Friend's Skydive Raises €800 for Motor Neurone Disease In 2011 I was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND). In 2016 my sister Stevi (Stephanie) and my family arranged a tandem skydive for me for my 60th Birthday. It was an amazing day made extra special with a surprise visit off my long time mate Tina from the UK and this prompted Tina and Stevi to go for it too! They decided to raise as much money as they could for the MND Association (MNDA). Last Saturday 30th September Stevi and Tina did the tandem skydive at the Cyprus CCSPC. What a brilliant experience! Everyone at the club was so helpful and friendly and so far we have raised almost €800 for a really worthy cause. Stevi says, "When Shan was diagnosed with MND it was a life changing event for both of us and definitely not the retirement we were both looking forward to. But she is a trooper. She did a skydive for her Birthday last year which was an amazing day and Tina and I decided then that we would do the jump ourselves to raise money for the MND charity. This is a hateful illness and we need to find a cure so hopefully the money we have raised will help. Big thanks to everyone who was involved and who has donated so far. We are still a bit short of our €1000 target so if anyone else would like to help us our JustGiving page is below Shan continued...MND is a hateful illness whereby you quickly, or as in my case slowly, lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, write, etc with the eventual loss of being able to do anything for yourself. For people living with MND every fundraising event, be it a head shave, run, bake sale, quiz night or skydive offers hope. Hope that their needs will be recognised by society, hope that standards of care will continue to improve and, above all, that one day a cure will be found. The MNDA vision is a world free from MND. Every donation makes a difference to a person living with MND. The MNDA ensures that every pound they receive is spent carefully so that people affected by MND get the help they need, both now and in the future. Good ‘Cyprus Friends’ - Good Company! About a year ago, I wrote an article for Daxi about a group which has been formed by Joe and Cynthia Sweeney for people with Alzheimers or dementia to meet together with carers for company and fun. The sessions, if you remember, are held at Terra Santa every fortnight on a Wednesday morning and have been well-attended by patients and carers too. The sessions have a great beneficial effect, as people re-discover ‘lost’ talents and interests and react to the welcome stimulation. Now, a new additional session is held on alternate Wednesdays to the Terra Santa sessions – it is at The Oasis (St. George’s Care Home) and this is at 3pm in the afternoon. It is likely that a music interlude will be introduced during this afternoon session, too. Also, it was soon obvious that an additional group for patients who are just in the early stages of dementia was called for – a session which was aimed just for them. Consequently, Joe and Cynthia decided to set up such a group and invited me along to meet everyone. They meet at a restaurant called ‘Epilogi’ on a Friday morning, every fortnight. Carers are encouraged to stay for the session if they prefer. The session was such fun! Everyone was in a jolly frame of mind and happy taking part in a quiz together. Then, after coffee and some delicious cake. There was a singalong for everybody and this went down well, you could see people remembering songs from days gone by as well as some more recent ones. We all had a good time, and everybody left with a big smile on their face. So, if you would like to join this Friday group – or the other two Wednesday groups at Terra Santa or The Oasis – do please get in touch with Joe on 24811225 or email him on bbaltd@btinternet.com or Cynthia Sweeney on cynthia.sweeney2@gmail.com. Also, any volunteers who would like to go along and help out at either the Wednesday session at Terra Santa or the new one at Epilogi, please contact Joe and either he or Cynthia would be very pleased to speak to you. Joe and Cynthia have now registered a new company here in Cyprus called: J.C.Cyprus Friends Dementia Association Ltd. and will apply for Charity Status too. But they are known generally as ‘Cyprus Friends’. Joe and Cynthia are happy to attend meetings to illustrate the work they do with a PowerPoint presentation (lasts about 20 minutes). There is no charge for this and they are just keen to draw awareness to the support of the groups for not only the dementia patients, but their carers too. Joe and Cynthia Sweeney are to be thoroughly commended for the sterling work they are doing, it is invaluable to the community here in Cyprus. It was a pleasure to meet them again and be involved, albeit in a small way, in what they are doing for dementia patients and carers. Helen Barrett Larnaca Community Writer

Just Imagine Catherine Beger and her Little Muse Storytelling Theatre join forces with Caritas Larnaca on 25th November to raise funds for the Caritas Christmas Food Bank. Catherine's new play ‘Just Imagine’ will premiere at the Larnaca Municipal Theatre at 17.00. An Art Exhibition on the theme ‘Share the Journey’ will open in the Foyer at 15.30. To submit entries (A4 only) telephone Luba on 99846689, the deadline is close of business on 10/11/17. There will be prizes for the best. Through this new play Catherine raises fundamental issues about how we operate as a society. How do we see ‘others’? After the premiere in Larnaca the production will tour schools so that key messages of harmony, justice, peace and trust can be shared with the most important people in our communities - the young people. The Play and the Art Exhibition are our way of sharing the journey with you and our beneficiaries. Join us for a magical evening. Premiere tickets from Catherine on 96 216435. Every cent raised will help us to continue to run our Food Bank in Larnaca and to make a special effort at Christmas to provide some of those little extras that make childhood special. We have some wonderful sponsors, but we need more! You can donate at YOU CARING https://www.youcaring.com/catherinebegerlittlemusetheater-962481
For Someone Special You may remember from a previous article I wrote for Daxi last year, about Kessi (full name Eleftheria Kessi Katsiflis), a young girl from Larnaca who needed surgery on her leg. She, and her mum Lynn, flew to America for this surgery and to help fund this trip, funds were raised by the Buffs and Bridget Stanyon and her Slimming World members, who held an auction. Although her medical care was arranged and paid for by the Shriners’ Hospital from the USA, the extra funds were needed for flights, living expenses etc. Well, Kessi had a successful operation in America – but this year Kessi, like every teenager, has grown! She needs another prosthetic leg now. Also, she has inflammation in her leg and so more intervention is necessary now. So, an auction was arranged by Bridget Stanyon, and once again, her Slimming World members rose to the challenge and provided items for the auction and raffle. A grand total of 600 Euros was raised in all, and this will be used for Kessi’s new treatment. Also The Buffs have raised more than 2,000 Euros again for Kessi’s expenses and air fares. Kessi and her mum Lynn hope to fly off in December. Helen Barrett Larnaca Comunity Writer 13

In Search of Suet I will always remember the look of fear on the young shop assistant’s face when the supervisor in customer services ordered her to escort me around a former Paralimni supermarket in my quest for suet. Once out of earshot of her supervisor she whispered, almost apologetically to me “What is suet?” Well now, perhaps you readers would like to have a go at answering that question for the benefit of the uninitiated. This was of course a while ago, before we had today’s kind of local shops that can readily accommodate the vagaries of the British palate. I was once asked what custard was. My full and graphic description of its vibrant colours and variable textures, plus its compatibility to a wide range of running mates, was met with…“Well we might have some. But I don’t know what it is.” Perhaps my favorite all time challenge was when I attracted a small crowd of Cypriot house wives and sales girls in my valiant attempt, through the use of mime and stilted dialogue, to define poppadoms. “Imagine a large crisp nearly as big as a dinner plate, often eaten with hot and spicy food that is prepared by Indians with turbans, not the bows, arrows and feathered headdress variety” etc. etc. After taking a small bow my reward was a restrained round of applause from a wide eyed audience, but alas no Oscar Nomination or indeed any poppadoms. Back in those days, if at a loose end and in a mischievous mood, I would cruise around local convenience stores on wet afternoons; where to my shame I would make perverse enquiries about the availability of mango chutney in their respective emporiums. One obliging Cypriot shop owner invited me around the counter to have a seat while she phoned her sister who used to live at Ealing Common so of course must be au fait with such chutney mysteries. Alas she wasn’t! Anyhow, I digress. Let us return to the search for the meaning of life, sorry I mean suet. SUET: ‘The hard white fat on the kidneys and loins of cattle, sheep and other animals used to make food such as puddings, pastry and mincemeat.’ Put like that, I don’t think I’ll bother thank you! Pass the salad please. By Clive Gardner
O’Malley’s Pig Gerry had not intended to buy a pig. Truth be told he had had a few too many and started boasting that he was going to fatten one up for his Christmas dinner. His mates egged him on and before he knew it he was heading home with the scrawniest piglet that there ever was. His wife gave a sigh when she saw it and just said “Well you had better start feeding it up straight away.” Then she turned away shaking her head. Each day Gerry spent more and more time with the pig. He named it Christmas Dinner, Chris for short. He got to know the pig and would spend hours talking to it and the pig listened. Gerry felt more comfortable in the sty than he did in the house. Gerry would sit in the straw with a bottle or three of Guinness and gently scratch the pigs hairy back. The pig would fall asleep contented and give just the occasional grunt of pleasure. Gerry’s friends missed him; he no longer frequented the local or the market tavern. As they had bets on what the pig would weigh in at on Christmas day they determined to go and see how Gerry was. “Sure the poor man may be on his death bed” said Dermot. “The least we can do is go see him”. “Do yees think he caught something from the pig?” said Finbarr. The next day the group of men made their way down to O’Malley’s and were surprised to find a very contented Gerry lying drunk beside a very fat and inebriated pig. Christmas was just a few days off and Gerry’s wife had started to take much more of an interest in Chris the pig. More than once Gerry had caught her staring over the sty gate with a paper in one hand with the oven dimensions written on and a tape measure in the other. The big day arrived. O’Malley’s wife came striding down the path dressed to kill, literally! She had on her bloodstained off white overall and carried the butchering knife. Gerry stood his ground in front of the sty, “The pigs gone,” he said. “And you won’t find her.” His wife looked at the belligerent little man and said with just the faintest smile “O’Malley, you make my blood boil.” By Jean Hart Every month we will feature the best creative writing and poems sent in by our readers. Movie Review: Hidden Figures The phenomenal true story of the black female mathematicians at NASA whose calculations helped fuel some of America's greatest achievements in space. Now a major motion picture starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kirsten Dunst, and Kevin Costner. Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as ‘human computers’ used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation. Originally relegated to teaching math in the South's segregated public schools, they were called into service during the labour shortages of World War II, when America's aeronautics industry was in dire need of anyone who had the right stuff. Suddenly these overlooked math whizzes had shots at jobs worthy of their skills, and they answered Uncle Sam's call, moving to Hampton, Virginia, and the fascinating, high-energy world of the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory. Even as Virginia's Jim Crow laws required them to be segregated from their white counterparts, the women of Langley's all-black West Computing group helped America achieve one of the things it desired most: a decisive victory over the Soviet Union in the Cold War and complete domination of the heavens. Starting in World War II and moving through to the Cold War, the civil rights movement, and the space race, Hidden Figures follows the interwoven accounts of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, four African American women who participated in some of NASA's greatest successes. It chronicles their careers over nearly three decades as they faced challenges, forged alliances, and used their intellects to change their own lives - and their country's future.
Book Review: The River at Night, by Erica Ferencik Four women have been getting together for a few days every year to cut loose and relieve the pressure of bad jobs, worse marriages, deaths in the family and cancer scares. Winifred, the narrator of Ferencik's heart-pounding debut novel, is skeptical of this year's jaunt, which will take the foursome deep into the Maine woods for some white-water rafting. But Pia, the group's game-for-anything leader, is determined to brave the wild, and their hunky tour guide is confident they can handle whatever the Winnegosset River can throw at them. "Somehow (Pia) sparked all of us to be our least reasonable, our best, most adventurous selves," Winifred thinks early on. This time around, though, that's trouble. The fact that one of the friends is an ER nurse hints that things will go badly, but Ferencik's novel overflows with surprises, from the extreme brutality of the river to the cruelty of some menacing off-the-gridders who cross the path of Winifred and her friends. The best surprise of The River at Night, though, is how it rejects any sweethearted notions of tested sisterhood in favour of a survival tale bolstered by Ferencik's writing, which captures both the beauty and danger of the wild, "where for miles around creatures with eyes built for darkness stared, with paws made for silence crept, smelling us in all our fear and soft humanity." 22

Rub shoulders and network with many people, some of them not your usual types. Restlessness and a big appetite for excitement could strike on the 13th. The urge may not last long, but it could derail your thought processes for a while. Hang on and let trusted friends be your anchors and advisers. The 25th sets you up to be the shining star at work for the next few weeks. Step up, speak up, and dazzle with your success rate. You know how to do things right.
The 3rd brings romantic opportunities and dreams. Protect your feelings. An unexpected challenge could arise around the 12th. It could be inconsequential, but there's the risk of overreacting. If you feel overwhelmed, step back and give yourself more space. You've got this! You could start to study a new language or connect with an exotic someone new to round out your current experiences. (A different part of your own country qualifies as exotic.)
Your competitive side is out in full force on the 1st & 2nd, which spells trouble for your opponents. You're always a good sport but there's no mistaking that you really want to win! Someone new arrives in your life on the 7th & you're not sure what to make of them at first. Tears of happiness and sadness both have strong abilities to heal you. Old habits die hard, which is super evident on the 26th & 27th. The full moon lights up your financial situation.
The 3rd is serious & romantic as the Moon conjoins Venus. If you see eye to eye with a special someone now, it could be for keeps. The full moon is invigorating! Feel healthier, more energetic, & more interested in small but constructive tasks. Water the plants, groom the pet, wash the car - whatever makes you happy. The 12th brings you romance in a big way. If you're secretly looking for a more daring, adventurous relationship, it could be here.
High culture and fine arts are more appealing on the 7th. The full moon brings massive fun and games your way. Even if you spend the time alone, you'll find ways to be joyful, creative, and thrilled. A friend might drop in unexpectedly for a visit. Tend to several loose ends at home and feel virtuous. However, don't imagine changes that don't need to be made. If something works, pat it on the head and move on to the next thing.
Dreams and desires could submerge you on the 1st. Go easy. Perk up your home or have a nice big party or family gathering on the 15th. Fun, food and amusement are all highlighted now. Work may try to interfere, but you can handle that. Your inner child may make a break for it on the 26th. You might need more childlike pleasures - you deserve the comfort and reassurance they bring. Go ahead - dance and run in the rain, if only in your imagination.
Graciously take control of a difficult situation on the 4th. You have fun with bright ideas for how to spend time with your friends on the 6th. Your heart may want to do something big and adventurous, but it might be better if you stick closer to home. Having things right at home takes on an almost exaggerated importance. It can be one small but non-negotiable thing, like the right coffee mug with the right coaster under it. You know what you want!
You may find yourself wanting to be more socially active on the 7th. Surround yourself with friends. Someone else may discover or learn a detail that you need in order to clarify a small monetary mystery. You could receive a gift, too. Friends and local family mean a lot on the 12th. You may be thinking globally, but neighbourhood concerns and pleasures deserve more attention and will be more satisfying. Find something - or someone new to love right around the corner.
Social interactions increase on the 7th. You could start getting a lot more interesting invitations. Your love life could see some rock and roll under the Full Moon. You may want the excitement and distraction, too. Make it fun and give yourself credit. You're fun to be with, after all. A crazy comment from a friend or loved one could spark a train of thought that leads you to a lucrative hobby or a small-scale service.
If tension builds, you'll deal easily with everything on the 8th. The Full Moon makes your soul restless for a dramatic shift or escape from the daily drabness. Rather than emotionally running off, cultivate some personal quiet time. You'll find a lot of wonderful, generous, clever ideas to explore. Dream an old answer to a new problem. You can probably update and tweak it now to great effect.
You have the advantage in any dispute on the 2nd. Play nice! Social life ignites and you could get invitations from an unlikely or surprising organisation or group. If it seems like fun and isn't too reckless, consider it. Your mind is simmering with brilliant insights around the 18th. Discuss it with a trusted special someone and find that life suddenly makes much better sense. There could also be a spiritual insight that opens your eyes.
November starts out sweet but tension could mount as unexpected small problems arise. Be prepared and don't get knocked off balance. The 15th may bring a radical change at work. Be secure in your own talents, skills, and perceptions. You need not go along with someone else's power trip. Social life gets fresh and new around the 30th. Let someone take you somewhere special. Meet a whole new set of fascinating people.

Lighting Up Autumn As Autumn draws to a close I thought that this would be a good craft to share. We dont really get to experience the changing of the leaves here like you do in other parts of the world so I thought we could make our own Autumn leaves. When I first started this craft with the kids I wasnt really sure where we were going with it, it was more about getting them to uderstand how the leaves change and to show them the colours that can be found, but then I had a flash of inspiration and our Autumn Leaf Fairy Lights were created.
What you will need: A packet of air dry white clay (or you could make up a batch of salt dough if you have the time) Paint in Autumn colours and paint brushes Various leaves (we went out for a walk around our estate and collected as many different kinds as we could find) A straw A string of fairy lights (we got ours from Celebrations in Kapparis but other places sell them as well) How to do it: 1) Take a walk and collect as many different type of leaves as you can find 2) Once back home get out your clay (or salt dough) and roll it out about ½ cm thick 3) Place your leaves face up on top the clay (the more defined leaf pattern will normally be on the back of the leaf) and then push down on them to create an imprint 4) Cut around you leaf imprint and use your straw to make a hole in the top of the leaf cut out Written by Sam Barnes. Sam Barnes is primarily a stay at home mum of two, who has loved crafting for many years. She has her own arts and craft Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/tinyacornscreativity and runs a weekly Mummy and Baby Group that is based around creative learning and is a great way to have fun and meet new people. You can also contact Sam by email at: tinyacornscreativity@gmail.com
5) Allow to dry. Luckily we are still quite sunny so this shouldnt take long although I did leave ours overnight to make sure 6) Use your Autumn paint colours to paint your clay leaves 7) Once the paint is dry get your fairy lights and poke a single bulb though each leaf (depending on your build size you may need to add a spot of glue to hold it in place) Thats it! Everything that your child should love - clay, paint, and then a pretty piece to display in the home and show off. Ours has been up all Autumn so far and I absolutely love it! It will definitely be out again next year and I will probably look at getting the kids to make another one with a winter feel to it too.

Cramp Many people have experienced cramps at some point whether during the day or in the middle of the night. They are common and occur when muscles involuntarily contract and cannot relax. The most notorious sites for cramps are the calves, thighs and arch of the foot. Cramps in the hands, arms, abdomen and along the rib cage are also very common. Some common causes of muscle cramps, are insufficient stretching before exercise, exercising in the heat, and muscle fatigue. Athletes who become fatigued and dehydrated while participating in warm-weather sports frequently develop muscle cramps. Imbalances in the levels of electrolytes in the blood, such as sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and phosphate, can also lead to muscle cramps. Symptoms – The muscles in the affected part of the body suddenly become tight and painful due to an involuntary contracting or shortening of the affected muscle or group of muscles. This is known as a spasm and the muscle cannot be controlled. Cramps can last from a few seconds to 10 minutes. Once the cramp has eased, it may remain painful and tender for several hours. Causes – Leg cramps that occur for no apparent reason are called idiopathic leg cramps. Secondary leg cramps can occur as a complication or symptom from an underlying health condition. Theories about the cause of idiopathic leg cramps include sudden restriction of blood supply to the affected muscle, abnormal nerve activity during sleep, excessive strain such as during exercise or age related shortening of the tendons. Secondary leg cramps are caused by extra weight of pregnancy, toxic build-up in liver disease, reduced salt levels due to dehydration, infections such as tetanus, post exercise while resting, neurological conditions such as motor neurone disease or peripheral neuropathy. Excess alcohol and poor circulation also have a contributing factor. Prevention – Stretching and massaging the affected muscles regularly may help prevent cramps or reduce their frequency. If you experience cramp then stretch the muscle until the cramp stops. Whilst muscle cramps are typically self-treatable, there are certain cases where medical advice should be sought including: • They cause extreme pain • They are accompanied with swelling, redness and skin conditions • They bring about muscle weakness • They happen regularly • The residual pain doesn’t subside • They happen relatively frequently and the individual doesn’t undertake strenuous exercise.

Fashion Accessories
The desire to look modern and stylish is absolutely normal. However, to get a complete look, it is not enough to wear a dress even from the latest collection. Without the accessories, the look will be incomplete and that’s what all fashionistas know, therefore, choosing an accessory like a belt, sunglasses or a brooch requires much more time than buying clothes. The fall-winter season brings with it a lot of interesting news and offers in this respect, you only have to carefully analyse the proposed ones and choose what suits you the most. A fashion accessory is an important part of any look, and a properly chosen accessory will not only complement the look but will also emphasise femininity and elegance. Knowing what is in fashion in the coming season, you will surely look incredibly original and seductive. Massive Bracelets - A bracelet looks elegant on the hand of any woman. It is important that it complements the outfit. Fashion Sunglasses - Sunglasses are probably the accessories that will never go out of fashion and this season designers have made huge efforts. It is no longer current to wear ‘drops’ glasses and in their place are coming butterfly sunglasses, as well as plenty of other various shapes. Even an interesting model of square ‘playing card’ sunglasses has been introduced by Dolce & Gabbana. Big Earrings - In the 2017-2018 fall-winter season, massive earrings are fashionable, so forget about discreet and invisible jewelry and buy large items. Such earrings are presented on fashion catwalks in various designs: decorated with stones, in unusual shapes, from unexpected materials, also notice the tendency of asymmetry, which allows the wearing of different earrings according to their shape and style. Scarves - A true fashion hit for the cold 2017-2018 season is the fur scarf. Wide and narrow, multicolored and monochromatic, natural and artificial fur have flooded fashion podiums. Ties - Designers and stylists do not cease to amaze us. In the previous season, everyone wore two or three sizes bigger over their clothes, and in the coming season men’s ties are still very much in fashion. On the fashion catwalks where the collections for the 2017-2018 season were first shown such accessories are presented in a very varied range: there are long and short ties, narrow, monochromatic and coloured for all tastes. Headbands for Every Taste - Those who love hair accessories will definitely have a choice in the 2017-2018 cold season. Hairbands are again fashionable. This time, designers have emphasised models of leather, fur, velvet, decorated with flowers, nails and other metal details. Long Gloves - Gloves are an accessory that keep us warm in winter, and it’s a perfect fit for any outfit. In the coming season fashion will be wearing long-sleeved gloves. A very interesting option, which will please the ladies who love everything that is unusual, these can be seen at Bottega Veneta. Oversized Pendants & Rings - A beautiful necklace will fill any look. In the 2017-2018 seasons, the massive pendants are very on trend. The diversity is enormous and every fashionista has in her jewelry box all sorts of pendants and rings. It’s time to fill your arsenal with massive rings with stones and other decoration elements. Leather Belts - Leather belts are a fashion accessory all the time. In the coming season they are fashionable both with thin and thick straps we just have to choose the right clothing to complement this accessory! Written by Elena Leontiou

How to Choose a Tablet The tablet computer market has come a long way since Apple introduced the iPad in early 2010. If all you want to do on your tablet is browse the Web, check e-mail, or watch movies and other streaming content, just about any model out there can probably do the job. Will it take the place of a laptop, or will you use it in addition to an existing laptop or desktop? Do you want to use your tablet for lots of gaming and movie watching, or is it for more general home use? The most common are Android, Windows and of course, the Apple iOS. IOS: - Seamless integration with OS X and iTunes purchases. - Easy-to-use interface. - Tons of apps, usually first to get the latest and greatest. - iMessage allows you to send messages for free across all Apple devices. Android: - Seamless integration with your Google account and Play Store purchases. - Android devices can be significantly cheaper than iOS or Windows. - Lots of customization and rooting options for advanced users. - Large variety of models and manufacturers to choose from. - Android supports multiple user logins for one device. Windows: - Can run a variety of Windows programs, including Office. Surface Pros run a full desktop version of Windows 10. - Seamless integration with your Microsoft account and Windows Store purchases. Pairs well with Xbox. - Smartglass allows you to use your tablet as a secondary interface for many Xbox 360 and Xbox One games. - Most Windows tablets come with detachable keyboards. How to Choose? Set a budget. Low-end tablets start at around â‚Ź200, while the highest-priced iPad will set you back â‚Ź800 or more. Look at the app selection. Apps are the main point of having a tablet, and the selection of apps will dictate a lot of what your device can do. Try tablets out in a store first. Even if you're planning to buy online, see if you can try out a few different tablets at a retail store. Test to see how the tablet handles loading and closing apps, as well as switching in between open apps. Check out the specifications: Resolution - Processor - Battery life - RAM/Memory - Storage - Cellular connection. Check out the camera. If you plan on taking a lot of pictures with the tablet. Choose a size. Tablets generally come in two different sizes: 10-inch and 7-inch. Well, this is now happening thanks to Mehmet Pasha who is responsible for forming the Larnaca Spartans – the fourth local team to play in Cyprus joining teams from Nicosia, Limassol and Paphos. Having spent 15 years in the banking business in New York and London, Mehmet had a change of career and took up sports and fitness training. He has coached many well known athletes and sportsmen but his first love is rugby union which he has played from the age of 11 at his first school in Bromley, Kent. He has played professionally and hopes, one day soon, to pull on the Cyprus National team jersey! Mehmet reminds us that Rugby Union really seems to be going places in Cyprus with the national team having set a record by winning 24 consecutive matches. He has plans to set up teams in all age groups from under 7’s up to senior level. He is very keen to get Rugby ‘on the map’ in Larnaca and would love to hear from anybody interested in getting involved. Please call him on: 97869117. Kia Launch the Long-awaited Bold and Ballsy Stinger! The Kia Stinger is indeed a bold departure from the Korean carmaker that brought us cars like the Kia Soul and the Kia Carens. That's to say this isn't just another mainstream model that's targeted at the likes of the Hyundai Elantra and the Toyota Altis or the Ford Mondeo and the Volkswagen Passat, even if it should rightfully be so. Instead, the slender five-door coupe with a razor-sharp name that you see here is a prim and proper Grand Turismo (GT) that charges into a more prestigious and desirable realm that's governed by cars like the Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. You, thus, could say that the Kia Stinger is somewhat a car that comes from the most unlikely of carmakers in the business. But that doesn't mean it's putting on a pair of trainers that's a couple of sizes too big for its own good. After all, one of the most gratifying phenomena in the car business is when a super group of engineers and designers of an underdog of a carmaker come together and make a car that's super enough to blow our minds. In this slightly exaggerated illustration, the Kia Stinger could well fit into it flawlessly. By looks alone, the GT possesses a dynamic mixture that's harmonious and giddily frantic all at once, with its low stance, long hood and wide bodied posture that appears like it will gobble up kilometres of tarmac within seconds. The instantly recognisable 'tiger-nose' grille, sharp LED headlamps, and air intake up front give the Stinger a distinct aesthetic, while quad tailpipes at the back summarise the Stinger's strong and confidence appearance. Speaking of strong and confident, the cabin, as we've seen during the launch, clearly shows just how much more luxurious and engaging the Stinger really is compared to the rest of the cars in its stable. With the vibrant 7.0-inch or 8.0-inch infotainment display (depending on variant) taking centre stage and generous room to spare for the average adults at the back, the car is clearly a fork in a world of spoons, where it stands out positively proud. At launch, there are three variants available - the 3.3-litre and 2.0-litre petrol as well as the 2.2-litre diesel. The top-of-the-line 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 variant will smash the century sprint within 4.9 seconds while the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot will do the same in a respectable six seconds flat. To put this into a clearer perspective, the figure from the 2.0-litre model is as fast as the Audi A5 Sportback while the juicer 3.3-litre is faster than the BMW 4 Series 44
Gran Coupe 440i. The said 3.3-litre powerplant will serve up a generous dose of 370bhp and 510Nm of torque to its rear wheels. The 2.0-litre variant, on the other hand, is capable of a saucy 247 beefy Korean horses and 353Nm of twisting force. However, the 3.3-litre will only be available on an indent basis for Singapore. Cycle & Carriage - Kia's official distributor - will be focusing on the smaller but no less feisty 2.0-litre variant when it's being shown to the public at next year's Singapore Motor Show on the second week of January. Cyprus well and truly rocked between the 4th and 11th of October when Iron Stallion Promotions brought to Cyprus some of the hottest rock tribute bands in Europe as well as a 450 strong UK rock following! Locals and tourists alike enjoyed tributes to Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Kiss and The Who as well as rocking out to bands including Stone Free, Jimi Anderson's Legends of AOR, R.U.S.T.X, Blueswreck, Aurora Dawn of Alabama3 and Carl Sentance of Narareth. The response from the businesses and venues in the area in terms of increased trade and the response from locals who enjoyed the festival and music itself has been overwhelmingly positive, so much so that dates in early October 2018 have already been booked to repeat the festival here in Pernera, Cyprus making it even bigger and better with more UK rockers promised to attend and a fantastic new line up of bands! RECIPES - FOOD - DRINKS - INGREDIENTS - TIPS
Moussaka Moussaka is a firm favourite with tourists and locals alike. A real taste of Greek-Cypriot cuisine at its finest. Try this one and you will be sure to impress friends and family. Ideal served with village salad! INGREDIENTS (Serves 4) 1kg aubergines (eggplant) or courgettes or a mixture of both, trimmed and sliced lengthways in thick (1cm) slices 2 large potatoes, peeled and cut in 1cm slices ½ cup sunflower oil 2 medium onions, chopped 500g minced beef, lamb or pork 2 large tomatoes, grated, or one 400g tin of tomatoes ½ tsp ground cinnamon or 1 stick cinnamon ½ tsp salt ½ tsp pepper ½ tsp dried oregano ½ glass dry red wine For the White Sauce (Béchamel): 4 tbsp butter 4 heaped tablespoons plain flour ½ tsp salt pepper 2 eggs (beaten) 1 litre boiling milk Grated hard cheese or Halloumi for topping METHOD Sprinkle the aubergine slices with salt and leave to drain for 20 minutes. Dry and coat with a little flour. Heat the oil and fry the aubergine, courgette and potato slices, turning them so that they brown but don’t cook through. Leave them to drain on kitchen paper. Fry the onions in a little oil until soft, add the meat and stir to break it up. Add the tomatoes, herbs, spices, seasoning and wine and continue to cook for about 25 minutes, or until the liquid is absorbed. For the white sauce, melt the butter in a saucepan, stir in the flour and then add warm milk gradually, whisking briskly to remove any lumps. Add salt and pepper. When it starts to boil, remove the saucepan from the fire but continue stirring for 1-2 minutes. Add the beaten eggs, continuing stirring so that the eggs are mixed into the sauce. To assemble the moussaka, use a 25x25cm baking dish. Line the base with slices of potatoes, courgettes and aubergines. Spread the minced meat in a layer and cover it with another layer of potatoes, aubergines and courgettes. Cover the top with the white sauce (béchamel) and sprinkle some grated cheese on top. Bake in a preheated moderate oven (180-200ºC) for about 50 minutes, or until the top is crusty brown. 48

Tips to Help Sell Your House First, I can give you tips on how to sell your house – but this article is all about not putting people off buying it! So let’s start with ‘kerb appeal’. You won’t know who is giving your place the once-over until they make an appointment, so is the garden and perimeter looking unkempt, with old garden furniture and toys left lying about? Is the paint peeling off and are the gates looking like more rust than metal? Cast a critical eye over your house from all angles, or ask a trusted – and frank! – friend to help you. Yes, I know that some buyers aren’t particularly fussy but you don’t want to miss the ones who are. Remember that some people are put off by smells that you may have got used to, such as regular deep fat frying, pets, over-full bins, teenagers’ socks, you name it. A kitchen deep-clean, plus rug and upholstery cleaning will nail the first two, a frequent nose to the bin the third – and I’m not sure if there is an answer to the last one, but vigilance is the key! Check out www.getridofthings.com to find out how to eliminate the smell of smoking. Damp is another smell to hunt down because damp problems - no matter how common in Cypriot houses - should not be making themselves obvious. Check and repair walls inside and out. Cleaning and painting are small costs. Constant tidying needs discipline – or imposing it! – and if the curtains need washing/cleaning, now’s the time to do it. Remove clutter and get rid of any items of furniture which crowd space and make rooms look smaller. There are limited options with a dated bathroom – but banish the mould, whiten the grout, buy a new shower curtain – and maybe get a couple of new mats and towels just for presentation purposes. You know, the one you were always thinking of getting for yourself! Could the loo seat need replacing…? Ditto the dated kitchen. Clear the worktops as much as possible, clean the grout and give the extractor a birthday present. Maybe buy some new handles for the doors, and paint the kitchen walls in a subtle colour to freshen the ‘look’. Stand back and look at it: is this kitchen looking its best? Is this house looking its best?! Yes, I agree that all this takes time to do – and to research. If you have the time and the eye to do it, you will enjoy yourself, but if you need some help, do give us a call. We offer an absolute no-obligation visit to your house to discuss your options – or if you are not in Cyprus, a brief report.

Plan Your Spring Garden No worries about frost here so it's time again to plan your gardens for the spring. After tidying up old pots and hanging baskets, re-fresh all old compost and think about the flowers, seeds & bulbs you like. Make a list and do one big shop for everything you need. Seeds like Alyisam, Lobelia and pansies make beautiful cheap hanging baskets. Bulbs will be at most garden centres now so look out for Tulips, Narcissus & Hyacinths, they add colour with scent to your garden. If your herb gardens are over grown start new pots with fresh plug plants. It is a good time to take cuttings from Echeverias and cacti to create more pots. Don't forget to water new seeds carefully so as not to wash them away. Also keep your eyes open for heavy rain that can damage seedlings. One of the best things l ever planted in my garden is a Calla Lilie, it's is in my front garden that has evening sun, it doubles in size every year and flowers from March until June, dies back and starts again next autumn. Why not give it a try?

SALES - RENTALS - DEEDS - MORTGAGES - LEGALITY - ADVICE
Capital Gains Tax As property prices in Cyprus begin their recovery our clients are increasingly asking about Capital Gains tax and the liabilities in both Cyprus and the UK. Capital gains are taxed at 20% of the profit made on a property but there are exemptions and allowances against this figure as follows: 1. Every named owner on a property is allowed a lifetime allowance of €17,086 against the purchase of the property. If you are wondering how this figure is calculated it is the equivalent of £10,000 Cyprus pounds. 2. If the property to be sold has been your permanent residence for more than 5 years you are able to claim a lifetime allowance PER OWNER of €85,430 - equivalent to £50,000 Cyprus pounds. In order to claim this allowance proof must be obtained to show that the house has been a permanent residence. Statements from the Electricity Authorities, Municipality water statements and telephone connections are usually used. 3. In addition to the above there is a schedule of monthly inflation figures available from the Cyprus tax office in order to calculate the indexed value of the property at the date of sale. Your agent should be able to calculate this value for you. 4. An invoice from a licenced, registered, estate agent is also allowable against your capital gains tax. 5. If you have received and paid for your title deeds then the amount that was paid in transfer tax is also deductible against the tax bill. 6. Any major works that have been done to the house for example build of a new swimming pool, replacement windows are (with a valid VAT receipt) allowable as a deduction. Items such as fencing, decorating, new bathrooms etc are not. Again your agent or lawyer will advise you. 7. Typically, as most properties are sold with furniture and fittings, it is wise to separate the values of these items into a separate contract to avoid tax on those amounts. When the capital gains tax clearance certificate and calculation is issued, if there is tax to pay then you should pay it very quickly to avoid hefty penalties for late payment. The certificate issued can also be presented to UK authorities to ensure that you do not pay further tax in the UK. Thanks to Island Homes for contributing this article. Communal Property Advice Whilst there are many benefits to owning a property in an apartment building, development or resort, there are also additional concerns. Therefore it’s essential, when owning a property with communal facilities, that you properly understand the unique aspects relating to communal property ownership.
This Issue: Professional AGM Services If you have looked up the requirements to hold a legal AGM you may be thinking, this entire process sounds like a lot of complicated work, and it can be. There are many regulations that must be followed for the meeting to be legal, and potential serious consequences if the regulations are not followed. If you have held numerous AGMs then you will find this is a fairly straightforward process. You will have your checklists to make sure you follow the requirements, your calculation sheets ready for quorum and voting rights, a standard agenda and notice templates. When you have all of this ready it’s simply a case of taking it step-by-step. However, if this is your first time organising a General Meeting, or you have held them in the past but been unaware of all the legal requirements this can be a very stressful and frustrating task. This is where professional support can help. Using a communal property professional can take the hassle out of organising the AGM, and the stress away by making sure all the regulatory requirements are followed. While an additional expense, it can be good value for money as a single mistake can invalidate the committee, votes, budgets etc. This gives problem owners ammunition to take action against the committee, or a debtor the perfect legal excuse not to pay. If you already have a Property Manager, they may be able to offer assistance in organising the AGM, or even offer a service to handle it for you. Just be sure that they know the legal requirements and have experience in holding a General Meeting. If you do everything in-house (self-managed), use a Property Manager for limited tasks (semi-self-managed), or your Property Manager does not offer a AGM arrangement package you can hire a specialist to come in purely to organise your AGM. You want to look for a service that includes, at a minimum, the following: ● Sending notices to owners ● Calculating Quorum ● Calculating decisions by voting (if requested by an owner in attendance) ● Hosting the meeting (guiding step-by-step through the meeting procedure) Some services will include extras like a venue, minute taking, video recording, live streaming the meeting etc. You can get more information on these services using the following link: www.CyprusCommunalGuide.com/DFY-AGM

Cyprus Medical Cards Medical Card Holders Persons entitled to healthcare benefits pay the sum of €3,00 for a visit to a General Practitioner and the sum of €6,00 for a visit to a Specialist. In addition, they will pay a fee of €0,50 for each prescribed pharmaceutical product and €0,50 for each laboratory test with a maximum charge of €10,00 per medicine prescription or per laboratory test prescription form respectively. Payment for drugs and laboratory tests will be made with the use of ‘health stamps’ that have to be purchased in advance and will be affixed to drugs prescriptions and laboratory tests forms. Health stamps are available at public hospitals and post offices. Non Beneficiaries (Non Medical Card Holders) Can still use the services of public hospitals by paying €15,00 for visiting a General Practitioner and the amount of €30,00 for a visit to a Specialist. For any other service provided one has to pay the prescribed fees as they were revised from August 1, 2013 (as per the Government Medical Institutions and Services (Governance & Charges) Law of 1978 and 2013 and the corresponding regulations). Replacement of Medical Cards has to be completed at the local Citizen Service Centers or at the Ministry for Health for families with at least one member who is a third country national. Medical Cards are issued by other agencies such as the Department of Social Insurance and the Office of Grants and Benefits Service and the Medical Card of Civil servants, Hourly-paid Government Personnel and Semi-Government Organisations are not affected. Birthday Milestones When I was a child I remember working out that I would turn 23 in the year 2000. It seemed such a long way off and I couldn't imagine being such an age, presumably all grown up and sensible. I'm sure it's no surprise to anyone over the age of 20 that of course I wasn't all grown up and sensible at all. When I reached that age I assumed that it would come a bit later, at 30 perhaps? I approached my 30th Birthday with excitement and a bit of trepidation. I had a big party planned which was the cause of the excitement but every now and again I would stop and think '30!!!' I had been married for 3 years but was working in a job that I didn't enjoy and always feeling that I should be doing something different, always waiting for something, I just wasn't sure what. I received a card from a friend (whose birthday is the day before mine) saying 'Inside every 30 year old is an 18 year old wondering what the hell happened!’. I remember smiling at it thinking it true but also thinking I bet the 40 year olds are wondering what happened to the 30 year old. It seemed that as my friends were turning 30 they were freaking out a little but I kept telling myself that if was I stressing about 30, what would I be like at 40, or 50 and so on. Actually in some ways 31 was worse...there were no big celebrations, and no one cared as much. It seemed like the start of a downhill slope, plus I was pregnant and unable to party like I usually would! Now at the time of writing, I am about to turn 40. It's been a huge source of amusement to everyone around me from the moment we saw the new year in. It's amused and annoyed me in equal measure, and mainly I have been ignoring the jibes from hubby (who is 4 years older than me). Yes, every now and again I think “wow, 40 sounds big”, but so did 30 and 21 and 18, although in a more exciting way. But of course as someone once said, it's better to reach 40 than not to, age is a privilege denied to many. While that is a depressing thought that I don't wish to linger on, it is very true and so I promised myself not to moan about it and appreciate it instead and hopefully, I'll be sat here in years to come wishing I was 40 once again! When I turned 30 I couldn't have imagined what the next decade would bring - a move to Cyprus, two lovely sons, and our own business among other things. It's actually been my most enjoyable decade so far. Yeah, the 20's always seem like fun looking back but it was a mix of rubbish jobs, too much drama and generally a bit messy! So, I will celebrate, as I love to do and celebrate the start of my forties in style! Hi everyone, I want to share a story I read the other day. I hope you like it as much as I did. It’s called ‘Why Dogs Live Less Than Humans’. A veterinary doctor was called out to examine a 10-year-old very sick Irish Wolfhound dog named Belker. The dog’s owners and 6-year-old little boy Shane were all very attached to their dog and had loved him very much since he was a puppy. The doctor examined Belka and with a heavy heart he had to announce to the family that their beloved Belka was in a lot of pain and dying. He couldn’t do anything for him. He offered the choice of having him put to sleep and the owners agreed that it was for the best. Arrangements were made for the next morning and the euthanasia would take place at Belka’s home, surrounded by his family. The owners also thought it would be a good idea for their son Shane to observe the procedure, to learn that he will see many animals pass on before he will. The next day everyone gathered around Belka as the veterinary Doctor injected him and everyone watched as he slipped peacefully away. Everyone was upset including the Doctor. But the Doctor noticed something strange. Shane had remained unusually calm through the whole ordeal, petting Belka and kissing him and not asking any questions. It seemed as if Shane seemed to accept this transition without any confusion or difficulty. It made the Doctor wonder if the little boy had actually understood what exactly had just taken place. After everyone said their goodbyes to Belka they all sat together wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal’s lives are much shorter than human lives. Shane who had been listening to all this and suddenly piped up “I know why.” Startled they all turned to the little boy and he began to explain. He said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a life of goodness, they have to learn how to be kind and nice to each other, they have to learn how to give LOVE before they die, right?” everyone nodded in agreement to this and Shane continued. “Well dogs already know how to do all this from the very first day they are born, so they don’t have to live as long as humans!” Wow! and I had always just assumed that it was so that they don’t out live us so that we can be around to take care of them.

Pet of the Month This month it is the turn of Russell.... Russell is a male Jack Russell cross born in March 2016. He measures 32cm to shoulder height and is a perfectly sized dog for any household. Russell was found wandering the streets and as he was micro chipped (but not registered) we took him to the local vet near to where he was found hoping the vet would recognise him. Thankfully the vet did know him and gave us details of the owner. Sadly, the owner admitted they no longer wanted Russell and handed him over to Argos Sanctuary. It is beyond belief that Russell is no longer wanted as he is a really lovely boy. Very active and sociable. A little choosy who he shares his kennel with and he prefers to be top dog. However, we have recently had him neutered so believe this dominant trait may subside. Russell loves people and would make an ideal family pet or companion. He is fully vaccinated, has microchip, is neutered and healthy. Russell can be seen at Argos Animal Sanctuary Ormideia which is open 7 days a week from 11am until 3.30pm. Or telephone Steve on 97889579 for any information about Russell or if you want to adopt a dog or cat.
