The Cake Shop In The Garden
The Mummy
Author: Carole Matthews
Released: June 2017
Fay Merryweather lives with her bedridden mother Miranda in The Canal House where she also runs a little cafe called Fay's Cakes. She has a partner of ten years, Anthony, who is hardly the attentive type and a sister, Edie, who lives in New York and expects Fay to fund her lifestyle whilst she doesn't work. Fay just loves to help everyone and is used by Miranda, Anthony and Edie.
The plot follows a treasure hunting soldier Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) and his friend Chris (Jake Johnson) being caught in the middle of a battle in Iraq, only to discover a hidden buried tomb.
Along comes a canal boat, The Dreamcatcher, with the handsome Danny Wilde on board and Fay's life tumbles into turmoil. Can Fay make a life changing decision? My favourite character had to be the brilliant, Lija, who is Fay’s assistant in the café. She had me laughing on many occasions with her colourful language and brilliant outlook on life. It’s a wonderful story about love, life, family and not to mention cake!

This brings the attention of the military and archaeologist Jenny (Annabelle Wallis) who wants to bring the tomb back to London to study it. Only to unravel the tomb of princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) who was mummified after she murdered her father and his new born for being the next in line to the throne. She awakens to release evil in the world and wants to resurrect a god of death. This is a remake from the Mummy franchise and is the first instalment of the Dark Universe film series from 1932.

Time to Dream in a Hammock August is not exactly a month for doing much, is it? Far better to grab a couple of minutes – well hours perhaps – swinging gently in a hammock and dreaming about updating, transforming or simply titivating our homes when we get some energy back. The thing about dreaming is that you can dream big, and you really never know what might come of it; just let your imagination run riot dreaming about all the things you could do with….tiles. Tiles?! Well, tiles are not just your boring everyday moppable, wipeable, practical necessities. This is what Topps Tiles (a UK chain of stores previously more noted for ultra-low prices than style statements) had to say in their recent ad in up-market Elle Deco magazine: “Take tiling. Once seen as little more than a practical option for kitchens and bathrooms, to contemporary interiors it is a design hero in and of itself.” Bravo Topps – tiling is a design hero! I wouldn’t restrict it to contemporary interiors either; any type of interior or exterior deserves a (more or less) permanent design statement. Many Mediterranean houses have tiled exteriors so how about one wall, or feature, of your house? OK, so your tiles won’t last as long as the mosaics in Paphos, but if you are replacing a floor, you could put an inset ‘tile rug’ where it could show itself off best, or find a striking design for the whole floor so that it complements your furnishing style instead of sitting quietly as a background. If it’s inspiration you need, just look at the feature walls and fireplace surrounds in Popham Design’s ‘Gallery’, and Heath Ceramics ‘Tile & Build’ – or check out Fired Earth, who are still my tile heroes since I first fell in love with them in the mid-eighties. Or Pinterest: door surrounds, window reveals and sills, backs of shelves and alcoves (up-lit), bedheads, friezes, wall panels, pictures, garden wall features …. Yes, the imagination is running riot! And let’s not forget one of the heroes of Mid Century Design (something of a strange concept to any of us who actually lived in the 50’s to 70’s, I have to say): the tiled coffee table. If you still have one of those tables sporting wet glass rings, peeling veneer or ciggy burns, now’s the time to do some really up-market up-cycling with a totally unique design of your own. You never know, it might even become a family heirloom. Kindly Written by Corinne Twining - Interior Designer. Compost Corner - Painted Stone Garden Markers
Every now and then I receive a text or an e-mail asking if I can identify a plant that someone has come across either in their garden or in the wild. This time a photograph was sent to me on Instagram.
Painting stones or pebbles to make garden plant markers is a great fun project to do and it can add a splash of colour to the garden as well as being useful.
The photo was taken in the woods beside a fishing lake in Burnley England. Usually a plant of this variety is found in the rain forests where there is high humidity, damp and warmth, so to be found in the cold grey damp of woods in England was very unusual and especially in April. The plant was Arisaema. This arum-like plant is not easy to find and is expensive to buy, the area where it was found growing was a moist woodland. The flowers have a large tube (the spathe) which surrounds the pencil like spandex. They appear in May - June and in the late summer they have brightly coloured berries.
Find a nice sized stone, not too big, smooth rock or pebble. Then using acrylic paint, paint the name of the plant on the stone or pebble and also paint a picture of the plant. You can even paint the whole stone a colour before adding the name, or you could just paint some stones or pebbles in assorted colours and paint onto them a pair of eyes just to use as garden ornaments.

SALES - RENTALS - DEEDS - MORTGAGES - LEGALITY - ADVICE
Half Year Sales Report We are delighted to report that finally the property market is on an upward curve after almost 10 years of negative growth! We have been reporting for some time that there has been a growing interest in Cyprus property and the facts are beginning to bear this out. All of the local offices are reporting increased viewing activity both locally and abroad and the pipeline of active sales is growing nicely. Overall sales are up across Cyprus by 20% for the first six months of the year compared to 2017. Eastern Cyprus has fared less well but we expect this to reverse in the second half of the year and show significant growth. Famagusta Region
Sales in Famagusta are 6% up year on year with foreign buyers accounting for just over 26% of all sales compared to 25% last year. Larnaca Region
Year to date sales in Larnaca are disappointing, almost 9% down on the same period last year but the percentage of sales to foreign buyers are up from 22% to 27%. Property Prices All three of our recognised property indices (RICS, Central Bank of Cyprus and the House price index) are reporting growth in prices. Larnaca, Limassol and Nicosia are leading the increases but we are also experiencing small increases in the Famagusta region mainly led by the Coastal properties and villas with Title Deeds available. It is true that the market runs in cycles but this has been one of the longest cycles in living history! There are several long promised projects now under way, tourism is at an all time high and the economy is growing well. Banks are once again lending under sensible but strict criteria and we are attracting the ‘right’ kind of investment. We go into the second half of 2017 feeling extremely positive!

Communal Property Advice While there are many benefits to owning a property in a communal building, development or resort, there are also additional concerns. Your fellow owners and neighbours become part of your investment, almost as if they were indirect partners. They can negatively affect your investment as much as a bad business partner can affect a business. This is why it’s essential when purchasing property with communal facilities that you properly understand the unique aspects relating to communal property ownership.
Do you have any questions you would like answered about the above article, or looking for FREE expert advice on the many aspects of Communal Property Ownership? Visit the online resource with advice and information on all aspects of Apartment and Communal property ownership www.CyprusCommunalGuide.com or email advice@CyprusCommunalGuide.com
If you missed it, in last month’s article I discussed the core question - what is communal property? In this article, I will discuss the sticky subject of alterations to Apartments.
Want to view the complete set of regulations? A high resolution, indexed copy of the Property Regulations can be downloaded at www.Download-IPA.com or on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06WLPZG35/
This issue: Alterations to Apartments This is a subject that I get asked about a lot. Someone will contact me through the advice website with a question like “My neighbor has enclosed their balcony”, or “They have painted their balcony Green”, “Are they allowed to do this?”. As in the intro to every article, the first thing to understand is that when you buy an apartment you have a shared investment with your neighbors. What you do affects them, and what they do affects you. Buildings are built to a particular style and aesthetic, and while people have individual taste or style this should be limited to inside the properties only. When you drive around and see a building that looks more like a Favela as some balconies are enclosed with different materials and outsides are painted different colours, it not only makes the building look unsightly, it can also damage the value of the property for resale, or rental. Because of this the regulations are very strict to protect people and their property investment. These regulations state that no owner can make any alteration to their property that: • Shall prejudice the rights of the owner of any other unit or interfere with its enjoyment by the owner of the other unit; • Shall affect in any way the jointly-owned property, its smooth functioning or its enjoyment; • Shall in any way affect the walls supporting the jointly-owned property and its external walls, shall endanger in any way the safety of the jointly-owned property or shall affect its external appearance. Failure to follow this section is a breach of the law, and the committee can and should act to restore the property including legal action for damages/costs involved. It’s important to take action immediately, a notice to terminate works or restore the property via a lawyer, or even an injunction from the court should this be ignored. 50

Cooking With John and Petra - Crabstick Salad Petra my barmaid who not only makes the best cocktails and coffees on the island but loves to cook and create in the kitchen as well, came up with this salad for the staff as they were all saying it was too hot to eat. A quick and easy delicious salad and cheap as well. You can throw this salad together in minutes and it is also good for buffets, as a starter or just a nice salad to be enjoyed on the patio while taking in the summer breeze and remembering why you came to Cyprus. Why not add a nice cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc?
Ingredients: 16 pieces of crabstick 1 big red onion 1 tin of sweet corn 160gms (open and drain corn) 1 medium carrot Sauce: 2 tablspns of mayonnaise 1 tablspn of olive oil Juice of 1 lemon Salt and white pepper to season
Method: Dice your crabstick, carrot and red onion into long thin strips, sometimes if you rub your crabstick between the palms of your hands it separates into long strips, it depends on the brand. Place into a bowl and add the sweetcorn, if you don’t like corn leave it out. Mix your other ingredients in a separate bowl, only add half the lemon juice and season very little, mix well and taste. If you think it needs more lemon or seasoning add a little more to suit your taste, then mix both bowls together, chill and serve.

Living the Dream Hello my ‘Living the Dreamers’. I hope you are all well and drinking plenty.
Dark Eyed Gypsy Girls
In my last blog I sounded like a moany old crab! So, I've decided to get my act together and start my day with a smile. It’s a bit hard to get out of bed when the bones are stiff! Well anyway I open the doors, smile and say out loud "Good morning Cyprus." After 2 cups of tea and 9 vitamins I'm raring to go! Well... my new regime starts.
Tagged along with a wandering star, heading South to Saintes Maries de la Mer
I'm starting to do an Aqua aerobics class in my home so I go and practice. That done I continue. In my first blog I told you gardening ain't my thing but you'll never guess, I'm a Busy Lizzie queen and they are thriving and NOT dying (my friends know every plant I have had has died). I hope they last the summer.
Found myself horse whispering some dark eyed gypsy girls
It's my dear Husband’s Birthday so I'm taking him to the restaurant of his choice, so where are we going, KFC? My friend came to Cyprus (Limassol) and promptly tripped and fell injuring her face and knee poor girl. Be careful when you walk, keep looking down (but don't walk into a post!) You know those humps in the roads are driving me mad, apart from making everything wobble I'm sure my car is suffering. Can I sue the council? I looked in the mirror today, I don't look often only to do the hair regime (or the face) and for the first time I have to admit I'm getting OLD. It's tough to say cos my head is 34 but apart from things going south now it's the FACE. Why does it drop? Couldn't I drag it all up and put it on the top of my head with a bow? Now the eyes have wrinkles and bags, I've got the lot BUT I've got the answer as I wear glasses. I just get the lenses darker every year so no one can see my eyes, the only problem is it's midnight permanently! Ok my children I'm now going to watch that good old programme ‘Plastic DIY’. Take care Keep laughing Keep living the dream Laraine Passes xxx Every month we will feature the best creative writing and poems sent in by our readers. skipping out in nature’s yard where summer is long deep in the Carmargue Chestnut mares and white stallions, piebald ponies swift as wind
In hullabaloos on endless days, running wild like waifs and strays Drinking out of wishing wells, telling fortunes cooking up spells Black Sarah grant your favours here and bless this old star struck musketeer My flames raised to spark up so bright while those dusky maidens danced and swayed Campfire story telling late at night in that unique old Roma way Encircling me they bade me sing, along with their accordion and violins Songs of virtue, songs of sin, about my dark eyed gypsy girls Then when the late flamingos all have flown with herons high across the Rhone I’ll bid them au revoir as I head for home. Goodbye my sweet dark eyed gypsy girls by Clive Gardner

Larnaca Fun This is an unintentional flashback piece as it is all about a day out about a year ago. Anyway, I think it was not long after the children finished school for the summer and in hindsight it wasn't the best time of year for such a day out, it was far too hot to really enjoy it properly. I'd wanted to go to Larnaca Fort for years, I've driven past it many times and almost visited it on several occasions but for various reasons we'd never got around to it. I always assumed it wouldn't hold the boys’ attention for long and so it was just one of those 'one day' things. It was nice to see the views from the top and take my own versions of photos I've been seeing for years online. Leo was fascinated by the view and stood pretending there were invaders approaching, shouting instructions at the others to hold them back! We were only at the fort an hour or so, but they enjoyed it. Mainly exploring the courtyard and the views from the top rather than the mini museum but I'd say that's quite expected for kids. From the Fort, we headed to Larnaca Municipal Gardens, heading straight for the shade to sort out our picnic as it was roasting hot. We let the kids run off to the play area, only to have them come straight back as all the equipment was too hot to touch. Huddled together in the limited shade we ate our picnic and then discovered a zip line, it was decided that was worth braving the heat for a while so everyone had a go. I noticed a building in the centre of the park which we were surprised to discover was a Natural History Museum. I had very low expectations of it, knowing what places can be like in Cyprus and assuming if it was any good I'd have heard of it. But when we discovered it was 50 cents to get in we thought it was worth a look and it was. It's not a huge place but it is crammed full of things to look at and had the best and most welcome air conditioning we'd ever found - as we stood under one of the aircon units we said that it was the best 50 cents we'd ever spent! Suitably cooled, we ventured back into the park for a bit before heading to our final treat of the day. We went to Fun Factory for the first time and they all had a great time playing - this time inside, in the air conditioning with lots of cool water to drink. It was a long day enjoyed by everyone. It must be time to sort out another road trip to some new places by now!

Pet of the Month This months hopeful doggy is called Jane. She was born in approximately 2014 and is a Pinscher mix. Her height to shoulder is 37cm so a reasonably small dog which is easy to handle and does not take much room up on the sofa! She is such an easy going little girl with a lot of love to give. Jane does not particularly like cats, to her they are something to chase but other dogs are no problem and people she absolutely adores. Jane is fully vaccinated and spayed and is waiting patiently for a new home at Argos Sanctuary in Ormideia. Hi Everybody! Hope you’re all enjoying the summer. I thought it would be nice to do something different today. So here are a few weird facts about animals that you probably didn’t know. The lovely long necked Flamingo can only eat when its head is upside down! Is this right? Do they catch fish and then eat it upside down? I always thought it just slithered down their throats! Here’s something very bizarre! Cows only eat when they are facing North or South! What? I tried to find out the reason for this but no one knows for sure why. If a female ferret goes into heat and doesn’t mate straight away she becomes so dramatised by the thought of rejection that she might just curl up and die! I don’t want to seem mean but I actually laughed out loud when I read this one! Turtles have favourite colours. Turtles rely on sight instead of smell to guide them to their food. They do not have a strong sense of smell. However, most people think that their favourite colour is probably green but it’s not, turtles are drawn to red and orange colours. Dolphins sleep with half their brain awake. This is because they are slightly alert so that they can come up to the sea surface for air every so often. When threatened by other species Tarantula spiders can actually tear off the hairs from their legs and throw or spit them at its attackers eyes so that it gives it enough time to make its escape. So never try to look a tarantula in the eye or you will get a fist full of hair spat at you! I hope you enjoyed these .. if you did send in an e mail and I’ll do some more. To be honest I personally really enjoyed finding out all these weird things. Have a fantastic summer everyone!
