Teaching Kids to Pray

I

n these crazy times where anybody and everybody is talking about the cost of everything, worries and even concerns about kids — I can’t help but wonder, where does God fit into all of this? No, this is not a religious magazine per se, but I’d be lying if I told you I could get through my days without my belief in a higher power beyond my little self. Where does faith that everything will work out come from? How can we give it to our children?

And how do you teach a child to pray?

Turns out it’s not so hard. In fact, it’s simple. Little children are remarkably uncomplicated. If you tell them that the world was created by God who had/ has a son named Jesus who loves all little children, they will love that. They won’t say, “Huh. But what about the big bang theory?” Little children don’t need a big explanation about how the universe began, but when it comes to giving them something to believe in, I knew it had to start with me.

But I bumbled along with my faith when I had three little toddlers at home.

We sometimes went to church, sometimes not. That wasn’t so much a reflection on my lack of devotion as it was on my lack of sleep. Somewhere way back when I was small, I learned about God from my Nana. She taught me to pray and a relationship began for me. Later, I married a guy who attended an Episcopal Church all of his life, but who wasn’t 100 percent convinced he knew anything about God. We were in it together.

Having a relationship with God as I raised my kids sustained and guided me.

It makes me glad that I fumbled at my kids’ bedside each night trying to share what I believed I knew. I started with the bedtime prayer. It was simple: “Now I lay me down to sleep / I pray the Lord my soul to keep / If I should die before I wake / I pray the Lord my soul to take.”

Forget that the third sentence is rather gruesome, I sailed right through it because it was true. If for some reason I’m not here tomorrow, Lord, please do take my soul (and take good care of it!).

I was raised to dress up to go to Sunday school at the protestant church my parents belonged to. Dad taught Sunday school, Mom directed the children’s choir. The formality of church didn’t mean that much to me, and neither did Sunday school, but I loved how nice everyone was to me and the cookie we’d get at the end of our lesson. I loved getting home and kicking off my tight shoes and itchy tights. We’d watch a Sunday movie and eat. And it was ... nice.

Somehow different from every other day.

Later, when I moved to New York City for school and faced that frenetic and wonderful city by myself, Nana mailed me a Bible. It was kind of embarrassing when it arrived in front of my roommate, and I remember chucking it aside ... as if. But one late afternoon when I was feeling down and wondering if life was ever going to open up for me, I picked up that Bible and started reading the new testament as Nana suggested. “Just dip in now and then,” she had written in her note. I did from time to time. And while there was never any earth-moving epiphany, I felt comforted. These days I “dip in” a lot.

I did my best to lead my kids “to the well,” without clunking them over the head with it because it’s deeply personal and we all have to find our own way.

My kids have quiet, sustaining faiths. I’m not saying we’re great being this way. I’m saying it helps. And we all need all the help we can get.

NIGHT-WAKING TODDLERS “I would ask her pediatrician about sleep apnea and see how big her tonsils are. My daughter had to have her tonsils removed at 3. Night terrors can be linked to sleep apnea a lot of the time, along with bed wetting and a lot of daytime symptoms.”

Amy Curtsinger “This is exactly what would happen to our daughter. I went every route, and it ended up being her tonsils. They were so big under the surface, she couldn’t breath and her brain was waking her up every three minutes. She was never getting deep sleep.

I had to really advocate and push for the sleep study, but it changed her life. She was 2-anda-half.”

Then, before sleeping, you can read to her five to 10 books .

Then, if she still wakes up during the night, ask advice of the pediatrician. I passed through the same situation last year.”

Aria Lo Giudice “I agree about talking to your pediatrician. For regular, “Can I sleep with you?” night waking (not night terrors) our pediatrician suggested putting a sleeping bag beside our bed in our

room. Kids can come downstairs and crawl in the sleeping bag (preferably without waking you up) and feel safe sleeping beside us but not actually in our bed. It worked great for us, and eventually my son stopped waking up or got tired of sleeping on the floor.”

Katrina R. Henderson “There may be some routines/ patterns during the daytime that are setting her up for a rough sleep routine. Perhaps looking at what may be tweaked (nap or eating schedules, etc.) in the daytime will help.”

“Has she always woken in the night like this? If you’ve exhausted medical reasons for her waking (tonsils, apnea, etc.), it could just be a habit because she hasn’t learned to self soothe.

We had to sleep train our 2 year old and it was so difficult. It took a few days of crying, going in to say goodnight, covering up, and walking out. Again, I would do all the medical stuff first and then talk to your pediatrician about next steps.”

It would break my heart every time and it’s scary and loud and really hard! But talk to her, rub her hair, turn on the light, hold her. She may seem awake but really isn’t. When my daughter would actually wake up she would calm down and go right back to her bed. So no need to sleep on the floor or on the couch. She will most likely grow out of it. Just hold on, Momma!

Are Little Cavities a Big Deal?

Why do you need to care for baby teeth if they’re just going to fall out, anyway?

E

very time you test the temperature of your baby’s bottle with your mouth, or share food, a straw or a utensil with your toddler, you’re also sharing bacteria that cause tooth decay. That’s right, cavity-causing dental decay is an infectious, transmissible disease that parents can unknowingly pass to their children, per the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

After decades of decline, the rates of cavities in children under age 5 are on the rise; experts blame a diet higher in sugary foods and drinks. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of the NIH, reports that one-third to one-half of children

under age 5 develop cavities in baby teeth. In fact, approximately 42 percent of kids between ages 2 and 11 due to sugary diets and inadequate oral hygiene, say the dentists at Brentwood Pediatric Dentistry in Brentwood.

But, like many infectious diseases, dental decay is preventable.

Here’s how to protect your child’s oral health, even if pearly whites are still months away.

Out of this majority, more than 16 percent believed kids didn’t need to visit a dentist until after age 4, reflecting a common belief that cleaning baby teeth isn’t all that important — they’ll just fall out anyway, right? Wrong — decay in baby teeth can harm oral health both now and for years to come.

The bacteria that cause tooth decay in baby teeth can break down enamel of permanent teeth as they begin to come in, making these teeth more vulnerable to cavities. And because baby teeth serve as placeholders that help guide permanent teeth into position, losing baby teeth too early as a result of tooth decay can create a crooked, crowded smile later on.

Scheduling a dental visit by age 1, or six months after the first tooth pops up, helps safeguard oral health in a few important ways say the dentists at Wild About Smiles in Murfreesboro.

“At the first dental visit, we will complete a thorough exam and provide guidance regarding dental and oral development, fluoride treatments, oral habits, teething, nutrition counseling, and oral hygiene instructions,” the dentists write in the “Baby Dental Care” section of their website.

Establishing a relationship with a dentist early on helps to pave the way for smoother, less stressful visits in the future, when your child begins “real” dental cleanings or needs a filling. Visiting the dentist by 12 months of age also helps the dentist spot any early signs of trouble and advise you on the best way to care for your child’s teeth.

How baby cavities begin

What’s the dentist looking for during early visits? Before tooth decay causes a cavity, it may cause white spots on tooth enamel, which signals that the enamel is breaking down. From there, a cavity may look like a small, light-brown spot on your child’s tooth. If the cavity isn’t treated, the spot can grow larger and may turn darker brown or black.

More advanced tooth decay may cause a toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, bad breath, and swelling. Per the American Dental Association, tooth decay in baby teeth can affect a child’s overall wellbeing — kids with painful teeth are less likely to eat enough, and won’t get the nutrition they need to thrive. And with regards to nutrition and healthy teeth, on their blog, Brentwood Pediatric Dentistry writes, “Foods like chips, sticky candy, and soda should be eaten only on occasion if you want your children’s teeth to be as healthy as possible. Instead, choose a diet rich in fruits, veggies, and lean protein.”

What happens if my baby has a cavity?

Start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first one appears, advises Snodgrass King and Young Dentistry. Young toddlers need just a dab of toothpaste — about the size of a grain of rice — while preschoolers can use a pea-size amount. After age 2, add daily flossing to your child’s routine.

Does your toddler need an electric toothbrush? Most dentists say no — any child-sized, extra-soft toothbrush will work. But electric toothbrushes can help coax reluctant brushers and help establish healthy habits, especially when kids choose the toothbrush (or at least the color) themselves. Pair the chosen toothbrush with a kidfriendly brushing app to create a fun routine that makes brushing tiny teeth a bit less burdensome. We’ll say, “Ahhhh” to that!

8 Tips for Cavity Prevention 1. Analyze the diet

Keep sugary and starchy foods to a minimum. Replace highsugar snacks with natural foods when possible.

2. Cut down on snacks

Frequent snacking exposes teeth to sugars. Make sure your child drinks enough water to rinse off his teeth.

3. Avoid sticky foods

Sticky foods form plaque quickly and are hard to get off of teeth. Avoid sticky foods as much as possible!

4. Get rid of the sippy cup early

After about 1 year of age, sippy cups can cause “baby bottle tooth decay,” since liquids will basically sit on teeth.

5. Say, “No” to bedtime drinks

Let your child know he is having his last drink before bedtime and then brush those teeth. Water only after that.

6. Rinsing is key

Avoid transmitting oral bacteria. Rinse items like pacifiers in water, not in your mouth.

7. Brush and floss

Help and monitor your child with this until he’s 7 years old and you know for sure he’s doing it twice a day.

8. Keep dental appointments

A child’s first dentist appointment should be at 1 year of age.

hether you’re looking for enrichment for your child, a way to keep your kids occupied and supervised while you work, or need a short reprieve from parenting, there’s sure to be a summer camp that’s the right fit for your child and family. Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, many sleep-away camps will be up and running either offering alternative programs or by following safety protocols to reduce the risk to campers and staff.

Getting started in your search Before you begin looking into sleep-away camps, create a list of the criteria you’re looking for. Here are some things you’ll want to consider: • What is your budget for summer camp?

• What is the purpose of sending your child away to summer camp?

• Are you looking for a short-term (week or two) or summer-long program?

First, many young people thrive at sleep-away camp. According to the ACA, long before Covid-19, the world-wide outbreak among kids in technology addiction, social skills deficiency, indoor isolation and over-parenting was upon us.

After adopting Covid-19 protocols at camps of all sizes and kinds, in October, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report demonstrating how using multiple Covid-19 prevention strategies at nine U.S. overnight summer camps was highly effective in preventing transmission of Covid-19. The layers of protection used by summer camps included vaccination (93 percent of eligible kids were vaccinated), pre-arrival and frequent screening, creating social “pods” or cohorts within the camp, masking, physical distancing and hand hygiene.

For the summer of ‘22 summer camps everywhere have worked to minimize the spread, maintaining a healthy environment and operations in order to provide campers the very best experience possible with as little disruption as possible.

When considering a sleep-away camp for your child, the CDC’s 2021 recommendations include full vaccination for campers and staff ages 12 and older; and emphasis on physical distancing for those who are not vaccinated and to review state guidelines for where the residential camp is located.

Many summer camps use teens to staff camps. Teens make excellent mentors and can bring liveliness to summer camp programs. However, the programs themselves should be developed by professionals and have professional oversight to ensure kids are getting the most from their camp experience.
