Hello Daxi readers and welcome to your September edition of Daxi. Whilst the weather is still hot, our main holiday month is now over and we should see temperatures cooling down and everyone back to a flying start at home, school and at work. With only 133 days until Christmas as I write this ("aghhh Christmas" I hear you cry!) the focus is now on the conclusion of summer and the beginning of our beautiful autumn months, personally my favourite time of year. Autumn is a time for renovation and rejuvenation and as such this month’s Daxi is full of ideas for things to do and see as well as hobbies and interests and an extensive list of products and services to get both you and your property in ship shape for the coming months. Have fun! Until next time....

Mimosa Bowls Club Visit KEPA Mr. Eugen Leontiades of Mimosa Hotel handed over the Cheque of €750 to Chrystalla Charalambous of KEPA. Pictures were taken of the presentation with the cheque for the new bed that we have bought for them. It was the very first time that I have been present on the other end of all our charity day efforts, I can’t believe how much that visit has effected myself and my wife Patricia. What I wasn’t prepared for was the sight of all those people sat there being very well cared for but most of them in a world of their own. Just to think these people were not so long ago active, young and full of every day worries that we go through, now their bodies and minds have said that’s enough and have shut down and left them so they have to be looked after 24 hrs a day. This is where the lovely people at KEPA have stepped in and are looking after them. It was a great feeling to think that after all our charity bowls days, playing alongside the other bowls clubs on the island and meeting up with friends we got to know over the years, we can now give some very much needed help and comfort to people who are now needing help more than ever before in their lives. So, and I must admit I was the same when it comes to playing in our charity days just to think oh it’s for charity (KEPA and PASYKAF) didn’t mean a thing to me but after yesterday’s visit it has shown me how much we can achieve to help others while playing our much-loved game of bowls. So please do think next time we are playing our charity games of what these names KEPA & PASYKAF etc, really stand for. I know I will and it makes it all seem very worthwhile. It just proves that we as a club can make a big difference to the quality of life for others, as well as making friendships within the bowls club. Kevin Males

LARNACA REGION L o c a l - C o m m u n i t y - N e w s - E v e n t s - P e o p l e
Here at Daxi we love Larnaca and all the fantastic experiences and uniqueness it offers so this month we have highlighted some of the best things to do and see during September to give you a real taste of Larnaca Culture, Tradition and Archaeology. Enjoy!
Larnaca Salt Lake Larnaka Salt Lake is the second largest salt lake in Cyprus and measures 2.2 square kilometres. In 1997 it was declared a protected area under Cypriot Law for the Protection and Management of Nature and Wildlife and under the European Habitats Directive. It is a significant Ramsar and Natura 2000 site – one of the most significant biotopes in Europe - and one of the most important habitats in Europe for waterfowl. Located southwest of Larnaka town and east of the villages of Meneou and Dromolaxia, the Salt Lake – known locally as ‘Alyki’ - is actually one of four lakes in Larnaka. Together, with Lake Orphani, Lake Soros and Airport Lake, the lakes collectively cover a total area of 1761 hectares. During the winter, the lake fills with water and is home to migrating birds, including thousands of flamingos that stay between November and March, along with wild ducks and other water or shore fowl that find refuge here on their migratory journeys. The most basic element of the food chain in the lakes’ ecosystem is the small brine shrimp Artemia (Artemia salina), which the other life greatly relies on. When flamingos and other water birds are unable to find the shrimp, they desert the salt lakes and continue their journey by travelling to Lake Akrotiri in Lemesos or south towards Africa. Winding through the lake area is a designated, linear nature trail that is 4 km in length, and leads all the way up to the old aqueduct of Kamares. The various flora of trees, shrubs and flowers is signposted with information along the way, and there are also periodic benches, making the path popular for walkers and joggers. Archaeological finds show that the Salt Lake area and that of the nearby mosque have been inhabited since the Late Bronze Age (2nd century BC). In prehistoric times the Salt Lake was a harbour that served the town, unearthed near where the Hala Sultan Tekkesi mosque stands today. The town was one of the large urban and commercial centres of Cyprus in the Late Bronze Age (1650-1050BC). When the town was abandoned, the estuary silted up and the natural harbour was destroyed. According to legend, the lake's saltiness stems from Agios Lazaros (Saint Lazarus) request of an old woman for food and drink. She refused, claiming her vines had dried up, to which Lazarus replied ‘may your vines be dry and be a salt lake forever more’. A more scientific explanation is that the salt water penetrates the porous rock between the lake and the sea, making the water very salty. Throughout the Middle Ages, salt was so plentiful that it became one of the primary export commodities of Cyprus. Its harvesting and selling were strictly controlled and taxed. Salt was last harvested in 1986.
Agios Lazaros Byzantine Museum The Byzantine Museum at the church of Agios Lazaros (Saint Lazarus) is housed in some of the cells of the hypostyle porch that still stand to its south. The museum’s exhibits include important religious icons, artefacts and relics, including Byzantine icons, gospels, crosses and other ecclesiastical treasures from the whole district of Larnaka. The church itself is located in its own, picturesque square in the centre of town. It is one of the most remarkable examples of Byzantine architecture in Cyprus and lies over the tomb of the saint, who came to Cyprus after being resurrected by Jesus. He was ordained as Bishop of Kition by the Apostles Barnabas and Paul and lived in the town for 30 years. Agios Lazaros is so revered that a procession is held in his honour eight days before Easter. During the procession, the icon of the saint is carried through the streets of Larnaka. Have you had a charity or community event? A Birthday Anniversary or Wedding Celebration? Agrotourism Nestled in breathtaking mountainous areas and beautiful rural villages, a selection of restored Cypriot village houses offer traditional accommodation for agrotourism holidays that embrace nature and rural activities. Here you will discover that the countryside has a diverse wealth of its own from vineyards, wineries and tiny fresco-painted churches to remote forests, waterfalls and rare flora and fauna. Specifically, agrotourism can be enjoyed at the Larnaka region villages of Agios Theodoros, Choirokoitia, Kalavasos, Kato Drys, Lefkara, Maroni, Psematismenos, Skarinou, Tochni, Trolloi and Vavla. For information on Larnaka's traditional properties and to book, visit the official website of Cyprus Agrotourism Company: www.agrotourism.com.cy
Larnaca's Traditional Villages In the peace and quiet of rural Larnaka, traditional village life and all its special elements can be discovered and enjoyed by visitors wanting a taste of authentic Cyprus. Why not visit a village coffee shop and share a conversation with the locals over a Greek coffee? Or, if you fancy something to eat, perhaps try a traditional meze - an abundance of small Cypriot dishes, washed down with the local village wine and accompanied by the sounds of the bouzouki. By day, immerse yourself in village life and watch how the delicious local bread is prepared, or experience how Cyprus' famous Halloumi cheese is made by hand. During the different seasons you can watch various crops being harvested and processed into delicious byproducts – with most villages welcoming visitors to join in the work and savour its rewards after. From olives and nuts to citrus fruits and grapes, each is blessed with the fresh and vibrant flavours the sun’s rays and the fresh air bestowed upon them. And each village also retains a craft or folkart of its own, which ranges from the handmade production of traditional food and drink to the most intricate of art forms that require the skill and knowledge of previous generations, handed down exclusively to those in the village. Among the many specialties you will find handmade lace linens, filigree silver, ornate wood carvings, complex basket weaving, pretty pottery, bronze ware, glass art and more. From folk customs to authentic tastes, from village architecture to the beauty of the natural environment, Larnaka's diverse region offers you the chance to escape and experience something totally different.
Kition Archaeological Site The architectural ruins of the ancient city-kingdom of Kition provide the first clear evidence that the Mycenaean Greeks arrived in Larnaka in the 13th century BC, and the Phoenicians in the 9th. Achaeans redesigned and rebuilt the city around the end of the 13th century, fortifying it with cyclopean walls made of giant blocks of stone, whilst the Phoenicians settled in the area in the 9th century. In 312BC, Kition was occupied and then destroyed by Ptolemy 1st Soter, though habitation continued into Christian times. Kition was well known for its harbour during antiquity, from which many agricultural products were exported to the eastern Mediterranean, Egypt and the Aegean. Moreover, its strategic position rendered it an exceptional naval base. Of particular interest at the ancient port are the drawings of ships etched into the walls of buildings. The most interesting architectural remains are those of the Temple of Aphrodite – Astarte, built by the same Phoenician masons that built the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, both originating in the 9th century BC. Egyptian-style temples of the 18th Egyptian Dynasty - which are older than the Greek equivalents and served the pre-Hellenic Cypriot population - have also been found nearby. The site is one of the first that the Cyprus Department of Antiquities excavated after independence in the early 1960’s, and is linked to the Aphrodite Cultural Route.

Rockfist Rogan gets ‘The Snip’ My late mother was a lovely lady and would never intentionally hurt or upset another living soul or creature. However, that is not to say that she did not possess a few strange foibles of her own. For someone who never visited a doctor, dentist or optician in fifty years, she displayed a morbid interest in pre-war diseases and illnesses. As a child, she would regal me with strange tales of these exotic long forgotten ailments. Like Old Mother Mortimer struck down with erysipelas, which caused her head to swell to three times its normal size. Wide eyed at her knee, I learned about impetigo, scurvy and the dreaded scabies, not to mention scarlet fever, diphtheria and the raging rabies. I majored in the art of fumigation of infestations at the age of four. Having grown up herself, in a pre-antibiotic world, she would never fully accept that contagion was no longer lurking all around ready to pounce. Hence when my father brought me home a pile of comics of what she thought of ‘dubious origin’, she promptly baked them in the oven to kill the germs. Baked Beanos and roasted Roy of the Rovers of course were no good at all for swopping with one’s chums. When I started learning German at school I was awarded a pen friend over there being the same age as myself. So, I put together a collection of comics (not of the charred variety) to post to him. When I later returned home from a cricket match at school, a big shock awaited me. My mother had censored parts of the comic collection using her pinking shears. She had removed all reference to Rockfist Rogan, RAF Spitfire ace and champion boxer to boot. Mother argued that it would be wrong to upset Heiko (my correspondent) by confronting him with these WW2 stories, because after all, we were all friends again now. So Rockfist Rogan, who week in week out, had defied the finest Messerschmitt’s and pilots the Luftwaffe had to offer, (but even I had to admit was prone to the odd jingoistic and xenophobic outburst) was finally brought down to earth by mum’s dressmaking scissors. R.I.P Rockfist. Heiko never once mentioned the blatant editing that had occurred in the comics. But there again, maybe his mother told him not to! Clive Gardner
Perception Creates Reality If creating change in life seems distressing, always know that change is upsetting, only, to the degree you are emotionally attached to the old way of life, or to the extent you focus on the past rather than the infinite possibilities of the future. When you set an intention to change your life, the more you notice that your life is changing, the more it changes. In other words, what you firmly and emotionally believe is your reality will become your reality. Perception is everything. The Trouble with Goats and Sheep
By Joanna Cannon Book Review At first mystified by its title, I was not sure what to make of this book. It is the debut novel of Joanna Cannon and the story is set in that hot summer of 1976 (yes, you remember, the one where we all thought we lived in the Mediterranean, but it was the UK). The main narrator is 10-year-old Grace and it is through her eyes we see the mystery (which is the backdrop of the book) unfold and how she and her best friend Tilly, try to unravel it. The children’s refreshing honesty and simplistic way of looking at things is refreshing but lacking in the adult world sadly. The repercussions in this story are enormous. The book is about an ordinary English street, yet this avenue is full of people who have secrets, suffer life’s heartbreaks and hide their true feelings. Joanna Cannon is to be commended for her purity of writing, almost poetic at times and her amazing way of observing people. Helen Barrett
Passengers Film Review
The film is about a space craft transporting thousands of people to a distant colony planet, however during this time of travel there is a malfunction on one of the pods and one of the passengers (Chris Pratt) awakens. The story keeps you interested all the way through. The movie is visually stunning & the story telling is not only thought provoking but innovative while doing so. The film has great actors, great effects, simply a joy for the eyes. A great fairy tale in space. Part love story, part survival story, part space odyssey, this movie will captivate your imagination. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence share great chemistry, and Michael Sheen shines as a strong supporting character as well.
Cyprus Dog Tails
Real stray dog stories from the voices of the animals. By Natalie Reed I was eager to read this book because I had heard from so many people about Natalie Reed’s love of animals – and also about the number of animals she and husband Mark have helped and homed over the years. Indeed, at the Reed house there are nine dogs (and lots of cats) who have found their forever home and who have now (through Natalie) decided to tell their stories! The book begins with Shammy – the first dog. His story is heartbreaking – he is abandoned by his humans and struggled to survive. Thank goodness, he is found and taken in by Natalie and Mark....a happy ending, for sure! Without wishing to give any of the stories away, the other eight dogs are given a safe haven with Natalie and Mark, and each showered with love in their turn. All the stories are sad to start with – you will certainly need a large box of tissues! The horrific backgrounds from which these dogs come will sadden you and shock you. These stories are not fiction or products of somebody’s imagination.... they actually happened. Also, I believe the book is given more pathos and resonance because the dogs ‘tell their own stories’ and are given a voice. A great idea...to give the animals their own voice, so that they can gain the importance they deserve at last. If I had to pick a favourite – it would be Charlie. Yes, I know...you shouldn’t have favourites, but when I saw his little face in the photo.... well, I melted! Such a sad story, but with the happiest of endings, of course. Of course, we all love this paradise isle of Cyprus – many of us have chosen to live here. However, the terrible abuse of animals is all too common and many people are fighting this on a daily basis – to make the changes for better animal welfare. So, it is thanks to the huge hearts of people like Natalie and her husband Mark things are slowly improving. An added bonus is that, once you have read the book and you have become acquainted with these lovely dogs.... you can go on the CyprusStrays website and register to be kept up with the news of them through the monthly Pupdates. Do buy this book.... its sales will raise valuable funds for these dogs to stay together as a family and for other Cyprus strays such as these ...a wonderful book (with lovely photos of the dogs, too) and an excellent venture. Perhaps a ‘Cats’ Tails’ for a sequel Natalie......? Helen Barrett

Cyprus Wines, Beers Spirits & Coffee
Cyprus Wines Cyprus, this tiny island in the Mediterranean, has been the home of Greeks for Millenia. Their wine-making and culinary traditions go back far in time. The first evidence of wine-making here found by archaeologists dates back 5000 years. European history, our written record of our past, starts around 800 BC. It was at that time that the poet Hessiod, describes a process of wine-making from sun-dried grapes pretty much the way Commandaria is made today. ‘Cyprus Namma’ it was called in Byzantine times and it is the wine still used in the Orthodox Church for Holy Communion. The name, ‘Commandaria’ became adopted when it was much sought after by Richard The Lionheart and his Knights Templar at the ‘Commandarie’ of Kolossi Castle. In fact at his wedding King Richard described it as ‘The Wine of Kings and King of Wines’. It is a wine that can be aged even for a hundred years. One Cyprus winery called the ‘Anama Concept’ makes special beautiful gift sets (a different design each year so that they can be collected). The beautifully presented gift set comprises one large bottle to be kept for ageing and one small bottle to drink now. Apart from its Commandaria, Cyprus used to be known abroad in the last century largely for its Sherries until the word became a protected denomination of origin for Jerez in Spain. In the past 20 years, as in Greece, great strides have been made in local wine making. The terrain and climate of the Troodos mountains, really lend themselves to superb quality of vine production, whereas in the past all the wines were produced by four main co-ops of which Keo and SODAP were the largest. Now many family vineyards have dedicated themselves to producing quality wines that win numerous prizes in International Wine Competitions. There are over 40 wineries of substance in the Troodos Mountains and its foothills. Xinisteri in white and Mavro in red, are the main indigenous grapes of Cyprus, but there are quite a few others too including Maratheftiko, Ofthalmo and Spourtiko. During the last couple of years they have begun to use a number of unknown local varieties of Yiannoudi, Promara and Morokanela. Internationally known varieties, Shiraz (Syrah for the French), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Mourvèdre also know as Mataro, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grow well here. For great value, Keo’s Thisby is popular. If you are eating out excellent value is to be found in Constantinou’s Veloudon (Velvet) for red and Ayio Klima for white. There is a dry and medium version. Vouni Panaya produce some very nice good value wine, their Alina medium dry for example. Both Tsalapatis and Vlassides make a very nice Sauvignon Blanc and also a good rosé and Dafermou has an interesting blend of the Greek Assyrtiko, Chardonnay and Muscat. Each winery has something different to give you.
Cyprus Beers and Spirits Beer is produced on the island, Keo, Leon and Carlsberg, making the most popular lagers. There is also a small Micro-Brewery called Prime, in Sotira that makes a number of speciality beers including a white beer and a stout. Zivania is another traditional alcoholic drink made by distilling wine. Through natural fermentation wine will only increase in alcoholic strength to around 15%, possibly 16% if it has a high sugar level at the start. High alcohol content drinks such as whisky, brandy and the aforementioned ‘Zivania’ are produced by further distilling the fermented juice. Aged Zivania is particularly nice and ever so smooth. A fair amount of brandy is also produced in Cyprus. It is not as sweet as the Greek ‘Metaxa’. Another popular choice is Keo’s Five Kings.
Cyprus Coffee Leaving aside alcoholic drinks, what will you ask for when it comes to ordering a coffee? Typically you will ask for a ‘Nes’ (short for Nescafé) or a Cyprus Coffee, which is the same as a Greek coffee, which is the same as a Turkish coffee. You can ask for a ‘Sketo’ (on its own) if you want no sugar. ‘Metrio’ (medium) if you would like one sugar. ‘Gliki’ (sweet) if you have a really sweet tooth and would like two sugars. The coffee, sugar and water are heated in a special pot called a ‘Briki’. Part of the art is not to let it fully boil and thereby leave a little froth at the top of each cup. This is called ‘Kaimaki’. If you are having such coffee for the first time, do bear in mind that you are not supposed to drink the sediment at the bottom of the cup. In the heat of summer you might go for a ‘Frappé’, a whisked, iced instant coffee with milk. Written by Billy Warry - Wines and cuisine food author. Hedwig the Owl As we celebrated a friends’ birthday Harry Potter style recently I needed to come up with a craft to suit the birthday boy’s theme. I had been told that Harry had an owl so decided that this was to be my craft for the children to complete at the party, their own Hedwig! This is such an easy craft to do and so ‘cheep’. What you will need: A Pine Cone Cotton Wool Googly Eyes White and Yellow Pipe Cleaners How to Step 1 – Give your pine cone a quick wash to ensure it is clean and free from bugs. Step 2 – Preparation time! Shred some cotton wool, cut 2 white pieces of pipe and one piece of yellow to around 8-9cm, and pick out some googly eyes (the bigger the better for an owl). Step 3 – Get your pine cone and push the shredded cotton wool into every available space. The fluffier you want your owl the more cotton wool you will need. Step 4 – Use your two white pipe cleaners to create 2 oval shapes (these are your wings), and make your yellow pipe cleaner piece into a beak shape. Push these into a space on your pine cone as well. You can use glue for extra hold if you wish. Step 5 – Finally push in, or glue on, your owl’s eyes. One finished Baby Hedwig! Twit-twoo!! Please note that you don’t necessarily need the googly eyes and pipe cleaners, you could also use coloured paper to draw, or cut out your wings, beak, and even eyes. Why not carry on from this project as well and see if you can make a birdcage for your new pet, maybe an old shoe box or a paper cylinder with cut outs, see what your little one can create. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) begins with numbness and tingling in the hand. It is a very common condition, particularly with the massive increase in desk bound workers (repetitive strain). It is caused by a pinched nerve in the palm of the hand. The symptoms may occur intermittently during the daytime and sometimes occur at night. They tend to affect the thumb, index finger and middle finger. Other symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include: • Pins and needles (paraesthesia) which tends to wake the sufferer in the middle of the night • Thumb weakness
Although the diagnosis is usually fairly straightforward, misdiagnosis is not uncommon.
• A dull ache in the hand, arm or shoulder The carpal tunnel is a narrow tunnel formed by the bones and other tissues of the wrist through which the nerves, ligaments and tendons pass to the hand. Repetitive actions can cause the tendons to swell and become inflamed which presses on the main nerve of the hand (the median nerve), causing pain in the hand and wrist, resulting in CTS. Certain things are thought to increase the risk of CTS developing, such as: • A family history of CTS • Pregnancy – up to about 50% of pregnant women develop CTS • Injuries to the wrist • Other health conditions, such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis • Strenuous, repetitive work with the hand Any activity that involves grasping, squeezing or clipping motions such as using a computer, using tools, knitting or playing the piano can be pre-disposing factors to CTS. However, there are also possible underlying disorders which can cause CTS, for example thyroid problems, as well as other blood and neurological conditions. The approach to making the diagnosis requires several modalities, the case history – the patient's account of the symptoms, examination – what can be seen and felt on examining the patient and provocative tests – a set of physical manoeuvres designed to provoke symptoms in patients with CTS. 28
Conditions which have been mistaken for CTS include, but are not limited to: • Cervical radiculopathy (pressure on the nerve roots in the neck) • Thoracic outlet syndrome • Ulnar neuropathy (at the elbow or wrist) • Peripheral neuropathy • Syringomyelia (a cyst within the spinal cord) • Multiple sclerosis • Motor neurone disease • Trigger digits • Rheumatoid arthritis • Raynaud's phenomenon/disease • Tenosynovitis • Writer’s cramp Osteopaths have the required knowledge and skills to determine the cause of CTS and either treat the condition or refer to specialists for further tests. Initially a physical examination of the hands, arms, shoulders, neck is performed as well as detailed questions to determine if the patient's complaints are related to daily activities or to an underlying disorder. Osteopathic treatment may help to reduce the symptoms of CTS. THIS ARTICLE ‘CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME’ IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY AND IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL ADVICE. Signs You’re Dehydrated - And How to Hydrate Fast Whether you are outside enjoying warm summer weather or just living a busy lifestyle, it can be all too easy to slip into dehydration. Doctors recommend that you drink at least eight glasses of water each day. However, it can be all too easy to forget. On hot summer days, it is tempting to get caught up in walking outside or tanning on the beach while completely forgetting to sip on some water along the way. When you are dehydrated, you want to rehydrate as fast as you can. Dehydration can be harmful to the body, taking away its ability to regulate its temperature, digestion, and other bodily processes. I know those symptoms sound scary - and the truth is, they are. It is vital to keep the fluid in your body flowing, whether it is during a workout or in the dead of winter. The condition can come at you fast, and so can its side effects. Disorientation, exhaustion, and nausea are only a few of the uncomfortable sensations that come with being dehydrated. There are many other symptoms of harmful dehydration, as well. Look out for these signs that you are dehydrated so you can stop the condition in its tracks before it becomes really dangerous. Bad Breath Saliva can work to eradicate bad breath due to its antibacterial properties. When you are dehydrated, your production of saliva slows way down. If you are not producing enough saliva in the mouth, you can get bacteria overgrowth and one of the side reactions of that is bad breath from chronic dehydration. So, unless you want your breath to stink, it's best to drink up Constipation Water does a whole lot for our digestion - including making it easier for your bowels to move things along. Without water, things are more likely to get stopped up. Dizziness Dehydration can cause your blood pressure to drop since you have less fluid volume in your blood. Lower blood pressure often results in a feeling of dizziness or vertigo. Even very mild dehydration, where in you only lose one to two percent of your body weight, can lead to dizziness. Dry Skin When your body is lacking water, your blood volume decreases. Blood volume contributes to the hydration of your skin cells so when you don't get enough water, your skin becomes very dry. 32
Headache Your brain sits inside of a fluid sac to prevent it from bumping against the sides of your skull. When you don't get enough water, that layer of liquid protection gets thinner, resulting in a headache. Muscle Cramping You are especially susceptible to this symptom in warmer weather. When your muscles heat up, they are more likely to seize up - the uncomfortable cause of cramping. Changes in the electrolytes, changes in the sodium and potassium can lead to muscle cramping. All of these imbalances could be caused by dehydration.
Ways to Hydrate Fast If you notice any of these symptoms, don't worry there are steps you can take to get your fluid flowing again. Trying any or all of these ten tips can help you rehydrate fast when you really need to - remember, by the time you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated! Avoid Caffeine, Junk Food and Alcohol Alcohol, sugary/oily foods, and caffeine are diuretics and are all linked to an increase in urine production. You're trying to get your body to retain water, not flush it out. Not only is abstaining from these substances good for your health in the long run, but it also can prevent dehydration from happening in the future. Eat Something Salty Sodium is a necessity in any diet due to its ability to regulate water in the body. Too much sodium can dehydrate you, too little can make rehydrating difficult. Snack on some crisps or salted peanuts to regulate your water levels and keep your fluid balanced. Electrolytes Electrolytes, the stars of sports drinks and coconut water, are particles in liquid that help your body to retain more water. Drinking these alongside smaller amounts of water can help prevent hyponatremia, a condition athletes experience when they drink too much water and decrease the sodium levels in their blood. Fruit Many fruits such as watermelon and strawberries, are comprised of over 90 percent water. Munching on these can help you rehydrate while adding vital nutrients and fibre into your diet. The natural sugars in fruit will also help you replenish stores of glycogen - helpful if you are rehydrating after an intense workout.
Lie Down When you are dehydrated, you want to use as little extra energy as possible. Your body needs all the energy it can get in order to replenish the fluid stores in your body and return to its full working capacity. Lie down and rest to ensure that you are not using up more water than you need to in the process of trying to hydrate. Milk To everyone's surprise, studies show that milk actually may be more efficient at hydrating your body than just plain water. To hydrate most efficiently, buy a low-fat or skimmed milk. The fat in regular milk can slow fluid replacement in the body Soup Soup contains sodium and water - the dynamic duo of rehydration. Add some vegetables in there for an added boost of nutrients and you're good to go. Water Though it is the most obvious choice, it is also the best one. At the most basic level, dehydration is caused by a need for water. Just be sure to sip slowly - guzzling too much all at once can slow the process and may only really serve to nauseate you and increase urination. Yoghurt Plain yoghurt contains about 85 to 88 percent water and is loaded with potassium and sodium. All three of these qualities make it ideal for rehydrating your body as quickly as possible. Add fruit to your yoghurt or try something else new with the creamy food for an extra hydrating boost. Thanks to Mark Davies BA HONS, FIAB, MCMI of Sunshine Carers for writing this article. How to Choose the Best Drone for You Simple answer: Choose a budget, then find a drone to match.
Drone Safety Tips
- Don’t fly near airports or airfields The quality of the materials, the range and power of the drone and the specifications - Remember to stay below 400ft (120m) of the accessories - primarily the camera - are the main factors that affect a drone's price. - Observe your drone at all times - stay Slightly less simple answer: You should also be realistic about what you want to achieve and how good a pilot you are. Some of the more 'pro' drones are quite 150ft (50m) away from people & property demanding to fly and have broadcast quality cameras. If what you want is to have - Never fly near aircraft something more like a remote-control helicopter that can also take the odd photo, we recommend you go for something cheaper. - Enjoy responsibly There are numerous drones that you can fit a GoPro to, including GoPro's own Karma. So, if you already own one of the ubiquitous action cams, that could be one way of keeping your costs down. Finally, if you have no desire to shoot video and stills from the air but still want to get droning, try joining a race club and dart through an obstacle course of disused buildings and woodland. Racing drones are also equipped with a camera but it's so the pilot can see where he's going. You'll still crash anyway, though. Our Ranking: 1. DJI Mavic Pro €119 What is the best drone? 2. DJI Phantom 4 Pro €1699 3. GoPro Karma €1399 Right now, if we had to pick a brand that 4. Parrot Mambo €98.90 stands above the rest, it's DJI and if we 5. Revell Nano Quadcopter were to name the best drone you can €25.99 buy, it'd be the DJI Mavic Pro. The 6. DJI Inspire 2 €3399 Mavic serves up the best blend of 7. Parrot Bebop 2 €399.90 4K/12-megapixel videos images, ease 8. Helipal Storm SRD 280 and fun when flying and portability racing drone about €500 9. Micro Drone 3.0 €199.99 when not flying (it folds up). The IOS and Android apps are excellent and then the 10. AirSelfie €260 dedicated controller is there if you want to take the drone much further than mobile Wi-Fi will allow. Caring for Your Car Whilst Driving in Hot Weather In Cyprus summer stretches from mid-May to mid-October and means high temperatures, cloudless skies and cooling breezes from the sea. As well as the usual health warnings of avoiding the hottest parts of the day, making sure you use sunscreen protection and drinking plenty of water, you also need to consider your car if you are going to be driving during these intense periods of heat. Here are some essential tips to ensure that your car will not suffer the extra heat stress and to also keep you and your family safe whilst you are out and about on the island. Check the level and strength of the coolant in your engine. A low coolant level may allow your engine to overheat. Make sure the coolant reservoir is filled to the proper level (in-between Min & Max). NEVER try to open a radiator cap on a hot radiator to check the coolant level. Hot steam and boiling coolant will spray out and burn you! Wait until the engine has cooled to check the level inside the radiator (not necessary if the coolant level in the reservoir is maintained). If low, add a 50/50 mixture of the specified coolant and water. NEVER run straight water in the radiator. Water does cool better than antifreeze but antifreeze is required to raise the boiling temperature of the coolant and to protect against corrosion. Check your air conditioner. Make sure the A/C blows cold air and is working properly, nothing makes hot weather seem worse as a poor air conditioner. If the A/C is not blowing cold air, the refrigerant charge may be low. The system should be checked for leaks before adding new refrigerant. Check the age of your battery, most car batteries only last 4 or 5 years. If your battery is 5 or more years old, it will definitely need to be replaced soon. Hot weather is harder on batteries than cold weather because it increases the rate of evaporation of the liquid electrolyte inside the battery (not such a problem with gel type batteries). The date can be identified by reading the date code on the battery. Check and change the oil. Replacing old dirty oil with fresh oil will increase the lubrication protection for your engine. Changing to a heavier viscosity motor oil during hot weather is a good idea, especially on older high mileage engines. Synthetic motor oils are much better for high temperature protection. Check or replace the windscreen wipers. Natural rubber wiper blades have a limited life of a year or less. Sun exposure, extreme heat and cold all age the rubber and causes it to become hard and brittle. If the wipers streak, chatter or smear, it’s time to replace them. Check Your Tyres. Check them for wear, uneven wear, age cracks or damage. Check the inflation pressure in all the tyres, including the spare. Underinflated tyres make them run hot and increases the risk of a blowout. Buy a sun shade for the windshield to reflect light so the interior doesn't get so hot if the vehicle is parked in direct sunlight, preventing you from getting a hot seat or burning yourself on hot interior surfaces. Following these basic but essential tips should ensure that you have pleasant, uninterrupted driving here on the island and avoid the stress of breaking down. Enjoy!
