained walls scarred deep within that could tell you a tale, but where to begin? If I cut you a key to my heart. Tread carefully it's delicate and fragile Too long without hugs, too long without smiles It's a miracle how it learned to cope So long without love, so long without hope Should I cut you a key to my heart? Desperate measures for times like these Don't think you can come and go as you please If I cut you a key

February smiles your way. You get hit on, receive indecent proposals, romantic declarations and come-ons. Your approach will be a bit more practical and realistic. February brings a breath of fresh air into your professional life, with exciting projects. You have luck through personal charm or connections and money, so success is a sure thing. You’re in excellent shape. Do something special and original, that will draw the admiration of others!

Circumstances are conducive to the beginning or deepening of love. February is a dynamic and productive month in terms of professional life. You’re driven to get things done and make plans. Groups, community, associations, foundations, brotherhoods, parties and so on are also significant. You might feel a drop in tonus; you need to rest more and your immunity may be weaker. Express yourself in an artistic or creative way.

Socialising encourages harmony in the couple and attending events can be favourable for the beginning of a relationship. You do well when it comes to group projects or becoming part of a collective that has common desires or interests. February is generous but demands a bit more restraint. You should take better care of yourself and not take chances. Dare to start a new professional project!

Think well because appearances can be deceiving! February brings achievements and success. Travels, team work, clientele and alliances are good. REVIEWS - MUSIC - BOOKS - FILMS - OPINIONS

Book Review: Coffee Shop University Coffee Shop University, a book written by Mario Kfoury, is an unusual story that touches subjects like mythology, philosophy, spirituality, psychology, religion, anthropology, politics, economics and ecology. The book could be characterised as a chronicle, written from personal knowledge and experiences through the eyes of the author. The book starts in Los Angeles, in 1999, describing the life of the author, chasing the American dream, training in martial arts and physical education. The author illustrates details of his origin from Beirut, Lebanon and passes also from Florida and London. While reading the book you can see the philosophical quest of the author from religion to cultural restrictions that were forced onto him. The book touches important topics like Karma, the Stockholm Syndrome, the Elliott Wave Principle, ethics and moral standards, and the void between science and spirituality. Coffee Shop University is educational but at the same time the author is using a sharp and fierce way of writing, while he explores all of these big ideas and principles, in an almost bohemian and avant-garde approach.

Movie Review: La La Land La La Land is an American production of 2016, a musical romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle.

As success comes closer, they must make decisions that threaten their love affair, as they try really hard to hold onto their dreams.

La La Land was praised by critics for both performances of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, as well as the screenplay of Damien Chazelle. The movie broke a record, winning 7 awards at the 74th Golden Globe Awards and basically winning in every category it was nominated. Spring / Summer 2018

The spring / summer 2018 fashion trends are bright, bold and quite beautiful. In fact, it is a show season full of actual fashion moments and that's not an exaggeration. The hue to embrace is lilac. Your shoulders are going to have a whole new look and sequins are now doable all day, any day. Here’s your guide to the spring 2018 fashion season ahead. The Colour: Lilac Millennial pink has had its day. We’re heading into the violet hour, with designers embracing lilac for everything from tailoring to bouncy hemmed party dresses. Reinvent the colour wheel now by wearing a lavender jumper with grey wool trousers or a glossy, black vinyl pencil skirt. The Cover up: Trench Coats The perennial wardrobe staple now comes in new guises. Chopped up, embroidered or patch worked, anything goes as long as it’s not a standard issue beige mac. The Icon: Queens The Italian designers focused on embellishment and light-up tiaras. The Clash: Red with Pink An odd combination but these two-tone dresses were all over the runways. The Throwback: Old-school Logos The biggest fashion houses have followed Calvin Klein’s lead and gone bold with their logos, showing them on everything from tees to trouser suits. Special mention goes to the Burberry check. The Sparkle: Sequins for Day Jewels and sequins are no longer reserved for party season. This time around, the top designers were out to embellish the most mundane items in our wardrobes, punctuating everything from khakis to racer back vests with a hint of glitter. The Jeans: Dark Denim A distinct indigo dye job washed over most of the collections, giving an early 2000s vibe to every pair of jeans on the catwalk. The smartest trick? Your denim now comes tailored, in tapered trousers and fitted blazers, making it entirely office appropriate. The Focal Point: Shoulders It’s all about the size, shape and silhouette of shoulders. From XXL to completely cut-out and wing-like, you won’t be able to shrug it off. The Icing on the Cake: Frothy Dresses As if the candy floss colors were not enough to sweeten a spring palette, several designers have also employed its sugary textures. Silk organza was whipped into ruffles on featherweight dresses, gathered into voluminous skirts and twisted into ball gowns. To sum up, for Spring 2018 colour is the key (whether bold or pastel), the '80s won't quit and if you're going to do power dressing in our current times, you don't have to be all shoulders and stilettos; but the option is most definitely there. Shifting gears from the street's athleisure boom in 2016 - 2017, there's a prettier, softer mood in the air and girls who like to dress up will be thrilled. Minimalists and tomboys have plenty to choose from too. Written by Elena Leontiou

Scientific Watercolours As we are all aware this month is the month of love. With Valentine’s Day being celebrated across the world this gives me the opportunity to do loads of crafts and activities with the kids. Normally most of what we do revolves around love, hearts, cards and gifts but this year I thought I might as well add a bit of science into the mix too. A couple of years ago we did a science activity using fizzing hearts, which was a great experiment so I decided to take a look at different types of reactions this time as well as doing a bit of colour mixing.

What you will need: Watercolours Paintbrushes Water Watercolour paper Wax crayons Clear glue

How you do it:

1) The best thing is to do this craft yourself first whilst the kids watch; that way you can ask them questions as you go, get predictions from them and discuss the results. So grab yourself a piece of paper and a crayon and draw a picture. 2) Get your paintbrush and get some watercolour paint on it. Ask the kids what they think will happen when you paint over your picture. Will it disappear under the paint? As an adult we know that the wax in the crayon will create a waterproof barrier and it will automatically repel the water but the kids will probably not expect this and will love seeing the paint roll off of the crayon. 3) Add another watercolour to your drawing and ask the kids what will happen when the second colours mix together. At this point you can have some real fun with trial and error colour mixing with them. 4) Whilst your paint is still wet get your clear glue and ask the kids what they think will happen if you put a drop of glue on your painting. Again the glue, like the crayon, resists the paint but as you are applying it on to the paint you can actually see where it pushes the paint and creates a ring around itself. 5) Allow your scientific artwork to dry. We made heart themed pictures but obviously you can draw anything. You could also try writing secret valentines messages in white crayon so that when your little ones paint on the surface of the paper your message will appear. The kids loved doing this as they love anything to do with painting and really enjoy a bit of science too. I hope you have some fun with this craft / activity and I wish everyone a lovely Valentine’s Day! Written by Sam Barnes. Pillow Talk Sleep is the most elemental of human needs; it refreshes and rejuvenates the body. Getting enough sleep can be difficult, especially if you can't get comfortable. Since you spend about one third of your life sleeping, the pillow you choose is an important part of preventing or managing pain. If you wake up with neck pain, your pillow may not be supporting you correctly. The neck curves slightly forward and it’s important to maintain this curve when resting. If the height of the pillow is incorrect it can cause muscle strain to the neck and shoulders. The best position for sleeping is on your back or side, although many people can only sleep on their front. The wrong pillow can cause or worsen: - Neck aches and pains. - Numbness or pins and needles. - Headaches. How can you tell if your pillow is causing problems? - You wake up with more aches and pains than when you went to bed. - Your sleep gets disturbed by neck aches and pains. - You find yourself ‘propping up’ the pillow. Do you need a pillow? Sleeping without one is not recommended. At night, you want your body to be in a neutral but comfortable position. How many pillows? One good pillow used correctly. If you use two pillows they can become separated, impacting on the support you need. How should I use a pillow? Whether you lie on your back or on your side, the rules are the same. The pillow should enable the neck and head to be supported in a neutral position. Don’t let your shoulders and upper back rest on the pillow. Don’t let the head alone rest on the pillow. The pillow should be pulled in and tucked underneath the neck, so to avoid a ‘space’ under the neck. Using a pillow while sleeping on your back A pillow should support the natural curvature of the cervical spine. Placing a pillow beneath the knees further alleviates and places less strain on the lower back. Using a pillow while sleeping on your side A pillow should support the head and neck such that the spine maintains a straight and natural horizontal line. Weight should be evenly distributed so as not to create unnatural bending or pressure. Using a pillow while sleeping on your stomach The pillow should be relatively flat or the head should rest directly on the mattress. In this position, it is often best to place another relatively flat pillow under the stomach to help the spine keep its natural alignment. 32

Power Bank What is a Power Bank and How to Choose it? Power Banks are high capacity batteries that can be connected to smartphones, tablets and many other devices, to charge them. The main advantages of Power Banks are their compatibility with any device and they have more compact dimensions and improved capacity, that make it possible to charge one or more different devices. For example, there are small sized Power Banks that can recharge a smartphone up to ten times. How it Works Most of the Power Banks available on the market have one or more USB ports, that allow to connect a USB cable with micro USB, Type-C or Lightning ending, for charging a wide range of devices, such as tablets, iPhones, iPads and many more. Its compatibility makes the Power Bank an essential tool. In other words, a Power Bank gives an extra charge that can be used whenever there is no possibility to connect to the grid. Recharging Time Duration changes depending on the capacity and on the micro USB input socket. On an average, a small or medium sized Power Bank needs 2 to 4 hours to perform a complete recharging. On the other hand, a large sized Power Bank may require 8 to 20 hours. In order to decrease the charging time, some manufacturers have added an additional input micro USB port, or a micro USB and a Lightning port. This way, the 100% charge can be reached in half the time. How to Choose a Power Bank Firstly, it is necessary to know the features of the battery and of the charger of the specific device. This information can be found on the battery and on the charger, itself. 1. Once you know the battery’s capacity, in order to obtain at least one full charge, you need to buy a Power Bank having the same capacity increased by 30%. This is due to the fact that the cells of this kind of batteries operate 3,7 V, while standard devices require about 5 V for charging, which at the end of the process will be converted according to the parameters of the batteries. During this ‘transformation’, there is a loss of about the 30% of energy, depending on the efficiency of the circuits that allow this operation. 2. The output voltage from the Power Bank must be the same as the charger’s voltage, or a little bit higher. 3. Choose the Power Bank with single or multiple ports depending on the number of devices to be recharged. Usually, those with multiple ports have a greater capacity and a greater amperage (allowing a faster charging). 4. For safety reasons, it is advisable to choose a Power Bank with protection against overvoltage. This of course may affect the price. 5. At the same time, a Power Bank should have a circuit aimed at stopping the charging once the battery is fully charged, to avoid damages and to make it last longer. 6. Choose branded products. You may find good deals in shops or online. Avoid buying cheap items, as saving some Euros may lead to damage your expensive device. New Cars in 2018 Alfa Romeo Executive Saloon Following the launch of the well-received Alfa Romeo Giulia, a larger saloon car will arrive to take on the BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes E-Class. It'll be based on a stretched version of the Giulia’s underpinnings and is expected to include a plug-in hybrid version and Alfa Romeo’s first-ever six-cylinder diesel. It’s also likely the bombastic 503bhp V6 from the Giulia Quadrifoglio could be fitted to give Alfa Romeo a rival to the BMW M5.

Alfa Romeo Large SUV Alfa Romeo has only just launched the Stelvio SUV, but a larger model is already expected in 2018. It’s most likely this would be based on the Maserati Levante, giving it access to 3.0-litre V6 engines and expanding Alfa’s previously non-existent SUV line-up. Alfa Romeo’s boss has already said he recognised ‘where consumer preference is going’ and the greater profitability SUVs provide.

Audi A1 The second generation Audi A1 is in line for a 2018 launch, with subtly tweaked styling, an improved interior and a wider range of technology expected. It’ll be new under the metal and will have a longer wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels), so there’ll be more space in the rear seats and boot. The engine range will include a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol and 1.5-litre petrol and diesel.

Red Velvet Cake Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a red velvet cake, right? A simple recipe to make your Valentine’s Day extra special! INGREDIENTS (Serves 12) Cake: 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour 1 ½ cups sugar 2 tablespoons unsweetened baking cocoa 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 ½ cups vegetable oil 1 cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 bottle (1 oz) red food colour 2 eggs Frosting: ½ cup all-purpose flour 1 ½ cups milk 1 ½ cups sugar 1 ½ cups butter, softened 1 tablespoon vanilla METHOD Heat oven to 180°C. Grease bottoms and sides of 3 (8 or 9-inch) round pans with shortening; lightly flour. In a large bowl, beat all cake ingredients with electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat 2 minutes on medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally and after pour into pans. Bake 25 to 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour. In medium saucepan, mix ½ cup flour and 1 ½ cups milk with whisk until smooth. Cook over medium heat until mixture is very thick, stirring constantly. Then remove from the heat; cool for 10 minutes. In a large bowl, beat 1 ½ cups of sugar and the butter with an electric mixer on a medium speed until light and fluffy. Gradually add the flour mixture in tablespoonfuls; beat on high speed until smooth. Beat in the vanilla. Fill and frost the cake, using 1 cup of frosting between the layers. The Littlest Room Yes, we all know which room I’m referring to! The cloakroom, the downstairs loo, the bog, the ‘bathroom’ (if you’re American), or Yer Tiz if you’re Cornish (only joking). Some cloakrooms in Cyprus houses are ‘littler’ than others. Nosing around a new build a while back, we found one where a gentleman would have had difficulty using it standing up! However, even in larger houses it can still be the littlest room, under the stairs, usually deep and rather narrow and usually the last room to be given any design thought. However, considering it’s a room which is used a lot and most importantly used by guests, is it time to give it an once-over? For practical plumbing purposes, the WC is usually at the back, and worst scenario, there’s a tiny basin at the side with the main room light over it, and a door you have to get round before you can close it. Now, assuming you’re going for a full revamp, both tiles and lighting will play a huge part in the new look. Whether you decide on a dark and dramatic look, or a white and bright setting, installing downlighters in a false ceiling will immediately change the ambience of the room for the better. A 2-piece WC in a narrow room is very difficult to clean, so next up is to replace it with a wall or floor mounted WC with a concealed cistern in a false wall. The wall can be full height, or just the height allowed by the cistern, perhaps with shelving or a cabinet over. This scenario also allows you to carry out a partial revamp as there’s no need to disturb the existing tiling. You can tile the new wall with complementary tiles or shimmer mosaics! Or simply paint it. As it’s the first thing you see when you open the door, you can be adventurous if you want! Admittedly cloakroom basins do have to be small, but if it’s too close to the door, now would be the time to move it a few centimetres, if possible. On the other hand, I’ve seen tiny basins in cloakrooms that are as big as some people’s bathrooms and are only there because someone ordered a ‘cloakroom’ basin! However, if available space only allows you to have a small basin, buy one with curved edges; so much better than square in small spaces. Alternatively, your small pedestal basin can be brought right up to date by wall-hanging the basin, replacing the plastic trap with a chrome bottle trap and adding a stylish new tap. Et voila! Depending on your tastes and preferences, you now have a knock-your-eyes-out super loo to impress your guests or a laid-back quiet place for meditation, rumination, reading or whatever. Valentine’s Day

Children’s Compost Corner - How Bees See Flowers

February the 14th is known all over the world to be Valentine’s Day and in the UK, it is traditional to give 12 red roses as a token of love but if you dig a little deeper some of its origins are of a particular different nature, yet somehow the day has been morphed into a celebration of love. In Spain, they have two days dedicated to love, in France, considered to be the most romantic place on the Earth, years ago custom called for all single people of the neighbourhood to have a lottery of love; they would call out the name of a hopeful partner, if the calls were not answered, the rejected would gather around huge bonfires and burn the images of their wannabe Valentine. These bonfires were known as ‘turn for the worst’. In Wales, they would send love spoons and this tradition dates back to the 17th century. In Denmark, they exchange pressed snow drops, in China they exchange carved melons. In the Philippine’s one tradition has swept the country leading to couples sharing their wedding days and the Italians celebrate by having a romantic meal.

Like humans, bees can see different colours, which has been recognised for hundreds of years but unlike humans, bees can see ultraviolet light. Patterns that appear on flowers can only be seen with ultraviolet light. These patterns are sometimes known as honey guides or nectar guides. It was thought that it was the bright colours of the flowers that attracted the bees but seen under ultraviolet light the flowers look very different showing the bees where to find the nectar and in return pollinate the next generation of flowers. The bees can also detect a flower’s electric field. Buzzing helps shake the pollen loose which then becomes stuck to the bee’s body and is then transported to the next flower by the bee in search of more nectar. The bees help the flowers and the flowers help the bees, the flowers get pollinated and the bees get a lovely drink of syrupy nectar.

SALES - RENTALS - DEEDS - MORTGAGES - LEGALITY - ADVICE

Cyprus Property Sales 2017 At the time of writing, the final statistics for 2017 had just been published and these confirmed that 2017 was a fantastic year for the property market in Cyprus. Sales increased countywide by a tremendous 24% year on year. It was the best year for sales since the end of the boom in 2008. There were a total of 8,734 transactions during 2017, up from 7,063 in 2016. December was a particularly impressive month with a total of 1,537 contracts for the sale of property versus 1,134 twelve months ago, an increase of 36%. This is partly explained by the imposition, from January 1st, of V.A.T. on land sales – this, of course, created an urgency to complete on land sales before the deadline, to save money. Regional Sales The Famagusta region fared very well this year with total sales increasing to 628 (with 169 cases, or 27%, completing in December!) recording an increase of 44% over 2016. Sales to foreign buyers increased by 3% from 25% to 28% of the total.

Larnaca suffered a slight drop year on year, the only region of the Island to do so. In total there were 20 less sales than during 2016 although November and December both recorded overall increases. Sales to foreign purchasers increased from 24% of the total to 28%.

2018 has started very well, so let us work together for further growth this year! Thanks to Island Homes for contributing this article. To find out more about island Homes call: (+357) 23 811870. LAW - FINANCES - YOUR RIGHTS - INVESTMENTS - ADVICE - GUIDANCE

Wills and Succession Law in Cyprus - Part 1 Which statutes regulate Wills and Succession in Cyprus? Three different statutes govern the law in regards to Wills and Succession in Cyprus. 1. The Wills and Succession Law (Cap 195) which governs the law in relation to wills and succession in Cyprus. 2. The Administration of Estates Law (Cap 189) which governs the procedure which is to be followed in executing a will and the administration of the estate of deceased persons. 3. The Probates (Re-sealing law) Law (Cap 192) which applies to individuals who have passed away in the United Kingdom or in another Commonwealth country and who had property in Cyprus at the time of their death. In particular, this statute provides the procedure that must be followed in order to re-seal in the Cyprus Courts the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration from another Commonwealth country. What is a Will? A will is a formal written legal statement setting out the way in which a person’s property is to be distributed following his/her death. The testator must be of sound mind and be over 18 years old in order to have the legal capacity to make a will. The testator’s mental health should not be affected by advanced age or other reasons. Moreover, it is important for the testator to understand the full meaning of the legal document he/she signs and its effects, that is to understand the rights derived from the document. Moreover, an individual who wishes to draw up a will must be aware of the fact that there are certain formalities which must be complied with regard to witnesses, signatures etc. in order for the will to be valid. How is a Will revoked? 1. There are several ways to revoke a will: 2. By drafting a subsequent will in which there is a statement that the new will revokes the previous will. 3. By drafting a subsequent will which revokes only part of the previous will that is not agreeable (compatible) with the previous will. 4. The testator willingly tears, burns or destroys the will or the will is destroyed by another individual who follows instructions of the testator. 5. In case the testator gets married or he/she has children after the execution of the will, the aforementioned is considered to be revoked, unless there is a provision in the content of the will in which it could be implied that the testator drew up his/her will considering the possibility of a marriage or a child. 6. In case the testator had started procedures of getting a divorce, the will is considered to be revoked unless he/she re-executed or reviewed the will. 48

Will limitations – Disposable and statutory portion There are restrictions on the testator in sharing his/her estate. According to Cyprus law, the testator cannot distribute the whole estate entirely in accordance with his/her wish as a certain portion of the deceased’s property must be reserved for close relatives who are alive at the time of the testator’s death and that portion cannot be disposed of by the testator’s will. This portion which Section 41 of the Wills and Succession Law, Cap 195 sets aside is called the “statutory portion” and it seems that it is provided by the Cyprus law for the protection of the family. Inversely, the remaining amount after the subtraction of the statutory portion is called the “disposal portion” and can be disposed of as the testator wishes. Thus, the disposable portion can be determined according to the surviving relatives at the time of his/her death. It is worth mentioning that prior to July 2015 there was an exemption for British citizens or citizens of most of the Commonwealth countries with regard to the compulsory portion, as they were entitled to distribute all their estate by will. However, the forced statutory portion now applies to any individual who dies while domiciled in Cyprus or he/she had immovable property in Cyprus. It could be said that the law protects the close relatives; nevertheless it could be argued that it may lead to undesirable outcomes in cases where the deceased did not have good relationships with the surviving relatives. However, there are other ways that an individual can distribute his property according to his/her wishes, for instance through trusts or gifts during his/her lifetime. Being a Parent - Part 2 Being a parent changes everything. But being a parent also changes with each baby. Here are some of the ways having a second and third child is different from having your first. Worries 1st baby: At the first sign of distress, a whimper or a frown, you pick up the baby. 2nd baby: You pick the baby up when her screams threaten to wake your firstborn. 3rd baby: You teach your 3-year-old how to rewind the mechanical swing. Nappies 1st baby: You change your baby's nappies every hour, whether they need it or not. 2nd baby: You change their nappy every 2 to 3 hours, if needed. 3rd baby: You try to change their nappy before others start to complain about the smell or you see it sagging to their knees. Swallowing Coins 1st child: When your first child swallows a coin, you rush the child to the hospital and demand x-rays. 2nd child: When your 2nd child swallows a coin, you carefully watch for the coin to pass. 3rd child: When your 3rd child swallows a coin you deduct it from his allowance! Baby's Name 1st baby: You pore over baby-name books and practice pronouncing and writing combinations of all your favourites. 2nd baby: Someone has to name their kid after your great-aunt Mavis, right? It might as well be you. 3rd baby: You open a name book, close your eyes and see where your finger falls. Mavis? Perfect! Feeding 1st baby: Dropped food goes in the bin. 2nd baby: You implement the 5 second rule. 3rd baby: If it's non-dairy and not stuck to the floor it's fair game. Baby Cot 1st baby: The cot is outfitted with perfectly coordinated sheets and accessories to match the rest of the nursery. 2nd baby: The stained sheets and comforter have been replaced with second hand ones from friends who did not have babies with reflux. 3rd baby: Baby cot? Too much work to get up throughout the night. Baby sleeps in bed with you until old enough to move into the bottom bunk of sibling's bunk bed!

Baby Activities 1st baby: You take your infant to Baby Gymnastics, Baby Swing and Baby Story Hour. 2nd baby: You take your infant to Baby Gymnastics. 3rd baby: You take your infant to the supermarket and the dry cleaner.

Pet of the Month

Dear Gina, I have recently moved from England to Cyprus and I am permanently staying in a house in Avgorou village. I brought my 8-year-old cross shepherd dog Bella with me from the UK. My problem is that she is not settling very well. She won’t stay outside in the garden at all, she is anxious when I take her out for walks and she cries when she hears sounds. Basically, it’s like she’s a different dog. What has happened to her since we’ve moved Gina? Is there something I can do for her? Brian C.

This month we are featuring Dottie, a small terrier cross with a soft short haired coat which is a light tan colour with white markings. Dottie was found abandoned and came to the Argos sanctuary in September 2017. Very quickly it became clear that Dottie was expecting a littler of pups and thankfully she safely delivered 7 puppies in December 2017. Dottie has been an exceptional mother to the puppies and we believe she now deserves a chance to have her own forever home with some peace after nurturing and bringing up seven puppies.

Dear Brian, Welcome to Cyprus. Moving to a different country is always stressful for any dog. Different sounds, different smells and different surroundings. Especially if you’ve moved to an open country like Cyprus and it’s twice as frightening in an area like Avgorou village, where loud sounds are heard clearly, due to the fact that there is no traffic and there are many fields for hunting available. These new noises might not sound so loud to you but dogs hear a frequency range of 40 to 60,000 Hz, while a human range is between 20 and 20,000 Hz. It is because of this that dogs have a difficult time with very loud noises, especially noises that are new to them. Most dogs get used to it but in cases that this does not happen, there is a treatment with tablets. Don’t worry she won’t be on them forever only for a couple of months. They have the effect of calming a dog’s mind and body, while your pet goes about her usual routine. These capsules have been known to calm a dog that was frightened of gun shots and after 2 months the dog went hunting with their owner. They are prescribed for fear of loud noises, anxiety caused by changes in environment such as a new home, car or airplane travel and staying at kennels, barking and also for separation anxiety. These capsules as well as other ingredients contain a unique blend of amino acids and B Vitamins, that aid relaxation while your dog carries on with her daily routine without any side effects. They can be purchased at your local veterinary clinic. Don’t worry all will be well and Bella will be back to normal soon. Dottie by name and Dottie by nature, is great with people and other dogs but cats are not her favourite. Dottie is a sociable and very happy one year old dog, with a delicate build and is not too big. As Dottie is a bouncy dog we would recommend an active home for this little girl. She just needs someone to open their heart and home to her. Dottie can be seen at Argos Animal Sanctuary, Ormideia, which is open 7 days a week from 11:00am until 3:30pm. Or you can telephone Julia on 99599240 for any additional information about Dottie or if you want to adopt a dog or cat. More dogs and cats looking for homes are shown on the Argos webpage www.argossanctuary.com and our Facebook page Argos Animal Sanctuary.
