assion can be defined as an intense desire or enthusiasm for something. Over the past few years, Dazzle Magazine has featured numerous individuals who all have one thing in common. They are passionate about their business ideas and career paths, and they are determined to succeed. This perseverance is one of the defining characteristics of the entrepreneurial spirit and the key to becoming a successful entrepreneur. Confidence is another characteristic that I would like to touch on as I do think it plays a vital role in determining how effective you are going to be in getting your products or service to market. I believe that confidence and passion go hand in hand. As much as you may be passionate about your business idea, you must believe that it will work. You need to have confidence and the ability to sell your product or service properly and effectively in order to persuade potential customers or investors to buy into it. Persuading individuals to purchase your product/service is not only vital, it is definitely one of the major avenues to opening up your initial revenue stream, and will quite likely remain one of the key ways of growing and strengthening your business. Therefore, it should not be taken for granted. This, in a nutshell, is how you convert your passion and confidence into cash. Remember, success doesn’t come overnight. It may take a few sleepless nights to achieve your goal but despite that, continue to persevere and be guided by your passion. Let it drive you forward.

The Nutritious Superfood

I

ts scientific name is Persea Americana but it is commonly known as avocado.

This fruit is esteemed for its high nutrient value and is added to all sorts of dishes due to its tasty flavour and rich texture. These days the avocado has become an incredibly popular food among health conscious individuals. It is often referred to as a superfood, which is not surprising given its health properties. There are many kinds of avocados with different shapes (from pearshaped to round) and colours ranging from green to purple.

Has Way More Potassium than Bananas A nutrient that most people aren’t getting enough of is potassium. Avocados are actually very high in potassium. Potassium is important for the proper functioning and respiration of the body’s cells. It also helps to lower blood pressure by balancing out the negative effects of salt. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. In fact, potassium is essential to the smooth running of nearly all bodily functions. Avocados are loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids . Did you know avocado is a high fat food? Don’t worry it’s the good fat. Seventy seven percent of the calories in avocados comprise of fats, making the fruit one of the fattiest 12 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

plant foods in existence. But they don’t contain just any fat. The majority of the fat in avocados is oleic acid. This is a monounsaturated fatty acid. It is the major component in olive oil and is believed to be responsible for some of its beneficial effects. Scientific studies have shown that oleic acid helps to reduce inflammation and aids in the prevention and treatment of cancer, particularly breast cancer. The fats in avocado are also pretty resistant to heatinduced oxidation. When fats oxidize, they produce stale or rancid odors. Oxidized oils may be harmful to your health. This is one reason why avocado oil is a healthy and safe choice for cooking.

Avocado Extracts Can Help Relieve Arthritis Symptoms Arthritis is a common problem in Western countries. There are many types of arthritis, and these are often chronic problems that people have for the rest of their lives. Multiple studies have shown that extracts from avocado and soybean oil, called avocado and soybean unsaponifiables (components of an oily, fatty or waxy mixture that fail to form soaps when blended with sodium hydroxide (lye) or potassium hydroxide) can reduce symptoms of arthritis of the bones, known as osteoarthritis. Whether or not this effect is due to the avocado itself or the extracts has yet to be determined.

How to Use Instagram to Boost Your Brand and Drive Sales By Imran St. Brice

S

ocial media has become one of the most powerful communication platforms, popular with both everyday people and many of the great leaders of our time.

But what about the entrepreneur trying to launch or grow their business? With over 20 popular social media sites available to users, trying to choose the right one to launch your digital marketing campaign could seem a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, we can provide you with some insight into what is perhaps the most effective of these sites – Instagram - and how you can use it to your advantage. Hosting over 500 million active users scrolling through countless feeds, no matter what kind of goods or service your business offers, you can find 14 DAZZLE

your target audience on Instagram. The following tips should get you off to a good start. First off, it is imperative that your customers or clients feel connected to the individuals behind your company logo. This does not mean that you should make every post a selfie of you in the office. It simply means that using your account to interact with your followers gives them a more realistic way to relate to you and your company. It goes without saying that you should also consider using the comment section to find out what your customers want and what they like. Think of it as an instant survey. Building a relationship with your followers causes a domino effect on your marketing as well. When you treat your customers with care and courtesy, they are more likely to do your marketing for you by recommending your

excellent service or product to a friend. Remember, when you receive ‘likes’ from your followers it’s an indication of their appreciation, so pay attention to them, they speak for your fan base. Furthermore, make your customers feel like they are part of the business; not by letting them crunch your numbers but by requesting that they post photos of themselves using your product or service on social media. No doubt you’ve heard about ‘hashtags’. Keep in mind that they are especially useful. Take the initiative of creating a catchy, relevant hashtag so your followers can use it in their posts. This too can help build an authentic relationship between you and your followers. Call to Action! This is where you test the strength of your following. Leaving a link to your company’s main website in the caption of your post is a great way to let your followers know more about your business and its

more information about your business. Keep the links to a minimum and circulate them every few posts. Speaking of posts, consistency is key in growing an appreciative following. The trick is to post often enough so that your followers know that you are active and concerned about your connection with them. On the other hand, too many posts can have a reverse effect. Besides, if each post is carefully curated there shouldn’t be too many of them filling everyone’s timeline in the first place. On another note, Instagram is a great place to attract and promote your sponsors but first, you will need to seek them out. Don’t be afraid to do so, especially when starting off. Remaining complacent and waiting for sponsors to come to you will leave you with very little to show. Follow up on your efforts by reciprocating; promote your sponsors in some of your posts. By this gesture you show your appreciation and you’re letting your followers know that you are grateful for the support that you receive.

products. This method of sharing also accommodates people who are not currently using Instagram. It’s a great way of drawing in a diverse crowd.

While Instagram has a very large membership, you would be doing yourself and your company a disservice by not taking advantage of the site’s sharing features. Instagram’s ecosystem is not isolated. What this means for you is that you can pool an even larger following by sharing your posts to Facebook and Twitter, among other social media.

But wait, before you go on leaving tons of links for your followers, be mindful that your business’ Instagram account should be sufficiently informative to give users a clear idea of your products or services. Links should provide a gateway for people seeking

Being an entrepreneur means understanding that success is not instant, not even digitally. Bearing this in mind, be patient in executing your social media campaigns and strategies. Eventually, you will get results and be rewarded for your efforts.

Adds Exciting New Dimension to St. Lucia Carnival

E

very year when the carnival season comes around there is usually a lot of brainstorming among band members and organisers about how to ensure that St. Lucia enjoys a safe and sober carnival celebration. Amidst all the fun, alcohol consumption is quite high resulting in persons becoming intoxicated and suffering from hangovers and all its debilitating effects. This year Grace Foods, one of the Caribbean’s largest and most dynamic food and beverage companies, known all throughout the world, joined forces with its St. Lucian distributor, Peter & Company Distribution and Just4Fun, St. Lucia’s largest carnival band, to introduce a groundbreaking new initiative which showed that you don’t have to sacrifice healthy

16 DAZZLE

lifestyle practices or your sobriety in order to play mas and have a great time. PCD through the Grace and Seven Seas brands executed the Grace/ Seven Seas Sober Zones at five major carnival events where attendees were invited to relax and socialize as they reenergized before heading home by sampling Grace Soups and Haliborange Vitamin C packets. Alcohol has been proven to deplete the body of Vitamin C, which is an essential vitamin needed for reducing oxidative stress in the liver. Vitamin C also helps to protect the liver from toxins. Studies have shown that consuming Vitamin C after alcohol intake can help to reduce the effects of a hangover, and as

a result, health experts strongly recommend getting enough Vitamin C, either via supplements or food, before consuming alcoholic beverages. Approximately 400 band members got the opportunity to relax and freshen up in the Sober Zone at each of the five events. Along with the free food and vitamin samplings they were provided with Haliborange Vitamin C + energy flyers and Grace recipe cards. Grace/Seven Seas Ambassadors were also present and took the opportunity to engage health conscious patrons in discussions about the energyboosting and immune system benefits of Haliborange Vitamin C as well as informing them of the extensive range of Grace products available locally.

The Grace/Seven Seas Sober Zone was a huge hit judging by the feedback the company received from the Jut4Fun members who experienced the fun and excitement of being part of it. “They were all very receptive to this initiative and eager to learn about the benefits of using each product. Given the positive response to the zone and the fact that after the first couple of events the patrons started looking forward to the zone at other events, we look forward to this being a regular feature of the carnival season. It is also our hope that it encourages more revelers to stay safe and healthy during the carnival activities,” said Betty – Forde.

Grace has long been a generous sponsor of cultural and sporting activities in the Caribbean, as well as the UK and North America. The company was delighted to build upon this proud legacy by joining forces with Just4Fun and Peter & Company to add a new and exciting feature to St. Lucia’s 2016 carnival festivities. Mrs. Keneene Betty – Forde, Brand Manager for Grace indicated, “Our sponsorship of a Sober Zone took on even greater significance in view of the fact that it was an investment not just in the preservation of St. Lucia’s cultural heritage but also a way of furthering our mission of promoting healthy lifestyle practices in the region. It also gave us an excellent opportunity to highlight the Grace brand in St. Lucia so that more people can become familiar with our products and enjoy a genuine taste of the Caribbean.”

Grace and PCD compliments Just4Fun for welcoming this initiative and look forward to further collaborations aimed at promoting safety and a healthy lifestyle.

“The Sober Zone was conceptualised as a way of helping to ensure that the health and safety of the patrons was made a priority in a season of increased alcohol consumption. They got the opportunity to enjoy some of Grace’s choice products that provide a good balance of protein, vitamins and minerals, and which are vital for healthy living and necessary to boost energy levels,” said Betty – Forde.

Herma DEMACQUE A Royal Voice Making Big Waves by Angela St. Denis

H

erma Demacque is one of St. Lucia’s most vibrant radio personalities. This 21-year old former National Carnival Queen contestant is inspired by the soulful music of India Arie and Nina Simone, and the daily struggles of the ordinary man on the street. Two years ago when she started off in radio, she quickly began making waves and gained the admiration of her fans. A former member of the St. Lucia Youth Parliament, she participated in youth parliamentary debates on two occasions. A confident and eloquent speaker, Herma has big dreams and her aspirations know no bounds. Dazzle Magazine sat with her to get the vibes on what her journey has been like and how she has been enjoying life on the airwaves.

How would you describe Herma Demacque? I am many things - an introvert but social when necessary; a voice that speaks up if everyone else is quiet. A creative soul interested in youth development.

HD and pageantry - how did you get involved in this? Canaries needed a representative for Ms. Independence 2013 so with some encouragement I thought, why not. It was such a rewarding experience that the following year I participated in the National Carnival Queen pageant. Both experiences helped me discover many things about myself, while allowing me to develop on a personal level. 18 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

What were your aspirations growing up? Fashion design and print journalism. I purchased a sewing machine with my first ever pay cheque, not having a clue how to sew. My brother and I used old tee shirts to figure out how the machine worked. Eventually, I took an online class to learn how to sew.

Today you are an announcer on The Wave. How were you introduced to radio? My initial interest in radio was sparked while preparing for the queen show. I had an interview on The Wave with TC Brown and was impressed by his vibe and the way he handled the controls. When WVent was opening, management contacted the National Youth Council (NYC) for young people, and I was recommended for an interview. I attended the interview on Wednesday, met the regional managers on Thursday and was on air by Friday.

What is your response to people who say there is no place for radio? We get into arguments. Radio is adaptable to all new media. We cannot watch TV or use the internet while driving but we can listen to the radio. Radio is not as lazy as TV since it engages the listener to conceptualise and interact in some way. When the power is off or disaster hits, we turn to radio for information.

It’s approaching two years since you started in radio. How has it influenced your life today? It has taught me to be more selfless; never underestimate the power of the medium available to me. I am currently undertaking a programme in media and journalism at Monroe College. The courses I have studied thus far motivate me to want to be a better professional.

Describe your first on-air experience.

What would you say to a young person aspiring to get into the media/radio?

It was frightening! For the first two weeks I felt like I was in over my head. To add to my trepidation, my co-host had a PhD while I was fresh out of college. I could not wrap my mind around what to say, so naturally I made errors. In an effort to improve I gained a serious appreciation for reading.

What’s next for HD?

What do you love most about radio? I am able to connect with my listeners despite being in an empty studio, and it gives me the opportunity to positively influence someone’s day. There are some listeners who call or send text messages so often that when we meet, it seems like we have known each other for ages.

Who are your biggest supporters? Michael Rogers. He provides me with much needed guidance to improve the work that I do by pushing me to better my best. The sound engineer, Philgrim Louisy. He taught me a great deal about sound waves and production. My cousin, Joy Matt, in addition to being family she was my chaperone during both pageants. She is always that voice that says ‘you cannot give up.’ She introduced me to some of the best things I know.

What is most challenging for you? When WVent ceased operations I transitioned to The Wave. Adjusting to the shift from talk radio to music radio; finding the balance of information to fit into one minute segments, and allowing the music to do the talking.

If you are sure this is what you wish to do, learn everything you can about your craft in order to perfect your skills. Build a strong network and prepare yourself for the opportunities.

I have a number of projects in the pipeline personally and professionally. They range from youth development to new career opportunities in addition to radio. Whatever I do I intend to make a positive difference. A more active role in the NYC; in this regard I am considering an executive position. As HD propels herself into the radio landscape, we anticipate that she will continue to be vocal about the causes she feels passionate about. Dazzle Magazine wishes her all the best!

fun facts

Notebook or tablet? Notebook. A book everyone should read. ‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho. Song everyone should listen to. ‘India’s Song’ by India Arie. Favourite location in Saint Lucia. Canaries/Pigeon Island National Landmark. Last book read? Agatha Christie’s ‘And Then There Were None.’

Are You Proud of Your Belly? by Emma Anius Many of us carry excess weight around our midsection, but have you ever stopped to wonder why? There are several different types of belly out there and some people definitely fall into more than one category. Find out what type of belly you have and the best way to combat it.

Poor-Posture Belly Having poor posture is definitely a sneaky culprit when it comes to developing an unwanted belly bulge. This one is mostly noticeable in smaller people as it gives them a little lump in their lower abdominals while the rest of their body is relatively small. Having poor posture causes this pouch because the muscles around your midsection are weak due to lack of engagement. This causes the pelvis to tilt forward more than it should, leading to that awful lower abdominal area protruding forward. 22 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Best exercise to fix: Walking Mind you, not just any walking; while you are walking concentrate on keeping your shoulders straight and your chest high. This will be hard to maintain at first but imagine how great you will look once you have strengthened your core, and your stomach is finally nice and flat.

Stress Belly Stress is known to cause many health problems but did you know having high stress levels could actually lead to a belly pouch too? People with stress bellies have comparatively smaller arms and legs, the belly fat is usually hard, and the individual carrying this excess weight would generally be in a high pressure environment, be it at home or work. This is the best way to identify people with stress bellies

Best exercise to fix: Anything active that helps to relieve stress Some people benefit from a nice long run. Others prefer combat sports such as boxing, and there’s always time to try out some meditation and stretch classes like yoga. Find what works for you and stick to it. Most importantly, ditch the stress!

Best exercise to fix: Put down the beer Maybe not indefinitely, but after the third or fourth round you should probably start to consider having water (having five beers on a night out can easily cost you more than 500 calories). Also, try going for a 40-minute run. Cardio is one of the best exercises to help get rid of a beer belly, so try this at least three times a week to really notice a difference.

Beer Belly The beer belly has to be included because let’s face it, we are in the Caribbean and according to Lil Rick ‘All is Rum’. We all know that alcohol is a big part of anything that happens here. And while it may be responsible for turning a good night into a great night, it does quite the opposite for your waistline. Due to the high caloric content in alcohol, the foods we eat during a night out, and the fact that when you drink alcohol the liver burns away the alcohol instead of fat, are all factors that contribute to that awful layer of fat around our stomachs we call the ‘beer belly.’

Food Belly This is one that affects most of us. The food belly quite obviously comes from eating too much. Everything you put in your mouth contains calories and if the calories aren’t burnt off with exercise, they are stored in the body as fat. So if you are constantly eating and not working out, you will inevitably grow yourself your very own food belly.

Best exercise to fix: Cardio and weight training Cardiovascular training is important because it burns a lot of calories in a short amount of time. Exercises like running, walking, cycling or dancing are great examples of cardio training. Weight training helps to increase lean muscle mass. The more lean muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn when you’re at rest. Even when you’re at rest, your body needs energy for all its internal functions. So combining these two forms of exercise will turn your food belly into a six pack in no time. Become the face of fitness you’ve always wanted to be and work out to gain the belly that’s perfect for you.

Want to Rock the Corporate Catwalk? Try the Simple Blazer! by Menellia Valcent

W

hen it comes to dressing for the office there are a set of ‘guided rules’ to be followed in order to ensure professionalism, not only in behavior but also attire. Traditionally the corporate catwalk is lined with neutral tones of browns, greys, blacks and navy’s, however that’s slowly changing. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the trusted colour scheme should be thrown out the window. If you work in an office environment where uniforms are not mandatory, there are a few simple tips you can follow in order to allow your personality to shine through your attire. Personally, I am thankful that I get to express myself everyday where I work. My sense of style is somewhat eclectic with a mix of traditional … if that makes sense; and I love incorporating a few trending styles into my office wardrobe.

24 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

My go-to staple is the blazer because there’s nothing else that can pull an outfit together. And it adds a flattering appeal to the waistline, ladies - you know that’s something we all strive for. Therefore as a first buy for the newly corporate - or even if you’re a seasoned staff member - I would advise purchasing a blazer. I know it’s cliché, and there are so many cuts and styles you can choose from, but a blazer makes outfit pairing easy. I would also advise on staying within the colour schemes when choosing a blazer as it broadens your options vastly.

Tips on Buying Your First Blazer Measurement Matters Make sure that the shoulders aren’t too broad or fit snugly and the sleeves are not too long. If they end up being too long, just fold them upwards once. If you purchase in-store you have the easy option to try it on. However; if you are purchasing online measure

your sizes before you click that ‘add to cart’ button. Most shopping sites will provide a sizing chart for guidance.

How to Measure Measure your shoulders’ width from behind, ‘shoulder to shoulder.’ To measure your chest, wrap the tape measure around you but not tightly. For the length of your arms, measure from wrist to shoulder.

Quality Over Quantity – in both price and material

a while; years even. When buying in person, check the material and the seams. Does it wrinkle easily? Can you see the thread peeking out at first glance? And if you are buying online, the reviews section is your best friend. Don’t be afraid to splurge on a great piece because it’s versatile and timeless. Bearing in mind that your aim is to create multiple outfits from one staple item, pick a neutral colour, grey, black, navy or even white or cream as your first buy. Above are a few examples of creating three outfits with a simple white blazer. Which one would you rock?

Just because it’s cheap, it could also mean it’s cheaply made. Ensure that your purchase is going to last you

Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s – Now What?

Addressing Support Needs in the Caribbean by Oliviann Weekes

I

magine that you are visiting a friend who cares for her mother. While there you notice that she has just helped her mom take a bath because she is unable to care for herself. Then you notice that her mother repeatedly asks her the same question: Who are you? Calmly, your friend repeats the same answer every time. You are shocked. How is it possible for a mother to be unable to recognise the face of her own child? Sadly, this is the reality of many people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. It is the most common type of dementia, a condition which causes memory loss and creates difficulty with thinking, problem solving and language, as well as the ability to carry out familiar tasks. Patients also experience confusion

26 DAZZLE

with time and place, changes in mood and personality and often misplace their belongings. Though it is a progressive disease, treatments for the symptoms are available and research continues in an effort to find a cure. However, in the Caribbean, Alzheimer’s disease is often mistaken for normal signs of aging. Many people do not always receive the care and attention they need and deserve. As we age, it is normal to sometimes forget to pay a bill, to misplace an item or even forget what day it is. However, it should always be a concern when this type of memory loss becomes persistent and is different from the individual’s normal behavior, and it should be brought to the attention of a medical practitioner.

While the condition has been associated with older folk, there are people in their 40s and 50s who experience the early onset of dementia. As the world becomes more aware of Alzheimer’s and its devastating effects, people across the Caribbean region have recognised the need to raise awareness of the disease in their own countries. As a result, Alzheimer’s Associations and support groups have been formed in order to provide support to families. On February 25 - 27 this year, Barbados hosted the Third Regional Caribbean Conference on Alzheimer’s and Dementia, at which many of these advocates were present. It was noted that out of every ten people living with dementia in the Caribbean, only one has been diagnosed, while in more developed countries only four out of ten are diagnosed. The participants also discussed dementia policy, care of patients and prevention of the disease. The conference representatives came from many islands, including Saint Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis and Cuba, as well as from the United States and the United Kingdom. The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and a number of other organisations were also represented. On September 21 every year, World Alzheimer’s Day is recognized. Around the globe, various organisations focus their efforts on raising awareness of the disease. As the date draws nearer, let us be mindful of those who are suffering either from or due to the effects of Alzheimer’s and do what we can to provide support to our local organisations.

JIMMY FRANCIS J’s Wrap Citi-Home of LowCalorie, Diet-Friendly Fast Food By Gareth S Jules

In

the last few years the majority of new businesses launched in Saint Lucia have been food businesses. We St. Lucians love good food! It’s no wonder that everywhere you turn, there is a restaurant of some sort catering to the varied taste buds of many. One of the key marketing strategies adopted in recent times has been to deviate from the norm of housing a restaurant in a building to investing in a food truck. After all, times are tough and many proprietors are looking for ways to cut costs, such as rent fees and operating overheads. Most of these entities operate during hours when most restaurants are closed. Several of them started operating at the entrance of the Bonne Terre gap, catering to partygoers heading home from latenight fetes or from a night out at Rodney Bay. Quite a few of them offer similar but tasty menus. However, one in particular sets itself apart by its creative cuisine and the proprietor’s focus on providing customers with a healthy option in fast food. That business is none other than J’s Wrap Citi. Jimmy Francis, 43, is the proprietor of J’s Wrap Citi and the brains behind its unique fare. His food truck is located in the Bonne Terre gap in GrosIslet. Jimmy hails from Aurendel Hill, Marchand. At the age of seven he moved to the south where he later attended the Vieux Fort Junior Secondary and Comprehensive Secondary Schools. We all go through challenges in life. Jimmy started school very late, at the age of thirteen. In his early years, he could not read and write. He started his

schooling in standard three and took about a year to learn to read and write in order to sit the Common Entrance Exams. After leaving Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary Jimmy moved on to higher heights, overcoming many hurdles, going from being a star athlete, to becoming one of St. Lucia’s first cellular phone technicians and subsequently opening his own successful food business. We sat down with Jimmy for an exclusive interview during which he shared his life story and recounted his triumphs and challenges on the way to achieving his dreams.

menu. I started off with the wraps but it took a while to catch on. Once people heard about it, they began to spread the word and came back for more. Right now we have a full menu, most of which is unique stuff such as Putin and Quesadilla. We offer a wide variety of menu options. However, wraps are our main thing.

Dazzle: Tell us about yourself. Jimmy: I have always been involved in telecoms. After secondary school I worked at Caribbean Cellular, which was then merged with Cable & Wireless. I started off as a cellphone operator and then became a technician. In 2004, after serving as a technician for about five to seven years, I went to the UK to further my education in electronics and electrical engineering at Lambeth College. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints I had to cut my studies short. But while in London I worked for Vodafone part time and then moved to Canada. There I worked for another telecommunications company called BelCanaa, then I decided to move back home. Upon my return, I worked for The Cell as the technical manager for two years. Thereafter, I decided to work for myself; I wanted to do my own thing. At the age of 21 I started writing proposals for myself, storing them on my computer. Doing my own thing had nothing to do with my technical background. I have always loved cooking. I love cooking for my family and so I decided to start my own cooking business. Dazzle: There is a sharp contrast between your technical background and cooking. Prior to becoming a telecoms technician, did you have any experience as a cook? Jimmy: Growing up, my mother always cooked for the family. I love food so I was always stuck around, tasting. I love my mother very much and have always remained close to her. I got my love for cooking by always being around her. Dazzle: What inspired the creation of J’s Wrap Citi? Jimmy: There’s this friend of mine in Vieux Fort who started doing wraps which became a hit. I approached him and told him that this could be a good thing to do in the north. So I took inspiration and decided to do it my own way, adding more than just wraps to the

We also have another truck near Bank of St. Lucia in Gros Islet, focusing on breakfast. We have been in Bonne Terre for a year and a half but we’ve been in operation for over two years with a staff compliment of seven. Dazzle:What makes J’s Wrap Citi different from the competition? Jimmy: Taste; our menu is quite different. We also focus a lot on customer service. Through my technical background, I had a lot of experience dealing with people, so that makes my drive to focus on customer service much easier. Dazzle: What do you think people find most appealing about your menu?

DAZZLE 29

Jimmy: Our wraps are very unique. It is fast food but it’s a healthier option. That’s what really attracts people to us. Dazzle: What are some of the best compliments you’ve received for your wraps? Jimmy: I always tell my staff to treat people right. Most people buy with their hearts. If you treat your customers right, most likely they will come back. Most times customers come to us and leave with a smile. That matters a lot. People always tell us that they feel good when they buy from us, especially because of the way they are treated. Dazzle: Wrap Citi operates in an upscale area. However, in the current economic climate where many food businesses are closing up shop, does that worry you and what drives you to keep on striving with your business? Jimmy: Success has always been at the top of my list. I am very competitive but fair. I am self-motivated. I want to succeed and leave behind a legacy. That is the one thing on my mind every morning. This is what drives me to do what I do. Dazzle:What are some of the challenges that are the hardest to overcome? Jimmy: Staff is my biggest challenge. You have to deal with different personalities but I am a motivator. I always want to see my staff do their best so I try my best to use my customer service experience to motivate them. Dazzle:What is the most popular item on your menu? Jimmy: The chicken wrap is the most popular item on the menu. However, the chicken quesadilla is right up there giving it competition.

Dazzle: How difficult is it balancing business with family life? Jimmy: It’s a challenge. Because I am self-employed, my wife and my daughter are always with me. My daughter was born on the same day that Wrap Citi opened. She has been with us the whole way through, at times sleeping in our vehicle while my wife and I operate Wrap Citi. We do spend a lot of time together, going for drives and so on. Sleep for me is a luxury right now. When I am not working, I spend my time with them or I am sleeping. They know that this is for a time. We have our goals and we’re trying hard to achieve them so we all try to compromise. Dazzle: What do you do to unwind, apart from spending time with your family? Jimmy: I spend a lot of my time alone. I run a lot and spend a lot of time visualizing where I want to be. I also spend time on the beach meditating. Dazzle: What are Wrap Citi’s long-term goals and objectives? Jimmy: We want to move into a building. We came close to doing so seven months ago but the location wasn’t ideal. We want to move into a building where families can come and sit and enjoy a meal. We also want to expand our menu to accommodate everybody. Dazzle: Any plans to expand to Castries and the out districts? Jimmy: Definitely Castries, very soon. Many customers are asking for a location in town since they travel up north for wraps. We are looking into that right now, trying to find the best available location to operate. Once we obtain that, we will definitely be operating in Castries. Dazzle: What does the future hold for you? Jimmy: I want to open a couple more businesses. I am a serial entrepreneur. I own a car wash and a cleaning business in addition to Wrap Citi. I want to continue to open service oriented businesses. Also, I am schooling myself through the use of the internet to become a motivational speaker. This is something that I really want to do. Dazzle: What advice would you give to anyone wishing to open a food business? Jimmy: It’s hard but what isn’t? If you want something you have to go after it. There may be days where you want to give up, but don’t! Every problem teaches you something. There are challenges but you grow after you overcome them. Afterwards you feel stronger. Just keep at it, talk to yourself and continue to do what you have to do to get where you want to go.

Start by pressing the inside of the collar. You don’t want to leave it flat, but rather enhance the curve of the neck line. To do this, simply round both ends of the collar up so that they meet above the point of the iron.

Step

4

The yoke of a shirt - that little patch of reinforced fabric that rests on your shoulders and connects the front and back panels of the shirt to the collar. To iron this, open the shirt front and unfold the collar so that it stands up. Feed the tappered of the ironing board into the shoulder of the shirt. Kepping the curve of the collar, drape as much of the yoke over the corner of the board before ironing flat and moving onto the other side.

Move on to the cuffs. Unbotton the sleeve and lay it flat on the baord, ironing up towards the shoulder (to help preserve the crease of the double cuff). When that is done, fasten the cuffs before moving on to the sleeve.

Lay the sleeve flat on the board with the seam facing flat towards you. Use the seam as a guide, ensuring that the sleeve fabric is spread out towards the top arm from that point. Gently iron from seam to top arm. if you prefer a crease on the top arm, then simply iron flat along the top fold. If not, iron to the point just a few millimeters before the top fold.

6

Move on to the shirt front. With the bottons unfastened, lay the one side of the shirt flat on the board, ironing up towards the collar. Move on to the opposite side.

Fasten all the buttons of the shirt, flip the collar down into place and hang on a thick shouldered hanger (the type you should be using to preserve the shape of your jackets). This will allow the natural drape of the fabric to smooth out any of the last little ripples in the fabric while the heat and moisture leaves the shirt.

Style Tip Skinny ties do not coordinate well with baggy suits, but they look particularly stylish with carefully tailored suits. Suits with one or two buttons will look great with a skinny tie whereas a three-button suit will cover up more of the tie than most people prefer. A tie bar is likely to cover most of the tie's width. This serves to accentuate the skinny style.

By Dahna Jn. Charles

“Welcome to LifeStyles! I’m Candy!” This is the greeting Choice TV viewers can expect every day, like a burst of sunshine. Candy Nicholas has intrigued St. Lucians with her wealth of knowledge on nature’s goodness and various wellness practices in a bid to help them live healthy and wholesome lives. Naturally, (pun intended lol), Dazzle felt impelled to put her in the spotlight to give our readers a deeper appreciation for this young entrepreneur living life on her own terms. Born in the historic town of Soufriere to Mary Clement Nicholas and Aagee Simpson, Candy is grateful to the community that nurtured her, and to her grandparents, aunts, uncles and older cousins, all of whom played a major role in moulding this poised and articulate young beauty. She attended the Soufriere Infant and Primary schools, and then moved on to the illustrious St. Joseph’s Convent to complete her secondary school education before moving on to Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. Dazzlers, we’re talking about royalty here! Candy is our 2003 Ms. Soufriere and 2004 National Carnival Queen. These victories, she says, opened up many doors for her, most notably her career in the media. She has written for St. Lucia’s top newspapers, The STAR and The VOICE, and was also a reporter for Helen Television Systems (HTS). 38 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Moreover, Candy has proven to be a risk-taker, a gogetter and a woman bent on pursuing her dreams, and doing so fearlessly. After her stint with HTS, Candy made the deliberate decision to become an entrepreneur. “It’s not that I didn’t want to work. This isn’t about shirking responsibility. I don’t care if I work 25 hours a day but I want to do things on my own terms and my own time,” she says. (We feel you girl!) Candy is a certified nutritional counsellor, a qualification she earned from Trinity College, in the United States and is currently pursuing her LLB at the University of London. With that mindset Candy took on her first venture which was a lingerie boutique called Miss Behavin’ (clever name right?) located in a quiet part of Rodney Bay Village, near Elena’s (talk about creating mystery and excitement). However, she felt she needed to find a way to make her lifestyle her career and in 2009 Organica was birthed. It was a one-stop health food store offering high quality, hard-to-source items for every health nut or those looking to embark on a journey to better health. Dazzle sat down with Candy to learn more about her lifestyle and her journey to becoming an entrepreneur, and it was quite a pleasure to do so.

Dazzle: What led you to embrace a healthier lifestyle? Candy: I’ve always been very conscious of what I eat, from a young age. but at the age of 13 I read a book my neighbour was throwing out called ‘Back to Eden’ by Jethro Kloss. I became fascinated with the concept that you can alter your health, and in my case at the time I had started breaking out. My aunt was buying every skincare product under the sun to help but they never worked for me. I was intrigued by the idea of being able to improve my health and skin by eliminating certain foods from my diet and increasing the intake of other foods. I began putting some of these into practice and my skin cleared up!

www.dazzlethemag.com

DAZZLE 39

Isn’t she lucky to have started that young? So many of us are struggling at a late stage in our lives to make these critical changes and this lady has been blessed to have so many years of practice that now it has become almost effortless. Bet you’re wondering if this health nut still uses modern medicine. Candy: Modern medicine does have its place. It is important for us to bring the two together to ensure good health. I still go to the doctor to get a diagnosis but most times we discuss natural treatments as an alternative to pharmaceuticals.

fun facts What you normally do if you have 30 minutes of free time. Reading or meditating. Favorite indoor/outdoor activity? Hiking in nature. What’s something you learnt last week? I learnt that there are fruit bats and vampire bats. Sadly this was after one flew into my home… Favorite local dish? Provisions with saltfish, especially plantain and sweet potatoes. Back to Eden started it all and since then Candy has not been able to keep away from literature of this nature, as she continues to educate herself and make changes where necessary to ensure optimum health. As mentioned earlier, the marrying of this natural lifestyle with career aspirations is what brought us Organica. Sadly, Organica is no more. Chuckling, Candy attributes Organica’s short stay to her being 40 DAZZLE

too enthusiastic at a time when the healthy lifestyle and health food craze were still very foreign to our island. If you miss Organica, it just might be making a comeback so keep your fingers (or celery stalks) crossed. Dazzle: What challenges have you encountered as a young female entrepreneur? Candy: I think that this society is intrinsically misogynistic and we don’t even realize it. We don’t seem to treat female entrepreneurs or female bosses in the same way we treat males. And it’s not just an issue of how men treat women but women also do it to each other.

lifestyle practices. People just didn’t know and they didn’t know that they didn’t know. It was clear to me that I needed to create a medium for people to be educated about those things. So I started a show which aired during the lunchtime news on DBS called ‘Health Kick.’ It became highly popular practically overnight, which let me know how much people were craving that type of information. I also met people who let me know that they were actually putting the information into practice, which was very gratifying. And I’ve always loved media. It’s where I started my professional life. So in essence LifeStyles was created to fill the void that Health Kick left. The name ‘LifeStyles’ was carefully chosen to encompass all aspects of daily living, including wholesome and safe recreation i.e. liming. Also, the show’s scope will be expanding soon, and by that we mean out of the studio! As of September 11th the show has now gone to 30 minutes and will eventually go to an hour. We’re now filming on location at various beautiful properties on the island.

I also experienced larger companies coming into my store to interrogate me about what it was I was doing, attempting to learn the trade secrets, have people come into the store to write down information on products, and so on. Importing her products into Saint Lucia was also an issue, which was a consequence of the business being ahead of its time. For instance, if customs officers had no idea what the organic product was, it would be placed in a category with a high duty. This, in addition to her purchasing high quality products for sale, significantly affected the cost of doing business. Also, Candy quickly learnt that she’s not a Jack of all trades. For, instance, having wasted a lot of money on marketing, i.e. wrong media, wrong avenues and not getting enough returns on her investment, she has vowed to let the experts handle such aspects of the business and stick to what she is trained in. Hi, Candy! We’re Dazzle Magazine! *wink* Dazzle: Where did the idea for ‘LifeStyles with Candy Nicholas’ come from? Candy: I realised that people needed to be educated about how they were eating and what it was doing to their health. We have so many cases of cancer and diabetes here and all of these are related to diet and

Candy: I’ve been informing people and they’ve been listening but they want to see. So now I want to show them. Rather than just telling them the herbs to take, I want to go into the garden to show them what it looks like. I want to show them the chiropractor working on me and I am very happy to be the guinea pig. (LOL) In addition to making new changes to the show, Candy wants to transform her certification in nutrition and extensive knowledge into a lucrative consultancy. She’s also eager to see how LifeStyles will grow, especially with regional networks indicating their interest in carrying the broadcast. We don’t see why not!

We at Dazzle would like to wish this devoted, young visionary all the best on her journey and applaud her for taking life by the horns and crafting her own niche!

TEMPERED GLASS

Does Your Phone Really Need a Tempered Glass Screen Protector? by Alana M.I. Morgan

Y

ou’ve bought a new smartphone. For a moment you marvel at how wonderful your device is, with all the features and apps you could possibly need. Once you get over just how awesome your new phone is, something else pops into your head; protection. It’s important to make sure it stays in the best possible condition.

42 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

You may or may not have heard of ‘tempered glass’ screen protectors but here’s some basic info you need to know about them, what they can do for your phone, and whether or not it’s worth it to buy one. Tempered glass screen protectors are made by heating the glass and then cooling it very quickly. This type of glass breaks differently than normal glass, creating

more rounded edges of glass pieces instead of the jagged shards that regular glass creates. A tempered glass protector is a multi-layered screen protector. It has a bottom layer of absorbent silicon, PET film and an optically clear adhesive tempered glass and oleophobic coating in that order. Tempered glass is more heat resistant than regular glass, so your phone is less likely to be damaged by heat. Unlike tempered glass protectors, plastic screen protectors are much more likely to get scratched.

Tempered glass protectors are up to five times thicker than standard plastic protectors. The smoothness and clarity of the tempered glass makes the screen protector feel more like your actual smartphone screen than a plastic screen cover would. Generally, tempered glass screen protectors are easier to insert on your phone than plastic screen protectors. YES! It is certainly worth getting one, especially if you’ve had the problem of a cracked phone screen and want to prevent it from recurring. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
