Seasons Greetings

from the publisher

N

ot everyone has an entrepreneurial mindset, and that’s fine. I do believe that entrepreneurs think differently from others. They have that compulsion to succeed and this attitude generally gets them through. Some believe that you need a permanent job as security if you plan to start up a business. Over the past six years, I’ve never had difficulty in writing my publisher’s notes as they’re always based on a conversation that I’ve had. My most recent conversation was about entrepreneurship and the challenges of running your own business. Many people admire entrepreneurs and their willingness to take risks. Often, they readily admit that if they were to run a business, they would need to have some sort of job security. Theoretically, that would be the smart thing to do. Practically, however, this may not be the most efficient or effective way to go about it. I’ve learnt, over the years, that one must put their all into their business and constantly innovate in order to achieve their desired growth targets. As the business grows, you progress along with it. Entrepreneurs also need to create multiple revenue streams in order to survive in an ever-changing economic landscape. The good thing about entrepreneurship is that it grows on you. If you have a business idea, I would strongly advise that you jot it down on paper or your computer, and make sure you dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s. Your business plan should be concise and precise and must be used as a guide during the startup. With that said, I’d like to wish my amazing team, all our readers, fans and advertisers a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Please feel free to “Like” or leave feedback on our Facebook page or Instagram pages @dazzlethemag.

e r l a p g p A su S ugar Apple, also known as custard apple or sweetsop, is a native of the Americas and the West Indies. It plays an important role in many homes. The seeds are good for preventing head lice, and the leaves can help with fainting or dizziness. It can serve as an energy booster and is also a good source of vitamin C, which means it can play an important role in your diet. Let’s have a look. It prevents asthma. People with asthma would do well to include sugar apple in their diet because of its vitamin B6 component which helps to prevent asthma attacks. It also helps reduce inflammation in the body, including around the bronchial tubes. Good for diabetics. Sugar apple has an abundance of dietary fibre which helps to reduce the rate at which the body absorbs sugar, thereby reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Helps with digestion. In addition to its dietary fibre content, sugar apple is rich in copper and together they help to ease bowel movements and prevent constipation. Increases ‘good’ cholesterol. The dietary fibre also plays a major part in reducing LDL (low-density lipoprotein) sometimes called “bad” cholesterol. The fruit also contains niacin which, along with the dietary fibre, helps to lower bad cholesterol and raise HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol. 10 DAZZLE

Regulates blood pressure. Sugar apple is rich in potassium and magnesium which help to regulate your blood pressure. For persons suffering with high blood pressure, one sugar apple a day should keep it stable. Improves skin texture, hair health and eyesight. This may be one of the more outstanding benefits of sugar apples. They are high in vitamin A and contain a wonderful antioxidant which is responsible for keeping your hair healthy, your skin young and your eyesight sharp. They also have important moisturising and anti-aging properties. The inside of the fruit can be used as a balm on the skin to treat boils and ulcers and the outside can be used to treat gum infections and tooth decay. Helps you gain weight. Sugar apples are used by people who wish to gain weight. If you mix honey and sugar apple, and consume it regularly, this can help you to put on a few pounds and increase your intake of healthy calories. Alleviates anaemia. Sugar apples are a good source of iron and when consumed regularly, it can help to treat anaemia. Good for babies. The fruit contains folate which is good for pregnant women. Folate is one of the B-vitamins that help to prevent the development of neural tube defects. It also lowers the chances of a miscarriage.

Spice Up Your Christmas with a Holiday Planning Guide by Nadège Knight

T

he Christmas holidays give friends and families an excellent opportunity to come together to celebrate and enjoy the Yuletide season, as well as New Year’s Day.

That’s how it has normally been, right? We know it’s fast approaching but somehow the holidays always seem to creep up on us and we realize, at the last minute, that we’re not prepared and nothing’s ready. No gifts, no outfits, and nowhere to go. So for the benefit of the latecomers and for future reference, we have provided the following tips that will help to make the Christmas holidays a wonderful occasion for you and your loved ones.

Gift shopping Some people buy gifts for Christmas or New Year’s, some buy for both. What about you? Christmas comes first, so for most families exchanging presents at this 12 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

time has become a tradition. However, sometimes you’re not sure what to buy, and how much you should spend. Are you going for expensive items or do you have a price range? Once you’ve decided, you can then proceed to make a list of the persons for whom you’re purchasing gifts. This makes it easier to remember everyone.

Are you travelling

What to wear First, where do you plan on going? If you intend to stay indoors for a nice family dinner or lunch on Christmas day, then probably a nice Christmas-themed outfit would do. Families who like to dress up for Christmas usually opt for uniformed sweaters/outfits and take a lot of snapshots. If this doesn’t sound like your family, then you can stick to the colour theme to make it easier for you. Wear red, white and black. If you’re going to church or a Christmas party, consider wearing flats, covered shoulders (for church) and protective winter gear if you’re in a cold climate. For New Year’s Day, going to nightclubs and parties is the usual trend and people take lots of photos. You would do well to remember that it’s the beginning of the New Year, otherwise you’ll end up being upset because of looking your ordinary, everyday self in those photos. You want to wear something that brings out your inner wild side. If you’re going to a themed party, then the hosts would have done all the thinking for you. If it’s a nightclub/party/casino, then wear something bright and flashy. You’ll fit in just right, and you’ll thank us later.

You’ll want to decide this one in advance. Where are you heading? Who will you be staying with? How much money do you have to spend? What are you bringing along with you? You should have a checklist to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything. You can’t simply return home and collect it if you do. If you’re travelling from a cold to a hot climate or vice versa, then you’ll need the appropriate clothing. Thick coats and boots won’t make sense in most of the Caribbean, while vests and slippers will have you freezing to death in New York. As you begin packing, check things off your list so that you’ll be aware of what is missing. Plan your vacation in advance so that everything goes off without a hitch. Once you have all the right stuff - gifts, outfits, money, and an awesome holiday destination - then you’re all set to go. If you’re staying home, then so what? What better place to be than home for the holidays?

KENSON J.

CASIMIR How he Mastered the art of Turning Adversity into Triumph

T

here’s no denying it; whether you’re kneedeep in the world of local sports or you occasionally flip through TV channels or radio stations, the name, or at least the voice, of Kenson J. Casimir must have crossed your path at least once. In a recent interview with Kenson, our discussion ranged from his dominance in sports broadcasting via St. Lucia Sports Online to his active efforts toward poverty alleviation in the Gros-Islet community, to other aspects of his life that most people don’t know about. “By now, I’d say I’m best known for exploiting the sports,” said Kenson, adding, “Up to a few years ago, most people would’ve known me for representing the country in multiple sporting events, including cricket, football and track and field, most of which I started from a very early age.” Kenson actually started off by speaking about his struggles growing up in the heart of Gros-Islet. “Many people know me as a jan Gros-Islet, Ezra and myself being in close proximity. But what very few people know is that I grew up in a very poor family in a tiny home. My mom would work three jobs to provide for us and keep us on our feet. I’d consider myself the epitome of what ‘being raised by a community’ means. All of my sporting gear would come from the Gros-Islet Cricket Association. Other persons from the community would also chip in to help make my dreams come true and keep me involved in what I love, which is sports.” Sports also kept Kenson out of the trouble he’d see daily in his community, including drugs and the illegal use of weapons that characterized the dangerous lifestyle of some individuals in the community.

16 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Furthermore, as he proudly stated, he’s never been one to settle for the status quo or to do the same things repeatedly.

“My brothers and I always wanted more and dreamed of making things better for ourselves and others in the community. Now St. Lucia Sports Online is a sponsor of Monchy FC. We contribute to the players’ overall development in various ways. I’m also a community development officer. Along with the Gros-Islet Community Action Group, we’ve done a lot to help the elderly and give lessons to young people, especially those who didn’t pass their CSEC exams.” Kenson also benefited from the guidance and discipline imparted by his parents who required him to be indoors by 6:00 pm and stay off the block at all times. However, there is one place close to home that no one could keep him from. “I was pretty much born and raised by the beach. I can’t recall it myself but as I got older my family would tell me about the time when I got up and ran straight into the sea. I was just four or five years old at the time and I couldn’t swim. A man who lived in the area found me in the water, face down, totally still and not breathing. He kept rolling me over on the shore until I started coughing up water, and that’s how I survived. The following day I was back in the water, but of course, under heavy supervision.” Kenson’s academic performance at secondary school left much to be desired, unlike his participation in sports, which he’s passionate about. “At Leon Hess I chose six subjects but because of my participation in sports I barely spent time in class during my latter years at the school. Ultimately, I was absent for four exams and only got two of the six that I chose.” Thanks to former Education Minister Mario Michel who decided that he wouldn’t want to have a national athlete out there unemployed, Kenson succeeded in getting a job as a messenger at the Ministry of Education. It was a push he felt he really needed. “There was a young lady there who would constantly belittle and insult me because I underachieved academically. One time she embarrassed me in front a large group of my friends. That actually brought me to tears. But because of how it made me feel, it became my biggest motivator to do better. Shortly after that incident I went on to pass my remaining four subjects and then I moved on to SALCC and got a scholarship to complete my BA degree at Grambling State University where I finished with a 3.9 GPA. Then I did my Masters in mass communications and finished with a 4.0 GPA.

“Upon returning home I was driving through town in my new car and saw the same woman who had insulted me. I rolled down my window and the look on her face was enough for me. Now we’re really good friends. I don’t hold any grudges and I believe that’s my blessing. But it was her initial attitude towards me that pushed me to excel.” Kenson is now one year away from earning his PhD. He also recalled his initial foray into the media. “I remember sitting at home watching Brian Calixte do sports on DBS and thinking to myself ‘This man has my job and I want it.’ Shortly thereafter, Kenson’s father got him a job at MBC presenting sports and the news. “What bothered me was that I was assigned to present mostly international sports stories which were easily available online. Even when I got to do local sports, the time slot was very limited considering all the interesting sports activities that were going on. That’s sort of the genesis of the idea for St. Lucia Sports Online. But my experience gained at MBC was extremely useful.” When he moved on to HTS, Kenson faced the same issue of inadequate airtime to cover all the stories he wanted to. “I initially presented the idea [of St. Lucia Sports Online] to them as HTS Sports Online, so it would be a collaboration between them and myself. That was immediately turned down so I went to Kurt Charles and asked him to design a mockup website for me with articles as a sample. He named it St. Lucia Sports Online and set it up. It started getting traction but I will admit I’ve never ever liked the name it was given. He managed to convince me to keep it since it had already been paid for and people started taking note of it. It’s actually registered under the name 758 Sports Net, which is good because the other name, which is well known, is too often confused with another news website.” Once the site was established, he got an offer from CPL but it raised the issue of potential conflict of interest at HTS and ultimately led to Kenson moving to DBS. Nevertheless, he credits Alison Kentish and Winston Springer Jr. with helping him develop at HTS. “It was a great experience,” he added.

DAZZLE 17

Now at DBS Kenson has full control over his content and he’s even able to manage a ‘day-job’ at the Ministry of Youth Development & Sports. With so much on his plate, one has to wonder what his secret to success is. “Waking up early. I’ve been blessed with a hatred for sleep. Being able to function on four or five hours of sleep is a blessing in disguise. Even at college it’s been great for me because I’d be able to spend more time studying alongside training. Sometimes it even enabled me to finish my courses a full year earlier. Now I get up at 4:30 a.m. every day, have coffee then head down to the gym. By 7:00 am I’ve done all my writing for the day. From 7:00 am to 8:00 am I’m at Vybe Radio as a pundit. Most times the [DBS] nightly news is

completed long in advance. Once that’s done I can get to my day job.” Recalling the days when he used to train with Daren Sammy and others who have gone on to win international acclaim, Kenson admits that he misses participating in competitive sports. “Sometimes you wish ‘you could turn back time and do things differently but it is what it is,” says Kenson. The SLSO Sports Updates, a new three-minute midday segment, boasts 200,000 weekly views. “The market for that segment is great because not everyone can wait for the 7:00 p.m. news.” Kenson plans to relaunch St. Lucia Sports Online under the ‘758 Sports Net’ title and build a home studio. “I’m also not ruling out a future move to ESPN or Sportsmax if something like that were to happen. I’d still be able to manage my operations here so I believe I’d be able to do both.” Kenson attributes his current success to Ryan Casimir who captains the ship in his absence, and numerous others. “Linda Daher and Laurie Hutchinson were also a huge help to my development at DBS. Mervin Bellass who contributes from the south really plays an important role in St. Lucia Sports Online,” he added. We wish Kenson tons of success in his endeavours!

fun facts If you could be one athlete for a week who would you be? Giancarlo Stanton (baseball player for the Yankees). Who is your biggest role model? Mario Michel. What was the last dessert that you had? Vieux-Fort Veterans cheesecake. Most embarrassing moment in your career? At Blackheart we promised to stream the event live on Facebook and the rain came down and wet everything, so we had to shut down mid-game and leave. We definitely weren’t prepared! 18 DAZZLE

The Secret of Successful Marketing - Do more Showing than Telling ‘Show, don’t tell’ is one of the most important guidelines for any successful marketing strategy. This ideal has stood the test of time simply because it not only applies to business-related thought processes, but also in our daily lives.

C

onsider this hypothetical scenario; you’re seated somewhere in Rodney Bay reading the latest issue of Dazzle Magazine when a long-time friend runs up to you and tells you about a funny incident that happened earlier in the day. Your friend goes on and on telling you this funny and somewhat unbelievable story until you ask whether he/she took any photos or videos of the incident. The answer is ‘no’, at which point the story 20 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

turns out to be not as impactful as it could have been, and you’re no longer as interested because there was nothing to show in the first place. With this real-world example in mind, let’s see why ‘showing’ is important in the world of business. As a business owner/entrepreneur you must first have a detailed understanding of who your potential customers are. This knowledge will guide you as to how you choose to SHOW what your product or service is all about. You can take advantage of the various social media platforms that have emerged in recent years by using those that are more suitable for a visual-heavy marketing strategy.

Similarly, it is equally important to stand out with the style and designs you choose for your brand or business when showing. And if you’re not quite sold yet, consider the findings of a OneSpot study which show that the human brain processes images 60 times faster than words. This is certainly a useful bit of information that’s worthy of pondering over.

Take Snapchat and Instagram as examples; these two social networking apps have now overtaken more mainstream social networks like Facebook in some circles by virtue of their ecosystems being almost exclusively visual. When brainstorming, see how best you can include video and other imagery (pictures, graphics, GIFs) in your content plan. Users often scroll through social media timelines without paying close attention to everything that’s on their screen. The only way to improve your chances of reaching a wider audience and gain their genuine interest is by showing them what you have to offer.

Whether it’s for individual branding or an entire organisation, always try to leverage a sufficient amount of visual content as part of your marketing strategy in order to draw customers in and to retain existing customers. Not only does this mantra apply to your digital marketing but also in face-to-face interactions, should your product or service allow for that. If a customer walks into your store and initially shows interest in what you are offering, don’t bore them with spec-sheets and numbers that won’t be of significant value to them. Instead, carry out a demonstration, if possible, or highlight a product that shows the very best of what you have to offer and why they need to buy it. On the other hand, there is still a place for telling through text. Sometimes a combination of the two will suit you just fine. The key is finding balance between the two. www.dazzlethemag.com DAZZLE 21

Rotary Club of Gros-Islet: Changing Lives, Improving Communities

T

he Rotary Club of Gros-Islet is a dynamic and socially active organization whose members are dedicated to helping solve real-world problems in our communities and creating positive and lasting changes in people’s lives. It was chartered 25 years ago from the Rotary International Organization and is one of an international community of clubs comprising approximately 1.2 million members worldwide.

Dazzle Magazine got the opportunity to speak with well-known Rotarian, Lenny Cumberbatch, a member of the Rotary Club of Gros-Islet and the current Director of Membership Development for this Rotary calendar year, which runs from July 1, 2018 to July 1, 2019. 22 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

In recent years, the club has funded a special-needs playground for children with developmental disabilities, and also contributed to river bank stabilization in Dennery by planting trees along severely eroded river banks in the community. “The goals of Rotary International include supporting communities and societies, as well as eradicating polio from the face of the earth,” says Lenny. “Every independent club takes on a similar mandate and works toward that goal. We achieve this through assembling a group of like-minded persons from diverse backgrounds who have influence in numerous disciplines within various sectors of the society. We currently boast 50 members,” he added. Current president of the Rotary Club of Gros-Islet, Lenita Joseph says the club has no plans for slowing down. Members are presently embarking on a legacy project aimed at enhancing the local capacity and skills for manufacturing prosthetics in Saint Lucia. Considering its impressive achievements to date, it’s not difficult to see how the organization has stood the test of time.

Although based in Gros-Islet,the club’s efforts extend far and wide. Citing some of the club’s numerous projects, Lenny said, “The club has organised a Christmas hamper program for distressed communities in the south of the island, reading programs and breakfast feeding programs at primary schools. We purchased a mobile dental chair that is made available at various schools in order to provide free dental services to the students. This project is run in collaboration with the Ministry of Health which provides technical assistance and support. On a regional level, we have been active in the relief efforts in Dominica by helping to revive the fishing industry, which is a major source of income and food for Dominicans.”

“Seeing how one program can have such a huge impact on the lives of people in a community gives you motivation to keep it going. It’s all meant to make your country a better place and being a Rotarian means you are committed to that cause,” says Lenny Cumberbatch. As the Rotary Club of Gros-Islet continues its mission of establishing life-changing projects in communities around Saint Lucia, you too can join the organization and be an inspiration to others. Tamica

Belony at The Doll House an Unforgettable Beauty Experience

T

amica Belony is the face behind The Doll House. She describes herself as a fun-filled person who is highly motivated and strives for what she wants. She’s also a passionate woman, and is focused on doing what she loves. A graduate of the Corinth Secondary School, Tamica is a certified cosmetologist and has started her own business. Many people know her as the founder of The Doll House, a beauty spa in Castries that is basically a hybrid business. Dazzle had the pleasure of interviewing her about her business venture and the services that The Doll House offers. Dazzle: How long has the Doll House been established? Tamica: The Doll House has been opened for two years. One year as an online store and the other as an in-store business. Before opening the physical store I used to work online only with deliveries and drop offs. Now that we have a physical store, we include instore service as well. The store is located upstairs Blue Coral Mall in Castries, Unit 109. I kind of miss the online store. Now it’s only for people to see what we have available but since we’re established at a physical location, it’s different. We don’t really do deliveries anymore. The online store was a bit easier, you know? I have help with my husband, Stephen Belony. He has a barbershop next door so we share the space.

24 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Dazzle: At what point did you realize that having a career in beauty was what you wanted? Tamica: I can’t give a specific date, it just kind of happened. I would put on lipstick and people would inquire about where I’d gotten it, and I would refer them to other stores. Then I’d ask myself, “Why are you sending them to other places when you could have your own?” So I started buying and selling makeup online just for fun. For me, it wasn’t a business. It became a passion after a while. Whatever you do should be something that you’re passionate about. It’s a skill that I’ve learned, because I’m a certified cosmetologist. The only thing that I don’t do is hair care. But I’m currently learning how to become a certified nail tech. I do makeup, eyebrow tinting, eyelash extensions, pedicures, manicures, ear piercings and facial waxing.

able to achieve a few things on my list. I was a flight attendant for a short while. I have my own store and my own spa. Dazzle: What sets you apart from your competitors? Tamica: That’s a good question. I guess, being myself. You’ve got to have confidence and a lot of people don’t. They start a business and end up abandoning it when things get hard. They don’t stick around for the challenges. As soon as they see a slow day, they close down. They don’t think of solutions to their problems. That’s what sets me apart. I always think of something new. Everything I do is fresh.

fun facts

Dazzle: Apart from what you’ve already mentioned, what else can people expect from your brand? Tamica: When you come in, we want you to say to yourself, “I have to come back!” We want you to be relaxed and comfortable. We don’t only offer services for the ladies, the men are included as well. That’s what makes us different. It’s called the Future Star Barbershop, which I co-own. We do both women and men’s hair. We don’t only offer a service, we sell products as well.

If you had to change your career path, what would you do? Maybe modeling.

I’ve gotten positive feedback for sure, but I’ve also had to deal with the negative comments as well. Some young people try to break me down and criticize the way I do my work. Initially, it bothered me, but you can’t let little things like that get to you. If you can’t take constructive criticism then you can’t do business. You have to be strong and self-confident, and just move on.

What’s your number one vacation spot? Thailand. I haven’t been but I want to go to see elephants.

Dazzle: What level of progress would you say you and your business have achieved thus far? Tamica: Just the other day I was like, “How was I able to do all that in such a short space of time?” because it went from an online store to a full-blown business at the Blue Coral quickly. I’m always so amazed and thankful for how much the business has grown. At school, I always wanted to own a spa. I never thought I’d actually have one but this became much more than that. It became a movement. Dazzle: What were your original aspirations aside from owning a spa? Tamica: I wanted to be a model, actually. I wanted to travel the world and be a Victoria Secret model. Wild dreams, right? But I always had a list of things I wanted to be. I had so many things written down — police officer, teacher and flight attendant. I was

One word to describe your personality? Straightforward. If you could travel to any time period in history, when would it be and why? Back to the 90’s because then I had no responsibilities.

Dazzle: What are some of the challenges that you’ve faced in your line of work? Tamica: To be honest, I don’t have that many challenges in what I do. I don’t get any bad customers at all. The only real challenge I’d say is probably the slow days. You know when business isn’t what it’s supposed to be? I don’t get people complaining about my work. Very few people will see what I do—that’s those who aren’t customers—and leave a negative comment, but that’s about it. Our slow days are definitely outside the carnival season. We do better during the carnival season. We go all out. We sell stockings gems, we do hair, nails and makeup, so it’s our busiest season alongside Christmas. Outside of these two seasons, everything else is just regular. Dazzle: Who or what inspires you to get up every day and do what you do? Tamica: My son is number one. I have to leave something for him for when I’m no longer here. That’s

my main goal, making sure he’s secured. There’s no stopping until I can’t work anymore. He’s my main inspiration and before he was there, it was myself. I wanted to prove to everyone who said I wouldn’t be able to do it, wrong. Dazzle: Where do you see your brand in the future? Tamica: I don’t want to spill the beans yet. However, we have plans to work with different people. It has moved up so much. The Doll House started selling hair pills—pills to make your hair grow—then it transformed from that to selling makeup, and from that to doing makeup, and then it just continued to grow. It has changed so much within a short space of time. In the future we have plans to grow the business but we’re taking it one step at a time. Dazzle: What advice would you give to someone who is at the same stage you were when you had just started your business? Tamica: Don’t listen to people. Just do what you feel you need to do or to improve yourself. I started doing nails in 2011 and then I gave up on it because people were saying things I didn’t like. However, I’m going back to Barbados to be certified. If you want to succeed as an entrepreneur, don’t stop to listen to pessimistic people. We wish Tamica great success with her business, now and in the future. RECAP

The Outlander Series: a Unique, Genre-bending Drama By Nadège Knight

What if your future was the past?

A

t first, I was skeptical because historical period dramas tend to get too deep into the blood and gore, but book adaptations have always been a weakness of mine.

Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling Outlander novels have been the rave ever since she published the first one more than twenty years ago. I generally knew what the series was about—a former World War II nurse being mysteriously transported back to 1745 Scotland while on her honeymoon there, in 1943. It was only after I watched the first episode that I decided to see how the screen adaptation was portrayed in the book. It was a unique concept and a slightly scary one. Claire Randall, a highly skilled nurse from 20th century England, travels to Scotland with her new husband, Frank Randall. It was there that she visited the standing stone circle called Craigh Na Dun, that transported her to 18th century Scotland. There she meets the Redcoats, more importantly Johnathan ‘Black Jack’ Randall, an ancestor to Claire’s 20th century 28 DAZZLE

husband, Frank, and Jamie Fraser, a Scottish soldier and Jacobite rebel who she marries first, then falls in love with. As she struggles to balance her 18th century and 20th century lives, including being a woman in a time when women were regarded differently, she must decide where to keep her heart—with the gentle husband she left behind or the defiant new one she falls in love with. Everything is spot on with the books, even one of the more controversial plotlines—rape. When Black Jack, the ruthless Redcoat who makes Jamie and Claire’s lives literal hell, takes a disturbing interest in Jamie and he acts upon it in one of the more spine-chilling scenes in the series. It’s hard to read, and even harder to watch as Balfe, Heughan and Menzies give us a performance worthy of an award. Outlander, not without holes in its plotlines, is a show worth spending time watching. It’s interesting to see how well these diverse actors work within the contrasting timelines of the two centuries, and if you’re not paying attention you’ll miss a whole lot.

How to Get the Most out of Your Weekends

M

ost of us have been there a few times; the week is jam-packed with assignments and massive special projects that simply couldn’t be completed during working hours, regardless of whether it is a 40-hour work week or more. Maybe your passion for your job knows no such boundary as a nine-to-five, 40 hour work week. In any case, it’s never wise to use weekends as extra work days for too long. Besides, you’d want to avoid burning yourself out by the time the new week rolls around so that you can be fully functional Monday through Friday. Check out the tips on how to make your weekends more successful. 30 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Keep your alarms turned on While it may seem tempting to sleep in on weekends, it can actually have adverse effects on your overall productivity by affecting your sleeping patterns. It’s

actually a lot easier for your body to adjust to a fixed schedule as far as waking up and falling asleep goes. Furthermore, getting a head start on your day will be super helpful if you’ve got a lot planned for the day, whether it’s work-related or recreational. At some point you may not even need an alarm because your body will become so used to waking up and falling asleep at its scheduled time.

Meant for adventures Soak up some natural sunlight and stretch your legs every chance you get. Picking up an outdoor hobby is a great way to build on your health and personal development. Furthermore, putting effort into something rewarding but different from your regular obligations can help you balance out your time and feel accomplished. You can even switch your adventure every weekend instead of sticking to one hobby; maybe a hike, a day at the beach or even cycling. Get out there and do something memorable that you can smile about all week!

Plan ahead and catch up on some rest Spend Quality time with loved ones. If you work the typical day job hours, chances are you spend more time around your coworkers and in front of your computer than you do with the people you love (family and friends). Make sure to prioritise some good ol’ family time on the weekends to ensure that you all have healthy relationships with one another. Knowing that you have the support of your friends and family can truly contribute to you performing better while on the job.

You will always be better off planning your week ahead of time as opposed to scrambling to figure everything out when you’re seated at your desk. This isn’t a cue to spend half of your weekend doing work in advance, but approximately an hour of planning ahead can get you started on a good foot. Once that is done, you can wind down and do something relaxing before going to bed. The best part about having a successful weekend is making sure that you’re ready to make the most of the week ahead!

Ezra ‘D’Funmachine’ Augustin Scaling the Heights of Soca Stardom

Y

ou don’t need to be an avid fan of soca music in order to be familiar with Ezra ‘D’Funmachine’ Augustin.

With his exuberant personality and ability to captivate an audience, Ezra has gone from simply being one of Gros-Islet’s regular residents to becoming one of Saint Lucian’s most notable soca artistes. Born and raised in Gros-Islet, he attended Saint Mary’s College and the Division of Arts, Science and General Studies at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. As expected, he was not reticent about sharing his experiences as a soca star.

“Red Unlimited, my carnival band was celebrating their tenth anniversary and as one of the more hype-section leaders, we wanted to do something to commemorate the occasion,” said Ezra. “Thygeson Penn, a producer and director at Studio 758, had this idea to do a song. We wanted to do something to portray what Red is all about and make sure it was ideal for the road. We were also known for being ‘stoosh’ which, of course, is not true, so that’s where the “No Stoosh” thing came about. When everything came together, ‘Bacchanal Rampage’ was born. “It was my first time ever in a studio. We wrote and recorded the song the same day, with the help of Orlando ‘HyperD’ Phillip and Elnathan ‘Wiggles’ Cyrille. The song surpassed my expectations and before I knew it, I was performing at my first event 32 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

in 2014. For Soca Monarch preliminaries, there was a bit of a controversy regarding the registration. The rules were strict back then but Thadeus Antoine stuck with me and I went all the way to the finals and won.” Although he was delighted with his successful start, Ezra was not content to become a one-off phenomenon. He wanted to prove that he had staying power and was ready to take on the challenge. “I believe that after winning Soca Monarch I had somewhat of a responsibility to deliver... to show people that it wasn’t a fluke and that I could still produce good music but not necessarily to win right away. That was basically what propelled me to continue on in the soca industry.” Ezra went on to describe what it was like after his first win and how he set about laying the groundwork for a successful career in soca. “The first key thing for me was feedback. Taking real feedback from experienced producers and the fans — everybody. Wherever I could get constructive criticism and feedback, I took it and it helped me develop in my craft. My main producer, Thygeson Penn, was my inspiration. I’ve also worked with other producers and that’s helped me greatly. I listen to other genres of music; dancehall and reggae, and from time to time I get inspiration from that as well. The people of Saint Lucia are also a major inspiration for me. If I put something out there and it doesn’t connect with them, then I’m quick to go back to the drawing board and see what they move towards and how it fits in with my identity. If there’s one thing I believe in, it’s identity... but they play a big role in my development even now.” As with most career paths, that of a soca artiste doesn’t come without its trials and tribulations, and Ezra has faced quite a few. “I’d say distribution. In terms of the song expanding, getting out of Saint Lucia, that was a problem. You need good connections, and with a huge event like Caribana, where you’ll find people from all over, distribution is important. If they’re listening to Bacchanal Rampage, you won’t know. Some people in Canada listen to it because there’s a Saint Lucian network there but what about the others? What about the Trinis, Bajans and Jamaicans? They don’t know about it and the main reason is distribution.” Generally, problems can be solved, and for Ezra social media has proven to be one of his solutions. “In terms of overcoming that problem, there’s YouTube, other

When speaking about the people that inspire him, Ezra said, “I’ve been passionate about music for quite some time and there are many persons whom I can identify with. Performance wise, Bounty Killer; his energy, his drive, his passion when he’s on stage. In terms of lyrical content and consistency, I’d say Vybz Kartel. I’ll also mention Yardie, who I’m a big fan of — his personality, creativity and the manner in which he puts his lyrics, the play on words and so on.” Inspiration for his music comes from quite a few people, but Ezra narrows it down to those who have helped him directly with the development of his craft. “Superman HD helped me with understanding the industry and he was there for me at my first performance. I’d also say Penn because he’s a producer/artiste who’s helped me in various ways. He told me that no matter what happens on that stage, I had to stay focused and be confident, and people will accept you.” Recalling, his first moment on stage at Cooler Fete 2014, Ezra said, “We had to do a sound check before the event and people were a little surprised at how well I did after the fact. The night of Cooler Fete was more nerve-wracking because now you have a packed crowd to perform for.”

fun facts Your favourite song and artiste? Wyclef Jean and Sweetest Girl by the same artiste. What new country would you like to visit one day? France. Books or television? Television, definitely. Who’s your favourite athlete? Thierry Henry. social media and regional/international DJs as well. But I’ve also faced challenges with my performances as well. It’s one thing to record a song and have it sound good, but delivery is a totally different thing. And like I’ve said before, I’ve grown a lot through feedback and crowd participation. I’m the kind of person that if I don’t see a reaction to my music when I get off stage, I’m not satisfied, and I have to ask myself questions: Why? Is it my energy level? The music? And then build off of that.” 34 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

Over the years, Ezra has matured a great deal in terms of his personality and his musical ability. While he’s never been a shy person and has always been one for bacchanal, experience and the responsibilities that come with being a celebrated Soca artiste have made him more focused and circumspect as a performer. “As an individual I’ve matured over the years. In terms of my presence and how Saint Lucians see me, I’m considered to be one of the more well-known artistes on the island. So that’s a sign of development. My level of social responsibility has also grown. People, the youth in particular, look up to me so I have to be more careful in the way I do things compared to when I first started.” Ezra’s dynamic personality and artistic skills, coupled with his engaging social media presence have won him endorsements from Climax and the Saint Lucia National Lottery. Digicel and Chairman’s Reserve are also partnering with him for future engagements. Meanwhile, Ezra remains focused on developing his craft and enhancing his musical talent even further, including his current song X (Wine On Another Man) which happens to be one of his biggest songs to date. For all his achievements thus far, he gives thanks to God and his family and friends, and hopes to continue being an example to others. We wish him all the best.

Consuelo Florent

B

Adding Royal Flair to the Realm of Sofyerie

orn in Malaysia, Consuelo Dupal Florent has achieved a lot during her short lifetime growing up in Saint Lucia.

A graduate of Saint Joseph’s Convent, Consuelo developed a keen interest in pageantry. In 2009 she took part in the Miss Haynes Smith Caribbean Talented Teen pageant and won. A few years later she went on to compete in numerous other pageants and did remarkably well by winning in most of them and placing among the top finalists in the others. In one of the pageants she captured the ‘Best Dressed’ award. She designed all her outfits, a feat of which she is quite proud. Dazzle Magazine had the pleasure of sitting with Consuelo for an interview, during which she shared her life story and the triumphs and challenges she has experienced over the years. Dazzle: What made you get into pageantry? Consuelo: My mother has been a pageant coach since the 80’s, so it’s basically what I grew up with. Ironically, she never wanted me involved because she never liked the idea of children’s pageantry. Then Iva Satney approached me in 2009 and asked me if I would be interested in representing Saint Lucia at Miss Haynes Smith Caribbean Talented Teen. Iva told me the girls were really good but she was confident in me. When I’d gotten through and done the show I came out on top. My mom was kind of unsure about it but being the supportive mom that she is, she was there right through. I remember I got injured two weeks before the competition and I couldn’t dance like I’d planned. Barry George was in charge then and he’d proposed doing drama. I thought that was what girls did when they didn’t have talent so I was against it, but he worked with me and I won best talent that year. I fell in love with theatre then. Dazzle: What is Sofyerie all about? Consuelo: Sofyerie is a promotional marketing agency. We provide push staff for different types of events. We do anything from product sampling to corporate launches and everything in between. We’ve recently been getting into dance as well, so there are a lot of different phases of Sofyerie but basically what we do is provide staff for different events.

Dazzle: So how and why did Sofyerie start? Consuelo: In 2010 I was already doing promotions with another agency. We were representing Windward and Leeward Brewery at the time, and then my boyfriend, now husband, got a job at Brydens. He was the brand manager for Carib beer so I figured I couldn’t be representing another brand, as support. I’d proposed the idea of being a ‘Carib girl’ and he thought it would be better if I got other girls to do that. I found out who among my friends was interested. I was the only person with the means of transportation for promotions and they depended on me. Then other brand managers started calling for girls to do events. Then he told me I should start taking it seriously because people were already calling. We had no name for the business, but the idea for ‘Sofyerie’ came when we were at a small event down the coast. We were dressed nicely and this guy said we were looking ‘so fiery.’ After we’d laughed it off I realized it was a good name and decided to put my own twist to it.

fun facts If you could be an animal, which one would you be? A giraffe. What’s your favourite song? I’d have to say everything off the new popcaan album (Forever). If you had to choose between invisibility and teleportation, which would you choose and why? I think teleportation. Going from one place to another in a split second sounds cool. What was your favourite childhood show? Captain Planet. “Our slogan is “It’s not just a job, it’s a lifestyle.” That’s what I promote when it comes to Sofyerie. We teach the ladies aspects of life. You don’t just come to the promotion, talk to people, look pretty and go. We have workshops where we teach them something different— makeup skills, how to walk in heels, speech communication and sales tactics. When you www.dazzlethemag.com DAZZLE 41

hire Sofyerie you’re not hiring a ‘promo girl.’ There’s a stigma attached to the term so I don’t call my ladies that. You’re getting a brand ambassador. Dazzle: At what level do you see yourself now in terms of your career, and where do you want to be in the near future? Consuelo: Well, career wise, apart from Sofyerie I have a Bachelor’s degree in hospitality management and I am a certified wedding consultant and event planner. I do have a day job outside of Sofyerie. Currently I am a marketing executive at Body Holiday but as of November 2018, I’ve moved into a new position — Special Experiences Leader at Body Holiday, which

basically deals with event management, weddings and consultancy at the resort. I would love to eventually have Sofyerie as my main job but I think Saint Lucia has to really develop an appreciation for what we offer, but we’re getting there. I think for all the years that I’ve had Sofyerie, 2018 has been our best year yet and I hope it continues that way. I do have some very big plans to grow the business, so that’s what we’ll be doing in 2019. Dazzle: How does one qualify to become a part of your team and what do you look for in team members? Consuelo: My ladies sometime say I look for potential. I don’t look for what you are right now but rather, what you’re going to be later. A lot of the ladies who have come through our doors started out not being able to do makeup, and not having a sense of style. If you see them now you would never believe that this is the same person that you saw before. I do look for personality but there are ladies who’ve joined who were total introverts and then transform. Dazzle: How has business been for you so far and what challenges have you faced? Consuelo: Major challenges would be persons not paying the price that you want them to pay. I think for so long, ladies in Saint Lucia don’t know how to market themselves, so they often sell themselves short. Most times when you call for your price, the answer that you get is, “Oh I can get ladies to do that for less.” I saw the level of work that we had to do. We had to look just right and no one expected anything less, so why not pay us what we’re asking? It took me a while to realize and I decided it was okay to turn down certain promotions. We had major success in acquiring certain brands like Windward & Leeward Brewery Limited and Peter & Company Distribution. We also started work with regional companies as well. We worked with the Barbados Tourism Authority, and with brands out of Trinidad also. Dazzle: Who or what has been your biggest inspiration in life? Consuelo: I would definitely have to say my parents. I’ve never seen them have any downtime at all, they’ve always worked hard. I grew up really fortunate. However, my dad made it known that I had everything I needed but I wouldn’t be getting everything that I wanted. I learned early that I had to work hard for the things I wanted. It wasn’t going to be handed to me. At first I didn’t understand but it’s inspired me to work hard.

Why the iPhone XR is Worth Considering

46 DAZZLE

www.dazzlethemag.com

W

ith Apple’s latest smartphones -the iPhone XS and XS Max- snatching the headlines, there’s a third iPhone in Apple’s lineup for 2019 that may have flown under your radar. Considering the specs and details of the XR, we can safely say that this is an upgrade meant for those who own any iPhone released before the X and are looking for a decent enough upgrade. As far as similarities to the new XS, the XR features some of the same specs, including the new A12 Bionic chip, an improved 12MP camera on the back that records 4K up to 60fps, plus other cool features like Face ID to unlock. What the XR doesn’t share with the flagship models is the display resolution. Where that is concerned, the XR features a 6.1 inch 1792x828 LCD display (as opposed to the OLED displays on pricier models). What other users familiar with the iPhone since 2007 won’t be privy to is the front home button which also doubles as a fingerprint reader. With the absence of this design on Apple’s most high-end phone, and now on their most affordable smartphone, we can all but confirm that the new, almost bezel-less display with a notch, is the way forward for Apple.

Speaking of bezels, those on the XR are just slightly thicker than the XS and are only noticeable when compared side by side. But for those coming from an 8+ or anything prior to that, this will amount to a huge step forward in terms of having a higher screento-body ratio. What the XR lacks with its new display is 3D Touch. For those who were avid users of this feature, there is an alternative. In some areas, like the control centre, there is a long press option which functions similarly. The unique advantage that potential XR buyers would have are the six new colour options available, including Coral, Yellow, Product RED and blue, alongside the expected white and black. Think iPhone 5C when imagining the colours available. With the iPhone XR starting at US$749 for the base model 64GB version, it does establish itself as Apple’s latest, most affordable smartphone with not much sacrificed when compared to the more expensive XS. When browsing for a new phone to replace your old faithful, the iPhone XR is worth checking out.
