Question:

Help! When and how do you give your kids the Santa/Tooth Fairy talk?

“My daughter was 10 and she figured it out. She asked me to please not lie, so I didn't. I told her the truth and I "hired" her to be my helper for the younger ones. She loves being the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, and official elf mover even more than she loves looking forward to Santa."

Melanie Adkins

“Never! I know when my oldest stopped believing, about age 11/12 but we never had the talk and he still enjoys all the magic and surprises! He's 17 now. My 7 and 8 year olds still believe."

Angie Williams James

“My daughter, at age 9, caught me in the act of being the Tooth Fairy at midnight. I just said we will talk in the a.m. and I came clean! I explained to her it's all in the Christmas spirit."

ON THE COVER

Cover Kid, Arya, photographed in the studio by Wendy Magee Photography. “I don’t. My daughter was 12 before she said, 'I know it’s you.' I explained that I believe Santa is the symbol of the Christmas spirit, and I do believe in that. She smiled and said, 'Me, too.' The rest of mine haven’t said anything yet."

Kendra Westerberg

"We told our 10 year old after Christmas last year. We didn't want him to hear from kids at school and to get upset as kids can be cruel. He said afterwards he was glad he heard it from us. Although later, he said he had always questioned the Easter Bunny: Why would a bunny give out chocolate?!"

Jenn Kaminski

“My son was 9. He was very persistent that Santa could bring him all of the extravagant gifts he asked for. No matter how many ways I tried to say Santa does not have unlimited money for supplies for the elves to make these things, he persisted! Finally I got so mad I looked at him and said, 'You know what? Santa doesn’t have unlimited money to bring you the $2K of things you are asking for one week before Christmas because I am Santa.' Wouldn’t recommend that method but it is what it is."

Melissa Puckett-Zimmerman

“My son was a month away from being 11. I enjoyed one last Christmas morning of him believing, and I had a letter written that I put in his stocking that he opened last."

Amberly Jackson

“We told our kids that we are all Santa. And now they are part of the Santa club that keeps the magic alive for the younger kids. They can help with present buying and fun stuff to keep that magic going during the Christmas season. HOWEVER, first rule of Santa Club, you tell anyone that Santa isn’t real, you don’t get presents for two years ... our kids told no one!"

Laurie Bryant-Fisher

“Hold on. I'm 48. What do you mean 'the talk'? Did something happen to Santa and the Tooth Fairy? Because I already have my letter written to Santa."
