Just Let the Playdough Colors Mix
Y
ou could say our toddler’s obsession with playdough was love at first sight. Since the very first time he smushed his little fingers in one of the cups and watched the bright-yellow substance ooze around his hand, he was hooked. We were still in that “new parent worrying phase,” so we hovered around him like little helicopters, constantly making sure he wasn’t choking or trying to put it somewhere it didn’t belong. We found out quickly that this was a losing battle. Whatever we told him not to do — “Don’t put the playdough in your mouth,” “Don’t smush it in the couch,” “Don’t mix the colors,” etc. — he was more inclined to do it (with a little grin on his face). Eventually, we realized something that has since changed our lives: once you stop being stressed about your child mixing the playdough colors, the second part of your life begins. Obviously, the metaphor here is bigger than playdough; this applies to our parenting-style in general. When you ease off the gas pedal a bit as a parent, you give your kid the chance to take the wheel in the decision making. Toddlers are curious by nature and smarter than we sometimes think they are, so let them be! As parents, it’s important to eventually take a step back and a deep breath. Toddlers LOVE to test boundaries, and that’s not always a bad thing. Allowing them to play independently and figure things out on their own will help them (and you!) later on in their lives. It’s a difficult job. We need to keep one eye on our child now — his stressors, strengths, emotions — and one eye on the adult we are trying to raise. Getting him from here to there involves some struggle, for him as well as for us. The important thing is to allow the struggle. Allow disappointment, but be there to help him work through failure if need be. According to Deborah Gilboa, M.D., founder of AskDoctorG.com, “remembering to look for opportunities to take one step back from solving our child’s problems will help us build the resilient, self-confident kids we need.” So next time you bust out the playdough, or any other messy item, let your child do his thing! Let those colors mix, because when they do, they make new, exciting colors (at least until eventually turning brown). Also, they learn something new! Eventually, the goal is to have your kid(s) need you less. I’d love to have my kid need me forever, but that’s what pets are for, not children. It’s your job to slowly work your way out of the picture. Brutal, but that’s love.
Oh, and in case you need it, here’s a recipe for the best homemade “no cook” playdough this side of the Mississippi: 1. Two-and-a-half cups of flour 2. One-and-a-quarter cups salt 3. One-and-a-half tablespoons Cream of Tartar 4. Five tablespoons of vegetable oil 5. Two cups boiling water 6. Food coloring or liquid watercolors

arts are benign skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They come in many varieties, including plantar warts (commonly found on the bottoms of the feet) and common warts (dome-shaped; commonly on the hands). Contrary to fairy tale lore, toads and frogs have nothing to do with HPV and you can’t get a wart by touching one. Many people think that warts can’t be treated, but they can. The Ryman Celebrates 130 Years with More Music & Experiences than Ever To mark the occasion, we photographed seven “Rymans” at the Ryman.

yman Auditorium has been hallowed ground for performers and artists since 1892. From Houdini to comedian Charlie Chaplin, Teddy Roosevelt to MLK and from Dolly Parton to Lizzo, this stage has welcomed diverse acts and music of all genres, creating the “Soul of Nashville.” In honor of its 130th anniversary this year, the venue is celebrating with new residencies, performances, tour experiences, events, giveaways and more. Shows this month alone include The Masked Singer National Tour on July 6; Hanson on July 15; School of Rock (benefiting Autism TN) on July 20; The Steeldrivers on July 21; and Ricky Skaggs on July 28, among others. New Book Aims to Change the Negative Narrative for Boys

hy do men die by suicide at a rate four times higher than women? It’s one of the questions longtime Nashville licensed counselor David Thomas of DayStar Ministries felt compelled to investigate for his newly released book, Raising Emotionally Strong Boys (Bethany House; $16.99), already a bestseller on Amazon. Thomas, who has more than 25 years of counseling experience, says that many boys are never given the tools they need to learn how to deal with their emotions in a healthy way, leaving them prone to succumbing to these devastating statistics. Socializing Your Baby is Easy Babies and toddlers confined to the company of adults can have socialization issues that continue into adulthood. It’s a good reason for starting a fun play group with friends, or getting into activities away from home.

aren Jackson says that if she believed everything she read about the horrors of isolation for young children over the last two years, she’d be a basket case. Jackson delivered her first baby, a girl, during the early years of the pandemic in 2020. Her little family went immediately into lock down, filled with concerns and worries about the future. “I thought we would do some mommy-and-me music or movement classes when she turned 6 months old, but everything was shut down except for virtual, and that wasn’t what I wanted to do. Luckily, I sort of stick my neck out pretty easily, not a lot of fearfulness,” Jackson says. “But I have friends who still have a lot of anxiety about everything. I can sort of tell that they’ve passed that on to their kids; it’s sort of a lot of uneccessary fear or at least it hasn’t helped.” Two years later, Jackson’s daughter, Emma, is a handful of energy and a little chatter bug at home. “My mom is a teacher,” Jackson says, “So she taught me about drawing Emma out and about how important it has been to talk to

Emma and get her to be responsive. It’s a constant. I say things like, ‘Nana said, hi!, so, say, hi!, Emma!’” A study from Columbia University Irving Medical Center found that babies born during the pandemic scored lower on tests of gross-motor, fine-motor and social skills at 6 months compared with babies born earlier. So parents need to intervene beyond the comfortable walls of their own homes. Of course, parents socialize their babies naturally from birth in the way they engage with them. Making eye contact, smiling, talking and singing to them helps them get a sense of turn-taking. Experts believe that infant socialization is the foundation of communications, encouraging healthy language development and even empathy. When your 1-year-old child wraps their little arms around your neck and lays their head contentedly on your shoulder, it’s probably hard to imagine that they need more than your love, care and affection. But if you take them to a gathering where there are other babies and young children, you can see how they perk up. They connect with them in a way they cannot connect with you. They watch them in rapture. They may tag behind the older ones and explore

playing and sharing oblivious to your presence. This interaction is something they need and enjoy — children speak to each other in a language all their own. Parents who stayed home with their babies and toddlers during the pandemic now face a dire challenge for their kids: we all need friends. Eventually, your little bundle of joy, with eyes only for you, will want a playmate her own size. Peer Play and Social Development Most young children between the ages of 1 and 2 thrive in a playgroup, psychologists say, and the benefits extend beyond pleasure, says Dr. Michelle Boyer-Pennington, professor of psychology at Middle Tennessee State University. Boyer-Pennington specializes in early childhood development and stresses the importance of sameage peer play for toddlers. “Peers are important agents of socialization,” she says, noting that same-age peers serve a different role than parents and older family members. Parents and older children tend to place the baby or toddler in a subordinate role by commanding them or overseeing their activities. “Same-age peers are much less critical and directive,” explains Boyer-Pennington, “so children are freer to try out new roles, ideas and behaviors, thereby acquiring many social and personal competencies they might not otherwise learn in the parent-child/older sibling-child relationship.” She notes that toddlers confined to the company of adults could have socialization problems that continue into adulthood. Researchers say that young children who are denied the opportunity to interact with peers often have social difficulties during later peer interactions as well. Most older babies enjoy seeing other babies and children, but at what age does it become an actual need for interaction with them? “I think that children should have some exposure to other children at as early an age as possible,” Boyer-Pennington says. Babies become responsive to other children’s emotions and actions at approximately 6 months of age, and Boyer-Pennington suggests that at this age it does not particularly matter whether playmates are of the same age. However, by the age of 18 months, toddlers are able to interact with each other in a social manner. “In particular, children this age take great pleasure imitating each other,” she explains. “They often gaze and smile at their partners as they turn their imitative sequences into social games.” By 20 to 24 months, toddler play has a strong verbal component, and playmates often describe play activities to each other or attempt to influence the role their partner should assume. By 2- to 2-and-a-half years, play is even more coordinated, as reflected in the child’s ability to engage in complementary roles, such as chaser and chasee in a game of tag. Although most toddlers will respond positively to other children, shy children may need encouragement to participate in group play. Start slowly and remain positive. If your toddler does not want to join a group of children, let them watch them by your side. Try approaching other children together and asking if you can both play. Make sure to retreat when they feel comfortable within the group. Through this type of positive interaction, most toddlers are able to overcome shyness and establish successful peer relationships Playgroups and Other Options For parents seeking a social setting for their little ones, there are a number of classes and programs for babies and toddlers which the parent or guardian also attends. My Gym is the nationally franchised program offering developmental play for babies as young as 3 months up to children 9 years of age. Parents of children ages 3 and under participate in the classes and help their babies and toddlers learn skills such as hanging and tumbling. Other popular programs include Kindermusik — the early childhood music and movement program that uses music and
parental guidance to nurture a child’s cognitive, emotional, social, language and physical development. And don’t overlook library storytimes and art programs for little ones such as with The Little Art House and more. But remember, instructional programs are no substitute for unstructured play. Bringing young children together does not always result in instantaneous group play. Most 1-year-olds participate in parallel play, playing side by side but not with each other. This does not mean they are not enjoying and learning from the other child’s presence. Marilyn Segal, Ph.D., writes in Your Child at Play: Age One to Two Years, (William Morrow; 1999), “even when they are not playing together, toddlers spend a good deal of time watching and imitating each other.” Remember, play is child’s work. By providing companions and outgoing activities, you are not only making your child’s life more exciting, you are paving the way for a lifetime of friendships. GIVE THEM TIME Creating an environment where your baby or toddler feels comfortable around others plays a significant role in helping them increase their socializing skills. Remember, your child needs at least some degree of familiarity before being expected to interact with others. GO AT THEIR PACE It is best to start with short, controlled playdates or social events. This will allow your child’’s comfort level and abilities to grow over time. ENCOURAGE Encourage interactions with others and consider rewards for good behavior when you see improvement. Praise goes a long way towards helping children do what they’re supposed to do, so don’t hesitate to say positive things about the steps they’ve taken toward being more comfortable around other people than before. DON’T CRITICIZE OR FORCE IT While it’s great that you want your child to learn how to socialize with other children, there needs to be a balance between what they do naturally and the need to constantly nudge them in the right direction by being too critical about their actions. This can make them feel uncertain of themselves, which will lead them away from wanting more contact with others, so try not becoming overly demanding or expecting too much out of your little one as these could backfire on you if things don’t go according to plan. How are Kids Selected to be Sent Out? When casting is taking place for any type of work, an agent receives “specs,” meaning, what the casting director is looking for (look, age range, any specific skills needed for the project). “The agency submits talent to the booking client and negotiates the rate for the job,” says Williams. “If talent is selected by the client to audition or book the job, they will contact the agency with a list of who they want to see for an audition or who they are interested in booking for the job. This is when the parent hears from the agency.” What is Expected of Parents? Obviously, you need to have the ability to get your child to auditions and jobs if he lands them. “Should your child get booked, the parent is required to stay with him on set while he is working,” says Foster. Production people working in film, TV and more have seen it all. Sometimes children can become problems on set, but by far, ill-

The arts awaken personal power in children by helping them discover their talents and passions organically. I know this is true because my daughter loves to sing, dance, act and draw already. Recently, she’s also started reading Shakespeare, watching historical documentaries, playing the piano and taking hip-hop classes. I am not bragging. But I’m keenly aware that I may have been inadvertently putting imagined limits on just how creative my daughter could become. Now, thanks to her example, I am beginning to think there isn’t anything she can’t do. And isn’t that exactly what I want her to believe?
Original Kids Make Their Own Way

think one of the biggest mistakes that a lot of parents and teachers make is spending their time enforcing rules,” says Adam Grant, author of the #1 New York Time’s bestselling Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World (Viking; 2016). Then what should parents be teaching? “Values,” Grant says. “Parents might say, ‘To take joy in your work — what kind of jobs sound fun to you?’ And when a child shows interest and enthusiasm toward something, to support that even if it’s different from what you want them to do.” Short, but sweet, advice.
STOP LIMITING YOUR CHILD

Why do parents put limits on kids’ creative impulses when creative activities clearly benefit real-world performance? My daughter has the rest of her life to discover and pursue creative activities that light her up from the inside and inspire her to be the best she can be. My job as her mother between now and the day she ventures out into the world is to make sure she never runs out of opportunities to practice being her multi-faceted self. She can sift and sort through what she likes best and doesn’t prefer for herself. She doesn’t need me for that, except to remind her that how she spends her time and energy in life is her choice. When I leave this world some day, as of course I will — we all will — I want to depart knowing I exposed my daughter to as much personal enjoyment of life as I could. And the arts will have played a leading role in this endeavor. I don’t want my daughter’s focus in life to be on survival or drudgery; I want her life to be a celebration of the art of being herself. And, in order to do this, she has to explore and assess her talents and abilities in her own ways. If you’re denying your kids access to the arts because you think creativity is less important or less valuable than academics and athletics, I hope you stick around to witness for yourself the important role creativity will play in the evolution of our future. If you are, as I was, inadvertently capping the amount of creative activities your kids participate in to levels deemed reasonable, I hope you will stop. Instead of cutting the arts out of our kids’ schedules, we need

t some point in your child’s life, they will tell you what they want to be when they grow up. If they boldly announce, “I can’t live without acting,” or, “I can’t live without music,” or, “I can’t live without painting,” it’s time to sit up and take notice. It’s a brave announcement to throw a stake in the ground for one’s life — it may happen right around high school. It’s true that not many parents are thrilled by their kids’ declarations regarding the arts, especially if you always hoped for a well-paying steady job or some other structured endeavor that lends itself to a cut-and-dry educational plan for your child. But breath easy. Time and time again you have heard that passion is behind the pursuit of the arts. Your child claiming that he wants to make a life in the arts is a big move. It’s probably wise to investigate what’s in his — and your own — mind, and to go from there.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF: What do I want for my child? What does my child want? What can we agree on?

Jimmy Patrick started working with the family bowling business in 1992 at the age of 14. He caught the bowling bug and continued to bowl competitively for the next 10 years. After graduating from Oakland High School in 1996, he went to bowl collegiately at UAH in Huntsville for Jeff McCorvey. After a short stint at UAH, he returned home to run another family owned bowling center in 1998 in Tullahoma, Tennessee. They recently sold that center in 2020. The first center our family was involved in was the original Murfreesboro Lanes on

LTA opened in 2010 with a restaurant, bar, billiards, bowling, arcade and bumper cars. Many changes have occurred since then, including adding a 2,500-square-foot laser tag arena and removing the bumper cars, but lots of the originals remain.
