t Dazzle Magazine we take pleasure in promoting entrepreneurship. Encouraging individuals to start their own businesses, and sharing useful information to help equip them with the knowledge they need to succeed, is what we do. I know it could be discouraging and challenging to commence a business venture in this tough economy, however if one has all their ducks in a row success is possible. I do believe that one should endeavour to create their own business. At the same time, I also understand that not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. In such a case, one still has the option of becoming a competent and top-class professional in whatever career they choose. Prior to starting Dazzle Magazine, I was not interested in entrepreneurship. However, circumstances caused me to change my mind in October 2016. From then on I’ve never looked back. It is now six years since Dazzle Magazine has been in existence and I can’t imagine where I would have been if I hadn’t taken the entrepreneur plunge. Entrepreneurship has given me the ability to be innovative and to play my part in helping to bring about social change. In the process, I’ve learned how to make sound business decisions together with my core team, without having to go through any cumbersome managerial hierarchy. Just like any other business, Dazzle Magazine has had its ups and downs, however, because of our determination to succeed we continue to forge ahead and release captivating issues showcasing the transformative power of entrepreneurship in St. Lucia. With that said, I wish to thank everyone for the support over the years. Once again, we’re delighted to bring you another fascinating issue and hope you have an enjoyable read. Please feel free to “Like” or leave feedback on our Facebook page or Instagram pages @dazzlethemag. Rankin Morgan Publisher/Managing Editor

uavas, also known as “sand plums”, are said to have originated from Central America. Although they are more commonly known as a key ingredient in jams and jellies, guavas have a plethora of health benefits, many unbeknownst to the average consumer. Here are just a few benefits if you include guava in your regular diet.

Manages Blood Pressure

Immunity Booster

Guavas contain significant amounts of Vitamin A. This helps reduce vision degradation as well as prevent eye diseases such as cataracts. Guavas may not be as Vitamin A rich as carrots but they still provide enough that you should consider having them as a regular snack.

This delectable fruit is a rich source of Vitamin C, even more so than oranges. Being that Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, regular consumption of guavas leads to a robust immune system and allows the body to recover from illness quicker. Get sick often? Well, adding guavas to your diet can be the solution.

Diabetes–Friendly Diabetes is a huge health issue in St. Lucia, with the country having one of the highest rates per capita of diabetes in the world. Guavas serve as a sweet solution to managing our glucose levels. The high amount of dietary fibre in guavas aids in regulating sugar levels and prevent spikes in diabetic patients. 10 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Apart from diabetes, guavas also help with blood pressure management. The dietary fibre cleans out arteries and blood vessels. This reduces the likelihood of high blood pressure as it helps regulate adequate blood flow throughout the body.

Easy on the Eyes

Weight Loss Healthy snacking between meals is critical for active weight loss. The ideal snack gives you a quick boost of energy while providing adequate nutrients. Therefore a vitamin-rich fruit like guava is the perfect snack and since it contains fibre, eating one can keep your stomach full long enough until your next meal. So why not grab a guava today?

BE A BUDDY NOT A BULLY: How the Tapion school is combating bullying among children

B

ullying is a serious issue both locally and globally. Reports of students committing suicide under pressure from the effects of bullying have become an all too regular occurrence. Whilst there have been no such reported tragedies locally, the issue of bullying in schools is quite pervasive. One school in the North – The Tapion School – has made its position clear on the issue with an Anti-Bullying Movement which commenced with a Kids Against Bullying event on June 28, 2018. The event featured engaging readings and thought provoking lessons by Loverly Sheridan who is a published local author of a book against bullying that is fittingly entitled ‘Be a Buddy not a Bully’. Kidfriendly performances by Ezra D’Funmachine and Teddyson John were also highlights of the event. ‘Buddy Up! Kids Against Bullying’ is the work of parents Shawnella Walters and Alana Morgan, along with Anya Alexander. Their passion for this movement came out of experiences with their own children witnessing as well as being victims of bullying at their previous schools. 12 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Other schools, with the push from Ms. Sheridan and support from various entities and private citizens passionate about the cause are also planning similar events. Artist Jonathan Gladding started off with the Tapion School by building a Buddy Bench which was unveiled at the event in June. The bench is more than just a decorative piece for the school yard… it serves as a place where saddened or bullied children can sit with a friend to seek encouragement and solace, therefore fostering togetherness and working towards eradicating bullying. If you would like information on how to plan your own Kids Against Bullying event email BuddyUp! at buddyupstlucia@gmail.com

Yvonne Layfield

Kako Organics All-Natural Skin Care for that Perfect Glow Vibrant. Full of life. Genuine. Passionate. All of these qualities spring at you when you come across Yvonne Layfield, the mastermind behind Kako Organic Products.

K

ako produces a wide array of all-natural skin-care products, from deodorants to face scrubs and more. In the words of Yvonne, “People don’t want just a product, they want an experience.” And that’s exactly what she intends on delivering. Her journey to realising her dreams involved several years of travel onboard cruise ships and yachts. It was a long road paved with hard work, sacrifice and dedication, but, most of all, with PASSION. Dazzle: What motivated you to launch Kako Organic Products? Yvonne:I’ve always had a passion for meeting people, skin care and the overall care of a person’s beauty. So the question was, how could I use what I’m good at to benefit others? That’s how Kako started. Dazzle: As with any budding business, having the idea is one thing, while making it functional is another. How did you pull it off? Yvonne: On an island like St. Lucia, I’d see tons of produce lying around, going to waste, so I’d sample a few ingredients and mix them and then apply them on myself using sea salt as a base. Then I used them 14 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

on friends. Before long, people started raving about it and then it all just blew up. Once they gave it a try, they loved it. Dazzle: No doubt, it requires a lot of experience to branch off on your own. Tell us some more about how you gained necessary experience in this field? Yvonne: I’ve worked in the field of beauty for 19 years. My training started off at the Joan Price Training Centre in Central London. I then came back to St. Lucia and helped in opening the Windjammer Spa. Since then I’ve gone back and forth between the UK and home. A highlight of my career is that I’ve managed 5-star spas like MacDonald Old England for two years and then Ti Kaye Spa in Anse La Raye. Once my contract was done in 2015 I started KaKo. Dazzle: What was it like working as a beauty therapist with international, high-end brands like Decleor and Elemis, and on cruise ships? Yvonne: Onboard the cruise ship you were provided with intense training that involved a complete experience centred on a particular product that you’d have to market. That would teach you how to create an experience for your clients around your own product. One of the key things I learned was that you must be ready to take charge yourself and nurture your own business because you have staff depending on you to make the most of what you have.

fun facts Would you rather own a jet ski or a helicopter? Helicopter. If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Make everyone love each other. Favourite dish? Green fig and backs

Dazzle: Now that you’ve got your own business, what are some of the main challenges you’ve encountered? Yvonne: Financing and learning the skills of marketing. Most of my clients I’ve had from day one, so they already knew about KaKo. Although I have thousands of followers and a decent online presence, I'd go out and still meet people who don't know about my brand. Also, trying to introduce natural skin

care has been difficult as people are already used to artificial products. What I’ve noticed about Kako is that it continues to retain clientele, and since they order frequently I have to manage the workload on my own. While that puts me under huge pressure, I can still breathe easy and persevere because of all my rigorous training over the years. Dazzle: How do you plan on growing and improving Kako? Yvonne: The next level is a store in the UK. I want it to be a full experience of sight, sound, smell and touch in a way that makes you want to know more about Kako. I’d even like to give people the chance to create their own mixes … or to have it done for you while you enjoy a beverage till it’s ready. I’d like to fulfill this dream, hopefully in the next four years. Dazzle: The natural resources you need are more easily available in St. Lucia than in the UK. How do you intend to make that venture work on foreign soil? Yvonne: I’m working towards having as much land as possible where I can grow my own crops, dry freeze them and have them shipped to the UK as raw and natural as possible. So everything that I use as ingredients will be shipped over to me. Dazzle: With so much going on in your world, what’s the one thing that keeps you motivated through the difficulties? Yvonne: My daughter. She’s my biggest fan. I do it because I want her to see that dreams can come true and that anything is possible once you keep at it. It’s not an easy job to do. People contact me night or day and I respond as quickly as possible so that within 24 hours their order is ready. For that to be done I need to be working at it 24/7 until I get to a point where I can hire staff to work alongside me. But for now these are the demands of the job that I have to meet. Dazzle: You’ve obviously learned quite a lot over the years. If you were to sum it up in a few words of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, what would you say to them? Yvonne: Don’t give up, whatever it takes, just don’t give up. Currently the holder of a diploma in beauty therapy and cosmetology from BABTA, Yvonne has her eyes set on achieving much more in the future. We wish all the best and lots of success with her endeavours!

Basic Table Etiquette: a Quick Guide

H

ere’s the situation; you pick up your phone to find that you are invited to dinner at the island’s most prestigious hotel with a group of acquaintances. There’s one problem though - your table etiquette isn’t up to par, and you’ve already accepted the invite. So what do you do next? Keep reading to find out what you need to know about basic table etiquette. While this is not a comprehensive guide, these basic tips will help you feel more comfortable at seemingly intimidating dinner settings. It’s important to note that these norms vary slightly depending on your region.

Phones Down As in many social settings, being distracted by your mobile phone can be a huge turn off to whomever you are in company with. So as a sign of respect, keep your phone tucked away while you and your dinner companions enjoy each other’s company.

Choosing Your Eating Utensils A good rule of thumb to follow when choosing utensils to start eating is to always begin with the utensils furthest away from the plate and work your way toward those closest to the plate. If you see the

host or hostess doing something different, you may follow his or her lead. The important thing is not to make yourself unduly conspicuous.

Avoid Noisy Chewing While eating, you’d want to avoid drawing attention to yourself while being respectful by chewing with your mouth closed. Making unpleasant chewing sounds at the dinner table is a surefire way to make everyone around you uncomfortable. While it’s acceptable to have small conversations over dinner, always chew and swallow your food before responding, for obvious reasons.

Pay Attention to the Little Things Before you dig in, remember to keep your elbows off the table, while also maintaining good posture. Secondly, it’s usually more acceptable to try a little bit of everything on your plate instead of finishing off any one thing right away. Don’t forget to politely ask someone to pass something to you, especially if it’s out of your reach. Now that you’re acquainted with the basics of table etiquette, it’s important to remember that most ‘rules’ would vary depending on your location, so it’s wise to be informed on all fronts. Happy dining!

A Simple Guide to Pitching Your Business Idea

W

ith more and more people taking the bold step to become entrepreneurs, there is a greater demand for useful advice and information about starting a business. As a budding entrepreneur, the more preparation you put into launching your business, the greater your chances of success. One of the most important steps in gaining financial support for your business is The Pitch. The pitch is a presentation of your ideas to a potential investor or financier. Below are a few pointers that will help in perfecting your pitch.

Do Market Research Market research involves gathering information from your potential market i.e. the likely customers for your goods or services. It includes studying your potential target consumers and understanding their likes and dislikes, whilst observing distinctive trends and patterns in the market. Diligent research will give you better insight into your target market and make you more confident about achieving your goals. By 18 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

presenting detailed evidence that you have conducted thorough research, this will demonstrate to potential investors that you have a good understanding of the market and reassure them that you know what you are talking about.

Prepare detailed financial projections Investors will also want to see detailed figures regarding the income-generating potential of your business. They will expect to see comprehensive projections of all costs, revenue and cash flows. They would also want to know what is in it for them, when will the business realize a profit, and what will be the return on their investment. It is important to be honest about start-up costs and your ability to deliver. Requesting large sums of money without indicating the purpose for which those funds are intended could be a turn off to your potential investor. On the other hand, if you understate the amount of money you need to try and make your pitch more attractive your business could later run into cash-flow problems and eventually fail.

Practice makes perfect. Go over your pitch with family and friends. Practice it in front of your mirror. Organize your talking points. Prepare flash cards with your main points so that you can refer to them during the presentation. Your delivery should be thorough but as succinct as possible. Body language is important. Practice maintaining good posture and tone. Even if you feel nervous, it is important to maintain an appearance of confidence. Anticipate questions. Have answers prepared in advance for questions that are likely to arise. Prepare backup documents and data to support those answers.

Perfect your presentation Even with an excellent business plan and a product or service that you have confidence in, presenting your idea can be a nerve-wracking experience. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind on the big day.

Following these guidelines will take you several steps closer to realizing your dream of a successful business. It cannot be overstated how important it is to do your market research thoroughly, and to be fully prepared with detailed financial information in your presentation if you want to land an investor. Remember, you need to ensure that you come across as knowledgeable and confident on the big day. Good luck!

Gregory Junior Sydney Simplifying Everyday Life through Quick Delivery

“The life we live is a busy one.” For most of us this becomes increasingly true as days go by.

I

n the hustle and bustle of daily life it’s easy to lose track of the small tasks that need to be done. Realising this, many new companies have focussed on helping their customers perform those tasks with greater ease and convenience. This is precisely what Gregory Junior Sydney had in mind when he conceptualised Quick Delivery, an official courier service that’s all about convenience. His first interest was quantity surveying, a career he aspired to after seeing buildings being constructed from the ground up on his way to school with his mom; the person whom he credits for his innate desire to be successful.

Gregory would later go on to further his studies in that field at SALCC (formerly Morne Tech) and the University of Reading in England. He has since become an established entrepreneur in his own right, but prior to his breakthrough in business, he first had to overcome quite a few hurdles. Dazzle had the pleasure of chatting with him about his experiences.

20 DAZZLE

Dazzle: Describe the process from conceptualising the idea for quick delivery to it becoming a reality. Gregory: Like I always say, necessity is the mother of all invention. In 2009 I was sitting in my office doing a project plan for the Mardini Building in Rodney Bay. Since I had a tight deadline I couldn't go out to get

www.dazzlethemag.com

lunch, although I was hungry. That’s when I thought to myself we really need a service that can deliver your food for you. That same weekend I wrote up a business plan for what would become Quick Delivery. But I pondered on it for a while and bounced the idea off of a few people whom I got tons of positive feedback from. One of my friends who co-owned Route 69 with me, convinced me to start Quick Delivery before someone takes the idea and make it their own. Within a few days of her telling me that, I went out and got branded shirts, I put out ads for new staff and it took off from there. At that point we had no clientele, and with limited finances we couldn't do much marketing outside of word of mouth. We operated for a sixmonth period and in that time I used the experience as market research. We closed down in 2013 so that I could continue doing my construction work and save up to relaunch the business four years later. Now we’ve been operating for 14 months consecutively. Despite the challenges, we’re here to stay… and since we did a full year we understand how the different seasons work.

s t c a f fun

Your number one quote? “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” -Albert Einstein First thing you’d do with one million dollars? Make love on it (lol). Least favourite thing to do? Everything I do, I like to do it. What app do you use most on your phone? Whatsapp. Dazzle: What’s the most difficult challenge you’ve encountered since starting up Quick Delivery and how did you overcome it? Gregory: Knowing where to start, and financing. We started constructive planning with the assistance of a business coach at the end of 2016 to launch in March 2017. But when I first started off in 2013, that money wasn’t available to me at the time. I’d send my business plan to various banks but got turned down because they don’t finance new businesses. But the economy

www.dazzlethemag.com

DAZZLE 21

cannot grow if small businesses don't get financed. It’s like what Einstein said: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." So things will only yield the same results if small businesses keep getting turned down for something as crucial as financing. The other thing; knowing where to start. In 2017 that was the challenge for me because I then had the financing but I had no idea how to get started. With entrepreneurs, we always have the idea but to execute it is something difficult. Through various contacts I met up with Carissa Daniel, a business coach from Trinidad. She coached me for about three months before I started operating the business. And because I had a coach, everything became clearer and began to materialise as time went on, despite the initial pressure. I’d advise anyone planning on starting a business to get a business coach to really get the ball rolling. Dazzle: How do you deal with customer feedback and what does it mean to the company? Gregory: If feedback was equivalent to money, I’d be one of the billionaires in the world. People really love the service. Recently we served a foreign national who said that we showcased the best customer service that they’ve experienced in St. Lucia. Dazzle: What about the negative feedback that you get? Gregory: We get very little but the negative feedback is always more appreciated more than the positives. Whichever customer gives us negative feedback, we always work towards the goal of making them regular, satisfied customers. One particular occasion, a food delivery took an unusually long time to get to the customer. It was a time where anything that could go wrong, did go wrong. And it happened to the wrong person because they were extremely hungry and the food got to them late, and it was cold by then. We sought to mend the relationship so as to avoid them having a bad impression of the brand. It was important to us that they have only the best memories about us. We treat the negative reviews with more urgency and respect because there’s an opportunity to make things better. Dazzle: What are your strategies for efficiently maintaining a time-sensitive business like Quick Delivery? Gregory: Planning is everything. Some orders you can get done right away but most of them are placed within a detailed plan with routes, estimated times and the nature of the deliveries. It’s a given that our drivers must know the routes to ensure that we 22 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

save time and money while on the go. As for dealing with traffic, we have various checkpoints that we can contact to determine how heavy traffic is and whether or not it’d be wise to take an alternative route to ensure a speedy delivery. We always let the customer know if there will be any delays and we let them decide whether or not they’d want to use the service at that time. Dazzle: In the near future what can we expect from you, as well as Quick Delivery? Gregory: For me, I want to keep being the great person that I am; peaceful, helpful to others. As for Quick Delivery, the plans could be materialising soon. We plan on getting it done by the grace of God, and me being a go-getter with a solid team around me, we’ll make it happen. There’s lots that we want to offer, so for now I’d say stay tuned to see the progress come through! We hope that Gregory sees all his plans come to fruition in the near future!

Use Hashtags to Market Your Business More Effectively

#

HashtagsAreAmazing. What started as Twitter’s method of connecting tweets through keywords has now become one of the marquee tools of social-media marketing.

Hashtags have been used to promote things as simple as the #MannequinChallenge, to full-scale campaigns like the #MeToo movement. For any entrepreneur attempting to improve their social media presence, hashtags are an invaluable asset. However, as with every tool, it has to be used strategically in order to be effective. To this end, we are pleased to share with our readers some helpful tips on how to maximize the effect of hashtags.

Know the Platform Hashtags are commonly used on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook but each platform has a different set of rules. Tweets allow for a maximum of 180 characters 24 DAZZLE

per post, so one or two relevant hashtags is ideal. For Instagram, up to 30 hashtags can be included, however, for improved engagement, 12-15 tags is the suggested range. Facebook has no limit on post length but don’t overuse this by cluttering posts with tags. When in doubt just remember K.I.S.S. (Keep It Short & Sweet).

Using more hashtags specific to your business (e.g. #yourbusinessname, #yourtagline) will increase your reach and overall visibility.

Call to Action If you want your own unique hashtags to gain traction, provide your followers with opportunities to use them e.g. to promote an upcoming event or as part of a contest. By prompting your followers to use your hashtags, they remain your active followers and promote your business on their individual profiles. Treat a hashtag as if it is a conversation starter, because that’s what it is effectively.

Avoid General Hashtags When adding hashtags to your posts, do a quick check to see the posts that are associated with the tags you wish to use. General tags like #Success and #Business will have millions of posts associated with them. This

So to conclude, when hashtags are used effectively, they can give your business visibility well beyond your current engagement. Moreover, entrepreneurs need to master the celebrated hashtag in order to maintain a connection with their target audiences. #GoodLuck

H

ow do you define success? A quick Google search will show that the word has two basic meanings: ‘the accomplishment of an aim or purpose’ or ‘the attainment of popularity or profit.’ Most people would be able to identify with either of these meanings. Dazzle recently had the privilege of interviewing Ottis Effs, the General Manager of Real Foods Inc. the company that operates the St. Lucia franchise of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). The eldest of four children of a Jamaican dad and Saint Lucian mom, Ottis has gained extensive managerial experience working both in St. Lucia and overseas. During our chat with him, we discovered that not only is Ottis a highly motivated and thriving businessman, he has discovered that there is a further way of experiencing success that can be even more satisfying. He explained how he has been able to achieve it. Dazzle: How did this journey start off for you? Ottis: Well, first of all I attended the best school on the island: Saint Mary’s College (laughs). Samarian for life! After that I completed my A Levels at SALCC before moving on to the Student’s Accounting Centre in Trinidad. I studies there for two and a half years, after which I moved to London to finish of studying over the next three years. Dazzle: What was your experience like working in London? Ottis: While in London I was very lucky to have worked as an Accountant. But at that time in my life it was a real challenge for me. Dealing with unpleasant situations, the cold, dreary weather, being away from home and not having that safety net made it worse. I knew that I wanted to be an accountant but I didn’t want to be doing it in that setting. I do appreciate gaining that experience, but it wasn’t the end for me. I didn’t see it as the place I wanted to be forever. It didn’t make me as happy as I could’ve been.

What really brought me back home was the loss of a family member. She was a cousin that I grew up with, more like a sister to me. Even though I got to travel a lot and gain useful experience, there was just that void that needed to be filled. And coming home to my family fixed that for me. Since coming home it’s been a huge improvement for Ottis, but not without its own troubles. Dazzle: How would you describe your career and what does it require of you as a professional? Ottis: It’s quite hectic; you have lots of fires to put out. Running four restaurants of an international brand with its own standards can be very stressful. Anything can go wrong at anytime and you need to be able to remain composed and respond to that issue quickly and effectively. With two hundred team members on staff, all with different backgrounds, cultures and mindsets, there are also personality clashes. Which means you must foresee them to prevent this and maintain harmony. Dazzle: As a General Manager, how do you inspire your team? Ottis: By trying to ensure that the environment is fun and not just all work. It is a very serious job but we try not to take ourselves so seriously. Always being able to lighten the mood at work allows them to keep coming in without dreading it. I would want them to feel how I feel coming to work. We try to create a culture where you know it’s a fast-paced job but it’s also fun, there’s room for you to grow and learn. It feels like a family. Dazzle: What would you say is your biggest accomplishment so far? Ottis: Being in a position that’s challenging but fulfilling, and liking what I do is important. It’s not a drag to go to work every day and I think that that is a big accomplishment. It speaks to a level of happiness and I equate that to a level of success. If you're happy with what you're doing then I think you've found some measure of success.

www.dazzlethemag.com

DAZZLE 27

Dazzle: What are your strategies for keeping organised? Ottis: My phone and calendar. But for me, keeping organised also means having a clear mind. Self care is absolutely important after a long day of work. It allows you to process and think better once you get back to your working routine. Being able to set aside an hour or two in a day just to do something I love is important. For me, I collect music on vinyl and CD. On the lighter side I’m getting into photography and aerial photography as a hobby, and occasionally scuba diving. It’s not just up to me though, my team at work also help keep me on par by taking away some of the stresses that I’d have to face. Even having an understanding family is important when trying to be efficient at work. Dazzle: How have you been able to lead the way in disaster preparedness for KFC St. Lucia? Ottis: After noticing how the recent weather events affected Dominica and St. Maarten we lent a lot of support to them in helping them get back on their feet. That prompted us to step up our game where disaster preparedness is concerned. We’ve developed a disaster preparedness team made up of various staff members who are assigned to specific things; staff, infrastructure, products and warehousing, business continuity and so on. It’s a plan of action to prevent as much damage as possible, as well as a means of a

Most interesting thing you saw this week? Golden State Warriors beating the Cavs. If you have one hour of free time, how do you spend it? Bass turned up. Taking in the view from my balcony, listening to music, most probably some Bob Marley, with a glass of wine. What was your childhood dream? I think it’s still a dream… I’d like to fly! ... swift recovery and return to regular activities. Most of the initiatives taken were developed locally and came from our own experiences. However, we try to keep up with the best practices so that we are prepared for any natural hazard; fire, earthquake, flood etc. Dazzle: How have you managed to change or improve upon the brand since becoming General Manager? Ottis: Maintaining the brand standards; food, taste, product quality and safety, and these are big things for us. I love what KFC is doing outside of restaurant walls, in giving back to the community with sponsorships for education, sports and even cultural events like carnival. You can see KFC become more a part of the fabric of the society with these things. That’s what my team and I have been able to maintain and hopefully improve. Dazzle: How do you foresee change or improvement for KFC within the next years? Ottis: We want to grow accessibility by adding one more store. There are still a couple more renovations to be done to improve the face of the brand just a bit. All of which should be done in about a year and a half. Deliveries are also another thing that we are looking into, but to execute it well we must approach it with patience! With a few more qualifications in his sights (a Master’s of Science & Accounting and an MBA with a Concentration in Marketing), Ottis is well on his way to achieving more success. We wish him all the best in his endeavours!

RECAP

Dynasty Review: Remake Series an Emotional Roller Coaster

A

CW reboot of the 1980’s series, Dynasty has taken its audience by storm. Filled with short-lived relationships, family drama, affairs, substance abuse, action, bad business deals and a racially and sexually diverse cast of characters, Dynasty is nothing short of exhilarating. From inception, the audience is introduced to the show’s protagonists. Heiress Fallon Carrington (Elizabeth Gillies) and her brother, Steven Carrington (James Mackay) are summoned by their father, Blake Carrington (Grant Show) to meet his soon-to-be wife, and their new step-mother, Cristal Flores (Nathalie Kelley). With her heart set on her dream job, the COO position in her family’s multi-billion-dollar corporation, Fallon gets the shock of her life when her father gives the job to his former secretary and his new wife, Cristal. Feeling betrayed, this alone causes a domino effect of trouble for the family and all associated parties.

Watching Dynasty has been a roller coaster of emotions for me. Seeing characters develop, stories unfold and the untimely cliffhangers have all added to the glamorous bouillon that is Dynasty. If you enjoy intense drama, Dynasty is a definite must watch!

The Mobile Tech - A smart solution at your convenience

Y

ou’ve heard it before, “We live in an era of technology” and in 2018 this couldn’t be more true. Our phones and mobile devices have become extensions of ourselves. It’s also true that sometimes, no matter how careful we are, accidents happen and our devices get broken, cracked or seemingly damaged beyond repair. The typical solution would be to wait several days to get your device back from a repair shop. For most of us that isn’t the preferred option. This is where The Mobile Tech -created by Arkim Albertine- comes into play. Repairs are completed in as little as 20 minutes. The best part? The Mobile Tech comes to you when you need them to!

email freshbiz@dazzlethemag.com

At his old job Arkim would observe the skills necessary to perform this delicate craft on a daily basis. While The Mobile Tech started off at home with a few screwdrivers, Arkim thought “If I could do this in such a simple way, how much more could I achieve if I push myself further.” He’s since brought on a second technician stationed at their Castries branch inside the Valmont building. Allowing him to handle repairs on the road. If you weren’t all caught up, check out The Mobile Tech in the details below! Beauty in the Blink of an Eye

I

n January 2018, the local beauty company, Blink of an Eye launched its online store for its highdemand Mink lashes. If you’ve got stubborn and wayward lashes, then these easy-to-apply lashes would be the perfect fit for you. Andrea Weesbrook, co-founder of Blink of an Eye, admitted to being just a satisfied consumer initially. She always loved lashes but applying them had always been an issue. “For me, I’ve always loved all things beauty, so there was a point where I was doing my makeup but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out how to apply my lashes. One day I got a pair of mink lashes and when I put them on I realized they were easier for me. My natural lashes are curly and, therefore, the drugstore lashes would never cut it. After that, I immediately fell in love with them,” says Andrea. Their product is quite affordable too. Quality lashes at a reasonable price? They’ve got it. They’re even introducing new applicators to make applying their lashes that much easier. Eventually, they’ll add more to their list of mink lashes but for now you can get your fair share of Passion, Toya, Belle, Sophistik, Monet, Finesse and Vixxen from Blink of An Eye. We hope they continue to gain success and wish them a prosperous journey as they embark on new endeavours. Check them out on Instagram: @blinkofaneyeslu

March 2003, just four years later, Trevor’s dream was realized, having been given the opportunity to lead a team of twelve individuals as head of the Entertainment Department of Sandals Halcyon. His transformation of the entertainment team within months of his appointment, led to requests for his team to perform at various functions. It was victory for the team that year as they got the award for Department of the Year and he received the award for Manager of the Year. In March of 2007, his journey would continue as he was given a bigger challenge as Entertainment Manager of Sandals Regency and so he continued to excel. His hard work was rewarded at the 2012 Prestige Awards as he was again named, Manager of the year. His thirst for more would now take him onto production. of being one of Saint Lucia’s best choreographers and cultural activists. His attention to detail in the art form has earned him national popularity and his expertise is constantly sought after. Trevor’s love for the arts extends to carnival, having formed an integral part of the Red Unlimited and Red Rebellion Carnival bands. Presently Trevor is a founding member and Heads the Creative Team of the FUZION MAS Carnival Band. His love for pageantry started with his participation and victory in 1993, in the Mr. Teen Saint Lucia pageant. He has been talent coordinator, chaperone and consultant to many contestants locally and regionally. In 2011, he formed part of the National Carnival Queen Show Committee in the capacity of production manager and producer, a position he held for three years. In 2015 Trevor took up a different role and made history of becoming the first male appointed to Chairperson of the National Queen Show Committee and by far produced one of the most talked about shows to date. His latest work was a full-length theatrical production commissioned by the government of Saint Lucia and the Creative Industries for the Jété Program 2015 dubbed “ONE ISLAND” to mark the celebration of Saint Lucia’s 36th Independence Anniversary. His journey and achievements reflect the possibilities available through opportunity, ambition and a commitment to be the best you can be. Trevor holds a master’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources. He now Heads the Entertainment division in the Eastern Caribbean as Regional Group Creative Manger – Entertainment for Sandals Resorts International.

Are Bluetooth Headphones Right for You?

H

eadphones, one of the devices that music lovers never leave home without. Whether it’s to listen to some soothing music on the couch or motivational tunes during a workout, many of us prefer to listen using a headset. Which brings us to Bluetooth headphones. In this article, we’re going to discuss some factors to consider when deciding whether or not to buy a set of Bluetooth headphones.

Pros Convenience The most convincing pitch for Bluetooth headsets is that they are wireless. There’s no nuisance of having to untangle wires and everything can be adjusted from the headset (power, volume, changing songs). This is especially useful when you’re working out in the gym or doing morning walks.

Versatility Another notable benefit is that Bluetooth headsets are non-exclusive so they can connect to any device as long as it has Bluetooth. With a wired headset, if the headset jack doesn’t match the port of the device, you’re out of luck. Furthermore, with phone and computer companies beginning to manufacture devices without the traditional 3.5mm headset ports, it’s only a matter of time before your regular wired headset becomes obsolete. 36 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Cons

Extra Cost

With convenience comes extra expense but the question is, how much more are you willing to pay? Bluetooth headsets generally cost anywhere between EC$50 - $120 more than their wired counterparts. Yet, despite the significantly higher cost, many still deem the audio output of wired headphones as on par or superior to that of their Bluetooth counterparts. So, is solely the convenience of Bluetooth headphones really worth the added cost?

Battery Life It’s ironic how Bluetooth headphones are all about convenience yet it has one notably inconvenient feature…batteries. Despite the improving battery life of newer models of Bluetooth headphones (e.g. the Sony WH-1000XM2 and Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2), you still have to charge them eventually. Plus there are many situations where you won’t be able to charge it if it dies e.g. on an airplane, in the car or on the beach. I don’t know about you, but if I’m listening to my favourite playlist, the last thing I’d want is to have to pause it and put my headset to charge for an hour or two. In the end, whether wired or wireless, you should choose a headset that suits your lifestyle. If you’re tired of untangling wires and convenience is your motto, a Bluetooth headset is the right way to go.
