The Past Year The Dazzle-ing people and events that have graced our covers over the last Dazzle Year (May 12May 13)‌
June 2012: For our Father’s Day Special we paid tribute to the timeless celebrity dadmoments of the decade in Star Dads: Timeless Moments. For the cover, we chose a mesmerising father-son moment of Kirk and Michael Douglas in 2003 at the LA premiere of their movie It Runs In The Family - the moment that epitomises love, appreciation, and father-son bonding; nonetheless, all the other timeless moments of celebrity dads in our cover compilation story also radiated that same love.

March 2013: For our Mother’s Day Special we interviewed the successful Donna Benton, a caring mother and an inspirational businesswoman. She is the founder and CEO of the Entertainer, a Dubai-based international company that provides two-for-one incentive vouchers for dining, leisure, beauty, entertainment, and hotel accommodation across the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Europe. What started off 12 years ago with one Entertainer voucher book in Dubai, turned now into 21 different books in 14 destinations.
April 2013 For he official onset of spring, we focused on the season’s beauty, style, and trends. Our beauty cover, L’Oreal’s S/S 13 Glamour, featured their latest INOA collection - Ombrés Nature, which Nathan Walker contributed to with his vision of great hair colour. The collection revisited the ‘La Maison’ codes through a fresh and modern interpretation of Paris. Honouring the prêta-porter side of the Maison, the Ombrés Nature stylists created hair that’s both wearable and inspiring, yet is so de-coiffed that it requires the touch of a hairdresser. It aligned itself with the season’s fashion trends and positioned Ombré hair as the perfect fashion accessory.

Mind & Soul - June 2012
: s n o i t o N e v i C reat s r u o Y h s a e l n U Creativity is an important ingredient in the quality of your life, success, and general well being, although many don’t give it much thought. However, you can easily unleash your creative powers…
People seem to have the misconception that only a select few are able to unleash a steady flow of creative genius. That’s not true at all. The fact is, creativity is very much like a muscle that needs to be exercised in order to consistently give out great results. If you don’t practice harnessing creative thinking, this skill will very much atrophy into inexistence. But keep working and this skill will soon come to you in a snap. So how do you unleash your creative thinking? Here’s how: Become a human leech. No, we’re not talking about just sucking the blood out of every living being available, we’re saying that you should take in as much knowledge and learning as you can find. Read everything available,
18
MAY 2013
good and bad, and keep your mind open to the infinite possibilities of the universe. The more you know, the more you’ll want to know, and the more your faculty of wonder will be exercised. Prepare to be amazed at little facts that add a bit of colour into your life. Focus on a creative activity everyday. Yes, it’s an effort. Even doodling is a creative activity. Don’t let anything hinder you. Mindlessness may be a creative activity, but for people who are just starting out to unleash a little bit of creative thinking in their lives, it is helpful and encouraging to have concrete evidence, that, “hey, what I’m doing is getting somewhere.” So why don’t you try it. Practice drawing for a couple of minutes each
day. Bring out your old camera and start snapping photos like crazy. Keep a journal and make a point to write in it religiously. Another cool idea is to write by describing something with your five senses. Try to avoid vague adjectives like marvellous, amazing, and delicious. Before you know it, you’ll have built yourself a tiny portfolio, and you’ll be amazed at the growth you’ve undertaken after amassing all those works of art. Who knows, you might actually take to liking those things you do everyday. Pretty soon those things will become a part of you and you’ll be addicted to these creative exercises. Think out of the box - or don’t. Sometimes, constraints are actually
a good thing. Limitations discipline you to work within your means. It enables you to be more resourceful. Creative freedom is great, but limitations enforce discipline. Try something new everyday and let your experiences broaden your perspective. Explore a new district in your neighbourhood. Spend an afternoon in a museum to which you’ve never been before. Chat up someone on the bus. Open up to the people around you. As you thrust yourself out of your comfort zone more and more each day, your sense of adventure grows and so does your zest for life. Think about it. When was the last time you did something for the first time? If it’s been a while, you’ve been missing out on a whole lot of
experiences that could’ve added to your growth emotionally, mentally, physically, or spiritually. Why don’t you try bungee jumping today? Not only will you learn, but you will also have plenty of stories to share, enabling you to practice your storytelling skills and making you the life of the party. Embrace insanity No, not to the point of practically admitting yourself into the mental ward. As John Russell once said, “Sanity calms, but madness is more interesting.” Exactly! Every creative thought was once deemed insanity by other “normal” people at one time or another. Luckily, that didn’t stop the creative geniuses from standing by them. The thing is, sanity or being normal confines people to think, well, normally,
with limits. Creativity is essentially breaking through barriers. Yes, this includes the bizarre and the downright strange. I’m not saying that you yourself should develop a creative personality. That might go haywire like George Washington, who often rode into battle naked, or James Joyce, who wrote ‘Dubliners’ with beetle juice for an intense fear of ink, or Albert Einstein, who thought his cat was a spy sent by his rival (or his arch nemesis). It’s important that your creativity doesn’t get you detached from the real world completely. You just have to start thinking beyond your limits, and pretty soon you’ll be living a life full of interesting adventures. Unleashing your creative thinking will bring about a whole new zest for living your life.

Personality - March 2013
Bumpy Pride Many expecting mothers secretly struggle with insecurity due to the many changes their bodies go through during pregnancy. While feeling insecure is normal, it also makes pregnancy less enjoyable. These practical and simple tips help women learn to love their changing silhouette and get more out of each trimester, writes S. Flannery…
If you feel anything but glowing during your pregnancy, don’t worry. Pregnancy isn’t always a smooth ride. Every time you look in the mirror, you see a new outline, and it’s not just your belly that’s changing. While some insecurity is natural during pregnancy, you should still have a chance to enjoy this unique time in your life. The following tips can help you approach all three trimesters with more confidence and acceptance of your new body: Find a Beauty Routine That Works for You For some women, giving up alcohol is easy, but giving up acne wash is heart-breaking. When you’re pregnant, certain skincare products can be dangerous to your unborn baby, including salicylic

acid and prescription acne medications. Since many women experience hormonal acne breakouts during the first trimester, research your options to find a safe, gentle wash designed for pregnant women. If your doctor recommends against your normal anti-aging creams and lotions, go natural with safe options such as coconut oil. Enlist Your Partner’s Support Fatigue, morning sickness, and other common complaints may put a damper on your love life. In addition, your partner might withdraw because he’s nervous about hurting the baby or feels unsure about your changing condition. Talk honestly about your worries and insecurities. Chances are, your partner still finds you beautiful, but make sure that he knows you need to hear it. If sex is too difficult or your doctor recommends against it, find other ways to connect romantically. An oldfashioned date night or taking time to cuddle can restore your sense of romance and boost your confidence. Start a Safe, Gentle Exercise Routine Always consult with a medical professional before continuing or starting an exercise
routine. However, for most women, low-impact exercise is safe and beneficial during pregnancy. Heading to the local pool, taking a brisk stroll around the neighbourhood, or looking into local prenatal yoga classes can brighten your mood and help you feel more connected with your body. Just stay well hydrated and stop if you experience pain. Invest in Chic Maternity Clothes The very phrase “maternity jeans” might make you feel dowdy. However, contemporary pregnant women don’t have to settle for muumuus. Squeezing yourself into your pre-pregnancy clothes feels like a triumph, but the cut of these clothes can actually hide your bump and emphasize all the wrong aspects of your changing body. Fashionable maternity clothes will help you look beautifully pregnant, not bulky. Don’t be afraid of more form-fitting maternity clothes, which highlight your bump in a flattering way. Stop Comparing Yourself to Other Women Women are often encouraged to compare themselves to other people, whether actresses, models, or next-

For some lucky women, pregnancy is the time when they feel the most beautiful. Pregnancy magazines show smiling models with picture-perfect baby bumps. Celebrities appear at events in gowns that highlight their changing silhouettes. While this focus on the beauty of pregnancy is positive in many ways, it also leaves some mothers feeling cheated as they struggle with insecurity.
door neighbours. Sadly, this trend doesn’t end during pregnancy, but you can make a conscious effort to put an end to this habit. You may know somebody who gained less weight than you during pregnancy, or you might know somebody who shows less quickly. However, your weight is only between you and your doctor or midwife. If you find yourself comparing your pregnant body to someone else’s, make a decision to stop and focus on your own unique, strong, and beautiful body. Find Support from Fellow Mothers Mothers, both new and veteran, can sympathize with your worries and reassure you that you’re not alone. It can make a world of difference to know you’re not the only one on the lunch date dealing with swollen ankles or multiplying stretch marks. If you don’t know many expecting or current mothers in your area, online forums and communities can be a strong source of support and knowledge. Finally, remember that not every pregnancy is the same. If you barely gained weight during your first pregnancy and enjoyed glowing skin and luscious locks, it might lower your confidence when your second pregnancy results in more weight gain than you expected. Take each pregnancy on its own terms, without unrealistic expectations. By remembering to appreciate your body’s ability to support life, pampering yourself, and being open to support, pregnancy can be a time of renewed strength and confidence that lasts well beyond your baby’s birth.

Do Opposites Attract? Therapist says it’s best to love someone who loves what you love…
When we hold similar values, expectations, and attitudes with our partner, we generally know what to expect and we’re less likely to negotiate and compromise on every minute element of the relationship, said Madsen, who also teaches a course that discusses mate selection. That’s not to say that opposites can’t attract, but major, significant differences have the potential to become a breeding ground for

disagreements, unmet expectations, and additional difficulties. “There’s still the excitement of ‘Oh, they’re different’, but in the long run you have to ask yourself the question: Is that really going to be that beneficial for you? Do you have the communication skills to be able to work through those differences?” Madsen said. She pointed to a growing number of studies that show similarities in values and attitudes are associated with increased marital satisfaction and can make things easier for a couple long-term. In some ways, opposites can attract in a healthy way. Madsen said it can be exciting to be with a partner who encourages exploration of new things and unfamiliar experiences. But all too often opposites attract for unhealthy reasons. “A lot of times when opposites attract it’s because somebody feels there’s a lack in their life, or there’s a hole that they try to fill with a person
who is an opposite,” Madsen said. “Sometimes that attraction can be ‘I am missing in this area, and you’re really good in this area. Put us together and we’re a perfect whole.’ But it can actually often create more difficulties.” For example, an introverted person may be attracted to an outgoing person. The introvert may think the outgoing person will help them become more outgoing, but in the end, when the two go out, the introverted person may feel more isolated and ignored from the partner. That can leave both people frustrated. Choosing a partner involves the filter theory of mate selection, in which an individual sorts out potential mates, Madsen said. Often, the person eliminates opposite mates. For instance, someone who is hardworking isn’t likely to look for a partner who’s a slacker. An honest person doesn’t want a lying partner. It’s for this reason that opposites may not even meet in the first place. It’s easier to find a

When it comes to love, it might not be best for Capulets and Montagues to mingle and marry. That’s because while opposites can attract, they may not be best for each other, according to Chelsea Madsen, a Kansas State University instructor of family studies and human services and a licensed marriage and family therapist. People are typically attracted to someone who loves what they love, she said. “We tend to search for someone who is similar to us because it’s comfortable and familiar. It’s not foreign to us,” Madsen said.
partner who has similar interests, Madsen said. Two people who like golf are more likely to meet each other than a person who dislikes sports and another who loves sports. “It’s best to know what you desire in a partner and work on those characteristics in yourself,” Madsen said; noting that if you want
someone who is honest, work on being honest. Often, the characteristics we look for in a partner are the characteristics we desire in ourselves. When we improve ourselves and set standards for the qualities that are important to us, we’re more likely to have successful relationships with others, whether they be similar or opposite.
While there will be qualities that really don’t matter to you or the relationship satisfaction, it’s most important to find a partner who is similar in qualities that are the most important to you. “Nothing is definitive,” Madsen said. “I’ve seen happy similar couples and happy opposite couples. Couples work in all different ways.”

Friendships - July-September 2012
Prehistoric Facebook: An Evolutionarily Essential! Ancient humans may not have had the luxury of updating their Facebook status, but a recent study suggests that social networks were nevertheless an essential component of their lives, writes Jake Miller, Harvard Medical School…
“The astonishing thing is that ancient human social networks so very much resemble what we see today,” said Nicholas Christakis, Professor Of Medical Sociology And Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Professor Of Sociology in the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and senior author on the study. “From the time we were around campfires and had words floating through the air, to today when we have digital packets floating through the ether, we’ve made networks of basically the same kind.” “We found that what modern people are doing with online social networks is what we’ve always done - not just before Facebook, but before agriculture,” said study co-author James Fowler, Professor Of Political Science And Medical

Genetics at the University of California, San Diego, who, with Christakis, has authored a number of seminal studies of human social networks. Roots Of Altruism The natural world, red in tooth and claw, has a gentle side. While individuals compete fiercely to ensure the survival of their race, a few animals, including humans, also cooperate and act selflessly. Researchers have wondered if social networks are a product of modern lifestyles, or if they could have emerged under the kind of conditions that our distant ancestors faced. This question has been challenging for classic evolutionary theory to explain neatly. For cooperation to arise, a selfless act, like sharing food with a non-relative, must have a net benefit for the sharers. Otherwise, purely self-serving individuals would outcompete and eventually replace the selfless. All theoretical explanations for the evolution of cooperation - kin selection, reciprocal altruism, group selection - rely on the existence of some system that allows cooperators to group together with other individuals who tend to share. “If you can get co-operators to cluster together in social space,
cooperation can evolve,” said Coren Apicella, a post-doctoral research fellow in Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School and first author on the paper. “Social networks allow this to happen.” While it’s not possible to quiz our distant ancestors about their friendships or habits of sharing and collaborating, a team of researchers from Harvard Medical School, UC San Diego and the University of Cambridge have characterized the structure of social networks among the Hadza, an ethnic group in the Lake Eyasi region of Tanzania, one of the last surviving groups of hunter gathers; there are less than 1,000 Hadza left who live the traditional way. Getting Connected In order to construct a social network, Apicella and her colleagues took a dual approach. First, they asked Hadza adults to identify individuals they would prefer to live with in their next encampment. Second, they gave each adult three straws of honey and were told they could give these straws as gifts to anyone in their camp. This generated 1,263 campmate ties and 426 gift ties. In a separate activity, the researchers measured levels of cooperation by giving the Hadza additional honey straws that they could either keep for themselves or donate to the group.
Article Source: University of California, San Diego/Newswise.
A recent study suggested that social networks were an essential component of our ancestors’ lives. The study’s findings describe elements of social network structures that may have been present early in human history, suggesting how our ancestors may have formed ties with both kin and non-kin based on shared attributes, including the tendency to cooperate. According to the paper, social networks likely contributed to the evolution of cooperation.
When the networks were mapped and analysed, the researchers found that cooperators and non-co-operators formed distinct clusters. The researchers also measured the connectedness of people with similar height, age, handgrip strength, etc., and other characteristics such as food preference. They also analysed the transitivity of friendship - the likelihood that one’s friends are friends with one another, and other network properties. The structure and dynamics of the Hadza hunter-gatherer social networks were essentially indistinguishable from existing social network data drawn from modern communities. “We turned the data over lots of different ways,” said Fowler. “We looked at over a dozen measures that social network analysts use to compare networks and pretty much, the Hadza are just like us.” “Human beings are unusual among species in the extent to which we form long-term, nonreproductive unions with other members of our species,” said Christakis. “In other words, not only do we have sex, but we also have friends.” Previous work by Christakis and Fowler, who are co-authors of the book ‘Connected’, has shown that our experience of the world depends on where we find ourselves within social networks. Particular studies have found that networks influence a surprising variety of lifestyle and health factors such as how prone you are to obesity, smoking cessation, and even happiness. For the researchers, the Hadza offer strong evidence that social networks are a truly ancient, perhaps integral part of the human story!

Your SMCV: V C w e The N You may have spent hours making sure you’re using just the right action verbs in your resume, and crafted the perfect cover letter to catch the attention of your future employer, but if you haven’t spent the time to clean up what’s on your Facebook page, all that work could be for naught. Not only do social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn allow you to connect and network as you search for a job, but they give you a platform to sell yourself, or shame yourself, to future employers. “Today, making sure you’re buttoned up on your social media sites is as important as drafting a perfect resume and cover letter,” says Phil Schmitt, Westwood College - Du Page faculty member who teaches a class on preparing students for their job searches. “It’s not uncommon for a prospective employer to go to your Facebook page during the review process. I have even heard of employers asking interviewees to pull up their Facebook pages while in an interview.” Your social media sites

can be used for good and evil when it comes to job seeking. On the positive side, you can position yourself as an expert in your field and connect yourself with others who may be able to help you get a job. On the negative side, an offensive rant, racy photograph, or even an off-colour item posted by one of your friends may give prospective bosses enough reason to hire another qualified candidate.
there aren’t any posts or pictures you wouldn’t want a potential employer to see. Assume guilt by association - delete any offensive posts by your friends and hide them if they have a habit of posting questionable content on your profiles. After you’re done, Google yourself to make sure there’s nothing hanging out on the internet you might have forgotten about from an old account or from something someone else has posted.
Schmitt says the increasingly complex nature of marketing yourself through social networks makes it necessary for colleges to teach students the best methods for using them. In his classes at Westwood College, which offers both on-campus and online degree programs, social media training is just as important as traditional job training techniques like practice resume writing and mock interviews. Schmitt offers the following social media tips to give yourself the best chance of getting the job you’re hoping for:
Demonstrate knowledge of your profession. Reposting interesting articles you come across relating to your field demonstrates knowledge and passion. Use your LinkedIn profile to share your experience and expertise, and post anything of interest that you may have authored on all your social media profiles.
Audit all your social media profiles to make sure
Make connections. LinkedIn is great for connecting with old teachers and other professional contacts. If you had a good relationship with a teacher or former co-worker, ask him or her to write a recommendation that you can post on your profile. Connect with those that you

organizations is also a great way to learn about job openings, and you can mention that you learned about the opening through social media to show that you’re adept at using these networks. “Some may lament that by accessing your profiles, employers can dig farther into your personal life

I have teammates that are 14 and teammates that are 40, and there are no barriers between
us when we’re on court. As director of a company, I least like to deal with finances. What are the advantages/ challenges of your job/ industry specific to Saudi Arabia? The advantages are that it’s a virgin market and there’s plenty of room for innovation and competition. Challenges are many - socially, women sports are a taboo, still are in many parts of Saudi Arabia; unfortunately, it’s associated with immorality in certain segments. Hardliners view women in team sports specifically as women who will do whatever it takes for the love of the game, even if it means letting go of religious principles, which is not the case at all, at least to Jeddah United’s vision and mission, which is to promote the culture of sports and sportsmanship within our religious values and framework. Other challenges are the limited numbers of facilities, coaches, referees, and women sports figures. No PE in public schools or university degrees means that there are hardly any national sports figures or cadres. What’s the gender bias/ advantages/challenges in your job/industry? Well, it is obviously male dominated, but I think that the gender challenge for females, that you rarely find women interested in sports as a career, is also an advantage as the ones that do get into it not just promote sports, but also break stereotypes of Saudi women locally and internationally. How does technology affect your job and how do you apply it? I think the answer applies to all sectors indiscriminately - in

My father Khaled Almaeena simply because he is a leader that creates leaders, always gives credit when credit is due, so charismatic yet graceful, positive, and motivational. How do you see the future of your industry? Overall, a multi-billion-riyal industry! Your advice to local entrepreneurs who are trying to make it big? RSV: 3 Lethal Letters Like many parents, Heidi Staats had never heard of Respiratory Syncytial Virus, commonly known as RSV, until she almost lost her son to the common, yet potentially severe disease it can cause…
RSV usually causes mild to moderate cold-like symptoms but in some infants it can cause a serious lung infection. While the virus affects nearly 100% of babies before the age of two, premature babies, defined as those born before 37 weeks gestation, are most at risk for developing severe RSV disease. Preemies are not as wellequipped to fight RSV as fullterm babies because they are born with underdeveloped lungs and a lesser amount of vital antibodies. These antibodies are necessary to stave off infections. Since Heidi wasn’t aware of the need to take extra precautions,

she wasn’t alarmed about Brett being around other children and enrolled him in day-care when he was six weeks old. During his second week, one of the teachers mentioned that another child had RSV, a virus Heidi had never heard of. Heidi noticed that Brett had a little cough, but no fever or sniffles. Erring on the side of caution, Heidi took him to the doctor. At that visit, it was noted that Brett’s lungs sounded clear and strong. “The next day, January 13, is a day I will always remember,” says Heidi. “I called day-care to check in on Brett and the teachers said he seemed fine, but a bit more lethargic than usual. However, within a few hours the teacher noticed that Brett was unresponsive and grey in colour and they immediately called 911.” On the way to the hospital, the paramedics were able to stabilize Brett with an oxygen mask, but shortly after arriving, he stopped breathing again. Doctors had to intubate Brett and transport him via helicopter to a nearby children’s hospital where he could receive the specialized intensive care needed to save his life. “I was incredibly confused about what was happening,” says Heidi. “When we arrived at the
hospital, I overheard one of the doctors saying the baby just brought in from the day-care had coded. Then, I noticed one of the paramedics had tears in his eyes. I knew this wasn’t a good sign but was in complete denial; how could this be my baby boy, who just yesterday had been deemed healthy?” Later that night, it was confirmed that severe RSV disease was what had caused Brett to stop breathing. He spent six days on the ventilator in the NICU and two more days at the hospital slowly regaining his strength. Severe RSV disease is the leading cause of infant hospitalization in the U.S., and is responsible for 1 of every 13 paediatrician visits and 1 of every 38 trips to the E.R. Additionally, while deaths are not common, severe RSV disease causes up to 10 times as many infant deaths each year as the flu, resulting in up to 400 infant deaths annually in the U.S. In addition to premature infants, other populations at high risk for developing severe RSV disease include children with congenital heart disease and/or chronic lung disease. Risk factors for severe RSV disease include low birth weight (less than 5.5 pounds), young chronological age (12 weeks of age at the onset of RSV season), and

Heidi’s son, Brett, was born only a month preterm. Despite his early arrival, Brett weighed a hearty seven pounds and was deemed ready for discharge after a few short days. Because of his healthy appearance, doctors didn’t think of Brett as a typical “preemie” and didn’t inform Heidi of the increased risks that impact all preterm infants, even those born just a few weeks early. In fact, even though he was a preemie, Brett wasn’t considered to be at high risk for developing severe RSV disease and Heidi wasn’t aware of the dangers of RSV, particularly for premature infants born during the RSV season (November - March).
situational risk factors such as attending day-care, crowded living conditions, having preschool or school-aged siblings, or exposure to tobacco smoke. Because there is no treatment specific for RSV disease, Heidi wants all parents to know there are simple steps they can take to help protect their baby from the virus. “I want all parents to know about Brett’s story and learn about the dangers of RSV,” says Heidi. “I’m so thankful that Brett is alive and thriving today. All parents should know how they can protect their little ones this winter.” To help protect your baby from
RSV, you should: * Understand the risk factors and ask your child’s paediatrician if your child may be at increased risk. * Help prevent the spread of the virus by frequently washing your baby’s hands, toys, and bedding, and by keeping your baby away from large crowds, young children, and people with colds. Additionally, anyone who touches the baby should wash their hands. * Carefully monitor your baby’s behaviour for signs and symptoms like a severe cough or wheezing; difficulty breathing
or rapid, gasping breaths; blue colour of the lips, mouth, and/ or fingernails; difficulty feeding; fatigue and fever. “I’ve seen how quickly severe RSV disease can develop, and how devastating it can be to families,” says paediatric critical care physician, Kari Kassir, M.D., of Children’s Hospital of Orange County. “While frequent hand washing is essential in preventing the spread of RSV, it’s also important to talk with your child’s paediatrician to determine if he or she is at high risk during the RSV season.” Visit www.RSVprotection.com for more information.

Health Dilemmas - June 2012 The weather keeps changing and my kids and me keep getting allergies symptomized by itchy throats and eyes, etc. What can I do to make it easier or better for the family and myself? Um Omar, Jeddah I’m sorry to hear about your troubles Um Omar, but the comforting news is that allergists are predicting a more intense allergy season than usual this year, so you’re not alone. However, there are some easy things you can do around the house to increase your family’s comfort:
Ask Nisrine
Keep windows closed. As much as you may love the new warm temperatures, keeping your windows shut will help keep pollens out. Start your air conditioning system earlier in the season and stay within the air-conditioned areas more. Clean and vacuum often. Mop hard surface floors and vacuum your home often to help minimize dust mites, one of the most common allergens. Wash bedding in hot water (54ºC), and use washable throws and curtains.
Schedule an HVAC tune-up. Allergy season is an ideal time to have your HVAC system inspected to ensure it’s working properly. A dealer can also advise you on how a whole-home air filtration system, such as the AccuClean from American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning, can catch up to 99.98% of allergens from your home’s filtered air including dust, dander, pollen, and bacteria. Reduce pet dander. Regardless of the season, pets such as cats, dogs, and birds shed pet dander, which can also cause allergic reactions. One of the simplest ways to minimize exposure to pet dander is to keep your pet out of your bedroom. Be sure to wash your bedding weekly, at a minimum, to reduce the amount of pet dander that will inevitably be tracked into your bedroom. By taking these steps you can improve the quality of the air inside your home and help reduce allergy symptoms. So while it may be allergy season outside, inside your family will be breathing cleaner and clearer indoor air!

Control humidity. Controlling the moisture content in your indoor air is an added measure you can take to discourage mould growth and minimize dust mites. Having a humidifier or variable-speed tech as part of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can help control your humidity and your indoor air.
Answer Source: ARA Content. To find an independent American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning dealer near you, visit www.americanstandardair.com.
Combat mould. Mould spores can cause hay fever symptoms. Repair and replace missing grout, leaky faucets, and pipes. Use a mole-proof shower curtain, and wipe shower stalls and tub toys dry after using them. Plants also sometimes carry mould and pollen, so limit the number of plants indoors. Enjoy the season’s colourful blooms on your deck or in the backyard instead.

Acne is a red irritating skin rash that is almost universal among individuals going through puberty in industrialized societies. It can, however, occur at all ages. About 80% of the world’s population suffer from acne at some point in their lifetime. It occurs most commonly during adolescence, and often continues into adulthood. For most people acne diminishes over time. There is, however, no way to predict how long it will take to disappear entirely and some individuals will carry this condition well into their 30s, 40s, and even beyond. Apart from physical disfigurement, its main effects are psychological such as reduced selfesteem resulting in social withdrawal and even depression.

Acne is a disease that involves oil glands of the skin. It’s not dangerous, but can leave permanent scars on your skin. Your skin has pores, which connect to oil glands located under the skin. The glands are connected to the pores via hair follicles. Sebum, an oily liquid, is produced by these glands and is carried to the surface of the skin

Numerous factors are responsible as causes, as in triggering the existence of acne, like: Hormones: All types of acne develop when pores in our skin become clogged. The culprit is sebum. Our bodies produce more sebum when our hormones (androgens) surge. This is why teens get acne. This is why women breakout before their periods. Estrogens, which

Beauty Dilemmas - March 2013
I have tried many, many creams that promise to make my skin better but nothing works! Am I using them wrong or is there something you can suggest that would work? Maria, Riyadh
You’re not doing anything wrong Maria; it’s just that your beauty routine should go beyond one bottle. The radiance of youthful skin is something that everyone is lucky enough to have at some point. But as the years pass, that nature-given glow tends to dull and slacken, leaving most people searching for a way to recapture that look. The booming cosmetic and skincare business produces plenty of one-jar wonders that promise radical results, but many of them don’t deliver. However, dermatology experts know that taking a broader approach to caring for your skin is the optimal way to get results.
Ask Sonja
Skin is inherently complex, and it faces a daunting variety of challenges, so it makes sense that treating it effectively takes an equally multi-faceted strategy. From your lifestyle choices and habits to the products you use, keep three things in mind when it comes to your skin: protection, reversal, and rejuvenation. Many people think that having younger-looking skin is simply a matter of not having wrinkles, but according to Dr. Neil Sadick, a renowned dermatologist and researcher, it goes far beyond that. “Changes in pigmentation, pore size, fine lines, and skin tone all contribute to skin looking older,” Sadick says. “So it’s important to treat each of those problems and address the causes in order to maintain a youthful look.” Because skincare shouldn’t be an afterthought, it’s important for women of all ages to protect their skin starting in their 20s and 30s. But no matter your age, consider these tips for keeping your skin healthy and looking its best:
Confused about makeup? Having a problem making the most of your features? What products to use? Ask Sonja to solve your problems!
Sun protection: Avoiding the sun is the best way to prevent damage from its UVA and UVB rays, but as summer arrives and spending time outdoors takes over, it’s often unavoidable. Using a skin cream with a minimum SPF of 20 will help protect your skin, but you should also use clothing, like hats, lightweight long sleeved shirts, and long pants, to keep the sun off your skin.
Staying hydrated: One of the best ways to keep your skin glowing is to keep it supplied with water. But you’ll need to do more than keep a bottle of water handy. Use a moisturizer that keeps your skin continuously hydrated - not only will it help your skin look better in the moment, but it also helps to protect over the long term. Your face is your calling card - the first thing people see when they meet you, and often, what they most remember about you. Protecting your skin with a multifaceted routine will help you put your best face forward for years to come. For more information on healthy skin, visit www.sadickdermatologygroup.com.

A skin-friendly diet: A healthy diet will be reflected in a healthy complexion. Focus on fresh foods that are abundantly available throughout the summer as part of a delicious solution for healthy skin. Avoid fried and highly processed foods whenever possible to look and feel even better.
Ask Sonja

A well-rounded skincare regimen: Just as a diet made up of only one food wouldn’t be enough to fuel your body, a one-dimensional approach to skincare won’t be sufficient to keep your skin looking its best. A regimen that protects during the day, works to reverse signs of aging, and rejuvenates through the night will address all of your skin’s needs. The Park Avenue Prescription kit from Sadick Dermatology group includes two creams and a serum, which are clinically proven to address visible signs of aging and help prevent and reverse environmental damage. The kit is affordably priced at select Sephora stores and online.

10 Lucky Décor Trends for 2013 Despite its negative reputation, the number 13 doesn’t always have to be unlucky. Take these top ten décor trends for 2013 from design experts, manufacturers, and trend forecasters across the country. They’re fresh, fun, and sure to bring good fortune to any home: 1. A Splash Of Colour Industry leader Pantone’s annual fashion colour report sets the tone for home décor as well as clothing, and the spring 2013 report is no exception. Its softerhued palette of Dusk Blue, Lemon Zest, African Violet, Grayed Jade, Linen, and Tender Shoots is emboldened by Monaco Blue, Poppy Red, Emerald, and Nectarine. Marc Thee, founder of a high profile residential interior design firm in America, also sees a move towards pure colour palettes such as cream and sea glass, khaki and white, or neutral with a pop of yellow.
3. Cooking Up Smart Ideas Next year’s contemporary kitchen will include European frameless laminate cabinetry, multi-tasking appliances, hands-free faucets, and increased smartphone and tablet functionality, according to Jamie Gold, a certified independent kitchen and bath designer in San Diego, California. Value-oriented remodels will remain popular, she predicts, with homeowners incorporating existing flooring, fixtures, cabinets, and/or appliances into their design plans to save money and retain favourite design elements. 4. Let It Shine Jeff Dross, senior product manager of Kichler Lighting, says energy-efficient LED products will continue to dominate lighting and will be prevalent in coves, tray ceilings, toekicks, and under and above cabinets. Chrome and polished nickel will appeal to the emerging Y generation and baby boomers modernizing their retirement homes. Tall, slender outdoor lanterns in contemporary, cottage, and transitional styles will work well for those in smaller urban spaces.

2. Not Your Mama’s Wallpaper “Repositionable wallpaper is a decorating mainstay,” says Todd Imholte, President of Murals Your Way, whose website www.muralsyourway.com, is one of the top online destinations for wall murals. The company’s ten collections of peel-and-stick wallpaper are available in themes such as Vintage, Dots, Flower Prints, and Mostly Modern, and can be removed and reused hundreds of times without losing their adhering qualities. Because the company offers colour matching, customers can match their repositionable wallpaper to an existing paint colour, updated décor, or the new Pantone colour palette.
5. Heavy Metal Susan Goldstick of Susan Goldstick Inc. predicts that home furnishings will also shine in 2013. New metals such as rose gold and gunmetal will be mixed, and pierced, hammered, and oxidized textural metals will be especially popular. Vendors will add metal to their wood pieces, and faux animal print metallics will provide texture and reflective light in the textiles arena.
6. There’s No Place Like Home “Even as the economy shows signs of improving, homeowners still find comfort in ‘cocooning’ in the warmth and safety of their homes,” says Graeme Smith, Conceptual Designer at Second Nature Kitchens. Adding an on-trend colour such as cranberry or velvety chocolate to a soothing palette of muted tones and delicate detailing creates timeless interiors, and incorporating vintage pieces fosters a sense of nostalgia, heritage, and solidity.
7. Woodn’t It Be Nice? Next year’s trendy furniture will boast reclaimed wood or reclaimedlooking synthetic wood, according to Lenny Kharitonov, President of Unlimited Furniture Group Inc. Combinations of wood and metal will be popular, such as a desk with a wood top and an iron base. Kharitonov also sees a new freedom to mix metals, linen, or stone into wood with the juxtaposition of materials and finishes creating a beautiful combination.
8. Watch Your Step Lori Kirk-Rolley, Senior Marketing Director at Daltile, notes that one of the biggest style trends of the year will be porcelain tile that emulates the look of hardwood in high-traffic areas, offering the natural beauty of wood with the long-lasting durability and ease of maintenance of tile. Rectangular-sized tiles, particularly those in long, linear plank styles, will remain popular in floor and wall applications. 9. Back To Nature Consumers’ eco-friendly focus on using organic, sustainable materials will continue into 2013. California-based Budget Blinds recommends woven wood shades made from bamboo, grasses, jute, reeds, rattan, and other natural renewable resources for honest, simple beauty. Smith suggests using timber and wicker furniture, ribbed and woven finishes on accessories, and layered wool throws in the living area of the kitchen to bring a sense of the outdoor into the home.
10. You Can Judge A Book By Its Cover Exterior design and landscaping say just as much about a home as its interior architectural counterparts. Artist and designer Pablo Solomon touts stone, concrete, and brick that blend into the environment, requires little upkeep, and is superior weather susceptible wood decks, rust-prone metals, and dulling plastics. He also sees increased use of eco-friendly native plants to save water and reduce pesticides.

Extraordinary Museums
Whether it’s mustard, accordions, or angels, Wisconsinites have a unique way of taking a hobby and turning it into an exhibit hall. Wisconsin, USA, is home to an eclectic mix of museums that go beyond the ordinary and are the product of a passionate person with a vision so strong that erecting a museum is quite simply the most reasonable option. Both entertaining and educational, the following Wisconsin museums offer an out-of-the-box perspective to visitors. If Rocks Could Talk: House On The Rock, Spring Green No words can truly describe House

on the Rock in its entirety. This classic Wisconsin museum features hundreds of eclectic displays and out-of-the-ordinary collections, from the world’s largest carousel to more than 600 Santas. One of many spectacular displays is the daring Infinity Room, a glasswalled structure that projects 218 feet out and sits 156 feet off the ground. This is a ‘see it to believe it’ destination. Music In The Ear Of The Beholder: World Of Accordions, Superior Whether it’s polka music or simply the romantic tune of ‘That’s Amore’, there’s nothing quite like
an accordion to turn a song from nice to unforgettable. Visit the World of Accordions museum and you’ll see how these squeeze boxes have transformed throughout the years. Helmi Harrington, the living and breathing force behind the World of Accordions, maintains a repair shop, technicians’ school, concert hall, and the museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of accordion family instruments and cultural artefacts. Tired of an ordinary holiday? Head to Wisconsin, USA, for the most quirky and extraordinary museums…
Evangeline Hoysradt took an interest in her grandmother’s unique paperweight. Years later at an antique show, Evangeline spotted a paperweight that looked just like it and was inspired. Six hundred and fifty-two paperweights later, she became an expert. In addition to having the world’s most representative collection of paperweights, the museum has four permanent glass collections, a collection of Germanic drinking vessels, and offers glass blowing classes. Sweet Or Spicy? Taste Your Pick: National Mustard Museum, Middleton Standing in an all-night supermarket looking for the meaning of life, National Mustard Museum founder and curator Barry Levenson heard a voice, “If you collect us, they will come.” That experience led to this most improbable museum that now houses more than 5,600 mustard varieties from 50 states and 70 countries. The museum is also home to hundreds of mustard items of historical importance and a tasting bar with free samples. The Birthplace Of Heavy Metal: Castle Rock Museum, Alma For a rare look at some of the most intricate and artistically fascinating armour out there, a Renaissance fair just doesn’t cut it. You need to visit the Castle Rock Museum in Alma. It all began when Gary Schlosstein, at age 10,
acquired a Civil War musket for $3. Now his museum is the most complete arms and armour display in the Midwest. The museum takes you through 2,000 years of history and hundreds of pieces of arms and armour. Heaven Sent: Angel Museum, Beloit Every time a bell rings in this museum of angel figurines, you can only imagine what happens. A love affair with an Italian bisque angel discovered by Joyce Berg was the impetus that began the world’s largest angel figurine collection. The museum of 11,000 angel figurines also features a collection of 600 African American angels donated by Oprah Winfrey. Just Your Type: Hamilton Wood Type Museum, Two Rivers Wood type is having a resurgence, and the Hamilton Wood Type Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to the preservation, study, and production of printing and wood type. When a collector almost purchased the equipment and patterns from the original Hamilton Wood Type Company, local businessman Jim Van Lanen persuaded the Historical Society to step in. The museum now houses 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1,000 styles and sizes of patterns as well as an amazing array of advertising from the 1930s to the 1970s.
Let’s Get To The Pint: National Brewery Museum, Potosi Did you know there’s a beer museum in Wisconsin? Go figure. But this isn’t your run of the mill ode to grain; this is the National Brewery Museum. A brewery with mad hops, it’s located in the small village of Potosi (population 700), which beat out cities like St. Louis and Milwaukee to become the site of the museum. Exhibits here include beer labels, bottles, coasters, glassware, advertising, signage, and other memorabilia. Three Rings Make A Right: Circus World, Baraboo Baraboo is home to a deep circus history. In fact, the three largest circuses in the world were all located in Baraboo at one time. Today its history is preserved for future generations at the 64-acre Circus World Museum, the vision of a Ringling family attorney. Located on the original winter quarters of the Ringling Brothers Circus, visitors to this National Landmark Site, which houses two-thirds of the world’s surviving circus wagons, can explore decades of circus history. Wholesome Wheat Crackerbread can be enjoyed by itself, with a variety of toppings, or as a bread substitute. One slice of bread is about 100 calories while three Crackerbread slices total 70 calories. Prepare - Instead of grabbing calorie-laden chips or candy, think of snacks as mini-meals and integrate them into your overall meal plan. By planning ahead and only eating when you’re hungry, you’ll avoid eating out of boredom or stress, according to The Academy. Spice up your normal veggie routine with bell peppers or
jicama, a root vegetable low in calories and high in vitamin C and potassium. Pair your veggies with a hummus dip for a fibre-packed snack. Go (a little) nuts - the Academy highlights that, in addition to providing protein, folic acid, and zinc, nuts have been linked to a reduced risk for heart disease, diabetes, and even some forms of cancer. Two tablespoons of raw or dry roasted slivered almonds, walnuts, or pecans offer less than 200 calories. For more snack ideas, visit www.Facebook.com/WASA.

News, views, and reviews...
Temporary Rise In Female Breadwinners In Europe Author of Rocking Your Role: The How To Guide To Success For Female Breadwinners, Jenny Garrett, shared her thoughts on a recent EC report investigating the impact of the economic crisis on the situation of women and men and on gender equality policies: 1. During times of economic crisis, the traditional view is that women behave as employment buffers, called in when demand expands but pushed back when it contracts. This has been challenged by this report and it seems young men and women on temporary employment contracts and migrant workers are the new buffers. 2. Dual earner couples lost ground in the downturn almost exclusively to the advantage of female breadwinner couples that increased their share to almost 10%. 3. In 2007 dual earner couples were the vast majority of all working age couples where at least one member worked (74.1% on average in the 26 countries examined). Male breadwinner couples were a minority (21%) and female breadwinner couples were a small component (4.9%). In the first two years of the crisis, dual earner couples lost ground (-5.1%), but almost entirely in favour of female breadwinner couples. 3. Men reported cuts in pay, heightened job insecurity, and
worsening quality of the work content more frequently than women. Women reported having to reduce work hours more frequently than men. 4. While more frequent complaints of job insecurity and pay cuts among men reflect higher jobs losses on their part, more frequent grievances about the quality of work content may also reflect the fact that in ‘normal’ times, men are less likely to be induced to accept compromises relating to the quality of their work on account of family commitments. 5. The share of dual-earner couples dropped by 3.7%, largely in favour of an increase in couples where the woman is the sole earner (+3.4%). It remains to be seen whether the additional women the crisis has drawn into the labour market will remain there if and when a robust recovery finally materialises. 6. The shift from dual to female breadwinner couples was more pronounced in some of the countries worst and first hit by the crisis – mainly the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania). Why are there more female breadwinners during times of economic turmoil? According to Garrett, there are five drivers behind the increase in female breadwinners during the economic crisis: 1. Women are cheap, they have always been paid less than men, even if the gap is reducing, and that means a lot when you, as an organisation or employer, are making tough financial decisions. Compare a man and a woman
doing the same job, and you’ll choose the woman because she’s cheaper and doing the same role. “Women earn £500,000 less than men over their working lives.” 2. Some male roles have been totally eradicated. Roles in male dominated industries in the private sector were the first hit and haven’t sprung up elsewhere. These men will have to re-train or sit it out in the hope that these roles will materialise again. While this is happening, women have to step in and be the breadwinner.
Text: © 2013 CMA Close Up News Service/Country Music Association Inc. Photos: © Made U Look Photography.
3. The maternal instinct. Women will do whatever it takes to look after their families, taking jobs that are well beneath their education and experience, part-time roles, etc. This makes them flexible and innovative in their approach to
New Artist Spotlight: Lucky Ned Pepper By Bob Doerschuk These two Bakersfieldbased singers infuse their music with some wide-open, big-sky flavour. The songs on their debut album, Get Lucky, are contemporary, each written by some of the best songwriters along Music Row. They’ve been around long enough to season their
work, whether that’s a combination of part-time roles, setting up a business, or highlighting the transferability of their skills, they’ll do anything to ensure their family doesn’t starve. This is evident when we think of the women taxi drivers in New Delhi and the increase in female breadwinners in North Korea.
as not taking work as seriously because we need flexibility for family, or seen as an expense because we want to have a baby. This means that we’re not discouraged by the climate but, as always, seek to make the most of the situation and rise above it, whereas men are finding it much harder to be in the position of underdog.
4. Pragmatism. If a family has children (depending on which country they live in) childcare will be a huge consideration. Making the decision for the partner who earns the most to stay working and the other to be homemaker for a while, is now an option many can’t afford not to take.
Jenny Garrett concludes: “In my book, Rocking Your Role, the female breadwinners that I interviewed saw their situation as temporary. I viewed this as a coping mechanism for women to deal with the stress and perhaps not deal with underlying issues they had about being breadwinner, but depending on the length of the crisis and how it works for them, they may deicide to make it a permanent arrangement.”
5. History. Women are used to being the underdog in the work environment; we can be regarded

Aries March 21 - April 20 Financial issues are finally resolving themselves and you’re in a great position to buy, sell, barter, trade, etc. You could also find this is a very good month for focusing on transportation, commerce, verbal and written communication projects, finding creative ways to express yourself, and for spending quality time with your family, neighbours, and local community members. Taurus April 21 - May 21 Despite some financial drama involving friends, teams, committees, memberships, groups, and/or internet activities, you’re actually having one of your best money months of this year! You have the planets in charge of wealth, commerce, luck, and enthusiasm all traveling through your personal wealth sector and taking turns brainstorming ideas to help you set and achieve meaningful goals within this area of your life. They could also give you a huge boost of confidence while doing so. Gemini May 22 - June 21 As a handful of planets travel through Gemini, they take turns working with Uranus in your social networking sector to help you with all kinds of groups, teams, clubs, networking projects, internet activities, etc. You’re a great friend and a wonderful team player anyway, but this month, you’re especially gifted within these roles. You are still having some trouble with a flaky, dysfunctional, or confusing boss or professional path, but things are about to get better. Cancer June 22 - July 23 There are a number of times this month when you find yourself questioning society’s rules. You’re arguing with yourself about your political, religious, cultural, academic, and/or philosophical beliefs. It’s OK to re-evaluate these things and come to new conclusions. As the month progresses, you shift into a very upbeat, creative, and smart frame of mind, which helps you brainstorm great ideas in your professional life, and you’re in the mood to forgive people that have wronged you in the past. Leo July 24 - August 23 You’re still experiencing some strong positive energy in your career, but it’s beginning to change from leadership and solo work towards teamwork and networking. You have some excellent opportunities to shine as a team player. You need to be careful not to allow financial or romantic activities interfere with the excellent professional and social activities you’re experiencing. Keep your love life and your investments away from your social circles and the internet, at least for now. Virgo August 24 - September 23 During most of this month, your profits sector and your professional success sector are working together to help you achieve some of your business goals. You still have a bit of the adventurous spirit left over from last month, but your thoughts are shifting towards your career and taking on leadership roles. A partner or competitor is unhappy with how well you’re doing, but that’s not meant to stop you from pushing forward with your professional and financial goals.

Your co-workers are not too thrilled about it, but your partner is on-board and ready to join you. Scorpio October 24 - November 22 Five planets are traveling through your chart area that governs trust and sharing, intimacy, joint assets, joint ventures, investments and other forms of profit sharing. They bring you good luck, wealth, romance, and optimism while you focus on these aspects. There are times when your career is more profitable but also times when you’re dealing with some romantic or financial trust issues. But overall, they’re working hard to bring more love and profits into your life this month. Sagittarius November 23 - December 21 Your parents, roommates, houseguests, home-improvement projects, real estate deals, retirement plans, and/or something in your private life is upsetting your partner. The good news is that both of you have quite a few opportunities to spend quality time together. You’re able to laugh, dance, play, fall in love, spend time with children and pets, get involved in each others’ hobbies, enjoy date nights, and/or work on fun creative projects together.
Capricorn December 22 - January 20 The planets in charge of good luck, wealth, commerce, vitality, and tenacity are all passing through your daily work sector this month. You’re smart, charming, productive, diplomatic, and lucky. This awesome energy also flows over into your private life and allows you to get a lot accomplished at home too. You’re on top of things and able to manage your time well, and you still manage to find time for playtime activities too. Aquarius January 21 - February 19 Five planets are in your chart area that governs romance, hobbies, talents, family, leisure, luxury, and happiness. You also have your own ruling planet, Uranus, making positive connections with these planets from within your community, commercial activities, and communications sector. This is an excellent month for romantic, social, and business activities that bring you joy. If you work in an industry that focuses on bringing joy into the lives of customers, then business could be booming this month. Pisces February 20 - March 20 During the first half of the month, you’re upset about someone or something in your home. It could be your roommates, parents, houseguests, a real estate deal, household project, chores, etc. However, your wealth and home sectors begin working together beautifully so you might be able to throw money at the problem. During the second half of the month, you begin having some really strong, smart, and fun energy in your home and you’re able to work through your household and personal issues.
