Deciding on Private School
ou’ve made the decision to send your child to private school. What's next?
Planning ... and lots of it. According to the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (taistn.com), there are specific steps to take. To help the process go smoothly, here's what you should prepare for.
TOURS
Make a list of schools you’re considering and visit them. Keep in mind where you live and the distance you’re willing to travel to get your child to school on time each day. After visiting several schools, make an even shorter list of ones you want to apply to.
PARENT INTERVIEWS
Select questions focusing on both educational aspects as well as about the teachers.
ITEMS NEEDED
These items that are typically required:
• Completed application form
• Most recent academic transcript
• Past standardized test results
• Teacher recommendations
• Results of standardized admission test and/or a school-administered entrance exam
• Notes from a formal interview with your child
Keep a running list of the schools you’re applying to and the application fees, too. Private school application fees can run anywhere from $75$250 or more.
TESTING
Most schools want to test a student’s ability to perform inside and outside the classroom to determine if they have the appropriate program for that student.
Your child could be tested in either the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT; ssat.org) or the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE; erblearn.org/parents/isee-overview). Each of these tests focus on quantitative and verbal skills.

You put a great deal of effort into checking out the basics of a private school education such as costs, location, academics and specializations, but that's only a part of the picture, says Dona Matthews, an educational specialist and co-author of Beyond Intelligence: Secrets for Raising Happily Productive Kids (House of Anansi; 2014).
"There is no one size fits all," says Matthews. "No matter if it's one of the best schools, it's a question of looking at the best fit for your child," she adds.
Matthews suggests parents look at the whole child when matching to the right school. Is your child highly engaged or does he need opportunities? Is your child innately shy or will he do better in an encouraging, supportive environment? Does he have a special talent or specialized interest you want to make sure is nurtured?
In addition, look at the culture of the school from the leadership on down. "How well do they communicate?" Matthews asks. "Is the leadership stable, and what is their reputation?"
Matthews says you should visit the schools on your short list repeatedly.
"Beyond open houses, go for a tour, talk to teachers and other people who aren't trying to promote the school," Matthews says. "Go with your child on a shadow day to see how he feels about it."
Also, most schools are on social media. Get a real feel for day-to-day happenings on their Facebook and Twitter pages.
Matching your child to the right school takes time. Start early and do your homework for the best outcome. Many parents cite the following reasons for choosing private school for their kids: class size; religious; focus on learning; and a strong connection between parents and the school.
Can You Afford Private School?
While you may think that affording private school is impossible for your family, there are ways to make it happen. Here are great tips from The National Association of Independent Schools (nais. org):
• Every independent school has its own policies about who receives financial aid, what type and how much. You cannot know if your family qualifies for aid until your submit an application that allows evaluation of your situation.
• To determine your eligibility for financial aid, you must submit an application form and financial statements to the schools of your choice.
• There is no income limit that automatically make your family ineligible for financial aid.
• Financial aid officers take into account your income, assets and expenses, including educational costs for other children.
• Your financial "need" is the gap between how much financial officers determine what your family can afford and the cost of tuition and fees.
• Types of financial aid include grants, merit scholarships, tuition loans by a private lender, tuition payment plans and sibling discounts.
• Many families combine financial aid options for their children.

MNPS Experience
Metro Schools has more than across Nashville that offer interesting academic programs and pathways ranging from IT to health care. With so many options, there are many ways to design your own experience at MNPS and create your own unique path to success.
What will you create?
Every Student Known
A personalized education for every child
Metro Nashville Public Schools, we use detailed academic, behavior and social-emotional data to ensure every student in the district is known and our staff makes a concerted effort to tune into their interests, passions, learning style and needs. We focus on creating and supporting rigorous, engaging and personalized learning experiences for all students to identify and eliminate inequities, so every student has a clear and achievable path to success marked by measurable goals.
Offering a range of programs and opportunities, MNPS has options to fit every family’s needs. Whether you are looking for advanced academics, related arts, special education services, English language supports or STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) education programs, we offer the best choices to meet individual student needs—starting at Pre-K all the way through graduation.
ENSURING EQUITY TO ALL STUDENTS
MNPS is consistently and intentionally working to support and achieve educational equity in our schools. Our goal is that every student receives what they need, when they need it, so they can develop their full academic and social potential regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, language, religion, family background
or family income.
We believe it is our shared responsibility to ensure every student in every Nashville neighborhood has the same access and opportunity to a high-quality education. By identifying different disparities and working to remove systematic differences, we can foster an inclusive school system and create a much more equitable education and outcome for our students.
Whatever excites your child about school and learning, MNPS has schools and programs where they will thrive.
More to Learn, More to Do
What will you do?
VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS
True to our Music City roots, the arts are an important focus in all grade levels. Our students participate in dance, music, theatre and the visual arts. These programs, including our thriving Music Makes Us program, receive support from the local music industry and valuable business partnerships.
AVID
Career and college options are exciting—but we know they can be overwhelming, too! No matter what path high school graduates choose, college or career, students must develop essential skills to design their own successful futures. With our AVID framework and specially trained AVID educators, we work with students to find their passions, see their full potential and build their skill set. The AVID college and career framework is in 48 MNPS schools and continues to expand.
STEAM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART AND MATH)
Big dreams start young—andMNPS STEAM programs tap into our learners’ imaginations with thematic learning programs like entrepreneurship, environmental science and engineering. STEAM education is integrated in elementary, middle and high schools.
ATHLETICS
Metro Schools athletics focuses not only on physical health, but also provides student athletes opportunities to develop higher standards of mental, moral, social and physical fitness through participation in extracurricular athletic programs. There are 14 TSSAA-sanctioned sports available in our high schools, while middle school students have seven different sports, sanctioned by the middle school athletics association.
Follow MNPS Athletics on:

program. Students focus on developing structure,
of our four Early Learning Centers, one of our schoolbased classrooms or our two Montessori programs. Studies show children in Pre-K develop literacy, language and math skills faster than their peers— and the benefits of Pre-K impact children into their teen and adult years. Our academic team is committed to supporting a high-quality education for every student, and all instruction is aligned to the Tennessee State Academic Standards. Our elementary schools offer foreign language, STEAM, Montessori and Paideia programs, magnet programs and much more. To ensure all students realize their fullest potential, they are provided supports based on individual needs, whether that is access to gifted and talented services, tutoring, English learners, exceptional education services, etc.
Middle School
The middle school years are a time of great change for students developmentally, socially and academically. Metro Schools creates caring school environments that reflect the unique needs of our middle school students and appropriately responds to those needs while preparing students for high school. All middle school students explore and cultivate their interests through experiences in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies while developing an understanding of personal and social responsibility as members of a community. Every 8th grade student develops a transition plan to prepare them for successful transition to high school, including both academic and SEL goals.
High School
Metro Schools students have many opportunities available to them to learn, explore interests and prepare for college or a career. Some classes and programs our high schools offer, which are part of our district’s Early Postsecondary Opportunities (EPSOs), can include:
•Rigorous advanced academics courses
•Industry credential certifications
•Dual enrollment and/or college credit
MNPS guarantees every high school student the opportunity to participate in at least four EPSOs to be a Ready Graduate, defined by the state as developing the knowledge and skills for success in college, the workforce or military service.
EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Students can fast track their college plans or begin building a career by simultaneously earning a high school diploma and college associate degree in just four years—and at no cost to families. Two MNPS schools offer an early college program: Early College High School, located on the campus of Nashville State Community College, and Early College at Whites Creek High School.
“ ”
Students are at the forefront of the decisionmaking when it comes to the Academies. Student voice and student choice empowers them to explore opportunities in the areas they’re curious about.
Leslie Aley CTE Coordinator at Antioch High SchoolCREATING Your Future
The Academies of Nashville, Metro Schools’ learning community program in our 12 zoned high schools, is recognized as one of the nation’s best college and career prep programs. Our 35 different academies—covering interesting, high-demand industries like health care, hospitality, tech, media and engineering—give students the opportunity to take their learning out of the classroom and into the real world, creating their own learning experience and empowering them to make informed decisions after graduation.
Metro Schools unveiled a new Academies of Nashville logo in Summer 2022. The new logo depicts our MNPS graduate standing on a pathway to a future of limitless possibilities, reflecting the Academies of Nashville pathways available to students.

School Options
Families in Nashville have 159 PUBLIC SCHOOLS available to them— meaning there’s a school that’s right for your child. While families have many choices available through the Optional Schools Application Process, the perfect school for your student may be right around the corner in your very own neighborhood. A school tour is a great way to meet teachers and principals, observe classrooms and learn about academic programs.
Every year, the Optional Schools Process allows families to choose among open enrollment schools in addition to their zoned school. Start with your community school, if it’s not the right fit, visit schools.mnps.org for additional school options.
WHAT IS A ZONED SCHOOL?
Every child in Nashville is zoned for a specific elementary, middle and high school and is guaranteed a seat at that zoned school. Some areas also have zoned options, which give families guaranteed access to more than one school. Proof of residency is required to attend a zoned school.
WHAT IS AN OPTIONAL SCHOOL?
Optional schools fall into two categories: schools without a zone designed to attract students from all over town, such as magnet and charter schools, and zoned neighborhood schools with available seats. Magnet schools often offer specialized programming and may have entrance requirements. Some charter schools also offer their own application process. If a zoned neighborhood school has available seats, any student in Nashville may apply to fill them.
IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED TO OPTIONAL SCHOOLS?
Parents are responsible for transportation to optional schools unless otherwise indicated on the school choice application. All high school students can ride WeGo buses free through the StrIDe program. Middle school students attending school outside of their zone are also eligible to ride WeGo buses free after parents complete a permission form at the school’s main office.
REGISTER FOR SCHOOL
Students can register for school online or visit any MNPS enrollment center. Enrollment centers are open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.–3:30 p.m. To register online or to find an enrollment center near you, visit mnps.org/learn/ register-for-school.
WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR CHARTER SCHOOLS?
Many charter schools use the district’s Optional Schools Application to admit students, but some use their own applications. If the charter school your child would like to attend does not appear on the application, contact that school to learn more about its application process.
