MOUNTAIN Gin is a botanicalinfused spirit made with foraged tender pine needles and pepperberry found within 5kms of the distillery. It’s a gin that evokes a sense of dew-laden mountain air and tall, stoic pines. Handmade on the slopes of Mount Macedon by two blokes, it’s an aromatic drink for the senses. Tumble with ice, a swirl of orange peel and a decent tonic. Ask for it at a venue near you.

Summer! Just the name evokes thoughts of long, balmy days, playful breezes and long, cool drinks. Summer up here is like a cocktail in a long glass - beautiful to look at, refreshing and totally relaxing. This edition of our Summer Magazine will help you plan your getaway-in-style in Melbourne’s most beautiful backyard. Pet owners will rejoice as we give you the inside word on where to go for a pet-friendly getaway. No more guilt about leaving the fur-baby at home. No bones about it, (sorry), studies tell us that pets need a holiday too, so bring your extended family for a mini-escape you’ll all enjoy. Our friend and collaborator, Richard Cornish has penned a hauntingly beautiful story about Daylesford’s ‘lost children’. 150 years on, this remains one of Australia’s saddest stories, and yet it is one that united the people of Daylesford; and still does to this day. And ladies, if you’ve been yearning for a girls’ weekend, check out our ‘Girlfriend Getaway’ piece. There is no better place for a fun weekend away than the Daylesford and Macedon region. We’ll give you the inside tips to the best weekend ever. See you in summer. #daylesfordmacedonlife daylesfordmacedonlife.com.au

The Lost Children
HOTEL FRANGOS D AY L E S F O R D
by Richard Cornish On a quiet country lane, on the crest of a hill overlooking Daylesford, is a small stone memorial enshrined with flowers and toys. It marks the final chapter of a 150 year old saga of three little boys lost. It started on Sunday June 30 in the cold and wet winter of 1867. Brothers William and Thomas Graham, aged just six and four, went looking for wild goats by the banks of Wombat Creek with neighbour Alfred Burman, aged five. Daylesford at the time was a mix of timber huts and grand edifices built on the back of the gold rush. The boys were seen that afternoon on the outskirts of town and were told by a storekeeper to follow the recently erected telegraph lines back into town. When the three failed to return home that evening their parents raised the alarm. A search began but as darkness fell, the rescue party returned to town without the boys. The 30th had been a clear and sunny winter’s day, and the three boys had been warmly dressed.

But that night one of the worst frosts since white settlement hit the Central Highlands covering the ground with a crisp harr. The following weeks saw the fledgling community come together as one, with lowly woodcutters and hard rock miners joining landed squattocracy and mounted police in the search. Winter gave way to spring with no sign of the missing boys. Then one day a local timber cutter’s dog brought a small boot complete with foot into his camp. In a hollow tree, just 200 metres from the woodman’s hut, the two smaller boy’s bodies were found, huddled together as if protecting each other from the cold. William’s remains were found scattered nearby. It was assumed he had been outside, waiting for help. Thousands attended the service and burial of the boys and a memorial was built at the Daylesford Cemetery. William and Thomas’s father donated a sum of money to the local school and to this day a student at Daylesford Primary

IN NEED OF A GIRLS’ WEEKEND? By Zal i Ga r ret y
Flower Farmers
YOU’RE WRECKED. You’re doing 12-hour work days that intrude on your Netflix time. When you get home, you still have to make dinner and put kids to bed. Your brain is fried after work, and the endless discussions about what happened at school. You try and follow who said what to whom and then sit back and dispense wise counsel, or just referee. You think you have a partner, but you can’t remember what they look like, nor the last time you had a conversation which didn’t involve the logistics of ferrying children around.

You went to the gym was 6kg’s ago. Chocolate and wine are your go to, but their calmative effects are wearing off. You occasionally, irrationally roar at those you love like a she-wolf and regret it all five minutes later. If this in any way sounds like you, then my luscious lovely ones, perhaps it’s time for a girls’ weekend away? I decided to get the low-down from Tracey (name changed for fear of being recognised and accused of not inviting all of her girlfriends). She recently ventured to Piper St, Kyneton for a weekend mini-escape with some friends.
MORE THAN JUST A MASSAGE
WHAT PROMPTED THE WEEKEND GETAWAY? We have an annual girls’ weekend away, and we choose different locations each time. We have as much fun planning the weekend as the weekend itself. WHERE DID YOU STAY?
Hanging Rock Winery is well worth a visit. The wine is delicious, and they also have an amazing sculpture exhibition showcasing some of Australia’s best artists in the vineyard at the moment. In the afternoon we all crashed. We took some time to catch up on trashy magazines and the latest fashion magazines.
We arrived on Friday night to a large cottage in Kyneton that slept 12 of us. It was gorgeous. It’s important to find a place that is really conducive to relaxing. On the first night, we stayed in, as most of us were travelling from Melbourne after work; all arriving throughout the evening. We drank local vino and ate cheese. Unfortunately, that night we all had nightmares from the blue cheese on the mammoth grazing platter that would have catered for an army.
WHERE DID YOU EAT OUT? We ate out on Saturday night at a local restaurant, booked well in advance to be sure they had room for a party of twelve. This was a wise decision, as a lot of restaurants were busy. We also had a drink beforehand at Animus Distillery. After dinner, we kicked on at Major Tom’s. We had a lazy Sunday breakfast at the cottage with the regional produce we purchased on Saturday at the market. After a weekend

Sanatorium Lake - Mount Macedon
Fishing spots so beautiful, the fish are a bonus. By Steve Wroe
In the mid-1800’s (around the time the European population in the Daylesford Macedon region began to boom). American essayist Henry David Thoreau said, “Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” And it’s true; fishing - for me at least is about removing myself from the noise of daily life, to sit in a beautiful spot and gaze at the water. Catching fish is a bonus. Our stunning region has countless waterways on which you can remove yourself from the day-to-day hustle. These picturesque lakes, rivers and reservoirs are teeming with trout, redfin, blackfish, golden perch and other species. Fishing is also a wonderful thing to do with kids. Great family fishing spots include Lake Daylesford and Jubilee Lake in Daylesford and Creswick’s pretty, history-laden Calambeen Park is also a perfect locale. Reservoirs provide easy access, often with picnic spots, so they are ideal for families, as well as more adventurous fishers. Try Bullarto, Cosgrave, Dean and Hepburn. Then there’s Moorabool, Russells, Wattle Flat and Cairn Curran. Not to mention Pykes Creek, Lauriston, Malmsbury, Bostock and Tullaroop. Personally, I love standing on a quiet river bank, rhythmically casting lures into deep pools. If you do too, try the Lerderderg River in the Lerderderg State Park, Campaspe River near Kyneton, Jim Crow Creek near Daylesford, or the Tullaroop Creek near Clunes. If you’re not game to leave dinner to chance, Tuki Trout Farm guarantees a catch. Have your trout either expertly prepared for lunch, or cleaned and wrapped to take home. Finally, please make sure you have your Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence with you and help us protect our fish stocks by observing all fisheries rules and regulations. Not everyone is like me and some want to come home with just a fish or two, so it’s vital we look after our fish stocks.

To date, no master parfumier has been able to perfectly capture the summer fragrance of floral laden bowers, fields and gardens distinctive to the Daylesford Macedon area. However, a few boutique retailers have managed to stock rare perfumes that do come close. Manteau Noir in Daylesford has a selection of elite French perfumes. Artisan perfumiers such as Trudon and P Frain and Cie barely grace the shelves before being snaffled up by those in the know or “nose.” Josette’s Perfumery in the quaint town of Malmsbury has a range of florals in a host of formats for layering, which will ensure you’ll smell delectable for the whole day. Lavandula in Shepherd’s Flat, just a short drive from Hepburn, plays host to a retail haven disguised as a stone cottage. Within its walls, you’ll find wooden shelves lined like a scent apothecary with essential oils, moisturisers and massage oils. Their lavender oil is made on site from the lavender grown on the farm and is a must-buy. Harry and Me in Daylesford also stock a premier selection of perfumes from the fragrance houses of Carner, Nasomotto and Eight and Bob. These are just some of the bespoke, artisan retailers stocking perfumes that will whisper memories of your summer days spent in this land of blossom and bloom.
