proud Mommy moments

I

f you have children you are bound to have a heaping amount of proud mommy moments. I know I do. Some of them are HUGE moments that can make you tear up, and lots are just little moments that may seem like nothing at all through the eyes of anyone else. It’s those sweet moments of your child’s own choosing to do something nice or right. I had one such moment just the other day …. We were camping and having a blast. Our daughter, the oldest, made several new friends from around the campground. They would all come to the playground and play games, swing, talk … anything at all and they all had smiles on their faces all day long. Our son, almost 3 years old, did the same. There were a couple of little boys that decided to come check out the gathering of kids at the playground. They even brought a few of their own toys to play with. One of the boys walked right up to mine and started talking to him and handed him a toy. My little guy looked back at me and beamed with excitement. Off they went playing and running around. All the children played until it grew dark and were beckoned back to their own campsite for dinner and bedtime. After everyone had left, my little guy was sad. He was having so much fun. He moped around a bit on the playground and then he found a toy. He knew it was one of the other little boy’s. He came running up and showed us what he found and then pointed to the campsite where the other little boys were at and said he wanted to take it back to him. Nana was with us and she told him what a good boy he was and that she’d walk with him to their campsite. He wanted to make sure the little boy didn’t lose his toy. I was so proud of him. Some kids would just look at the toy and leave it alone. Some would take it for themselves. Then there are the ones who just want to do the right thing. He wanted to make that little boy happy and be his friend. Our daughter also shared in a proud mommy moment that day. She, too, was playing with her new friends. A few of them brought over some games to play and she listened to the instructions and played her best. She shared so well with her new friends that not one of them felt left out. She talked to them and they all — even the older girls — talked like they had known each other for a long time. She would even throw a glance here and there at her brother to make sure he was OK and having fun. Yep, I have my share of proud mommy moments and I know I’ll have lots more to come, too. You never know when they’ll happen, but if you just keep your watchful eye on them, you’re bound to see many little moments and sometimes over-joyous big ones, too.

Organizations Doing Good in Cincinnati!

NEWS

Lots of organizations are benefiting the community these days, whether they’re hosting a fundraiser, making a donation, or incorporating philanthropy into their business plan. Learn more about how to support them!

BY SHERRY HANG

The Children’s Theatre of Mason (CTM) presents The Little Mermaid Jr., and in honor of the program’s 10 year anniversary, CTM is donating 500 tickets to the Sunday, May 12 Mother’s Day performance, thanks to counselors and teachers at Mason, Kings, Lakota, Lebanon and Milford Schools. “Over the past 10 years, we’ve been blessed to work with more than 1,000 kids on 23 different productions, playing to more than 50,000 people throughout Greater Cincinnati,” said Karen Kilgore, president of The Children’s Theatre of Mason. “With The Little Mermaid Jr. we want to give back and share a wonderful theatre experience with young people in our community who may have never had the chance to enjoy it.” The production runs for five shows at Mason High School, 7 p.m. May 10, 2 and 7 p.m. May 11, and 1 and 5 p.m. May 12. Tickets are $10. Visit childrenstheatreofmason.com.

CancerFree KIDS hosts the 7th annual

Butterfly Walk & 5K on Saturday, May 11 at Cottell Park (5847 Irwin-Simpson Road). Whether you walk, run, or just enjoy the event’s festivities, you’ll still be helping to raise funds to support research for pediatric cancers. This year’s event promises plenty of activities, including the 5K Run, a Survivor Ceremony, a Junior Jog, and a fun festival that lasts into the afternoon. Registration begins at 8 a.m., or sign up online at butterflywalk.com.

Kona Ice wheels into the East Side of Cincinnati, bringing cool frozen treats served right out of a tiki hut truck. Brought to town by Randall Coultas and Rick Persichetti, Kona Ice has a built-in “gives back” program so you can feel just as good as your icy treat tastes. When the truck stops at local schools, baseball leagues, church events, a portion of the proceeds will benefit those same organizations. Nationwide, Kona Ice has donated more than $10 million to community organizations. To learn more, or to rent the truck for your party or festival, call 513-201-7589 or visit kona-ice.com.

New to Motherhood? eing a new mom can be overwhelming, especially if family and friends aren’t nearby to lend their support. The good news is that Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky are home to dozens of MOMS Club chapters. These groups for at-home mothers offer meetings for moms and their little ones, support for those days when you need some extra advice (or just to vent your frustrations), and minimal club fees. Members can enjoy guest speakers, casual get-togethers, family outings, playgroups, and service projects. Find a local chapter at momsclub.org.

L

ocal “mompreneurs” Amber Fowler and Candice Peters want to help you keep your family fit, and that starts with YOU! The two launched Fit Mo mmies just last month — an outdoor fitness class that lets you bring your tots to the class, whether they’re in a stroller or already on a bike. Or, you can even leave the babies at home and just come work out with other fit-minded mommies. Power walking and circuit training classes meet several days a week at parks in Hyde Park and Loveland, and costs $59 per month for unlimited sessions. Call 513-399-7275 or visit thefitmommies.com.

Early summer is a great time to bring your child in for their yearly physical exam. It’s also a good time to get camp and school forms filled out. Annual exams allow the provider to have a long term history with your child. They will provide wellness guidance, vaccine info, as well as any emotional or development issues he/she may be having. IT’S SNEEZIN’ SEASON

Be prepared for runny noses and itchy eyes!

S

easonal allergies getting your child down? Join the club! Allergies are a reaction that begins in the immune system, says John Seyerle, M.D., an allergist with Allergy & Asthma Care, Inc. Seyerle says that while our immune systems are designed to protect us from infection, an allergic reaction is triggered when the immune system mistakes a substance — like pollen or mold — for something harmful. There are three ways to treat allergies, according to Seyerle: Avoid exposure to the allergen Wear hats and sunglasses when the pollen count is high; wash hands after playing. Over-the-counter medications Anti-histamines, eye drops and nasal sprays may be helpful. Visit to the allergist When over-the-counter meds don’t solve your child’s allergy problem, see your pediatrician. He’ll want to know your child’s symptoms like itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, or breathing trouble with exercise or vigorous play. If your child is 4 or older and snif fles and sputters throughout the first few weeks of spring,

an allergy to a specific pollen is probably to blame. Children typically have a “hay fever” season with symptoms rising along with increased levels of outdoor pollen related to ragweed, grass, weeds and trees as well as mold spores. But life indoors can just as easily trigger allergies. Some children are bothered by dust mites — microscopic spider-like creatures that nestle where there’s food for them (flakes of human skin!). Some kids react to pet dander with cats and dogs, but guinea pigs, gerbils, rabbits and other pets can trigger allergies, too. If you can easily identify what triggers your child’s symptoms, great! You can strive to prevent exposure and be prepared for reactions when they strike. “Find out what you are allergic to, avoid it, and have a plan for when you are exposed,” says Seyerle. But if you’re not sure what’s triggering your child’s reactions, it may be time to do some testing. With testing, the doctor determines what to test then places a small amount of the substance on your child’s arm. Fifteen minutes later, if a small, red, raised area appears, you’ve found what your child’s allergic to. Of course that sounds relatively easy, when in fact it often is not. Allergies to food present a longer, lengthier testing process.

CF 06-13 (FYI-NEWS).indd 11

Allergy Shots? Oh no! When allergies are extremely difficult to manage, your doctor may suggest immunotherapy for your child. By injecting small amounts of the allergen into your child’s body on a regular basis, and at increased doses, his body will eventually grow used to the allergen and the immune system will learn not to trigger a reaction. A weekly “build-up” phase will eventually transition into injections that happen about every four weeks. “Immunotherapy can improve symptoms by 80 percent,” says Seyerle, adding that the process can also reduce your child’s chances of developing new allergies or asthma. Safe for children as young as 4 year old,“It’s not so much about treating the symptoms, as it is about protecting your child from future complications.”

RUINS AT MUS

CANCÚN with kids!

BY KIERA ASHFORD

Mayan ruins, mouthwatering dishes and so much more ... all while staying at the beautiful CasaMagna Marriott Cancún Resort.

CANCÚN

“L

ast summer, I got to see an ancient city, swim in the ocean and sleep in a hotel ... in MEXICO!” This is what your kids will be telling their classmates next fall after taking a much-anticipated family vacation to CasaMagna Marriott Cancún Resort in Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico (+52 55 1102 2025; marriott.com/hotels/travel/ cunmx-casamagna-marriott-cancun-resort). After the flight, we were ready to have some fun! Once we arrived at CasaMagna, we were taken aback by its beauty. Although you’ve stepped into a resort full of elegance, remember that children are welcome here. It’s nice to see giggling little ones enjoying a pristine setting that’s usually thought of as adult only. Don’t worry, there’s plenty to do at this family-friendly resort.

SWIM LIKE A FISH Did you see the ocean outside? Go on, take a look. The water’s so blue and clear. It’s a blue that seems to have been made just for these pristine white beaches. Aside from the out-of-this-world sea, families can also swim in the pools at CasaMagna. From either the main pool or the kids’ pool — which is sized just right for little ones — you are sure to get water logged. If the kiddos are big enough, parents can soak in the hot tub and watch them swim in the pool — the hot tub is front and center at the main pool. Towels? Just pick them up poolside for use at the pools and beach.

RELAXATION AND FUN FOR ALL After chasing the kids around for a bit, parents are sure to want ... need ... a nice, long massage. CasaMagna and JW Marriott Cancún Resort & Spa (sister resort connected to CasaMagna) offer several spa packages for adults. At JW, children ages 6 - 16 years can take advantage of the spa

salon and ages 16 - 17 years can enjoy spa treatments (must be accompanied by an adult), and can charge it to your room at CasaMagna! The kids’ menu at the spa includes facials, hair styling and manicures (age restrictions on each). The Good Clean Fun: Pre-Teen Skincare for ages 6 - 12 is a 30-minute facial that’s great for first timers and includes cleansing, chocolate mask and sunscreen. It’s a great way to pamper your child and make her feel special. The resort also offers a Marriott Kids Program — parents must remain on site at the resort — which offers daily supervised activities for ages 4 -12 from 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. seven days a week for just $35 USD per child. Activities include piñata making, puppets, games, arts and crafts, pool time and more! This is perfect for entertaining the kids while Mom and Dad get some pampering at the spa. In addition, the resort offers babysitting services.

DELICIOUS DISHES There are several fine restaurants located on the CasaMagna property. My favorite is the La Capilla Argentina Steakhouse. The steak is seasoned to perfection ... so don’t even think about dipping it in one of the condiments they provide. It’s a casual restaurant and the food is oh so yummy! It’s open for breakfast and dinner. There’s also Champions Sports Bar, Mikado Japanese Teppan Yaki and Sasi Thai. Even though you’re staying at the CasaMagna, you can still visit the restaurants at JW. Now you have even more delicious dishes to explore with your family. The breakfast buffet at Sedona Grill is amazing! I’ve never seen so many choices for breakfast including fresh guacamole and chips — you can never have enough of that!

family GETAWAY

SITES TO RELISH If your family’s getting a little stir crazy, don’t worry. Visit the front desk and they’ll help you plan the perfect day out — if you haven’t already planned it as part of your package. A must see is the Museo Maya de Cancún (+52 998 883 3671; inah.gob.mx/paseos/museomaya/ tour.html), part of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The architecture of the museum itself is stunning. Walk around the indoor exhibit and view several amazing artifacts. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, head outside to experience what lies beneath the cover of the trees. I was absolutely floored by the fact that there were beautifully intact ruins right in the heart of the resort district in Cancún. Who would have thought you would be able to see ruins with a resort in the background? Certainly not me! If you want to see more of the Mayan ruins and all of their wonder, schedule a trip to Tulum (Intermar Caribe/onsite • +52 998 881 2009). Here, you can walk around the area and see more of the exquisitely crafted buildings created long ago. Be sure to take your bathing suit, as the Mayan’s had a knack for building ocean-front properties. You can take a dip in the sea where the Mayan’s once did. Take advantage of all that the resort has to offer in the way of special packages and outings. They can cater your trip to fit your specific family needs and wants. From a variety of places to swim, eat, relax and have fun, the entire family is sure to create ever-lasting memories at CasaMagna Marriott Cancún Resort in Cancún.  Kiera Ashford is managing editor for this publication and mother of two ages 6 and 2-and-a-half.

GOODY BAG IDEAS

These can be a real challenge — try these tips for goody bag awesomeness!

1. GIVE A GIFT THAT LASTS — art supplies like stickers, a coloring book and a small pack of crayons will give your guests something to continue the fun at home.

2. KIDS LOVE CANDY — Believe it or not, you can never go

“We’ve done a bug theme before. Very cute! You can get bug boxes at the dollar store and b uy a bunch of plastic or stretchy bugs and throw them around the yard, then the kids fill up their boxes on a bung hunt. 4. FUN CONTAINERS — Put your goody in a reusable container, like a water bottle, lunchbox or pencil pouch.

5. ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH — a CD of his favorite songs is easy to compile and make, and gets the birthday child involved in party planning.

FOR AGES 3 - 4 BOOMER-WHITZ (FROM MOMSWHOTHINK.COM) Show your party guests a small object, then send them out of the area while you hide it (keep at least part of the object visible, as this game is something of a combination of “Hide & Seek” and “I Spy”). Bring the kids back and let them hunt for the object. The first child to find it must call out “BoomerWhitz!” Then he gets to hide the object for the next round. This can be played indoors or out.

FOR AGES 5 - 6 SWITCHEROO (FROM SPOONFUL.COM) Collect a bunch of accessories like jewelry, scarves, ribbons, sunglasses, hats, gloves, etc. Divide your party into two teams. Team A will choose two or three players to put on as many of the accessories as they can in 30 seconds while both teams watch. The dressed up players are then taken into another area to trade some of their accessories with each other . When they return, their own team members get two minutes to guess the switches (one point per correct answer). When time is called, the other team tries to earn points by guessing what the first team missed. Then it’s time for Team B to dress their own players!

Before the party, make simple cardboard airplanes with each party guest’s name on them. Hang a map on the wall and mark a “landing strip” with a push-pin or circle. Line up kids on the other side of the room, and create an obstacle course with chairs, cushions, empty boxes, etc. Let the players look over the course, then blindfold them, one at a time, as they attempt to navigate the course and safely land their plane. The child who lands closest to the landing strip wins!

The quality of her work speaks for itself. The dentistry that she performs is flawless. She also takes the time and cares so much about each and every one of her patients and always goes above and beyond. She is great with all ages and brings a fun aspect to dentistry. I have so much confidence in Dr. Tara that I have brought my whole family (immediate and extended) to her. She brings dentistry to a whole new level.

PEDIATRIC DENTISTS

SPECIALISTS Kara Shah, M.D., Ph.D. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Director of Dermatology Cincinnati Dr. Shah has treated my son for the past year, and I can honestly say she is the most dedicated and caring physician I have ever met. While most physicians who have cared for our family have limited time, Dr. Shah took our son’s treatment ups and downs seriously and has never hesitated in her care, no matter the hour or situation. During one particularly difficult week for our son, Dr. Shah was out of town, but she stayed in contact with her office and even exchanged e-mails with our family. It was only afterward that I found out she was at her own father’s funeral. Dr. Shah is a wonderful physician, but she is also a wife and mother that has to balance work and home, illness and loss, like so many of the families she cares for at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. The empathy and care she gives to her patients and their families are abundant and the love she has for her work is evident. It’s a privilege to know her and to have her care for our family. Eric M. Soper, DDS

Jocelyn Collins, M.D.

The Pedatric Dental Center Burlington, KY Dr. Soper provides excellent oral healthcare to children. A dad himself, he understands the importance of teaching my energetic boys the importance of caring for their oral health through brushing, flossing, maintaining a balanced diet and limiting snacking. He taught me as a mom how to prevent “bottle tooth decay” by not giving my children a bottle in bed before falling asleep. It is evident that Dr. Soper cares about the outcome of my children’s oral health.

UC Department of Surgery Cincinnati Dr. Collins has an excellent bedside manner and truly cares for her patients. She is willing to go above and beyond for her patients. Her staff is right there with her and always has the patients’ needs as a priority. I have never had a doctor and staff that was amazing as Dr. Collins’ office.

David Hom, M.D. Professor & Director of Facial Reconstruction & Facial Plastic Surgery, UC Health West Chester He’s honest and spends time with his patient no matter the situation. He will see all patients, even if there are no openings and he’ll call you back personally with concerns. TE

FAMILY PRACTICE Katherine Sheridan, M.D. Madeira Family Health Cincinnati She really cares about the health and wellbeing of all of her patients. She goes out of her way to administer healthcare, and is very knowledgeable about myriad conditions. She gives sound healthcare advice, is always pleasant and is very persistent. Susan Teeter

Jon Baker, DO Indian Creek Physicians Ross When we took our son into the doctor for pain in his legs and feet, Dr. Jon Baker took the time to thoroughly evaluate the cause of his pain. Other healthcare providers could have just dismissed his complaints as a young child having “growing pains” or perhaps sports related aches and pains. However, Dr. Baker reviewed our son’s medical history and sent him for additional (please turn the page)

What to do when mealtime is a hassle

W

ell-meaning adults often view a child’s odd food and eating behaviors as a problem. However, childhood food jags, a fear of new foods, and other feeding challenges are usually a part of normal development. There’s no need to worry if a child skips a meal or won’t eat the vegetables on his or her plate. Keep the big picture in mind. Offer a variety of healthy, nourishing foods. Be creative! A variety of colors, kid-friendly shaped foods, and foods arranged on the plate in an appealing manner can entice children to try foods they might otherwise avoid. Provide nutritious snacks to help round out picky eating habits during meals. Over time, a child will get everything needed to grow and develop normally. Do not force your children to eat. While parents are the best judges of what children should eat and when, children are the best judges of how much they should eat. Food should be used as nourishment, not as a reward or punishment. In the long run, food rewards or bribes usually create more problems than they solve. Children often use the table as a stage for showing their independence. Sometimes food is not the issue at all. The eating process is just one more way children learn about the world.

Q A

What is a good age fo r children to train for their sport?

Involving children in sports provides many benefits such as incr eased strength and flexibility, healthy ha bits and increased confidence. Before tr aining specifically for a single sport it is important for your child to show the ab ility to take direction in their training, take responsibility and show an interest in pa rticipation. Having the maturity to be ab le to correctly perform technique and skills that are required by their respective activ ities is essential for safe participation. Dr. McClung
