A Love Story By Na t a l ie Dow l i n g

Under moonlit draped skies, and slightly under the influence of rum, Kieran and Sue Prendergast made it “official”. They were going out. So began a love affair that has been spinning like blossom in a spring breeze over the last couple of decades.

This spun into a courtship by correspondence that wove through months and days as they resumed their lives away from the hamlet of home. Kieran knowing with a certainty of unquestionable proportion that Sue would be the woman he would marry.

Like many tales of love true and strong, theirs is a tale that has them dipping in and out of each other’s early lives. They’d been buddies for years; growing up on farms down the road from one another and then as classmates at the local school. Their match was surely strewn in the stars, for even as young whippersnappers, they were paired as the flower boy and girl of the Daylesford debutante ball.

And he did… under skies now decked in.

As young adults, with independence and adventure pumping through their veins, they both headed away from the picturesque hamlet of their upbringing; Sue to teach and Kieran to become a jackaroo. The lure of family and friends always drew them home for gatherings. Home was where those early gales of laughter, furtive glances under long lashes and finally an acknowledgement of so much more than friendship occurred.

Spring 2018 Life

“Marriage is not always easy,” says Sue. “It all comes down to talking and being kind to one another.” Two decades on with four children now riding horses and playing under the same skies, Kieran and Sue are a living example of love; the kind that grows stronger through friendship, experience, respect and kindness. Now they welcome couples embarking on their own lives together, converting the 1800’s barn and stables as a wedding venue called Quirindi stables, alongside their Hepburn Lagoon Trail Rides business. May we all have a little of that loving in our own lives. Quirindi Stables - Newlyn North

Pampering Spas & Treatments by Za l i Ga r ret y Healing and wellbeing vibrate in every breath of crisp winter air and crunch of leaf underfoot in the Daylesford Macedon region. Wellness seems to surge through the mineral springs and into the veins of gold buried deep within the Earth. It’s that feeling of recuperation that people have when they come here that is the reason why over 120 wellness therapies are on offer in the area. Here’s a taste of therapies available in this season of reflection and recuperation for you to enjoy.

Day Spas Traditional day spas abound. They all offer pampering pleasures like massages, facials, body wraps and treatments that transform you from the outside in. However, the difference is that when you go to a day spa here, you don’t just surrender your care to the hands of someone else for a change, you also lay your wellbeing down on the ancient volcanic Earth, and that’s when the magic seems to happen.

Get hitched with country style Massage

There is nothing quite like the healing, physical touch of a masseuse as they work the tension and knots of your muscles into a syrup like state of serene. Masseuses here seem to go deeper than the physical with the simple touch of their hands. They transform both the muscles and the mind and stir you into a liquid state of bliss within that is not be missed.

by Zali Garrety

Mineral Spring Treatments The Daylesford and Hepburn area has the highest concentration of mineral springs in Australia. These gurgling brooks are regarded as healing havens. The Aboriginal women would come to Daylesford Macedon Region to take the waters. The mineral springs in Hepburn were a sacred site and a place to give give birth. Today the healing benefits of the region’s mineral water can be experienced at Hepburn Bath House & Spa. At this unique destination, visitors can experience first-hand what it’s like to “take the waters” in the social mineral baths.

Mud, sweat & two-wheels

HOTEL FRANGOS D AY L E S F O R D

by Alana Rushton If you need an outdoor mountain bike fix of sweat and dirt or a downhill challenge to leave your muscles charged and bike mud splattered - then the Daylesford Macedon region has just the trail for you. Set amongst stunning native vegetation, you can choose your two-wheeled, adrenalin-hit destination with the best guide to what’s what - The Macedon Ranges Ride Guide. It dives into 16 tracks, 16 road, and off-road, bike trails for mountain bikers and is a must-have when you’re planning your master list for mud, guts and biking glory. In the meantime here are our top picks of TRACKS TO GET YOUR HEART PUMPING:

Two of the Great Dividing Trails Gold Field Tracks: 1. Wallaby Track - From the Creswick Regional Park, the Wallaby Track takes you along 29km all the way to Wombat Station and a further 19km from Wombat Station to Daylesford, and it is not be missed. It has killer scenery, big old trees and terrain to test your mettle. 2. Dry Diggings Track - Daylesford to Castlemaine. It’s a 3-section track including an 8km descent from Daylesford to Hepburn Springs, then a 21km section from the Chocolate Mill (essential stop!) to Vaughan Springs and the final 19km will deliver you to Castlemaine. It’s becoming a really popular ride and a great one to take in the beauty of the surrounds. Kyneton to Malmsbury return and Kyneton Twin Reservoirs trails: These two sealed-road-rides around Kyneton take in some sightseeing and are both about 30km in distance. It’s a great ride for the more sedate amongst us who also want to take a picnic and perhaps attach a basket to our bike. I’m thinking French countryside here ladies.

Blackwood West trails: This is a stunning track. Most of the trails are based around the Garden of St Erth area with some fire tracks that go off into the gorgeous Lerderderg Track. There is a map of the trails near the Blackwood Merchant Store - be sure to pick up a coffee too. Finally, the RACV GoldFields Resort has international standard mountain biking trails and fabulous accommodation to collapse at afterwards. The free-to-use trail flows through the Resort’s golf course and makes use of as much of the natural formation as possible. The 4.5km circuit has all the elements riders need for

Farmers’ Markets It’s in our nature. By Ka te Ul ma n

Along with the fresh country air and the relaxed lifestyle, one of the biggest attractions of our region is the food. Fresh, seasonal, farm-grown produce brings people to the Daylesford Macedon region from all over the world. And the most authentic way to source this delicious produce is direct from the grower at one of our many farmers’ markets. You’ll find these markets on most weekends in most towns in our area, from Lancefield to Castlemaine, from Clunes to Riddells Creek, including the new weekly Daylesford market.

Save on your next Daylesford escape

Wander between stalls showcasing the freshly harvested produce and be inspired by the shapes, colours and possibilities. Be delighted by varieties you’ve never seen and reminded of what real, honest food is like.

Retreat to picturesque spa country and unwind in your choice of room or villa at charming Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel. Enjoy easy access to the region’s highlights and indulge in on-site facilities, such as the Argus Dining Room, guest lounge and library, old-world gardens and multi award-winning day spa.

And the best part of visiting a farmers’ market is knowing that the person behind the stall is the farmer who grew, reared, caught or processed the produce. There’s nothing like chatting with the farmer about growing conditions and varieties, or their favourite way to prepare their produce, to make you feel great about eating it yourself. Our farmers have a passion for and an intimate knowledge of what they’ve grown and they can’t wait to share it. When you buy their produce you’re supporting that farmer and their

Live.Love.Life. By Za l i Ga rret y

A festival that will send your senses into cartwheels of delight. From November 14-18 a revolutionary festival called Live.Love.Life. What started with the banal label of a “wellness” festival has transcended into a sensory feast that sparks and ripples with life and the unexpected. The sole intention of Live.Love.Life. is to help festivalgoers uncover a lust of life. Creative Directors, David Bromley and Kate Ceberano, have curated a 5-day program overflowing with art, music, regional food and wine and yes, traditional wellness therapies. All acts are designed to help folk find their own quickening with life again. The program for Live.Love.Life. is based on the rationale that you can’t dictate what makes people feel alive; it’s a personal thing. The festival will showcase artists, performers and authors and provide workshops and sensory experiences quite unlike any other. People can dip in and out of festival hubs and curate their own program for the festival filled with “stuff” that electrifies, challenges and delights them.

When you visit a flock of these happy hens you might be surprised to discover that the only smell is that of the fresh country air and the only sound that of a hen that’s just laid an egg. With living conditions like these, no wonder our eggs taste so delicious. And behind every happy hen is a farming family dedicated to making sure that the eggs they gather every day are nutritious and delicious. They’re the ones waking up at the crack of dawn to move the portable chook houses around their farms to ensure the hens have fresh pasture.
