John T. King Pediatric Dentist

Primary teeth, or baby teeth, are very important as the child grows. These teeth hold space for permanent teeth that need to erupt when the child is older. If the back teeth are lost early, your child would need an appliance to hold the space for these future teeth. These appliances are generally called ‘space maintainers.’ Primary teeth are also important for your young child to function/chew with as the diet changes.

Why are some children put in braces so early?

A:

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children in the United States have an orthodontic screening by an orthodontic specialist by age 7. That doesn’t mean that the children begin treatment at that age. It simply means that a specialist should evaluate the child. If early, interceptive treatment is recommended, the goal should be to properly align the bite and the teeth within a one year time frame. There are several indicating factors that a child may need early treatment, such as creating room for crowded, erupting teeth and fixing crossbites in the front and back of the mouth to create facial symmetry. Ideally early treatment will reduce the need for permanent tooth removal and also help to reduce the time for braces in the future.

motherhood in a bumper car

Y

ou’re at a carnival waiting in line to get on the bumper cars. You don’t really like those hard-hitting cars or even some of the riders with the devil in their eyes who only want to jerk you silly with whiplash, however you’re there, and now it’s your turn to run across the padding and find the car that you want. “No running!” someone shouts, as everyone runs. It’s annoying, because if you slow down one bit — bam! The shiny red one you wanted is snapped up fast and — bam! Grabbing at a blue one you watch as someone else’s legs slip into that deep, black seat. The fun-house music’s starting to make you sick, and with few choices now, you’re suddenly experiencing a bad memory where you’re the last one picked for the team. You’re stand there looking like it’s no big deal, but inside it’s a really, REALLY big deal. So there you are, this little banged up green bumper car in the corner, facing the wrong direction. The ride lurches to a start, and you’re slammed over and over again until you finally manage to free your pathetic green machine and you sputter away. But everyone’s doing better than you, so when your car groans once again into a corner, you decide you’re just going to ride the rest of it out there, wedged safely, game over. The funny thing about the ride is we’re all in here together. It’s an unhappy analogy for motherhood. We’re all moms on that bumper car ride, and everybody wants the shiny red car, so we all chase it with our blue one or pink one or yellow one and we try to destroy it. We snicker about the green one stuck in the corner. Whether it’s plain, old competitiveness or whether we really don’t wish one another well, when motherhood is like a bad bumper car ride, things have really gotten out of hand. Motherhood’s supposed to be the great equalizer in life for women, isn’t it? When you become a mom you are at last in the sisterhood, no? That’s what we hoped it would be — a shared purpose, a common goal. So why this undercurrent of venom today that seems somehow new? The criticizing of each other? Motherhood is the same intense all-consuming job it’s always been, only today there are blogs, Facebook posts, Pinterest and commercials on TV pitting us against one other as if to ask, “Are YOU mom enough?” And so we are asking that of each other. My short answer? Heck yeah, I’m mom enough. My long answer: Now that everyone’s opinions are shared far and wide for everyone to read, many mothers feel backed into a corner. They really are questioning themselves and over compensating for their kids to assure that they are. Dare I add that throughout all of history, there’s never been more mothers on anti-depressants than in this current day. Why? Aren’t we having fun? In a world where we could be sisters, where we could let one another be and not give a hoot whether we’re offering organic or fast food, breastfeeding or formula, we have permitted judgements of all kinds to enter our lives. It’s not possible to fit life as a mom into one acceptable, perfect puzzle that everyone agrees is perfect, so why try? Why care? Life’s a mess! Let’s not be so harsh. Moms don’t have to be bullies to each other. We have a feature in this issue on that — it’s on page 43. Give it a read, think about it ... and then ... let’s just be friends.

COVER KIDS 2013 Put SPecial needs kids on your covers Dear Editor, Nashville Parent magazine is a great resource for local families. I have appreciated it many times myself. However, I have a major gripe. Of the six years that I have lived in Nashville, I have noticed maybe one cover featuring a child with apparent special needs. Sure, you include photos of special needs children in your regular special needs issue, but usually not on the cover. This year, I was gut-wrenchingly disappointed to note that not even ONE of the finalists in ANY of the age categories had apparent special needs within the Cover Kids contest! That is a tremendous shame, shame, shame. People come to this city for our awesome pediatric healthcare at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. That alone is reason enough to shine a light on the special needs community. But there are so many others. Take a parent out for coffee one day, or be (visibly) present at a local special needs advocacy event, and you’ll begin to understand what I mean. Gretchen N. Vaught Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital Family Advisory Council Member

“Unethical” voting Dear Editor, When I entered [my son] Jackson in Nashville Parent magazine’s 2013 Cover Kids contest, I already knew how cute he was. I just didn’t realize that all my friends, family, business associates, neighbors and friends of friends would take the time and effort to vote for my son. At one point he had 300

12 july 2013

votes and his nearest competitor had somewhere in the 90s. The next nine days would tell, so I rallied on sending more e-mails, sharing with more friends and family, and continuing to garner votes. Later on, as I was checking votes in his category (13 - 35 months), I noticed another child suddenly picking up votes. I watched and monitored and saw how after three days of having only 20 - 25 votes, the child was suddenly getting 40 - 50 votes in a 30-minute time span. I called my Mom, and the first thing she said was, “She’s buying votes.” I started to disagree, but then it made sense ... No one can go up that quickly in that short of a time without something else going on. Either making up multitudes of e-mail accounts, or buying votes, it wasn’t fair. I checked online and realized, yes, you can buy votes. And I was furious. That night I went on forums, I called friends and I had my Mom contact her friends and business associates. I made out fliers, passed them out in my subdivision, re-posted again and again on Facebook (yes, I lost a few friends this way) and attempted to get votes legitimately. Jackson’s votes once again rose, and he was leading in his age group. Last night of voting and I was watching Jackson’s votes. He was still steadily climbing and was 100 votes ahead of the other child. At about 7 p.m. though, the other’s child’s votes were rising and by 11:59 p.m. the other chid won with 1,395 votes. I was upset, not because my son had not won, but because he had won, ethically won this contest, yet here was Skylar 800 more votes obviously purchased by her mom. Just to clarify, I am not a sore loser. I have been in the midst of many contests, many auditions and callbacks that were tight races to the end. I am an actress who spent several years in Los Angeles and the casting people chose based on what they saw, or possibly what they didn’t see. These weren’t just contests; these were people trying to get careers going for themselves. But every audition I went to, every time I had a callback, I knew that if I were chosen for a part,

it was because they wanted me for the part, not because someone paid them to take me. I made contact with Nashville Parent around 9 a.m. the next morning. Unfortunately for all involved, not just me, since the term “unethical” was not clearly defined in the rules for the contest, the magazine said there was nothing that could be done, but that next year’s contest would be different and more clearly defined. Moms: Make sure you read the fine print and as long as it says “unethical voting “ or “suspicion of unethical voting” you can be sure that someone in your category can and most likely will buy votes on-line. The choice is up to you. For me, I would rather win fairly, than know I had to pay money to make my child win. Dani Hammer

Tell us something funny your kid has said. Maybe your funny moment might make someone smile today. “When my son was 7 he was in the dugout talking to his buddies. One of the little boys said something about wishing a parent wouldn’t smoke around him because he was allergic. My son says just as loudly as possible, ‘Well, I have to smell pot smoke at home all the time.’ Absolutely mortified, I ask him what he’s talking about since we’re not pot smokers. He replies, ‘You know, when you’re cooking and you burn the food.’ That was his first lesson about pot/marijuana, and to use the word pan from now on!” Holly Sivley

Changing Table Buckles.

Does anyone actually use them?

“Definitely with squirmy kids!”

“Just cover them up.”

I always covered them, the less on those tables that had to touch my babies the better off we all were. I always had big thick, disposable changing pads and threw them in the trash. Tracey Osborne-Vazquez

As a mother/babysitter/preschool teacher/child care worker, I only use them with VERY squirmy kids and only if the changing pad/table is up off the ground. Tami Worley Holloman

“I never used them.”

Tucked underneath! Never used them! Heather Madewell Cleland

“I never use the ones on public changing stations.”

Parents please clean up if your child pees or poops on the changing table. That’s disgusting and nasty and it’s why I don’t use them!

Amber Jones

“Take them off.”

kids with freckles

Q

I thought that only blonds and redheads get freckles, but our dark-haired, dark-skinned toddler has lots of them. What could be the cause?

Freckles tend to go along with other traits, such as fair skin and light colored hair. However, the genes that cause freckles are not exclusive to those other traits. Freckles are of course seen on some darker skinned individuals, and this is not indicative of any problem. Another unusual combination of traits is seen on the Solomon Islands, where about 10 percent of the brown skinned inhabitants have striking blond hair. This was found to be due to a gene variant that those individuals carry. Regarding the freckles on your child, it should be determined that the spots in question are indeed freckles and not some other skin lesions, if there is any doubt. There are some conditions that are associated with abnormal spots on the skin, but assuming that your pediatrician has determined them to be truly freckles, there is no cause for alarm.

taking a drug holiday

Q

My 10-year-old son has been on ADHD medication for a year, and I worry about it stunting his growth. Is it OK to take a break from the meds over weekends or holidays? Every child should have his own treatment plan when it comes to ADHD medications. A child who tends to be inattentive (but not disruptive) at school should do just fine to take a “drug holiday” on weekends and vacations. However, a child who’s disruptive may have behavioral problems at home that would warrant continuation of the medication. If your son seems to do fine at home without his meds, then it might be acceptable to consider a drug holiday. Often, parents note that their child seems to catch up on sleep, eating and perhaps even growth during such breaks from medication. When prescribed and monitored appropriately, it’s generally not felt that ADHD medications affect ultimate adult height, but catch-up growth is often noted during drug holidays. To complicate matters slightly, some ADHD medications have a long half-life, meaning that it takes several days for them to get in and out of your child’s system. They don’t start to “kick in” for perhaps a couple of days but also take a few days to wear off if your child stops taking them. These types of medications wouldn’t be appropriate to stop over a weekend but might work out fine over a longer break from school. Talk to your pediatrician about your child’s individual treatment plan to see what’s best for him.

kids health

By Susan Day

WHAT ALL KIDS SHOULD KNOW

“P

arents are bad at risk assessment,” says Christie Barnes, author of The Paranoid Parents Guide (HCI; 2010). “We are constantly overestimating rare dangers while underestimating common ones.” But parents are fed a steady stream of worst-case scenarios daily on Internet and TV, so it’s no wonder they’re jittery. Still, do you want a a kid who can’t fend for himself if you’re not there? Here are the essential things kids need to know: PERSONAL INFORMATION • Know their first, middle and last names • Memorize parents’ names and how to spell them • Memorize home phone number and address • Memorize parents’ cell phone numbers • Know how to get home in their neighborhood

KIDS? Why are today’s parents so quick to rush in and save their kids at every impasse if the goal of parenting is to raise an independent kid? In this post - 9/11 world, do your child a favor and empower him to handle difficult situations on his own.

HOW TO FIND HELP • Recognize people who help kids like fire fighters, police officers, lifeguards, teachers, employees at businesses, other adults with kids KNOW THE TALKING RULES • Don’t talk to approaching adults you don’t know • Don’t trust people who need help from a kid • Teach kids to say, “No,” anytime they are unsafe HOW TO MAKE CALLS • Make sure that your child knows how to use a variety of phones by giving him practice • Make sure your child knows how to call 911 • Post important numbers for him — if he uses a cell phone, make sure he has key numbers in his contacts AVOIDING DANGEROUS SITUATIONS • Make sure your kids always ask permission to go out or to a friend’s — if parents are unavailable then the child is not permitted to go • Never go anywhere alone • Teach kids safety on the street (crossing roads) • Teach kids never to go into bodies of water alone • Teach kids about off-limits household things like electronics, chemicals, prescriptions, etc. • Teach kids how to unlock doors and windows — and how to climb out of a first-floor window • Teach kids how to run fast in the event they need to get away from something unsafe • Teach kids how to unbuckle a seat belt and get out of a car on the curbside only • Make sure your kids can swim • Consider giving kids a self-defense course Source: safekids.org

Power Up! these five great life skills...

1. Easy to learn self defense 2. Vital safety tips 3. How to handle Bullies 4. What to do when parents aren’t around 5. What to do when confronted by strangers Over the last 43 years, I have developed a curriculum that has not only proven to be easily learned and mastered, but more importantly, very effective. We start by teaching children how to safely avoid dangerous situations and then how to manage those situations if they do occur. Our street proofing skills have proven to empower children to take precise and effective action only when needed.

string city brings country history to life

K

ids of all ages are in for a treat at the Nashville Public Library with free performances of the new puppet show String City. Two years in the making, the show’s the result of a collaboration between the library’s Wishing Chair Productions and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and it’s nothing short of spectacular. More than 30 magnificently handcrafted marionettes, rod puppets and shadow puppets tell about country music’s humble beginnings and its modern-day successes. The history is told through songs, and the soundtrack features music from Minnie Pearl, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Garth Brooks, Loretta Lynn, Taylor Swift and more. This must-see production takes place Fridays and Saturdays at 10 and 11:30 a.m. The library is located at 615 Church St., Nashville. Call 862-5800 or visit library.nashville.org. local briefs canoe the caney for plenty of fun adventures

A

hoy there! Looking for a unique summer birthday adventure not to be beat? Try Canoe the Caney (canoethecaney.com) for a customizable pirate or princess birthday adventure. Canoeing parties costs $20 - $30 per person depending on what you want. The Pirate Adventure (geared for boys 12 and younger) includes a costumed pirate to mingle with your guests and a pirate climbing wall; the Princess Adventure (for girls 12 and younger) perches your royal highness in the canoe with a crown on her head and wand in hand. Canoe trips can take two hours or longer, but ask the folks for their suggestions when you make the recommended reservations. General Manager Jason Carver says canoeing the Caney is great for all ages, weekdays and weekends, birthdays or not, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Get there by 9 a.m. to avoid crowds on the weekends, he says. And if you’re looking for more action than a canoe can provide, consider paddle boats or jet ski rentals from Canoe the Caney’s other company, waverunnerrentals. com. They deliver water vehicles to 13 Tennessee lakes (call 931-858-2628 or visit waverunnerrentals. com). Canoe the Caney is located at 17055 Smithville Hwy., Silver Point (about 30 minutes from the Nashville airport). Call 800-868-9232 to learn more and visit canoethecaney.com.

Canoeing the Caney Fork River — a summer adventure for kids of all ages!

host a backyard movie event

common core for kids good or bad?

Now you can bring the fun of the drive-in movies to your own backyard for a fantastic summer’s evening (sans the cars!) or order it up for a special event or celebration (fundraiser, perhaps?) Joining together with friends to foot the rental fee (and of course, for choosing the right yard) is a great way to offset what may seem like a hefty price tag. FunFlicks rents inflatable movie screens — choose from several sizes starting at $299 for an 18-foot screen all the way up to a 45-by-38-foot screen for $1,199. The price includes the sound system, digital projection, VHS/DVD player, tables and cables. A FunFlicks event crew does the set up — all you have to do is provide the movies, home videos, popcorn, candy and soda — whatever you want! Visit FunFlicks online at funflicks.com.

When it comes to public school education, plenty of Williamson parents are asking, “What is this Common Core stuff?” for good reason. The Common Core standards now partially implemented in Tennessee’s public schools refers to the set of national education standards created by private, nonprofit education groups and state education departments adopted by 45 states. While federal agencies did not have a role in the program’s creation, the Obama administration signaled to states in 2009 that they should embrace the standards if they hoped to win a grant through the federal program known as Race to the Top. Superintendent of Williamson County Schools Mike Looney attempts to answer parent concerns at wcs.edu/ common_core.htm. Initiatives have popped up across the nation to stop Common Core. With kids, you’ll end up spending most of your time in the family areas, but be to make your way over to The Voyage, voted the the number one Wooden Coaster on the planet five years in a row by Amusement Today magazine. for a free drink ... all day ... every day! The food is good, there’s a huge variety and it’s affordable, too. There’s even an allergen-friendly menu. Full menus and prices are all available online, which helps you plan your budget. “HoliCash” wristbands can be purchased in the gift shop. This is an awesome feature for those wanting to go hands-free. Put whatever amount of money you want on the band and use it for purchasing souvenirs, food or lockers. Locker wristbands are also great because you don’t have to worry about losing your key or forgetting your number; simply scan the band to open your locker — plus you get up to five bands per locker for your crew. Stash your stuff and head out to explore Splashin’ Safari — the number one water park in the nation for 2011, according to TripAdvisor. New in Splashin’ Safari is Hyena Falls, which features four in-the-dark water slides, each ranging from four to five stories tall. Or, if you dare, take a ride on the new Mammoth, the World’s Longest Water Coaster, which features seven drops giving you lots of air time! Or, try out the Wilde-

beest, which is the second longest water coaster in the world. Both are thrilling and sure to leave you soaked! For the little ones, there’s Safari Sam’s Splash Land, featuring eight water slides sized just for them, spray features and more. Forgot sunscreen? Don’t worry, it’s free and stations all around the park. Be sure to change clothes before heading back to the Holiday World side (by the way, it won the cleanest park award from the “Golden Ticket Awards” for the last 12 years) as there are restrictions on clothing and swimwear. Be sure to buy your tickets online to save $2 - $5 per ticket. There are even more discounts if you bring an empty Pepsi can or Bunny Bread wrapper, which can save you anywhere from $2 - $11 on a single-day ticket (certain rules apply) and more info can be found on the website. Before you leave the park, you can also buy a next-day ticket for just $27! Watch the park’s Facebook page for random giveaways, too. — Kiera Ashford

dollywood

2700 Dollywood Parks Blvd. Pigeon Forge, TN dollywood.com Admission: $56 ages 12 and older, $44 ages 4 - 11 Parking: $9.11 Bank on lots of fun at Dollywood! Nestled in the lush mountainous environs of the Smoky mountains, Dolly Parton’s fabulous theme park boasts an extreme amount of fun and entertainment for all ages — with more than 40 rides to tickle your fancy! Dollywood sports a few great coasters, so start off with Blazing Fury. This indoor adventure puts riders in the dark with a storyline to boot. The theme: an out-of-control fire engulfing an 1880s town. Scenes are set throughout the journey, and the final plunge zips through a pool of water. The Tennessee Tornado packs a punch! This smooth coaster features three inversions, an amazing butterfly loop and a fierce, unexpected 120-foot drop into a tunnel. Once you’ve caught your breath from that, head to The Mystery Mine. It’s a groovy, stomachchurning ride that takes off with an immediate drop into darkness. The 95-degree, 85-foot vertical plunge is intense, and several high-speed twists and turns are thrilling. Want to scream some more? Get in line for the massive Thunderhead coaster. This fast and furious ride features a 3,230-foot track that crosses over and under itself 32 times at a top speed of 55 miles per hour. Dollywood’s newest coaster is the Wild Eagle, and it’s the first wing coaster in the country. Riders are seated outside the track, legs dangling, given the sensation of flying. The enormous first drop flying into a loop is jaw-dropping, and the many twists and turns that follow are killer. Hitting a speed of 61 miles per hour, it’s no surprise that the Wild Eagle was given the Gold Ticket Award for “Best New Ride” in 2012 by Amusement Today. Wanna get wet? Head next door to Dollywood’s pristine Splash Country water park. More than 20 aquatic attractions await, including pools, slides and beyond. You’ll definitely want to hop aboard the brand new River Rush — it’s Tennessee’s first water coaster. You’ll soar four stories in the air among the trees and get to experience twists, turns and tunnels all splashtastic! Admission to the water park by itself is $47 adults, $42 ages 4 - 11. If you’re going to make the most of a Dollywood experience, get the three-day pass for both parks: $89 adults, $72 for kids. And if you’re gonna do Dollywood, you’ll easily need three days to enjoy all the fun! — Chad Young

Another great option is the Baby/Child Swap Program, which allows one parent to stand in front of the line with the kids while the other parent rides. When the riding parent gets off, he swaps kid care while the other one rides. There are lots of kiddle rides for your littlest ones. Although the Tweety’s Swings scared our 2-year-old, he absolutely LOVED the Santa Maria — because Dad could sit with him. Our 6-year-old wanted to ride the Log Jamboree over and over again! Bathrooms are sometimes hard to find amidst the hustle and bustle, so be sure to know where they are in the area you’re in for your kids’ sake. Also, load up on sunblock as this park is mostly un-shaded. Buy tickets online before you go — general admission is $39.99 seven days in advance, $42.99 three days in advance and $44.99 for immediate use. — Kiera Ashford

SIDEWALK CHALK PAINT It’s all over the Internet ... painting with chalk! You’ve seen your kid ... rubbing his sidewalk chalk into the holes in the pavement. Eliminate that step by doing this: WHAT YOU NEED Sidewalk Chalk Ziploc Bag Paintbrush

WHAT YOU DO Hammer Bowl Water

1.

Add your pieces of used sidewalk chalk into the Ziploc bag.

2.

With your hammer, crush those pieces into powder as best you can.

3.

Carefully pour the powder into the bowl. Don’t dump it or you’ll be inhaling chalk dust.

4.

Add a little water. You don’t want it pasty, more like a watery paint.

5.

Use your imagination and create with your newly made sidewalk chalk paint!

Meds While Pregnant: Easy Does It

A

bout 90 percent of pregnant women take at least one medication, and 70 percent take at least one prescription drug, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Use of prescription drugs during the first trimester of pregnancy (when fetal organs are forming) has grown by more than 60 percent during the past 30 years. A growing number of pregnant women selfmedicate with over-the-counter drugs that were once sold only by prescription, and while many commonly taken medications are considered safe for unborn babies, the Food and Drug Administration estimates that 10 percent or more of birth defects result from medications taken during pregnancy. So what’s OK to take? Don’t rely on the Internet alone to find out. Siobhan M. Dolan, M.D., co-author of Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby (HarperOne; 2013) from the March of Dimes says the following medications should be avoided during pregnancy:

TO AVOID IN PREGNANCY: • Isotretinoin (Accutane and others for acne) • Valproic acid (for seizure disorders) • Lithium (for bipolar disorder) • Tetracycline (for infections) • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor antagonists (for hypertension) Dolan says many medications that are not recommended during pregnancy can be replaced with low-risk alternatives. If you have any doubt about what you’re taking while pregnant, discuss it with your doctor.

stop

the mom

bullying! By Sandra Gordon

Giving unwanted advice to another mom? You may be unknowingly forcing your parenting style ... which may be a new form of bullying.

L

et’s face it — raising kids involves making countless decisions that can shape you as a parent. Your internal GPS — intuition — can guide you, of course. So can insight from friends, your spouse, your extended family and fellow moms and dads online. But with so much advice swirling around, parenting can sometimes feel like a disco ball. Are you doing the right thing? It depends on whom you ask. And thanks to the anonymity of the Internet, there are plenty of harsh critics lurking out there, waiting to let you know whether you’re on track — or not. Oh, the scrutiny! “Surveys show that 95 percent of moms feel judged by just about everything these days, from working or not working and their choice of infant feeding to their discipline approaches and the sleep methods they use with their kids,” says Michelle Borba, Ed.D., a parenting expert

and author of 22 books, including The Big Book of Parenting Solutions (Jossey-Bass; 2009). Unsolicited feedback or even just dirty looks from other moms in the grocery store can make parenting even more stressful. Borba even goes so far as to call it a form of bullying, which can undermine your parenting confidence and feed into the problem. “When you have less confidence in yourself, you’re more likely to be judgmental of other moms,” Borba says. You might even change your parenting style. According to Borba, one out of three moms makes a different parenting choice because she feels criticized by another mom. A better idea? Remember that there’s no cookie cutter approach to parenting. What works for one child won’t necessarily work for another, even within the same family. To boost your confidence and empower yourself as a parent while you’re figuring out how to tailor your approach, stand up for yourself. Here’s how to handle criticism from know-it-all friends, relatives, coworkers and cyber parents. (please turn the page)

43

stop the mom bullying! Practice Assertiveness

When somebody criticizes you (as in, “I can’t believe you’re still breastfeeding”) stay cool and calm. “Bullies love responses,” Borba says. Resist the urge to insult them with a cutting comeback. Instead, take a deep breath and respond with a simple line, such as, “I hear you,” or “Thank you. I know what works best for my child,” in a firm, strong voice. “Practice your response ahead of time so you can deliver it in the heat of the moment,” Borba says. Use firm body language, too. “Look at the color of the talker’s eyes.” These assertiveness techniques can also come in handy on the playground, so teach them to your kids, too.

Seek Support

As a mom, you need layers of support, including an inner circle of other moms who make you feel valued. “Find truly supportive friends — moms you can confide in who you know won’t take what you tell them any further,” says Sue Hubbard, M.D., a pediatrician and host of The Kid’s Doctor (kidsdr.com). It may take some play date experimenting to find your inner circle. The pay-off? “Moms who receive support are confident, happier and more fulfilled,” Hubbard says. Your inner circle can change over time as you and your kids change, but there’s no better relationship than with other trusted moms in the trenches. That said, the mommysphere on the Internet shouldn’t be your inner circle. Not all discussions need to involve everyone. “There are many decisions you can make on your own or with that inner group of friends,” says Hubbard. If you decide to share something online, however, whether it be a tweet, text, Facebook or blog post, use the front door rule: “If you don’t want to put it on the front door for your own mother to see, don’t push send,” says Hubbard.

Trust Your “Momtuition”

Sometimes, you just know you’re right about a parenting decision, such as deciding not to send your child to summer camp. In those stances, go with it. “Don’t second-guess yourself or go online to get others’ opinions,” Hubbard says. Similarly, if you have a tough parenting decision to make, such as whether to put your child on ADHD medication, get an expert’s advice. Seek out the counsel of your pediatrician.

Stop and Think First

As a mom yourself, it’s impossible not to question other moms’ parenting tactics. Still, resist the urge to inflict your opinion. Instead, stop, think and consider the potential big picture. Recently, for example, Danielle Smith, founder of extraordinarymommy.com, was on an airplane. A woman with a preschool-age boy sat in the row behind her. “The child, who was sitting above the wing, kept telling his mom he couldn’t see. When the mom said, ‘Will you just shut up! Everyone is looking at you,’ I started to judge her,” Smith says. “Then I said to myself, ‘Wait a minute. You have no idea what her day has been like. You don’t know if her child has pushed every single button. You’ve told your children to shut up before.’” Instead of turning around and saying something not so nice, Smith stayed facing forward, which is what seemed to be the most helpful thing to do at the moment since the mom was concerned about attracting attention. Hubbard agrees with Smith’s “stop and think” approach. When you feel the urge to judge others, “Ask yourself, ‘I wonder what happened in that mom’s life to make her feel or act that way?’” Hubbard says. If you decide to intervene, share your ideas in a positive manner, such as, “Would you like to switch seats so your son can see out the window?”

Consider Criticism Just Information

Likewise, if you feel judged, consider the judger’s perspective. U.S. Olympic gold medalist Keri Walsh-Jennings was walking through the infant formula section at Target recently with her third child, 1-month-old daughter, Scout, when she got the stink eye from another mom. “I took a deep breath and said to myself, ‘She has no idea I’m a low-producing woman; that my kids starve when I only feed them breast milk because my milk is too low in fat.’ So I gave the lady a smile and grabbed two boxes of formula,” Walsh-Jennings says. “Knowing why I’m doing what I’m doing empowers me.” Walsh-Jennings also thinks critics serve a purpose. “They make you think, ‘You’re right. I could adjust this,’ or ‘You know what? I’m kicking butt and I’m not changing a thing.’” J Sandra Gordon is an award-winning freelance writer who delivers expert advice and the latest developments in health, nutrition, parenting and consumer issues.

Join Nashville Parent and other moms on Facebook for honest discussions like this: Would you say something to a mom you don’t know if you thought her child could fall out of the store buggy? “It’s better to say something rather than NOT say something and the kid falls and gets hurt! It would not upset me if someone said something to my kid.” Kimberlyn Kellogg-Anteau

“I always get that ‘I can handle it’ feeling (which might stem from protectiveness or embarrassment) but when I think about it, I still value the ‘it takes a community to raise a child’ view. With that being said, I would’ve told the person ‘Thank you.’” Whitney Nicole

“It takes a village to raise a kid, but not a village idiot. If the person was hateful I would take offense. If it was a nice, “Oh my, you could fall sweetie,” then I’d be OK. Lesa Levy Sanchez

Social Media & Kids: A Parent’s Guide By Pam Molnar

Kids keep up with new technologies faster than adults — and they know it. Get past Facebook to keep in touch with your social butterflies.

W 46

hen my daughter turned 13, she asked if she could have a Facebook account. My husband and I felt comfortable with the privacy settings because we used them on our own accounts. We told her that as long as she shared her passwords and “friended” us first, we would allow her to have an account. Within a year, she grew bored with Facebook, complaining that there were too many “old people” using it. She wanted to move on to other social media sites — some I’d never heard of. Today, our daughter’s access to the Internet is no longer limited to a computer plugged into the family room wall. According to a study done by Harvard University in 2013, almost 75 percent of teens have access to the net on their cell phone, iPod or tablet. This access has thrown the flood gates of social media wide open for use by today’s iGeneration. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry reports that more 60 percent of 13- to 17-year-olds have at least one profile on a social networking site. Social media websites are constantly evolving and teens are more in tune with these changes than their parents. Like anything our child is involved in, we want to know everything we can about social networking sites so we can help guide and protect them. Here’s the lowdown on social media sites popular with kids.

More than 60 percent of 13- to 17-year-olds have at least one profile on a social networking site. — The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Instagram

Instagram is a free photo sharing app currently available on iPhone, iPad and iPod. For teens, it is a place to share their team photos, pics of their friends and hundreds of “selfies.” Users can choose from a variety of filters to edit or give their photos fun effects and post them instantly. Although all pictures posted to Instagram default as public, users have the ability to set their account to private. Instagram also allows members to comment or like the pics posted by the friends they follow. By setting their account to private, Instagrammers are prompted when someone wants to follow their posts and they must give permission before anyone can do so.

Snapchat

Snapchat is a mobile app available on Androids and Apple iPhones, iPods and iPads. This app allows users to snap a picture, add captions and send it to friends. Snapchat’s unique feature is that a message or picture can only be viewed by the receiver for one to 10 seconds, as set by the sender, before it is deleted. While this may sound like a way to keep unflattering photos from hanging out in cyberspace forever, this does not stop pics from being captured as a screen shot. Create your base friend list by accessing your cell phone contact list. You may set your preferences to receive messages from “My Friends” only and you may block an individual from your friend list.

Kik Messenger

Kik is an instant messaging service similar to texting. Available on most operating systems, Kik users can send text messages, pics, voice messages and other content to their friends with Kik accounts. Using a WiFi to send messages via Kik allows users to avoid text messaging rates. This app is perfect for teens who don’t have unlimited texting on their plan or for those users with an iPod Touch. Kik users are identified with a user name and not their cell phone

number as a privacy feature. Which means, you don’t have to share your cell phone number to receive messages from someone. In your settings, you can choose to block unwanted senders or “Ignore New People” if your user name gets in the wrong hands.

YouTube

Most of us have viewed a video on YouTube at one time or another. A YouTube member can post videos — how-tos, funny animals, your child’s concert — to be viewed by the general public. With 72 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, that leaves a lot of videos open for your child to view. Thankfully, YouTube has set up safety features to protect its teenage users. When posting videos, you can restrict who views your video by making it private or unlisted. That way, the video can only be seen by those you share the link with. YouTube’s Safety Mode keeps your child from viewing potentially objectionable content. For additional information, YouTube offers a Parent Resource guide that offers tips and advice on how to keep your teen safe.

Vine

Vine is a free mobile app (available on iPhone and iPods) that allows users to record and post six-second videos and share them on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Like many social media sites, you can follow your friends, “like” other videos and search hashtags like #hawkswin. While most social media sites are for users 13 and older, Vine is rated 17 and older. Currently, there are no settings to block inappropriate videos. While most teens are only posting silly videos and following their friends, it’s up to the parents to monitor what their child is doing.

Midnight Movie Summer Sequel Take in a late-night

A

n absolutely magical outing awaits your family this summer and fall with the illuminating exhibit, LIGHT: Bruce Munro at Cheekwood. The British artist’s knack for working with light is stunning, and everyone in your family is sure to be mesmerized by the overall ethereal experience. After stopping at the Visitor’s Center to get your wristbands, let loose and have fun gazing at and exploring the 10 installations across the gardens and inside the Museum of Art. First up in the Robertson Ellis Color Garden is the enormous Water-Towers display. Forty massive towers built from more than 10,000 water-filled plastic bottles adorn the area. Colorful fiber-optic lighting enable them to beautifully glow. Head to the Japanese Garden area where you’ll discover three more installations. Blue Moon is the most stunning installment in this area. The five foot diameter ball gives the illusion of a hovering moon, and kids especially will be captivated by the ever-changing swirls of light coming from within. It’s breathtaking to watch it change from white to icy blue to dark blue then to deep purple before fading back to white. Other standout displays include Field of Light, featuring more than 20,000 glowing glass spheres coming up from the grounds surrounding the Museum of Art, and inside the museum, be sure to check out the impressive Light Shower in the loggia and the smaller-scale pieces inside the gallery. The most outstanding part of the overall exhibit is outside housed in the Mustard Meadow area by the pond. Light Reservation is a construction of fluorescent tubes mounted across the meadow (during the daytime, they look like teepee poles). In rapid-fire order, the tubes flash brightly colored lights in an amazingly choreographed pattern. Take a few moments to relax at one of the benches or picnic tables near the

pond and enjoy!

LIGHT continues through Friday, Nov. 8. The exhibit is open Wed - Fri until 11 p.m. If you go this month, make the most out of it with the kids and go on Thursdays during Family Night Out which includes live children’s entertainment at 6:30 p.m. Admission to LIGHT is $15 adults, $8 ages 3 - 17. Cheekwood is located at 1200 Forrest Park Drive, Nashville. Call 356-8000 or visit cheekwood.org.

Listen to music and see video clips by the “Man in Black” from six decades at the new Johnny Cash Museum.

go country with your kiddos

E

Cash & Carrie: two new experiences sure to blow you away

njoy summer with your kids exploring all the fun things to do around town, and dig in to some country music history, too. The brand new JOHNNY CASH MUSEUM in downtown Nashville offers an amazing and intimate tribute to the “Man in Black.” Cash was the only artist who charted in every format while he was living! Visitors will learn of his humble early life as the son of a cotton farmer in Dyess County, Ark., to his life in the United States Air Force as a morse code intercept operator and his eventual climb to fame in the music industry. An interesting note: his stint in the Air Force actually forced Cash to have an official first name. He chose John. Beforehand, he was only known as J.R. Cash. Kids may enjoy interactive stations via iPad technology allowing them to listen to six decades worth of music clips as well as TV and video segments. Family photos, stage attire and a few home furnishings can be seen. A projection video of his reading of “Ragged Old Flag” from March 1974 is extremely moving, and the nearby Cash Theater boasts classic TV and film footage, including his guest appearance on The Simpsons. Kids unfamiliar with Cash as well as long-time fans will learn a lot no matter their age. The Johnny Cash Museum is located at 119 Third Ave. S., Nashville. It is open daily 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Admission is $14 adults, $10 ages 6 - 15, free ages 5 and younger. Call 256-1777 or visit johnnycashmuseum.com.

See accessories and gear used by Carrie Underwood on her Blown Away Tour during the exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Over at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, check out the new exhibit, CARRIE UNDERWOOD: THE BLOWN AWAY TOUR. Young female fans will love seeing the array of Underwood’s costumes, accessories, microphones (especially the purple one!), props and backstage items, including artwork from her most ardent admirers. Blown Away was a landmark tour for the American Idol superstar, playing 112 dates in 110 cities between 2012 and 2013. The exhibit portrays the path of all four acts of her show — Act 1: Storm Warning; Act 2: Lightning; Act 3: Twister; and Act 4: Blown Away. The exhibit runs through Sunday, Nov. 10. And while you’re there, have fun in the rest of the museum. The Archive Arcade on the third floor lets kids create costumes on touch screen devices, and your littlest ones can grab a coloring sheet at the nearby table and go to town. The Hall is open daily 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., located at 222 Fifth Ave. S., Nashville. Admission is $22 adults, $14 ages 6 - 17, free ages 5 and younger. Call 4162001 or visit countrymusichalloffame.org.
