t is often said that success doesn’t come easy nor does it come overnight, unless you win the national lottery. If you’re an entrepreneur, that would certainly be a welcomed cash injection into your business!

One’s ability to succeed depends on how determined one is to accomplish a goal, and how passionate the individual is about what they do. This passion is the driving force that pushes an entrepreneur and gives him/her the determination and the will to survive in any economic climate, even when financial support is hard to come by. Recently I attended the closing ceremony of a three-day workshop called START (Start Today Attain Results Tomorrow) hosted by The School of Business Entrepreneurs (TSOBE). They teamed up with Sandals and other partners to give a group of young individuals the opportunity to receive training on how to start a business. The participants were able to make their presentations confidently, showing how they would execute their business plans. They had a very good understanding of what it requires to be a successful entrepreneur. They highlighted the importance of businessmen and women getting involved in their company’s daily operations, managing their money wisely and using creative marketing techniques to increase public awareness of their company’s products and services. Most important of all, they all confirmed that they were motivated to become successful because they love what they do. I felt deeply inspired by these young people as I listened to them expressing themselves with passion and explaining how determined they are to become successful business men and women in Saint Lucia. As a young entrepreneur myself, I found that I was able to relate to their experiences and ideals since I too am driven by determination and passion and, of course, I love what I do. Once again in this issue, we continue to showcase Saint Lucia’s young entrepreneurial talents who are eager to share their experiences with you and disclose the challenges they have had to endure in their bid to achieve success. With that said, I wish everyone happy read and I encourage you to check us out on Facebook and like our Facebook page www. facebook.com/dazzlethemag.com

The Amazing Health Benefits of Pineapple

W

e may not all agree on the sumptuousness of the pineapple but the health benefits can’t be denied. They are fantastic! Here are seven reasons why you should try a pineapple today.

Strong Bones Pineapples are well known for their ability to build and maintain strong bones. This is because they contain manganese, which is a trace mineral that your body needs to build strong bones and connective tissues. In fact, if you consume a cup of pineapple juice, you can get 73 percent of your total body requirement for manganese.

strengthen your gums and that will in turn help keep your teeth healthy and strong.

I can see you! Time and again, studies have shown that pineapples protect against age-related eye problems because it is rich in antioxidants.

Helps with irregular bowel movement Pineapples are rich in fibre, making them effective in curing constipation and irregular bowel movement.

Keeps your skin beautiful! Pineapple contains enzymes that increase the skin’s elasticity, improves skin hydration and removes damaged and dead cells. As a result, it helps you achieve a clear and glowing complexion. The enzymes in pineapples also fight free-radical damage and can reduce age spots and fine lines.

Treats Intestinal Worms Pineapples contain the digestive enzyme bromelain. A diet rich in pineapple helps clear certain intestinal parasites such as tapeworms.

Gum Health

Relieves Nausea

People are always very concerned about their teeth but they sometimes fail to pay enough attention to the gums. Our gums are equally essential since they hold the teeth in place. If a person has unhealthy gums, his/her teeth would be in bad condition and will eventually fall out. Eating pineapple will

A key benefit of pineapple juice is that it averts nausea or morning sickness. This is very useful for pregnant women who usually experience nausea. It also helps people who are looking to travel on an airplane or go on boat trips, which usually cause motion sickness.

How to Create the Perfect Budget – & Stick to It By David E.M DuBoulay

M

any countries are currently experiencing tough economic times for varied reasons, and although we live in a beautiful corner of the world where the weather is usually pleasant and our people are often viewed by outsiders as laid back and carefree, we too have our fair share of economic woes. While we are only able to influence the overall direction of our economy every five years in the hope of changing our fortunes, there are some small changes each of us can make in our daily lives, which can go a long way in helping us survive the challenging times that we face. Here are my ten suggestions:

Create a monthly budget and stick to it While it may be a lengthy and detailed task to create an accurate monthly budget, investing the time to do it and exercising the personal restraint required to stick to it can yield great dividends in your ability to save for a major purchase (house/land/vehicle). 12 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Once you’ve completed your budget and you have an accurate picture of your monthly expenditure, you will find it a lot easier to determine how and where to spend your money wisely.

Monitor your spending Keep all your receipts and review them on a weekly or even daily basis. This will not only help you to keep track of your spending but also to realise where most of your money goes so that you can reduce certain types of expenditure which may not be necessary.

Shop smartly Focus on essentials and don’t get side-tracked by luxuries or items which you and your family simply do not need, even if they are on sale. Buy in bulk whenever you can, provided you have safe storage for later use. Instead of buying a new couch consider recovering the old one. Hold on to clothes as long as possible before giving them away (never throw clothes away, always donate to the Red Cross or to your

nearest charity). Buying new things is not always necessary; you may be able to drive that car for another year before upgrading. Also, search for sales and discounts as often as you can; people are sometimes embarrassed or ashamed to exercise thrift by purchasing discounted items or those on sale. There is no shame in saving money wherever you can, you get the same products for a lower price and it is unquestionably the smarter thing to do.

Use cash as often as possible This makes it easier to track your spending and stay within budget. Using credit/debit cards, though convenient, can often result in forgotten spending which eventually comes back to bite you at the end of the month.

Conserve utilities Avoid unnecessary use of gas, water or electricity. Use a coal pot or natural fire to cook, take shorter showers, wash your car less often, and after 9:00 p.m. when everyone has retreated to their bedrooms, turn off the remaining lights throughout the house. These small steps can make a huge difference to your monthly utility bills.

Cut bad habits Whether it be alcohol, cigarettes, sweets or whatever your bad habit(s) may be, try your best to limit them or better yet cut them out entirely.

Bring lunch to work Buying a nice lunch is an enjoyable experience but doing so adds up at the end of the month and can harm your ability to save those precious pennies. Try carrying leftovers to work for an entire month and take note of the difference in your bank balance.

Wherever and whenever you can DO IT YOURSELF I am not suggesting undertaking work you have no idea how to do but rather tasks which you have knowledge of, or which a friend or family member is able to do. You can save a chunk of money by not hiring a professional. There are also DIY videos for almost everything on YouTube which are available for free. Try it out, if you don’t succeed then go ahead and seek professional help but you may surprise yourself at what you are able to achieve with a little elbow grease.

Eat healthy and stay healthy Medical bills account for a large percentage of annual expenditure and can be avoided by exercising and eating better. If possible grow your own food; start a kitchen garden and involve the entire family. Not only will you be proud of yourself but you will be consuming food which is pesticide and hormone free. Also, engage in as much outdoor activity as possible. Not only does it add to a healthier lifestyle, it also brings families closer and reduces dependency on technology (internet, video games, smartphones) for entertainment. Ride a bike or walk anywhere you plan to visit within close proximity; fuel is expensive and short car trips use more fuel per mile than long trips. Biking and walking are healthy ways to save money and as a fringe benefit you are helping the environment.

Work together Finally, make sure your spouse is on the same page in terms of saving. It is useless to save while he/she spends frivolously. If you stay focussed and ensure that a deposit is made to your savings account each and every month, regardless of how small, everyone stands to gain.

How to Remain Positive around Negative People By Sherin Andra Paul

I

am tempted daily to walk around with a lapel pin that says ‘Positive stories only, I’m building an Empire!’ When I was pregnant I wore one that said ‘Positive stories only, my baby is listening.’ It was interesting to note that many people would attempt to share their horror stories despite my drawing the pin to their attention. Why are people so prone to broadcast their negative opinions, as if they were platinum nuggets to be cherished? It’s because we don’t tell them that we prefer positive news. We haven’t been taught to celebrate the good fortunes of others and be happy for them. How many times have you tried sharing good news with someone, only to have them say something like, “Some people are just so lucky, I wish some of your luck would rub off on me.” If your words aren’t helping to ameliorate a particular situation, let them remain thoughts in your head.

14 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Make it your aim to ensure that when someone leaves your presence, the thoughts you have shared with them will help to create positive changes in their lives. I believe that if you are undertaking any project, whether it be heading off on a backpacking trip around the world, having a baby or starting a business, you will benefit enormously from listening to the encouraging stories of those who have done it. I am reaping the benefits of that daily. Positive stories give birth to more positive ideas, which leads to more positive outcomes, and that’s what we all want. I recently spoke with the winner of one of the local awards handed out to entrepreneurs annually and I was not surprised by his words. In fact, they fuelled the fire of optimism which was already blazing in my heart. In sharing his experience, he encouraged me to persevere.

The initial reaction to your question may be a blank stare … aah, golden silence! He will begin to search his memory bank for a positive story that he might have heard of. Alternatively, you can simply walk away from the NegaNews presenter. That’s right, just walk away. Keep a piece of paper in your pocket and a pen (yes some of us still enjoy the old-school method of taking notes) or type into your phone all the great news that you receive daily and see how great it makes you feel!

Turns Bridal Dreams into Reality by Mindy Luquiana Chicot

F

or some people the magic of being married starts from the day they answer ‘yes’ to the big question. All the planning and preparation that goes into a wedding can make it a fascinating or daunting experience. When the day finally arrives and those wedding vows are exchanged, it can turn out to be one of the biggest and most momentous occasions of one’s life. Nurcia Paul, Managing Director of Something Borrowed Bridals is making the dreams of many couples a reality. Her goal has long been to create a one-of-a-kind bridal experience for women in Saint Lucia. Thanks to her unique and innovative ideas she has made remarkable strides and her business has proven to be quite successful. Nurcia who hails from Dennery describes her upbringing as ‘economically challenging.’ From a young age she learnt the value of dreaming big and working hard to get what she wants. “I am from a large family of six girls and a boy. We are all originally from Derniere Riviere, Dennery. Like most families in Saint Lucia, we came out of very

poor beginnings. One of the things I committed to doing is working as hard as I could to get out of poverty and better myself and I’ve been working on doing that for a very long time,” says Nurcia. She began working even before she graduated from the Clendon Mason Secondary. Thereafter she worked in varied jobs and gained lots of valuable experience. However, opening her own business is what has given her the greatest thrill. Initially she worked with a dentist in Castries as part of an internship programme when she was about 17. Subsequently she was employed with the firm MediaCraft Photography as a sales executive and was responsible for selling Photos to hotel guests. “This showed me another scope of the business and naturally I gravitated to photography,” Nurcia explains. “As part of the photography team, I got to visit and work with many of the hotels. Being an outgoing person, I became very intrigued by the entertainment portfolio at Sandals Resorts. I did everything I could to get in at the hotel. I soon took on the role of an entertainment coordinator at Sandals La Toc where I stayed for a few years until I became pregnant with my son.” She gave birth to her son at age 21. At that point she realised she would have to start all over to provide for her baby. “I knew that I had to do what I could to get us on the right track.” She eventually succeeded in getting a job at Helen IT in telemarketing and call centre sales. From there she moved to Cable & Wireless where she worked in varied sales within the regional Call Centre. Nurcia then moved to the Corporate Sales department and over a period of 10 years she worked in several levels of Account Management positions which allowed her to travel and work in some of the other islands, including the BVI. In 2011 Nurcia got married. 2 years later her position at Cable and Wireless was made redundant. Once again she had to devise another plan to kick-start her career. “In making my wedding plans, I had decided that I wanted to rent a gown. However, I couldn’t find a

place in Saint Lucia, which offered beautiful, modern gowns for rent. I also wanted to share the experience with my sisters: go dress shopping etc… but that too was not available. So I thought that might be a good business to go into and I started doing my market research. The response was positive so I decided to start my own business, Something Borrowed Bridals. I had also been exploring other business ideas but this one just seemed to make more sense because people are getting married or they want to get married but they just think it’s an expensive venture. Something Borrowed is here to show people that there is an inexpensive way to get married.” Nurcia’s mission is to change the aesthetics of bridal shopping. She provides her clients with a unique experience that they can share with friends and family. Most of all, she provides them with a more economical solution to getting married. “Businesses do not open after hours in Saint Lucia. At SB, we open when people need us. It gives brides more options and a space which they can come to enjoy. We have a lounge where our guests are www.dazzlethemag.com DAZZLE 17

serenaded and given refreshments and they can bring friends and family to share and enjoy the experience. “Our guests are allowed to try on dresses, something which is otherwise prohibited in most establishments. We provide the option for the rental or sale of a range of items including candle stands, dresses, veils and jewellery. The concept is that the ‘something borrowed’, can be everything you want in your wedding. We have recently started Intimate Weddings by SB which caters to clients who want an elopement style wedding.” The lounge located in Good Lands, Castries offers a Hollywood-type glamour which is unsurpassed here on the island. “At the lounge we work by appointments, consulting with one bride at a time. Each bride has about an hour and a half to two hours to try on their dresses. They are allowed to try on as many dresses as necessary. This is followed up with some further consultation and once a decision is reached, SB would email the customer. We also keep in touch, in most instances up until the day of the ceremony.” In her bid to make Something Borrowed a premiere bridal lounge, Nurcia hosted a bridal show in January 2014 which featured a diversity of key players in the hospitality industry, including hotel representatives, bakers, florists, as well as soon-tobe-brides and grooms. The event was hailed a huge success by its organisers and patrons. Nurcia continues to work at forging strong partnerships and alliances with a range of companies

In response to how important her customers are to her, Nurcia replied: “If it were not for my customers I would not be where I am today. They are extremely important. We have to go to where the customer needs us.” Nurcia believes there is great potential for growth in the bridal business and as far as she is concerned, the sky is the limit as she and Something Borrowed Bridals continue to make wedding dreams come true. Attracting the Best Talent to your Business – How to get it Right

I

t is often proclaimed in business circles that an organisation’s human resources are its most critical assets.

Other factors, such as land, machinery and finance also add to an organisation’s resource portfolio. Unlike other primates, humans have the unique capacity to use their discretionary judgment and their physical, mental, psychological and emotional abilities to drive the productivity of these other resources. This idea has been articulated by numerous economists who generally assert that it is pointless for an organisation to acquire the most modern buildings and equipment or boast about its sound financial position if it doesn’t enhance its ‘human capital’ by using the collective knowledge, skills, experience and competence of its workforce in the 20 DAZZLE

most effective and efficient manner. Now, more than ever, businesses are focussed on growth, profit and sustainability. But here’s the million dollar question; can a business achieve

sustained growth without the right calibre of employees, equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills? Where can we find such employees? If we can’t find them, can we create them? Once we’ve got them, how do we retain them? These are just some of the questions that employers need to consider when building their workforce. The answers are never straightforward nor is there a ‘one size fits all’ type answer. The process of building a competent, productive workforce must be aligned with each individual organisation’s needs and the context within which it operates.

investment, one that is geared towards generating the expected long-term returns. It is critical that Human Resource Management play a pivotal role in shaping and driving the direction and performance of your business.

Getting it right will not be easy! Here’s a good platform to start: first determine your organisation’s current position versus the desired position, then conduct a gap analysis between the existing Human Capital and the required Human Capital to attain the desired position. This will give you a clearer picture of your employees’ skills deficit and act as a catalyst in helping you decide whether you should buy (hire) the needed skills from the labour market or internally develop (train) potential ‘star’ employees to enhance their skills. Whatever you decide, it must be a prudent and operationally sound

Whatever your business model, if your aim is to achieve optimal performance, always strive to: • Attract and employ the right calibre of people • Compensate them fairly • Engage and motivate them • Set them realistic goals and give them the tools to attain those goals • Develop their skills set (training, coaching, mentoring etc.) These are just a few tips on how you can develop and retain a competent workforce, which, in turn, will help to increase the efficiency of your employees and enhance your business’ performance – financial and otherwise.

rom the very first note, her music entrances you and touches you in a way that can only be described as spellbinding. Her hit single ‘Addict,’ like all the rest of her tunes exude a kind of musical chemistry that certainly makes you addicted to her songs. Driven by a burning desire to create music since she was a child, this passion continues to burn like a fire in her belly.

C

hristine Charlemagne, better known in entertainment circles as Chrycee, describes herself as a singer/ songwriter, aspiring musician and a lover of life. She is very passionate about her craft.

Her father was a DJ, so growing up she was constantly surrounded by music. Armed with a TV remote control which she used as a makeshift mic, she would imitate various

artistes. Despite her obvious talent and passion for music, however, she couldn’t muster the courage to perform outside of her home. It wasn’t until she was 15 that Chrycee decided to start singing in church. In 2008 she decided to take it to the next level and made the crossover unto the national stage. ‘Handle It’ was her first single, a catchy tune with a soca flavour. Though it was a huge success, she decided to change her genre and do something that felt more natural to her. Since then she has become known for her RnB and Soul hits. Chrycee admits the journey has been a bit challenging but at the same time, exciting. To date she has recorded seven singles, none of which would have been possible were it not for her sheer determination. She has also found the journey to be quite rewarding, citing as an example the joy she experienced on moving from hearing her first tune on radio to performing on stage, both locally and regionally. Chrycee juggles between a full-time job as a business development officer, a part-time student of the University of the West Indies and her music career. When asked how she copes with all three, she said: “I moonlight as a business development officer and student but really, the artiste is who I really am.” Understandably, managing all three aspects of her life has been really difficult. However, it is a sacrifice that Chrycee is willing to make as she continues working to meet and exceed the expectations of her colleagues and fans. She’s a firm believer of giving all or nothing, and does precisely that; she gives one hundred percent to her job daily, as well as to her studies and especially to her music.

festivals are made under the business name. She believes this approach adds a greater level of professionalism to the ventures she undertakes. Music should be treated as a profession and not a mere hobby, she maintains. Her aim is to grow the business to the point where it could provide services to other artistes and partner with other songwriters. Notably, 2013 was a remarkable year for Chrycee. Not only was she able to register her business, she also got the opportunity to perform at the St. Lucia National Day Celebration in French Guiana. She put together a dynamic band of musicians named ‘Soleil Band’. She considers this as one of her major accomplishments. Chrycee submitted a proposal to the organisers of the Tobago Jazz Festival Committee in a bid to win a contract to perform at the event. Within three weeks Chrycee received a positive response. However, she was faced with the challenge of meeting the travel expenses for both her and the band. Being a proactive person, she immediately submitted proposals to local companies seeking funding assistance for the trip. Digicel agreed to sponsor both Chrycee and her band and as a result they were able to perform at the Tobago Jazz Experience: Beach Jazz Fiesta in April 2014, as the opening act for Keyshia Cole and Earth Wind and Fire. They performed before a crowd of approximately seven thousand, the largest audience Chrycee has ever entertained. The group performed a twenty-five minute set comprised of mainly originals and one cover. Chrycee and Soleil Band’s journey to Tobago was also sponsored by Hobie, First Citizens and Voyager. Chrycee described the experience as ‘fantastic. Nevertheless, she said it was quite a challenge performing before of a crowd of this magnitude, none of whom she assumed knew any of her songs.

Chrycee admits that she often forfeits sleep and personal time to fulfil her dreams. However, she feels most alive when she’s singing and producing music and won’t give it up for anything. Doing what she loves is the primary motivation and she feels the need to keep pushing forward.

“It was a humbling experience looking out into the crowd and seeing their reaction to my music. They genuinely seemed to love the music even if they were not familiar with it and I got a few thumbs up and waves while I performed.” It proved to be even more rewarding for her when a couple from the event asked her to perform at their wedding.

In 2013 Chrycee registered ‘Chrycee Musique’, her own company which she started as an avenue for turning her song-writing and performances into a professional career. Her submissions to regional and international

In May this year, Chrycee and Soleil Band delivered two more memorable performances at St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival at Tea Time Jazz and St Lucia Jamz (Jazz on the Grill).

Chrycee has full creative control when designing her sets. Each song tells a story and with every performance she aims to provide her audience with an emotive and satisfying experience. This distinguishes her performances from that of most other artistes. One of her goals as a recording artiste is to perform regularly outside of Saint Lucia. Marketing is another of her key objectives and one she intends to continue working on. She views successful marketing as a doorway to success and plans to use her website and all other available options to promote her music. Meanwhile she is focussed on honing her creative skills and mastering her craft. Although hard to believe, Chrycee says she is quite boring off stage. In her leisure time she goes to the movies, watches television which includes cartoons and catches up on some much-needed sleep. Occasionally, she visits the spa for some quality ‘me time’. Dazzle wishes Chrycee all the best with her musical career and we look forward to seeing her on the stage again singing her heart out! Shoe Odour Foot odour occurs when excess perspiration from your feet soaks the lining of your shoes, causing bacteria to form. The way to prevent this is by having healthy feet. You need to ensure that you practice proper hygiene in keeping your feet clean. It also helps to replace or clean your shoe insoles regularly with

warm water. A shoe deodorizer can then be used to maintain the freshness in the shoes.

Heel Tip Replacement Prevention is better than cure. Have the original low-grade plastic heel tips on your new pair of pumps replaced before wearing them. Rubber replacement caps are more durable and can aid with your posture.

Heat A shoe’s worst nightmare! Avoid shoe peeling and cracking by storing your shoes in a cool place, always keeping them from direct sunlight.

Getting the right Comfort aids such as shoe liners can be used in shoes that don’t quite fit snug. On the flip side leather shoes that are a bit too tight can be stretched to 1-size wider and ½-size longer for greater comfort.

Kendell Gill Vanessa William Aiming to raise the bar in Business Law by Reginald Andrew

T

hese two young and affable attorneys from the law firm of Kendell M Gill Chambers mean business when it comes to plying their trade and they are in it for the long haul. Kendell Gill and Vanessa William have a yearning to achieve that level of distinction that would distinguish their business as a professional outfit of the highest standard. These young lawyers teamed up in an endeavour to be amongst the front runners in the legal field. Kendell and his cousin Vanessa visualized the prospects of utilising their combined skills to deliver creative solutions to their clients. Following his graduation from SMC Kendell attended the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) and then the University of the West Indies (UWI) at Mona, Jamaica on his way to acquiring higher education. He initially worked as an assistant accountant and then did a stint as a teacher at St. Mary’s College (SMC), his alma matter.

With a burning desire to fine tune his skills, Kendell pursued a law degree in the UK with expertise in the specialised fields of business and banking law. Meanwhile, Vanessa had her eyes set on making a meaningful contribution in the law field with a heavy emphasis on corporate law as well. Vanessa attended the St. Joseph’s Convent (SJC) and subsequently the SALCC A ‘Level division before moving on to the UWI Cave Hill Campus, Barbados and the St. Augustin Campus in Trinidad & Tobago to persue her legal education and training. Kendell dabbles in sport, originally volleyball but now takes a swing at golf. Vanessa, on the other hand, loves literature and the lighter side of social life, and also has a keen interest in music and art.

Vanessa and Kendell chose to stick with the original name Kendell M Gill Chambers which Kendell set up but Kendell likes to refer to the business as a team. They both sat down with Dazzle Magazine to speak about their goals and aspirations and how they plan to impact the local business arena. Dazzle: Tell us a little about your start-off in the legal profession, what motivated you to enter that field? Kendell: First, I need to begin by stating that I gained a BSc Degree in accounting from UWI, Jamaica and following that I worked for a few years as an accountant. Interestingly, before I set out to do law I wanted to go into not just banking but in particular the legal aspect of it. However, what really motivated me was a love for business, having been an accountant, and a realisation that every aspect of business deals with law. I figured that if I really want to understand business and advise people, it would be best for me to have a detailed knowledge of the rules behind every aspect of business. I spent five years in the UK studying for a law degree, a post graduate diploma in banking law and then did my bar exams. I was called to the bar in England and Wales in July, 2008 and in St. Lucia in September, 2008. Coming back to St. Lucia I did not opt to go into banking but got involved in “regular law” and international financial services (offshore business). This is my sixth year working fully in the legal field. Dazzle: What are some of the challenges you face as a lawyer and a businessman in advising clients and negotiating deals? Kendell: I actually enjoy working in that field and what may seem as challenging to some is not so for me. I enjoy working as a lawyer and developing our business. Dazzle: In serving your clients what are some of the priority areas you look to impact upon?

www.dazzlethemag.com

DAZZLE 33

Kendell: On becoming a lawyer I learnt that efficiency is essential, not necessarily in terms of working fast, but in satisfying the clients and making sure that you solve their problems. When people question me about my work I tell them I am a problem-solver. I find solutions and that is what clients want, solutions to their problems. That is how I approach the issue. I tend not to refer to their concerns as problems but issues to be dealt with. I am solution driven. Dazzle: What sort of clientele do you serve and how wide ranging are they?

fun facts What would you name the autobiography of your life? “Journey to a Peace Full Mind” If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? I would give half away to a children’s charity if I won the U.S. lottery. Kendell: We are a full-service law firm. We deal with the civil side of the law and that includes everything outside of the criminal ambit of the legal profession. We facilitate diverse transactions and by transactions I mean matters dealing with contracts and commercial law. We deal a lot with the commercial and corporate side of things, purchasing and selling of land, labour laws and such matters but we also accommodate family law issues. 34 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Dazzle: Taking into account your social obligations, do they coincide with your business outlook and approach? Kendell: I think that every interaction with another person is a social interaction and business can be no exception- business must be considered a social interaction. We are not simply looking to get more clients and recognise that we do have an obligation to our society. We hope to visit some schools to interact with the students and talk about our profession. We are also arranging talks with different community groups and churches to make presentations on aspect of the law and our profession. Sometimes you do get clients from these events but that is not the primary focus. People need to know how law affects them. Dazzle: Can you give us an idea of how you got involved in the legal profession? Vanessa: Before graduating from A-Level I found myself facing the dilemma that many other young people face – that of trying to decide what t I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I did not settle on law automatically, there was no light bulb that went off in my head or guiding light leading me to a legal career. The decision I eventually made was to choose a profession that would allow me a certain amount of freedom and the ability to work on my own, if I so choose, and the law is one such profession. I have had to grapple with certain disillusionments and I actually stepped away from the profession late last year before deciding to come on board with Kendell in March this year. I liked the vision that he shared with me and decided that it was time to make that sort of move for myself. I felt it was the right time and I know Kendell very well, as we are relatives and are in a lot of ways, of like mind. Dazzle: What is it like for a young female professional working in the legal field, is it more challenging to maintain good work ethics, bearing in mind that some female luminaries have blazed the trail? Vanessa: It can definitely be more challenging combining femininity and youth in a profession such as this. People can have a tendency to underestimate a young female in a field such as law, which sometimes conjures up the image of stoic patriarchs in white wigs, their noses in dusty books. But the challenge does not deter me from the desire to maintain a good work ethic- challenges can be invigorating if we let them be and I think that professionally, women are

becoming a force in the legal field taking the example of those Women who have preceded us and who are doing well. Dazzle: What are your views on critics who say that the legal profession is saturated with too many young lawyers? Vanessa:I feel there is room for all of us. I truly do, because it is not about what you do but how you do it. For me, it is about distinguishing yourself. Kendell: I do not think that the issue is just about too many young lawyers. My issue with it is that there are too many lawyers working independently. I think if there was more collaboration and consolidation it would not seem like there are so many lawyers in St. Lucia.

Dazzle: So you think there is more scope for gainful employment in that field? Kendell: To start off, it can be challenging because in every profession you have to make your name, to be recognized. But, if you do good work people notice, and this translates to more work. However, there should be a medium whereby young lawyers stepping out of law school could get some training from the more senior lawyers. This is something that I missed. There should be a period of mentorship. For example, in the UK where I studied law young barristers must attend seminars and training sessions to fine tune their skills. Vanessa: I agree law school teaches you theory, but in terms of the practical side which is very important, not so much. It takes time to learn the practical side of the profession. You must go through the processes and certain procedures that are associated with transactions in order to really understand them. Dazzle: What are some of the misconceptions about the profession you would like to address? Kendell: People tend to think that a lawyer is someone who simply argues cases but a good lawyer is one who knows how to find the law and apply it to different situations. He or she also has to be a good researcher.

fun facts If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? There are a lot of fictional characters that I have loved as the avid reader that I am but I don’t think that I ever wanted to necessarily be one- the allure for me most times has been the fact that they are so messed up or weird that I couldn’t imagine actually walking in their shoes. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? Ironing

Dazzle: What are your future aspirations and how do you hope to distinguish your work in that field? Vanessa: I think that the future is bright. I hope to attain the independence that led me to the field in the first place. I want to be good at what I do because that’s the only justification to do it. There are a lot of opportunities in the field of law, you just have to prepare yourself to take advantage of them when they arise and as a young lawyer I am not deterred at all. Kendell: We wish to grow our business in the south of the island and have committed to this goal by setting up an office in Vieux Fort. We feel it is necessary to establish a presence there. We think that we have the skills and lots to offer, in terms of our professionalism and efficiency. It is our intention to bring more lawyers on board and offer our services island-wide. We hope distinguish ourselves by being solution driven, to take a holistic view when serving our clients and to meet these clients’ needs precisely and completely.

Smart TVs Gaining Popularity Worldwide

S

mart TVs are gaining popularity with approximately 67 million sold worldwide in 2012, and that number was expected to hit 87 million in 2013, according to a recent survey by Forbes magazine.

Smart TVs have a higher focus on online interactivity, Internet TV, over-the-top content, as well as on-demand streaming media and home networking access, with much less focus on content delivered via the traditional broadcast media and set-top boxes. Smart TVs can deliver content such as photos, movies and music from other computers or network-attached storage devices using either a Digital Living Network Alliance/Universal Plug and Play media server or similar service programs like Windows Media Player or Network-attached storage (NAS), or via iTunes. Smart TVs also provide access to Internet-based services, including traditional broadcast TV channels, catch-up services, video-on-demand (VOD), electronic program guide, games, social networking, and other multimedia applications.

A Smart TV is sometimes referred to as a connect TV or hybrid TV. It is a trend of integrating the internet and Web features into TV sets and set-top boxes (a device that converts video content to analog or digital TV signals).

Currently the most popular smart TV brands on the market are LG, Samsung, Phillips, Panasonic Viera, Sony. They are available in different price ranges to suit one’s budget.

Sedale Simei

goes in ‘Deeper Than Soca’ by Reginald Andrew

T

his young Saint Lucian artiste’s ultimate goal is to unite people through his music and as a self-described ‘Freedom Fighter’ Sedale displays the ingenuity to market his craft as an exciting product brand. With a passion for Soca music and an eye for fashion design he is keen on adding that cutting-edge component to business and entertainment. ‘Deeper than Soca’ aka DTS is the latest trademark that identifies Sedale as a dashing Soca artiste and budding fashion designer. The 28-year old artiste and business entrepreneur is out to make inroads into the entertainment scene. After graduating from St Mary’s College (SMC) in 2003 Sedale Simei moved to the USA where he successfully completed a degree in marketing from Medgar Evers College. Sedale concedes that he was “actually drawn into the Soca genre after moving from Saint Lucia to the USA” and kicked off his performance in 2007. “It all clicked for me and lots of things that were happening in my life at the time complemented each other,” says Sedale. He thrived on the showbiz experience in the United States and used it to demonstrate patriotism for his homeland through his music.

40 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

His love for Soca intensified after doing some stints as a deejay and he worked closely with producers from the USA. His first release was produced by Sean ‘Mastamind’ Noel, a Trinidadian producer based in the

USA who had produced for the likes of Shurwayne Winchester and Bunji Garlin, among other artistes. “I started off with a budding producer and my first tune was entitled ‘Roll Deep.’ The track was recorded in New York but I would visit the island regularly, particularly during the carnival season,” he explained. Soon enough Sedale began working with local producers like Darrence Paul, which led to the formation of a Soca group. They worked on some tracks, namely, Ménage a Trois, Mentally Ill, and Love on the Road. That group evolved to become Deeper than Soca and under the DTS name he released songs with Vincentian Soca star, Skinny Fabulous.

Sedale utilised his marketing skills to get into the Soca arena and infused his designer-brand T-shirts into the mix. He readily admits that, “There was a co-relation between my music and my educational background that helped me pursue my career goal.” Originally from La Clery where his father, Suitbert Simei was an avid pan player and a calypso and Soca lover, his family later took up residence in the north of the island. This tinge of music in his veins, which has been there from childhood, was just waiting to be explored as Sedale settled in the USA, fitting into the entertainment crowd and looking to broaden his

horizons. He fully appreciates his family support for his efforts as he ventures into unconventional ‘chartered’ territory. It is a career move that he is very proud of and equally thankful for the support of the many friends that encouraged him to strive on. But how was the product brand for the fashion design conceptualised? “It actually just happened to fall into place,” said Sedale. “We had a Soca clique and we used to just print T-shirts to wear at our events and people would always inquire about the shirts and what did ‘Deeper than Soca’ signify.” People became more curious and wanted to know what the outfit is all about and what they

represented. “The term ‘Deeper than Soca’ caught people’s interest and they got attracted to us,” he adds. “Eventually people began to query as to where they could purchase these T-shirts.” Sedale says it soon dawned on them that there was a business opportunity out there and each year they would sell some T-shirts with the DTS logo and add a different design. “I used my marketing background to further the brand since I felt that sort of initiative was lacking in the Soca industry,” Sedale contends. “And there are lots of persons who are not involved or concerned with the marketing aspect of the craft.”

www.dazzlethemag.com

DAZZLE 41

He adds, “There are avenues to explore in order to market yourself as an artiste, your songs and your brand, and what we try to do at DTS is to think outside the box. This year, in addition to an extended line of apparel we decided to do events and have brand ambassadors come on board. And with ten people promoting the brand we think it has a more substantial impact on the public.” This year DTS rolled out six designs and added a line of female apparel with swimsuits to the mix. The production of the DTS outfit involves about 20 people and “the product brand aims to satisfy growing market demand.” His ‘Look Good Fete Hard’ motto resonates perfectly with his target market and this approach has attracted special orders from fans and clients in his homeland, Saint Lucia. Sedale wants the brand to become a household name. His DTS T-shirts are distributed and sold globally but on a small scale for now, with plans for bigger things in the pipeline. Sedale intends to make the most of this unique opportunity and lays out his rationale

for such a venture. “Music has powerful vibes and if people like your music then they can identify with your line of clothing. It always seems like music and clothing go hand in hand and it was definitely something that I wanted to explore.” It is a trendy fashion that has caught on with celebrities like Sean P Diddy Combs and Jay Z, and young Sedale is eager to cash in on this drift. He sees it as “a new frontier in the Soca industry” and an indication of the potential and scope to be explored in terms of the business aspect of it all. Sedale says that 2014 has been his best year so far as he gains recognition as a budding Soca artiste. For 2K14 he has released two tracks, Pandemonium produced by local producer, Miguel Joseph of Vibes Production, and Bumper Hunter produced by Leebo and Horseface. “I have definitely progressed as a Soca artiste because several people have been supportive of my craft and willing to help as well,” says Sedale. “This year has definitely been a testament to that and I have actually helped put a team together to help the brand get to where it wants to be.” Sedale looks up to Teddyson John as someone who truly inspires him and tops the list among his favourite performers. Teddyson, he says, has also inspired him “as an artiste to put out good music, with passion for the music.” “He is an artiste who seems to want to take things to another level, he has not conformed to the traditional standards and he is trying to set new standards and I definitely respect that.”

Sedale’s priorities for future growth includes working on further enhancing his music and according to him, “in order to do so, you have to align yourself with the right people, and people who have a similar passion for the music as you, and people who are good at what they do.” On the fashion-design side Sedale has plans to expand his DTS T-shirt brand into the wider regional market and cities globally. “My ultimate goal, no matter it is with music or what not, is to unify people. And to unify them so they can have a good time,” reckons Sedale, as sums up his take.
