Endangered species are plant and animal species which are in danger of extinction. Over 8,300 plant species and 7,200 animal species around the globe are threatened with extinction, and many thousands more become extinct each year before biologists can identify them.

The primary causes of species extinction are habitat destruction, commercial exploitation and pollution. The drainage of wetlands, cutting of forests, urbanization and road and dam construction have destroyed or seriously damaged natural habitats. Since the 1600s, worldwide commercial exploitation of animals for food and other products has seriously reduced the number of rare species. Toxic chemicals inthe air and land, contaminated water and increased water temperatures have also driven many species to the verge of extinction.

Plant and animal extinction leads to a loss of biodiversity. Maintaining biodiversity is important for us in many ways. For example, humans depend on species diversity to have food, clean air and water, and fertile soil for agriculture. In addition, we benefit greatly from the many medicines and other products that biodiversity provides.

Different conservation efforts have been made in order to save endangered species. The Red List -a global list of endangered and vulnerable animal species -has been introduced to raise people's awareness of conservation needs. Governments have enacted laws to protect wildlife from commercial trade and overhunting. A number of wildlife habitat reserves have been established so that a wide range of endangered species can have a chance to survive and develop.

both local mass extinction and populationcrashes. This is a cause for concern as many scientists believe that humans areresponsible.

Since the 1980s, scientists have noticed a decline in amphibian populations.Although many animals are affected by humans, amphibians have been hitparticularly hard. Some scientists believe this is because of their two-stage lifecycle. Unlike mostanimals, amphibians live their lives in two distinct stages. Thefirst is aquatic and the second is terrestrial. This means amphibians are sensitive to environmental changes in the water and on land. They also have permeableskin, which means that toxins and chemicals can easily get into their bodies.

At first, some scientists did not believe that human pollution was the causefor changes in amphibian populations. These scientists believed that everyspecies on Earth goes through natural cycles and changesand that there wasnot enough long-term data to prove that humans were the problem. In recentyears, this has changed. Almost all biologists are concerned about the decline in amphibian populations. They are worried not only because many amphibiansmay goextinct, but also because these extinctions will affect other plants andanimals inecosystems. They believe that the decline in amphibian populations is awarning to humans to stop polluting and clean up Earth.

Part 4:Reading

Read the passage and decide if the following sentences are True or False. WriteT for True, F for False.

According to Dr Nick Hawes, the future of robots is going to be huge. Here heexplains the challenges.

DẠYKÈMQUYNHƠN OFFICIAL

'There’s this huge excitement around robots,'says Dr Nick Hawes, SeniorLecturer in Intelligent Robotics, School of Computer Science, University ofBirmingham. 'Everyone really believes, as we do ourselves, that robots are goingto have a huge impact on our future -in workplaces, in roles in various industries.'But there is one problem that motivated Dr Hawes and the group at Birmingham intheir research. 'The fact that these robots would only function for two

hours, andonly do one useful thing once, made us think that we are not getting close to doingthe science thatwill allow robots to have this huge impact.'

The result of this was 'Bob' the robot, which received much media attention as'Bob' was shown working as a security guard, patrolling the offices of a securitycompany. 'Bob' was designed as part of a researchgroup called STRANDS, and ismade up of seven universities across Europe. 'The STRANDS project has focusedon what we can do to make a robot function for more than an hour or two -fordays, weeks and months,' says Dr Hawes. There are two interesting things aboutthis, he says.

Controlled environment

Firstly, there's the science and engineering challenge of making an'autonomous robot, a robot that can do things for itself, function for that lengthof time in an environment it has no control over. Normallywhen you put robotsinto places you have to control everything,to tie things down, make sure nobodygets in the robot's way. You want to be able to make a robot cope in a real human environment.'

Secondly, there are real advantages when a robot can function for an extendedperiod of time. 'The robot can start to learn things about this environment thatit wouldn't ever see normally,'says Dr Hawes. 'It gets to see daily routines andpatterns: what time people come and go; where you put your mug of tea on yourdesk every day; things that humans have a common-sense understanding of, butrobots don’t. Our aim is for robots to learn that over time.'

From driverless cars to washing machines

But do we have a fixed image of robots and have certain expectations ofwhat they look like and how they operate? Is our image of robots too human-like,and is that a negative factor? 'Ithink that is the way science fiction has shownthem to date,' says Dr Hawes. Tm not really interested in robots that look likehumans. There are some advantages to having human-like features, humans naturally understand other humans from their physical movement. Having arobotwith some human-like physical movement -with eyes looking at places, positioningyour body to look. Humans understand that as having some meaning, and justgenerally it makes them feel more comfortable about other robots.’

He points out that our environment, from door handles to cupboards, iscreatedfor humans so having a human-type robot is easier to fit in. 'But at thesame time,' he argues, 'robots are really tools, a technology. Their form should bedictated by their function. A driverless car is a driverless car and that's a robot. To some a washing machine is a robot. There are many autonomous intelligentmachinesthat can do things on their own. Some of them may end up looking likehumans but most of them won't.'

The next step with Bob is extending the amount of time he can function. OtherSTRANDS partners are working in the area of 'care', in a hospital in Viennawherea robot is doing some work. 'There is going to be a big industry building andprogramming robots so we think our students need to be looking at that,' saysDr Hawes. So at the university they 'teach robotics; we have a Robot Club wherestudents workon Bob and similar robots. We are really trying to get everyone, from18 upwards, working on this technology because it is going tobe huge.'

1. People think that robots are going to have a big effect on some areas of our lives in the future.

DẠYKÈMQUYNHƠN OFFICIAL

2. According to Dr Hawes, robots were limited because they

could not work for a long period of time.

3. There was little interest from newspapers and TV when Bob the robot started working.

4. A robot normally has no problems functioning in a place where human beings live and work.

5. If a robot can function for a longer period of time, it can learn new things it didn't understand before.

6. Dr Hawes says that the majority of robots in the future will look like human beings.

7. The next thing that needs to be done with Bob the robot is to make him able to work for a longer period of time.

8. Dr Hawes thinks that only asmall team of experts should work on this technology.

III. Read the passage and choose the best answer to each of the following sentences.

Tornadoes form when strong winds spin. Wind is invisible, but we can see tornadoes because the spinning wind picks up water, dust and debris. The spinning wind forms a funnel that connects thunderstorm clouds with the ground.

When a tornado is close, watch out. They can spin over 200 miles per hour and cause a lot of damage. As they move across the land, they can easily pick up cars, trucks, and even houses, and then throw them very far. It is important to find a safe place to take shelter if a tornado gets close.

A safe place could be a basement or the lowest floor, depending on where you are. If you are in ahome without a basement, try to find a first floor closet or bathroom without windows in the middleof your house. You should curlupinto a ball and cover your head and neck with your hands. Stay ina safe place until the tornado passes.

But there are some people who actually want to get close to tornadoes. They are scientists who wants to learn more about tornadoes. One of the bestways to do this is to get as close as possibleto these twisters. They use special equipment and instruments to measure what is happening in and around a tornado.

DẠYKÈMQUYNHƠN OFFICIAL

One special instrument these scientists use is called a tornado probe. It is aboutsix inches tall and looks like a short, orange construction cone. Inside the tornado probe, there are sensors to measure wind speed, temperature, pressure, and direction. Some probes even have cameras, so the scientists can see and understand what it’s like to be in atornado.

To be able to get these measurements, the scientists have to get a tornado probe near or intoa tornado. Scientists will try to guess where a tornado will go next. Then they drive to that location and put down their probe. If they donot guesscorrectly, they pick up their probe and try another spot. If they are right, the tornado will go near or even right over the probe. Then they take all of the measurement from the probe and use them to predict where future tornadoes may form and travel.

8. What sequence of events is described in the passage?

A. The steps scientists take to get the measurements from tornadoes probe.

B. The steps involved in the formation of a tornado.

C. The steps that people take to build tornado probes.

D. The steps people should take if their house is destroyed by a tornado.

There are already some changes happening because of global warming. Sealevel is rising and some animals are moving to new homes because their naturalhabitat is disappearing. If the warming gets worse, as scientists expect, there maybe some kinds of plants and animals that become extinct. There may be morestorms and floods. Due to melting ice caps, sea levels may rise so much thatpeople have to move away from the coasts. Some areas may become too dry for farming. All humans contribute toglobal warming by burning fossil fuels whenthey drive a car,fly in an airplane, and heat or cool their houses.

DẠYKÈMQUYNHƠN OFFICIAL

Tropical rainforests are being destroyed and badly degraded at anunsustainable rate. Some scientists estimate that in the early 1990s tropicalforests were being destroyed at a rate of approximately 28 hectares a minute,or about 14million hectares each year -an area about the size of the state ofWisconsin. This figure marked a decrease since the 1980s, when approximately16

million hectares were destroyed each year, largely due to a reported decline ofdeforestation in the Amazon River Basin in the early 1990s. However, satelliteimages indicate that rates may have rebounded in the late 1990s as burning inthe Amazon increased again. Over the past three decades alone, about 5 millionsquare kilometers -or 20 percent of the world's tropical forests -have been cleared. During this time, deforestation in tropical Asia reached almost 30percent. High rates of deforestation are inevitably followed by alarming ratesof plant and animal extinction because many rainforest species cannot surviveoutside their pristine rainforest habitat. Some scientists estimate that dozens ofrainforest species are becoming extinct every day.

Causes of deforestation vary from location to location, but certain patternstend to be consistent across all forests. Logging companies in search of valuablerainforest hardwoods, or, less often, oil companies in search of petroleum, areoften the first to enter a remote area of rainforest. Some logged forests, if leftalone, can regenerate in a few decades. But typically, they are not left alonetheroads built by logging companies often provide access for landless farmers toenter a new area, as well as a means to transport agricultural crops to market. For every 1 kilometer of new roads built through a forested area, 4 to 24 squarekilometers are deforested and colonized.

Once the loggers leave the land, a typical cycle of destruction ensues. Whenthe landless farmers arrive, they clear the land for planting. Poor rainforest soilsproduce a low crop yield, especially after a couple of years. At that point, thefarmers often sell their lands to cattle ranchers or large plantation owners. After nutrients have been exhausted and soils compacted by cattle, lands arethen abandoned and oftenlaid to waste. Rainforest does not readily regenerateon these lands without human intervention. Meanwhile, the colonist farmers andcattle ranchers move to a new piece of land made accessible by logging roads, where the cycle of deforestation begins again.

Do you think education is better now than it was in your grandparents’ time? Many older people in the UK believe the opposite. "Schools were better in our day,"they complain. "There isn't enough discipline these days. Kids don't work as hardas we did, either. The syllabus isn’t as challenging, so clever students aren’t beingstretched enough. They need to study things in greater depth. Exams are much, much easier now as well."

Were schools better years ago? Some British teenagers travelled back in timeto a 1950s boarding school. They got a big surprise! The first shock came whentheteenagers met their new teachers. Dressed in traditional black gowns, theylook so frosty and uncaring! They were really authoritarian, too, so anyone caughtbreaking the rules -talking in classes, mucking about in the playground or playingtruant -was in big trouble! Punishments included writing 'lines’ or staying afterclass to do detention. The naughtiest kids were expelled.

Things were just as bad after class. At meal times the students had to endurea diet of plain, nononsense, healthy food. Homework was obligatory and it tookages!Copying essays off the Internet wasn't an option, as personal computersdidn't exist in the 1950s!

At the end of 'term' everyone sat 1950s-style exams. The old exams weremuch longer than their twenty-first century equivalents and involved learninghuge amounts of facts by heart. History papers were all dates and battles. Mathspapers were trickier, too; calculators weren't around in the 1950s, so the studentshad to memorise multiplication tables and master long division. Our candidatesfound this really difficult.

The exam results surprised a lot of people. Students predicted to do well intheir real-life, twenty-first century exams often got low grades in the 1950s exams.Does this prove modern exams are too easy? Do twenty-first century kids rely toomuch on modern technology, like calculators and computers?

The TV series of That'll teach 'em! focused on a 1960s vocational school. UKschool-kids study a range of academic subjects these days. But in the 1960s,children judged to be less 'able' went to vocational schools. These helped themlearn job skills. Boys studied subjects like metalwork, woodwork or gardening. Insome classes, they even learned how to milk goats! The girls' timetables includedsecretarial skills. They also learned to cook, clean and sew -probably not muchfun for most girls.
