ver the years I’ve experienced Christmas in dif ferent ways, but I always start out with high expectations because I love Christmas. I loved it when I was a child, giving and getting, and now I love sharing it with my family. But there was one Christmas in particular that I’ll never forget. Now that my firstborn’s a freshman in college — I can marvel at the memory. I had my first baby on December 17. It was a bitter cold Friday night and there were lots of holiday parties going on — in fact, my obstetrician was hoping to get to one because at one point during my afternoon labor he gave the order to “up” the pitocin drip in my IV which rapidly increased my contractions. My doctor came in to deliver Alexandra wearing a full body shield ... later it dawned on me that he wore party clothes underneath. But that was just the tip of the memory I recall. I was in and out of the hospital in a speedy 24 hours after a lactation nurse pronounced us good to go — but we were not. At home alone with Alexandra, I didn’t know she wasn’t latching on. I popped a pacifier in her mouth. I held her in my Baby Bjorn front ways and vacuummed because my in laws were soon to arrive. I was crazy, sleep deprived ... and something more ... ignorant? How much I loved this little baby, but how much I wanted everything to be perfect. And for my family to see me as a success! I was way of f. Alexandra was NOT getting what she needed and soon we were both choking with tears and frustration — at just about the time my mom-in-law pulled into town. Here I was, trying to be the picture of perfect and I was an utter failure. I was determined to breastfeed, but I couldn’t relax. Over the phone the lactation consultant told me heating pads would help as would ice. That confused me further. I had no Christmas presents, was behind on decorating and baking and everything was caving in around me — including my expectations. That’s when I stopped everything and took to my bed with the baby . We would nurse until the cows came home. Round the clock. When she actually clamped down — latched — it was a new mother miracle. Come Christmas Eve, my mom-in-law had wonderful things simmering in the kitchen, piles of packages she had brought under the tree and I was only beginning to get the knack of breastfeeding ... finally experiencing let down, but still a mess. An over-achiever, I was nursing every hour and having a hard time getting used to not being available for anything else. When my husband came home from work that night, I coaxed him into a private meeting in our bedroom, him standing, me in the covers with our infant. “I have no presents! W e don’t have anything to give anyone!,” I wailed. I was falling apart. He was young, working hard, putting in long hours, his hair was every which way , tie askew, and all he wanted to do was sit at home with his wife and new baby and parents and enjoy the fire and Christmas Eve. “All right!” He said, wanting me to be happy , “I’m going to Wal Mart!” I don’t think I ever loved him so much as I did at that moment. Out he went into the craziness that is Wal Mart on Christmas Eve and he did it all. He wrapped everything, too and put it all under the tree, then did the stockings, too. While his parents slept, and while I curled on the sofa by the light of the Christmas tree nursing our precious baby girl, he finished up with the presents then sat with me, arm around us, and we just stared at the tree. This was our first Christmas as a young family . W e would be OK. And it was the BEST Christmas ever.

sniffles are here Cold and flu season’s upon us! Get some tips on keeping kids comfortable at home.

h, ah, ah-choo! It’s that time of year, when tissues fly off the shelves, and parents prowl the aisles for overthe-counter medications (OTC). But wait — is it OK to give OTC meds along with a doctor’s prescription? Do hand sanitizers really work? And what about other home remedies for sore throats and coughs?

ACETAMINOPHEN ADVICE In the summer of 2011, some makers of liquid acetaminophen revised their infant and children products to contain a standard amount of medicine. Prior to that, infant’s medicine was three times as strong as the children’ s version. Why the change? “Overdoses were happening,” says Rosy Thind, M.D. with Group Health Associates in Finneytown. She explains that parents were giving toddlers and kids the same medicine they were giving to their infants, and not realizing that the infant drops were more concentrated so that infants didn’t have to consume as much liquid. The concentration of the infant drops is now diluted to match the children’s concentration (160mg/5mL), so be sure to check the dosing amounts before administering any medication. Of course, it’s always best to consult your pediatrician before giving your child any kind of OTC pain or fever reliever . Thind advises parents to steer clear of ibuprofen for babies under 6 months, as there haven’t been any real studies to test the ef fects. She also says parents should not give acetaminophen to infants under 2 months of age. “If they display symptoms like a fever or are irritable, then they need to be seen, as they could have a serious infection.” Parents should always call their pediatrician if their infant under 2 months of age has a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher , and call if your child’s fever reaches 103 degrees. Thind also advises that parents take into consideration how their child appears. “Do they perk up after some medication? What other symptoms are present?” she says.

HELP AT HOME Thind says it is OK to give an OTC medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen along with a doctor ’s prescription – just make sure your pediatrician knows about it. “It’ s OK with antibiotics, there’ s no drug interaction,” she says, adding that antibiotics won’t be prescribed for a cold caused by a virus. Which unfortunately means that your little guy or gal is going to have to suf fer through it. But there are some home remedies that might help ease his or her symptoms, along with acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fevers or pain. Thind says a teaspoon of honey for kids over 1 year is good for congestion and coughs, and tea or warm soup is a good way to thin mucous. “Parents can also sit in a steamy bathroom with their child and read a book.” You can also break out the vaporizer or humidifier. “Either one is helpful for colds caused by a virus,” says Thind, “as they both put moisture in the air.” Vaporizers typically put out warm steam, while humidifiers provide a cool mist. Make sure you keep them clean, though! “Mold can build up if they’re not cleaned and drained,” says Thind, adding that parents should always read the manufacturer’s instructions for proper cleaning guidelines.

A WORD ON PREVENTION The most important thing you can do this cold season? “Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands!” says Thind. She suggests a good trick to teach your kids: sing the Alphabet Song while scrubbing their hands (ALL of their hands, including palms, fingers, backs of hands and wrists). When they reach the last letter, they’re done. “And regular soap is fine, it doesn’t have to be anti-bacterial,” she says, adding that hand sanitizers are OK to use a couple times throughout the day , but always wash your hands at a sink whenever you can.

“It’s been an adjustment for everybody,” says Kim. Just working out all the logistics can be a real challenge for the family. “We try to make everybody happy by planning times to celebrate with all the families involved, but then, we make it a priority to have Christmas Day as our time to be together and be our own family,” she adds. Kim feels it’s best to try and keep things simple. For example, rather than attempting to address other family traditions or customs, Craig and Kim have found that starting their own traditions has worked for them. “We do our own thing, and open our gifts Christmas morning,” Kim says. “Then we follow that with a nice family breakfast at home. We just spend the day together enjoying each other and it helps ease the stress of the holidays. The children can enjoy their gifts and not have to jump up and go somewhere else. They can count on that one day to be our special day.”

Be Flexi ble with the K IDS’ Needs “It can be a juggling act to manage a normal two-household schedule,” says Sharon James, divorce and family mediator with Beech Acres Parenting Center, which offers parent and/or couples coaching and mediation. “Add to this child-care arrangements, visiting extended family members, vacations, celebrations, and you have quite the challenge. Advanced planning and communication is key. Send a list of your child’s activities — parties, child-care while out of school — to the other parent, along with the times that your family will be celebrating and ask to know their plans so you can create a holiday schedule that is confirmed well in advance and that works for everyone.” It’s crucial for parents to be particularly sensitive to the needs of their children during the holidays. “This is not the time to insist on equal time down to the minute,” says James. “They are not going to remember that Dad had 30 minutes more with them on Christmas morning. They WILL remember if it created tension and conflict between their parents. Unanticipated snags in plans may mean you have to change things around a bit to accommodate. It is important to be respectful of planned events at your child’s other home and make sure that children are there on time; it is equally important not to make an issue of changes that will allow your children to enjoy the holiday.” James also believes it’s a good idea for a blended family to start new holiday traditions. “Keep some family traditions from both sides,” she says. “A family meeting can help you brainstorm things you’d like to hang on to as well as ways to create new traditions that represent the union of your blended family. If you’ve always opened gifts on Christmas morning, but your stepchildren’s family opened them on Christmas Eve, do a little of each. Different ways to decorate a tree? Have two. There are no rules.” She also recommends that parents play to their family members’ strengths. “If your stepson enjoys hanging lights and your daughter is a creative gift-wrapper, place them in charge of those tasks. When children are making contributions and their talents are acknowledged and appreciated, they gain confidence and a sense of belonging — all key to the success of blending families.”

Kim Williams cites another problem blended families face — making sure that the gift giving is “as even as possible among the children, and that one doesn’t feel that another child gets more.” She adds, “You really have to work hard to make that happen, particularly when the children are getting gifts from other family members.” James advises parents to be mindful of gift-giving messages. “What message do you want to convey to your kids about the meaning of the holidays? You may want to talk with one another about what the children have asked for and share in the cost of the bigger-ticket items and let them know that those gifts are from both Mom and Dad. If there are more gifts at one house than the other and your children comment on that, you might say ‘I am so happy that you enjoyed your Christmas with your mom/dad.’ You cannot change what happens in your ex-spouse’s home. You do have control over how you respond and keeping your child from being placed in the middle.”

Santa v s. the Drei del: Ble nding R eligiou s V iews Concerning the blending of religions, Neal King, Ph.D., professor of sociology at Belmont University, explains that if parents “do marry outside of their church — usually one spouse is not as devout as the other, and either converts or doesn’t really care how the holidays are celebrated.” Also, he adds that children tend to follow their parents, “so the devout spouse leads the way, and the children naturally inherit the beliefs of the spouse who cares the most. In a way, this is good news.” King says he feels that Christmas “means so many different things to so many different people, and this helps the blended family on that holiday, because Christmas is so open and wide — and elastic. It can be a holiday that suits most anybody.” The Mayerson Foundation has developed a unique program for families with blended religious backgrounds, called Fusion Family. In addition to fun events for interfaith families to meet others, like Top Chef Tots or The Passover Free for All, Fusion Family also offers New Traditions, which contains free gifts to help parents and children explore Judaism and its role in their family life. Both interfaith and conversionary families receive free gifts of ritual items and resources to help them learn about and celebrate Jewish holidays. The Mayerson Foundation also offers Shalom Family for families with children ages 12 and younger in which one or both parents are Jewish. Shalom Family hosts large events throughout the year, along with Sensory Sunday, which are free playgroups for families with babies. Shalom Family also provides Shalom Baby Starter Kits. Having a successful family life can be difficult these days for traditional, as well as blended families. Approaching the holidays with care and compromise is perhaps good advice for all of us, no matter what our family situation is. After all, learning how to get along by loving and respecting each other is what it is all about — whatever the season.

What is ultrasound? Available today in every major hospital and in many doctor’s offices, ultrasound is used in almost every field of medicine. This technology has become extremely valuable in the health care of women, both in gynecology - the overall health care of a woman’s reproductive organs and breasts - and during pregnancy and childbirth. Ultrasound is a diagnostic exam that uses high frequency sound waves to visualize gynecological organs and fetal structures. The sound waves used are of a frequency too high to be heard by the human ear. By reflecting off internal organs and being “read” by scanners, the sound waves create pictures of the internal organs and, during pregnancy, the fetus. Ultrasound differs from X-rays in that it uses sound instead of X-rays, making it safer for the fetus as well as the mother.

What is a Level 1 ultrasound? For the majority of pregnant women a Level 1 ultrasound is perfectly adequate for assessing fetal anatomy. Occasionally your provider may suggest a higher level ultrasound because of a concern arising from your Level 1 scan, or due to certain high risk conditions pertaining to your current pregnancy or your obstetric history. A Level 2 ultrasound is a more in depth look at specific anatomy of the baby, for example, the heart, kidneys or brain. It involves the participation of an OB specialist called a perinatologist. The perinatologist will then consult with your doctor about any findings he or she observes and suggest the necessary management or follow up for the remainder of your pregnancy.

It’s one of the most popular Jewish holidays of the year but how much do you really know about it? Some background before our story begins... Also known as the Festival of Lights this eight-day holiday is a celebration of survival and religious freedom, and carries an uplifting theme of spirit over strength. The story of Hanukkah dates back more than 2,000 years to the land of Judea, known today as Israel, where the Jewish people were ruled by a brutal king named Antiochus who forced them to convert to paganism and worship Greek gods. The observance of the Sabbath and other traditions central to Judaism were outlawed, and the sacrifice of pigs and other atrocities were performed in the Holy Temple. While some Jews complied with the new laws, many refused… and still others rebelled.

The Hebrew Hammers... One such man named Judah became the leader of a group of resistance fighters known as the Maccabees (Hebrew for hammers). Antiochus underestimated the will and strength of the Maccabees, who after many years of fighting ended up defeating the huge Syrian-Greek army. Like David overcoming Goliath, Judah Maccabee and his small army of resistance fighters were victorious in defeating one of the most powerful armies in the ancient world to reclaim the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after more than 500 years of oppression.

Hands-on Hanukkah Fun for Jewish Families Shalom Family, a program for families in the Jewish community with children 12 and under, will be hosting Mini Maccabees at the Children’s Museum on Sunday, December 2nd at 3pm. Kids can make-their-own Maccabee shields, take part in PJ Library’s Hanukkah story time, and participate in other engaging activities related to the Cincinnati Museum Center’s Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Ancient Times exhibition.

The miracle of Hanukkah is said to have occurred when the Maccabees went to rededicate the Holy Temple. In order to do so they needed to kindle the Eternal Light, that was supposed to burn continuously. Although they were only able to find enough oil for it to burn for one day, it ended up lasting eight days, enough time to locate more oil before the flame went out. Jewish people the world over commemorate this event by lighting a special nine-branched candelabra called a menorah. The ninth candle is used to light one additional candle each night for eight nights. One special Hanukkah tradition is eating potato pancakes, jelly donuts or other foods fried in “oil”. Another is exchanging gifts. After the Temple was reclaimed, the Jewish people began minting their own coins, which was extremely significant in those days because having this ability represented true independence. Hence giving gifts of coins became a Hanukkah tradition, which later turned into the giving of other kinds of gifts as well. for
