Jewellery is, without a doubt, one of the most demanding of subjects to photograph well. In order to achieve a fine image, consideration has to be given to a range of aspects, including the equipment used, styling and and props, lighting, retouching and finishing. I've been a professional photographer for over twenty five years and have developed a specialist expetise in photographing jewellery. The exceptional technical challenges of jewellery photography of different types and styles really excites me and to achieve a great result for a client is a real buzz. In the following pages I'd like to share with you some of the jewellery images I've created for clients. As you turn the pages please do admire the beauty of the piece and the craftsmanship of the jewellery designer and maker involved but don't forget it took great photography too for you to enjoy it here! If you think the time is right to move to the next level, then contact me to discuss where I might help.

Inspiring‌ This range gets its inspiration from titanium and this point-of-sale image I created took a grey metal theme, along with props, to give an eye-catching and artistic image. The whole shot is staged for real in front of the camera. When creating these 'still life' shots it's really important to me that I combine very high quality representation of the actual jewellery within an equally well done creative setting to showcase it to best effect.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend‌ Diamonds may be a girl's best friend but they are far from a photographer's! The effect of diamonds grouped together as here is truly luxurious. Being able to mix the different rings like this helped to capture the life and energy of these diamonds which is such an important part of their character.

Different shapes and sizes

Watches by Tissot

Jewellery comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes; working with the possibilities can give delicate sinuous lines or chunky shapes and reflections which are flexible enough to use in a variety of marketing settings - web pages, adverts, editorial copy, point of sale etc

Mood captured‌ For distinctive ranges it can be good to use them together to create a particular mood or theme.

On the left I've used a monochrome theme for a moody, masculine feel, and on the right skillful use of backlighting brings out the fun, vibrant qualities of this colourful glass jewellery.

Sinuous silver‌ Simple silver pendants makes a beautiful but subtle fashion statement. Shot here with very careful lighting and with the chains playing an equal 'leading' rather than supporting role some great effects are possible.

Detail

These are a wonderful mixture of colourful braid, leather thongs and silver hearts. I give the same attention and care to every piece whatever its make-up or value. These were placed together with care in front of the camera and a lot of time goes into making sure every fine detail is just right.

A work of art‌ Some pieces are scuptural pieces of art rather than simply jewellery. Often of unusual shape a lot of the challenge for me as the photographer is practical eg how to support them in front of the camera before I move on to the technical expertise of how best to light them to capture their unique and arresting qualities.

“We are extremely pleased with the results achieved from working with Photography by Ward. Having always previously done our own photography in-house for our brochure and promotional work to a reasonable level, we were looking to take our imagery to the next level. By working with Photography by Ward at this professional level, we achieved images that were exactly what we were looking for and even beyond our expectations.” J Boston, managing director, denisonboston men’s accessories "Firefrost jewellery is not easy to photograph well. The Venetian glass I use is lined with gold or silver and it is this lining that makes the colours look so good. But It is tricky to get photographs that do the jewellery justice. Dave took great care to bring out the shine and lustre of the beads. I'm delighted with the results. I look forward to working with Dave again. Karen Carter, Firefrost Ltd “As a busy London-based jewellery business, we don’t always have the time to attend photo shoots. When we discovered Dayve Ward’s method of overcoming this time constraint we were intrigued. The process was very smooth. We simply popped our jewellery in the post to Dave’s studio and he used a combination of personalised client web galleries and phone conversations to show us how the photo shoot and ideas were going, all those miles away! We received our jewellery within days and a disk followed with all the final images, ready to use.” Richard Ball, McClure Ltd, Hatton Garden, London "It has been great working with you; I've learnt a lot and enjoyed myself enormously. I look forward to future collaborations". Jane Rogers Contemporary Jewellery, Bristol "We had a huge catalogue of jewellery pictures to be taken and were delighted with the variety that Dave managed to achieve despite the relatively narrow product range. The stylised group shots are particularly beautiful and look fantastic in our magazine advertising." Fatlip, Worcester "We have a great team working in our business and now after working with Photography by Ward a number of times we think of Dayve as part of our team" Annie Haak Designs
