I

t is often said that there is no ‘i’ in team or ‘team work makes the dream work,’ which implies that no single individual can claim total credit or responsibility for a team’s success.‘ Team’ in this context does not only relate to sports but also to the people who makeup a company, business or organization. Their collective contributions are extremely important in a company’s daily operations and their rate of productivity determines whether or not a company is successful. On the other hand, I like the phrase ‘You are only as strong as the weakest member on your team’ - meaning that despite all the great plans and ideas you may have for your business, if your team members are not focused and cannot execute their tasks efficiently, then this can negatively impact your business and prevent it from succeeding. With that said, Dazzle Magazine is very fortunate to have a team that is focused and dedicated to its success and I would like to give thanks to all the Dazzle Magazine contributors, and very special thanks to Alana Morgan, Aldrin Henry, Tony Williams, Mindy Luquiana Chicot, David Duboulay, Dahna Jn Charles, Reginald Andrew and Gareth Jules for their hard work and dedication over the past three years. Without you, Dazzle Magazine would not be possible. As we have done in all our other issues, Dazzle continues to put the spotlight on many of Saint Lucia’s young and aspiring entrepreneurs and professionals, and expose their talents and achievements to the world. Our hope is that others can learn from their experiences so that they too can believe in their dreams and be inspired to reach for the stars. If you want to be successful, it’s vital that you study other successful people. That’s why we have focused on providing content that is both entertaining and inspirational. It’s also why we will continue to feature individuals who have proven that success comes down to attitude, effort and focus. I hope Issue 13 satisfies your reading appetite once again. Why Watermelon is the Perfect Summer Fruit By Alana M.I. Morgan

C

ontrary to the popular belief that watermelon is made up of only water and sugar, it is actually full of nutrients that provide high amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and a low amount of calories. Watermelons are great summer fruits and their refreshing quality and sweet taste help to combat the heat. They are also a guilt-free, low-maintenance dessert for kids and adults alike to enjoy. Watermelons are a member of the botanical family Cucurbitaceae. There are five common types of watermelon: seeded, seedless, mini (also known as personal), yellow and orange.

Here are five benefits of including watermelons in your diet: Anti-ageing Free radicals in the human body are responsible for causing signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. Watermelon is a rich source of antioxidants like lycopene, Vitamin A and C. These help reduce free radicals in the body, thus reducing signs of ageing. 10 DAZZLE

Watermelon can be applied on the skin topically and consumed in order to get the best results.

Natural Toner This juicy red fruit is a natural astringent that enhances the appearance of your skin by acting as a natural toner. For the best results, massage your skin with a fresh watermelon slice or blend it with honey.

Cures Acne Watermelon is one of the best natural remedies for acne. If your skin is prone to acne or pimples, simply

the level of arginine in the body. Arginine is an amino acid that improves blood circulation and having watermelons in your diet helps to keep the blood pumping to your scalp. This helps to provide the proteins and minerals that encourage hair growth.

Cardiovascular Health massage it with watermelon juice every day. Here are a few tips on how to use it: • Cleanse your face thoroughly • Dab a cotton ball in watermelon juice • Apply it to your face. • Leave for 15 minutes • Rinse off with cold water

Promotes hair growth Watermelon contains abundant amounts of phytonutrients called citrulline. These help increase

A diet low in fat and cholesterol and rich in antioxidants is conducive to a healthy heart. Watermelon is rich in an antioxidant called citrulline compound. This helps in maintaining good levels of histidine-arginine. This is essential for the production of nitric acid, which helps in maintaining the elasticity of the arteries and blood vessels by curbing the interactions of oxidative stress. Red watermelons, which are easy to find here in St. Lucia, are a rich source of antioxidants called lycopene that spread throughout the body, thus neutralising free radicals. Lycopene also helps in reducing the risk of prostate cancer.

Interest Rates Basics: how they affect you by Gareth S. Jules

O

f course, by now many of us are frantic because of the ECCB’s decision to lower the interest rates on savings accounts at commercial banks. You may be wondering, how will I benefit from this or what does this mean? No need to worry! This article will shed some light on the basics of interest rates as well as what you can and cannot expect in the near future.

Interest rates can simply be defined as the amount charged by a lender to a borrower for use of their assets. When one deposits money at a bank, the institution will pay you a rate of interest for the use of your funds for investing and for lending to other people who do not have access to those funds. The bank will in turn charge people who require loans a specific rate of interest. The profit that a bank or anyone can make from borrowing and lending money is the difference between the interest on lending minus interest on savings, hence the reason why the rate on lending is higher than the rate a bank will pay you for your savings. Imagine if a bank were to offer you a 3% interest rate on your savings and then lend those funds at a rate of 3%. This means that the bank would make no profit and would therefore not be able to meet expenses such as paying its employees.

12 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Banks and other financial institutions are limited as to their freedom to set interest rates. They are regulated by an overseeing body who sets floors for interest rates (prime rates). The interest rates on savings are standardised across the board. Some banks may choose to offer a slightly higher interest rate than the primary rate. These products come with special terms and conditions and in most cases require you to deposit and maintain a minimum account balance.

Interest rates are, in most cases, applied as a percentage of an amount for the period of one year, which can sometimes be broken down in different periods such as daily, monthly, semi-annually, quarterly and yearly. Most interest rates on savings are applied quarterly. However, regarding loans, they are applied yearly and compounded monthly. The interest rate may be higher, taking into consideration the likelihood that the loan applicant may not be able to repay the loan, which poses a risk to the bank. The higher the risk, the higher the interest rate.

Central Banks reduce interest rates whenever they wish to stimulate investments and increase lending and consumption in an economy. Over the past few years, there has been a lot of money circulating in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union and, as a result, the ECCB decided to lower interest rates on savings from 3% to 2% with the hope that banks would lend more. Excess supply is supposed to reduce interest rates and, in turn, increase demand for loans. By now, I’m sure you’re wondering whether or not your bank will offer you lower interest rates for loans. That is possible. However, it is entirely up to the bank and their credit risk policy. A low interest rate, especially on loans, can be risky and lead to excessive growth, which can then lead to inflation. Inflation erodes purchasing power and can thereby lead to unsustainable economic expansion. Low interest rates on savings can discourage people from saving and force them to find an alternate means of investing. After all, saving your money at a bank is indeed an investment since you earn a rate of return. Don’t be anxious. There is no need to worry because the ECCB has lowered the interest rate on savings. Has your bank been giving you problems lately when you tried to obtain a loan? Let’s hope they begin to engage in aggressive loan campaigns with attractive rates that will allow you to achieve that dream home or car that you’ve been wishing for.

Should You ‘Pay to Play’ on Facebook? by Kristel Kouly

I

f you own or manage a Facebook business page, I’m sure you’ve noticed something funny going on. All of a sudden less people are liking, sharing and even seeing your posts. You start asking yourself, what’s going on? Why doesn’t anyone like me anymore? What happened?

Well first off, it’s not your fault. Facebook has once again changed their algorithm, making it harder and harder for you to reach your customers or clients without ‘paying to play.’ No longer are these the good ole days when you could reach a significant number of your followers through organic reach. Despite this change, I’ve found a few clever ways to manage your page, allowing you to potentially reach your customers without using the ‘pay to play’ model. Once you develop your organic reach, boosting your odds of reaching more followers will become cheaper and easier.

Do’s

Embed videos into Facebook. Videos now play automatically (like Instagram) when users scroll 14 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

through their timeline. This tactic is known to bypass the Facebook algorithm as long as you embed the video and don’t paste a YouTube or third-party website link.

Every now and then re-post old content that received a high number of likes, comments and shares. You know it worked already, so keep it going! Re-post a viral post from a page with a high level of engagement. This will allow you to be discovered by other users and feed off the traffic generated from that post. Ensure you check out the page you are re-posting from. Pages with low levels of engagement can also hurt your reach.

Post more often, using 10 words or less. This will likely get additional users to see your post. However, be careful with this method: Facebook likes consistency. If you post three times a day, stick to that. Facebook will assume you have stopped managing your page and not push your posts if you do not stick to your schedule. Make sure you develop a schedule that works for you

Don’ts

Never post links along with hash tags; use only one at a time.

Use Facebook Insights. This is a really great tool to help you track which posts tend to receive more traction from your users. Once you figure out what your followers are more drawn to, you can then use this information to formulate new posts that will likely have a higher chance of getting liked and shared.

Try not to use hash tags (yes, I know you love them but they really are a no-no) unless they are directly related to your business or have a high level of engagement. If you really like hash tags, use them to come up with an engaging promotion. Only tag pages that have a high engagement rate. Tagging pages with low engagement can negatively affect you. Do not buy followers, these people will not interact with your page or ever see your posts.

he fishing village of Laborie has long been known for producing individuals who have achieved academic excellence, most notably our Governor General, Dame Pearlette Louisy, Allan Louisy, Velon John, Rick Wayne and Agatha Jn. Panel, just to name a few. Keddy Lesporis was fortunate to have grown up in ‘The Republic of Laborie’ as it is often called, where he used his love for cricket to further inspire the residents of his community. He lived near the Laborie playing field and from the age of eight, he took up the sport which now allows him to travel the region doing what he loves. He initially began playing with a team called South Stars in the Laborie Cricket League, where he was fast tracked to become one of Laborie’s finest sportsmen. His cricket education continued through secondary school. He played for the Vieux Fort Comprehensive and Leon Hess Comprehensive school teams. In the absence of cricket academies at that time, school cricket was considered the best form of development for young players.

16 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

‘Playing for the school team was a way of honing my skills through perseverance and hard work,” says Keddy. ‘The team showed me the importance of practice and determination. At the end of the day, we were playing to outdo other schools, to get selected for trials and play for Saint Lucia or just for the fun of it. A team either wins or loses together, so the value of teamwork was clear and reinforced every day. Being part of the team gave me a sense of belonging.”

Keddy revealed his admiration for local sports hero, Darren Sammy, the first St Lucian to be selected on the West Indies cricket team. He points to Sammy’s outstanding leadership and says it helped to boost his own self-confidence and that of the West Indies cricket team. He also admires Indian legend, Sachin Tendulkar and his style of batting and footwork, as well as his appetite for scoring. Brian Lara is another source of inspiration for Keddy. He thinks Lara played the sport with class and had a remarkable ability to turn a game around. South African batsman, AB De Villiers is, in his view, one of the most entertaining batsmen of all time. He learned a lot from all these outstanding cricketers and believes this helped him advance to the Windward Islands Volcanoes, formerly the Windward Islands cricket team. He also credits his experience on the regional team and the influence of West Indies players like Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Devon Smith and Shane Shillingford for aiding him to enhance his playing skills and reach the next stage of his career. ‘Playing for the Windward Islands is a unique experience. With the other teams from the region (excluding the Leeward Islands), everyone is basically from the same country, but what makes it different with the Windward Islands is that the players come from four different islands. So essentially, there is somewhat of a cultural difference. The beautiful thing about it is that we are able to unite and be each other’s keeper and face our challenges together. It feels good to know that we are working towards a common goal.’ Recognising his talent, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) enrolled him in the West Indies High Performance Centre in Barbados. This helped Keddy become a much more all-round cricketer, focusing on fine-tuning his strengths and addressing his weaknesses.

DAZZLE 17

On the back of his HPC education, he ended up scoring his maiden List A century for the Windward Islands against regional powerhouse Jamaica last season, in the Nagico Super50 tournament. This represented a significant step forward in his career. ‘It was a good feeling to score a century, especially knowing that I was the first non-Trinidadian at the time to score a List A century at the Oval. I see this as the start of more to come but this will only happen through hard work and prayers.’ Keddy was drafted into the St Lucia Zouks in last year’s tournament, and was retained for this year’s competition. He was elated when he made it into the CPL, a tournament which he believes mirrors the biggest T20 tournament in the world, the Indian Premier League. ‘Being part of the CPL allows you to play with some of the best players in the world. One of the CPL’s objectives is to provide opportunities for young cricketers to display and hone their skills. I feel privileged to be part of that experience.’

fun facts Favourite Colour: Red Best vacation spot: Barbados Pork, chicken or veggies: Chicken Favourite movie: Any action movie or comedy! If you could have any super power? Superhuman strength Biggest fear: God Keddy believes that cricket in the Windward Islands is developing because of the increasing number of cricket programmes and academies operating across the region. He’s optimistic that upcoming cricketers will get the support they need to develop their skills. However, he also believes there’s still more work to be done. 18 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

‘I believe that there ought to be more competitive games in the region throughout the year. There’s a dire need for a better structure in the governance of cricket in the respective islands. Those in charge ought to ensure the survival and sustainability of the game’. ‘My dream is to become a test player, to play at the highest level for the West Indies. I endeavour to be an established batsman on the team and represent Saint Lucia and the West Indies with great courage and pride. I would like to be a role model for young and upcoming cricketers as I continue to work to develop the qualities of good sportsmanship.’ Keddy’s advice for young cricketers on a similar journey is simple. ‘Talent is not all. In cricket you have to be disciplined, have a good head on your shoulders, work extremely hard, train tirelessly, cooperate and have a sense of commitment. Sportsmanship is very important. Who you are as a person is far more important than who you are as a player. You need to be respectful, a team player and understand that the aim is not just to win but to bounce back if you lose. Cricket is a gentleman’s sport. It’s about learning to endure many challenges and working hard to improve the game. As for me, the greatest part of the game is the opportunity to play the sport I love.’

Suicide Prevention How to Help Someone who is Suicidal

by Phoebe Fraites

A

ccording to the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), suicidal behaviour is a major public health problem across the world. Data from the WHO indicates that approximately one million people worldwide die by suicide each year. The number of lives lost annually through suicide exceeds the number of deaths due to homicide and war combined. In the Caribbean, there is little research conducted to determine some of the reasons why people choose to end their lives. Some of the earliest studies of suicides in the CARICOM region done during the nineties were carried out in Trinidad & Tobago and, subsequently, in 24 DAZZLE www.dazzlethemag.com

Guyana and Suriname. Jamaica, Barbados and Saint Lucia are among the few countries in the region with very low rates of suicides, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Guyana is ranked fourth in the international suicide data. With recent cases emerging in the last few weeks in Saint Lucia, citizens and medical professionals alike have expressed their concerns. As noted by Dr. Naomi Jn. Baptiste, Consultant Psychiatrist at the National Mental Wellness Centre, members of the public do not view or accept mental health disorders as a form of illness and they sometimes think that the affected person needs to “snap out of it, without realising the individual may be experiencing the symptoms.

Notwithstanding the annual observance of Mental Health Day throughout the Caribbean, people who are suicidal are not always taken seriously, until it is too late. As a result, the opportunity to help them obtain proper medical care and address early symptoms of the disease is lost. People who suffer from bio-polar disorder, schizophrenia, as well as those who are genetically predisposed to depression, are among the individuals who are most susceptible to committing suicide. Although stress may not necessarily cause a person to commit suicide, many suicide victims previously suffered from a pre-existing mental health illness, and as a result, when they experienced stress, it escalated the symptoms.

International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) offers some warning signs to look for in persons who are prone to commit suicide. • Constant talking or thinking about death • Displaying feelings of deep sadness constantly • Inability to sleep or eat • Having a death wish or tempting fate by taking risks • Losing interest in things they used to care about • Putting affairs in order or changing a will and visiting or calling people to say goodbye. In the majority of suicide cases, family members and people who were close to the victims, upon reflection, often speak about those signs that the victim had been exhibiting prior to his/her death. Recognising these warning signs can help save lives. The IASP offers the following guidelines, which can further help in preventing suicides: • Never dismiss any signs of suicide as trivial. It is a cry for help. • Always try to engage the person in subtle conversation. Let them know much you care. • Never say to the person “you have so much to live for.” This can only lead to further suicidal thoughts. • Encourage the individual to seek help. • Never leave the person on his/her own. • Remove all sharp objects or weapons, ropes and drugs that could cause additional harm.

One of the best ways to minimize the risk of suicide is to recognise the warning signs and to be able to apply simple preventative measures. People who rank high in suicide statistics include prisoners, and victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence. However, there are reported cases of victims who do not fall into any of the categories listed. It is important to pay attention when someone is showing suicidal tendencies. The cry for help can be subtle or sometimes more obvious, depending on the individual’s state of mind and the extent of their mental illness. In some cases, they may have made several attempts at taking their own lives before they eventually succeed, hence knowing what signs to look for could save someone’s life. The global rates of attempted suicides are 20 times higer than the rates of deaths by suicides. The

However, the appropriate intervention does not end there. If the person has been prescribed medication, it is important to remain vigilant and encourage the individual to take their medication. Studies have shown that people who have recovered from stressful events in their lives are often astonished by some of the suicidal thoughts they had been entertaining prior to taking their medication. This is why support from family and friends is so important and highly recommended. Let’s face it - we all experience ‘lows’ at times for various reasons but having the ability to rise up and regain some level of normalcy is never an easy task for anyone who is suffering from mental illness. Suicide is preventable. With a little knowledge, patience and understanding, we can all contribute to saving lives.

Why Customer Retention is so Important Imran St.Brice

A

ny successful entrepreneur or business owner is fully aware that customer retention is an essential factor in the growth of their business. In fact, customer retention acts as the supporting lifeline of a long-term business. For something this important in business, its definition is quite simple. Customer retention is the activity that a company undertakes to prevent customers from defecting to alternative companies, or rather to create loyal, consistent customers out of everyday patrons. 28 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

If you’re still not convinced of the importance of customer retention and how crucial it is to advancing your business, consider these two facts: It increases revenue - Businesses in every field spend ample amounts of revenue on sales, marketing and advertising, mainly to attract new customers. While this could be beneficial, it is not the most efficient strategy to use in the long term, simply because paying to gain new customers who may only visit once and never return will surely put your business at a loss. Customers who truly value your products

and services more than that of your competitors will patronise your business more and this will increase your revenues and ultimately save you money. It helps you gain more referrals - Customer loyalty increases the likelihood of a customer telling others about how great it is doing business with your company. The most cost-effective form of advertising is by word of mouth because it shows that customers feel confident about utilising your business’ products. There are simple strategies that business owners can implement to ensure successful customer retention, which in turn, can reap excellent benefits for your business as well as your customers.

It is important to note that customer retention is based on loyalty on the part of both the business and its customers, and this loyalty is established at the first contact and continues through the lifetime of the relationship between the two parties. This means that the frontline representatives must be able to provide top-quality customer service. Business owners need to ensure that their employees are properly trained to serve the customers they encounter from day to day. They need to be pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable about the products and services the business provides. Customers often become indifferent or displeased when they are served by mediocre, apathetic and uninterested employees.

It is a fact that no one knows what the customers want better than the customers themselves. The most effective and cost-efficient way to gain this knowledge is by carrying out customer surveys. helping companies discover how Simple HR can be By Mindy Luquiana Chicot

B

ehind every small business there’s a story worth telling. One of the key messages that often shine through in the success stories that Dazzle has featured is that you have to make the best of the opportunities afforded to you. Always strive for excellence and remain focused, with success as your ultimate goal. The road to entrepreneurial success is not always straight forward but you have to be ready to ‘seize the day’. Unassuming, yet acutely methodical are just two words that I can use to describe Goretti Lawrency. I first met Goretti a few years ago while training in the Telesales Department at Cable & Wireless. Though time has passed, she is just as focused and ‘about her business’ as she was many years ago. Now the proud owner and Managing Director of HRWise Inc., Goretti shares the story of her life experiences with Dazzle. Goretti Lawrency first attended the Canon Laurie Anglican School. She later went on to excel at St. Joseph’s Convent and Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, at the Division of Technical Education & Management Studies before moving into the workforce. At SALCC she pursued secretarial studies despite her initial interest in hospitality studies, since her parents did not want her to remain idle. “I actually did secretarial studies, the one thing I absolutely did not want to do ever in my life! I wanted to pursue Culinary Arts-Hospitality Studies but there was no space available for that course at the time. My parents decided that I would not be spending a year at home doing nothing, so I did what was available.” Upon completing her studies, Goretti began her professional career as a secretary, working in the Government service; “temporary employment,” as she describes it, often filling-in for colleagues on annual and maternity leave. She was subsequently appointed

30 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

to the post of Secretary for the then Minister of Communications. Later, an opportunity arose for Goretti to work at the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) as a member of the Corporatization Unit, during the company’s transition to WASCO. Close to the end of this project, she received an offer to work at Cable & Wireless in their Human Resource Department as a Personal Assistant to the Divisional Manager. She decided to accept this offer instead of returning to her role at the Ministry as she felt it created greater opportunities for personal and professional growth. After serving for a few years as a Personal Assistant to different Divisional Managers and regional VPs at Cable & Wireless, she transitioned into the Human Resource field where she was responsible for creating and managing the human resource function within the Telesales Department which, at the time was treated as a separate regional unit. At that time, Goretti pursued an executive diploma course in HR Management with the University of the West Indies. After numerous promotions, she would eventually become the Head of Human Resources for LIME’s Southern Cluster. In this role, she was responsible for managing the company’s human resources on a national and regional level. “Throughout my career, though I thought about owning a business, it was never with any seriousness. I always saw myself managing someone else’s business. Through the latter part of my career, the last five years or so, I gave it some more thought. I just felt that I had been managing HR on a regional level for about six years, providing support to persons at the highest level within the organization, so I thought, ‘I could do this for myself.’ I wanted to make a positive contribution to businesses in Saint Lucia by influencing the effective management of their human resources. I initially saw the need to assist particularly the smaller businesses, which were not focusing on HR and were losing out on growth potential as a result, but the more I thought about it, the more opportunities I saw. So, I decided to branch out on my own. The rest is history.” HRWise was born. As the name suggests, the company provides a broad spectrum of HR-related services, including strategic planning and management, HR support, payroll administration, training and benefits administration, to name a few. HRWise is the first company of its kind in St. Lucia,

underscoring Goretti’s talent as a true leader, in all facets of her life. She can proudly say that HRWise is the only company on island specifically designed to cater to the human resource needs of the growing business sector. HRWise provides companies, especially small and medium-sized businesses, with the more feasible and affordable option of outsourcing their HR duties to an outside firm, rather than incurring the substantial costs of an internal HR department. This allows them to focus on their core competencies and become more productive and efficient. Undoubtedly, hard work and sleepless nights are the price of success for HRWise. As one could imagine, starting a new business from the ground up doesn’t happen overnight.

“Do we ever stop working? On average, I work sixteen hours a day. It does not stop! It is a new company and it’s important to set a solid foundation in the market. As an entrepreneur, the job security in receiving a paycheck monthly is not guaranteed. When you work for yourself, the onus is on you to go out to find the work. Nothing is confirmed as opposed to working for someone else. It is a continuous process of finding new clients, sustaining the ones that you do have and meeting the targets you have outlined.” There is no clear-cut path to success or a manual that one can follow. Although there are similarities in every success story, the formula has to be adapted to fit

the business. Experience has taught Goretti that, as a business owner, one has to be flexible and willing to change to accommodate changing environments. She does however, firmly believe in some basic principles. “Being honest and fair will go a long way in terms of people having a certain level of respect for you and the quality of work that you can produce. The success of your business is heavily dependent on your customers, so if you can win that trust or faith from your customers then you’ve guaranteed a component of sustainability. I am a very organized person and I try my hardest to always deliver on my word. My focus is providing quality service on time.”

HRWise’s objective is to grow regionally. This is a relatively short-term goal, which Goretti is extremely keen on achieving. With strategic alliances and a reliable team, she anticipates that within a few months it will come to fruition. Goretti urges more St. Lucians to take up the entrepreneurial mandate. Given the current rising unemployment rates and growing instability in the corporate sector, she believes that more people should explore the potential for self employment, with the ultimate goal of self-sustenance and discovering new avenues to generate revenue. One of the perks of being self-employed is the freedom to create, the freedom of time and freedom to reach one’s full potential. Nevertheless, Goretti emphasizes the need for a strong business plan, adequate research and confidence in one’s product. She also believes it’s crucial that one not be deterred by what others may think, as all too often people will try to dissuade you from achieving your dream. She strongly recommends having a good support system as a base for remaining focused. “I would like to stress the fact that I started off as a secretary against my will, I often say. However, sometimes we are led in a different direction to prepare us for the greater opportunities that lie ahead. My experience as a secretary taught me so many things that have contributed to my success throughout my HR career. Even though things do not go according to plan – for example, you may be deterred along the way and things will happen that send you in a different direction - this does not mean that you need to stop or not follow your dreams. Even though I started out in a role that I never wanted, throughout my career I worked diligently, progressed, got qualified and eventually ended up in a position where I was managing people who managed people across the region. I never gave up. Too often young people give up too easily. No matter where you come from or what challenges you may face along the way, there is always opportunity to grow. Its all about your mindset and attitude.” Goretti is in the final stage of completing her Master’s degree in Human Resource Management, a step toward continued self-improvement. Dazzle not only wishes her success in her academic pursuits but would like to wish her continued excellence with HRWise.

ith technology at the forefront of today’s society, we rely heavily on electronic devices for emails, instant messages, media and the time. Who needs an alarm clock? That’s what Smartphones are for. If you need to know the time, one glance at your mobile phone or tablet provides a quick answer.

an elegant timepiece with character and style. With statistics showing that on average business people can attend up to 62 meetings each month, a watch can go a long way to ensure that you’re up to the time.

When you consider it, a watch is not necessary and there are some who don’t even own one. But for those of us who do, a wristwatch says class. Maturing meant graduating from a digital watch with a rubber strap to 34 DAZZLE

Despite being invented over 400 years ago the wristwatch was first only popular with women. It wasn’t until 1917 that men embraced the device after they were seen on the wrists of soldiers. Today’s wristwatch runs the gamut from digital to analog. Ladies watches have recently made a move from

petite, feminine forms to a unisex or boyfriend style. Women can now be seen wearing larger metallic pieces with secondary dials and knobs common to men’s watches. Materials have also changed: once gold and stainless steel reigned supreme but silicone and ceramic materials have now gained popularity. Monochromatic colours are having a moment and the Swiss Swatch brand, popular in the 1990s, has made a resurgence with its fun, colour pieces.

On the other hand, two main themes can be identified in the design of men’s watches – classic analog and functional. Elegant timepieces can often be found with gold, stainless steel or leather straps. While more rugged functional styles may be presented with leather, rubber or canvas straps, suitable for braving any element. An emerging trend in the men’s department is exposed mechanisms. The – St. Lucia’s Hottest Party Spot!

By Gareth S. Jules

he VERVE Bar & Grill is located in the heart of the busy and fast-paced Rodney Bay Village. The bar is owned and managed by Mr. Lamar Sifflet and as he describes it, VERVE represents “energy, life and joy.” This is certainly in keeping with the definition of the word. Verve means vigour, spirit or enthusiasm. This suits the location of the bar; Rodney Bay is definitely the heart and soul of St. Lucia, and it is a place constantly brimming with enthusiasm and energy. 36 DAZZLE

The bar has an ambience like no other. It exudes a party atmosphere that lightens your mood and invigorates the senses. Its flashing lights are something you can’t miss. It will fascinate you and keep you spellbound, and compel you to join the party! VERVE employs a two-for-one pricing strategy that the local patrons can’t pass on. New and regular customers alike have a difficult time passing up a

chance to go to Verve. Customers can now have an opportunity to enjoy prominent placement in a popular location that offers the cheapest prices with excellent customer service. The bar employs regional, award-winning bartenders who pour (no pun intended) their hearts and souls into producing some of the finest cocktails you will find on the island! What also makes VERVE unique is the fact that they occasionally present foreign entertainment along with local acts. VERVE has had the likes of Shall Marshall and Bajan DJ Puffy gracing its stage and it has put on some spectacular parties that are still being talked about today. There is also a convenient parking area. Windward and Leeward Brewery Limited learned of Sifflet’s plans and ideas for the bar and has heavily assisted in branding VERVE using Heineken. Though

Choose the Perfect Swimsuit for Your Body

By Alana M.I. Morgan

W

ith summer just around the corner, many women are no doubt going through the frustration that comes with shopping for swimsuits. In order to help you come up with the swimwear style that’s perfect for you, we’ve put together some tips that should help make it a lot easier to choose the style that’s right for you, regardless of your body type – from the curvier frames to athletic body types, we’re helping you sort through those endless swimwear options.

The Pear Shape If you are blessed with a pear-shaped figure, finding the perfect swimsuit means that you have to try and balance your proportions and get the coverage you need for your lower half. Look for a clean-skirted bottom that falls just below the largest part of your upper leg. 38 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Avoid using a boyshort or thick-banded bottom. The extra fabric will only draw attention to your bottom area. On the other hand, a plunging neckline or eyecatching top draws attention away from your lower half.

Large Bust To find the perfect swimsuit if you have an ample bust, try balancing your proportions and get the coverage you need for your bottom half. Bra-style swimsuits with underwire and adjustable straps provide extra bust support. The thicker the strap, the more support it provides. Tops with higher backs are also a good fit for helping to keep the boobs up. Molded cups provide extra support and are available in many different styles.

Athletic Play up your curves with styles that accentuate your frame. Swimsuits with less coverage help to create the illusion of a fuller figure. You can also try tops or bottoms with bold prints, ruffles and embellishments to add a feminine flair and create the appearance of more curves at the top and bottom. Monokinis can help to create fabulous curves. One-piece swimsuits with slashes or strategically placed cutouts also look great.

Look for swimsuits with sizing similar to your regular bra, including those that go above a D, which are constructed to support a larger bust.

Small Bust For those with smaller breasts that don’t need much support, styles with minimal coverage or embellished detailing are ideal, as well as bows and patterns to create the illusion of a larger bust area. Triangle tops are great to create the illusion of curves, as well as tops with bold prints or embellishments with ruffles. Try to find bra tops and padded push-up tops as they offer extra lift and can create cleavage. Certain halter tops are good options as well. Having a smaller bust always means you can wear tiny scoop tops or bandeaus.

Take a size smaller. The smaller the swimsuit bottom, the fuller and curvier your bum looks. You can also try the tie-side bikini bottom option to enhance your curves and adjust it to your size.

Tummy, No Worries If you want to make your middle look slim or you feel more comfortable covering up, there are a number of one-piece and two-piece suits, such as high-waisted or tankini styles, that help to smooth or cover up your middle. Shirring is miraculous. The gathered fabric hides bulges and creates definition in the waist. A figure-flattering, surplice-wrap silhouette trims the waist with its crossover fabric. If you carry your weight in the lower part of your belly, try a high-waisted suit. They’re fashion forward and fantastic for covering the abdomen.

Curvy For curvy ladies, the key is to highlight your curves while providing sufficient support and coverage. Steer clear of monokinis or string bikinis with thicker ties, which can accentuate your widest areas, if your wish is to keep things minimal. Asymmetrical suits draw the eye up toward the neckline, highlighting the graceful line from a woman’s neck to her collarbone. Colorblocking can help highlight your shape. Retro suits (think high waists and boxy halter tops) are great options as well.

The Virtuoso

Inspiring a generation of Caribbean musicians By Phoebe Fraites

S

inger, songwriter, producer, and astute businessman Sherwinn “Dupes” Brice, has been making tremendous strides in the music industry.

B

orn in St Thomas to Saint Lucian parents, ‘Dupes’ as he is professionally known, spent his first nine years abroad before his family returned to Saint Lucia.

S

herwinn was first introduced to the world of music by his parents - Samuel and Esther Brice. From early, he was influenced by their love for Caribbean music and particularly his mothers’ fondness for R&B and pop music of the late 80s and early 90s. Recognising his appreciation for the art form, Samuel enrolled him in private music lessons where he earned distinctions in Cambridge Music Studies. His deep fascination with music took off at the age of eleven with the gift of his first portable Walkman recorder from his mom. This saw the beginning of a very bright music career.

40 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Upon his return to St. Lucia whilst developing his small business venture Wegosite Internet Cafe in Vieux Fort, Dupes began making waves as a music producer. “I joined the group PCL Krew whilst producing for other acts, a Dr Dre type of thing ya know,” he chuckled. After years of producing for several local acts, namely The Mecca, Shayne Ross, Kayo and Ninja Dan, Dupes decided to pursue a solo artist career. In 2011, he released his first single “Take Me Back This Time” with a music video to accompany. That same year, Dupes and The Mecca recorded and released a total of 72 songs as part of a promotional campaign from Dupes Did It Music entitled “Mecca Mondays”. But it was the passing of one of his eldest cousins, Remus Brice Jr., that would change Sherwinn’s life forever. “After my cousin died, I realised that we’re only here for a time and now was time to focus on Dupes and developing my career,” said Sherwinn. “This decision led to my partnership with Jonelle James to explore and develop the income earning potential of various sectors of the music industry.” Armed with a collection of unfinished songs, the duo set out to collaborate with some of Saint Lucia’s finest musicians; role models who inspired Dupes including Francis “Leebo” De Lima, Ronald ‘Boo’ Hinkson and Zach Popo. “Demos are important,” said Dupes, adding, “I’m a student of Quincy Jones. I studied his career. Michael Jackson always had a demo at hand when he visited Quincy and that was where their magic begun.” Dupes believes that the demo acts as a rough draft and makes studio time more productive. Dupes has many facets to his character. He is humble, smart, well-grounded and has no qualms taking a backseat to savour the talents of some of the musicians who work with him. “It’s nice to have good people on your team to give you the thumbs up when you are performing,” said Dupes. Not that he needs any reassurance, given his exceptional work ethic, his faith and confidence. He categorises his musical genre as Caribbean Pop. “I love R&B music but I see myself as a genre buster because I enjoy playing all types of music,” he explained. Since 2013, Dupes has released five singles - ‘Keep Pressin On’, ‘Your Body’, ‘Dip Pon De Floor’, ‘Guilty’ and ‘Seasons’, all demonstrating his versatility with music videos that always show his love for St. Lucia.

His songs have wowed audiences locally and internationally. Highlights of his career include: • Eleven (11) nominations at the St Lucia Music Awards for and won four (2008) • Six (6) nominations at the Bermuda Underground Music Awards and won one (2010) • His single ‘Your Body’ hit number one on Tempo’s Cross Caribbean Countdown (2013) • Three (3) successful placements in Television and Film: Two on international television networks - Fox and VH1 - and one on a popular fitness series. (2013, 2014) • Awarded two (2) National Youth Awards - Excellence in Performing Arts, Excellence in Technology and Innovation (2015) • Represented E.C.C.O (Eastern Caribbean Collective Organisation for Music Rights) in Germany with Lennon “Blaze” Prosper alongside some of Barbados’ biggest soca/calypso music industry professionals (2015) Although his performance at the Independence Day concert in Vieux Fort ranks as one of his best, Dupes’ stint at the Opening of the 2015 St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival, sharing the stage with Chronixx and Destra was one of the high points of his career. It epitomised his brilliance as an artiste. “It took hours of rehearsals with my dancers, Princess Tashii and Queen B (Onyx Dance Crew), and Evalucian band to improve my stage presence.” He was thrilled by the response of the audience who showed their appreciation by singing along. He described it as “an amazing experience” that filled him with pride. He added, “When I exited the stage and I saw my son and my family and the team, I couldn’t ask for more.” According to Sherwinn, one of our biggest challenges as artists is getting the corporate community and the government to understand the value of the music industry and the strong contribution it can make to St. Lucia’s economic development. Success in the music business depends on an artiste’s ability to market their product effectively. As Sherwinn

explained, “The internet plays a big part of it. Through social media, namely Facebook and Instagram, we post updates, motivational messages and shine a light not only on our art form but other creative avenues. Networking and travelling are equally important. I like to meet and get to know people before I introduce my music to them.” Sherwinn offered sound advice to young, upcoming musicians. “Success is defined by the people you inspire, not by the amount of money you make.” He pointed to the classical genius, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as an example of a man who was committed to his music. “Here was a man who was obsessed and crazy about his music. Little did he know that it would still be making its impact years after his death. Stay creative, work hard on your craft, pursue greatness

and success will eventually come to you.” When he’s not writing or performing, Sherwinn spends time applying the same positive attitude to his family’s businesses Shernell’s Pizza, Global Travel and Par Avion Liquor Store. Sherwinn ‘Dupes’ Brice has certainly made a name for himself and he’s increasing his fan base, not just locally but worldwide. We wish him continued success in the future.
