DAY BY DAY A Battle Worth Winning
W
hen I laugh, she starts happy dancing. When I make strange noises, she cocks her head, perplexed. If I raise my voice in anger, she sulks away, shooting wary sidelong glances as she goes. It’s hard for me — or anyone — to snap out of a hard emotion, but it’s worse to see her hiding beneath the table all because of big, bad me. The she I’m referring to is my pandemic puppy, Theo. She’s A LOT to handle, but she’s also wonderful and comforting. Her only stress comes from an empty tummy. Puppies are a lot like kids. Over and over again you have to teach them not to jump on furniture. They make big messes and just run away; they constantly get into stuff; it goes on and on — it’s exhausting. But Theo has reminded me of what’s so easily forgotten: we are mushy worlds of feelings beneath our exteriors, and we need tender, loving care, empathy and support. Here’s something else: puppies can’t hide their fear of you — kids usually can. The talk’s all about mental health now. Twenty-twenty had us cooped up, tested, constrained, scared, hurt and challenged like no other year before. It was and still is weird and scary. We’re all very happy that 2020 is over, but what will 2021 bring? The pandemic is certainly not over. We’re still in a wait-and-see mode and still dealing with anxieties and the unknown. That includes kids. Theo has shown me how inexplicably little ones are connected to their parents’ emotions. If you are having fun, they are having fun. If you start yelling, they will hide away. It’s a truth that is so important to remember and hold onto going forward. We need our kids to be well; we need to be well. Much has been written about parental burnout over the past months and increased anxiousness in kids. Education upheavals, the loss of jobs, sicknesses and the constant stay-at-home for families has taken a toll. Social distancing has isolated and limited us ... and we’re supposed to make daily efforts to keep ourselves connected — we need each other! At the store in line, I overheard a boy say to a friend, “I wish I could go back to school, but my mom is still really freaked out by corona.” The friend noddedin sympathy. I felt bad for the first boy because it’s true: kids are always at the mercy of their parents. They don’t get to pick who they are raised by, and they are bound by an invisible silver cord to their parents for life. So ... try. Fight and wrestle with yourself as best you can to stay positive, have a good outlook, remain sane upstairs for you and your kids. Look on the bright side: things can only get better from here. Theo’s happy dance is living proof of that.

pandemic parenting Easy Does It at Home It’s true that most kids are good at simply going with the flow, but they also tend to take on their parents’ stress and anxiety. As the pandemic lingers on, do your best to stay positive. By Susan Day
“I
really want to go back to school, but my mom is still all worried about corona,” I overheard a young teen tell a friend who nodded somberly. I felt badly for him because it’s true. Kids are at the mercy of their parents — whatever stuff their parents are made of. And as the pandemic drags on — and even with the good news of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines — there’s still much uncertainty surrounding the months ahead. “Normal” is not returning any time soon and chatter about our fragile mental states is everywhere. We need day-to-day solutions. According to a national survey conducted by Vanderbilt last summer and published in Pediatrics, parents sited worsening mental health for themselves and worsening behavioral health among their children. The researchers concluded what we all understand now: the pandemic has had a substantial tandem impact on

parents and kids, increasing our needs for deliverance from this gloomy period in history. And here we are. How do we move forward from here? And how can we fortify ourselves enough to successfully guide our kids into the new year with positivity and hope? Persevering through this strenuous time is as much about our kids’ lives as it is about our own. Here are key ways to bolster your parenting efforts so your family emerges from the pandemic in due time, stronger, healthier, and hopefully, a little less worn for the wear.
EASE THE BAR & INCREASE THE FLEX
Short of letting everything go to you-know-where in a handbag at this point, you can continue to ease up on all of the expectations you have for your kids right now — and that includes discipline. Kids have been through a lot too, says Tina Payne Bryson, co-
nashvilleparent.com
author of No-Drama Discipline (Bantam; 2016). Kids often don’t know how to cope with dissatisfaction or unease and they may act out more, so you actually need to react less. Walk away and don’t micromanage so much. Look at the bright side: you are not driving carloads of kids to and fro like you used to and scrambling like a mad woman to get dinner into your family. You have more “chill” time and less “drill” time. The era of trophy kids is over, and the era of taking it easy and being kind to yourself is here. Whatever your kids have lost in development right now will be made up in time. Relax, let go, let live.
AIM FOR CONNECTIVITY
None of us are designed to be hermits. We are social creatures meant to be with each other, and kids thrive among friends and exploring life together. It’s important for you to model reaching out to your friends and to encourage your kids to do so for themselves as well, says Bryson. Have safe playdates at your home for your little ones if you can. Encourage your kids to Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime with pals. And as far as daily connectivity with your children goes (who may drive you batty from time to time), place an emphasis on being nonjudgmental so your kids will talk freely to you and not shut you out.
KEEP MOVING
With all of the screen time we’re into now, it’s really important for kids to get exercise at home, in the neighborhood or at the gym. Yes, they should still social distance, and yes, it’s cold outside. But you are aiming to make a hard time better for them, remember? Being around other kids and adults is healthy for us, so bundle everybody up and go for walks. Turn up the music in your home and encourage your little ones to dance. Do online fitness classes as a family. Really.
LET YOURSELF PLAY
We’re looking for healthy ways to get through the continuing pandemic, right? So why playing may seem childish and silly, it also offers a reprieve from all of the worry and fear. Play helps to improve stress and also increases a sense of well-being. You don’t have to drop everything when your little one asks you to play, but you DO need to recognize that play is good for all ages of people and plan to be playful on pur-
pose, especially if you’re not the playful type. Play family games. Build a fort (and don’t insist on cleaning it up so quickly); take small breaks from working to channel your inner child and to seek out a little bit of fun by getting down on the floor with your little one. If this all seems silly, that’s a good reason why you should try it, says Meredith Sinclair, author of Well Played: The Ultimate Guide to Awakening Your Family’s Playful Spirit (William Morrow; 2016). “There is something innately whimsical about being spontaneous,” Sinclair says. Schedule blocks of time throughout the week for the possibility of random playful activities. “It sounds crazy, like you’re planning to be spontaneous,” Sinclair says. “But you kind of have to as an adult.”
BE POSITIVE, PROVIDE HOPE
The most important thing you can do for your kids may be the hardest of all during this time, experts say: stay positive. It’s not easy when life is tough, but try to look toward to the future and talk about it in a positive light. Aim to send your kids the message that everything will get better. Let them know that life is full of ups and downs and that it will be that way all of their lives. Emphasize the journey aspect of life. Ask your kids what they look forward to and tell them what you are looking forward to. Another way to bring out positivity at home is to look back together at hard events you’ve experienced individually and as a family, and to recognize that you’re still standing. Talk about obstacles and how you have overcome them. Research shows that kids need hope, too — we all do. Hope helps us to believe in the days to come. Many parents bring hope to their children through faith, prayer, meditation and visualization. In short, the best way to teach hope is to live it. Hope is basically learned, says C.R. Snyder, author of The Psychology of Hope: You Can Get There From Here (Free Press; 2003). “We have centuries of previous examples where humankind has been visited by disasters,” Snyder writes. What happens is that people find a way to come together to deal with the crisis at hand. That’s what you’re doing now at home. So whether it’s the current pandemic, something else or something yet to come, the past can give all of us hope for the future.
Ways to Build Hope Up in Your Children • BUILD CONNECTIONS
Listen to your kids. Let them talk. Don’t feel like you have to have all the answers. Extroverted children will usually tell you what they are thinking. Introverted children probably won’t, so it is important for you to understand the nuances of your children’s personalities. Help them to share their thoughts by sharing your own thoughts and feelings appropriately. Comfort them and remind them that they are secure and loved.
• BE HONEST AND KEEP TALKING
For example, it is OK to say something like, “Our lifestyle sure has changed. How’s it going for you?” Being honest outloud can be very healing and gives your kids license to talk.
• RESPOND WITH PATIENCE
Children may ask lots of questions and be clingy. Model the steps that will move them toward hope and calm. Responding to kids in a way that’s helpful to them is more of a process where you acknowledge that what is happening is hard, but that there is hope for tomorrow.
• FOCUS ON DOING
Demonstrate to your kids that life goes on by getting up and doing life and encouraging your kids to do the same. Seek balance in activities so there’s not an overabundance of screen and tech time. Seek fun activities that your kids want to try and encourage their efforts. pregnancy & covid Navigating COVID-19 is very challenging for pregnant women. Knowing that knowledge is power will help immensely in eliminating your stress. Read on for questions and answers from Vanderbilt.
M
issy Tatko of Fairview has been monitoring herself and her growing belly ever since she first learned she was pregnant. It’s hard not to obsess over every little sneeze and cough during
COVID-19. “I’m not normally a stressed-out person, but this has been an interesting test,” Tatko says. “I’m just ‘on’ all the time and trying to be as prepared as possible. Now my mother is a real worrier, so she does enough of that for the both of us!” she adds. Tatko will deliver
her baby — a girl — in March and so far she’s had a “normal” pregnancy. “If you can call this period in time ‘normal,’” Tatko jokes. “I write down everything and then I call my mom and we discuss. Since this is my first baby, I wonder what this would have been like if there wasn’t a pandemic, but we’re dealing with it as best we can,” she adds. Read on for answers to many of the questions Tatko and others have sought answers to.

Expecting Q & A’S FOR COVID-19 AND PREGNANCY Answers to the following questions are provided by Jennifer Thompson, M.D., an assistant professor in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
ARE PREGNANT WOMEN AT INCREASED RISK OF GETTING COVID-19? Pregnant women do not have an increased risk of getting COVID-19 at this point in time. However, there does appear to be an increased risk in degree of severity among those women who do end up getting COVID-19 while they are pregnant compared to non-pregnant individuals. The majority of pregnant women who contract COVID in general are asymptomatic or have mild cases of COVID-19. WHAT SYMPTOMS ARE SEEN MOST OFTEN IN PREGNANT WOMEN WHO DEVELOP COVID-19? Symptoms that we tend to see include fever and or chills. If you experience a temperature above 100 degrees farenheit, it’s recommended that you seek medical care to get evaluated. When we look at pregnant women, they tend to report cough as one of their first symptoms. If you do find that you have developed a new cough, it is worthwhile to reach out to your health provider. Regarding shortness of breath, women who experience difficulty breathing or having a really hard time catching their breath, or working hard to breath, that is never considered normal in pregnancy. If you ever have concerns that anything you’re experiencing isn’t normal, it’s important that you contact your health provider. Other symptoms related to COVID-19 that are hard to tease out because they are similar to pregnancy symptoms include fatigue, nausea and vomiting. Additional symptoms include headache, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, muscle aches and loss of taste. However, loss of taste has been reported less frequently among pregnant women. In discussing symptoms with your doctor, you can determine together if you should go get tested for COVID-19. IF A WOMAN HAS COVID-19 EARLY IN PREGNANCY, WILL PRENATAL CARE CHANGE? We are recommending some additional ultrasounds in the third trimester for women who have a history of COVID-19 during pregnancy, to make sure that their baby continues to grow appropriately.

IF I GET COVID-19, DO I HAVE INCREASED RISK OF SEVERE DISEASE DURING PREGNANCY?
SHOULD YOU GET THE COVID-19 VACCINE? According to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, pregnant women may safely get the COVID-19 vaccine as the risk of serious COVID-19 infection in pregnant women is not high. However, if you have a history of a serious reaction to a vaccine ingredient discuss it with your doctor in order to make an informed decision. __________________________________________
Considerations: There is yet no information about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines in women who are pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Animal and human studies are ongoing. The vaccines are not live, however, and are broken down quickly in the body. They do not get into the nucleus of cells.
Data from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention shows that pregnant women have increased risk of hospitalization, ICU admissions, increased risk of mechanical ventilation and an increased risk of mortality in pregnant women compared to non-pregnant women. It’s important to note, however, that the severe outcomes in pregnant women who get COVID-19 are low. Those women at greatest risk of severe disease are pregnant women between the ages of 35 and 44 years old. Similarly, to the general population, black and hispanic individuals who are pregnant appear to have disproportinate rates of COVID-19 infection as well as death rates demonstrating an increased disparity. Additionally, pregnant women with obesity or gestational diabetes may be at an even higher risk of severe disease consistent with what we see in the general population. WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF COVID-19 TO A BABY? The good news is that there’s very limited data on in-utero transmission of COVID-19 to the fetus. There’s only been two well-documented cases of the potential of in utero transmission or what we call congenital infection, suggesting that the risk of babies being infected in utero is unlikely. There have been cases reported of babies testing positive for COVID-19, but these most often occur in women who were infected within seven to 14 days prior to delivery. HOW DO I HANDLE ALL OF THE STRESS AND ANXIETY THAT COMES WITH BEING PREGNANT DURING THE PANDEMIC? There is increased risk for anxiety and depression amony pregnant women. Meditation and yoga can help. There are wellness apps that are available to help reduce stress. Additionally, for people who are concerned about going out, a lot of support providers are offering telehealth appointments. At Vanderbilt, we very much understand that this is a stressful time and that the need for additonal behavioral health and emotional support is really important. ASIDE FROM MASKING, WASHING MY HANDS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING WHAT ARE SOME OTHER MEASURES TO REDUCE THE CHANCE OF GETTING COVID-19 WHILE PREGNANT? Attend your prenatal appointments, including telehealth visits; get your seasonal influenza vaccine to help reduce your risk of getting COVID-19. We know that the flu and COVID-19 are two separate viruses, and there are cases of people getting both. So if we can reduce the risk of getting one of those, that will help insure your health and that of your baby. THE DATA SEEMS TO CHANGE FROM WEEK TO WEEK. WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THAT? The majority of our data so far in this pandemic comes from third-trimester pregnancies. We continue to gather information about what happens to women who develop infection in the first and second trimesters and then recover and the pregnancy continues.

Education
Why Parents Choose a Catholic Education for Their Child It’s one of the most affordable ways to give your child a private education rooted in academics and service.
I
By Michael W. Aldrich
have a confession to make. As a product of the public school system, there’s a lot of things I didn’t know about Catholic schooling and how it differs from other education options — until now. In the spirit of Catholic week (Jan. 31 - Feb. 6), I spoke with parents, principals and the Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Nashville to get a clearer picture of what the Parochial school system is all about. When Debbie Sloan — a mother of four and Nashville native — was choosing where to send her kids to school, she realized she
had a big decision to make. “When the time came for our kids to go to grade school and on to high school, there was a lot of pressure to get a ‘good spot’ and put our kids on the right path,” she says. “A lot of people asked me, ‘are you sacrificing their education for your faith?’ And I won’t lie and tell you I didn’t want to make sure I wasn’t. Now in hindsight, I can say affirmatively — the answer was absolutely not.”

“Because we are selfsupported, we have to charge tuition, but at a fraction of the cost of most private schools,” Hammel says. “We are always continuing to build endowments to improve upon and expand our financial aid program.”
Having graduated from St. Henry and Father Ryan High School herself, Debbie’s children all attended St. Matthew Elementary School — two have now graduated from Father Ryan, one is attending there now and one is still at St. Matthew. Her oldest son is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, so needless to say, she and her husband’s commitment to Catholic education in Nashville is long and strong. “I really believe that the Catholic system truly looks at the whole child and does what’s best for them as individuals,” Sloan says. “The schools are really there for their specific needs to support them both academically and emotionally,” she adds. And contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be Catholic to go to a Catholic school. In fact, only 76 percent of the 6,100 students that make up the 19 area Catholic schools are Catholic, according to research conducted by the Diocese of Nashville. “The Catholic school system isn’t just to push the Catholic faith or indoctrinate,” Debbie continues. “Everyone is welcome; it’s not just for Catholic students.”
VALUE OF SERVICE
Another valuable hallmark embedded in the curriculum of Catholic education is the service project component. Students anywhere from 4to-18 years old participate in them, and it’s not considered a chore. “We find that students typically enjoy doing service for others and happily engage in these projects,” Hammel says. “It could be a class project or something they see that needs doing in their community. The purpose is to develop leadership and show them they can make a difference in the world.” At the high school level, one of Father Ryan’s most recent service projects culminated in one of the largest fundraisers for Relay For Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society. Between the individual attention, affordability and character-driven values, there’s plenty of benefits to Catholic education. St. Ann Elementary School Principal Anna Rumfola perhaps sums it up best. “We want our students to be strong academics, but we also want them to help the world around them. What’s important is that they keep learning” Rumfola says. “When they graduate from us, the learning never stops — the desire to learn is so ingrained in them that it stays with them for the rest of their life.”
FOR ALL STUDENTS
Rebecca Hammel, superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Nashville, echoes this same sentiment of inclusion. “We encourage all students to attend our schools, regardless of faith,” Hammel says. “Diversity is important to us; we have some schools where non-Catholics make up as much as 50 percent of the student body.” One parent whose kids attended St. Bernard Academy told us how “intimate, warm and supportive” she found her interactions with teachers, staff and other parents — regardless of her being non-Catholic. “I felt like my kids were so known there and had so much individual attention,” she says. “We wanted a private-like education for our kids; and these schools were the most affordable way for us to do so.” It’s true, Catholic schools are far less expensive than most private schools. It’s because the Diocese of Nashville’s financial aid program allows them to meet families “where they are at,” according to Hammel.
