LARNACA REGION L o c a l - C o m m u n i t y - N e w s - E v e n t s - P e o p l e St Helena’s Autumn Fair On the afternoon of October 28th, in a beautiful garden in the heart of Larnaca, St. Helena’s Church held its Autumn Fair and it rained! It rained a lot! There was a cake stall groaning with all manner of home-made goodies, a craft stall with various gifts, a vintage ice-cream trike called Bertie selling delicious cones, English cream teas on the terrace, hot pork rolls, games for everyone, a huge tombola and a charity stall selling excellent clothes and wares, a puzzles and games stall, a Pimm’s stall, Grand Raffle, plus lots of other activities and stalls. All helped to make this Autumn Fair a memorable event! As well as all this, Claire Saul and Mick Allgood played some wonderful music as MACS Harmony, as people wandered around the garden (it all felt like an English Country Fair). Afterwards Oroklini Community Choir entertained the crowds with a repertoire of popular songs, until the heavens opened and it simply poured down. Even more like an English Country Fair! Despite the inclement weather, the Autumn Fair raised a grand total of €1.600. Everyone agreed that the hard work involved by members of the Church and their friends and families, was well worth it, a particularly good result! Helen Barrett Larnaca Community Writer

Home Requested This delightful young male cat is neutered, cuddly, lovable and has had a home from which I am sure someone reluctantly had to let him go. I found him in Pyla and he has been neutered on the Gov scheme. He knows about cat beds, litter trays etc and is too adorable to be put back where I found him.

The Water Tower Mosaic of the Community Council of Kition

Can you give him a caring home please? Tel.: 99935294

Kiti’s water tower was built in 1963 to supply water to the community, which until that time did not have a water supply system and forced the residents to use wells in their homes, as well as fountains that existed in various parts of the village. This water tower was used until 1990, when new water reservoirs were made at higher points to provide adequate water to all residents. It is currently used for irrigation of the greenery in the area and for the Community Stadium. The project started in October of last year and thanks to the efforts of creative residents the tower is now a jewel in the Community.

Oroklini Dog Show

Christmas Charity CD

Further to the very successful Dog Show held last year in Oroklini, another one was held on October 8th at the Restolake Restaurant.

Studio Severn is very proud to have recorded a very special Christmas Charity Album over the past few weeks.

There were many colourful stalls with crafts and jewellery, Christmas decorations, cakes, dog-related items etc. and lots of entertainment too. The main events were the dog show competitions. Many people had brought their pooches in to parade and take part in the competitions. This was a very difficult task, since the dogs were all winners in their own way! Some puppies and dogs were in cages just needing a good home. Everyone had a good time and €600 was raised for various organisations like Bay Tree, SOS, Paws 4 Homes, Cath & Iris (cats), Athienou Pound and others. The Auction for the handbag is still current. An excellent result! Well done to Louise Clark and everybody who was instrumental in organising the Dog Show and all those many people who attended on the day. Helen Barrett Larnaca Community Writer

Some of the acts that are still here in Cyprus for the winter season have got together and have contributed to the album which is on sale now. Acts involved are: Gareth Severn, Nick Garvey, Angela Allery, Peter Henstock, Angie Henstock, Eddie Russell, Ben Bateson, Natalie Reed, Rainy McPhillips Jr, Kristin Ferguson, Nicola Lambrianos, Olivia Dorrington, Alex Holt, Abs, Kath Severn and Alice J Carter. The Album will include many Christmas favourites with a few collaborations and all the acts come together to perform 'Do they know it’s Christmas'. The profits made on sales will be split between two chosen charities: Macmillan Cancer Support and Eleni's Dog Rescue. Copies will be €6 each and are available to pre-order now. Just contact Gareth Severn on Facebook for your copy or get your copy from the Daxi Information Center in Pernera. Make a small difference and please support this charitable Christmas CD.

The Final Figures Are In! As you are all aware Peter and Debbie Morton went sober for October to raise money for the pergola in the Garden Of Memories Appeal at Archangel Michael Hospice. We would like to thank each one of you that donated towards such an amazing cause. We raised €3,135 from all of your wonderful donations. We have now decided that Peter Morton Removals would like to pay for the pergola as a company at a cost of €2,130 and all the funds you kindly contributed will be given directly to the hospice. The overall total that we have all raised between us is €5,265. We couldn’t have done it without you all and we are so happy to be able to help such an amazing cause. Again thank you all! 7

The Mimosa Charity Cup The Mimosa Bowls Club held its annual Charity Cup on the 28th October. The event was sponsored as normal by Paralimni Municipality. It attracted 80 players from the five clubs on the Island. This year the comp was made of twenty teams of 4, split into 4 groups, with each team having players mixed from all the clubs. The winner of each group qualified for the Semi-Finals. The winners of group ‘A’ were the team of Bob Smith (Kiti), Pam Wilson (Mimosa), Chris Squirrell (Kama) and Derek Smith (Shogun). They played the winning team from Group ‘D’, Paul Jordan (Star), Jan Rigby (Mimosa), Colin Lawrence (Kama) and Janette McClean (Shogun). The latter won through to the final. In the other Semi - Final the team of Barrie Cole (Kiti), Chas Squirrell (Star), Mary Ferguson (Mimosa) and Rob Taylor (Shogun) overcame the team of Danny McClaren (Shogun), Mags Robertson (Mimosa), Val Cole (Kiti) and Peter Shaw (Mimosa Guest). The final was a high-class encounter which went down to the last bowl on the last end and was won by the team skipped by Paul Jordan of Star. The event raised €1,177 on the day, added to this figure is €1,053 from the weekly Charity Bingo held at the hotel making a final total of €2,230. Local Shots

Almost all bars and pubs in Cyprus stream British and European football matches to draw in tourists and expats alike, not to mention some Cypriots going in to see the games. However, there are local football teams such as Paralimni FC who West Ham supporters would go to see, as they play in the same colours. This came about years ago because a Cypriot brought back a West Ham kit which Paralimni FC liked. They contacted West Ham who donated the kit to the Cypriot team and it has been their home colours ever since. That said, there is no reason why all football supporters should not go to watch Paralimni or other local teams to see a live match from the terraces. On Saturday 4th November, Paralimni played lowly Chalkanoras who were bottom of the Cypriot Second Division with ‘nil points’ while Paralimni were fifth in the league with eleven points from six games. Support on the terraces was low compared to other games, possibly because not much was expected. However, many a team has come a cropper against the underdog who has been underestimated so Paralimni were wise to tread carefully, keeping possession rather than throwing all into attack. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute after Paralimni were awarded a penalty when the Chalkanoras’ goalkeeper brought down an attacker who had only him to beat. Another goal followed 9 minutes later and although there was a suggestion of offside, the linesman’s flag stayed down and the referee pointed to the centre spot. Paralimni were comfortable at 2:0 up at half time and the second half was a little flat, but they added a third goal in the 67th minute. Following that there were substitutions for both sides and a number of players that went down with cramp, suggesting fitness levels were not what they should be. As well as keeping a clean sheet, Paralimni were pleased with a win which took them to 4th in the league. As for Chalkanoras they battled hard and should take some consolation in having conceded only three goals. There are other local teams in the league such as Deryneia and Ayia Napa, and derby matches are often more fiercely contested. Otherwise, check the website to confirm that the next two home games listed for Paralimni are 9th of December against Zakakiou and 6th of January against Omonia Aradippou. Movie Review: Top 5 Christmas Movies It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) Frank Capra’s poignant fable, stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, a man with big ambitions (and a bigger heart) who defers his dream of leaving small-town Bedford Falls, but makes personal sacrifices that create a staggering ripple effect of inspirational goodwill on earth. He even helps an angel get his wings. Scrooged (1988) The movie is a Christmas comedy, a modernisation of Charles Dickens' ‘A Christmas Carol’. Frank Cross is an inconsiderate and arrogant executive in the IBC television network headquarters. He is preparing an extravagant live production of A Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve, forcing the network's staff, including his assistant Grace Cooley, to work on the holiday. Hours before the show starts, Frank is visited by the ghost of his mentor Lew Hayward, who announces that three ghosts will appear over the course of the night. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) That small-hearted villain from Mt. Crumpit goes down to Whoville for some seasonal spoiling, only to discover that Christmas cheer can never be stolen. Elf (2003) Now-iconic quotes like “We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup” sprouted from this Christmastime tale that, believe it or not, only came into our lives in 2003! Buddy (Will Ferrell) is raised as an innocent, wide-eyed Elf and he’s told way too late that he’s actually human. When he’s officially outgrown the North Pole, he’s sent to New York to live with his own kind. Love Actually (2003) The movie follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales, all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.

Song Review: White Christmas ‘White Christmas’ is a 1942 Irving Berlin song reminiscing about an old-fashioned Christmas setting. The first public performance of the song was by Bing Crosby, on his NBC radio show The Kraft Music Hall on Christmas Day, 1941. It was released on July 30 as part of an album of six 78-rpm discs from the musical film Holiday Inn. At first, Crosby did not see anything special about the song. He just said “I don't think we have any problems with that one, Irving”. The song initially performed poorly and was overshadowed by Holiday Inn's first hit song ‘Be Careful, It's My Heart’. By the end of October 1942, ‘White Christmas’ topped the Your Hit Parade chart. It remained in that position until well into the New Year. It has often been noted that the mix of melancholy – “just like the ones I used to know” - with comforting images of home – “where the treetops glisten” - resonated especially strongly with listeners during World War II. A few weeks after the attacks on Pearl Harbour, Crosby introduced ‘White Christmas’ on a Christmas Day broadcast. The Armed Forces Network was flooded with requests for the song. The recording is noted for Crosby's whistling during the second chorus. In 1942 alone, Crosby's recording spent eleven weeks on top of the Billboard charts. The version sung by Bing Crosby is the world's best-selling single with estimated sales in excess of 100 million copies worldwide. Other versions of the song, along with Crosby's, have sold over 150 million copies. 22

The important changes happening now affect how you see the world at a deep-down level and how you see the whole thing hanging together. You want to make the world a better place, but the way you go about this could do with some fine-tuning, for what is the point of rising to the top of the pile without a wider purpose? Don’t panic as inspiration will soon come your way.

There is quite a lot outstanding before you reach the ideal of freedom you seek, but all the necessary steps seem to happen of their own accord without apparent effort on your part. There is no use settling for a safe half-way house, nothing less than a complete overhaul of the way you operate is likely to satisfy. Take heart, for you are energised and have an end goal in sight.

If you have important plans to carry out, especially in close conjunction with a partner, either professionally or at play, then keeping your cards close is the way forward. People may not credit you with such a secret approach, but you have the chance to show them there are subtler shades in your personal palette.

People close to you hold the important cards this month, so forging friendly alliances points the way to success. This calls for all your consensus-building skills to come to the fore, not to mention some delicious match-making mischief you can throw into the mix. The 21st promises the most outstanding opportunities, when the earthy energy offsets your outspokenness and invests you with an enviable empathy.

With joyful Jupiter hitting all the right spots for you, there is a tempting table of opportunities before you. Sometimes it doesn’t take actual events to make your month, but you have the right blend of optimism and willpower to express yourself, reach out and make all the difference. Believing the best is often enough to bring it about, so this is a perfect time to make your own luck.

Sometimes you must wait for the right moment. You are not known as an assertive sort, but even more than usual, you can make your will prevail without others realising how you do it. Certainly, you have more than your fair share of charm, or it could be just an impression you create when you have plenty of time for people around you.

Before the 15th you may struggle to find the right approach to enlist others’ support. After the 17th, you ease into your stride and those closest to you approach with a more amiable attitude, sending your social credibility through the roof. Mars moving into alignment at the back end of the month further solidifies your standing and makes sure your year ends on the highest note.

Your desire to show a different side of yourself through a relationship is sure of success this month. You have the right intention, energy and approach to make sure no-one doubts you are a changed person. Freedom is what you are holding out for, but it’s hard to find someone to depend upon. Firing up your inner rebel is the ideal response and others can come onside as they may.

Libra, it’s your turn to try a taste of magic this month, as you arrive at a place that sets you apart from all others. Your horizons are broadened, your spirits lifted and the only way to treat yourself now is to think massive and go for the best. Make a deal with yourself and make this a time of sweet music and momentous memories.

You are not the sort to scream your intentions from the rooftops, nor give too much away if things aren’t going according to plan. Better to keep people guessing. However, it’s hard to keep your competitive streak secret now, so set are you on scoring points from rivals around you. You are making the most of your talents to be sure, and no-one can last the pace with your intensity.

You have the reputation of telling a thing how it is, with little regard for the wider consequences. However, you are showing exactly what a diplomat you can be this month. No-one thought you had what it took, but look at you now. You are proving what a polished performer you can be, posting a warning to people who presume to prejudge or pigeonhole you too soon.

Long distance runners talk about a point called ‘the wall’, which comes at the three quarters mark in a marathon. You have now reached this spot in your ambitions and if you can see your way through, your second wind is not far away, and you can finish strongly. You will look back on your experiences as teaching you what you truly desire, and not what you thought you wanted.

Kiti Close Up Kiti is a thriving village in the Larnaca District of Cyprus, located 11 km southwest of Larnaca. For those who have never been, although it is officially classed as a village, Kiti is packed with shops, restaurants, coffee shops, bars and supermarkets especially on its most prominent road Archiepiskopou Makariou Street, to such an extent that many would think it was a small town. The centre of Kiti features a beautiful pedestrianised area with quaint shops and a Gastro CafĂŠ Bar. It is estimated that Kiti has over 5,000 permanent residents but attracts thousands more during the warm tourist season from all over the world. Just outside Kiti are the surrounding villages of Pervolia, Menou and a little further afield the village of Mazatos, best known for its famous Camel Park.

Church of Angeloktisti

Located in Kiti Village is the 11th century Byzantine church of Angeloktisti which means ‘built by angels’ in Greek and was erected over the ruins of an Early Christian basilica (6th century). The original apse of the basilica has survived along with one of the finest pieces of Byzantine art on the island; a rare 6th century mosaic of the Virgin Mary and Child between the two archangels Michael and Gabriel, which rivals the mosaics of Ravenna-Italy. Such mosaics from this period have only been discovered in Cyprus and Mount Sinai.

Pom-Pom Christmas Buddies Christmas is definitely a time for warm and fuzzy feelings, so I wanted to come up with a warm and fuzzy craft to match. Something that makes you feel warm at winter time, is wool and there’s not many things more fuzzy than a pom-pom, hence the idea for these lovely little characters. What you will need: White Wool Cardboard (I used an empty cereal box) Scissors Googly eyes Felt (red and pink) Mini white store bought pom-pom How to do it: 1) Start by cutting out two matching ‘C’ shaped cardboard pieces 2) Cut a piece of wool about 20cm in length and place it between your cardboard pieces. 3) Starting from one end of your cardboard start wrapping your wool around both pieces making sure to keep your cut length in between the cut outs and wraps at all times. 4) Once you have completely wrapped your cardboard cut-outs take the ends of your centre piece and tie them together pulling them a little tight and then start to cut around the outer edge of the wrapped pieces. 5) Once you have cut all the way around pull the centre wool really tight, pull all the cut lengths together and then tie it in a knot to hold it. 6) Fluff up your pom-pom and trim any unlevelled pieces of wool to make a neat sphere. 7) Using your red felt make a cone shape and stick the mini pom-pom on the top point and then cut a small oval out of the pink felt. 8) Stick your cone on the top of your pom-pom as a hat and the pink oval front and centre as a nose. Finally stick on your googly eyes. Say hello to your Father Christmas Pom-Pom Buddy! You can then do the same process to create new buddies like the reindeer, or even a snowman or Christmas pudding! Have fun and wishing you all a warm and fuzzy Christmas! Written by Sam Barnes. Sam Barnes is primarily a stay at home mum of two, who has loved crafting for many years. What is the Difference Between an Osteopath, Chiropractor and a Physiotherapist? To be able to understand the differences between them, you must also understand the similarities. This information is based on UK sources as their professional bodies have been established for several years. In Cyprus, some are still in their infancy years. All three professions examine, diagnose, form management protocols, treat problems with joints, bones, soft tissue, muscles and nerves by looking at the function of your body as a whole. Chiropractors have a special interest in neck and back pain, but when they assess their patient they take their entire physical, emotional and social wellbeing into account. Chiropractors specialise in the art of manipulation, with a view to normalise neuromuscular-skeletal function, as it relates to the spine and the function of the nervous system and general health. So, a Chiropractor will manipulate the spine which will cause a ripple effect out to the presenting symptoms. Physiotherapy aims to restore movement and function to the fullest potential when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. The profession helps to encourage development and facilitate recovery, enabling people to stay in work while helping them to remain independent for as long as possible. Physiotherapists achieve this through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice, helping patients to manage pain and prevent disease. They specialise in the diagnosis, management and prevention of movement disorders with an aim to rehabilitate and improve a person's ability to move and function by using their expertise in anatomy and physiology to assess and treat people with a range of health conditions. They set and prescribe exercises to help with a patient’s presenting symptoms. Osteopathy works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues and to help the body’s own healing mechanisms. This is achieved by considering symptoms in the context of the patient's full medical history, lifestyle and personal circumstance and via a range of techniques, such as joint manipulation, articulation, soft / deep tissue techniques and often acupuncture. Advice on posture and exercise to address potential barriers to recovery is regularly provided too. Although some elements are similar, the outcome can be vast, so if you have a problem and it is not responding to the treatment plan perhaps you could try a different approach, you may be pleasantly surprised.

The Whole World, in Your Hands As the name implies, a 360-degree camera captures the entire world around it. If you are thinking about buying one, you should first think about what you are going to use it for. Some models feature rugged, all-weather designs and fit also solidly in the action cam category. They are designed to be mounted on the top of a helmet, the front of a kayak, or a bike. If your needs aren't so outdoorsy, you can opt for a model that isn't rugged and likely save some money. The least expensive models are very small and plug directly into a smartphone, but quality isn't on the same level as cameras with large lenses and image sensors.

4K or not 4K? - We are used to seeing small camcorders capture 4K footage, a

format that squeezes 8MP of detail in each frame. Our favourite 360-degree cameras also shoot in 4K, but those pixels aren't limited to a 16:9 video frame. Instead they are stretched out across a sphere. When you couple the stretched-out view with the ultra-wide nature of 360-degree capture, you will notice that video looks soft, more like traditional 480p or 720p video, especially when viewing objects that are far away from the lenses. Models that shoot video at 2K resolution when stitched together for viewing, simply don't offer enough pixels to deliver the video quality that a generation of videographers weaned on HD capture are used to. There is also the question of whether you are more interested in still imaging or video. The vast majority of 360 devices are designed as video cameras that also shoot stills.

Stitching and Editing - As 360-degree cameras use multiple lenses to capture a scene, video must be stitched together to view it. Sometimes this is done in-camera, and other times you will need to use software to do so. Viewing Footage: Screens and Goggles - The rise of inexpensive Virtual Reality Headsets has certainly driven the desire to capture immersive 360-degree footage, so you can view in a headset and navigate through by turning your head. It is too early to tell if this method of content consumption is here to stay, or simply a fleeting fad. Immersive video and images can also be viewed on a traditional screen, be it phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. YouTube and Facebook allow you to embed videos and navigate through them with a mouse, or by tilting your phone in different directions. Facebook also lets you upload 360-degree pictures (YouTube doesn't), but if you want to share them without giving folks access to your Facebook profile, you can use a free hosting service like Vizor. Prices - There are many models on the market and their prices range from a few hundred Euros to almost a thousand. Do not expect miraculous performance from the cheapest ones. Prepare Your Car for Long Term Storage After a long summer, winter is coming to our beautiful island. Whether you are leaving the island for holidays, work or visiting family away, you’ll need to prepare your car for the time you’re away. Here are some tips to make sure you don’t return to a dead battery, damaged engine or ruined tyres. Keep It Covered Ideally a garage is the perfect place to store your car but as we all know in Cyprus garages are a rarity. So consider getting an all-weather car cover that will keep your car clean and dry. Clean It Up It may seem counterintuitive to get the car washed when you're putting it away for months, but it is an easy step and one that shouldn't be overlooked. Water stains or bird droppings left on the car can damage the paint. For added protection, give your car a polish and wax. Change the Oil Manufacturers recommend that if you are storing your car for more than 30 days, you should change the oil, as used engine oil has contaminants that could damage the engine. Top Off the Tank Fill the fuel tank if you are away for more than 30 days. This will prevent moisture from accumulating inside the fuel tank and keep the seals from drying out. To protect the engine from gum, varnish and rust, you can buy a fuel stabiliser to prevent ethanol build-up. Keep It Charged An unattended battery will eventually lose its charge. Get someone to start the car every two weeks and drive it for about 15 minutes, if possible. It will maintain the battery's charge, help the car ‘stretch its legs’ and keep the engine and other components properly lubricated. It is also a good idea to run the air-conditioner to keep the parts in working order and the air quality fresh. If you cannot arrange for someone to start the car, there are two other options. The low-tech solution is to disconnect the negative battery cable. You'll likely lose the stereo pre-sets, time and other settings. If you want to keep those settings and ensure that your battery starts the moment you return, purchase a battery tender, also known as a trickle charger. This device hooks up to your car battery on one end and plugs into a wall outlet on the other. It delivers just enough electrical power to prevent the battery from discharging. Don't Use the Parking Brake It's usually a good idea to use the parking brake, but don't do it when you leave a car for storage. If the brake pads make contact with the rotors for too long, there is a chance that they might fuse. Instead, purchase a tyre stopper, also called a chock, to prevent the car from moving. Prevent Flat Spots Make sure your tyres are inflated to the recommended tyre pressure. If a vehicle is left stationary for too long, the tyres could develop flat spots as the weight of the vehicle presses down on the tyres' footprints. This process occurs at a faster rate in colder temperatures and with vehicles equipped with performance tyres or low-profile tyres. If your car will be in storage for a long time, consider taking the wheels off and placing the car on axel stands at all four corners. 44

RECIPES - FOOD - DRINKS - INGREDIENTS - TIPS

Traditional Christmas Pudding Christmas holidays are just around the corner, so what would be more appropriate to cook, than a traditional Christmas Pudding? INGREDIENTS (Serves 8) 500g mixed dried fruit (such as cranberries, cherries, apricots, sultanas and raisins) 100g dates, chopped up 3 tablespoons chopped crystallised ginger 125g suet zest of 1 orange 125g plain flour 125g caster sugar 150g fresh white breadcrumbs 2 tablespoons Vin Santo or brandy 1 handful chopped nuts, such as pecans, Brazils or hazelnuts 1 medium free-range egg 150ml milk golden syrup, to serve METHOD Grease a 1.5 litre pudding bowl. Mix all the ingredients together, except the golden syrup. Put the mixture into the greased bowl and cover with a double layer of aluminium foil. Tie a piece of string round the side of the bowl. Place in a large saucepan with water halfway up the sides of the bowl. Bring the water to the boil, put on a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 3 hours. Don’t forget to check the water regularly, making sure that it never boils dry, because if it does, it will burn and the bowl will crack. When it’s ready, remove the foil, turn out on to a plate, drizzle with golden syrup and decorate it as you like. You can also light it with brandy if you want to be really fancy.

Winter Draws On! Not knowing whether to trust forecasts on my phone (probably not) and not being acquainted with a local farmer or fisherman who could probably tell me straight away, at this stage I don’t know whether we ’ll get a warm winter or a cold one. But on the basis that being prepared is not just confined to my Girl Guide days, it’s best to be ahead of the game in terms of heating. After just one winter of using portable gas stoves, we vowed never again. Yes, they were pretty efficient, but we couldn’t be doing with the smell or the condensation, particularly as houses here seem to be poorly ventilated, and we all have enough damp problems as it is. There weren’t many alternatives 15 years ago but there are some great electric heaters available now. Halogen may be cheap as chips, but buying a super-efficient heater with a low running cost would be a great investment for this winter and many more to come. (If you have a stove or a fireplace, lucky you!) Whatever method of heating you have, have a think about investing in thicker winter curtains, even if you have shutters. There are curtain rails available at Ikea, and maybe nearer, which allow 2 or even 3 sets of curtains to be hung at one time – you could have curtain double or triple glazing! If possible, hang a curtain at the bottom of the stairs – it’s just amazing how much heat that keeps in. Find a thick rug for the floor under the dining table, big enough for all the chairs when you’re seated, and this will stop the tiles robbing the heat from your feet even with shoes on. Same goes for rugs in front of settees and chairs. Feeling warm is, strangely enough, also visual. At this time of year, and with Christmas coming, you can warm up the ambience of your living rooms by changing cushions, throws and even pictures. The decorations may come down in January, but you’ll still have a nice warm feeling room. Of course, it does help a great deal if your house is properly insulated, and the standard building method of terracotta brick infill is very inefficient. When you consider that good insulation actually helps to keep the heat out in summer as well conserving it in winter, it’s surprising that timber frame construction is not more popular here. But if you’re looking to buy a new, properly insulated house and fancy a place in the country, you might take a look at a timber frame development at Avgorou – it even has pale brick facings and bay windows. Opuntia Ficus-indica This species of cactus is a well-known domesticated crop that many of us call the ‘prickly pear’. It is an important agricultural crop which also grows in the wild in most parts of Cyprus. Over the last months I have noticed a real problem amongst the cacti growing along the tracks where I walk my dog. First of all I thought someone had been spraying them but sadly to say they are all dying covered in a white fungus or it might even be mealybug. It is a huge problem as it has affected plants all over this area. It is not easily treated because the majority of the affected plants are wild and will be left to die. Insecticides can be used as well as just soapy water if caught early enough. With this problem, it is very possible that it will spread to other plants, such a citrus trees and hibiscus and if this happens it could affect all of our gardens as well as farmers’ crops. I will make a point of informing the local municipal to make them aware of the problem. Thanks to Ginny Malloy of the Potting Shed for supplying us with this information. In addition to supplying plants, succulents & cacti, they also deliver fresh bouquets of flowers around the Famagusta region. Tel: 96532138. Visit: www.agapanthusflowershop.com. SALES - RENTALS - DEEDS - MORTGAGES - LEGALITY - ADVICE

Highlights of 2017 Dear Daxi Readers, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the whole Island Homes team! It is hard to believe that Christmas is just a couple of weeks away; it has been a very busy year for the property industry so the year has passed in a blur. Of course, this is as we would wish it and it is great to be able to report that 2017 is the year the tide has turned. The downturn lasted almost 10 years, an exceptionally long time by any standard but we are excited about the future and looking forward to a sustained period of growth! Property Sales to November 1st 2017 - Property sales (completions) in Cyprus had increased by 19% compared to 2016. Larnaca sales have actually dropped by 8% during the period but Famagusta sales have increased 23% year on year. In our experience, the actual amount of reserved properties (deposit paid) has increased approximately 30% in Famagusta region year on year and it is approximately 5% up in Larnaca. Immoveable Property Tax - Has been abolished for the year 2017 and the foreseeable future. Title Deed Transfers - Have increased significantly this year and the rate of issuance has also improved significantly. VAT on Land - Has been imposed from the 2nd January 2018 which will have some impact on the prices of new developments but is designed only for commercial sales. If an individual who is not VAT registered sells a small plot of land he will not be affected. Prices Have Increased - According to the latest official sources by between 2-3% depending on the property and location. Sale of New and Off Plan - Property has more than doubled this year. These types of sales are hugely important to the economy as they bring work to thousands of people and also affect the local economies with all of the add-ons involved in a new sale such as landscaping, furniture, services etc. I think you will agree we have a lot to look forward to next year and we warmly anticipate working with you in 2018. Have a fantastic Christmas!

Communal Property Advice While there are many benefits to owning a property in an apartment building, development or resort, there are also additional concerns. This is why it’s essential when purchasing property with communal facilities, that you properly understand the unique aspects relating to communal property ownership. This Issue: Self - Management vs Professional Management Fortunately, this is no longer an either / or decision. Only a few years ago you effectively had two choices, to use a property manager to fully manage your building or do it all in-house. Now the industry has evolved, as many property managers will offer custom services to perform specific key tasks and work with an active committee, who deals with other tasks directly. Maybe you are lucky enough to have an admin king / queen on the committee, so all the back-end stuff you can keep in house, but you want to benefit from having a property manager available 24-hours a day to deal with maintenance, or you want to hire a property manager to cover every and all aspects of the administration and management of your building from A-Z so all the committee need to do is supervise and check the reports. The choice is now yours. You need to find out what balance you want. How many and what specific tasks do you want to keep in-house and what do you need to hire out to a professional? Note: Self-management does not always = cost savings! Providing there are individuals on the committee with suitable experience and skills to perform the necessary tasks and most importantly are willing to devote their time to perform these tasks, keeping some or all of these tasks in-house can save the building a significant sum in professional management fees. However, if these individuals do not exist on the committee, choosing self-management can have serious side effects. The most common reason I find for buildings self-managing is not because they can do everything in-house but because they have financial problems and are trying to save money. If this is the case, then self-management is NOT the solution. It’s a dangerous trap with potentially devastating consequences. Most of these scenarios end up with individuals without enough time, knowledge of the regulations and / or experience dealing with essential tasks like credit control and administration. This can result in inconsistent services, unstable committees, lower collection rates and all the financial problems it creates. Once this stage is reached you can recover, but it takes an extremely long time, so it’s best to take every effort to stop this from happening in the first place. While it may seem contradictory to spend money on a property professional when you are already experiencing funding options, this can be financially beneficial due to increased payment rates and operational efficiencies. Plus, many providers offer communal collection services on a fixed percentage with a no-collection no-fee policy. So, while the choice is now yours, it’s never been more important to make an informed one. 56

If the child has Cypriot nationality and one of the parents is Cypriot, you only need to fill the child benefit form in once and it will be paid automatically each year until the child is 18. Pet of the Month

This month we are featuring a mother and her small puppy. They were both abandoned outside the offices of the Government Vet in October 2017. The mother, Queenie, is a small Chihuahua/Terrier cross who measures just 27cm to shoulder height. She is a tiny dog and would be perfect for any household. The vet estimates she was born in December 2014. Princess, her puppy, is really tiny and only about 14 weeks old. She is white and is the most beautiful little girl. She is friendly, good with people and loves to be cuddled. They both arrived at the Argos Sanctuary in October 2017 and they quickly won the hearts of all staff and volunteers. Queenie and her puppy can be seen at Argos Animal Sanctuary, Ormideia, which is open 7 days a week from 11am until 3:30pm. Or telephone Julia on 99599240 for any information about Queenie or Princess or if you want to adopt a dog or cat.

Hello Daxi friends, With Christmas just around the corner I wanted to remind you that the best gift ever is the gift of life and love. The perfect Christmas gift is to adopt a stray dog. Once upon a time there were a FEW thoughtless people who dumped their dogs and abandoned them anywhere. One day a group of people heard about the stray dogs and decided to open a dog shelter for these few dogs. At the beginning, there were a few stray dogs and then a few more stray dogs. A couple of months later many more stray dogs. Suddenly dozens of stray dogs dumped everywhere. Hang on a minute! What’s going on here? Stray dogs all over the place! There were dogs dumped at the shelter or left on the street on an everyday basis. What happened? The answer is simple my friends. The few thoughtless people turned into many thoughtless people because it had dawned on them that they wouldn’t feel guilty if they dumped or abandoned their pet because thanks to this dog shelter it will be taken care of. These people did not care or stop to think what would happen to a dog once it’s in the pound. There is limited space and facilities at the shelter. The shelter is funded by charity events. Many dogs might never get rehomed and have to live in small crammed cages with little human contact. The shelter is run by volunteers that donate their time but still have daily jobs to go to and families to take care of. So please make it a wonderful Christmas for a stray dog by giving it a loving forever home as a present. HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!
