The chocolate-brown, metre-deep topsoil that surrounds our old volcanoes grows some of the best potatoes on the planet and lambs so plump they almost roll around the paddocks. The historic villages in the region are home to some of the best restaurants in the State, from fine dining establishments to familyfriendly cafes and wineries. This superbly fertile farmland gives way to the granite country of the ranges, where massive boulders are strewn like giants’ marbles. This hard but beautiful country makes the grapevines concentrate their aroma into fewer intensely flavoured grapes, hence our award-winning cool climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and 6 | VISITOR GUIDE

sparkling Blanc de Noir. We don’t have big businesses dominating our wine industry, just families making wine in old woolsheds, 18th century bluestone buildings and brand spanking new, architect-designed cellar doors.

The 2018 Halliday Australian Wine Companion featured many of our local wineries – here are James’ best wineries of the Macedon Ranges and neighbouring wine regions.

With such great produce it is no wonder that some of the nation’s best artisan bakers, cheesemakers, charcutiers and even boutique vegetable growers have planted roots and opened their doors across the Daylesford Macedon region. For more information visit dmproduce.com.au #dmpharvest

“The best bakery in the world. This is all about heart, passion and a love for making great bread.” George Calombaris MasterChef

RedBeard is famous for its organic, sourdough bread, baked in a huge wood-fired,19th century masonry ‘scotch’ oven. Watch the artisan bakers at work. Enjoy delicious, contemporary Australian café food with excellent coffee, local wines, beers and ciders. Take home a loaf fresh out of the oven. RedBeard Historic Bakery is a year-round destination, open Friday to Monday, including most public holidays, with a warm interior for winter and shady courtyard for summer. RedBeard is fully licensed, with a menu featuring local organic produce in season.

RedBeard is committed to supporting small local farmers and producers. RedBeard is proud to be part of the growing Food Sovereignty movement in Australia, working to create a sustainable, fair and resilient agricultural sector for our future. Few bakeries in Australia create handmade, organic, sourdough bread. Even fewer use a 140-year-old scotch oven. RedBeard’s simple doughs of organic flours, salt and water are handshaped using traditional techniques, and transformed by the alchemy of natural wild fermentation and wood fired baking into a range of loaves of outstanding colour, texture and flavour.

Extend your experience by taking a fascinating, behind-the-scenes, guided tour of the historic bakery. Large groups must book ahead. Sunday workshops - where you can mix, shape and bake your own sourdough. Home baking equipment is available to purchase. Midweek workshops for groups larger than four. Bookings are essential. Regular Sunday sourdough baking workshops or special weekday group baking workshops - contact Trentham Neighbourhood Centre: admin@trenthamnc.org.au 03 5424 1354

FRESH IS BEST Visiting a local farmers’ market has become the cornerstone of a foodie’s weekend and generally a far more interactive and entertaining way to purchase your weekly provisions. Have a coffee and sample before you buy. Our farmers’ markets connect communities and give visitors a chance to shop as a local. Buy directly from the people who grow and make their produce; taste some of the regional specialities or talk to the growers and producers – if you’re looking for authentic, handmade and regional, or are just after a bargain, then we certainly have a market for you. #dmpharvest 10 | V I S I T O R G U I D E

Manteau Noir has become a popular destination store for many since opening its doors in Daylesford's Vincent Street four years ago. Owner, buyer and “slow fashion” advocate Victoria Varrasso designs the store’s coveted Australian made natural fibre womenswear brand “Manteau Noir” and recently launched her Italian handmade leather shoe and knitwear collections. “I design each collection for like minded women who appreciate gentle, timeless styling, beautiful textiles and quality of make and cut. Over time women develop their own personal style, preferring clothes that reflect their personality, feelings and values. It is imperative to me that all our brands including my own are ethically produced and can be worn season after season”, says Victoria. Here in this desirable country treasure trove you will also discover unique womenswear brands from Japan and Europe, locally made artisan teas, French flea markets finds, painterly linen cushions, niche perfume and art.

140 natural mineral springs in Central Victoria

Mineral Water Springs – yours for the tasting In days gone by, it was the allure of gold that drew people to this verdant land. Today, it’s the elixir of life. Water. Or more specifically, the underground network of natural mineral aquifers that are more abundant here than anywhere else in Australia. In fact, 85% of the country’s natural mineral springs are found in this region.

The natural mineral springs bring life to this region, evident in the lushness of the landscapes and the very special tastiness of the produce grown in the mineral rich earth. It’s no co-incidence that the words bio-dynamic, organic and natural apply to so many of the area’s food and wine producers, and why their produce is sought after by anyone who cares about what they eat and drink.

It’s called mineral water for a reason. Sourced from nature, the abundance of mineral springs in this region possess naturally occurring essential minerals that have been lauded for their health benefits for centuries.

Most of the region’s natural springs are located in the areas surrounding Daylesford, Hepburn Springs and Kyneton, with many located on public land where the water can be tasted and pumped directly from the ground.

Taste the waters for yourself: Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve features a number of different tasting springs including Soda, Locarno, Sulphur, Wyuna and Argyle Spring. CYCLING No matter the type of riding you love, there is the perfect trail, track or quiet road awaiting your adventure. GOLDFIELDS TRACK Originally known as the Great Dividing Trail, this is some of the most beautiful mountain biking and hiking in Victoria. A region steeped in history, you’ll encounter forests, both natural and man-made, pastoral countryside and single track that in some places flow on grippy loam and in others jump and jag across roots, rock ledges and coarse sandstone.

MACEDON REGIONAL PARK The fire tracks on the side of Mt Macedon range from flat trails that are gentle enough to allow you to teach little kids to ride bikes (say in the Macedon Scout Camp area) to rocky, white-knuckle descents (such as Barber’s Chute Track). These tracks are well drained and are a good option when it’s wet.

The Wallaby Track section will take you from Mt Buninyong through to Daylesford. This 90km track is for fit and confident riders and can be done in one day. Or for a more leisurely approach, the track has been broken into four sections: Mt Buninyong to Ballarat (20km), Ballarat to Creswick (25km), Creswick to Wombat Station (29km), Wombat Station to Daylesford (19km). goldfieldstrack.com.au

THE WOMBAT TRACK The Wombat loop is 18km of well signed, well maintained, flowing single track in Woodend. Nothing too difficult, constantly undulating, no big hills. wombatmtb.com.au

GARDENS There’s a major obsession with gardens in this region. With a climate that gives us four distinct seasons, along with ample rain and fertile soils, it’s the dedication of local green thumbs that has resulted in the many historic gardens that flourish throughout the Daylesford Macedon region.

“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” Greek Proverb

And they love to show them off. Visit the immaculate gardens dotted around and get a taste of life for Melbourne’s elite in the nineteenth century. Secret gardens Behind the walls of the impressive Mount Macedon mansions hide some of Victoria’s finest gardens, many National Trust-listed. Time your visit for the occasional open days in spring and autumn and delight in classic landscaping, as well as quaint cottage gardens. Be sure to check out specialist nurseries like The Garden of St Erth in Blackwood and the Mount Macedon Horticultural Society’s Garden Lovers’ Fair in October.

Public spaces In the 1850s, every Victorian town wanted a botanic garden to elevate its status, educate its residents about plants of the region and provide a tranquil haven away from the growing and bustling cities. The botanic gardens in this region are historic, varied and great spots to visit if you are a keen gardener, outdoor enthusiast or with family and friends.

Hanging Rock . Cobaw . Lancefield . Rochford Mount Macedon’s greatness is visible from all parts of this region. Known as Geburrh in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, Mount Macedon was named in 1836 by Major Thomas Mitchell. Today, Mount Macedon is home to some of the country’s most magnificent historic and private gardens. It is also crowned by the historic Memorial Cross, which each ANZAC Day plays host to one of the largest and most moving Dawn Services in Victoria. 40 | V I S I T O R G U I D E

A short drive to the village of Macedon brings you to the spectacular Honour Avenue, with its magnificent oaks that honour the 154 local men and women of Macedon and Mount Macedon who enlisted for service during the First World War. One of the best times of the year to visit this area is as the season changes, when nature puts on a stunning display of autumn colour that is second to none.

Not far from Mt Macedon is the ethereal and iconic Hanging Rock, made famous in the classic Australian film ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’, adapted from the novel of the same name by Joan Lindsay. The nearby village of Woodend is a perfect staging post to explore this area further with its enticing mix of cafés, stores and the famous Holgate Brewhouse, where a drop of ale is just the thing! The local Visitor Information Centre has the latest information on all things worth discovering. stores and more, it’s also the place for anyone with an interest in something a tad older. Did you know that a wealth of important paleontological finds have been unearthed here from extinct megafauna including Macropus titan (a kangaroo-like animal twice the size of today’s largest relative) and Diprotodon (a rhinoceros-sized wombat lookalike)?

Charming and full of exuberance is seventeen-year-old Josh from Rainbow Eggs. When he’s not at school, playing basketball or running one of the most successful free-range, ethical egg businesses in Australia, he loves hitting the bushwalking trails around the region. We asked him to let us in on his favourites:

Outdoor pursuits are in abundance here, with a rousing round of golf at the Gisborne Golf Course under the gaze of the grazing kangaroos highly recommended.

“Hanging Rock Reserve is a must. The family and I will often head there for a picnic and ‘walk the rock’. You’re guaranteed to see something new each time. Be on the lookout for the kangaroos and koalas.

Be sure to stop by the Trading Post on Mount Macedon while you’re there for great coffee and some regional food to refuel you. My best-kept secret is Mount Charlie Flora reserve. This little-known spot is excellent for mountain biking and hiking. You’ll see some astonishing wildflowers and native plants. Afterwards, head to Baringo or Jed in Gisborne for a great recovery brunch.”

A CLASSY COOL

Snapshot

Located less than an hour from Melbourne, the Macedon Ranges is one of the most geographically diverse and beautiful wine regions in Australia. Here, wine making tradition and terroir combine in order to create outstanding wine with long lasting quality. With a rich and long history in producing some of the finest Sparkling, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and its well known peppery Shiraz, the region also produces new and exciting varietals such as Prosecco, Gamay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc and Lagrein. Families of vignerons, stemming from the late 60s, still own many of the wineries today. Vines that have been hardened, weathered and handed down, are now in their prime. It is here where you’ll often still be able to meet the winemaker and discuss the grape, wine and its life over a glass or two. So, hit the road to uncover the cellar doors of these artisans’ boutique wineries for an experience unlike any other.

Mount Franklin is another must for anyone visiting the area. The mountain is of significant spiritual importance to the Dja Dja Wurrung people. The Dja Dja Wurrung people still share their creation story about a disagreement between Mount Franklin and another mountain further away. These two mountains had an argument and hurled giant rocks at each other; explaining the volcanic event that the people would have witnessed when Mount Franklin was created. The extinct volcanic crater is a picturesque picnic spot and the view from the walking track around the crater is not to be missed. Uncover more of the region’s rich history at Yandoit. This was a main settlement area for the Swiss Italian community. Wander the streets and you’ll stumble across ruins that give you an insight into the houses of that time. Mount Franklin Reserve Mount Franklin, or Lalgambook, as it is known by the Dja Dja Wurrung people, is an extinct volcano offering fine views on the approach to the summit. The sheltered crater is a superb place for a picnic or simple camping set amongst huge and pretty conifers and deciduous trees creating an exotic atmosphere. Mount Franklin is a fine example of a breached scoria cone. The breach, through which the road now enters the crater, is thought to have been caused by a flow of lava breaking through the crater rim. ALPACA PASSION A family-owned business, Alpaca Passion has been at home in Daylesford for over ten years. With a vast range of stylish alpaca garments and cosy homewares selected from the best alpaca fashion suppliers in the world, Alpaca Passion is a shopping destination, and a must-visit on your next trip to the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges area. Co-founders Keith and Liz began their passion for alpaca fifteen years ago with the purchase of a small herd to graze under their chestnut orchard in northeast Victoria. At the time, not much was known about these captivating animals, or the luxurious fleece they produced. Nowadays, alpaca wool is a highly sought after natural fibre and Alpaca Passion is the premier alpaca fashion boutique dedicated to showcasing what the ancient Incas called “the fibre of the gods”.

Provedores and artisans galore. Vintage, retro, amazing art in store. Adore and explore it all (around the bend there’s even more...)

Kyneton to Tooborac and everything in between Tylden . Drummond . Carlsruhe . Kyneton . Lauriston Pipers Creek . Sidonia . Barfold . Glenhope . Baynton Tooborac . Redesdale Whether history, shopping or eating thrills you, this part of the countryside offers all the fun stuff and more. In fact, we dare you to uncover even more surprises on the roads from Kyneton to Pipers Creek and beyond. Today, this area is an epicentre for foodies and shopaholics alike, all beating a path to Kyneton’s Piper Street.

But it wasn’t always like this. Established in 1850 and named after the English village of Kineton in Warwickshire, Kyneton was once a major resting hub for those on their way to find gold in central Victoria. Incredibly, Kyneton Courthouse, famous for trying that Aussie bad boy Ned Kelly in 1870, continues to function as a Magistrates’ Court.

Jason Waterhouse and Magali Gentric Stockroom Kyneton

Today, Kyneton is becoming renowned as a place for traditional makers and artisans, so it’s no wonder that this town is home to the hugely successful Lost Trades Fair. Held each year in March, the Lost Trades Fair celebrates the art of skilled manual work, ancient and traditional trades and crafts, and their special tools, traditions, languages and secrets. Plan a road trip enjoy a ‘lost weekend’ at one of the most inspiring events you will ever experience.

Find your way to the small country town of Tooborac and you’ll be rewarded by the Tooborac Hotel, the oldest National Trust listed country pub in Victoria. Built in 1857 of bluestone, ironstone and granite its recent transformation to restaurant, brewery and arguably the last honest country pub attracts visitors from far and wide. If your taste is not hand-crafted beers, then this is the place to sample great local wines such as a Shiraz, Viognier or Verdelho.

Further travel around this area will bring you to wineries, farm gates, or the opportunity to appreciate the strong connection to the land of the original inhabitants, the Dja Dja Wurrung and the Taungurung people.

Jason and Magali are responsible for one of the hottest, contemporary art spaces in Australia. Stockroom’s fusion of modern art, objects and fashion are showcased in a way that leaves you wanting to take everything home. We asked them what they do on that odd day off when they can simply hang out with the family. “After the dogs take the family for a wild run on our 10-acre bush property, we like nothing better than to head to Daylesford and grab a coffee at Larder. Then we’ll go to the Daylesford Railway Station and wander the wares at the Daylesford Market on a Sunday morning.

Tag us #daylesfordmacedonlife

If the day’s a hot one, we all head to Turpin Falls in Kyneton. It’s one of the best watering holes for swimming, and if the falls are pumping, it’s gorgeous. Yes, the dogs come in too. That’s usually an adventure. After that, everyone’s usually famished, so we go to Piper St in Kyneton to grab a burger at Major Toms and enjoy some live music if it’s on. Then we’ll take a slow drive home through Wombat forest. We will most likely stop in at the Glenlyon General store and have a coffee before enjoying the stunning sunset and making a meal from the veggies we got from the market and our garden.”

A short drive out of Castlemaine will bring you to Harcourt Valley, famed for its apples,

Journey on to Malmsbury, an old service centre for diggers travelling to Bendigo and Castlemaine – it’s well worth a look. Not only is it home to one of Victoria’s oldest and most beautiful Botanic gardens, it is also the place for a great coffee from Moto Bean Coffee Roasters, or a loaf of heavenly bread from the Malmsbury Bakery and the place to purchase unique, local art from the Tin Shed Gallery. The Governor’s Café at the Old Castlemaine Goal has sprawling views of Castlemaine and beyond. For third generation local Calum, owner of the said Gaol, this was the ideal locale for him to share what would make a perfect weekend getaway itinerary in these historic parts. “If you’re into riding then you have to bring your bike and hit the Castlemaine to Maldon Rail Trail. Take a picnic in a backpack and a bottle of local wine, and you’re sorted. Then, of course, there’s the newly opened Mountain Bike Park in Harcourt Valley. That’s more for your serious mountain bikers, but it’s not to be missed. After a ride, you obviously have to come here to the Gaol to do the adults only Breakout, where you have to try and escape

If you’re into music like I am, then you can’t go past The Bridge Hotel for new music. Then there’s the Theatre Royale for an old-fashioned cinema experience and some great live music gigs. We also put on live music now once a month on Friday and Saturday nights. For those into all things vintage and artisan, go to the Mill in Castlemaine where you’ll uncover antiques, vintage upcycled treasures and some terrific food and beer. “

Out & About

The Mill, Castlemaine

Malmsbury Viaduct

Starting as the Castlemaine Woollen Mill in 1875, and finishing as Victoria Carpets in 2013, The Mill is rapidly becoming a place for food and artisan manufacturing, and is a key part of Castlemaine’s vibrancy. Here you’ll find an abundance of small businesses: café, coffee roastery, wine, ice-cream, bread, cakes, beer, and more to come.

The Malmsbury Viaduct is a feat of incredible stone engineering, built in 1859 using thousands of labourers to carry the Bendigo railway line over the Coliban River. It is one of Victoria’s largest nineteenth century engineering structures, consisting of five-arched spans reaching 152 metres from end-toend. Best access point is found along the walking track from the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens.

Walker Street, Castlemaine Malmsbury Botanic Gardens Once you’ve collected local goods from the surrounding provedores, farm gates and wineries, head to the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens. Established in the 1850’s, the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens are one of Victoria’s earliest regional botanic gardens encompassing a wonderful collection of trees and shrubs along with a few surprises from its rich past. The central focal point of the Gardens is the Ornamental Lake with the formed island at its centre. The fountain was built in the 1930’s from bluestone salvaged from a nearby demolished mill. Both the fountain and the lake edges have been restored in recent years and the Dutch Elms planted at the front of the lake were planted as a memorial to soldiers of the First World War. Ellesmere Place, Malmsbury

Malmsbury Buda Historic Home & Garden ‘Buda’ is an authentic house and garden, and a real survivor from the gold rush era. Named after Budapest by its Hungarian owner, Ernest Leviny, it was home to the creative Leviny family for 118 years and houses their significant intact collection of furniture, art works and belongings and surrounded by an historic 1.2ha garden. 42 Hunter Street, Castlemaine Theatre Royal Catch a flick or a gig at Castlemaine’s Theatre Royal, Australia’s oldest continually operating theatre. Originally constructed to entertain diggers during the gold rush, the much-loved, fully restored art deco Royal is now a cinema and live music venue. Choose from arthouse and blockbuster movies or catch local and international touring gigs. Round it all out with treats from the fully licensed Café Royal. 30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine

Castlemaine Botanic Gardens Wander through this 19th Century garden, one of Victoria’s oldest regional botanic gardens. Discover many original features including the carriage drive, and the Elm and Oak avenues, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the lake. Established in 1856 the Gardens have recently undergone a multi-million dollar refurbishment. The Gardens feature an outstanding collection of native and exotic mature trees, some of which are registered with the National Trust. They include a huge English Oak which was planted by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1867. 2 Walker Street, Castlemaine Castlemaine Diggings Natural Heritage Park From the remains of house sites and puddling machines to the gold mines and gullies that yielded up fortunes, this is Australia’s first National Heritage Park, harbouring fascinating tales of a golden past and retains much of its goldrush character. Spring wildflowers, scenic drives, bushwalking, cycling, guided tours and gold fossicking are some of the highlights. There are many wonderful walking tracks in each of these parks but the most popular is The Goldfields Track. The Track runs through the Diggings with several entry and exit points at places like Mount Alexander, Chewton, Fryerstown and Vaughan. For more information: maldoncastlemaine.com.au Vaughan Springs Formerly a large gold rush town called “The Junction”, Vaughan Springs was a favoured alluvial gold and market gardening area for Chinese miners. Today you can visit the mineral springs and take a stroll along the beautiful Loddon River, sample the mineral water from provided taps or go for a swim, all to the beautiful sound of birds singing in the trees. There are several walks you can take from the day visitor area. If you’re not afraid of heights, one short walk will bring you out high up on a rocky ledge, with spectacular views of the creek below. Make sure you take a look through the historic Chinese Cemetery while you’re there. Vaughan

Creswick to Clunes and the area beyond

Books and volcanic planes. Spuds grow through golden veins.

Dean . Creswick . Rocklyn . Coghills Creek . Ascot Newlyn . Allendale . Blampied . Smeaton . Clunes Campbelltown . Glengower . Talbot Old meets new and heritage joins modern in this beautifully picturesque part of the region. Travelling through exceptional landscapes, you’ll come to Creswick, a town built on the proceeds of rich gold deposits mined from the 1850s. Today this township displays fine examples of the grand architecture so reminiscent of a bygone era. Far from being ‘just’ a mining town, Creswick is the birthplace of reforestation and is the continuing home of the School of Forestry, which opened over 100 years ago and has evolved its focus from axes to ecology. It is also the birthplace of one of Australia’s most notable artistic families, the Lindsay Family, with artist Norman Lindsay perhaps the most famous of Creswick’s artistic sons. With sparkling eyes and searing intelligence, the highly acclaimed author and Clunes Booktown Founder, Tess Brady reveals those secret pleasure destinations that are not be missed. “My first and most obvious answer will be Clunes. The best way to experience this remarkable town is to walk the streets and not just view the impressive buildings, but it’s to dig a little deeper and talk with the locals. It’s vital if you want to get a feel for the town that you stop and say hello to people. It’s when you start talking to people that stories bubble up and the unique streetscape comes alive with history. Don’t forget to sit a while by Creswick Creek and you may come across a platypus. You’ll need to be still and listen a while to experience that.

Then there’s Talbot and the Shelter or Maternity Tree. The Dja Dja Wurrung women gave birth in this tree that is estimated to be about 700 years old. It is 15 metres in diameter and has a hollowedout centre. It’s an extraordinary and sacred place. From Talbot head towards Maryborough on the Ballarat- Maryborough road and about 1km along turn left into Pollacks Rd and you’ll find it! Lambley Gardens and Nursery in Ascot is an absolute delight and you can wander for hours discovering bowers and blooms of beauty. What I love about this place is that everything they sell is perfect for our climate. A real secret that my daughter and I uncovered was a memorial avenue of Walnut trees in the town of Tourello on the road from Ascot to Clunes. It’s remarkable.” V I S I T O R G U I D E | 113

The Wombat State Forest and Lerderderg State Park are some of the most ideal natural locations for spotting Australia’s much-loved furry creatures: fluffy-eared koalas, velvety kangaroos and chubby wombats. Bacchus Marsh to Blackwood proudly owns a rich history worth exploring. Originally inhabited by the Kutung, the Wathaurong, the Wurundjeri, the Jaara and the Ngurelban Indigenous tribes, this 120 | V I S I T O R G U I D E

connection can still be seen through place names such as Myrniong, which was named with the murrnong plant in mind, the Aboriginal word for ‘yam daisy’ – a popular food source. Successive waves of farmers, goldminers and timber workers have all shaped the personality of this land with the legacy still on show in the small towns of Blackwood, Bacchus Marsh and beyond. One of Victoria’s famous bushrangers, Captain Moonlight, has even been tied to this area.

Charles Dickie has been a Park Ranger for thirty-seven years and currently has Lerderderg State Park in his territory. This quietly spoken gentleman still has a passion for state and national parks and the wonders they hold for anyone up for a ramble. He is as passionate about the care of the parks as he is about people enjoying them. Charles believes healthy parks make healthy people, as a visit to a park can improve your health and wellbeing. He gives us the inside word on some of the best places to go to in the stunning Lerderderg State Park as well us some sage advice on what to take when we do it. “One of the most popular picnic areas is at Mackenzies Flat which you’ll discover at the end of Lerderderg Gorge Road. Enjoy a picnic lunch listening to the sounds of the birds and then go for a long leisurely stroll. You can’t go past the walking track that winds its way beside the river. Along the way, you’ll find a few favourite swimming holes especially a spot called Graham’s Dam. Then there’s the O’Briens Crossing picnic area at the opposite end of the Gorge.

O’Briens is a great central locale to use as a base as you explore any of the terrific walking tracks around it. Byres Back Track links O’Briens Crossing with the popular mining town of Blackwood. I love this walk as most of the track follows the old water race which supplied water to the early gold miners. One of the little-known tracks and one that is only accessible on foot is the Blackwood Ranges Track. You can see the whole vista of the park from the mouth of the gorge to the top of the gorge. You can imagine that you are the only people in the world up here. The best time to head for any of the breathtaking bushwalks is in Spring when the wildflowers are in bloom, the river is flowing, and the birds are celebrating. Be sure to pack a map, water and a good GPS. Don’t rely on your mobile phone alone and be sure to tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. “ For further information on parks in Victoria please visit www.parks.vic.gov.au
