Wellbeing escapes TRAVEL OPTIONS Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges region can be accessed by car from Melbourne Airport and CBD via the Tullamarine Freeway and Calder Highway or via the Western Highway. If you don’t have your own a car, there are plenty of hire-car options available. If you prefer to travel by train, V/Line runs services regularly from Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station (Ballarat or Bendigo lines). An easy 30 minute drive along the Calder Highway from Melbourne’s CBD is the picturesque town of Sunbury. Providing an ideal gateway to the region, Sunbury will introduce you to some of our finest cool climate wines. There are historic bluestone buildings and many walking and cycling trails to choose from so there is plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

A little further up the road from Sunbury are the stunning Macedon Ranges. This area is wellknown for award-winning wineries and most celebrated for its sparkling ‘Macedon’ which is modelled on the French Champagne style. Here you will find delicious treats, berry farms, artist cooperatives and the famous Hanging Rock. Wind your way to the summit of Mount Macedon and enjoy the stunning view, or if a dose of colour, movement and frivolity is what you yearn, head to a country race meet at Hanging Rock or Kyneton. Gourmands will delight with a visit to Kyneton, laden with award-winning cafes, restaurants and friendly country pubs. There are boutique stores, antique shops and local artisans who will gladly share their inspiration with you.

With our numerous villages, each with their own distinctive offering and appeal, you will always be discovering unique experiences. In Trentham you simply must visit the historic bakery for a tasty treat, the fabulous corner hotel, a cafe for a relaxing coffee and even some wombat spotting! Most people visit the twin towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs to relax, to enjoy a spa treatment and to sample the mineral water from one of the naturally occurring mineral springs. There are more than 70 in the region making it the largest concentration of mineral spring water in Australia. Nearby Clunes and Creswick are steeped in gold mining history and enterprising locals have reinvigorated these villages to offer unique experiences for you to enjoy.

Around Bacchus Marsh and Myrniong on the Western Highway you will find pick-your-own orchards, market gardens and historic buildings. Visit quirky country stores in Gordon, fossick for antiques and collectables in Ballan and nearby, dine at some fabulous country pubs that offer fresh local produce and warm hospitality. Closer to Ballarat you will find a medieval castle brimming with activity. For those who love the great outdoors, there is a range of spectacular nature-based attractions including: Victoria’s longest single drop waterfall at Trentham; challenging hikes along the Great Dividing Range; or leisurely walks through state parks like Long Forest Nature Reserve and the Brisbane Ranges. Take a horseback trail ride, fish for trout or ride your bike from Romsey to Lancefield along the designated trail. Our numerous towns, villages and hamlets are brimming with authentic experiences which will keep you amused and relaxed for hours or days.

Daylesford and Hepburn Springs Tour 240kms via the calder highway

Head up the Calder Freeway (an extension of Tullamarine Freeway) from Melbourne and in less than 90 minutes and you’ll be in the heart of Australia’s spa country – a haven for rest and relaxation. Daylesford and Hepburn Springs have the largest concentration of spa therapists per capita in Australia. Here you will soon be enjoying a soothing massage, treatment or facial, or unwinding with a dip in local mineral water, compelling the stresses to melt away. After a spa treatment, there is nothing like a relaxing meal with some of the best food in Victoria. If you love wine then you won’t be disappointed as wineries abound. Or perhaps you might prefer to indulge in some local beer or cider. Another great feature of our region is the wide variety of accommodation options to choose from. Daylesford offers an array of interesting boutiques, specialty food outlets, galleries with work by local artists, antiques and collectables stores, cafes and restaurants. High above the township is the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens which provide excellent views over Daylesford. While in town be sure to visit scenic Lake Daylesford and explore the area on foot or by hiring a row boat. Hepburn Springs is best known for its natural spring water. Sample the local drop throughout the Mineral Springs Reserve, or if you prefer immersion, try one of the mineral spring water bathing options. Boutique stores, cafes, restaurants and accommodation houses line the main street and it is the perfect spot to enjoy a lazy afternoon with high tea and bubbles. Trentham offers award-winning cuisine, an amazing bakery, delightful art galleries and interesting antique stores. Just a few minutes down the road is Victoria’s longest single drop waterfall – Trentham Falls. Musk is a tiny hamlet offering an award-winning winery, a historic house and gardens and one of our regions’ top smallgoods producers. Glenlyon has great coffee at the general store and wineries and accommodation that allow you to get up close and personal with the resident wildlife including kangaroos, birds and local farm animals.

Western HIGHway Tour 114kms

Touring through the western part of our region via the Western Highway is a great day trip out of Melbourne. Your journey will lead you through picturesque countryside to quaint villages and hamlets, past farm gates and fruit stands, into burgeoning foodie towns and to friendly country pubs. All you need to do is detour from the main freeway and you will be surprised at what you’ll find. In the Bacchus Marsh food bowl you’ll fill baskets with freshly picked fruit and vegetables or you can pick your own. After gathering your fresh produce, you can visit some of the area’s quirky country stores, fossick for antiques and collectables and snare a bargain. Many gorgeous bluestone buildings and historic cottages, reminiscent of times gone by, also wait to be explored. Getting close to nature is well worth your effort, so make sure you pack your hiking boots and a water bottle. There is a range of spectacular nature-based activities in our state parks.

Melton has award-winning wineries with restaurants and cellar doors, walking and cycling trails for all fitness levels and a great collection of public art. It is also the home of harness racing.

Macedon Ranges and Moorabool Loop 240kms via the Calder and Western Highways

Bacchus Marsh is renowned for producing some of Victoria’s best market gardens and orchards. Find farm gate stalls laden with local produce along the town’s Avenue of Honour, and enjoy cycling and walking trails as well as historic buildings. Myrniong is a tiny hamlet with beautiful tree-lined streets and bluestone buildings. This tranquil little town plays host to a number of festivals each year. It is also gaining a reputation as a foodie destination. Ballan is situated on the Werribee River and is best known for its festivals, active artistic community and mineral springs. Pack a picnic and your hiking boots to explore the nearby walking trails of the Brisbane Ranges and You Yangs Forest Park. Gordon is a picturesque village and an ideal day-trip destination. It’s quirky stores include a hat shop, a cafe inspired by Henry Lawson and gift store. And of course, there is a great country pub. Wallace is developing as a new tourism town. This proud potato growing town is now attracting award-winning chefs who are preparing meals laden with fresh local produce.

This loop will take you through scenic rural landscapes of mountain ranges and sweeping vistas, past award-winning wineries and their acres of grapevines, to gorgeous boutiques and galleries and delicious eateries. The best way to experience all of this is by taking the Calder Freeway from Melbourne to Woodend via Gisborne, through the various villages and back down the Western Highway. Woodend, Kyneton and Trentham are all fabulous if you wish to delight your taste buds with all myriad of flavours and cuisines from biscuits to pizza, gourmet bakery fare to fine dining. The Macedon Ranges is well-known for its cool climate wines but is most famous for its mysterious geological formation Hanging Rock, made famous by the novel and film Picnic at Hanging Rock. Artists also abound in this region. Blackwood and Geendale are surrounded by lush forests making them ideal for outdoor activities such as bushwalking and 4 wheel driving.

Woodend offers visitors a mix of wine and retail shops, delightful cafes and country pubs. There is a range of gourmet local produce on offer plus, gorgeous heritage manors and boutique accommodation. Kyneton is a food lovers delight. Here you can find a hatted restaurant alongside eateries offering designer biscuits, fair-trade coffee, wood fired pizza and local epicurean delights. There is also a myriad of interesting and unique boutiques, galleries and stores to browse. Malmsbury features many National Trust buildings, gardens and an elegant and historic viaduct. With deep bluestone gutters, corrugated sidings and long veranda overhangs, this tiny village also has lovely Botanic Gardens. Trentham offers award-winning cuisine, an historic bakery, art galleries, antique stores, markets, gardens and more. Blackwood is surrounded by The Wombat State Forest offering a pristine backdrop to the historic village. Alongside its tall timbers, lush greenery and flourishing commercial nurseries, you’ll find historic tea rooms, excellent fare and great bush walking trails. Greendale is surrounded by scenic rolling hills and green country landscapes. Strap on your boots and take a bushwalk, pack a picnic lunch or visit the historic hotel and old sandstone church ruins.

Hepburn Tour 310kms via the Western Highway

On this journey you will step back in time to discover our gold mining history, taste local wines, enjoy gourmet food and take a dip in natural mineral spring waters – what else could you wish for? To take this tour, travel along the Western Highway until you reach Creswick and nearby Clunes, idyllic villages that sit in the heart of where the Victorian gold rush began. As the home of one of Australia’s most important artistic and literary families, Creswick abounds with Lindsay memorabilia and art. A visit to the local museum will open up this treasure. If its gold you desire, you must experience the Buried Rivers of Gold Heritage Trail. A visit to Clunes is a visit to yesteryear, while Smeaton offers wineries and trout fishing. Head into the spa town of Daylesford for a delicious meal and spa before sampling the famous natural mineral spring water.

Creswick has a broad main street reminiscent of a bygone era and the grand building architecture owes its existence to the gold rush. Here you can also discover the only remaining woollen spinning mill of its type left in Australia. Clunes is best known for its annual Booktown festival held each May and is Australia’s only recognised international Booktown – one of only 17 in the world. Explore the antique and collectible stores, go gold prospecting and take a walk through Mount Beckworth nature reserve. Smeaton will take you back to simpler times at the historic five-storey bluestone Anderson’s Mill. You can try your hand at catching a trout (and enjoy eating it too). Stock up on hand-woven garments or stay overnight in a boutique country property. Daylesford is Victoria’s renowned spa town. Boasting the largest concentration of spa therapists per capita in Australia. Enjoy a soothing massage or immerse yourself in our local mineral waters. Sailors Falls is just seven minutes from Daylesford. Here you will find local wineries and the Sailors Falls Reserve where you can walk the loop trail and collect mineral water at the springs enroute – so don’t forget your water bottle.

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Tour 147kmS via the Calder Highway

Broadmeadows is an outer suburb of Melbourne where you can stop and buy some great food and trinkets from all over the world. Take an esky with you as food manufacturers sell direct to the public. Sunbury is the birthplace of The Ashes and has the oldest homestead in Victoria. There are also numerous walking trails, cycling tracks and award-winning wineries.

It’s so easy to explore our beautiful region and it is so close to the city. In just 20 minutes from the airport you’ll be in the heart of Melbourne’s closest wine region – Sunbury. A little further down the road, the picturesque villages of Riddells Creek, Romsey and Lancefield offer even more wineries and an array of delicious local produce. Every good road trip needs somewhere that you can stretch your legs. There are walking tracks and trails and an abundance of native wildlife including kookaburras, galahs, waterbirds and paddocks filled with kangaroos. Creativity abounds with those who are inspired by their country surrounds to create beautiful works of art and crafts that are sold in galleries and cafes everywhere. Here you can also wander the beautiful wide tree-lined streets and visit monthly farmers markets where you can find organic vegetables, plants, honey and fresh baked bread. Before heading back, be sure to enjoy the view from the top of Mount Macedon which takes in the entire southern plain towards Port Phillip Bay.

Riddells Creek is located at the foothills of the scenic Macedon Ranges and home to National Trust buildings, galleries, wineries and Mount Charlie State Forest. Clarkefield boasts a National Trust registered building that serves as the local pub – which rumours say is haunted. The town celebrated its 155th birthday in 2012. Romsey has wineries, cellar doors, farm gate stalls and plenty more appetising fare to stock your picnic basket. Lancefield has the classic air of a pastoral working town with an arts, antiques and culinary edge and is connected to nearby Romsey via a walking and bike trail. Macedon & Mount Macedon are home to walking trails, stunning gardens picnic reserves. Take some time to enjoy the sweeping views from the Memorial Cross at the summit. Gisborne has restaurants and cafés, wine bars and boutiques. Discover cool climate wines, drive past farm gate stalls and explore the local Botanic Gardens.

Even more precious than gold, natural spring water attracted the first Swiss-Italian settlers to the region in the 1800s. Our region is home to more than 70 natural mineral springs, and it was these, as much as the prospect of easy riches, that attracted the first wave of migrants to the area. Rich in magnesium, calcium and silica, among other minerals, the springs were believed to cure all sorts of afflictions from acne to arthritis. In the early 1800s, locals lobbied the council to halt sluicing for gold to protect the water and the Mineral Springs Reserve at Hepburn Springs was created in 1865. Each of the minerals specific to the waters found in the area can benefit health: calcium is good for the development of bone tissue, function of muscles and relaxation; magnesium helps with muscle aches and pains; silica is important for strong bone formation; bicarbonate balances the body’s pH levels; and iron, important for red blood cells, is easily absorbed through the water.
