Your Confidence Will Grow With the Baby
ew parents can't help themselves: in an effort to do everything "right" with their newborn, they sometimes doubt themselves and think they are doing things "wrong." Give yourself a little grace. Baby is probably thriving! According to What to Expect the First Year (Workman; 2014), most babies double their birth weight by 4 months of age and triple it by age 1. When you take your baby to his well-child visits, you'll have the chance to ask all the questions you have while your pediatrician weighs, measures and vaccinates Baby. As long as you follow your pediatrician's guidelines you will be fine, and you will grow in confidence as baby comes along. REMEMBER: Millions of new parents have been here before! When in doubt, call your doc.
TIPS FOR FLYING WITH YOUR BABY FOR THE FIRST TIME
TOP SURPRISES ABOUT YOUR BRAND-NEW NEWBORN
A
R
• Feed Baby just before boarding so he's not grumpy.
• Your newborn may look like a little old, wrinkled man at birth. A first bath will do wonders.
s soon as you board the plane, you see people watching you. Oh, no, a baby! But you can manage and your baby has every right to be there. Here are tips for making it all go smoothly. Remember to breathe.
• Take advantage of family pre-boarding so you and Baby can get settled in your seats. • Increased cabin pressure can cause fussiness for your little. Keep a prepared bottle handy — or be prepared to breastfeed in order to help him clear his little ears. • Consider little toys: Pull out surprises for Baby when he's wakeful as the flight goes on. • Use an air-sick bag as a puppet to entertain. • Quietly read board books to Baby.
ead up all you want to, there will STILL be surprises with your little newcomer. Here are some of the top headscratchers that continue to surprise new moms and dads when the baby finally comes.
• Newborns eliminate mustard seed-like poos until they add solid food to their diet. They can also have explosive bowel movements all the way up their back. This WILL happen. • Only sponge bathe your infant until the umbilical cord falls off. • Newborn fingernails grow surprisingly fast, and it makes parents nervous to trim them. To avoid nicks, file the nails instead with a soft emory board. Source: First Time Parent (Harper Collins: 2006) by Lucy Atkins.

BABY BITS
9 Secrets All New Mamas Should Know BY CASSI DENARI
R
eady or not, your baby is coming! As a new mom there will be a lot of uncertainty — and possibly tons of unanticipated guilt! Am I doing this right? Is my baby eating too often, not often enough? Is he sleeping enough, pooping enough? Is his poop supposed to be that color? At times, you may think you are doing it all wrong. You're not. Here are tips:
GOT MILK?
Don’t hesitate to call a lactation consultant if you have any questions about nursing. Breastfeeding doesn’t come naturally to every woman. Like most things in life, you do much better with a little instruction, so don’t be afraid to ask. “When I was in the hospital, I asked every nurse that came in my room for advice. Was I doing it right? Is the baby latched on correctly? Did she have any suggestions? I left the hospital with a little more confidence about nursing,” says Lisa Banks, mother of two.
DOCTOR DOCTOR
If you have health concerns about your baby, don’t feel uncomfortable calling the pediatrician or advice nurse. Trust your instincts and call.
8
SPRING 2019
Always call the doctor if the baby develops a rash or a very high fever.
HEAVY LIFTING
Don’t lift anything heavier than your baby for the first month. Also, as soon as the doctor gives the OK, start doing those Kegel exercises. Sherrie Palm, founder and CEO of the Association for Pelvic Organ Prolapse Support (APOPS) says, “Women do not realize they should be contracting their PC muscles before they pick up their children and that any heavy lifting can create pelvic floor muscle problems, particularly if done too soon after childbirth.”
AAAHH, THE SHOWER
New dads need lots of encouragement and permission to do things their own way. Praise and honor the new dad and he'll come through big time!
personally. You’re not doing anything wrong; other moms just love to dispense helpful information. After all, they’ve been there before!
Shower every day. You’ll feel better and have more energy. Before you have a baby, you might think it's absurd that you would need to be reminded. But after, take care of you!
HUSH, LITTLE MAMA
HELP ME, HELP YOU
OH, THE DRAMA
If someone offers their help (bringing dinner over, doing your laundry, holding the baby while you shower or sleep), let them! Put the "I can do it all myself attitude" on hold for this short time and get used to letting people help you.
IT'S NOT PERSONAL
After you have a baby everyone you meet will offer advice. Don’t take their suggestions
“Sleep when the baby sleeps" is actually excellent advice. Who cares about the cleaning and the laundry, you need sleep! Your hormones are now working overtime adjusting to your postpartum body. You may cry for no reason at all; you will laugh, and you may be blue all within a 10-minute time span. Don't be alarmed — these are your hormones talking. Be kind to yourself. This will pass. If the baby blues persist, consult your doctor.
Baby Guide
ASK AND RECEIVE
This is not the time to hint or hope that your husband understands your wants and needs. Having a baby has not changed his oblivion to the dirty dishes in the sink or the mounds of laundry scattered throughout the house. If you need him to do something, you must ask. “If you tell him specifically what you want, you are much more likely to get it,” says Greg Bishop author of Hit the Ground Crawling (Dads Adventure; 2006). Also, make sure to involve your new daddy with the baby and encourage him! Let him change diapers, get the baby to sleep, give a bottle, entertain, etc. Let him do his own thing with the baby; this is their time to bond. Cassi Denari is a mom and freelance writer.

BIRTH
RIGHT FOR YOU? Water is soothing — especially when you're in it. So, why not deliver your baby in the water, too? The question is, are you a good candidate for it?
Y
ou've heard the nightmare stories about the pain of childbirth, and it scares you to death. Women expecting everywhere seek to find ways to ease the birthing experience. One way is laboring in water ... maybe even a water birth. According to Amandine Bossy, certified doula at Mama Moon Birth Concierge in Nashville, full water birth experiences — not to
be confused with hospital laboring tubs — are only available for home births and births at Baby+Co. in Nashville. They're not for everyone. "Any mother with an uncomplicated pregnancy and labor can be a candidate for water birth," says Margaret Buxton, CNM, DNP, regional director of clinical operations at Baby+Co. "We ensure that Baby is healthy, Mom is without fever or other labor complications, and the family is
Baby Guide
comfortable and knowledgeable about water births." Baby+Co. provides parents information to review prior to birth; it gives details about the risks and benefits of water birth. "If you're being induced for any reason, have gestational diabetes not controlled by diet, or you have preeclampsia you will not be allowed to have a water birth," adds Bossy. (please turn the page)
SPRING 2019
13
IS A WATER BIRTH RIGHT FOR YOU? BENEFITS
If floating in water during pregnancy has benefits, surely a water birth will too, right? According to Buxton, warm water immersion causes major muscles to relax. "In labor this muscle relaxation allows more blood to flow to the uterus, making labor contractions more efficient and effective," says Buxton. The feeling of weightlessness helps to relax you and allows you to rest more deeply between contractions. Warm water also helps the perineum stretch and avoid tears Bossy says. She adds that it reduces stress and anxiety, which regulates blood pressure, reduces pain level and the need for pain medication, speeds up labor and increases energy. In contrast, being in the tub might not offer the optimal pushing position. "If you don’t make progress while pushing, then it might be best to try a different position outside of the tub," says Bossy. And, while laboring in water improves your ability to relax, Buxton says there's no "benefit" to the newborn, and the risks of harm are very minimal.
COMMON RISKS
There are two common concerns people have about water births that can be dispelled, according to Buxton: 1) Being born in water can affect Baby's breathing, and 2) The water itself can create the potential for an infection. The duration of time that Baby remains in the water is minimal.
"
Laboring in the tub is wonderful! It's soothing for both Mom and Baby." — Amandine Bossy
"When you give birth in the water, the provider brings the baby directly up and out of the water and onto your chest," says Buxton. Bossy agrees and says that babies only take their first breath when they're in contact with air. Until then, the placenta continues to provide oxygen through the umbilical cord. "It can take a full minute before a newborn takes his first breath," adds Bossy. When it comes to the water itself, the providers attending to you also keep the water clean and warm. They remove debris from the water during labor as well as drain and refresh the water as needed — especially during longer labors. This helps keep the water at an ideal temperature, which, according to Buxton, should be about mom's body temperature (97º - 99º F). An important thing to remember is the water should be fresh (regular tap) with nothing added to it. A common complication for a water birth at home is exhaustion due to long labor, adds Bossy. In which case, she says you may need to transfer to a hospital to receive an epidural (if you want one) and to get some rest.
PREPPING FOR WATER BIRTH
When it's time to pack your bag that goes with you to delivery
14
SPRING 2019
(if you're not having Baby at home), don't forget these few extra items for laboring in the water or a water birth: bathing suit top or sports bra, hair ties and a robe. What tub is best? Buxton says any type of tub is OK to use. The most important thing is your comfort. Baby+Co. has standard tubs and some area hospitals have side door tubs. However, the hospitals only offer laboring in the tub and then delivering on the hospital bed. If you're planning a home water birth, refer to the "New Parent Services" section on page 20 of this magazine to locate a birthing doula or midwife. Next, consider the tub in your bathroom versus a blow up rental tub. You can situate a rental tub anywhere. Bossy says to use a tub that allows the water to come up to your armpits. And, you must plan ahead for where to put it, how to fill it up and how to drain it. Bossy says home birth midwives provide a list of supplies they need to have for themselves during and after the birth, for the tub and for the baby. Items include a tub (home tub or rental inflatable), a sterile liner for the tub, a brand-new garden hose, two pumps (one to air up the tub, one to pump out the water), an electric kettle and lots of towels.
Baby Guide
The tub should be close to a water faucet as well as on the same floor where you plan to recover postpartum. Bossy says this is best in case an emergency arises or if the pushing phase does not progress well and you need to move to the bed. Buxton says it's important to discuss the plan for complications with your provider prior to labor.
WHEN TO GET IN
While getting in the warm water may feel nice and soothing for labor pains, it can actually slow down contractions if you get in too early. Labor tubs are used mostly when active labor starts. Buxton says this could be when you dilate to five to six centimeters and have strong, regular contractions. As for how long you labor in the tub, that's up to you. "It's all about Mom's preference for how long she stays in," says Buxton. "Some women may want to get out and stretch their legs, or sometimes moms feel a bit overheated after time goes by." So, don't worry if you feel the need to get in and out repeatedly — it's very common during the labor. If you do want to have a calm and more relaxed labor or birth experience, using water is a great option. "Laboring in the tub is wonderful," says Bossy. "It's soothing for both Mom and Baby." Kiera Ashford is associate editor for this publication and mother of three ages 2, 8 and 12.

FIRST BABY: 22 THOUGHTS ON BECOMING PARENTS
Babies have NO manual, but there are a few things to know about them and the important role you play going in. COMPILED BY SUSAN DAY 1. YOU CANNOT SPOIL A BABY. Contrary to what you may hear, a lot of research backs up the claim that you cannot spoil a baby. In fact, holding and responding to your infant is vital to his health and development.
7. TEACH A CHILD TO SLEEP. During Baby's first year of life, you will work at establishing his sleep. But no matter what age your child, establishing a consistent bedtime routine will encourage good sleep habits.
2. VACCINES ARE NOT EVIL. Deadly diseases should only be seen in history books. Vaccines save lives. Modern vaccines are highly effective and safe — serious side effects are extremely rare.
8. YOUR CHILD WILL GIVE YOU READINESS CUES FOR PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING. From weaning to feeding solids to potty training to learning to ride a bike, your child will give you cues as to when he is ready. Stay in tune with him.
3. THERE IS NO "RIGHT TIME" TO WEAN. The American Academy of Pediatrics says ideally babies should exclusively breastfeed for six months, but there is no "right" time to wean since all mamas and babies are different. 4. IF YOU SET HIGH EXPECTATIONS, YOUR KIDS WILL LIVE UP TO THEM. A number of studies confirm that when parents are uninvolved with a child, the child is more likely to turn to risky behaviors and have a poorer relationship with his parents. 5. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. According to Psychology Today, motherly intuition has research to back it up. The clear, unconscious sense that something is wrong is a natural response from you regarding the wellness of your children. You will develop this as you rear your child. 6. IT'S OK TO SAY NO. Setting limits with kids gives them guidelines for behavior and shows them how much you care.
16
SPRING 2019
9. KEEP THE LOVE (AND SEX) ALIVE WITH YOUR MATE AFTER THE BABY COMES. Decades of scientific research into relationships have taught us that good relationships take work. Praise your partner; focus on intimacy when you can; continue to learn about each other's needs; put your relationship at the center of your family life. 10. YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN, AND THAT'S OK. Adjusting to life with a newborn is adjusting to a new normal. Prepare in advance as much as possible for the changes coming and get a support network in place of family and friends. 11. ALWAYS MAKE YOUR CHILD GO POTTY BEFORE YOU GO OUT. Nuff said. 12. YOUR CHILD'S BEST ROAD MAP TO GROWING UP IS YOU. Every time you say or do something, your
Baby Guide
child will observe your behavior. As infants, children gain language and other skills from you. Your challenge is to provide positive examples: show respect to others and yourself; keep a positive outlook; value health; limit anger; practice positive communication skills. 13. DON'T FREAK OUT WHEN YOUR CHILD FALLS DOWN AND HE WON'T EITHER. When your little one starts learning to walk, he will fall down a lot. When he runs and plays he will fall, too. When your child falls, he will look to you to see how to react (if he's not hurt, that is). How YOU react will dictate his response. 14. TALK IT UP WITH BABY. Bring language in during infancy, describing what you're doing as you care for him and responding when your child makes sounds. Build on this as he grows through doing activities together and talking, talking, talking. 15. YELLING AT CHILDREN IS HARMFUL. A 2014 study in The Journal of Child Development says yelling produces results similar to physical punishment for children: increased anxiety, stress and depression. Guard against it. If you have issues with anger, get help in the form of counseling. 1
16. DISTRACTION IS A POWERFUL TOOL. According to child development psychiatrists, the three most important discipline tools to use with children younger than 4 years is supervision, distraction and redirection.
EXPECTING
17. KIDS EAT VERY LITTLE. Fussiness about food is a normal part of childhood development. Once your baby starts eating solid foods with the family, expect him to eat what your family eats. If you have difficulties with this, try not to make it a big deal and avoid force feeding. Discuss with your pediatrician when there are hurdles. 18. STRENGTHEN YOUR PATIENCE. Often when we lose our temper it is because of ourselves, not our children. If you find yourself losing patience a lot, you need coping strategies. It's important to enjoy your kids and learn to choose connection, love and kindness. 19. KISSES AND HUGS FROM YOUR CHILD ARE THE BEST PARTS OF LIFE. Give plenty of affection daily to all members of your family. 20. PLAN AND PREP FOR BABY/TODDLER/ KID OUTINGS THE NIGHT BEFORE. Nuff said.
"
Keep the love (and sex) alive with your mate after the baby comes; put your relationship at the center of your family life."
21. DISCIPLINE STARTS CALMLY AND ENDS CALMLY. Discipline is about guiding and teaching your children — it's not about punishment or anger, according to the book The Parenting Crisis: Parenting Today's Teenagers (Fitzhenry & Whiteside; 2005). It's simply a way of helping kids learn right from wrong and keeping them safe. And it's best done in a calm and controlled manner. 22. THERE WILL BE A LAST TIME YOU PICK UP YOUR CHILD. How's that grab ya? Susan Day is editor of this publication and mom to four fabulous kids.
