Hello Everyone and welcome to your February edition of Daxi. It's been a very cold, wet time over the past few weeks so it’s been nice to see the Cyprus sunshine over the past few days. As I write this Editorial we are only days away from what I have been reliably informed is the the biggest event of it's kind in Cyprus, The Eastern Cyprus Daxi Business Awards. I for one am getting very excited about the event and all the recognition and reward it brings to businesses, charities and individuals in our community. If you have not yet got your tickets, there are just a few days left before ticket sales close. With an estimated 700 people attending including over 120 businesses and an array of officials including all local Mayors and The British High Commissioner you really don't want to miss out as anybody who is anybody from business owners, to officials to the general public will be there! I look forward to seeing you all in your 'glad rags' on the night! Until next month

Photo Competition Each month we will choose the best photograph taken in Cyprus to appear on the front cover of Daxi Magazine, with full accreditation to the photographer. By sending your photographs in you are giving permission for your photograph to be used anywhere within the magazine in any future issue with full accreditation to yourself. SSAFA Walkabout On Saturday 3rd December, an intrepid group of people met at The Corfu Taverna to take part in a sponsored walk to raise funds for SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) - Cyprus Branch. More than 20 people walked 3.5 miles around Oroklini to raise much-needed funds for this worthy cause. There was also a grand raffle, many great prizes were on show and altogether £844.10 was raised for that part alone. When the walkers returned, a welcome brunch was available for them which was heartily enjoyed by all. In all, a grand total of £786 was raised for the walk. A wonderful result and everybody agreed that it had been an excellent fundraiser. There have been further donations amounting to £95, making a total of £1725.10 raised on the day. For more details on SSAFA, please contact: SSAFA Cyprus Branch on 25963647. Helen Barrett, Larnaca Community Writer

Not a “Silent Night”! Who doesn’t love a Carol Concert? It is one of the most anticipated and important parts of Christmas to most people and this year Oroklini proudly presented its own event. On 3rd December, Oroklini’s new Community Choir made its debut at the Carol Concert in the Council Offices. Under the leadership of Claire Saul, the mixed choir sang a wonderful repertoire of Carols and Christmas songs to a large audience. As well as the Choir, there was a solo performance from Hannah Bailey who played the piano beautifully. There were dance performances from the students of the Nea Genia Dance School (Oroklini) and the children from the Digenis Oroklini Dancing Group, who charmed the audience with their traditional folk dances and modern contemporary pieces. In the second half ‘MACS Harmony’ (Mick Allgood on saxophone and Claire Saul on flute) entertained us with three wonderful Christmas songs. During the interval was a grand raffle with lots of great prizes available. All proceeds from the evening went to The Blind School in Nicosia and to the new choir. From their enthusiastic reaction, the audience were very happy with their first Carol Concert from the Oroklini Community Choir and the feedback received on the night was that people are looking forward to the next musical event. If you would like to join the Oroklini Community Choir – please phone Claire Saul on 99 935637. Details also on ‘What’s On’ page in this magazine and on their Facebook page. ‘Payback’ Packs a Punch! The launch of a new book is always an exciting event, so I went along to the House of Letters and Arts on December 19th. I was looking forward to this event and I was not disappointed! This book ‘Payback’ is written by not one author, but a whole group. Just before the financial crash here in Cyprus in 2013, a writing group was formed under the leadership of author Eve Makis and it was decided that it would be interesting to write a fictional account of the crisis. The group called themselves Alex Zenon (after Larnaca itself) because they all met and worked in Larnaca and have a close affinity with the city. Much of the action in the book takes place around St. Lazarus and its environs. On the book’s launch night, there was an introduction by Erini Loucaides (Author of ‘Soar on Raw’), followed by Eve Makis who spoke about the idea behind the book and how it was written and put together by using the strengths of each writer. Each of the authors spoke about their part in writing and editing the book - Zoe Piponides, Paula Gannon Savvides, Chris Demetriou and Harry Alexiou (who unfortunately could not attend the Book Launch). There was a good response from the audience and each of the authors signed the book for those who bought a copy. At present, it is not decided whether the group will work together to write another book, or go on writing individually.

FAMAGUSTA REGION L o c a l - C o m m u n i t y - N e w s - E v e n t s - P e o p l e Ammochostos Carnival 2017 The much loved Ammochostos Carnival returns for another year, refreshed with many surprises! The Carnival is a great popular celebration that although the origins are lost in antiquity, our people preserve and honour them today. The Carnival is regularly celebrated in our city and throughout Cyprus. It welcomes a celebration for the eve of Spring and it provides the opportunity for people to express their faith and optimism for a good year. The Paralimni Municipality organises the events in open access areas, with free admission and participation. The event brings all people together, young and old, regardless of economic ability and social background. The program is as follows: • Thursday 16th February: “Tsiknopempti” (which means, Thursday of the Smoke of Grilled Meat). The event will be held in the main square in Paralimni. There will be plenty of food, drink and music! The King of the Carnival will arrive, escorted by the Town Crier. Following this his Coronation will take place which signals the official start of the Carnival. The Feast is celebrated with music and dance performances! Tsiknopempti is the Thursday of the week of Kreatini (which means the Week of Meat), during which large amounts of meat are traditionally consumed prior to the arrival of Lent, the fasting season leading up to Easter. In the Greek Orthodox tradition, fasting on Wednesday and Friday is important, therefore Thursday is the best day for Tsiknopempti. Tsiknopempti is celebrated 11 days before Clean Monday (Green Monday). • Saturday 18th February: The Carnival party begins and is full of fun and revelry, with a selection of DJ’s to create the Carnival mood, spirit and surprises! • Saturday 25th February: Come along to a night of craziness and madness. Watch people pour into the street at our famous night parade. The outdoor party is held at the main square in Paralimni, with DJ’s and drinks. • Sunday 26th February: The Grand Carnival Parade is held in the main streets of the City, with an inviting feast. The Carnival starts at the Second Elementary School, runs through the streets of Paralimni, ending at the Main Square.

Alterations & transformations are possible & even probable on the 5th, & though you can be resistant to change at times, you're more than ready for these. One of your best qualities is keeping an open mind, so transitions & new concepts shouldn't be hard. You have to be very vigilant on the 13th, especially where business or money is involved. The details matter, so read every word of a contract before you put your signature on the dotted line.

There's an air of finality that you're stressing about on the 3rd, but don't panic until you know the details. You have a tendency to overact before you know the facts, Pisces, so just stay calm & ask as many questions as you need to make yourself feel comfortable & less panicky. Romance, love & pleasure are all part of your dreamy world on the 8th & it's hard to see other people's flaws when you're in this good of a mood.

What's your main goal in life? The 3rd is the perfect day to explore options. Think big & disregard people who tell you there are too many limitations. You don't get the reactions you expect when you announce good news but that's okay at least now you know who your friends are. Destiny plays a big role in your daily life on the 27th, so there really are no wrong moves. Just do what you do & good things will happen.

Honour and respect are top on your priority list on the 15th & if you aren't treated the way you feel you deserve to be treated, your feathers get ruffled. Have you done anything extraordinary that you feel the world should take note of? If not, wait your turn for the applause. It will come in time. You feel a deep dose of protectiveness for someone on the 20th & you take your duties as a rescuer very seriously.

Who's the smartest person you know (besides yourself)? Find them & pick their brain on the 1st. When you need answers, two heads are better than one. If you start to feel too claustrophobic on the 7th, you'll definitely get that urge to flee. There are ups & downs to both staying & running away, what will you decide to do? You have a great time being social on the 14th, so put yourself out there and let your hair down!

What's the rush, Cancer? You don't have to do everything in a hurry on the 3rd. It's obvious that you want to win, but coming in second isn't the end of the world! Or is it? You make a great host on the 9th and you have to have everything in its place, which also makes you a great organiser. Fairness & balance are foremost on your mind on the 16th, & you don't like it when anyone close to you tries to get away with anything.

You have fun learning new magic tricks on the 8th but the secret to one of them may elude you. You can't stand not knowing but what other option do you have? The world finally recognises your brilliance on the 11th, so will you be ready for your 15 minutes of fame? You're so comfortable standing on the red carpet that people might mistake you for an actual celebrity. If you look the part, why not play it?

Being too critical of others is pretty much a waste of time on the 3rd, so instead of telling them what you don't like, why not focus on the stuff you think is working? You win a lot more friends with a positive attitude than a negative one. You love to restore order on the 13th, especially a messy drawer in your house or a cabinet at work. It might not technically be your job, but you love to be helpful.

What would it hurt to compromise on the 1st? You might not get everything that you want but sometimes getting something is better than nothing. You don't feel like doing a whole lot on the 11th, so procrastination can feel like your best friend. Here's the thing though Libra, what you put off today will only be waiting for you tomorrow. If you can live with that, then fine but just keep in mind that your problems aren't going anywhere.

You feel like you're constantly being tested on the 8th but the good news is that you're about to pass every test. You're one of the few signs who dig in and get going. Your directness is appreciated on the 15th & although honesty is almost always the best policy, you don't have to be overly blunt. People will pick up on your subtlety, so use it often. Change isn't your favourite thing on the 26th but you're willing to make adjustments for a friend.

You have a great time chatting it up with both friends and strangers alike on the 2nd. Your openness & ability to break the ice, make you one of the most popular people in your immediate vicinity & beyond. There's so much to see and explore, so why are you sitting home feeling sorry for yourself? Remember your plan of world dominance? What happened to that?! You believe in yourself and your abilities on the 23rd & 24th.

Keep your eye out for discounts and markdowns on the 5th because you should have the chance to get some really good deals. You can't plan for it, but being in the right place at the right time helps your cause immensely. You keep your material possessions close to you on the 11th, almost like you think someone is going to steal your stuff. Yes, you can't be too careful but don't make your friends think you don't trust them. 17

Friendship One of the most valued assets within our lives apart from our family, is our friends. The family that we can choose for ourselves. Throughout the years we build up an array of personalities that contribute to our memories, our milestones and our journey. To be there for a friend when they are sad, worried, unwell or lonely can be difficult for us to witness their struggle. We can feel helpless because we cannot dissolve the issue by a simple hug, a few kind words, or just a natural approach by asking “Are you ok?”. It’s amazing how those 3 words reach out and can overwhelm your friend with a feeling of safety, reassurance, love and support. Anyone who has been feeling a little lost will feel more comfortable being open and being able to share their problems with someone who can relate to their situation, or someone who will just calmly sit and listen. Living in Cyprus and being separated with our families by distance, I believe the friendships we build here becomes our foundation of a new support network both emotionally and professionally. We all miss certain family members, I think this is the most difficult obstacle to overcome, however being surrounded by those who understand and can offer some comfort is most welcoming. Feeling lonely is difficult enough but being unwell and feeling alone is even more isolating. This is where a good friend can make all of the difference by sending a simple message, a phone call or a knock on the door. Especially during the next couple of months when life is being lived more indoors, a few words can be just the tonic that can lift that special someone and bring a much needed smile back to them. There are the good times, the fun and laughter that are enhanced by those we choose to spend our socialising and celebrations with. These moments are what remind us of how lucky we are to have such special friends and who we freely invest our energy into by making such happy memories with. We feel a sense of belonging with having a place within each other’s life by choice.

It’s important to appreciate what is really important. Sometimes life distracts us and we forget to appreciate who, and not what, enriches our life. When in Doubt - Wear Black and Accessorise!

Accessorising is a fashion and mood statement for some of us, tradition and passion for others. However, you can make a long forgotten outfit look completely different with the right accessories. It can also change an outfit from casual to smart. Accessories can be anything from bags, gloves, scarves and sunglasses, to hats, jewellery, belts and shoes. During 2016, we saw trends that took us back to the 70’s and even the 60’s, while the look for 2017 is going to be a strong reflection of the 80’s and 90’s.

The most important fashion statement for 2017 is colour - very strong and bright! Experimenting with colours can be fascinating and very varied, starting with makeup and nail polish, to shoes and scarves. Just make sure that your colours match and you don’t end up looking like a rainbow! With regards to jewellery, 2017 promises to give us the option to wear many layers of chains, or heavy one piece necklaces. After 4 years, the famous chocker has finally gone! This year we can enjoy the so called ‘unfinished’ or ‘half jewellery’ pieces. Also coming back from the 80’s and 90’s is the ‘one earing’ fashion which can be as big as you like, for formal or informal events. I’m personally happy to announce that my favourite gem stone, the pearl, is back in any form of jewellery, colour and for any occasion. Shoes trends for 2017 are predicted to become more colourful and classier than previous years. What do I mean by that? This year men can try different colours such as burgundy, blue, brown and even white, but the style is something from the good old times of Frank Sinatra and Clark Gable. For the ladies, any colour is acceptable. The sharp pointed shoes are still very much in fashion, but the good news is that the heel is going to be much thicker and lower. So ladies, we can now join in with the latest trends and be able to walk properly too! For somebody who prefers a flat platform, the famous Oxford shoes and sandals are back again in every colour including silver and gold! Accessorise with scarfs in a variation of shapes, textures and length. Loose wrap knitted scarves, mini neckerchiefs, furry scarves, stoles, swinging tails and bow-knot scarves should find a spot in your wardrobe for every season this year. Last but not least, we all love belts and bags. These are some of the most important accessories for any time of the year. So what has 2017 got to offer? In the last couple of years, belts for men were not a necessity but they are a must for this seasons fashion. As for ladies, belts are considered to be the new trend and the bigger the better! Wide leather belts, golden metallic belts, animal skin belts and even corset belts for formal events and everyday use. It has been predicted that bags are to get smaller and you can choose from a variety of colours, shapes and prints. Have fun with the new trends that are available, be daring and try something new, even create a new look for yourself. Written by Elena Leontiou

Putting A New ‘Spin’ on Valentines With the start of the New Year behind us now, it’s time to start looking forward to the next important date on our calendars, Valentine’s Day! Being a true romantic I love this day as it is a great excuse to spread a little joy and a little love around. This day is the ideal time for handmade cards and gifts that show someone how much they are thought of. The kids enjoy this time of year too as they follow in my footsteps and enjoy getting creative and making cards for their favourite friends. This year I wanted to make a card that was a little different, so we decided to make hanging cards that put a little spin on things. What you will need: • Red paper or card • White paper or card • A pencil and/or pen

• Scissors • A glue stick • Some twine or ribbon

Instructions: Step 1 - You will need to cut out 4 hearts of the same size from your red paper. We used a stencil to ensure that they were all exactly the same. Step 2 - Using a slightly smaller heart stencil than you used for your red hearts, cut out 2 hearts from your white paper. Step 3 - Stick these white hearts into the centre of two of your red hearts. These are for writing your valentines messages on. We chose to write “Be Mine” on one and the recipient on the other. Step 4 - Fold all of your hearts in half ensuring that you make a firm crease down the middle of each one. Step 5 - Using your glue, stick all of your folded hearts together one at a time (see pictures). Step 6 - Use your pencil or a hole punch to put a hole in the top of your hearts and thread with a piece of twine for hanging. I really like how these turned out. In fact, I like them so much that I have decided to make a few of these hearts in various sizes so that I can make a special Valentines mobile to hang outside. You will be able to see pictures of the finished mobile on my Facebook page if you would like to know how it turned out. Enjoy spreading the love this month and I hope you have a great Valentine’s day! Written by Sam Barnes. Sam Barnes is primarily a stay at home mum of two, who has loved crafting for many years. REVIEWS - MUSIC - BOOKS - FILMS - OPINIONS

Sherlock The breath taking, mysterious and unsolvable crimes were always an inspiration for the creation of a large number of fiction masterpieces. Whether cinematic projections or ink written novels, detectives are always in fashion. Sherlock is one of the best crime TV series and has returned to our screens with a 4th season in 2017, after a three-year break. Sherlock is one of the greatest representations of the isolated human genius, which is capable in limiting the infinite number of realities into a narrowed truth. Each episode leads to the discovery and solution of different crimes that are connected in a spectacular way. Other than the logical complexity of the events, the episodes are enhanced with the sincerest human feelings such as loyalty, love, compassion, revenge and betrayal. The friendship between Sherlock and John Watson is one of the most interesting relationships in the story. John is an ex-military, who has served in Afghanistan. While going through his toughest times, Sherlock offers him his friendship. What is most incredibly surprising is that the two characters complete each other. They have all this passion about solving and fixing the broken parts of the world but simultaneously they hardly try to see through each other’s hidden miseries. Critical reception has been highly positive with many reviews praising the quality of the writing, performances, and direction. Sherlock has been nominated for numerous awards including: BAFTAs, Emmys, and a Golden Globe, winning several awards across a variety of categories. The show won in three categories at the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special for Moffat, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for Cumberbatch, and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for Freeman. Two years later, it won Outstanding Television Movie. In addition, the show was also honoured with a Peabody Award in 2011. The third series has become the UK's most watched drama series since 2001. Sherlock has been sold to 180 territories. It is certainly a show worth watching!

“I’m not a psychopath, Anderson. I’m a high-functioning sociopath. Do your research.”- Sherlock “Listen, what I said before John, I meant it. I don’t have friends; I’ve just got one.”- Sherlock

John Watson: Holmes, wait. What if the murderer is inside? Sherlock Holmes: Then I shall introduce myself to him. John Watson: What have I gotten myself into? Sherlock Holmes: The adventure of a lifetime, Watson. 32

Website or Facebook Page? I would like to start with a sentence that I read some time ago: “A website makes sense if its content does”. Sometimes, when I offer my service of website development, I am told “We are not interested, we already have our Facebook page”. So let’s see the main differences between these two solutions.

Graphic Design

Website A website can be customised choosing colours, configurations, layout etc. Beyond the aesthetic impact, it must lead the visitor to an action, such as for example - filling in a contact form. Facebook The graphic design of a FB page is ‘static’. Out of curiosity, I had a look at the pages of McDonalds, BMW, Ferrari, Renault, Alfa Romeo and Shimano Fishing. If you have a look at them too, you will see that even though they are international brands, the graphics are of necessity, all the same! In fact FB does not allow a customisation.

Postioning In The Search Engines (Google)

Website It can be optimised in its contents and structure. Under a specific procedure, there’s a way to make a website appear among the first results of a search by means of different keywords. It’s not easy but it can be done. Facebook On FB little can be done, except optimising the url (once 25 followers have been reached), writing interesting posts and adding nice pictures. For example, if you start a search in an engine with keywords “restaurant in Larnaca”, you will get a list of major international portals, such as Tripadvisor and other websites but barely a FB page!

Functionalities / Management

Website A professional and dynamic website allows you to reach your target; e-commerce, photo gallery, discussion forum, customised functionalities, etc. There’s no limit! Later on it will also be possible to add pages, forms, texts, videos, etc. Facebook On FB the situation is quite different. You can add posts, events, pictures, videos and surveys but you cannot go any further, except for adding a third-party application. Its potentialities are less compared to those of a website!

Accessibility / Usability

Website If properly developed, the website is accessible from any kind of device without any limitation. The visitor can find what he is looking for more easily. The page ‘find us’ or ‘contact’ can be integrated with Google Maps, etc. Facebook Firstly, let me point out that NOT everybody uses or wishes to use FB. Many people in fact have an aversion to social networks. Therefore, by using a FB page instead of a website you could lose a potential market share. Moreover, FB does not allow all of the page’s contents to be shown if one hasn’t an account or isn’t logged in. Concerning usability, FB is set to show all the posts in chronological order and this means that it is not possible to divide them into topics, as well as being impossibile to create, for example, a product catalogue.

Property Rights

Website Generally speaking, a website is ‘yours’. You own the rights to it and both you and your visitors will never be denied access if they do not register! You just need to remember to renew the hosting service and your domain. Facebook A FB page is not ‘yours’. It belongs to Facebook! If for any reason they decide to close it or should they ask for a fee, you cannot oppose. You can try to contact the Help Center but that’s almost impossible! Conclusions Can a Facebook page replace a business website? In my opinion - absolutely not! A Facebook page is useful but it must be linked / matched to a website, working in synergy for increasing your own ‘brand identity’.

2016 - A Notable Year For All The Wrong Reasons On New Year's Eve in Oldham, England two young girls were killed crossing a road by a driver who did not stop at the scene. He has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. He has also been charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, driving without a licence, failing to stop after a collision and failing to report the collision. Three other men travelling in the car have been charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. As no application for bail has been made all four were remanded into custody until February 1st for a pre-trial preparation hearing. There have been too many occasions where innocent victims have died as a result of offending drivers who have been given light sentences or let off with a fine and short driving ban. The whole country will expect to see this change in line with the severity of this crime. Such a waste of two young lives that was nothing short of murder. Here in Cyprus 2016, there were 46 fatalities involved in road traffic accidents. This is 11 fewer than 2015. In my August article, I covered the statistics and the main risk factors. Cyprus has an EU target of 30 fatalities which is a 50% reduction by 2020. In my opinion, Cyprus will not meet that target and also all the injuries, with some being life changing, is nothing to be proud of. I stated back in August that fatalities can be reduced to zero. Any loss of life on the roads should not be regarded as acceptable. The Police need to be proactive in prosecuting anyone who is breaking the law, especially with regard to the main risk factors which are speed, drink driving, helmets, seat belts and child restraints. In addition to that, there is the widespread use of mobile phones while driving which appears to be acceptable in Cyprus. Unfortunately, the standard of driving is poor and it's easy to see why so many are killed on the island's roads. Trying to educate the public with regard to road safety in my opinion won't work but hitting them hard with fines and bans would however be more effective. Those of us that drive to a high standard and remain within the law only have to concentrate more on avoiding collisions with those that don't. I have made reference to this many times. It is known as defensive driving. There are many examples shown on the internet, take the time to learn these skills, they could save not just your life but also your passengers and other road users. I made the observation a long time ago that the Police favour the use of speed guns in the same old locations such as the highway (motorway) and dual carriageways. This has very little to do with road safety and is more of a cash generator. A vehicle travelling at ten or twenty kilometres over the limit in itself is unlikely to be a real danger. However, in the densely populated areas there is a real threat to life and limb. These are the areas that need regular Police speed checks. As a reminder, the speed limits in Cyprus are; 100 kph for the Highway (motorway) with a minimum of 65 kph, built up areas are 50 kph, country roads are 65 kph, hazards (road works and bends, speed humps etc) are 30 kph. The national speed limit is 80 kph. You will need to be observant with the speed limit signs as unlike the UK they are not repeated. I make no apologies for the serious content of this article as I am committed to promoting road safety. Written by Graham and Jenny Inch

THE LATEST SPORTS AND EVENTS NEWS

LOCAL SPORTS - SKIING IN CYPRUS - Cyprus Ski Federation and Club The impressive Troodos mountain range with its idyllic forests stretches across most of the western side of Cyprus, offering a cool sanctuary in the summer and the opportunity for sports in the winter. At the top of the Troodos Mountains one can also find the only Skiing Center in Cyprus where you can take advantage of the pleasures of Winter Sports under the beautiful Mediterranean blue sky. Skiing can be enjoyed on the slopes of Mount Olympus (1951 metres a.s.l.), usually from the beginning of January until the end of March. Mount Olympus is only 2 km, from Troodos mountain resort, 12 km from Platres mountain resort and about an hour’s drive from the seaside town of Limassol and the Capital, Nicosia. An International F.I.S. Skiing Competition is organised every year by the Cyprus Ski Federation and takes place at the ZEUS Slalom Homologated Piste. The Cyprus Ski Club operates four ski lifts at the Troodos ski centre: a chairlift on the FIS homologated slope of Zeus (380 Meters), a 262m T-bar type ski lift on the Hera slope, a 125m T-bar ski-lift on the Sun Valley area leading to the Aphrodite slope, a 140m T-bar ski lift on Sun Valley leading to the Hermes slope. The ski lifts operate from 09.00. All runs are suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers. The Ski Shop is situated in the ‘Sun Valley’ area. It is operated by the Cyprus Ski Club and is run by trained technicians. It has approximately 300 pairs of Alpine skis and 400 pairs of ski boots, 50 snowboards with boots and 50 pairs of Cross Country skis and boots. The Ski Shop is open throughout the week during the winter season. For more information, see: www.cyprusski.com or contact The Cyprus Ski Federation and Club on 22449837

Bathroom Make-Over Last month we talked about safety aspects in the bathroom, and now we’ll look at making it an all-round more comfortable place for everyone – which just might mean a complete make-over. Much of the thinking behind updating bathrooms in the UK we would find difficult if not impossible to do in Cyprus because building methods are completely different here. Moving walls is difficult for a start! However it doesn’t stop us doing some creative thinking ourselves about what could be done to really improve outdated facilities. Bathrooms are generally small rooms, often having to accommodate more than one person, and if the door crowds the space, it may be possible to re-hinge and open it outwards. There may be room on the outside for a sliding door, or a false wall to incorporate it as a ‘pocket’ sliding door. Our high ceilings may be great in summer to disperse heat, but they certainly make for a freezing cold bathroom in the winter (and this year we’ve been having one). Think about putting in a false insulated ceiling with some LED down lighters. This will enable you to get rid of the unflattering light over the mirror, and use the electrical feed to put a de-mister pad on the back of the mirror instead. Hooray – no more steamed up mirrors! Consider electric under-floor heating (small space, not too expensive to run) or heated towel rails to give you winter comfort. Also, wall-mounting the basin and WC will not only give an illusion of more space but there is actually more room for your feet. Even better, the room will be much easier to clean. If the plumbing services allow, can your bath, shower, basin or WC be re-positioned for a more comfortable design? And if we’re hacking out the walls for structural, electrical or plumbing work, re-tiling is obviously on the agenda. There are plenty of tiling tips to help improve the illusion of space, but using the same light colour tile for both floor and walls is a really good idea, as is tiling transversely in a long narrow room. Do you have room for a bench or a seat (fold-up or not)? Sitting down to dry your toes is a treat, whatever your age. If you need a grab bar by the shower, the bath or the basin, buy some snazzy ones – chrome on brass or else they’ll rust – and they will look cool, not institutional. Finally, if you’re that lucky person who actually has a big bathroom which looks a bit empty, you could put a box seat in the middle with a lift-up lid for the laundry, or build in a tall cupboard with slatted shelves and mini heater to create… Now, what was that thing we had years ago? I know – an airing cupboard! Kindly Written by Corinne Twining - Interior Designer. Plants - Indoors and Outdoors Plants are easy to grow indoors and outdoors here in Cyprus. To thrive indoors, most plants will need good light or even full sun. You can keep your potted Geraniums blooming all year round by bringing them indoors during the winter months. This is only for plants that are already in pots because Geraniums do not like having their roots disturbed! Fragrant Jasmine Vines will grow indoors or outdoors, either way they need plenty of sunlight and they bring a beautiful aroma to the house. Most types of Begonia will do well inside or out, they do like humidity so you will have to ‘mist spray’ them regularly. Kitchen window sills are ideal for herbs especially if you like fresh herbs for cooking with. Choose a few that you particularly like but some will grow better than others. Some indoor plants can be re-planted outdoors when they have out grown your room. Schefflera (The umbrella plant) if planted outside in the spring will adjust to outdoor life and quite easily become an outdoor plant. Also your Dracaena can be moved outdoors when they become too tall for your living room. Believe it or not the plant that you know as lucky bamboo is a member of the Dracaena family. Small orange trees can be kept indoors, whereas back in England you would need a conservatory to keep them in all year round. Here in Cyprus we can put them out in the spring without any problems.

Compost Kids - Growing Flowers Ready for Mother’s Day In your garden or perhaps at school in your class rooms, you could try planting something to grow ready to give to your Mum for Mother’s Day. Sunflowers are my favourite, they grow very quickly and are remarkably tough and will grow in any type of soil, plus a packet of seeds will only cost a few Euros. If you do not have much money you could ask a friend to join in with you and share the seeds. Plant 1 or 2 seeds in a pot of soil and keep it well watered. Your seed should start to grow within 7-14 days. By the time Mother’s Day arrives, you will have a lovely plant. You may not have any flowers yet but they will come later. You could draw a lovely picture of how you think your plant is going to look and make it into a Mother’s Day card. I am sure whatever you grow will make her happy because you have done it yourself and especially for her. Have fun growing your plant. If planted outside always remember that sunflower seeds and stems emit substances that stop the growth of other plants and should be separated from potatoes and pole beans. The seeds feed the birds when it has flowered but the toxins from the seed husks kill grass. They are not harmful to animals and people and the toxins biodegrade into the soil.

SALES - RENTALS - DEEDS - MORTGAGES - LEGALITY - ADVICE

Eastern Cyprus Property Market 2016/2017 I can’t believe February is here again! The start of another property year and a good time to review the performance of the market last year and look forward to what 2017 holds for property owners. The good news is that overall sales in Cyprus increased by a huge 43% year on year! In Larnaca district the number of transactions rose 27% against 2015 which is a fantastic performance. In Famagusta total sales grew 35% after a very disappointing 2015 performance. This was partly due to the Capital Gains incentive in place during 2016 (any property purchased prior to 31 December 2016 will be exempt from Capital Gains tax in the future) also to the influx in foreign investment. It should be noted however, that the sales figures for the year also include ‘debt for asset swaps’ undertaken by the bank which will skew the overall sales figures. At present there is no way to differentiate the two. Property Sales 2017 This time last year we predicted that sales would increase 10-12% year on year so we are delighted to report that we severely underestimated! During 2017, we anticipate countrywide sales increasing by a further 10-15% with both districts reporting similar growth levels. There continues to be many positive factors influencing the growth; increase in available title deeds, excellent prices, improved mortgage availability and exciting new projects are all positive moves. The upgrading of many areas, investment in tourism facilities and the new Ayia Napa Marina are all strong positives for the East of the Island. Property Prices This time last year we predicted price drops of between 1-2% and in this respect we were close to the mark. This year we anticipate a small increase in average prices of perhaps 2-3% with better growth on quality (and well located property) and stability on less desirable properties. Stability seems to have begun to return as we had hoped! New Projects Several newer projects were begun as predicted in the area, all at the middle to high end of the market to accommodate interest from permanent residency/passport seekers. The quality of these projects is excellent and they are attracting a great deal of interest. There are more in the pipeline. The prices for many of these projects tend to appeal to the wealthy but there are many small ‘boutique’ projects ideal for the clever purchaser. All in all, 2016 was the best year since 2010 and all indications are that sales will continue to improve during 2017. Thanks to Island Homes for contributing this article. Communal Property Advice 6 While there are many benefits to owning a property in a communal building, development or resort, there are also additional concerns. Your fellow owners and neighbours become part of your investment, almost as if they were indirect partners. They can negatively affect your investment as much as a bad business partner can affect a business. This is why it’s essential when purchasing property with communal facilities that you properly understand the unique aspects relating to communal property ownership.

Do you have any questions you would like answered

This issue: Records That Should Be Kept

A high resolution, indexed copy of the Property Regulations

If you missed last month’s article, I discussed the benefits of organising site improvements to increase standards and payment rates. In this article, I will discuss what type of records you should be keeping and why. While it may seem common sense to some, when we take on new contracts you would be surprised at the poor quality or lack of records we are handed over. Lack of transparency is one of the most common reasons given for non-payment. While embezzlement from the communal fund is rare, suspicions and accusations are very common. Almost every committee will have had some form of accusation at some point. These are usually made by a debtor but any accusation or concern raised can quickly spread and cause damage to the reputation of the committee, severely effecting your ability to operate and collect communal funds. If you keep accurate and comprehensive accounts, you can help prevent these accusations being made and allow you to easily respond with facts and figures in any event. If a comment or accusation is made and you don’t have the records to support you, even though you have done nothing wrong - the suspicion will remain. Basic records that should be kept: • Financial records • Itemised monthly & annual income reports • Itemised monthly & annual expenditure reports • Communal bank account statements • Original invoices and receipts for every transaction • General records • List of all units including arrears and debtor classification • Unit owner contact information • Maintenance completed & pending • Minutes of AGM and committee meetings Making These Records Available to Unit Owners 38t, Part IV (6) & VI (45+46) outlines the responsibility for the committee regarding the submission of the communal accounts. These should be submitted every three months, presented at the annual general meeting and the original records must be made permanently available to every unit owner at a reasonable time. 44

RECIPES - FOOD - DRINKS - INGREDIENTS - TIPS

Carol’s Carrot Cake with Sultanas This month I’m going to give you a recipe from a very good friend of mine, Carol Whitaker. Carol worked with me many years ago at Blueberries, she is now based in the UK and she is a brilliant Patisserie. Believe me, her Carrot Cake with sultanas is absolutely delicious and very easy to make, you cannot go wrong with this recipe! Good enough to serve when friends are visiting for coffee, for your loved one on Valentine’s day, or just to spoil yourself and put your feet up with a nice cuppa. Many thanks Carol! Ingredients: 250g self raising flour 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 200ml extra virgin olive oil 50ml sunflower oil 185g soft light brown sugar 4 eggs 175g golden syrup 390g grated carrot 60g chopped walnuts 40g sultanas Ingredients for the Topping: 400g cream cheese 3 heaped tablespoons icing sugar 1/4 pint double cream 20g chopped walnuts Method for the Cake: Sieve all dry ingredients (flour, cinnamon, ginger, soda) together in a bowl. In a food mixer and on low speed, beat the eggs, both oils and golden syrup until light and well mixed. Add all your sieved dry ingredients and continue to mix well. Stir in the carrots, walnuts and sultanas and add to a 12” deep greased and lined cake tin. Bake in a pre-heated oven at a 170’. After 20 mins, once the cake has risen and browned on the top, remove from oven, wrap and cover in foil. Return to the oven for approximately 60 mins. Insert a skewer or knife into the centre of the cake and if it comes out dry and clean then the cake is ready. Leave the cake to cool completely. Method for the Topping: Place the cream into a whisking bowl and whisk until nearly firm. Add the cream cheese and icing sugar. Mix until thick enough to spread on top. Ensure you don’t over mix. Spread the mixture over the top of the cake and sprinkle with nuts. Enjoy!

LAW - FINANCES - YOUR RIGHTS - INVESTMENTS - ADVICE - GUIDANCE

Compliance in International Finance at Last Maria Milaj, Head of the Compliance Department at Woodbrook Group, which offers unbiased financial advise in Cyprus and around the globe, would like to talk about the importance of having a Compliance Department looking after your needs. Compliance, which is quite a new segment of the financial industry, Banks, Investment Companies, Auditors, etc. realised the importance of compliance after the crisis in 2007, but unfortunately it was already too late. I would like to guide you through the basics and benefits to clients of dealing with a fully compliant company like Woodbrook Group.

What is compliance? Regulatory compliance describes the goal that organisations aspire to achieve in their efforts to ensure that they are aware of and take steps to comply with relevant laws and regulations. What does this mean in the case of Woodbrook Group? The company is licensed by CySEC (Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission) and complies with all the regulation requirements of the Commission and subject to the European MiFID (Markets in Financial Instruments Directive). Our clients are protected by the Cyprus and EU regulations, since the company is supervised by the needed Authorities and uses the investment products allowed by them. Corporate compliance is the day-to-day operational segment of the department which comprises the ethics of the company, mitigates the reputation risk, adherence and maintain the company policies, laws and the execution of them by the employees, management and supervisory bodies. What does this mean for the clients? Every employee, contractor and business partner of the company has to comply with the regulatory laws, directives, guidelines and Woodbrook Group’s Ethics Manual. Every client-consultant relationship, financial assessment, contract, agreement, KYC (Know Your Client) documentation is monitored, conducted or supervised by the Compliance Department, including AML (Anti Money Laundering) monitoring. As you can see the two compliance segments are supporting each other and covering both regulatory requirements and ethical bases. Woodbrook Group has established both segments to ensure a strong compliance presents with which our clients can have a peace of mind when establishing a business relationship with our company.

Flashback Phone Apps I love a bit of nostalgia and one of my favourite things at the moment is the flashback phone app 'Timehop' and 'On This Day’ on Facebook. If you haven't gathered by now, it’s an App which shows you your photos and statuses from 'this' day in previous years. The Facebook one even posts to your wall and comments on stuff. It is strange to read things that I'd written so long ago and to think of how much things have changed. Unfortunately, I’m also reminded of the random rubbish that I used to post when my friends were just a small handful of only 'real life' people I used to see in the pub. Some of my favourite comments now (alongside the 'moving to Cyprus’ month) are the bored, ramblings and revelations of my overdue, big, fat, pregnant self during May 2009. 'Emma is drumming her fingers impatiently' 'Emma has washed every single item of clothing we own and it turns out that they don't all fit in the cupboard if they are clean at the same time' I was on Facebook a lot back then waiting for my due date, although surprisingly not as much as I am now. I can use work as an excuse these days and it's a lot easier now I have a decent phone! It’s also a great way to ensure I never get broody when I see pictures of the boys trying to feed themselves and being covered head to toe in yoghurt or mashed vegetables. I like to see the cute baby photos and marvel at how quickly the time seems to have passed but it makes me feel thankful that the sleepless nights and nappy days are gone. I’m also grateful that the boys are generally more fun to be around these days! I’m reminded to appreciate these times even when a 7 year and 4-year-old can be challenging, as these days too will pass just as fast as the others did. These little glimpses into the past fascinate me and I love the reminders of days gone by. Sometimes it seems like a whole lifetime ago looking back on ordinary memories and pictures of something that no longer exists - a childfree life in England! Last night, 9 years ago for example, I was debating whether to go to the gym or the pub - I didn't mention which I chose but I'm fairly sure I could accurately guess! Now if only someone could invent time travel for real! Emma Martin writes an online blog ‘A matter of choice’ about random thoughts & views of an expat Mum in Cyprus & is the founder of the Famagusta Parents Network. Ask Gina

Pet of the Month

Dear Gina, I have recently received a formal letter stating that I must have a dog licence. The letter was written in Greek and I am Bulgarian, so I asked my neighbour to translate it for me. She said that since my dog came from another country, I have to have certain papers before I can get the licence. However, I still have no idea where to go and what I need to do to obtain the licence. Can you please tell me what I have to do to get one? Also, do you think I will be fined because I didn’t have a licence for the last 8 months while I’ve been living here in Cyprus? I find paper work in Cyprus so frustrating! Angellina Ainova, Frenaros.

Cassey is a female Labrador born on 17.11.12. She measures 57cm shoulder height. Cassey has a typical Labrador love of food, so she is slightly on the overweight side! She is an active dog, good on the lead, loves people but can be dominant with other female dogs. Cats are a definite dislike as far as Cassey is concerned. She does not like being given medication and is very nervous of the vet, so she has to be handled by the vet with great care. Cassey has previously lived in a home but she was brought into the shelter by the owner as a temporary measure while he moved house. Sadly, he did not return for her. The address he gave was not found and the telephone number unavailable. Cassey is micro chipped, spayed and fully vaccinated and knows basic commands. An ideal home environment for her would be where she is an only dog and no children in the home. She will make a fabulous loyal friend and companion.

Don’t panic Angellina. I am asked this question a lot from both English and Cypriot people. I know what you mean with regards to the paper work here in Cyprus! No offence to anyone but life would be much easier if an extra moment was taken to explain official paper work. Stating exactly what we need to do, with the easiest way to do it, instead of sending us on a wild goose chase just to end up where we had originally started. The forms should also be available in English as well as Greek. Anyway, I’m going to give you easy and quick instructions on how to get your dog licence. Firstly, all dogs have to be micro-chipped in order to obtain their licence. Your dog obviously has been otherwise it wouldn’t have been accepted into the country. You then have to make sure your dog is registered in Cyprus. All you have to do is take your pet’s passport or health book to your own private veterinary doctor and fill out some forms. He will give you the forms and will sign them for you. They then have to be taken to the Government Vets in Ormideia village to be signed by an authorised Government Veterinary Doctor. Sounds crazy doesn’t it? Hope I haven’t scared you! Now, back to my earlier comment about making paper work easier and procedures easier! This is what you are going to do instead! You simply have to go to your own veterinary doctor and request that he does all this for you. Plus, he will make sure that your pet’s passport or health book is up to date with the required caniquantel vaccine or caniquantel tablets. Yes - it really is that simple! Once all of this is done, you can pop down to your local town hall with the registration form and get your dog licence. You can then renew the dog licence every year with the same registration form and don’t worry, you will not be fined for the delayed months that you did not have a licence.
