Kellie Pickler:

Tough And True On 100 Proof Kellie Pickler, among the final six of American Idol’s 2005 season, is truly Country talented and tough, writes Bob Doerschuk… in Pickler’s soul, nurtured by the young singer’s Southern roots and difficult early years.

“Based on some of the things that I’ve recorded in the past, you wouldn’t know that the biggest reason why I fell in love with Country Music is because of Kitty Wells and Tammy Wynette and Loretta and Dolly,” she said. “I know that music has changed so much; the music today is so different than the music I listened to. And I guess everyone’s definition of Country Music is different. But I’m excited about the sound that we have.”

It’s not just the life that beckons toward Pickler. As she demonstrates on ‘100 Proof’, her latest album on 19 Recordings Limited/BNA Records, it’s the music too. Maybe it’s the music most of all. In the opening seconds of the very first track, ‘Where’s Tammy Wynette’ (written by Jimmy Ritchey, Don Poythress, and Leslie Satcher), she kicks back and sings passionately, mashing anger and pain together in just a few notes: “I stay torn between killin’ him and lovin’ him. He stays torn between neon lights and home.” And just like that, we’re in a world lit by jukeboxes and perfumed by worn leather and spilled beer.

That sound is traditional, all the way down to mixing spoons into the rhythm track on the album’s first single, ‘Tough’ (written by Leslie Satcher). For fans drawn by the infectious pop flavour of her Platinum single ‘Best Days of your Life’ (Pickler and Taylor Swift) or the Gold-charting ‘Red High Heels’ (Pickler, Chris Lindsey, Aimee Mayo, and Karyn Rochelle), and ‘Small Town Girl’ (Pickler, Lindsey, and Mayo), the new direction is unmistakable.

“I really want people to take me seriously as an artist, which has been a little difficult coming off of American Idol since there’s such a stereotype. I was 19 and green when I did that show and you only got to know about this much of me,” said Pickler,

pinching thumb and finger together. “You don’t really get to pick what you do. I mean, why would I sing a Queen song? You don’t get to develop so much as an artist. You just become a star.”

Pickler’s finish among the final six of the show’s 2005 season lofted her into unfamiliar territory. Her ascension was so quick that she had to record the vocals of her debut album, Small Town Girl, while on the road, singing to backing tracks sent from Nashville. The results broadened her appeal, but the working method and several aspects of its sound left her feeling somewhat off balance.

“I can’t say I didn’t have fun with songs like ‘Red High Heels,’ and ‘I Wonder’ (Pickler, Lindsey, Mayo, and Rochelle) is my life,” she added. “But I’ve done the ‘Best Days of Your Life’ kind of songs. To me, that’s not a Country production at all. Anything I sing kind of sounds Country just because of the way I talk. But for this record, I worked with a whole different group of people. I’ve been able to just go in the studio and play and have fun and figure out what cord plugs into what instrument and what this button does. I skipped all that developing because I just became ‘American Idol Kellie Pickler,’ so it’s been a slow and

“I was born in the wrong generation,” said Kellie Pickler, looking through the windows at Sony Music Nashville’s offices toward somewhere far south of town. “I wish I would have been in the generation before Twitter and cell phones, when there was that mysteriousness about being an artist. I wish I could have been a part of that generation where you’d go to the Ryman and sing and then walk out the back door and go honky-tonkin’. Well, we do that anyway, but because it’s on YouTube the next day, you can’t really completely cut loose.”

long process of trying to get to the point where I am now.”

Pickler is quick to credit coproducers Frank Liddell and Luke Wooten as indispensible in helping achieve her goals for 100 Proof. The fact that she had never worked with them previously encouraged her to break from her earlier routine and start fresh. Much of what drew her to Liddell was his productions for singers with high Country credibility, including Miranda Lambert and Liddell’s wife Lee Ann Womack.

Once on-board, he persuaded her to bring Wooten in as well, partly because of his extensive hands-on engineering background.

“With Kellie, part of our goal was: How do we start over?

How can we do some work that she hasn’t done?” Liddell explained. “I’d heard a handful of her singles before. A couple of them were actually brilliant.

But she felt they were not her.

At that point, you just want to get her in the right situation and the right room where she felt real comfortable. Then we went with our gut.”

They also encouraged Pickler to dig down and write some new material that expressed what she wanted to say. “You don’t think, ‘Somebody’s going to bring me 10 songs that sound like hits. I’ll show up at the studio and sing them.’

That’s karaoke. She wanted to become more invested in what she was singing, and that entailed sitting down and writing with some people. Kellie would say, ‘Well, I’m not much of a writer,’ and she might see it as a wasted day if she didn’t come out with a No. 1 hit. But I disagreed with her. She’s learning that she is a writer and she’s getting invested in a career in a way that other people had done from the beginning.”

Liddell stayed just as involved in the tracking as in the album’s early creative stages. “Frank pushed me, he pushed Kellie and the band,” said Wooten.

“There are things on this record I would never have thought of doing. One of my favourite things was a track called ‘Arm Candy’ (Pickler and Natalie Hemby, available exclusively on iTunes). We were cutting the track. It was feeling good.

And Frank runs into the tracking room in the middle of the take and yells, ‘Stop! Everyone out except for bass and drums!’

Everyone was kind of shocked.

But then, as we were listening back, we heard this amazing beat and bass part being laid down, which totally changed the sentiment of the song in a way I don’t think any guy in the room would have come up with.

The rest of the band didn’t even play on it; they actually ended up singing kind of a doo-wop background part, with upright bass, drums, and some percussion. It wouldn’t have happened if Frank hadn’t felt that we could get something better.”

“To be completely honest with you, I didn’t know the artist in me until I met Frank and Luke,” Pickler said. “They pointed out things in me I didn’t know I had.

They saw it, but I didn’t.”

What they saw, and what 100 Proof uncovers, is the core of Kellie Pickler’s creative identity.

The producers encouraged her self-discovery, whether by setting up and lighting candles around her as she recorded or bringing the musicians into a circle in the studio to track with her. “We cut in the old RCA Studio A, which is now Ben Folds’ studio,” Wooten said. “They don’t have isolation for each guy. Kellie was literally about 25 feet in front of the drums.

I’d never cut that way, but once again that was something Frank wanted to try. It turned out for

the best.”

“We were in a big circle in the big room,” Pickler remembered.

“And before we started, I’d go: All right everyone, close your eyes. I want you to think about, if this was the last place you would ever be playing, what stage would it be on? Whatever it is, just close your eyes and let’s all go to that place and play.”

Pickler’s eyes were closed as she spoke, perhaps herself going to wherever she was when they cut ‘Unlock That Honky Tonk’ (Pickler and Satcher), declaiming over a stomping, banjo-studded beat, “Don’t tell me Country’s gone, ’cause I’m ’bout to tie some on!”

“I want to sell records,” she said, eyes now open, her voice self-assured. “But if I’m going to sell anything at this point, I don’t want them to be one-hit wonders, you know? Not just a fad for this generation because it’s hip and cool and right now. I want for somebody to sing one of my songs in the honky-tonks on Broadway in 50 years, like they do Loretta Lynn.”

“We’re in a time today where you can’t afford to not be played on the radio,” she continued.

“So most people go into the studio and the first thing is, ‘OK, how are we going to get this on the radio?’ Right there, you’re not making your record.

You’re making somebody else’s record. That’s not why I’m here.

I mean, ultimately I want to be on the radio, of course, but this record, these songs, and the production come from a real place. And regardless if it sells a million copies or one copy, I’m happy with how this album turned out. Because my music is my life.”

Happiness And Trust: The Correlation People’s happiness and mood affects how trusting they are of others, writes Jeff Grabmeier…

It seems to make perfect sense: happy people are trusting people. But a new study suggests that, in some instances, people may actually be less trusting of others when they are in a pleasant mood.

“A person’s mood may determine how much they rely on subtle, or not so subtle, cues when evaluating whether to trust someone,” said Robert Lount, author of the study and Assistant Professor of Management and HR at Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business.

In five separate experiments, Lount found that people in a positive mood were more likely than those in a neutral mood to follow

cues or stereotypes when determining whether they should trust someone. If you’re predisposed to trust a stranger because he belongs to the same club as you or he has a “trustworthy” face, a happy mood makes you even more likely to trust him. But if you’re predisposed to not trust him, a positive mood will make you even less trusting than normal.

“I think the assumption is that if you make someone happy, they’re going to be more likely to trust you. But that only works if they are already predisposed to trust you,” Lount said. “If you’re a professional meeting new clients, you may think that if you buy them a nice lunch and make them happy, you’re building trust. But that can

actually backfire if the client has some reason to be suspicious of you.”

All five experiments involved undergraduate students who took part in various scenarios in which they were put into positive or neutral moods, and were then given the opportunity to show trust or distrust toward a stranger.

In one study participants were asked to write one of two short essays. Some wrote about an experience that made them happy while others wrote about what they did in a typical day.

Those writing tasks were previously shown to put people in a happy or neutral mood. The participants were then shown a picture of a person and asked a variety of questions designed to find

out how much they would trust him. For example, one question asked how likely the participants thought it would be that the person would intentionally misrepresent their point of view to others.

All the pictures were created by a software program that made the faces appear trustworthy or untrustworthy to most people. A trustworthy person had a round face, round eyes, and was cleanshaven. An untrustworthy person had a narrow face, narrow eyes, and facial hair.

The results were striking: participants in a positive mood evaluated the person with the trustworthy features as more trustworthy than did those in a neutral mood.

Conversely, the happy people were less trusting of the person with untrustworthy features than were those in the neutral mood. “For those in a good mood, it all depended on the cues that

the pictured person gave that suggested whether he was trustworthy or not,” Lount said.

they were shown pictures of untrustworthy faces and asked to rate how trustworthy each face looked.

But why would happy people rely more on stereotypes and cues to evaluate a person’s trustworthiness? Research suggests the answer relies on motivation, Lount said. “When you’re happy, you’re less motivated to carefully process information,” he said. “You feel like everything is going OK, so there’s no reason to search out new information.

You can rely on your previous expectations to guide you through a situation.”

In this case, people in a neutral mood responded much as did the happy people in the previous experiments they rated untrustworthy faces as even more untrustworthy.

“In this experiment, people’s minds were busy trying to remember the number so they processed information differently than they normally did,” Lount said. “They relied more on the cues, just like happy people did.”

Another one of the experiments provided evidence for that theory.

In this experiment, the participants were put in a happy or neutral mood. They were then asked to memorize a nine-digit number that they would be asked to repeat in a few minutes. Then,

Lount said people aren’t aware of this process and don’t even know how their mood is affecting how they evaluate others. “You need to be careful, especially when you’re happy. You should ask yourself how your mood might be affecting your willingness to trust or distrust another person.”

2. Know Your Values What do you value most?

Make a list of your top five values. Some examples are security, freedom, family, spiritual development, learning, etc. As you set your goals, check them against your values. If the goal doesn’t align with any of your top five values, you should reconsider it or revise it.

3. Know Your Needs Unmet needs can keep you from living authentically. Take

care of yourself. Do you have a need to be acknowledged, to be right, to be in control, or to be loved? There are so many people who live their lives without realizing their dreams, and most of them end up being stressed or depressed. List your top four needs and get them met before it’s too late!

4. Know Your Passions You know who you are and what you truly enjoy in life.

Obstacles like doubt and lack of enthusiasm will only hinder you, but will not derail your chance to become the person you ought to be.

Express yourself and honour the people who inspired you to become the person you are or want to be.

5. Live From The Inside Out Increase your awareness and your inner wisdom by regularly reflecting in silence.

Commune with nature.

Breathe deeply to quieten your distracted mind. For most city slickers it’s hard to even find the peace and quiet we want even in our

own homes. Sit in a dimly lit room and play some classical music; there’s sound yes, but music does soothe the savage beast.

6. Honour Your Strengths What are your positive traits?

What special talents do you have? List three - if you get stuck, ask those closest to you to help identify these.

Are you imaginative, witty, or good with your hands?

Find ways to express your authentic self through your strengths. You can increase your self-confidence when you can share what you know with others.

7. Serve Others When you live authentically, you may find that you develop an interconnected sense of being. When you’re true to who you are, living your purpose, and giving of your talents to the world around you, you give back in service what you came to share with others -your spirit, your essence. The reward for sharing your gift with those close to you is indeed

When we hold similar values, expectations, and attitudes with our partner, we generally know what to expect and we’re less likely to negotiate and compromise on every minute element of the relationship, said Madsen, who also teaches a course that discusses mate selection.

That’s not to say that opposites can’t attract, but major, significant differences have the potential to become a breeding ground for

disagreements, unmet expectations, and additional difficulties.

“There’s still the excitement of ‘Oh, they’re different’, but in the long run you have to ask yourself the question: Is that really going to be that beneficial for you? Do you have the communication skills to be able to work through those differences?” Madsen said.

She pointed to a growing number of studies that show similarities in values and attitudes are associated with increased marital satisfaction and can make things easier for a couple long-term.

In some ways, opposites can attract in a healthy way. Madsen said it can be exciting to be with a partner who encourages exploration of new things and unfamiliar experiences. But all too often opposites attract for unhealthy reasons.

“A lot of times when opposites attract it’s because somebody feels there’s a lack in their life, or there’s a hole that they try to fill with a person

who is an opposite,” Madsen said. “Sometimes that attraction can be ‘I am missing in this area, and you’re really good in this area. Put us together and we’re a perfect whole.’ But it can actually often create more difficulties.”

For example, an introverted person may be attracted to an outgoing person. The introvert may think the outgoing person will help them become more outgoing, but in the end, when the two go out, the introverted person may feel more isolated and ignored from the partner. That can leave both people frustrated.

Choosing a partner involves the filter theory of mate selection, in which an individual sorts out potential mates, Madsen said. Often, the person eliminates opposite mates. For instance, someone who is hardworking isn’t likely to look for a partner who’s a slacker. An honest person doesn’t want a lying partner. It’s for this reason that opposites may not even meet in the first place. It’s easier to find a

When it comes to love, it might not be best for Capulets and Montagues to mingle and marry.

That’s because while opposites can attract, they may not be best for each other, according to Chelsea Madsen, a Kansas State University instructor of family studies and human services and a licensed marriage and family therapist. People are typically attracted to someone who loves what they love, she said. “We tend to search for someone who is similar to us because it’s comfortable and familiar.

It’s not foreign to us,” Madsen said.

Two people who like golf are more likely to meet each other than a person who dislikes sports and another who loves sports.

“It’s best to know what you desire in a partner and work on those characteristics in yourself,” Madsen said; noting that if you want

someone who is honest, work on being honest.

Often, the characteristics we look for in a partner are the characteristics we desire in ourselves. When we improve ourselves and set standards for the qualities that are important to us, we’re more likely to have successful relationships with others, whether they be similar or opposite.

While there will be qualities that really don’t matter to you or the relationship satisfaction, it’s most important to find a partner who is similar in qualities that are the most important to you.

“Nothing is definitive,” Madsen said. “I’ve seen happy similar couples and happy opposite couples.

Couples work in all different ways.”

Humans have long been advised to “know thyself”, but new research suggests we may not know ourselves as well as we think we do - it seems friends, and even strangers, are better barometers of our personality…

Since at least the days of Socrates, humans have been advised to “know thyself.” And through all the years, many, including many personality and social psychologists, have believed the individual is the best judge of his or her own personality.

Now a psychologist at Washington University in St. Louis has shown that we’re not the know-it-alls that we think we are. Simine Vazire, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychology in Arts & Sciences, has found that the individual is more accurate in assessing one’s own internal, or neurotic traits such as anxiety, while friends are better barometers of intellectrelated traits such as intelligence and creativity, and even strangers are equally adept as our friends and ourselves at spotting

the extrovert in us all, a psychology domain known as extroversion.

“I think that it’s important to really question this knee-jerk reaction that we are our own best experts,” Vazire says.

“Personality is not who you think you are; it’s who you are. Some people think by definition that we are the experts on our personality because we get to write the story, but personality is not the story, it’s the reality. So, you do get to write your own story about how you think you are and what you tell people about yourself, but there still is reality out there, and, guess what? Other people are going to see the reality, regardless of what story you believe.”

Personality, Vazire says, is pervasive in many things that we do - clothing choice, bedroom arrangement,

and website and Facebook profiles, for example.

“Everything you touch you leave a mark of your personality,” she says. “You leave traces unintentionally.

You give off hints of your personality that you don’t even see yourself.”

Personality is composed of the underlying traits that drive behaviour, Vazire says. The model she developed is called the Self-Other Knowledge Asymmetry (SOKA) model.

To test it, she called upon 165 volunteers who were given a number of different tasks. To obtain an objective measure of behaviour, they took an IQ test; they all participated in a leaderless group discussion to see who emerged as the take-charge individual, and they took a Trier social stress test in which trained experimenters with faux stern demeanours

filmed participants in a narrow, cramped room, as they gave a two-minute public speaking exhibition on the topic of what I like and don’t like about my body - a sweat-inducer for many. Each participant also graded group members and him or herself on a 40-trait personality rating form.

“They” Know Thyself Vazire’s model correctly predicted that self-ratings would be more accurate for internal things such as thoughts, feelings, sadness, and anxiety than the ratings of friends and strangers.

“You probably know pretty well your anxiety level, whereas others might not be in the position to judge that because, after all, you can mask your inner feelings,” Vazire says. “Others, though, are often better than the self in things that deal with overt behaviour.”

The self has difficulty in accurately judging itself in areas that are desirable or undesirable, what she calls evaluative traits.

Intelligence, attractiveness, and creativity are hard for the self to judge objectively

because “there’s so much at stake, meaning your life is going to be very different if you’re intelligent or not, attractive or not. Everybody wants to be seen as intelligent and attractive, but we’re not going to accurately judge these desirable traits in ourselves.”

The self is better at judging friends’ intelligence than its own “because it’s not that threatening to us to admit that our friends aren’t brilliant, but it’s more threatening to admit to ourselves that we’re not brilliant,” she says.

Take attractiveness and your mirror. “We look in the mirror all the time, yet that’s not the same as looking at a photo of someone else,” Vazire says. “If we spent as much time looking at photos of others as we do ourselves, we’d form a much more confident and clear impression of the other’s attractiveness than we would have of our own. Yet, after looking in the mirror for five minutes, we’re still left wondering, ‘Am I attractive or not?’ And still have no clue!”

For some personality traits, she says we miss the point if we look at thoughts and feelings and ignore the behaviour.

Bullies, for instance, fit the SOKA model, because their thoughts and feelings tell them they’re insecure and want to be liked and admired, which isn’t a horrible, nasty notion. They can’t see their behaviour as nasty and horrible, though, because their thoughts obscure their actions.

Similarly, if you think that you’re warm and friendly and your friends and family say you don’t come across that way, you should pay more attention to your behaviours. “I believe I’ve presented evidence that should make people think twice,” Vazire says. “On average, the people who know you best know you as well as you know yourself, no better, no worse than you. More importantly, there are things that both you know that they don’t know, and things that they know that you don’t know, and those lead to very interesting experiences and disagreements.”

These days, many employers are foregoing traditional face-toface or telephone interviews in favour of Skype conversations.

Unlike phone interviews, Skype allows employers to have a face-to-face conversation without worrying about travel time, housing arrangements, or meals for the interviewee - so say Kathryn Sue Young and Howard Travis in their new book, Business and Professional Communication: A Practical Guide to Workplace Effectiveness.

Young is professor and chair of the Department of Communication at Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pa. Travis is professor emeritus of communication at Mansfield.

Skype interviews can be conducted anytime, anywhere, so employers can get through the interview process and quickly come to a hiring decision. “The visual interview via computer may seem awkward to individuals over the age of 50, but to the socialnetworking generation, it is a natural progression,” Young says.

Still, this method of interviewing is fairly new, and those who are talking with an employer via video chat for the first time should take certain elements into consideration. It’s important to pay attention to body

language while video chatting, Young and Travis say. Things that would be normal in a faceto-face conversation, such as leaning slightly forward to show interest, can be awkward on screen.

It can be hard to gauge how relaxed your body language is when sitting in front of a computer. Young advises swivelling your chair toward the centre of the computer screen and then turning your head back toward the camera. Sit tall, but not at a distance so that the first three buttons on your shirt are visible. Doing a test run with a friend can be helpful, so you can check colour, sound, and expressions. And don’t walk in front of the camera!

“I did a group Skype interview a few days ago and one of my colleagues walked in front of the computer screen unthinkingly giving me an unnecessary view of anatomy,” comments Young.

“Definitely something to be aware of.”

Don’t forget about the background either, Young advises. Dogs barking or other household noises can be distracting to the interviewer.

Sitting in a clean, tidy room is important, too - tiny college dorm rooms or your own living or bedrooms tend to get messy, so straightening up first is a must. Otherwise, a potential employer may perceive you

as unorganized, uncaring, and unprofessional.

Lighting should also be considered. Sitting in front of a bright light will make your face dark, so sit in a well-lit room, Travis and Young advise.

Candidates should also pay attention to their clothes.

Patterns often look strange onscreen, so solid colours work best when video chatting.

While all of these things should be considered when preparing for a Skype interview, it’s best to constantly be prepared should an interviewer come calling. “Be aware that with the Skype application available

on cell phones, you could be expected to interview at anytime and anywhere,” Travis says.

“Think about the implications for looking your best at all times.”

Heeding The Headache Decipher your headache’s clues to determine the most effective treatment options…

Tension headaches, otherwise known as stress headaches, are the most common among adults.

Symptoms include mild to moderate pain across the forehead or on the sides and back of the head and neck. This headache is often accompanied by a feeling of pressure or tightness. A wide range of factors such as stress, fatigue, anxiety, hunger, or poor posture can trigger tension headaches. The most effective way to treat a tension headache is to take an over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever and rest until the symptoms subside.

Migraine headache symptoms may involve moderate to severe

pain. Patients who have sensitivity to light and sound during an attack may also experience nausea and dizziness. Migraine pain is often described as pounding or throbbing and is usually one-sided, lasting between four hours up to three days. Unfortunately for migraine sufferers, these headaches are often hereditary and recurring. An OTC analgesic combination can be used as a firstline treatment, but this is most effective when used at or near the onset of a headache, or in conjunction with a prescription medication indicated for the treatment of migraines.

Cluster headaches are another variation and are the least common. Cluster headaches occur more often in men, and happen several times a day, at the same time of day for a period of time lasting from five minutes to an hour.

These headaches can cycle for up to a month or longer.

This intense pain can be described as a burning or piercing feeling in or around the eye on one side of the head. The patient may also experience eyelid swelling, redness, and tearing on one side. Those who suffer from cluster headaches often feel they can’t sit still and will pace during an attack. As with migraines,

there are specific medical treatments available to decrease the duration and severity of cluster headaches.

Sinus headaches occur when a person’s sinus passages become inflamed or clogged causing a feeling of pressure in the face. People often confuse tension or migraine headaches with sinus headaches as the symptoms overlap. A key difference is that these headaches are usually accompanied by other sinus-related symptoms such as stuffiness, fever, cough, and sore throat. To treat a sinus headache, OTC pain relievers can be used to decrease the pain, while an OTC decongestant can help reduce nasal passage swelling.

“There are a number of very effective over-thecounter first-line treatments available to address the symptoms of headaches,” says Dr. Gary Ruoff, a physician certified in headache management and the author of numerous articles on headaches and pain management. “In fact, I recommend many of the ‘store-brand’ pain relievers sold at leading retailers and pharmacies, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Tip #1: Find the right mascara.

Mascaras come in two formulas: water-soluble and waterproof. Water-soluble mascaras are lighter and easier to remove, but won’t hold up to extreme humidity.

If you are an athlete, live in a humid climate, or are prone to watery eyes, opt for the waterproof alternative.

Tip #2: Choose a colour to compliment your complexion.

Black mascara isn’t for everyone. If your skin is fair or has yellow undertones, or if you have light hair such as blonde or red, you may want to try brown mascara for a more natural look.

Tip #3: Apply powder under the eye.

Heavy creams and oils such as those found in moisturizers and concealers will attract the pigment in

mascaras, causing them to smear. To avoid unsightly under-eye circles, dust a thin layer of loose or pressed powder under the eye to absorb any excess moisture.

Tip #4: Line your eyes.

Using a coordinating shade of eyeliner, line the eyelid at the lash base. This will open the eye and define its shape and give the appearance of fuller lashes.

Tip #5: Curl your lashes.

To give straight lashes more volume, curl them using an eyelash curler. To do it: clamp the lashes near the root and hold for 20-30 seconds. If you’re curling your lashes after applying mascara, wait until they are dry. Wet lashes will stick to the trough pads, leading to follicle damage or loss.

Tip #6: Clean the brush.

Using a clean tissue, wipe any excess mascara from the wand. This will rid the brush of any dried-on clumps, resulting in a smooth, even coat.

Tip #7: Coat the full lash.

Applying mascara only to the bottom of your eyelashes will make them heavy, causing them to droop. Instead, apply an even coat to both the tops and bottoms of your lashes starting at the base and

wiggling the brush from side to side as you move to the tip coating the full lash.

Tip #8: Mix and match.

For a dramatic look, apply a coat of volumizing mascara followed by a coat of lengthening mascara on the tips. For best results, apply the second coat while lashes are still wet. Applying wet mascara to dry mascara will coat the lashes unevenly causing clumps.

Tip #9: Choose the right brush.

Mascara brushes come in an array of shapes and sizes and are often as unique as their respective product formulas. Thick brushes with several narrowly spaced bristles are best for full-coverage or thickening mascaras, while longer brushes with bristles set farther apart are best to lengthen and separate.

Brushes with tapered ends are best to paint the lashes at the corner of the eye.

Tip #10: Removing mascara.

Whatever your choice of mascara, removing it shouldn’t be difficult. Apply a small amount of eye-makeup remover to each eye and gently wipe away using a warm, damp cloth until the product is dissolved. Avoid

Jihan, Riyadh Whether it’s a few extra hairs in the sink or a completely bare scalp, baldness is a common issue for many people - not just men. Balding generally refers to hair loss from your scalp, usually caused by genetics, environment, various medications, or an underlying medical condition. It’s often characterized with a receding hairline and thinning crown near the temples and mid-anterior scalp.

The word ‘alopecia’ is the medical term for hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia, a typical pattern of male baldness beginning at the hairline and gradually receding, is the most common form of hair loss, accounting for more than 95% of the cases in men.

A quarter of those men start seeing signs of hair loss before they reach 21. But there are also several hundred diseases that include hair loss as a primary symptom. By age 35, two-thirds of men will experience some degree of noticeable hair loss, and by age 50, about 85% of men will have significantly thinning hair.

Most people dealing with baldness have hair follicles with an inherited or genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative or by-product of testosterone.

The Winding City: Australia’s Blue Mountains Where in the world can you find a city 43 miles long with spectacular mountain views, plant life dating back to prehistoric times, and a charming cosmopolitan environment? The answer is in Australia, in the city of the Blue Mountains that stretches from Glenbrook at the foot of the mountain range to Katoomba right at the top.

The city consists of 26 towns all coming under the local government umbrella of the Blue Mountains City Council. This body meets at a building in Katoomba known locally as the ‘Pink Palace’ due to its startling colour.

Scientists discovered the prehistoric Wollemi Pine in 1994. The genus is more than 150 million years old, one of the last plant remnants from the time of the dinosaurs! As study continues on the Wollemi Pine, it has also been cultivated and made available commercially to plant nurseries.

However, the site of the original pines remains a secret so that there is no unwanted invasion of the area.

Each of these small towns, or more properly suburbs, has its own distinct character and attractions. You can catch a train from Sydney Central Station, 47 miles away from the foot of the Blue Mountains on Australia’s east coast, and travel by direct line into the Blue Mountains stopping at every little town. This is a busy commuter run on weekdays for those who live in the Blue Mountains but work in Sydney or its suburbs.

How can such a natural treasure survive in a city?

To understand how this can happen, you need to understand the nature of the Blue Mountains, how it brings together inaccessible and remote wilderness and urban development in one of the world’s most unique tourist destinations. The Blue Mountains separates the eastern seaboard from the inland plains of New South Wales. The road that connects Sydney, the Mountains, and the west is called the Great Western Highway. Like the railway line, it runs through each of the townships in the city.

In spite of the high commuter population, business is flourishing in the Blue Mountains. The area is noted for its outstanding tourist accommodation and hospitality; it boasts fine accommodation such as Lillianfels and the romantically named Cloudlands. The Blue Mountains is also a World Heritage Listed Site, its national parks providing some of the most untouched natural beauty in the world. So untouched are some of its remote areas that a prehistoric tree can flourish there in isolation.

Pretzel Crusted Chicken Ingredients: 4 3 2 1 ¼

Tbsp unsalted butter Cups Everything Pretzel Crisps, crushed Large eggs, whisked Lb chicken breast, sliced into 1 ½ inch rounds Cup all-purpose flour

Serves 4 For The Gravy: 4 3 3 1

Tbsp unsalted butter Tbsp all-purpose flour Tbsp maple syrup Cup whole milk

1. Preheat oven to 220°C. 2. Line a baking dish with foil and spray with non-stick spray and set aside.

3. Place flour in a shallow bowl.

4. Place eggs in a separate shallow bowl.

5. Spread crushed Pretzel Crisps on a rimmed plate.

6. Working with one chicken breast at a time, coat chicken in flour, dip into eggs and then press into pretzels. Repeat until all chicken breasts have been coated.

7. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

8. Add four to five chicken breasts at a time, cooking until lightly browned, about 2 minutes on each side.

9. Transfer browned chicken breasts to prepared baking dish. Repeat until all breasts have been browned.

10. Place chicken breasts in the oven and bake until cooked through, or until internal temperature reaches 60°C, about 8 minutes.

11. Let them rest for 5 minutes after baking.

12. While chicken is in the oven, melt butter over medium-high heat in the skillet used to cook the chicken.

13. Whisk in flour, scrapping the edges to include any of the browned chicken bits in the pan.

14. Stir continually with a wire whisk until the flour has thickened and started to brown, about 3 minutes.

15. Pour in maple syrup and ½ cup of milk, continually whisking. After about 30 seconds, gravy should start to thicken again.

16. Add remaining ½ cup of milk and whisk until combined.

17. Remove gravy from heat and serve drizzled on top of chicken breasts.

Swap out breadcrumbs for thin pretzel crackers and coat prior to your guests’ arrival.

Oz bag Dark Chocolate & Peppermint Pretzel Crisps Cups whole milk Packages (3.9 oz) chocolate instant pudding Box fudge brownie mix Tub (11 oz) whipped topping, divided Crushed peppermint, for garnish

Method: 1. Heat oven to 180°C (165°C for dark or non-stick pan).

2. Grease pan with butter or non-stick spray.

3. In a medium bowl, mix brownies as directed for fudge brownies, using water, oil, and eggs. Bake as directed.

4. Cool completely, about 1 hour.

5. Once brownies are cooled, cut into 1-inch cubes and set aside.

6. In a medium bowl, beat milk and pudding mixes with whisk for 2 minutes, or until thickened.

7. Stir in 1 cup whipped topping.

8. Place ½ of brownie cubes in 2-qt. bowl.

9. Top with a layer of Dark Chocolate & Peppermint Pretzel Crisps, followed by half of the pudding mixture and another layer of whipped topping and repeat for all the layers.

10. Sprinkle the top with crushed peppermint and one whole Pretzel Crisps.

11. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Leave The Office Attire For The Office: Some evenings, getting out of the office in time for happy hour can seem like a lofty goal, but by keeping the right tools on hand and making a few simple swaps, modern beauties can effortlessly breeze into the post-work social scene. “I like to keep a stash of POND’S Wet Cleansing Towelettes at my desk to quickly remove and refresh my makeup and reapply before stepping out,” says Post. “A bold lip or classic smoky eye is an easy way to make a statement. Trade pumps for a bright stiletto and ditch the cardigan for the sleeveless top under it.

to put the best foot forward.”

“Unless seated, it’s crucial to pick either food or drink, but not both simultaneously,” advises Post. “Not only could juggling a plate and a wine glass lead to an embarrassing accident, it also prevents shaking hands with new acquaintances.”

Demonstrate Social (Media) Graces: Every modern woman has to deal with a bad day or unanticipated incident from time to time - long lines, flight delays, fashion mishaps - but no one likes a complainer. Post says, “Always keep it positive on social media. With so many professional contacts now having access to coworkers’ personal pages, it’s smart to resist the urge to vent in public. Confide in a close friend instead.”
