Come into the region with your family or a special friend - and feel yourself getting lost in the magic of small towns like Glenlyon, Lancefield, Creswick or Romsey. Allow time to explore the parks and nature trails – or just indulge in the culture, people and ambience that are unique to each place. Pampering Spas & Treatments by Za li Ga r ret y Healing and wellbeing vibrate in every breath of crisp winter air and crunch of leaf underfoot in the Daylesford Macedon region. Wellness seems to surge through the mineral springs and into the veins of gold buried deep within the Earth. It’s that feeling of recuperation that people have when they come here that is the reason why over 120 wellness therapies are on offer in the area. Here’s a taste of therapies available in this season of reflection and recuperation for you to enjoy.
Day Spas Traditional day spas abound. They all offer pampering pleasures like massages, facials, body wraps and treatments that transform you from the outside in. However, the difference is that when you go to a day spa here, you don’t just surrender your care to the hands of someone else for a change, you also lay your wellbeing down on the ancient volcanic Earth, and that’s when the magic seems to happen.
Massage There is nothing quite like the healing, physical touch of a masseuse as they work the tension and knots of your muscles into a syrup like state of serene. Masseuses here seem to go deeper than the physical with the simple touch of their hands. They transform both the muscles and the mind and stir you into a liquid state of bliss within that is not be missed.
Mineral Spring Treatments The Daylesford and Hepburn area has the highest concentration of mineral springs in Australia. These gurgling brooks are regarded as healing havens. The Aboriginal women would come to Daylesford Macedon Region to take the waters. The mineral springs in Hepburn were a sacred site and a place to give give birth. Today the healing benefits of the region’s mineral water can be experienced at Hepburn Bath House & Spa. At this unique destination, visitors can experience first-hand what it’s like to “take the waters” in the social mineral baths.

One Very Fine Yarn Gales of laughter, bales of delicious woollen garments and an upclose and personal encounter with an alpaca are just some of the delights you’ll experience at Creswick Woollen Mills. This awardwinning tourist destination isn’t well-known to Melbournians. However, approximately 130,000 visitors a year come through the doors of this treasure trove of Australian style, charm and character. Creswick Woollen Mills is Australia’s last remaining coloured spinning woollen mill. Self-guided tours are run four times a day and the interactive exhibit A Very Fine Yarn is open all day. During one, you’ll be regaled with tales from years gone by brimming with history, antics and stoic Australian spirit. After your interactive experience, you can pat, feed or get into a staring competition with an alpaca, sheep or goat at the recently opened animal enclosure. Be sure to make time to sit back and enjoy some locally sourced produce in the recently opened café. Within eyesight of the café, soft, sigh-worthy Creswick garments dripping in colour hang against a background of corrugated tin and industrial machinery in the factory retail store. Should the siren call of the store overwhelm you, you’ll be able to wander the aisles, surreptitiously stroking jumpers, throws and scarves while you select your booty. By the end of your day at Creswick Woollen Mills you’ll have a sated belly, a new appreciation for the hard yakka that goes into making Australian textiles and arms laden with quality, woollen garments and blankets. All in all, a damn fine day.

Blanketed in History Pinches Ryzowy created Creswick Woollen Mills in 1947. He was the personification of all the qualities that make the Australian textiles industry so remarkable today - hard work, determination, enterprise and ingenuity. Like so many migrant Australians, Pinches experienced unimaginable horrors and suffering in his younger years; experiences that gave him mettle, creativity and untold courage. The Polish-born immigrant fled Poland without his family to Russia to escape the Nazis in World War Two. Once there, running now from both the Red Army and the Nazi’s, he fled to Japan and then onto China. From Shanghai, he got himself to the United States as a refugee. In his brief time in the US, he was able to make some connections and finally emigrated to Australia in 1947. In that same year, he and a fellow migrant mate decided to start Creswick Woollen Mills. Pinches (or Paul as he became over time), used his business savvy to get a bank to lend them 25,000 pounds. This was a remarkable accomplishment during one of Australia’s notoriously conservative banking eras. With a cheque in hand, the two men bought an old wickerworks factory in Creswick. From here Paul went onto proudly produce grey woollen blankets to send to the Australian soldiers during the Korean War and so a successful family business began. Creswick Woollen Mills is now run by Paul’s grandchildren Boaz Herszfeld and Sharon Herszfeld. They obviously bear the same traits as Paul Ryzowy, as the business continues to thrive year on year despite many external challenges. It now produces an extensive range of quality woollen garments sold online and across a network of eight retail stores, has an exclusive range of blankets in David Jones and an ever-growing international export business. Pinches Paul Ryzowy’s Woollen Mill is now

Chef Ben O’Brien creates delectable dishes centred around seasonal produce and can even prepare and cook up the caught trout should you wish.
For couples craving to retreat from the world for a few days, Tuki Trout Farm’s Self-contained cabins are the perfect place. Spend your days going on one of the many walks around the property, fish, feast and recharge the batteries.
Tuki Trout farm is an exclusive property that is all about people connecting with each other and life once again.

Wines with Soul by Na t a l i e Dow l i n g
The only alcohol Llew Knight recalls from childhood was the odd beer for the shearers and Christmas gifted sherry that his parents never drank. Today the cellar on his fifth generation farm, nestled among the boulder strewn slopes of Baynton, is filled with award-winning wines grown and made here. Granite Hills began in 1970, when Llew’s dad realised that traditional farms had a "tuff" future. Gordon rolled the dice with plantings, while Llew studied wine making. Llew insists that the great wines of the world emerge from hidden valleys, hamlets and villages where the vines and winemakers are enriched with the soul and humility of life on the land. Such passion has taken this small family winery to big places, as pioneers of cool climate wines – notably Riesling and Shiraz. Boutique wineries like Granite Hills restyled our wine culture, introducing varietals and shifting perceptions about what could be grown, where. Llew’s wines have inspired many to the Macedon Ranges, and he continues to trail blaze, with releases like Grüner Veltliner. Go for a drive. granitehills.com.au

heart of gold rush country on a friend’s farm, a one and a half tonne basalt boulder had sat unwanted for generations. Over the years farmers had moved it around and threatened to blow it up. Josh is a stonemason who has dedicated his life to exploring the material. He carves, he sculpts, he draws and he build walls from stones. He loves stone because it is rustic and honest. The appeal of creating harmony from its randomness drives him. Josh Bowes comes from a line of men who made things with their hands. His father was a furniture maker, his grandfather a farmer. Josh studied landscape architecture at university but left after a year, itching to work with his own hands. At 19 he set up a drystone-wall business, and since then he’s
Each stone and each job is different. Josh is inspired by history and the process and would prefer to build a wall with the stones littering a paddock, than have fresh ones brought in. His favourite of his walls encloses a herd of cattle that rub against it, burnishing the stones. He loves the composition that he’s created in the landscape: the wall is practical and beautiful, changing with the seasons. And that unwanted basalt boulder? After a month of chiseling and hammering, being transported by excavator and trailer, it sat proudly displayed in The Ballarat Art Gallery. Josh’s other creations, drystone walls, headstones and sculptures, can be found around the region. Or on instagram @drystonejackson

The ancient Incas called it “the fibre of the gods”... Stepping into Alpaca Passion is a true sensory experience. Every piece you see invites you to run your fingers along the fabric to feel how incredibly soft and luxurious alpaca wool can be. Experienced alpaca breeders Keith and Liz opened Alpaca Passion in Daylesford to showcase the highest quality alpaca fashion available worldwide, in a dedicated boutique. After 10 years operating the store in Daylesford, and now also selling online via their website, it’s safe to say they’ve achieved that goal. Today, Alpaca Passion is a shopping destination in the Daylesford and Macedon area and has grown to become the premier alpaca fashion boutique in Australia. Liz and her daughter Cassie select every item for the store from suppliers in Australia, New Zealand, Peru and Bolivia. Last year, the duo also launched their own label, A.P. MODA. A.P. MODA builds on the existing Alpaca Passion range to ensure that alpaca wool becomes a part of everyone’s wardrobe. Comprised of knitwear, coats and accessories ranging from classic staples and everyday styles to contemporary and elegant showpieces, A.P. MODA is an affordable, ethical fashion brand you can easily fall in love with. Next time you’re in the area, ensure you stop by Alpaca Passion – located in Daylesford’s Vincent Street and open 10am to 5pm every day – to find the perfect alpaca piece for your wardrobe, or to feel just how special alpaca wool can truly be.

Farmers Arms Hotel Winter is coming and our team at the Farmers Arms Hotel are getting hot under the collar. The change of seasons is our favourite time of year. The old deciduous trees on Wombat Hill are still cloaked in their outrageously colourful red, orange and vermillion autumnal leaves. “I love the mists that hang in the valleys and drift through the forest,” says our hotel and motel supervisor, Megan Evans. Like most of our staff she has been with us for years and loves the shorter days and longer nights. “One of the things I love at the Farmers, is being able to look at the rain, mist, or snow outside and having the comfort of being inside,” she says. “We pour hot mulled wine or a rich local red, there are locals and visitors all sitting by the fire and around the bar. It’s a perfect excuse to have a drink and stay warm and cosy.” Our chefs love the colder months too. This is the time when the winter vegetables, growing in the deep, rich, chocolate brown soil, are at their very best. The frosts make the carrots sweet and the brassicas (cabbage family) crisp and tasty. It gives them a chance to put on classic slow-cooked meat dishes like beef cheek and lamb shanks, corned silverside or a rich seafood laksa. Come and join us at the Farmers Arms and perhaps stay in our new Art Motel across the road – arrive as a visitor and wake up a local!
