You’re Your Kids’ Favorite Rockstar

— Father’s Day Reflections from a Former Musician —

Iused to sing to late-night crowds with a blues/funk band in dusty Nashville dive bars. Back then, I never expected my big break would come with fatherhood — but it did. Now, I sing to my two kids, wife and occasionally the neighbor’s cat when she wanders into our backyard. In fact, I’m sort of on a sold-out, 2,000-night concert run.

I don’t remember ever having a more captive audience than while singing “You Are My Sunshine” to my now 5-year-old when he was a baby drinking his nightly bottle. And when his sister arrived last year, my listenership doubled. Turns out, I’m my kids’ favorite rockstar.

Research shows that your voice is the most significant part of your baby’s world, and it anchors them to every resource that they need for growing and developing. When we sing to our kids, their brains are exposed to the sounds, rhythms and rhymes that eventually end up being the building blocks of communication. More importantly, you create a stronger emotional bond with them.

In addition, studies show that music builds attention, working memory and language development. It’s also highly motivating and emotionally satisfying, which is key to learning.

My wife sings, too (though much better, I’ll admit). Between she and I, somebody’s always carrying a tune. We sing when we cook, when we clean, when we shower, when we drive; we’re a never-ending jukebox.

We seem to have a song for everything: waking up, brushing teeth, going potty, cleaning up and, of course, going to bed. But most of our “Greatest Hits” are improvised narrations of whatever we’re doing at that moment.

The other night, my up-until-recently-nonverbal firstborn was wanting to “help” put his little to sister to bed. In her dimly lit nursery, I sat in one corner, rocking baby back and forth as she drank her warm bottle; he sat in the opposite corner, quietly listening as I cycled through my typical nightly catalogue (“Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley, “Sweet Child of Mine” by Guns N’ Roses, etc.). However, when I got to my usual closer, “You Are My Sunshine,” something unexpected happened.

“You are my sunshine,” I sang. “My only sunshine,” he answered.

“You make me happy,” I continued, with a humongous smile on my face.

“When skies are gray,” he sang back.

Our first duet! Can you believe it?! Ever since then, he’s been joining me for our nightly concerts, and it’s now one of the things I look forward to most each and every day.

So, sing to your kids. Do it as much as you can. Make it weird. Not only does it build connection, but it promotes brain development and listening skills. Don’t worry if you can’t carry a tune, your kid doesn’t care. After all, you really are their favorite rockstar.

Popular Exhibit Gets Upgrade at Adventure Science Center

Get ready to blast off this summer as the Adventure Science Center in Nashville unveils a major overhaul to Wonders of the Universe, their popular exhibit gallery on the second floor, starting Saturday, June 1.

WHAT’S NEW?

A model of NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover — which is the size of a small car — will be displayed in a Mars diorama, offering visitors an immersive experience of the Red Planet.

Wonders of the Universe also features a life-sized comparison of NASA’s Hubble and James Webb telescopes, showcasing their contributions to space exploration. The exhibit includes interactive displays plus a real Mars meteorite.

A NEW PLANETARIUM SHOW

In addition, the science and technology center’s Sudekum Planetarium will start showings of Mars: The Ultimate Voyage This new, animated show transports viewers deeper into the mysteries of the universe, highlighting real NASA research and initiatives to prepare the next generation of astronauts for travel to Mars.

Wonders of the Universe opens to the general public on Saturday, June 1 at 9 a.m.

Finally, perhaps you are able to have a party at home, but are just too worried that your house isn’t big or exciting enough. In my experience, some of the best (and cheapest) birthday parties I’ve ever hosted were in our home, so just don’t worry about it. Your child will love it and that’s what matters.

— TELL YOUR CHILD’S STORY —

If your child likes all kind of fun and making messes, maybe it’s time to bring in a little squeaky-clean foam!

Themes are more than a fun decorating technique today; they are the glue that can hold your party together and they offer several benefits, too.

“While not all parties require a theme, having one can offer many benefits, such as easier planning, increased awareness of your child and a more memorable experience,” says special event pro Teri Jakob.

“They give your event a unique identity, personality and soul to the story you’re telling about your child.”

So obviously, the best place to start is with your birthday boy or girl. Who are they? What do they like? What are their favorite things in life? Activities? Foods? With this in mind, you can fill out your party with details.

Theme your party from activities to refreshments. Then, create immersive experiences that bring your child’s story to life. Make sure that you keep the theme going throughout your event. Brainstorm ideas by searching online, making sure everything ties back to your original goal of celebrating your child for who they are.

GET PERSONAL

1. Display a birthday photo

Displaying a birthday photo (or photos over the years) is a great way to celebrate your kiddo!

2. Personalize a sign

Kids love seeing their name! You can order one of these on Amazon or any number of online retailers or go ahead and print something out yourself that you made.

3. Create a photo booth

Everyone has a camera in their phone now so designate someone (a friend or older family member) to take different pictures of the party group and give each child a photo to remember your child’s party. Use theme props for fun and if you have a polaroid camera, even better!

4. Party favors

Party favor packs personalized for your child are adorable and special. Check online retailers like Oriental Trading Company or splurge with customized M&Ms. You can do anything from tumblers to stickers or sunglasses.

A little girl who loves the beach can have an ocean theme with a fish photo wall, small, customized beach buckets,Goldfish crackers, Swedish Fish, etc.

THEME IT OUT

It’s all about what your child likes and is all about this year. Combine your child’s interests to come up with your theme, says Sabrina Maldonado of Stay Golden Designs.

“People are getting more creative with themes,” says Maldonado. “We’re seeing people combine their kid’s interests into a theme, so themes can revolve around the birthday kid’s favorite movie, sport or activity — so long as it’s true to who they are!”

One character that will continue to be huge for 2024 is Barbie. But there’s also The Little Mermaid, Super Mario Brothers and superheroes. Anything Taylor Swift-themed is a crowd-pleaser, too. But don’t overlook glamping parties, glow parties, inflatable parties and bringing in fun activities like foam or carnival games.

On top of that, Maldonado says stages and platforms are on request since kids love being on stage and it can elevate their backdrop for all-important photos.
