“THINGS TO DO” IS BEST IN THE NATION!

Cheers to us! Nashville Parent’s ‘Things to Do’ section is GOLDEN again for 2024. At the annual Parenting Media Association annual conference held recently in Chicago, Nashville Parent took home the Gold for best Calendar of Events. Nashville’s “Things to Do” family calendar continues its award-winning legacy that began many years ago.

Nashville Parent is no stranger to awards. The publication — which began in 1993 and now celebrates 30 years — has won multiple awards from the Parenting Media Association (the nation’s top trade association for regional parenting magazines) since its inception. Led by longtime Editor in Chief Susan Day, the Nashville Parent et al. continue to win awards for excellence in editorial and design.

“We are steeped in the Nashville goings on, and we’ve been here through the amazing transformation from small town to ‘IT’ town,” Day says. “We are thrilled to deliver the highest quality content possible in the calendar of events category,” Day says. “As parents ourselves, we recognize the unique needs of parents and kids. It’s a niche we understand and love,” she adds.

Can You Afford Private School?

While you may think that a ording private school is impossible for your family, there are ways to make it happen. Here are great tips from The National Association of Independent Schools (nais.org):

• Every independent school has its own policies about who receives financial aid, what type and how much. You cannot know if your family qualifies for aid until your submit an application that allows evaluation of your situation.

• To determine your eligibility for financial aid, you must submit an application form and financial statements to the schools of your choice.

• There is no income limit that automatically make your family ineligible for financial aid.

• Financial aid o cers take into account your income, assets and expenses, including educational costs for other children.

• Your financial "need" is the gap between how much financial o cers determine what your family can afford and the cost of tuition and fees.

• Types of financial aid include grants, merit scholarships, tuition loans by a private lender, tuition payment plans and sibling discounts.

• Many families combine financial aid options for their children.

Deciding on Private School

You’ve made the decision to send your child to private school. What's next?

Planning ... and lots of it. According to the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (taistn.com), there are specific steps to take. To help the process go smoothly, here's what you should prepare for.

TOURS

Make a list of schools you’re considering and visit them. Keep in mind where you live and the distance you’re willing to travel to get your child to school on time each day. After visiting several schools, make an even shorter list of ones you want to apply to.

PARENT INTERVIEWS

Select questions focusing on both educational aspects as well as about the teachers.

ITEMS NEEDED

These items that are typically required:

• Completed application form

• Most recent academic transcript

• Past standardized test results

• Teacher recommendations

• Results of standardized admission test and/or a school-administered entrance exam

• Notes from a formal interview with your child

Keep a running list of the schools you’re applying to and the application fees, too. Private school application fees can run anywhere from $75$250 or more.

TESTING

Most schools want to test a student’s ability to perform inside and outside the classroom to determine if they have the appropriate program for that student.

Your child could be tested in either the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT; ssat.org) or the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE; erblearn.org/parents/isee-overview). Each of these tests focus on quantitative and verbal skills.

Early Learning

Metro Schools has a nationally recognized Pre-K program where students focus on developing the skills they’ll need through play-based learning to succeed in elementary school and beyond. Families can apply to one of our four Early Learning Centers, one of our many growing elementary school-based classrooms or our two Montessori programs.

Our Grow t ogether program provides information, support and opportunities to families with children under the age of three. Learn more at earlylearning.mnps.org.

Elementary School

Across our 70 elementary schools, students thrive in fun and engaging hands-on lessons. We’re committed to supporting a high-quality education for every student, every day, while aligning all instruction to the Tennessee State Academic Standards. Our elementary schools offer foreign language and STEAM instruction, athletics, Montessori, gifted and talented education services, and much more.

Community p artners are vital to m etro Scho O ls — offering direct experiences, mentorships and even financial support. Private donors recently committed to raising more than $5 million to enhance the construction designs for Lakeview, Percy Priest and Paragon Mills elementary schools.

Middle School

The middle school years are a pivotal phase for students developmentally, socially and academically. Metro Schools provide caring school environments that encourage self-discovery and promote independence and responsibility while preparing students for high school. Each of our 31 middle schools has unique offerings that meet the academic and social needs of our students, attracting a diverse student body where every student has the tools to thrive.

Our m iddle scho O l S tem programs are growing and advancing, from Vanderbilt’s Day of Discovery and Meta’s Oculus VR at McKissack Middle to the growing number of certified STEM schools like Rose Park, Croft and Issac Litton.

High School

Our high schools offer students personalized, thematic learning tied to real-world experiences. Students can take advantage of Advanced Placement courses (AP) to obtain college credit or sit for nationally recognized professional certifications. Students also participate in work-based internships and service-learning experiences, furthering their school-career connections.

Our high school students have many opportunities available to them to learn, explore interests and prepare for college or a career. As part of our district’s Early Postsecondary Opportunities (EPSOs), our high schools offer:

•Rigorous advanced academics courses

•Industry credential certifications

•Dual enrollment and/or college credit

University mNpS

Nashville is nicknamed the “Athens of the South” because of its many higher educational opportunities. MNPS has close relationships with all of our city’s collegiate institutions, from Vanderbilt to Fisk to Belmont, with several full-tuition scholarship opportunities available to students who attend an MNPS school. Through our partnership with Nashville State Community College, high school students have the opportunity to earn their associate’s degree alongside their high school diploma. A number of our middle schools are adding early college programming to their curriculum.

CREATING Your Future

The Academies of Nashville, a learning model sustained by strong partnerships between our 12 zoned high schools and more than 365 and growing partners, is consistently recognized as one of the nation’s best college and career prep programs. Safety Initiatives

Student and staff safety is a top priority for Metro Schools. The district and Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) work together to develop emergency operations plans and safety improvements. MNPD provides active shooter training and participates in safety drills with schools. Metro Schools have a police presence at their school in the form of either community police officers who monitor and patrol or SROs embedded in the school environment. Additional safety measures include shatter-resistant film, audio enhancement systems that improve communications, Safety Ambassadors in elementary schools, weapon detection systems, and robust security protocols like AV intercom locks and security cameras.
