DADBEAT By Michael W. Aldrich
Just Let the Playdough Colors Mix
Y
ou could say our toddler’s obsession with playdough was love at first sight. Since the very first time he smushed his little fingers in one of the cups and watched the bright-yellow substance ooze around his hand, he was hooked. We were still in that “new parent worrying phase,” so we hovered around him like little helicopters, constantly making sure he wasn’t choking or trying to put it somewhere it didn’t belong. We found out quickly that this was a losing battle. Whatever we told him not to do — “Don’t put the playdough in your mouth,” “Don’t smush it in the couch,” “Don’t mix the colors,” etc. — he was more inclined to do it (with a little grin on his face). Eventually, we realized something that has since changed our lives: once you stop being stressed about your child mixing the playdough colors, the second part of your life begins. Obviously, the metaphor here is bigger than playdough; this applies to our parenting-style in general. When you ease off the gas pedal a bit as a parent, you give your kid the chance to take the wheel in the decision making. Toddlers are curious by nature and smarter than we sometimes think they are, so let them be! As parents, it’s important to eventually take a step back and a deep breath. Toddlers LOVE to test boundaries, and that’s not always a bad thing. Allowing them to play independently and figure things out on their own will help them (and you!) later on in their lives. It’s a difficult job. We need to keep one eye on our child now — his stressors, strengths, emotions — and one eye on the adult we are trying to raise. Getting him from here to there involves some struggle, for him as well as for us. The important thing is to allow the struggle. Allow disappointment, but be there to help him work through failure if need be. According to Deborah Gilboa, M.D., founder of AskDoctorG.com, “remembering to look for opportunities to take one step back from solving our child’s problems will help us build the resilient, self-confident kids we need.” So next time you bust out the playdough, or any other messy item, let your child do his thing! Let those colors mix, because when they do, they make new, exciting colors (at least until eventually turning brown). Also, they learn something new! Eventually, the goal is to have your kid(s) need you less. I’d love to have my kid need me forever, but that’s what pets are for, not children. It’s your job to slowly work your way out of the picture. Brutal, but that’s love.
Oh, and in case you need it, here’s a recipe for the best homemade “no cook” playdough this side of the Mississippi: 1. Two-and-a-half cups of flour 2. One-and-a-quarter cups salt 3. One-and-a-half tablespoons Cream of Tartar 4. Five tablespoons of vegetable oil 5. Two cups boiling water 6. Food coloring or liquid watercolors

FEED BACK QUESTION: “My 6-year-old had a small wart removed in the spring, but it has grown back. Is there anything I can put on it to help it not be so bothersome to her? We are switching dermatologists ...”
PESKY WARTS IN CHILDREN “Ok, so something like this happened to me. It was not a wart, after all. It was called pyogenic granuloma and it was actually small blood vessels together that looked like a wart to me. I had to get it cut out and they can come back. Google it and see if that’s what it might be?” Margaret Woodis “Apple cider vinegar on a cotton ball, then covered with a bandage! Repeat every other night. My daughter had them on her hands/fingers and this helped them go away super quickly!” Angela Oram “My son has one on his foot and his doctor told us duct tape for six days then leave off for 24 hours, then repeat till gone.”
“My husband and I had warts. He went to the doctor and had his removed and it came back. I removed mine using a home remedy and it did not come back. Warts have seeds that are deep below the surface. Burning them off won’t reach the seeds. Garlic draws them out to the surface. Gone for good.” Mary Beth Bast “Took daughter to dermatologist and she put “bug juice” on it and it went away and never came back.” Alisha Heath “My son had one on the bottom of his foot and I used apple cider vinegar as a couple of people mentioned and it worked great. It has been over a year and it has not come back.”

Andrea Scott Hastings
“To treat warts with garlic, crush up one clove and mix it with water. Apply to the wart and cover with a bandage. Repeat daily for three-to-four weeks.
“My grandson had one on his elbow. I used a circle of the real duct tape gray (not the decorative ones sold in stores); go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and ask for the original. I put one on ev-

ery day and it slowly dissolved. It worked great and never came back.” Cheryl Karcher Taraska “I would be careful about using duct tape. I tried it and the glue from it burned my skin after a day. I would keep it clean with alcohol and use some kind of over-the-counter wart bandage.” John Ayers “This doesn’t help with the current pain, but wanted to share what we tried: my daughter had some removed and it was painful. I looked into natural remedies and tried “Thuja Cccidentalis.” She used for a few days and they disappeared and didn’t return. That was about four years ago! We bought this at Sprouts.” Tracy Gillian Hollis
Myths About Warts, Frogs and Toads
W
arts are benign skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They come in many varieties, including plantar warts (commonly found on the bottoms of the feet) and common warts (dome-shaped; commonly on the hands). Contrary to fairy tale lore, toads and frogs have nothing to do with HPV and you can’t get a wart by touching one. Many people think that warts can’t be treated, but they can. There are many treatments both surgical and non-surgical. Talk to your dermatologist about the best treatment for your child. SOURCE: healthline.com.

New Book Aims to Change the Negative Narrative for Boys
W
hy do men die by suicide at a rate four times higher than women? It’s one of the questions longtime Nashville licensed counselor David Thomas of DayStar Ministries felt compelled to investigate for his newly released book, Raising Emotionally Strong Boys (Bethany House; $16.99), already a bestseller on Amazon. Thomas, who has more than 25 years of counseling experience, says that many boys are never given the tools they need to learn how to deal with their emotions in a healthy way, leaving them prone to succumbing to these devastating statistics. Males have difficulty identifying how they feel about significant life events. They’re also resistant to act when they don’t feel physically or mentally well, and they can engage in more risky activities that are harmful to their health. In addition to his new book, Thomas also has a new workbook

Building emotional muscles is some of the most important — yet most neglected — work in a boy’s journey to manhood. The muscles impact his everyday as a son, brother, student, athlete and friend. These muscles will define who he is as a husband, father, friend and coworker,” he adds. Growing Up by Susan Swindell Day
Worry Not!
Socializing Your Baby is Easy Babies and toddlers confined to the company of adults can have socialization issues that continue into adulthood. It’s a good reason for starting a fun play group with friends, or getting into activities away from home.
K
aren Jackson says that if she believed everything she read about the horrors of isolation for young children over the last two years, she’d be a basket case. Jackson delivered her first baby, a girl, during the early years of the pandemic in 2020. Her little family went immediately into lock down, filled with concerns and worries about the future. “I thought we would do some mommy-and-me music or movement classes when she turned 6 months old, but everything was shut down except for virtual, and that wasn’t what I wanted to do. Luckily, I sort of stick my neck out pretty easily, not a lot of fearfulness,” Jackson says. “But I have friends who still have a lot of anxiety about everything. I can sort of tell that they’ve passed that on to their kids; it’s sort of a lot of uneccessary fear or at least it hasn’t helped.” Two years later, Jackson’s daughter, Emma, is a handful of energy and a little chatter bug at home. “My mom is a teacher,” Jackson says, “So she taught me about drawing Emma out and about how important it has been to talk to
18 july 2022
Emma and get her to be responsive. It’s a constant. I say things like, ‘Nana said, hi!, so, say, hi!, Emma!’” A study from Columbia University Irving Medical Center found that babies born during the pandemic scored lower on tests of gross-motor, fine-motor and social skills at 6 months compared with babies born earlier. So parents need to intervene beyond the comfortable walls of their own homes. Of course, parents socialize their babies naturally from birth in the way they engage with them. Making eye contact, smiling, talking and singing to them helps them get a sense of turn-taking. Experts believe that infant socialization is the foundation of communications, encouraging healthy language development and even empathy. When your 1-year-old child wraps their little arms around your neck and lays their head contentedly on your shoulder, it’s probably hard to imagine that they need more than your love, care and affection. But if you take them to a gathering where there are other babies and young children, you can see how they perk up. They connect with them in a way they cannot connect with you. They watch them in rapture. They may tag behind the older ones and explore
nashvilleparent.com
playing and sharing oblivious to your presence. This interaction is something they need and enjoy — children speak to each other in a language all their own. Parents who stayed home with their babies and toddlers during the pandemic now face a dire challenge for their kids: we all need friends. Eventually, your little bundle of joy, with eyes only for you, will want a playmate her own size. Peer Play and Social Development Most young children between the ages of 1 and 2 thrive in a playgroup, psychologists say, and the benefits extend beyond pleasure, says Dr. Michelle Boyer-Pennington, professor of psychology at Middle Tennessee State University. Boyer-Pennington specializes in early childhood development and stresses the importance of sameage peer play for toddlers. “Peers are important agents of socialization,” she says, noting that same-age peers serve a different role than parents and older family members. Parents and older children tend to place the baby or toddler in a subordinate role by commanding them or overseeing their activities. “Same-age peers are much less critical and directive,” explains Boyer-Pennington, “so children are freer to try out new roles, ideas and behaviors, thereby acquiring many social and personal competencies they might not otherwise learn in the parent-child/older sibling-child relationship.” She notes that toddlers confined to the company of adults could have socialization problems that continue into adulthood. Researchers say that young children who are denied the opportunity to interact with peers often have social difficulties during later peer interactions as well. Most older babies enjoy seeing other babies and children, but at what age does it become an actual need for interaction with them? “I think that children should have some exposure to other children at as early an age as possible,” Boyer-Pennington says. Babies become responsive to other children’s emotions and actions at approximately 6 months of age, and Boyer-Pennington suggests that at this age it does not particularly matter whether playmates are of the same age. However, by the age of 18 months, toddlers are able to interact with each other in a social manner. “In particular, children this age take great pleasure imitating each other,” she explains. “They often gaze and smile at their partners as they turn their imitative sequences into social games.” By 20 to 24 months, toddler play has a strong verbal component, and playmates often describe play activities to each other or attempt to influence the role their partner should assume. By 2- to 2-and-a-half years, play is even more coordinated, as reflected in the child’s ability to engage in complementary roles, such as chaser and chasee in a game of tag. Although most toddlers will respond positively to other children, shy children may need encouragement to participate in group play. Start slowly and remain positive. If your toddler does not want to join a group of children, let them watch them by your side. Try approaching other children together and asking if you can both play. Make sure to retreat when they feel comfortable within the group. Through this type of positive interaction, most toddlers are able to overcome shyness and establish successful peer relationships Playgroups and Other Options For parents seeking a social setting for their little ones, there are a number of classes and programs for babies and toddlers which the parent or guardian also attends. My Gym is the nationally franchised program offering developmental play for babies as young as 3 months up to children 9 years of age. Parents of children ages 3 and under participate in the classes and help their babies and toddlers learn skills such as hanging and tumbling. Other popular programs include Kindermusik — the early childhood music and movement program that uses music and
parental guidance to nurture a child’s cognitive, emotional, social, language and physical development. And don’t overlook library storytimes and art programs for little ones such as with The Little Art House and more. But remember, instructional programs are no substitute for unstructured play. Bringing young children together does not always result in instantaneous group play. Most 1-year-olds participate in parallel play, playing side by side but not with each other. This does not mean they are not enjoying and learning from the other child’s presence. Marilyn Segal, Ph.D., writes in Your Child at Play: Age One to Two Years, (William Morrow; 1999), “even when they are not playing together, toddlers spend a good deal of time watching and imitating each other.” Remember, play is child’s work. By providing companions and outgoing activities, you are not only making your child’s life more exciting, you are paving the way for a lifetime of friendships. Susan Day is Editor-in-chief of this publication and a mom of four.
First Smile to First Friend Encouraging young, budding social skills. PLAY OFTEN Playtime with little ones is crucial for development and growth, so give them plenty of time to engage in activities. GIVE THEM TIME Creating an environment where your baby or toddler feels comfortable around others plays a significant role in helping them increase their socializing skills. Remember, your child needs at least some degree of familiarity before being expected to interact with others. GO AT THEIR PACE It is best to start with short, controlled playdates or social events. This will allow your child’’s comfort level and abilities to grow over time. ENCOURAGE Encourage interactions with others and consider rewards for good behavior when you see improvement. Praise goes a long way towards helping children do what they’re supposed to do, so don’t hesitate to say positive things about the steps they’ve taken toward being more comfortable around other people than before. DON’T CRITICIZE OR FORCE IT While it’s great that you want your child to learn how to socialize with other children, there needs to be a balance between what they do naturally and the need to constantly nudge them in the right direction by being too critical about their actions. This can make them feel uncertain of themselves, which will lead them away from wanting more contact with others, so try not becoming overly demanding or expecting too much out of your little one as these could backfire on you if things don’t go according to plan. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES Take your little ones to storytimes, group swimming lessons, birthday parties, programs just for them, etc. SOURCE: Your Child at Play: Age One to Two Years by Marilyn Segal, Ph.D.

Mom or Dad. “If it is the parents who are pushing their child to work in the industry because they think their child is talented, that never works out for anyone,” says Foster. She says children who really want to do it are the best ones to have on set. “Once on set — I can’t say this enough — children need to have the ability to entertain themselves, be seen and not heard until they are needed, listen to the director and follow directions,” she adds. How are Kids Selected to be Sent Out? When casting is taking place for any type of work, an agent receives “specs,” meaning, what the casting director is looking for (look, age range, any specific skills needed for the project). “The agency submits talent to the booking client and negotiates the rate for the job,” says Williams. “If talent is selected by the client to audition or book the job, they will contact the agency with a list of who they want to see for an audition or who they are interested in booking for the job. This is when the parent hears from the agency.” What is Expected of Parents? Obviously, you need to have the ability to get your child to auditions and jobs if he lands them. “Should your child get booked, the parent is required to stay with him on set while he is working,” says Foster. the arts and innovators they were born to be? Participation in the arts is just as important to raising well-rounded children as participation in academics and athletics. The arts awaken personal power in children by helping them discover their talents and passions organically. I know this is true because my daughter loves to sing, dance, act and draw already. Recently, she’s also started reading Shakespeare, watching historical documentaries, playing the piano and taking hip-hop classes. I am not bragging. But I’m keenly aware that I may have been inadvertently putting imagined limits on just how creative my daughter could become. Now, thanks to her example, I am beginning to think there isn’t anything she can’t do. And isn’t that exactly what I want her to believe?
Original Kids Make Their Own Way
“I
think one of the biggest mistakes that a lot of parents and teachers make is spending their time enforcing rules,” says Adam Grant, author of the #1 New York Time’s bestselling Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World (Viking; 2016). Then what should parents be teaching? “Values,” Grant says. “Parents might say, ‘To take joy in your work — what kind of jobs sound fun to you?’ And when a child shows interest and enthusiasm toward something, to support that even if it’s different from what you want them to do.” Short, but sweet, advice.
STOP LIMITING YOUR CHILD
Allowing Your Child to Fly
Why do parents put limits on kids’ creative impulses when creative activities clearly benefit real-world performance? My daughter has the rest of her life to discover and pursue creative activities that light her up from the inside and inspire her to be the best she can be. My job as her mother between now and the day she ventures out into the world is to make sure she never runs out of opportunities to practice being her multi-faceted self. She can sift and sort through what she likes best and doesn’t prefer for herself. She doesn’t need me for that, except to remind her that how she spends her time and energy in life is her choice. When I leave this world some day, as of course I will — we all will — I want to depart knowing I exposed my daughter to as much personal enjoyment of life as I could. And the arts will have played a leading role in this endeavor. I don’t want my daughter’s focus in life to be on survival or drudgery; I want her life to be a celebration of the art of being herself. And, in order to do this, she has to explore and assess her talents and abilities in her own ways. If you’re denying your kids access to the arts because you think creativity is less important or less valuable than academics and athletics, I hope you stick around to witness for yourself the important role creativity will play in the evolution of our future. If you are, as I was, inadvertently capping the amount of creative activities your kids participate in to levels deemed reasonable, I hope you will stop. Instead of cutting the arts out of our kids’ schedules, we need
“Mom, I want to be an artist.”
A
t some point in your child’s life, they will tell you what they want to be when they grow up. If they boldly announce, “I can’t live without acting,” or, “I can’t live without music,” or, “I can’t live without painting,” it’s time to sit up and take notice. It’s a brave announcement to throw a stake in the ground for one’s life — it may happen right around high school. It’s true that not many parents are thrilled by their kids’ declarations regarding the arts, especially if you always hoped for a well-paying steady job or some other structured endeavor that lends itself to a cut-and-dry educational plan for your child. But breath easy. Time and time again you have heard that passion is behind the pursuit of the arts. Your child claiming that he wants to make a life in the arts is a big move. It’s probably wise to investigate what’s in his — and your own — mind, and to go from there.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF: What do I want for my child? What does my child want? What can we agree on?
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR CHILD:
to allow access to as much arts activity as a child’s schedule permits.
Can you imagine yourself doing something else?
They can set the bar to a level that feels right from there.
Artists don’t make a lot of money until they become very successful; have you thought about how to support yourself?
Don’t be confused about whose job it is to expose our kids to the arts. Arts engagement is a parent’s job first, before teachers or instructors get involved. Engage your children in the arts and watch the magic happen. They will thank you for your encouragement today and in the future with their smiles and feelings of contentment. Christina Katz is a freelance writer, blogger and mom.
What are you willing to sacrifice to be in the arts? You probably won’t make enough money to do anything but eat and pay rent for at least several years. Are you OK with that? Do you need to be a performer or creative artist or do you just need to have a life in the arts? SOURCE: kennedy-center.org.

Currey Ingram Academy was founded as Westminster School of Nashville in 1968 by Carol and Bobby Henderson. Their son, Britt, was not succeeding in his school, and Carol and Bobby felt they had exhausted all options for educating him. Administrators, educators, parents and community leaders came together to develop an innovative learning program and started Westminster School of Nashville. Thanks to a gift from Stephanie Currey Ingram and John Rivers Ingram, the school moved to its current campus and became Currey Ingram Academy in 2002. Little Art House provides small, personalized learning environments offering consistent classes with qualified teachers. As access to the arts in schools wanes, there is an ongoing need for a place people can create freely. Lancaster says, “we are so proud that families trust us with their children and know they will be healthy, happy, have a good time and learn something. People know they can depend on us to deliver quality services every time while also being versatile to different scenarios – especially during our On-The-Go Birthday Parties.” Bradford and Lancaster’s passion for the arts and serving their community are family values that have been passed down for generations. The Little Art House
This year, the team is excited to increase local access to the arts through the Little Art House Foundation. Its mission is to create accessible, personalized and meaningful artistic experiences for local non-profits, schools and community organizations in need. To learn more about donating, applying or volunteering go to LittleArtHouseFoundation.org. The foundation is currently taking applications from non-profits and public school art teachers. It only takes five minutes to apply! Current partners include the YWCA, The Nashville Public Library and Girls Inc. Sign up for Fall classes today! Learn more on our website.

FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT Lanes, Trains and Automobiles
NASHVILLE | 2022
Our family has been in the bowling business since the late ‘60s! Meet the Family Momma Patrick, aka Memo. For 35 years she was in the banking industry and helped in the family bowling business since her retirement in the late ‘90s.
450 Butler Drive, Murfreesboro 615-890-3999
is more than an art studio. It is a place for people to experiment and connect over shared learning experiences. Bradford says, “one of my favorite things is watching the students inspire each other. They bounce ideas off one another, and also see that it’s ok to mess up and try again – both kids and adults. Most importantly they learn they are not alone. Everyone is learning together.”
Jimmy Patrick started working with the family bowling business in 1992 at the age of 14. He caught the bowling bug and continued to bowl competitively for the next 10 years. After graduating from Oakland High School in 1996, he went to bowl collegiately at UAH in Huntsville for Jeff McCorvey. After a short stint at UAH, he returned home to run another family owned bowling center in 1998 in Tullahoma, Tennessee. They recently sold that center in 2020. The first center our family was involved in was the original Murfreesboro Lanes on

Broad Street. In 2008, Jimmy began the vision of Lanes, Trains, and Automobiles. Once he found an old warehouse, he began drawing up the master plan. LTA opened in 2010 with a restaurant, bar, billiards, bowling, arcade and bumper cars. Many changes have occurred since then, including adding a 2,500-square-foot laser tag arena and removing the bumper cars, but lots of the originals remain. We have 3 things that we focus on at LTA when you arrive. We want you to eat, play and party! Oh, and leave a good review if you enjoyed your time! We’re from Murfreesboro and we’re for Murfreesboro for over 60 years. This is our home and we’re dedicated to bringing our city a place where they can eat, play and party!

Happy Backyards
Cool Springs Galleria 1800 Galleria Blvd., Ste. 5040 Franklin 615-595-5582
How many times of you said to the kids, “go outside and play?” Well, how about giving them a real reason to go out and play, give them their very own backyard playground from Happy Backyards. Our name says it all; your kids will be Happy in the Backyard with one of our amazing playsets. Our sets include everything from a clubhouse to a climbing wall, and a slide to a swing. Our exchangeable play parts make it easy to individualize your playset for years of entrainment, excitement and FUN! THREE Great Reasons to Put a Playset in your backyard! 1. HEALTH BENEFITS Get outside to enjoy the fresh air, get physical: climb, swing, jump and most of all have FUN! Research shows that children that have regular exercise experience higher fitness levels, gain stronger bones and muscles and are at reduced risk for chronic health conditions. Playsets also help youths improve motor skills, hand-eye coordination and agility. One of the biggest features is the opportunity to BE IN NATURE! 2. LONGEVITY Playsets last for YEARS! With our modular features, you can even grow your playset as your kids grow. For example, it is as easy as replacing the tandem pony with an additional swing. It changes the set and increases functionality. Our wooden cedar sets are built with solid, treated lumber along with ductile iron swing hangers, steel pivot bolts and high-quality color retaining plastic
components – all built to last! In addition, playsets are not “fad toys” that are played with once and forgotten, end up broken or can’t be shared. Playsets are the gift that keeps giving year after year and generation after generation. 3. RELATIONSHIP BUILDER Get to know the neighbors. Playsets are an invitation to play. Our playsets enable kids to interact, get creative and just play! Be it the castle, fort or clubhouse, your children can entertain their friends and build lasting relationships. It is also a great collector for the entire family; parents feel safer when they can see their kids playing, so not only invite the kids but ask the parents to come visit too and get to know your community! Our backyard playsets can help to build your neighborhood and create life-long friendships for you and your children. When you select a professionally-engineered wooden playset from Happy Backyards, you receive top-quality installation from our install professionals. We will help with your selection process to pick the set that best fits your yard, provides the most features and stays within your budget. It is nice to be the yard that the neighborhood wants to visit. It is great to have the yard the kids want to play in and with our illustrious wooden playsets; you can have that type of yard. We consider our playsets an investment in FUN, so go outside and play!

PRESCHOOL
NASHVILLE | 2022
Southern Stars Preschool
910 Wedgewood Ave. Nashville 615-509-9423
Southern Stars Preschool is part of the STARS Montessori & Educational Group, which has been successfully nurturing young minds since 2003. Southern Stars Preschool, which opened in fall of 2020, is distinct in being a professionally-run preschool with an eye to individualized attention. The “every child is the same” technique does not apply within our walls. We pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to changing times, and it shows in how teachers and staff respond to parents and children. Every child is a learner unto themselves and our teachers are confident in their ability to engage each child successfully. STARS Montessori & Educational Group has over 19 years of experience with three locations (Washington D.C., Alexandria, VA, Nashville, TN) and multiple Montessori-certified teachers who oversee our curriculum plan and train our classroom teachers for daily instruction. At Southern Stars Preschool, we have an established curriculum that not only focuses on the academic but also focuses on the individual child and their needs, as well as cooperative and group play. Our curriculum reinforces that everything is related, showing the connection of topics across the five learning areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, Practical Life, Sensorial, and Geography/Culture. Our curriculum is available in book form for all parents, so they may follow along with our daily activities. At Southern Stars Preschool, our Montessori and STEM teaching styles are based on the concept of child-led exploration, which includes question-based and hands-on learning, critical thinking, open-ended exploration and applying self-initiative. Our teachers provide guidance to each child that invites the type of programming STEM is known for: opportunities for hands-on discovery, learning through experimentation, allowing for students to explore areas that draw their interest, bringing concepts together to create a more holistic academic experience and development of practical and real-world skills that move beyond rote learning.
We offer many daily activities that tie in directly to learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math and the arts. Some learning activities the children may enjoy can include: • Planting a seed and observing its growth from seed, to sprout, to leaves and flowers • Creating and observing rain gauges to learn about natural processes such as evaporation • Blowing bubbles and watching how they respond to different environmental elements, such as breezes and different surface materials the bubbles may touch • Learning about the design of things by playing with materials designed to nest into one another or connect with one another in a clear pattern • Categorizing objects into groups that share the same trait (size, shape, color) Our STARS Education staff are committed to delivering a professional and nurturing environment for our families. You choose us because you want the best for your children, and so do we. We use the Kriyo app in order to keep parents up to date with daily activities, and easy communication between teachers and parents. We also have a Facebook and Instagram page that has daily activities for STEM and Montessori work at home. Our schools have a dedicated phone line for parents to speak directly to the director and teachers when a need arises. Our goal is to give you the best preschool educational experience possible and we welcome you to join the STARS family!

SHOPPING MALL
NASHVILLE | 2022
RiverGate Mall
1000 Rivergate Pkwy. Goodlettsville 615-859-3458
RiverGate Mall is your one-stop destination for all your fashion needs. Everything you need for your family, from children’s clothing to shoes for back-to-school to that special outfit and accessory for a night on the town, can be found at our wide variety of fine merchants. While you are here, dine at the RiverGate Mall food court and savor the array of tasty options. Parking is easy and it’s never raining or too hot or too cold inside the mall. Anchored by Dillard’s and JCPenney, RiverGate Mall was founded in 1971 to serve northern Middle Tennessee. Many of our longtime guests and neighbors tell us they have fond memories of “cruising” the mall when that was in fashion, and we are proud to have the world’s first Underground by Journeys store as one of our fine merchants. This year, we celebrated our fiftieth anniversary and look forward to the next fifty years. With over 1.1 million square feet of shopping, RiverGate Mall is professionally managed by Atlanta-based Hendon Property Management LLC and has 24/7 security for your shopping comfort. It’s interesting to note that RiverGate Mall is actually in two cities, as the city limit lines of Goodlettsville and Nashville run right through the center of the mall. We are conveniently located just of I-65 at the Rivergate Parkway exit #96. Mall hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Friday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.
RiverGate Mall has always enjoyed hosting a variety of community events and will continue to do so. Event times can be found on our website www.rivergate-mall.com and are regularly posted on Facebook and Instagram. Valentine’s Day is always a special day to come and shop for that sparkly keepsake for the special person in your life. The Easter Bunny always makes an appearance and has a huge age-segmented Easter egg hunt along with photos with the Bunny himself. In the late summer, we host a Back-to-School event where over five hundred book bags filled with school supplies are given to children as you shop for those essentials for your growing children. A community favorite for parents and kids alike is RiverGate Mall’s annual Touch-A-Truck event, where kids get a rare opportunity to climb in big trucks, law enforcement vehicles, and, if the weather cooperates, a police helicopter. Of course, we always celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day with those special gifts for your mom and dad. And no year would be complete without a visit from Santa Claus who comes and stays at the mall throughout the Holidays for that special visit, maybe a letter of gift wishes and a picture with jolly ole St. Nick himself. Watch our social media for new and exciting things to come at RiverGate Mall.

Dr. Tracy Pack
NASHVILLE | 2022
Having the opportunity to serve patients since 1987, Dr. Tracy Pack has had the unique opportunity to positively change many lives. When seeing former patients years after their treatment, they are excited to share their beautiful set of teeth that continues to make it easy for them to smile. While he loves crafting remarkable smiles, he derives much of his joy from the daily interactions with patients and their families. Dr. Pack loves working with children and adults alike—they all have stories to share and dreams to confide, and he is appreciative of those exchanges

Dr. Pack has had the blessing of watching his practice flourish due to his vast skills in a wide range of orthodontic techniques, along with staffing an exceptional team to ensure the best experience possible, from your first call to your last visit. He is able to customize care in a way that is perfect for each patient’s specific concerns and goals, all the while doing so in a comfortable and efficient manner. Dr. Pack is also the only orthodontist in the office, which means he is always the one to monitor and track each patient’s progress. The Pack Orthodontics team is dedicated to providing a welcoming and fun environment, while being proficient and thorough. Joking around and laughter are always heard around the office. They pride themselves in making meaningful connections not only
with the patients, but also with the amazing dental offices they work with regularly. Educating all that connect with the Pack Team is also a pivotal action to culminate the health and desired outcome of each patient’s treatment. “It is remarkable to be in a profession that combines medicine, science and art, which allows for personal connections…and that brings so much happiness to the world,” Dr. Pack states. The first step to a healthier and more attractive smile is a complimentary consultation with Dr. Pack involving a few assessments and a clinical exam. The team will review the proposal in depth, and answer any questions you may have. Many of the treatment plans involve traditional metal or clear ceramic braces for all ages. Pack Orthodontics also offers in-house aligner therapy. They provide an intraoral scan in their office instead of goopey impressions. Dr. Pack personally adjusts each step to best suit the patient’s needs, and the assistants create the aligners in their lab. As one can see, Dr. Tracy Pack and his Pack Orthodontics team cares for more than just straight teeth. It’s consistency, community and care. It’s making sure their patients are treated like family and friends.
