10th Anniversary Annual Showcase Tempo Dance and Theatre School performed on the 10th of December in Sotira Town Hall indoor theatre. This was their 10th annual showcase and it was dedicated to Marjorie Deighton, mother of Claire Deighton, Principal of Tempo Dance and Theatre School. Sadly, Marjorie also known as ‘Grandma’ passed in August after a bad fall. She had her own dancing school in Manchester for 54 years and was a huge inspiration to hundreds of students over the years. She performed in Tempo’s ‘Circle of Life’ Finale back in 2009 and played the role of the Bird Lady in the showcase in 2010. Both dances were recreated in this year’s annual showcase. Tempo’s performance, called ‘Inventions Past and Present’ was a two-part showcase. The choreography and production was by Claire Deighton B.Ed.Hons Dance. The first part was an exciting journey through the past 10 years of Tempo shows. One of the things that was remarkable about this show is that there were students taking part that have performed in every single show these 10 past years! The second part was a Tempo’s fun and quirky version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The show was, as always, amazing and inspiring and a reflection of the really hard work of all the students and teachers of Tempo Dance and Theatre School.

6th Christmas Avenue
Stardust Raise Money For Cancer Support
The 6th Christmas Avenue was successfully held on Sunday 10th of December 2017 in the Municipality of Deryneia.
The Stardust team throughout the summer were collecting donations during their shows and were selling key rings with all profits going to charity. In addition to that, Kieran Whitley-Beckwith, Owner and Director of the Stardust Variety Show did a charity skydive and he collected more donations.
Eleftherias Avenue was turned into a pedestrian street from 10:30am until 5:00 pm and many local and foreign residents, young and old, from Deryneia and the surrounding area had the chance to enjoy an all-day artistic program and activities in a festive Christmas atmosphere. The program began with a parade of participants at Christmassy Eleftherias Avenue and it also included dances, music and fashion shows. The shopkeepers satisfied their clientele with Christmas offers in their products and the Organised Groups of the Municipality participated with their own kiosks, while stilt walkers and Santa Claus entertained the young children.
They managed all together from April until October to gather up the amazing amount of ÂŁ4,571.95 which was donated to the Macmillan Cancer Support! Well done Stardust team!

Oh, Yes They Did It! Yes, they really did! The Dhekelia Theatre Club pulled off a brilliant performance of the pantomime ‘Mother Goose’! I was lucky enough to attend the last performance of this year’s panto and was once again royally entertained. Everything about the evening was superb, each little detail is thought about and it is a real treat for everyone. In fact, I feel it is the very start of the Christmas festivities and I think many other people feel the same way. For the duration of the performance, we are terribly, typically British, one might almost expect to see snow outside the theatre on leaving, not a balmy Cypriot evening breeze! Of course, the humour in this pantomime was just what we wanted, pure slapstick! As usual, there were some brilliant performers. Mother Goose herself (or should I say himself!) was brilliantly cast in this role and wonderfully convincing; well done to Steven Guy. His counterpart, a nasty baddy called Demon Night, played by Shaun Reid, was suitably very scary indeed! The beautiful goose Priscilla was so sweet and attuned to acting to the audience; Erin Maddams played her so well. So many wonderful performances in a large cast who knew how to play proper old-fashioned panto. There was a lot of audience participation, as is the traditional way with pantomime and everybody helped to pull this off. There was a large chorus, gentlemen, ladies and children too; all were very good. The music was played well too by the orchestra and this added to the professionalism of the whole thing. Claire Saul and Michelle Howarth were instrumental in making sure the choreography and singing were spot-on and everybody was superb. The massive team effort which such a production demands was evident in not only the slick timing and professionalism of the actors but also in the wonderful props and colourful set designs and painting, and also in the sound and lighting systems which worked brilliantly. The amazing costumes were a credit to Nikki Allgood, as she made 120 of them! Many more behind the scenes people were responsible in their own way for helping to make the production so memorable, those dealing with the box office, stage crew and of course the bar staff who made sure everybody had refreshments on the night. Stage Manager, Alistair McGregor, assisted by his Stage Crew helped to make sure everything ran properly and of course, the Producer and Director, Josephine M. Smith (Jo), is to be congratulated for her vision and her hard work in making sure that this pantomime was probably Dhekelia Theatre Club’s best production yet. If you are interested in taking part in future Dhekelia Theatre Club’s productions or helping with backstage including costumes etc., then please refer to the Facebook page for further information. Can’t wait for next year’s production! Helen Barrett Larnaca Community Writer

Tis The Season! Over the last year or so, the Oroklini Community Choir has gone from strength to strength. Not only has it increased in size to over forty members but is growing in reputation too. For the festive season, the first performance of the Oroklini Community Choir was on 8th of December for its second Christmas Carols and Songs Show. The venue was at Oroklini’s Council Office’s Theatre and there was a large audience in attendance. Under the leadership of Claire Saul, the mixed choir sang a wonderful repertoire of Carols and Christmas songs. As well as the Choir, there was a solo performance from Mick Allgood on saxophone with some beautiful tunes for Christmas. There were also dance performances from the students of the Nea Genia Dance School (Oroklini) who charmed the audience with their Christmas-themed dances. There was a Grand Raffle with more than 50 prizes, donated kindly by local businesses and organisations as well as individuals. Over €700 was raised and this went to the charity ‘Holiday of A Lifetime’ which provides holidays for under privileged children. From their enthusiastic response, the audience were very happy with the Carol Concert and the next venue for the Oroklini Community Choir was at the turning on of the Christmas lights in the village Centre in Oroklini. It was a lovely, festive atmosphere with the huge Christmas Tree and free warming refreshments on hand. Other performers from the village took part including the children from the local school. Father Christmas was in attendance too! Oroklini Community Choir also took part in a Carol Concert at the Kama Lifestyle in Pernera and this was very well received. A wonderful evening was had by all and the choir had very good feedback from everyone. At both performances, Richard Fairhead was the soundman and is to be congratulated for his sterling work and commitment to make the lovely sound we heard from the choir. Without his expertise the concerts would not have had the impact and magical sound the audience enjoyed! The choir has also sung at Larnaca Community Church and were made most welcome and after their singing they were treated to a delicious lunch! In addition to that they appeared at The Oasis and Terra Santa in Larnaca, helping to bring some festive cheer to the residents there. If you would like to join the Oroklini Community Choir, please phone Claire Saul on 99935637. Also on their Facebook page. Helen Barrett Larnaca Community Writer

However, avoid becoming a workaholic, as it may affect your health. March to May looks a bit low and after October, some health issues are possible. Try to eat healthy and do not nibble on street food, as they are unhygienic and made of bad-quality ingredients. Drive carefully. Children will be laborious and students will perform very well. Domestic life will be good and harmonious with some occasional issues. However, you should avoid the feeling of detachment or lack of contentment in domestic life. Marital life will beget good results, but the health of a spouse may give you hiccups. Love life will gain strength. Domination over opponents will be there. Overall, a good year for you, health should be on check.

On the other side, your health will give you hiccups. But you will get some foreign connections and through them your earnings will increase. At the workplace, you will gain in authority but stay away from any controversy. Getting involved in any controversy might give you a bad name, with people pointing fingers at you even though you’re not guilty. Your profile and reputation at work will increase and you may get a new assignment or important project in your hand. Maintain good relations with seniors, as they will extend their favours. Domestic life will flourish and a bond of togetherness will gain more strength. In marital life, some misunderstanding will take place which you should avoid. After October, your married life will also improve and you will enjoy a good personal life. Overall, a year to excel in life and improve your weaknesses. 23

Album Review: Songs of Experience, U2
Movie Review: Daddy’s Home 2
The Irish rock band U2 released on the 1st of December 2017 their fourteenth studio album called Songs of Experience.
Daddy's Home 2 is a 2017 American Christmas comedy film directed by Sean Anders and written by Anders and John Morris.
Songs of Experience is the companion release to 2014’s ‘Songs of Innocence’, the two titles drawing inspiration from a collection of poems, ‘Songs of Innocence and Experience’, by the 18th century English mystic and poet William Blake.
Following the events of the first film, Father and stepfather Dusty and Brad (Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell) join forces to make Christmastime perfect for the children. Their newfound partnership soon gets put to the test when Dusty's old-school, macho dad Kurt (Mel Gibson) and Brad's gentle father Don (John Lithgow) arrive to turn the holiday upside down, along with Dusty’s conflict with his stepchild’s biological father Roger (John Cena). After a sudden change in plans, the four men decide to take the kids to a luxury resort for a fun-filled getaway that turns into a hilariously chaotic adventure.
Whereas its predecessor explored the group members' adolescence in Ireland in the 1970s, Songs of Experience thematically is a collection of letters written by lead vocalist Bono to people and places closest to his heart. The personal nature of the lyrics reflects a ‘brush with mortality’ that he had during the album's recording. The lyrics were inspired by the Irish poet, novelist and Trinity College Professor Emeritus Brendan Kennelly. He advised Bono to ‘write as if you were dead’ and that resulted in a collection of songs in a form of intimate letters to family, friends, fans or himself. In November 2014 Bono was recovering from a serious bicycle accident and at this time he spent time song writing this album. The band worked on this album throughout 2015 while Innocence + Experience Tour was on the road. They continued working on the album through 2016 and it was complete by the end of 2016.

So, New Year is upon us, that time for making resolutions which you may or may not keep but it’s always worth giving it a go and perhaps it will lead to making a ‘New You’. Resolutions don’t always have to be about giving things up or putting yourself through dire diets etc., it can be about trying out a new experience or doing something that makes things better for others and the bonus is you get to meet new people and perhaps find out something new about yourself and your abilities. In Cyprus, we are very lucky to have a climate that means getting active outside isn’t quite as daunting or painful as in other climates; there are a wealth of walking groups and running groups, which give you a chance to do exercise, usually at not too athletic a pace and of course enjoy the lovely blue sky and sunshine. These groups also give you the chance to get to know areas off the beaten path as well as being a way to meet new people and socialise with them. Of course, if you don’t fancy the outdoors there are a number of indoor heated pools where you can do a swim or exercise class or just enjoy keeping that swimming going until it is warm enough to brave the outdoor pools and sea. However, for a really invigorating experience you could join the merry band of swimmers that brave the water at Mackenzie beach all year round and at least you can get a warm drink straight after from one of the nearby cafés that stay open year-round. If keeping fit isn’t really your thing but you want to meet new people then perhaps taking up a new activity or learning a new skill might be for you. There are lots of options to choose from whether it is learning Greek, singing in a choir, learning to play an instrument, joining a knitting, crochet or needlework group or trying out Golf, Ten Pin Bowling or Darts, just to mention a few. There is a wealth of options out there, as advertised in this month’s issue, so if you are invited to ‘come along’ to something, why not give it a go. If you are still stuck for ideas of what to take on as a new year resolution then many of the local charities are always appreciative of new volunteers. There are various charity shops that need volunteer staff and animal charities that need people to help with the care of dogs and cats and to assist with fund raising events and you may have just the skills and enthusiasm they are looking for. Doing your bit for charities can be so rewarding for both you and the chosen charity and of course can lead to a long and fulfilling commitment that gives you purpose and motivation to get up and at it all year long. So, let’s get out there and try something new and embrace 2018 and all that it has to offer. Written by Kim Joynes

Simple but Effective Wrapped Jar Planter Firstly, Happy New Year one and all! Hope that everyone had a good one and didn’t have to spend too much time recovering. As it is now the start of a new year and everyone is a little tired from celebrations or a little busy preparing for the year ahead, I thought I would do something nice and easy for this month’s craft that anyone can do. This method of twine wrapping can be used on pretty much anything (we have even used it on an empty pot noodle pot!) and is a simple way of creating an attractive and cheap planter, storage jar, vase or candle holder. Use it to wrap a plant pot as a gift or on a bottle to create a decorative item for your home. The possibilities are endless and all it really costs are a few Euro for your twine and your time.
What you will need: A Ball of Twine (or string) Super glue or Craft glue A clean jar, bottle, plant pot, or something similar (I would recommend something made of non-breakable material if you are doing this with your children)
How to do it: 1. Put a dab or line of glue where you wish your wrapping to start. Wait for it to be slightly tacky and then place the end of your twine into it. 2. Carefully keeping hold of your original end of twine slowly wrap it around your jar. Do this reasonably firmly to prevent sagging and every now and again push the twine down to ensure no gaps appear between wraps. 3. Wrap your desired amount of twine around your jar and then finish in the same way with a dab of glue to hold the final end in place. 4. Fill it! You can put anything in your jar or container, when it’s finished but normally I use these as gifts so place some decorative stones in the bottom then add some soil, add a herb or small plant and top of with soil and more decorative stones. You can then tie a ribbon around your jar and even add a gift label or care instructions. I hope you have fun creating some pretty gifts and storage with this craft and wish everyone the best for a Happy and Healthy 2018!!

Anyone for Golf? Golfer’s Elbow is the common name for medial epicondylitis. Such injuries are caused by overuse of the forearm muscles leading to a tear/inflammation of the tendons attached to the elbow region. Despite the name, it is common for inactive desk workers to develop these injuries from hours of repetitive computer/writing work. The individual usually performs activities above and beyond what they are accustomed to, resulting in pain in the elbow or forearm muscles. People may experience symptoms which range from pain while gripping objects, to constant unremitting ache. Many people who suffer from golfer’s elbow often report a history of pain that has existed for many months. The flexor tendons are put under stress by activities which force the forearm outwards away from the body. These stresses occur as the wrist is cocked prior to throwing or in the golf swing from high backswing to just before the ball is hit. Some patients report an acute onset pain but the majority develop pain over a period. With osteopathic treatment, the muscle ache is reduced, the tightness lessened and the strength to grip, lift and carry improves. The main symptoms of golfer’s elbow are an ache or pain over the front of the inner elbow which is worsened by repeated wrist bending and improved by rest. Hand, forearm, elbow and shoulder pain may be reported with grip weakness in the hand. If the ulnar nerve is involved, this can also contribute to the weakness and give pins and needles in the forearm. Osteopaths work uniquely in that, considering how other areas such as shoulder/neck being stiff or wrist malfunction can influence elbow injuries. This is an important distinction from other forms of treatment because osteopaths believe that the body is connected in form and function allowing the tendon to heal, releasing trigger points/knots in the muscles and mobilizing the joints, thus stopping the muscles from over contracting. For many sufferers, complete recovery from elbow injuries involves resolving neck, shoulder and wrist problems. Modification of the use of the arm is vital to prevent on-going stimulation of the condition, so altering the mechanics of swinging the golf club or other sporting activities is essential. Patient education continues with the identification of aggravating activities and postures and the patient should be taught to avoid them. It can take up to 3 months to help a golfer’s elbow depending on how chronic and how long you have had the problem but most of the treatment and management is done by the patient. The sooner you consult your osteopath, the quicker the recovery. 32

2018 A Smart Year Smart Home & Smart Cars When talking about smart electronics, today’s world has so much more to offer than smartphones and tablet computers. Consumer electronics of all kind are becoming smarter by the day and this is now becoming visible in all aspects of our lives. The two most prominent industries: smart home and smart car. The upcoming generation of products in these sectors will be focusing on getting to know their users as close as possible. By learning about the exact habits and routines of their user’s life, these smart electronics will make your life easier and more efficient. As an example lets imagine what a smart coffee machine would do. Such an everyday electronic item could notice and remember what times its user likes to have his hot beverage. As a result, it could be programmed to brew a fresh cup of coffee at these specific times, without you needing to lift a finger. A second topic that is expected to play a major role in the future of these industry sectors is voice recognition. Thanks to the latest smart technology, recognition rates are increasing significantly. This technology can already be used to secure/access locked files or to command/activate an electronic device. It is, however, still not used that frequently by the everyday consumer. This is expected to change in the future now that this technology is rapidly developing both in the smart home and smart car industry.
Smart TV & Audio and Smartphones In this particular sector of consumer electronics, the future trends and changes will mainly be related to design and picture quality. Especially with TVs, the main area concerns the competition between OLED or LED and UHD or HDR. Each type of display is trying to differentiate itself by offering the sharpest, most detailed and vivid visuals. Besides picture quality, another trend that can be seen in the smart TV industry is related to the design of the TV itself. Displays are becoming larger, yet thinner all the time. In the future, it is even expected that major electronics companies such as Samsung will deliver ultra thin and flexible displays. Energy efficiency and connectivity are other major topics that play an important role in each sector. Whether it’s TVs, audio or smartphones, all devices are searching to increase their efficiency and connectivity. For home audio appliances, streaming services and multi rooms these are considered key areas of interest. Regarding the latest smartphones, we’ll see an increased interest in increasing processing power. Along with that come secondary phone features such as dual lens cameras and bezel less displays. Last but not least, with respect to our smartphones, we also expect to see major developments in the fields of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. THE LATEST SPORTS AND EVENTS NEWS
LOCAL SPORTS - SCUBA DIVING AND SNORKELLING In case you missed it, you may be interested in this recent news article from www.newsincyprus.com about the planned dive sites off the Larnaca coast. The creation of a new artificial reef by sinking a ship off the coast of Larnaca, in the Oroklini area, is to be delayed for over a year. The merchant vessel, built in 1965 in Germany, had sailed from Antikithira in Greece to the port of Vassiliko in October where it was to be stripped and cleaned ahead of its sinking off Larnaca in March 2018. Now, according to reports in the local Cyprus press, the sinking will be postponed until April of the following year. The reasons given for the delay are mainly due to the size and complexity of the operation. Given the large size of the ship there is a need to conduct a study on the specific methods of cleaning in order to launch a tender with exact specifications. Specialised companies need to be contacted for such cleaning with terms for removing certain materials from the old merchant ship. It is estimated that deep cleaning the vessel to eliminate any possibility of marine pollution will take about 3-4 months. The ship, 63 metres long and 10 metres wide, will be the largest in Cyprus to be used specifically for the purpose of creating an artificial reef. It will eventually be sunk in an area with a depth of 30 metres in the seas near the Palm Beach Hotel. This location was selected following mapping of habitats and recording of biodiversity by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research. The scientific study also took measurements of sea currents, water purity and accessibility, and on the basis of the results this location was considered ideal. The area was selected over the other two examined, namely near the beach of Kastella and the sea near Larnaca airport. According to the article in Haravgi it has also been decided to sink a second smaller boat in the same area. The boat, named LEF 1, was donated to the Petrolina Tourist Development Company and will be sunk at the point of the natural reef that exists in the sea behind the Palm Beach Hotel, at a depth of about 7-10 metres. The second vessel will be used to create a Snorkelling Park (diving with a sea mask) within the area of the artificial reef, which will also become a protected area.

5 Tips to Finding the Right Car for You 1. Assess Your Needs You might be dreaming about which car you want but it’s best to think more about what you need the car for. Not just for the time being but for the future too. For example: • what driving you are going to do, highway, normal streets or on-off roads? • automatic or manual? • are you going to be using the car for towing? • what parking space do you have available? • how many passengers do you need to carry? • are going to be using a children’s seat? • do you need a big or small boot? • what safety features are important for you? • in what weather are you going to be driving - normal, rainy, ice or snow? 2. Decide about Your Budget If you don’t pay cash for your new car, you will need to think about how much you are going to arrange for the payments of your purchase. Questions like how much can you afford to pay every month for it, is very important. If this is a vehicle you are going to be using for work you might consider instead of buying, to lease one as it can be more economic long term. 3. Consider Other Cars in the same Class If you have already set your heart on buying a specific car, check first similar cars in that class and category you are looking in, as there might be a new release that you haven’t seen. The car industry releases continuously new models, so by researching you might find a model that is very close to the one you have set your mind but more economic or more safe driving. 4. Consider the Cost of Owning a Car You might be between two cars to buy, that have the same price. Regardless of that, you must consider how much it will cost to service, insure and maintain. Therefore, before deciding which is the appropriate car for you, estimate how much the ownership of that car is going to cost you. 5. Arrange for a Test Drive After you have picked the car you like and is suitable for you, arrange with the car dealer to schedule a date and time for a test drive. Don’t forget that regardless of all the good features the car might have, you have to drive it and ‘see how it feels’.

The ‘Spare’ Room I know it is January, but summer’s coming, bringing back sunshine and warmth, days on the beach and barbecues and a flock of summer visitors. It also brings back the spare room dilemma. Think about it, the first ones will probably arrive at Easter! I well remember my whole family kipping down all over the house to give up our bedrooms for summer visitors (that’s what we called tourists in Cornwall in the 50’s/60’s) for B&B. Well, you make sacrifices to earn a bob or two, and if Airbnb is your bag, you probably still would. But here we’re talking about making everyone comfortable in their own space, without being resentful about losing yours. Not many of us even have a dedicated spare room. If it was spare enough to be just for guests, it should really be called the guest room. But for most of us it is the home office, the playroom, the teenagers’ space, the all-the-other stuff-there-isn’t-space-for-anywhere-else room. It needs to be functional for all those things probably 300 days out of 365. Then it needs to convert to a comfortable space for parents, friends and anyone else who happens to want to visit Cyprus (and visit you of course). Once the kids and teenagers have removed all their stuff (dream on), the other ‘stuff’ will have to be shoe-horned into the high cupboards (oh, for a loft). But while you’re at it, why not go through all of it and do some minimalizing? Sell or give it to charity? Now for the sofa bed, and if it’s for elderly relatives, do make sure you buy one with a good mattress; pocket sprung will provide more support than foam. If the room is your home office, your table can be both a desk and a dressing table, so move the computer and replace it with a mirror, add a box of tissues and a vase of flowers and Bob’s your uncle. And very happy he’ll be sleeping in here too. You will also need a desk chair that works as a dressing table chair, or maybe make a loose cover for your office chair (and you might even keep it on afterwards). Find stools that can double up as bedside tables. Ikea step stools are brilliant for this and the Frosta stool can be wall mounted. You can then move the desk lamp to the bedside for late night reading. I put a couple of these ideas on my FB page. A collapsible clothes rail is great if you can find one. If not, or there’s no room, fix a curtain rail to the wall for hangers. If that sounds a bit too permanent, you can replace the hangers with hooks afterwards and hang baskets and bags for all that ‘stuff’ which will find its way back in when everyone has gone! Children’s Compost Corner Squirting Cucumber Plants Growing now in the fields and on the road sides you will often see this unusual plant and after reading this article I am sure you will keep an eye out for them. It is a native to the Mediterranean region, often considered a weed, it is a fragile vine with small greenish-yellow flowers and the blossoms are bisexual and symmetrical. The plant is part of the Gourd family and has thick haired stems that spread out around 24 inches across the ground; it bears 2 inch blue-green hairy fruits that can catapult when touched, up to 20-30 feet away from the plant, so be careful if you try to knock a seed pod off, that it does not hit you in the face like it did to me! The pod contains high levels of cucubitacins which can be fatal if ingested. Its Latin name is Ecballium Elacterium which is from the Greek Ekballein meaning to throw out, referring to the ejection of the seeds. Hope you find some but be on your guard, they are very quick.
Transforming Your Garden After talking with one of my neighbours I thought of an idea. In their garden they planted some yucca trees that over the years have grown too big and have taken over, not just the planting area but also the paving. He had cut all the tops off and was enquiring how to get the root ball out, which would prove very difficult. Instead of trying to dig them up I thought he could utilise them by cutting the tops down and hollowing out the centres to create a planter, fill it with compost and fill it with whatever flowers you like, you could even plant ivy that would grow down over the stumps and some flowering plants in the centre. He could also chop the trees down and make bird feeders by putting a platform on the top or make all the stumps the same height and place a plank on the top to create a seating area. Thanks to Ginny Malloy of the Potting Shed for supplying us with this information. In addition to supplying plants, succulents & cacti, they also deliver fresh bouquets of flowers around the Famagusta region. Tel: 96532138. Visit: www.agapanthusflowershop.com. A Positive for the Property Market for 2018! Happy New Year to our wonderful Daxi readers from your property team at Island Homes!
A New Year is always a new start and we believe that 2018 is going to be an incredible year for the Famagusta region. All of the work that has gone into the area over in recent times is really starting to pay off and there are many exciting new projects on the horizon. We believe that, early in 2018, the tender will be awarded for the Paralimni Marina contract and work will start this year. The Ayia Napa Marina is well under way and there is once again talk of a golf course in the Famagusta region.
The new hotels, increase in tourism (we are amazed to see so many red plates throughout November and December) and general upgrading of the Eastern side of Cyprus are all very welcome and give a great boost of confidence to investors and home buyers from abroad.
There is also a lot of anticipation for a number of projects soon to be announced for the Larnaca region in 2018, so watch this space!
Confidence is being restored in the property market in Cyprus, many positive moves have happened over recent years in favour of owners and these continue to improve.
It is anticipated that, during 2018, the ‘trapped buyers’ law will also be amended to provide further protection for some 70,000 people who bought during the last property boom and are still awaiting their title deeds. The law that was introduced in 2015 was flawed to some extent and the lawmakers are working on amendments to further assist these transactions.
We go into a new year with nothing but positive vibes for the future of the property industry in Cyprus and we wish you all a healthy, wealthy and happy 2018!

Communal Property Advice While there are many benefits to owning a property in an apartment building, development or resort, there are also additional concerns. This is why it’s essential when purchasing property with communal facilities, that you properly understand the unique aspects relating to communal property ownership. This Issue: Committee Member Liability Insurance If you are a member on a building’s management committee this is one of the most important articles for you. As a member of the committee you are an elected official of the property owners. You have an appropriate ‘Duty of Care’ to those owners you represent, to act always in the best interests of the property owners, and to manage, administrate and maintain the building in accordance with the Regulations.
Do you have any questions you would like answered about the above article, or are you looking for FREE expert advice on the many aspects of Communal Property Ownership? Visit my free information portal for advice and information on all aspects of Apartment and Communal property ownership www.CyprusCommunalGuide.com or email advice@CyprusCommunalGuide.com. Want to view the complete set of regulations? A high resolution, indexed copy of the Property Regulations can be downloaded at www.Download-IPA.com or on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06WLPZG35/. Author: Russell Flick is an award winning communal property specialist, public speaker and author of the ‘Ultimate Committee Handbook’, www.CyprusCommunalGuide.com / www.RussellFlick.com
You take on a responsibility and with this responsibility comes some risk. This applies to both the individual committee member and the management committee as a whole. If This article is for informational purposes only and does not you fail to meet your ‘Duty of Care’ you can be found negli- constitute legal advice. ©2017 Russell Flick. All Rights gent, which can leave you open to civil and/or criminal liability. Reserved. I have previously mentioned many good reasons to join your building’s management committee in my articles and books. While there is increased liability by taking one of these committee positions, in my opinion, the benefits from being in direct control of your significant financial investment far outweigh its risks and you can reduce this risk by taking out a dedicated committee liability insurance coverage. However, the vast majority of building public liability policies do not cover any additional coverage for legal expenses or compensation awards against the committee for any claim by a property owner or public authority. As I deal with many apartment buildings and resorts through my communal management company and in my role as the founder of www.CyprusCommunalGuide.com, I have extensive contacts within the property industry and one of these contacts works for one of the major insurance providers on the island. After explaining the problem, we worked together to design a new insurance product specifically to cover this extra liability of the committee. This was then accepted by the underwriters and rolled out as a new product. After seeing this product in the market many insurance companies followed suit and created similar products. However, few advertise it or include it by default in the standard policy. I recommend to always ask for additional coverage for the committee’s liability when taking out your buildings insurance policy. Make sure that they fully understand that this is not general or public liability. It needs to specifically cover the committee for any civil/criminal claims against them by a property owner or government/regulatory body. 46

Family Law in Cyprus In Cyprus, the majority of the cases that are related to family matters, such as divorce, property relations, marital relations, custody and maintenance of a child are resolved by Family Courts. Under certain circumstances the family matters are resolved by the President of the District Court or the Family Courts of the Religious Groups. For the Family Courts to have jurisdiction it is an important requirement that one of the parties or both parties are resident in Cyprus for a continuous period of three months or more. However, if the dispute involves property relation, then there is no need for any of the parties to be residents in Cyprus. A decision issued by a Court of another country can be enforced in Cyprus, provided that Cyprus has an agreement with that particular country for mutual recognition and enforcement of judicial decisions with the country issuing the decision. If the country issuing the decisions is an EU Member State, then the enforcement will be effected by using the EU Regulations. Regarding a divorce, the dissolution of civil marriage in Cyprus is granted in Cyprus Family Courts once the applicant files an application at the Family Court. In case of religious marriage, the spouse applying for the divorce must first notify in writing, according to Article 3(1) of L.22/90, the Bishop of the area where the applicant lives, stating the grounds for the divorce. The most common reason for divorce is the irretrievable breakdown of the marital relationship which makes the continuation of the marriage irrevocable for the applicant. In case of property relations, each spouse retains all the rights they have on their personal property. Only property that was commonly acquired after the marriage may be divided or regulated by a court order. The contribution of a spouse is presumed to be 1/3 of the increase of the value of the property unless it is proved otherwise. Being a Parent – Part 1 Being a parent changes everything. But being a parent also changes with each baby. Here are some of the ways having a second and third child is different from having your first. At Home 1st baby: You spend a good bit of every day just gazing at the baby. 2nd baby: You spend a bit of everyday watching to be sure your older child isn’t squeezing, poking or hitting the baby. 3rd baby: You spend a little bit of every day hiding from the children. Your Clothes 1st baby: You begin wearing maternity clothes as soon as your doctor confirms your pregnancy. 2nd baby: You wear your regular clothes for as long as possible. 3rd baby: Your maternity clothes ARE you regular clothes. Preparing for the Birth 1st baby: You practice your breathing religiously. 2nd baby: You don’t bother practicing because you remember that last time, breathing didn’t do a thing. 3rd baby: You ask for an epidural in your 8th month. Going Out 1st baby: The first time you leave your baby with a sitter, you call home 5 times. 2nd baby: Just before you walk out the door, you remember to leave a number where you can be reached. 3rd baby: You leave instruction for the sitter to call only if she sees blood. Baby Clothes 1st baby: You pre-wash your new-born’s clothes, colour-coordinate them and fold them neatly in the baby's little bureau. 2nd baby: You check to make sure that the clothes are clean and discard only the ones with the darkest stains. 3rd baby: Boys can wear pink, can't they? Pacifier 1st baby: If the pacifier falls on the floor, you put it away until you can go home and wash and boil it. 2nd baby: When the pacifier falls on the floor, you squirt it off with some juice from the baby's bottle. 3rd baby: You wipe it off on your shirt and pop it back in.

Pet of the Month This month we are featuring Jemimah, a small black and white short haired pointer cross. Jemimah is a very clever little dog who found her own way to the Argos Sanctuary. She was trying to reach us when she got caught in between the back fence of the Argos boarding kennels and the local farmer's land. We had to cut through our fence to free her and when we finally reached her she was really pleased to see us, showed no aggression and immediately settled in with the staff and other dogs and cats at the Sanctuary. She has a beautiful nature with a lovely temperament and would fit in well in any environment.
Happy New Year everybody! Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year! Bet you all had lots of treats including chocolate and I’m sure some of you couldn’t resist and gave some to your pet. Those puppy eyes looking up at you as you unwrap your chocolate drooling (both of you!). Well I’m here to tell you to stop! And for God’s sake hide any chocolate boxes that your dog might be able to get at. You see it’s ok for us humans to eat chocolates but did you know that chocolate can make your dog very ill? Chocolate contains a substance known as methylxanthines (specifically caffeine and theobromine). Theobromine is a bitter alkaloid found in cocoa plant. Humans easily metabolise theobromine but dogs do not, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system. Your dog will feel sick depending on the type and amount of chocolate it has consumed. I know of a case where 20 ounces of milk chocolate killed a 20-pound dog and another case where just 6 ounces of dark semisweet chocolate killed again a 20-pound dog! So, as you can see giving dark chocolate to your dog is like poisoning it. If your dog gets his paws on a large amount of chocolate it could be fatal. Effects on giving chocolates verify from the amount and type of chocolate your dog has consumed. Chocolate can cause vomiting, lethargy, convulsions, diarrhea, extreme thirst, seizures and even a heart attack. If this happens then please take your pet to your veterinarian as soon as possible.
