“THINGS TO DO” IS BEST IN THE NATION!
Cheers to us! Nashville Parent’s ‘Things to Do’ section is GOLDEN again for 2024. At the annual Parenting Media Association annual conference held recently in Chicago, Nashville Parent took home the Gold for best Calendar of Events. Nashville’s “Things to Do” family calendar continues its award-winning legacy that began many years ago.
Nashville Parent is no stranger to awards. The publication — which began in 1993 and now celebrates 30 years — has won multiple awards from the Parenting Media Association (the nation’s top trade association for regional parenting magazines) since its inception. Led by longtime Editor in Chief Susan Day, the Nashville Parent et al. continue to win awards for excellence in editorial and design.
“We are steeped in the Nashville goings on, and we’ve been here through the amazing transformation from small town to ‘IT’ town,” Day says. “We are thrilled to deliver the highest quality content possible in the calendar of events category,” Day says. “As parents ourselves, we recognize the unique needs of parents and kids. It’s a niche we understand and love,” she adds.

While you may think that a ording private school is impossible for your family, there are ways to make it happen. Here are great tips from The National Association of Independent Schools (nais.org):

• To determine your eligibility for financial aid, you must submit an application form and financial statements to the schools of your choice.
• There is no income limit that automatically make your family ineligible for financial aid.
• Financial aid o cers take into account your income, assets and expenses, including educational costs for other children.
• Your financial "need" is the gap between how much financial o cers determine what your family can afford and the cost of tuition and fees.
• Types of financial aid include grants, merit scholarships, tuition loans by a private lender, tuition payment plans and sibling discounts.
• Many families combine financial aid options for their children.

Deciding on Private School
You’ve made the decision to send your child to private school. What's next?
Planning ... and lots of it. According to the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (taistn.com), there are specific steps to take. To help the process go smoothly, here's what you should prepare for.
TOURS
Make a list of schools you’re considering and visit them. Keep in mind where you live and the distance you’re willing to travel to get your child to school on time each day. After visiting several schools, make an even shorter list of ones you want to apply to.
PARENT INTERVIEWS
Select questions focusing on both educational aspects as well as about the teachers.
ITEMS NEEDED
These items that are typically required:
• Completed application form
• Most recent academic transcript
• Past standardized test results
• Teacher recommendations
• Results of standardized admission test and/or a school-administered entrance exam
• Notes from a formal interview with your child
Keep a running list of the schools you’re applying to and the application fees, too. Private school application fees can run anywhere from $75$250 or more.
TESTING
Most schools want to test a student’s ability to perform inside and outside the classroom to determine if they have the appropriate program for that student.
Your child could be tested in either the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT; ssat.org) or the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE; erblearn.org/parents/isee-overview). Each of these tests focus on quantitative and verbal skills.

Safety Initiatives
Student and staff safety is a top priority for Metro Schools. The district and Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) work together to develop emergency operations plans and safety improvements. MNPD provides active shooter training and participates in safety drills with schools. Metro Schools have a police presence at their school in the form of either community police officers who monitor and patrol or SROs embedded in the school environment. Additional safety measures include shatter-resistant film, audio enhancement systems that improve communications, Safety Ambassadors in elementary schools, weapon detection systems, and robust security protocols like AV intercom locks and security cameras.
