Endangered species are plant and animal species which are in danger of extinction. Over 8,300 plant species and 7,200 animal species around the globe are threatened with extinction, and many thousands more become extinct each year before biologists can identify them.
The primary causes of species extinction are habitat destruction, commercial exploitation and pollution. The drainage of wetlands, cutting of forests, urbanization and road and dam construction have destroyed or seriously damaged natural habitats. Since the 1600s, worldwide commercial exploitation of animals for food and other products has seriously reduced the number of rare species. Toxic chemicals inthe air and land, contaminated water and increased water temperatures have also driven many species to the verge of extinction.
Plant and animal extinction leads to a loss of biodiversity. Maintaining biodiversity is important for us in many ways. For example, humans depend on species diversity to have food, clean air and water, and fertile soil for agriculture. In addition, we benefit greatly from the many medicines and other products that biodiversity provides.
Different conservation efforts have been made in order to save endangered species. The Red List -a global list of endangered and vulnerable animal species -has been introduced to raise people's awareness of conservation needs. Governments have enacted laws to protect wildlife from commercial trade and overhunting. A number of wildlife habitat reserves have been established so that a wide range of endangered species can have a chance to survive and develop.

both local mass extinction and populationcrashes. This is a cause for concern as many scientists believe that humans areresponsible.
Since the 1980s, scientists have noticed a decline in amphibian populations.Although many animals are affected by humans, amphibians have been hitparticularly hard. Some scientists believe this is because of their two-stage lifecycle. Unlike mostanimals, amphibians live their lives in two distinct stages. Thefirst is aquatic and the second is terrestrial. This means amphibians are sensitive to environmental changes in the water and on land. They also have permeableskin, which means that toxins and chemicals can easily get into their bodies.
At first, some scientists did not believe that human pollution was the causefor changes in amphibian populations. These scientists believed that everyspecies on Earth goes through natural cycles and changesand that there wasnot enough long-term data to prove that humans were the problem. In recentyears, this has changed. Almost all biologists are concerned about the decline in amphibian populations. They are worried not only because many amphibiansmay goextinct, but also because these extinctions will affect other plants andanimals inecosystems. They believe that the decline in amphibian populations is awarning to humans to stop polluting and clean up Earth.

Read the passage and decide if the following sentences are True or False. WriteT for True, F for False.
According to Dr Nick Hawes, the future of robots is going to be huge. Here heexplains the challenges.
DẠYKÈMQUYNHƠN OFFICIAL
'There’s this huge excitement around robots,'says Dr Nick Hawes, SeniorLecturer in Intelligent Robotics, School of Computer Science, University ofBirmingham. 'Everyone really believes, as we do ourselves, that robots are goingto have a huge impact on our future -in workplaces, in roles in various industries.'But there is one problem that motivated Dr Hawes and the group at Birmingham intheir research. 'The fact that these robots would only function for two
hours, andonly do one useful thing once, made us think that we are not getting close to doingthe science thatwill allow robots to have this huge impact.'
The result of this was 'Bob' the robot, which received much media attention as'Bob' was shown working as a security guard, patrolling the offices of a securitycompany. 'Bob' was designed as part of a researchgroup called STRANDS, and ismade up of seven universities across Europe. 'The STRANDS project has focusedon what we can do to make a robot function for more than an hour or two -fordays, weeks and months,' says Dr Hawes. There are two interesting things aboutthis, he says.
Controlled environment
Firstly, there's the science and engineering challenge of making an'autonomous robot, a robot that can do things for itself, function for that lengthof time in an environment it has no control over. Normallywhen you put robotsinto places you have to control everything,to tie things down, make sure nobodygets in the robot's way. You want to be able to make a robot cope in a real human environment.'
Secondly, there are real advantages when a robot can function for an extendedperiod of time. 'The robot can start to learn things about this environment thatit wouldn't ever see normally,'says Dr Hawes. 'It gets to see daily routines andpatterns: what time people come and go; where you put your mug of tea on yourdesk every day; things that humans have a common-sense understanding of, butrobots don’t. Our aim is for robots to learn that over time.'
From driverless cars to washing machines
But do we have a fixed image of robots and have certain expectations ofwhat they look like and how they operate? Is our image of robots too human-like,and is that a negative factor? 'Ithink that is the way science fiction has shownthem to date,' says Dr Hawes. Tm not really interested in robots that look likehumans. There are some advantages to having human-like features, humans naturally understand other humans from their physical movement. Having arobotwith some human-like physical movement -with eyes looking at places, positioningyour body to look. Humans understand that as having some meaning, and justgenerally it makes them feel more comfortable about other robots.’
He points out that our environment, from door handles to cupboards, iscreatedfor humans so having a human-type robot is easier to fit in. 'But at thesame time,' he argues, 'robots are really tools, a technology. Their form should bedictated by their function. A driverless car is a driverless car and that's a robot. To some a washing machine is a robot. There are many autonomous intelligentmachinesthat can do things on their own. Some of them may end up looking likehumans but most of them won't.'
The next step with Bob is extending the amount of time he can function. OtherSTRANDS partners are working in the area of 'care', in a hospital in Viennawherea robot is doing some work. 'There is going to be a big industry building andprogramming robots so we think our students need to be looking at that,' saysDr Hawes. So at the university they 'teach robotics; we have a Robot Club wherestudents workon Bob and similar robots. We are really trying to get everyone, from18 upwards, working on this technology because it is going tobe huge.'
1. People think that robots are going to have a big effect on some areas of our lives in the future.
DẠYKÈMQUYNHƠN OFFICIAL
2. According to Dr Hawes, robots were limited because they
could not work for a long period of time.
3. There was little interest from newspapers and TV when Bob the robot started working.
4. A robot normally has no problems functioning in a place where human beings live and work.
5. If a robot can function for a longer period of time, it can learn new things it didn't understand before.
6. Dr Hawes says that the majority of robots in the future will look like human beings.
7. The next thing that needs to be done with Bob the robot is to make him able to work for a longer period of time.
8. Dr Hawes thinks that only asmall team of experts should work on this technology.

Read the passage and choose the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correctanswer to each question.
There are no more dinosaurs living on the Earth. They are extinct, which meansthere is no longer a certain kind of plantor animal living anywhere in the world.A species is a certain group of living organisms, like dinosaurs, humans, birds, andmany others. Scientists believe many organisms, along with the dinosaurs, diedout when a large asteroid collided with the Earth. The collision caused a massextinction, which occurs at a faster rate over a very short time-period.
There are usually two reasons for the extinction of animals and other livingthings. The first is naturally, which may take place when animals do not adapttonatural changes in their environment. For example, if the habitat of a bird suddenlychanges, and if the bird does not adapt, it could become extinct.
Examples of naturally occurring extinction may take place during a changeinthe climate. This took place during the Ice Age when the temperature of the Earthwas much lower. During a natural extinction, the species may be eliminated by newpredators that move into their environment. The food needed to survive may nolonger be available.
Another example of this type of extinction was the wooly mammoth, a relativeof the elephant, which died out 10,000 years ago due to climate change and thedisappearance of its habitat.
The second reason for the extinction of animals is human interaction, which includes hunting and habitat destruction caused by people. An animal'senvironment may be destroyed by pollution or construction, such as the destructionof parts of a rainforest. Humans also overhunt sometimes wiping out an entirespecies. In addition, the moving of non-native species into an area where they arenot usually found may lead to the extinction of another species.
Examples include the Dodo bird that became extinct due to overhunting andother animals moving into its environment. The passenger pigeon died out due tothe destruction of its habitat, as well as overhunting. There are many animals thathave become extinct, but when animals are in danger of becoming extinct, yet stillsurvive, they are called endangered animals.
Endangered means a plant or animal is at risk of becoming extinct. Thisoccurs when the population of a certain animal is so low that they are in dangerof dying out forever and becoming extinct. The reasons for an animal to becomeendangered are mostly the same as for those that have become extinct. There aremany animals in the world today that are on the endangered species list. Some areso in danger of becoming extinct, they can only be found in a zoo.
DẠYKÈMQUYNHƠN OFFICIAL

The orangutan found in the countryof Malaysia is a highly intelligent relative of the ape family, but it too has beenendangered due to the loss of their habitat and overhunting. The best place to have aninternship position is an organization that gives you an opportunity to gain realwork experience and develop your skills instead of using you as a cheap worker.
Another thing that should be considered is thesize of the company.Sometimes bigger and more established organizations are better as they have aclear hierarchy and therefore it gives you a clear idea of your position and the jobdescription and most importantly, it will be easier to get a mentor. Startups withonly five employees are usually more flexible in terms of job responsibilities andtherefore it makes it harder to define your position and get mentors.
After you choose a company, do a little research on the company includingthe people who work there. You can do a Google search and comb social mediasuch as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to dig deep about the company’s hiringmanagers and what they expect from a new employee.
Social media is also very useful to keep in touch with asmany people as youcan and build your network. Do not hesitate to maintain any personal connectionyou have because those connections could be the first ones who inform you abouta new job opening or any vacant positions you can apply for.
If you aim for a dream job, do not overlook an entry-level position just becauseit offers mediocre salary. Entry-level employees are more likely to be given roomto grow and learn from their mistakes. They will also be able to figure out the jobroutines and get used tothem when they actually get the position they have beendreaming about.
As your first few jobs might be very demanding yet less rewarding, rememberto have fun and enjoy your life. Working overtime may not always be a good ideato accelerate your career, especially if you have to be more stressed than yourseniors who earn bigger salaries. Setting the time for exercise and social life willmake your life more balanced and stress free.

Part 4: Reading

Zoos are hugely popular attractions for adults and children alike. But are theyactually a good thing?
Critics of zoos would argue that animals often suffer physically and mentallyby being enclosed. Even the best artificial environments can’t come close tomatching the space, diversity, and freedom that animals have in theirnaturalhabitats. This deprivation causes many zoo animals to become stressed ormentally ill. Capturing animalsin the wild also causes much suffering by splittingup families. Some zoos make animals behave unnaturally: for example, marineparks often force dolphins and whales to perform tricks. These mammals maydie decades earlier than their wild relatives, and some even try to commit suicide.
On the other hand, by bringing people and animals together, zooshave thepotential to educate the public aboutconservation issues and inspire people toprotect animals and their habitats. Some zoos provide a safe environment foranimals which have been mistreated in circuses, or pets which have beenabandoned. Zoos also carry out important research into subjects like animalbehaviour and how to treat illnesses.
One of the most important modern functions of zoos is supporting internationalbreeding programmes, particularly for endangered species. In the wild, some ofthe rarest species have difficulty in finding mates and breeding, and they mightalso be threatened by poachers, loss of their habitat and predators. A good zoowill enable these species to live and breed in a secure environment. In addition, asnumbers of some wild species drop, there is an increased danger of populationsbecoming too genetically similar. Breeding programmes provide a safeguard:zoo-bred animals can be released into the wild to increase genetic diversity.
However, opponents of zoos say thatthe vast majority of captive breedingprogrammes do not release animals back into the wild. Surplus animals are soldnot only to other zoos but also to circuses or hunting ranches in the US or SouthAfrica, where some people are willing to pay a lot of money for the chance to killan animal in a fenced enclosure. Often, these animals are familiar with humansand have very little chance of escaping.
So, are zoos good for animals or not? Perhaps it all depends on how wellindividual zoos are managed, and thebenefits of zoos can surely outweightheir harmful effects. However, it is understandable that many people believeimprisoning animals for any reason is simplywrong.
