Read the passage below and choose the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each question. All creatures need to eat something in order to survive. Fortunately, different species of animals have different things that they eat as food. No matter what a creature eats, the food must have enough calories in it to maintain life. Calories, or the energy stored in the food, provide the fuel animals, including humans, need in order to live and move about in the world. Any creature that does not consume enough food, or in other words enough calories, will starve and die.

KÈ M

QU

The term calorie has a scientific meaning. Calorie is a measure of an amount of energy just like pound is a measure of weight. A calorie is officially defined as the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius, which is 1. 8 degrees Fahrenheit. The term "calorie" and "Calorie" with a capital C have two different meanings to scientists. The term Calorie (with a capital C) means one kilocalorie, the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. A kilogram is the same as 1,000 grams and a kilocalorie is 1,000 calories. Food calories are always measured as Calories but average people don't care much about the difference and just use the word calories. Food is composed of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Nutritionists know that a gram of protein contains 4 Calories, a gram of fat has 9 Calories, and a gram of carbohydrate has 4 Calories.

DẠ

Y

All food contain calories. When we eat something it provides energy for our bodies to use when we are active. We even need energy or calories while we are sleeping because, for example, our bodies are still breathing, our heart is pumping, and we continue to digest the food in our stomachs. If a person eats more food and more calories than is used up by activity, the body stores the excess calories in case it might need it later when food might not be available. So a person gains weight due to the extra food and calories. Similarity, if a person consumes fewer calories than are used every day over several weeks and is more active, that person will lose weight. 6. Calorie is a measure of _______ . A. weight B. distance C. energy 7. Animals that do not consume enough calories over a long time _______ . A. can lose weight B. can starve

D. Volume

A. eating more food and calories than they use up B. eating fewer food and calories than they use up C. eating a lot of fat food D. eating a lot of food and calories when they are active 10. All the following statements are true EXCEPT _______ . A. Eating foods that contains lots of fat cause a person to gain weight faster than eating protein B. Read the passage below and choose the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each question. The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon. People of different cultures are more prone to contract certain illnesses because of the characteristic foods they consume. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates and nitrites (commonly used to preserve color in meat) as well as other food additives caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which ingredients on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives that we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to cattle and poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows.

ƠN

Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medicinal purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.

NH

A healthy diet is directly related to good health. Often we are unaware of detrimental substances we ingest. Sometimes well-meaning farmers or others who do not realize the consequences add these substances to food without our knowledge.

Read the passage and decide whether the following statements are True (T) or False (F). The Beatles The Beatles were one of the most influential music groups of the rock era, and many consider them the best musical group on Earth. Initially they affected the post-war baby boom generation of Britain and the u. s. during the 1960s, and later the rest of the world. Certainly they were the most successful group, with global sales exceeding 1.1 billion records. While they were originally famous for light-weight pop music (and the extreme hysterical reaction they received from young women), their later works achieved a combination of popular and critical acclaim perhaps unequaled in the 20th century. Eventually, they became more than recording artists, branching out into film and - particularly in the case of John Lennon - political activism. They achieved an iconic status beyond mere celebrity, with far reaching effects difficult to exaggerate.

The members of the group were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, all from Liverpool, England. Beatlemania began in the UK and exploded following the appearance of the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in the United States, on February 9,1964. The pop-music band became a worldwide phenomenon with worshipful fans, hysterical adulation, and denunciations by culture commentators and others such as Frank Sinatra. Some of this was confusion over the sources of their music (a similar confusion was evinced in 1956 over Elvis Presley by commentators who were unaware of the tradition of blues, R&B and gospel out of which Presley emerged), and some of it was simply an incredulous reaction to the length of their hair. At any rate, it was regarded by the band members with both awe and resentment. 6. They were the best selling group in history. 7. All the members were from Liverpool. 8. They appeared on TV on February 9,1964. 9. There was some confusion about the sources of their music.

10. Their music was copied by Elvis Presley.

Most people have heard of Albert Einstein, but a person who became a friend of his may be less wellknown, but she is also a famous scientist. Her name is Marie Curie, who is most known for her work in radiation. She was born in Warsaw, Poland on November 7,1867 where she grew up with her parents and four other children in the family. Marie was also the youngest child. Because both her parents were teachers, Marie learned how to read and write at a very young age. She was intelligent, had an outstanding memory, and worked very hard in school As Marie grew older there were tough times for her and the family, but she was able to attend a university after graduating from high school, even though it was not something women did during those times. However, she attended a famous university in Paris, France called the Sorbonne where women were permitted to attend. After just three years at the school she earned a degree in Physics. She loved to learn and had always known she wanted to be a scientist. In 1894, she married Pierre Curie, also a scientist, and a year later they had their first child, a daughter named Irene. Marriage and motherhood did not stop Marie from her work and research as a scientist. She became interested in x-rays which had been recently discovered. Marie decided to do some experiments with the element uranium, which is given off by the rays. Her husband, Pierre, joined Marie in her experiments. One day she was examining a material called pitchblende and had expected just a few rays to be given off. Instead, there were many extra rays and Marie realized there must have been an undiscovered element in pitchblende. She and her husband spent many more hours in the lab doing investigations with the new element. They ended up discovering there were two new elements which they discovered, adding them to the periodic table. Maria named one of the elements polonium after her home country, Poland, and the other she named it radium because it gave off so many strong rays. Marie and Pierre Curie came up with the new term 'radioactivity' too, as well to describe elements that emit strong rays. In 1903, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to both scientists for their work in radiation, and Marie was also the first woman in history to be awarded the Nobel Prize. She did not stop there though, because in 1911, Marie won another Nobel Prize, this time in chemistry, for discovering the two elements, polonium and radium. Not only was she the first woman, but also the first person ever to be awarded two Nobel Prizes. This made her very famous and scientists all over the world wanted to study radioactivity with Marie. Later, doctors found that radiology could help cure cancer. Unfortunately, Marie Curie died in 1934 due to overexposure to radiation from the experiments and from the work she did with x-ray machines. Currently, there are many safety precautions that are used preventing scientists from being overexposed to radiation. In summary, Marie Curie is a famous physicist known for her work with radiation, and also as the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize and to win two Nobel Prizes in her lifetime. 28. Thomas Alva Edison was probably the greatest inventor who ever lived, though at school he never did really well. In fact, he went to the bottom of his class and stayed at the bottom for three months. Shortly after, at the age of 12, he left school and never went back! His first job was selling newspapers on trains, and later, at the age of 16, he got a job working in a telegraph office. Not all of Edison's inventions were successful. In fact, his first one was a failure. Many that followed, however, were spectacular successes and Edison became famous. Most people regard him as a genius. Edison worked hard all his life, often working all night in his laboratory, and would not come home for days at a time. When asked what makes a genius he said, "Genius is 99% perspiration and 1 % inspiration." Edison married his first wife, Mary Stilwell, when he was 24. She was only 16 at the time. The story goes that he tapped out his proposal to her in Morse code on a gas-pipe: "Will you marry me?" "I will" came the reply, also in Morse code. Mary died when Edison was 37 years old and two years later he married his second wife, Mina Miller. Although most of the inventions which made Edison famous were made in the first half of his life, Edison continued to work and invent till he was over 70, often working 16 hours a day! During his long and productive life Edison made 1,300 inventions. Edison died on October 18,1931, at the age of 84. America and the world mourned his passing. 28. Edison sometimes worked longer than 12 hours a day. 29. Edison knew Morse code, but Mary Stilwell didn't. 30. Edison returned to his old school after becoming famous. 31. Mina Miller became Edison's wife 2 years after Mary died. 32. Edison made his greatest inventions before he was 42.

Air pollution has an influence on the Earth's atmosphere. The atmosphere of the Earth is like a blanket of air which protects all life. Without the atmosphere, life would not exist. The atmosphere protects living organisms from the heat of the Sun during the day, and at night it prevents the warm air from escaping. Basically, the atmosphere helps keep the living things on Earth from burning up or freezing. The pollution in the air, though, may affect this 'blanket' and becomes harmful to life on Earth. The substances in the air causing the dirty air are called pollutants. Some examples of pollutants may include gases called carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, hydrocarbons, and others. There may also be sand, dust particles, and other substances that evaporate and become pollutants. A primary pollutant is one that is directly released into the air causing pollution. An example is carbon monoxide, which comes from cars and trucks on the road. A second primary pollutant is sulfur dioxide, which comes from the burning of coal. A secondary pollutant is a substance or substances mix together in the air due to a chemical reaction. When these substances mix together, the air pollution is much more dangerous and harmful to organisms. An example is photochemical smog. It is difficult to avoid air pollution since it is the place where people get the oxygen to breathe and live. Pollution can travel with the wind from one place to another and spread over a large number of miles. There are several effects of air pollution including acid rain, which is when rain is mixed with the pollution in the air. This acid rain can cause harm to trees, animals, fish, and other living organisms. It can cause problems with breathing and irritation to the eyes, nose, or throat. Sometimes people can also get headaches or have allergic reactions. Long-term effects can include lung cancer, heart disease and other health problems. 26. Although there is a great deal of variation within each gender, on the average, men and women discuss a surprisingly different range of topics. According to some studies, women and men ranging in age from seventeen to eighty described the range of topics each discussed with friends of the same sex. Certain topics were common to both men and women; work, movies, and television proved to be frequent topics for both groups. The differences between men and women were more striking than the similarities. Female friends spent much more time discussing personal and domestic subjects, relationship problems, family, health and reproductive matters, weight, food and clothing. Men, on the other hand, were more likely to discuss music, current events, sports and business. Women were more likely to gossip about close friends and family. By contrast, men spent more time gossiping about sports figures and media personalities. These differences can lead to frustration when men and women try to converse with one another. 6. Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock, is the way our brain and our personality reacts to the strange new things we encounter when we move from one culture to another. If our culture involves bowing when we greet someone, we may feel very uncomfortable in a culture that does not involve bowing. If the language we use when talking to someone in our own culture is influenced by levels of formality based on the other person's age and status, it may be difficult for us to feel comfortable communicating with people in the new culture. Culture begins with the "honeymoon stage". This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from "jet lag" but we are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food. This honeymoon stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are involved in some kind of great adventure. Unfortunately, the second stage of culture shock can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life, working or studying, buying groceries, doing laundry, or living with a home-stay family, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, girlfriend/boyfriend, pets. All the little problems that everybody in life has seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This period of cultural adjustment can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival rejecting or pulling away from the new culture. This "rejection stage" can be quite dangerous because the visitor may develop unhealthy habits (smoking and drinking too much, being too concerned over food or contact with people from the new culture). This can, unfortunately lead to the person getting sick or developing skin infections or rashes which then makes the person feel even more scared andconfused and helpless. This stage is considered a crisis in the process of cultural adjustment and many people choose to go back to their homeland or spend all their time with people from their own culture speaking their native language. The third stage of culture shock is called the "adjustment stage". This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humour usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor! The fourth stage can be called "at ease at last". Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them. If you meet someone from your country who has just arrived, you can be the expert on life in the new culture and help them to deal with their culture shock. (From: http://gzyy. cooco. net. cn) 6. When does culture shock happen? A. when you reach your teens B. when you move to a big city C. when you meet foreign people for the first time D. when you go to live in a foreign culture 7. How do you feel during the first stage of culture shock? A. lonely and depressed B. bored and homesick C. happy and excited D. angry and frustrated 8. How do you feel during the second stage? A. homesick and afraid B. interested and amused C. stressed, but positive D. you have no particular feelings 9. How could the third stage be described?

Part 1 Listening Listen and fill in the gap with a suitable word. Good morning class. Today I'd like to talk about culture shock. Now, many students think they know what culture shock is, but often they are (1) ________ by the real meaning of the term "culture shock". For example, I've heard students say, "I know what culture shock is. Culture shock is a kind of (2) ______ that you get when you travel. You might be surprised by something such as cars with their lights on during the daytime. You might notice that Canadians take off their shoes in their houses or that they usually eat sandwiches for lunch." Well, those aren't really examples of "culture shock". They are what I like to call "cross-cultural surprises". Actually, culture shock is quite different from a "cross-cultural surprise". Culture shock is the feeling of anxiousness and confusion caused when a person tries to (3) ________ to a new environment. Culture shock also involves a physical and psychological reaction to a new environment. When you live in a new country, it is common to feel sad, (4) ________ , or disoriented. You might feel very tired or you might have difficulty sleeping. You may have sore muscles and you might even lose your identity and wonder "who am I". All of these types of reactions can be (5) ________ that you are suffering from "culture shock".

Read the passage below and choose the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each question. These days, most people in Britain and the US do not wear very formal clothes. But sometimes it is important to wear the right things. Many British people don't think about clothes very much. They just like to be comfortable. When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost anything. At theatres, cinemas and concerts you can put on what you like from beautiful suits and dresses to jeans and sweaters. Anything goes, as long as you look clean and tidy. But in Britain, as well as the US, men in office usually wear suits and ties, and women wear dresses or skirts (not trousers). Doctors and business people always wear quite formal clothes. And in some hotels and restaurants men have to wear ties and women tidy dresses. In any ways, Americans are less formal than British people, but they are more careful with their clothes. At home, or on holiday, most Americans wear informal or sporty clothes. But when they go out in the evening, they like to look nice. In good hotels and restaurants, men have to wear jackets and ties, and women wear pretty clothes. It is difficult to say exactly what people wear in Britain and the US, because everyone is different. If you are not sure what to wear, watch what other people do and follow suit. You'll feel more comfortable if you don't look too different from others. 6. People in Britain wear informal clothes when they ________ . The ozone layer depletion is harmful to the environment. The ozone layer or ozone shield is a region of Earth's stratosphere that absorbs most of the Sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson. The ozone layer contains high concentrations of ozone in relation to other parts of the atmosphere. A depletion of the ozone layer has been noticed since the late 1970s. In atmospheric regions over Antarctica, the ozone layer has become significantly thin, especially in spring season causing the formation of what is called 'ozone hole'. The main cause of ozone depletion and the ozone hole is man- made chemicals such as the chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs). As a consequence of the deterioration of the ozone layer, large amounts of ultraviolet B rays reach the Earth, which can cause skin cancer and cataracts in humans and harm animals as well. The harmful consequences of ozone deterioration paved the way to the adoption of the Montreal Protocol in 1987. This protocol bans the production of CFCs and other ozone-depleting chemicals. The ban came into effect in 1989 and since then it has had positive effects on the environment. Ozone levels stabilized by the mid-1990s and began to recover in the 2000s. Recovery is projected to continue over the next century, and the ozone hole is expected to reach pre-1980 levels by around 2075. The Montreal Protocol is considered the most successful international environmental agreement to date. (Extracted from Wikipedia)

Part 4 Reading Read the passage below and choose the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each question. The environment has been polluted in many different ways. The three major ways are water, land and air pollution. Water pollution is the contamination of lakes, caused by human activities. It can be harmful to organisms and plants which live in the water. Water pollution occurs when wastes are discharged from waste water treatment plants. Other known causes are factory wastes or leaking underground tanks. These can be chemical substances that are toxic. The polluted water can cause cholera and typhoid fever. Water pollution has led to the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily. Land pollution is the destruction of the earth's land surfaces. It is often caused by human activities such as careless disposal of wastes, over-mining of minerals and wrong use of land for planting. All these will affect our health in the long run. They will lead to all kinds of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and breathing problems. Land pollution also brings about natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides. Air pollution is also the result of human activity where chemicals and other dangerous materials are released into the air. This happens through the release of carbon monoxide gas from exhaust pipes of motor vehicles. Other gases such as sulphur oxides are released from the burning of coal and oil. High air pollution levels can cause damage to the environment. It also brings discomfort to humans and other living organisms. In the long term, air pollution can cause serious breathing problems, lung cancer and heart disease. (https://shimizusensei89.wordpress.com) 1. The first Earth Day was held in the USA. It was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in - a sort of general educational forum or seminar. That was on April 22,1970. While this first Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues. In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22 International Mother Earth Day.
