hen in the course of human events, a 7-year-old topples his chocolate ice cream, whipped to a pulp, over and onto a precious rug, mothers are rapt. Or at least, at the end of the day, I am. I clean this house. I do the dishes. I wash these floors, feed these dogs, fold these clothes, prepare these meals. So in the evening when the homework’s splayed on the wide mahogany desk in the family room, and on the cramped task-chair accompanied table of my 14-year-old’s room, and even on the kitchen table where my daughter likes to do her work which resulted in the aforementioned 7-year-old’s accident, I want to scream. I want to shout, “What’s the matter with you? Why are you so careless? Haven’t I told you time and time again to be careful?!” Thankfully, I have learned to pause. While the impulse to yell is still there, I have learned to snuff it out. But this was not always the case. While the chocolate ice cream swirls wickedly into the carpet beneath the table, I breathe. I count to 10. Him and his chocolate ice cream! Life with a 7-year-old is, for the most part, pure delight. Seven-year-olds are full of energy, enthusiasm, ideas and imagination. These smart little whips know they are big kids now, well, at least not so little anymore, and they enjoy their independence immensely, taking great pride in it. From birthday to birthday that led to this boy being 7, I have learned everything I need to know about him up to today. And that no little or big boy wants to spill his ice cream. There’s nothing more fun than stirring it round and round into a creamy, gloppy delight. “I’m making a cake!” he had said just moments before his spill, then whoops! The spoon went flying and the bowl crashed down. This boy is my youngest and the fourth of my children. I have learned to enjoy his childhood more and more with each passing moment because I know he will soon be 10 then 15 then ... I dare not say it. It goes too fast. Life as a mother in the 21st century is filled with challenges. Aside from the economic woe and future uncertainty we deal with on a daily basis, we exist in a crux of electronic media and Xbox Live. Our homes should be our salvations, but often they become extensions of our work and school lives. There are not enough sweet moments left at the end of each day for families to grow together. Like so many moms, I live in a whirlwind in search of convenience: I have tossed toys that I could have donated, I have baked cakes from boxes when I’ve wanted to from scratch. It’s hard to prioritize, but the fact is while I can DVR programs on TV that I don’t want to miss, I cannot DVR my children. That is why I have learned to pause. Life’s too short for yelling over small stuff. A stream of ice cream slithers down the leg of a kitchen chair. He looks at me in terror. I breathe. He did not mean for it to happen. “Yuck,” I say. “That’s too bad.” His 7-year-old worried face immediately softens and my heart falls to my toes. I love him so. “Go get a wet towel, honey,” I say, softly. “And then, it’s time for your bedtime story.” Email me your thoughts and suggestions. I'd love to hear from you! susan@daycommail.com

FYI:family health a test for expecting moms

O

ne in eight babies in the U.S. are born prematurely, but there is a test for expectant moms that can detect the likelihood of delivering early, called the fetal fibronectin (fFN) test. The test detects levels of fetal fibronectin, the strongest predictor of preterm birth at less than 32 weeks, according to a study published in The American Journal of Health. Amy Brenner, M.D., of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates in Fairfield says, “The best candidate for the test would be a patient that has symptoms of pre-term labor such as contractions. Women with a history of pre-term delivery may benefit from FFN as well.” Learn more at ffntest.com.

brush up on bike safety

pilepsy and seizures affect nearly 3 million Americans, according to the Epilepsy Foundation. If you’re a parent with epilepsy it can be hard to explain to your children what that means. But Jesse and Michele Black of Florence have plenty of experience, having successfully raised two daughters in spite of Michele’s routine seizures. Says Jesse, “Early in our marriage, we found it was important to plan ahead, and work as a team to communicate.” The two cite teamwork as instrumental to their family. Jesse is featured on Epilepsy Advocate Radio this month, a new resource created for people living with epilepsy, either as patients or caregivers. Learn more about living with epilepsy at epilepsyadvocate.com, where you can also find information on camps for kids and more.

M

ay is National Bicycle Safety Month, a good time to tune-up your two-wheelers and refresh young riders on safety rules. The Trauma Services Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center acknowledges that while bike riding is fun, it can be risky. Keep these points in mind when preparing for a bike ride: • Children under age 10 should not ride on streets without an adult. • Wait until a baby is at least 1 year old before taking him on a ride in a bike trailer. • Make sure your child can stand with both feet on the ground while straddling the bike. • Make sure drivers can see your children — dress them in bright colors during the day and affix reflectors to their bikes. • Make sure all bicyclists wear properly-fitting helmets that meet the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standard. Helmets should fit snugly, cover the top of the forehead, and the strap should fit snugly under the chin and pull the helmet down when your child opens her mouth. • Wear the helmet every time you ride, and only when you ride, and be sure to replace it after a crash.

e strolled past the ice cream shop, the movie theater and the pizza place, returning smiles and waves to people passing by. We plopped our towels on the wall, I arranged a chair to face the water, and the kids dashed down to the beach. We were enjoying a friendly and unique vacation at Lakeside, the Chautauqua on Lake Erie. The Lakeside, in Marblehead, Ohio, is one of the few remaining Chautauqua communities, a movement that began in the 1870s and created resorts that blend summer recreation with religious observance, education and culture. Part of the education included sailing lessons for kids, and we enjoyed watching several boat races throughout our stay. We also enjoyed the use of shared shovels, pails, and other toys on the small beach. My bunch started building a trench, and other kids joined in, creating a sandy waterway that filled and emptied with the tide. They took breaks in the lake or climbed the ladder for a splash in the pool. While I watched and relaxed, my husband took our youngest to the park, and later they rented a bicycle built for two. Meanwhile, I grew thirsty just as a girl about 9 years old arrived with a clipboard and a menu from Dockside, Lakeside’s only daily lakefront dining that features light meals and snacks. The food was good, and reasonably priced, but we mostly loved that we could eat in our swimsuits. We also tried The Patio, which had good food, and great slushies, according to the kids, but our favorite Lakeside place was Sloopy’s Sports Café, boasting award-winning pizza. For breakfasts, we enjoyed the complimentary meal at the Fountain Inn, a nice spread of muffins, bagels, fresh fruit, cereal and yogurt. And while our rooms at the Inn were outdated, Lakeside is not about the accommodations. It’s about the beautiful lake, the beach, community and activities. Lectures for adults, crafts, walking tours, nature programs, shuffleboard, sailing lessons, concerts and more are included with the purchase of a pricey but worthwhile gate pass, required to enter the resort.

Thrills & Spins The next day meant Cedar Point, “the Rollercoaster Capital of the World.” Peanuts’ favorites Sally and Lucy greeted us, giving us a preview to the new Planet Snoopy at Kings Island. We studied maps and decided to split up, our oldest going with Dad to ride roller coasters, while I took the rest on tamer rides. The Sky Ride gave us a relaxing tour of the park and a chance to plan our day. Turnpike Cars and Cadillac Cars came next, and then my favorite, Cedar Downs, a speedy racehorse Merry Go Round. The Gemini Children’s Area features fast lines and kid favorites, like Bumper Boats and the Frog Hopper, and the kids loved the Balloon Ride at Camp Snoopy. We took a spin on the Ferris Wheel and then met up at the Midway Market, featuring an all-you-can-eat buffet and free refills on drinks. We stayed together to see the ice skating show, where the comfortable air-conditioned theater made up for the silly stage antics. With little time left at the park, my husband and I switched kids and I rode roller coasters with our oldest. We dashed to Magnum. In 1989, it was the tallest, fastest roller coaster in the world, at 205 feet tall with speeds of 72 miles per hour. Twenty years later, we found it fun and fast, and with a fast line, too. We had time for one more. We ran to another line. I seemed to be the oldest female in line. I watched people and rides. I saw a ride with dragster-style trains zip straight up, absolutely vertically, at some ridiculous speed of like, 120 mph, then hang there, above everything in the park, everything, and then spiral down. It looked terrifying. And I said so. Then I asked my son, “Did you ride that?” He looked at me, incredulous. “You told me to pick my favorite. I did. Top Thrill Dragster. That’s what we’re in line for.” J Barbara Littner David is a local writer and mother of five. She is also the author of Cincinnati Trips for Kids, a collection of more than 40 great Cincinnati-area attractions.

BIRTHDAYS for less Great ideas from local moms on how to throw terrific parties.

B Y G I N A H O LT

H

aving a child’s birthday party can be stressful, time consuming and expensive, but it doesn’t have to be! I asked my 10-year-old daughter, Andi, and my 8-year-old son, Joey, to tell me what their favorite birthday party to date was. Andi says her favorite party was the Barbie Tea Party she had at home for her fifth birthday. Barbie, a friend of mine who Andi didn’t know dressed in a bridesmaid dress and attended the party. “Barbie” helped serve tea (Kool-Aid) and flower-shaped finger sandwiches to guests who came in their tea party clothes. “Barbie” also made tea party hats with the girls, using plastic flowers, buttons, ribbons and straw hats from the dollar store. We didn’t have goody bags since each girl was able to take her hat home. After tea, the craft and cake, the girls jumped roped in the yard until their parents arrived. The entire party cost about $50. My son chose his Hollywood party as his favorite. The 15 guests were asked to come as their favorite movie or rock star. As they arrived, their picture was taken walking the red carpet (an inexpensive piece of red fabric from the fabric store placed in the entry). We played the paparazzi dance — you fall to the ground to hide from the paparazzi when the music stops. All of the music consisted of songs from famous movies. Hollywood charades was a big hit. Each child pulled a star’s name out of a hat and had to act that person out while the other children guessed

birthday bonanza who they were. The children loved the Oscars ceremony. I purchased mini trophies (eight in a pack) at the dollar store. We made labels such as best dressed, funniest costume and best hair and then handed one out to each kid. The cake was an actual movie theater with a big screen, seats (black licorice), an aisle in the middle (Fruit Roll Up) and little lights (yellow Dots) down the isle way. The goody bags consisted of movie theater style candy, a bag of popcorn and sunglasses. The entire party cost about $75. My friends and I love having birthday parties for our kids but in order to do so, we have to find creative ways to make sure everyone has fun while not spending a lot. Here are some ideas from other local moms:

Gross Out Bobbi Jo Kraus, Fort Thomas mother of three, had a Fear Factor Party for her teenage daughter a few years ago. She picked up “left over” meats like eyeballs and other gross stuff from a local butcher. The girls would touch, smell and sometimes even taste to figure out what the items were. “This was the best party we ever did,” she says. “It cost very little and the girls still talk about it.”

Christmas in February Amy Schardein, Cincinnati mother of two, had a Christmas party for her daughter’s, Lilly, third birthday. Lilly was sad when the holidays were over so Amy bought items on clearance for the goody bags, used the holiday decorations and invited the girls to wear their Christmas dresses. “It was simple and they all loved it,” says Amy. “All her presents were wrapped in holiday paper and we spent very little on decorations.”

Pajama Brunch Sleepovers can be hard since no one actually sleeps so a pajama brunch is just the right thing! Rene Heinrich, Highland Heights mother of two (and one on the way), invited her daughter’s friends to come around 10 a.m. in their pajamas for dancing, a story circle, a pillow fight and breakfast, which included bagels, donuts and fruit salad.

Free Mall Day & Football Fever Kim Balser, Fort Thomas mother of two, took 12 girls to the mall and didn’t spend a dime! The girls went on a scavenger hunt to find things like a hanger, paper clip, receipts, a picture of themselves in front of a store window, a store application, etc. They stopped by Dairy Queen for a free cone sample and were given a picture of the whole group in front of the mall as a party favor. Kim did have the girls back to her house for a sleepover but the mall trip alone made for a great party. For her son, Kim asked a few of the local high school football players to play ball in the yard with the boys for a bit and pose for a picture. The football players were flattered to be asked to donate their time that way.

Indiana Jones in the Park Amy Lococo, Cincinnati mother of two, had her son’s Indiana Jones party at a local park. For party favors, she found small satchel bags for only a few dollars at a local discount store and filled them with a compass, a whistle and candy, all from the dollar store. She paid a nominal fee for the park shelter and took the kids on an adventure through the park trails.

Getting Buggy & Horsing Around Cathy Ross, Fort Thomas mother of two, has had two very creative parties. Although one can only be offered every 17 years, the kids loved it. Her daugh-

ter Helen had a cicada party the last time the cicadas were in town! Everything about the party was buggy, including the cake! Her daughter Adele had a Steeple Chase party in the backyard for her seventh birthday. The obstacle course was made up of hula-hoops, plastic cones and a few hay bales that were used for lawn purposes after the party. The girls did the course over and over trying to improve their time.

Spa Party for Any Age Both Julie Hale, Florence mother of four, and Kim Balser have had spa parties for their daughters. Julie had friends do the 8-year-old girls’ hair, nails and makeup with supplies Julie already had. She did buy everyone their own comb and they used Q-tips to apply the makeup. Then the girls enjoyed a great dance party. Kim supplied stuff for mini pedis and facials for the pre-teen girls who enjoyed getting their nails done while talking about boys.

Fire Safety Hale also asked the local fire department to stop by her home for her son’s birthday party and they did. The firefighters brought coloring books, helmets and lots of information for the guests. The children were able to sit in the truck and try on the equipment. “It was a great, cheap party!” she said.

When Home Isn’t An Option Having a party at home isn’t always an option but some places can be really expensive. I have found that places like the YMCA offer fun children’s parties at very reasonable prices (less than $100). The park is always a great option because it’s free unless you want to book the shelter, which is usually a nominal fee. A scavenger hunt through Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park in Hamilton would be inexpensive and fun. The Cincinnati Conservatory and the Cincinnati Art Museum are also free. A quiet scavenger hunt at either of these (find a specific flower or painting) could be a lot of fun. Libraries offer free children’s programming such as magicians, plays, bilingual events, cooking programs and much more. Pick up a calendar or visit the Web site to see what’s coming up and register your party guests for the event. Or, instead of bringing gifts, have each child bring a pet item and then take the children to visit the local animal shelter and donate their items. Then stop by a local ice cream shop to sing happy birthday and have a treat.

A Few More Tips to Save Money Use household items, like your child’s toys, to decorate the party area. Make the cake yourself and even let the birthday child decorate it. Take a photo of the entire group and send the prints (usually less than 20 cents each) with a note on the back as the thank you card. You can also print the photos during the party, put them in inexpensive frames from a discount store, and send them home with the guests as the party favor. Most parents prefer for their children to not have small trinkets that will just be thrown away and candy. Stop by a discount store to find one nicer item to give each child. A bug catcher from the dollar store would be perfect for a bug or outdoor-themed party. A nail file and hand lotion is great for almost any girl party. A party should be fun for the birthday child, the guests and the parents, and it doesn’t need to break the bank. So start thinking outside the box and have a blast planning your child’s next big party! J Gina Holt is a local writer and mother of two.

Top Party Poopers BY SHERRY HANG

It’s your child’s special day and all you want is for her to have fun and for the party to go smoothly. But that doesn’t always happen. Be prepared for what may come.

U

nexpected guests, jealous siblings, temper tantrums and an ungrateful birthday child are all potential party poopers, and can turn even the best-laid plans topsy-turvy. But a few anticipatory measures and a willingness to stay flexible will keep your party hopping.

1

The Extra Guest(s)

2

Bad Timing

Who hasn’t thrown a party, only to have a parent drop off a sibling (or two) with the invited guest? Or maybe a parent didn’t RSVP, but then showed up anyway. First things first — make it clear on the invitation exactly who is invited. If you’re throwing a party for a 3-year-old, the last thing you need are a gang of 8-year-olds re-enacting Star Wars. It’s OK to write a note that says sorry, but you just can’t accommodate older siblings. Next, keep your own sanity in mind. Although the standard rule is to invite the same number of people as your child’s age, that rule is often the first one to be tossed. You don’t need to invite your second cousin’s son or your daughter’s best friend’s little brother if you’re not especially close. The party is for your child and depending on his age and comfort level, too many people might overwhelm him. Keep guests at a minimum and, if necessary, hold a separate gathering for family members.

Plenty of party meltdowns happen because children are tired and in need of a nap. Time your party appropriately so kids are at their best. Charlie Cadabra, a children’s entertainer for more than 30 years, advises that parents aim for earlier in the day. (please turn the page)

birthday bonanza “The birthday child is cranked up all day long, and they are wiped out by the time evening comes around.” He adds that it can be tough to get a kid to take a nap on the big day, making a late afternoon party even more susceptible to meltdowns. Consider how long your party will last. A two-hour party allows 15 - 20 minutes for late arrivals and the putting away of coats, etc., plus 45 minutes for cake and ice cream, leaving you with about an hour for activities and the opening of presents.

3

Pets

4

Sibling Rivalry

5

To Open or Not?

Your dog might be the friendliest dog in Greater Cincinnati, but that doesn’t always make him a welcome guest. Aside from kids who aren’t comfortable around animals, your pet could prove a distraction when you’re playing a game, serving up cake, or letting the entertainment do their job. Your best bet is to keep Fido away from the action.

It’s easy to feel left out at a party for someone else, so take some preventative measures to keep siblings from stealing the spotlight. Have a talk leading up to the party and reassure siblings that they will have their own party for their birthdays. Amy Clinkenbeard, a Florence mother of two, says she likes to give a gift to each of her daughters on party day so that neither of them feels left out. “I also do treat bags for all the kids and give those out when the birthday girl opens her presents,” she says.

There are two schools of thought on opening presents during the party. One is that guests enjoy seeing the party child open their presents so they can see the reaction. The second advises that you wait, since the reaction your child gives may not be the one you want guests to see! “I can see it both ways,” says Aimee McBride, owner of Party Hoppers, an indoor party center. “But I think kids like to see their friends open their gift.” The key is to be organized, she says. And it might not hurt to have a talk with your child before the party starts, reminding him that the guests chose their gifts carefully, that it wouldn’t be very nice to say he didn’t like it, and that he should take the time to thank each person.

6

Entertainer Nightmares

Ask almost any entertainer if their show involves the children, and they’ll likely tell you yes. Your next question, according to Charlie Cadabra, should be, “How?” “Kids love to help, they want to be involved,” he says, adding that if the entertainer you are considering can’t answer your questions in a meaningful way, audience participation is probably kept at a minimum. Ask if the entire audience gets involved, if the birthday child is made to feel special, and if the entertainer works to create photo opportunities. You paid good money for professional entertainment, but there are a few things you can do to help

18 May 2010

him or her give his best performance, according to Charlie Cadabra. Don’t schedule the entertainer at the beginning of the party — give your guests time to arrive. Have a designated area for the show that is free and clear of distractions (see Party Pooper #3). Keep the designated area indoors whenever possible — sitting outside on a very warm or bright day can make it hard to see the show, and may even be potentially dangerous: Charlie Cadabra gets help from Harvey, a live rabbit, who hides out for part of the show in a small box that heats up quickly.

7

Refreshments

8

All By Yourself

Fortunately, kids are pretty easy to please when it comes to snacks. You don’t need to go overboard with a full-blown meal. Stick to cake, ice cream and drinks, especially for parties lasting only an hour or so. “I sometimes see moms overdo it with food,” says McBride, “but you can really keep it simple. Kids are usually more interested in playing anyway.”

Unless you are Super Mom, don’t throw a party on your own. Feel free to ask for help so you can enjoy the day as well. “Get a second mom or a babysitter from the neighborhood,” says McBride. “I see kids dropped off all the time with only one mom to look after them, and then the moms can’t enjoy the party because they’re busy the whole time.” Bring along a favorite babysitter or family member so your little one has someone familiar to turn to in case you are busy, get older siblings to be in charge of games or photos, and don’t be afraid to ask another mom to help (just be prepared to return the favor!).

Tips for a Successful Birthday Party

• Prepare Your Child for the Party: Discuss good manners and acceptable behavior. • Siblings and Family Involvement: Give your other children a little attention on the big day and get the whole family involved by assigning duties to each member. • Balloons: Use them to mark your house for those who have never visited before. • Refreshments: Keep it simple — anything more than cake, ice cream and drinks at a children’s party is probably unnecessary. • Protect Your Pets: Confine them to another part of the house, away from rough-playing children and where they don’t distract from the entertainment. • Pictures: Take a photo of each guest with the birthday child. 9

Games Gone Wrong

Eventually children have to learn that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but do they really need to learn it at a party? Plan for games where everyone can win or the guests accomplish a goal as a group. It’s also wise to plan for more activities and games than you think you’ll need. You never know how fast kids might breeze through a craft, and you don’t want to be stuck with nothing for them to do. If you don’t get to a planned party game, just tuck it away and plan on using it next time.

10

Away From Home

When hosting a party at an away-from-home facility, be sure to consider all your guests, says McBride. If the facility is designed for children, keep the guest list limited to the younger set. Grandma and Grandpa might want to share in the special day, but they might be more comfortable coming by the house later rather than hanging out in a noisy play center. And although this also applies for at-home parties, make sure you have parents’ cell phone numbers in case you need to reach them in a hurry. After all, some kids just aren’t ready to party, and it’s best to be prepared! J
