Welcome to Dazzle Magazine Thank you for picking up the fourth issue of Dazzle Magazine. I must say that every single time an issue is published, it always feels like my very first. The entire process of producing Dazzle can be so overwhelming that anxiety as well as excitement, both consume me! In this issue, we further emphasise the musical and creative side of things to complement our island’s spotlight of the newly revamped Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival. As we continue our inspirational journey, Dazzle continues to uncover fresh talent island wide along with those who are spreading their island roots into our global community. Gracing our cover is Saint Lucian rapper, Mr. Filbert ‘Kayo’ Salton. We bring his musical journey to our readers – his origins, education, career and of course, his hustle and flow! Keeping with the musical theme, Mr. Johann ‘Yogi’ Deterville explained to Dazzle Magazine how much music is a part of his DNA. Also inside, the profiles of two ambitious women are highlighted. When you carry a bag by ‘même bête…’ you carry a piece of history, founder, Mrs. Taribba Joan do Nascimento shared and Ms. Iva Latoya Lewis ecstatically spoke about her three-year-old makeup business, ‘Glamour Art by Toya’. Dazzle Magazine is also proud to showcase Mr. Junior Ricardo Joseph who is extremely passionate about his construction company, ‘Beyond Limits Design Construction’ and how he goes beyond the limit to satisfy his customers. How We Can Help Your Business
T
he Saint Lucia Youth Business Trust (SLYBT) continues to move forward in creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs (18-35 years) to realise their dreams of business ownership. The programme has gained support from partnerships both in voluntary and business sector capacities which include: First Caribbean International Bank (FCIB) Foundation, Caribbean Development Bank, CGYBT, Construction and Industrial Equipment Ltd (CIE), Accela Marketing, Bank of Nova Scotia, St. Lucia Distillers Ltd, Bay Gardens Hotel, OGM Communications Ltd, Bank of Saint Lucia (BOSL), Calabash TV, Landmark Events; all of these are strategic in representing the wide range of industries present in Saint Lucia.
with these individuals at various levels of the application process. Their concepts and ideas all vary in industry and capital requirements, reflecting the vast creative pool available within our society’s youth. SLYBT applauds these prospects as they move closer to the creation of their business.
SLYBT has corresponded with several prospects via the Trust’s website (www.slybt.org), has a presence through its social network, Facebook, with an estimated weekly reach of 20 individuals through various outreach programmes.
SLYBT would like to thank Dazzle Magazine for its co-operation and support and to commend the Magazine for its vision in creating a forum to reach young professionals, entrepreneurs and our local business community. We would also like to take this moment to appeal to the youth to, “pursue your dreams until you reach them”.
For this year, 2013, SLYBT has continued to attract new prospects to its initiative, and has interacted 8

The plan for 2013 is to repeat the programme, providing opportunities for youth to understand and create their own business proposals and ultimately, their own businesses.

Smile A Healthy Smile is a Healthy You!!!

he benefits of good oral health extend beyond a brilliant smile. Maintaining healthy oral hygiene is an important part of living an overall healthy lifestyle. Research shows that the oral cavity can be a gateway to several diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and low birth weight. Frequently, these diseases will manifest orally, prior to systemic detection. This occurs because bacterial infections within the oral cavity can spread through the bloodstream and colonise remote organ walls. Additionally, toxins from this bacteremia (the presence of bacteria in the blood, which is always abnormal) can cause severe infections in people with immunological and nutritional deficiencies. Regular dental visits are therefore critical in maintaining the wellbeing of your entire oral cavity (made up of the teeth, gums and tongue) and to prevent potentially life-threatening diseases. Lack of proper oral hygiene can lead to a number of problems such as:
Don’t wait until you are experiencing pain to visit the dentist; instead, have regular dental checkups. This will lead to a lifetime of great oral health. Good oral hygiene, however, starts at home. You can achieve this by taking a few simple steps: • Brush your teeth twice a day, for two to three minutes, with a fluoride toothpaste. • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or other inter-dental cleaners. • Change your toothbrush every three to four months. • Eat well-balanced meals as part of your diet. • Limit the between-meal and sugary snacks. • Avoid cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. • Schedule regular check-ups with your dentist. Remember, maintaining good oral hygiene habits ensure a beautiful smile and a healthy you!
• Oral and facial pain – cavities (tooth decay), periodontal (gum) disease and oral cancer • Digestive problems • Problems involving the heart and other major organs

Manage Your Finances‌Properly
E
verything in life comes with a price. Not everybody is fortunate to have money to spend lavishly on needs as well as wants. Managing your finances is essential for survival in today’s rough economic times, particularly that of Saint Lucia. The introduction of VAT in October 2012 caused many residents to rethink the way they spend. Inflation is extreme and many persons (as small as their salaries might be) saw the value of the dollar decrease. With the probability of an increase in salaries less than imminent, you have to re-strategise on what and how money is spent. This article seeks to give some ideas on how to manage your finances properly. You should create a basic budget using a sheet of paper showing after tax and NIC deductions monthly. This budget should have a breakdown of expenses for the month. These expenses should be broken down into categories, namely: rent/mortgage, bills, insurance, food, transportation, savings and entertainment. In doing so, you will have a clear indication as to how your monthly income will be spent. When you get a salary, the first thing you should do is set aside monies for rent and bills. For mortgages, many banks now make it mandatory to have a salary assignment attached to that loan; so when the salary is deposited to your account, the loan is automatically paid. If your bank does not offer this service, set up a
12
DAZZLE
www.dazzlethemag.com
standing order so that you can have these monies transferred to your loan account when your salary comes in. This is a good step in ensuring that you pay your loan on time, thus avoiding late fees and interest charges. Secondly, pay your rent on time and in full. In order to decrease the amount of rent that you pay, find a friend or a roommate to rent with you. If you are married and have a family, it is best that you and your spouse budget your mortgage or rent accordingly so that you both know what percentage of the total payment you will be making. As it relates to bills, try to find the best package from your service providers, particularly for telecommunication services: telephone, mobile, internet and cable. Many of the providers on island provide packages that will allow you to save money instead of paying for each service separately. Take advantage of unlimited fixed line calls packages. When it comes to your water bill, try not to leave the taps running. The longer your tap stays running the higher your bill will be. Last but not least for bills is electricity. Install energy saving bulbs at home. Do not leave energy pulling appliances on for long periods of time. A typical example is the iron. It is best to iron once a week rather than daily. If you are renting an apartment with a roommate, share the responsibilities equally. Sum up the total of the rent and bills monthly and divide it amongst yourselves. You will be amazed how much easier and fair this is.
On the topic of insurance and savings, try your best to save a percentage of your salary every month. This is to ensure that you have monies set aside for unforeseeable future events. Don’t just allow your money to sit in a bank collecting interest. There are quite a few international financial institutions on island where you can invest in bonds and other financial instruments. If you just want to save, find out information from all our banks and choose a savings plan that gives you the best value for your money. It is also wise to set up your own business or use your talents to make some extra cash. Medical insurance is also a nice way to manage your finances. How? Medical insurance allows you to make a monthly payment so that if you or the kids fall sick, you can get some of that money back. How cool is that! Life insurance is also a good investment. Many agencies offer life insurance with a savings plan. You can therefore get a large lump sum on retirement or annuities. It can also be an investment for your family so that when you are deceased they can have some form of finance to fall back on.
As it relates to transportation, it is wise to budget your monthly transport allowance ahead of time. Know how much you will need monthly and have a small purse or case to house those funds. Set aside this money into coins and everyday take exactly what you need. If you have a vehicle, let’s hope you would have been financially savvy and bought one that is fuel-efficient. Try to get a full tank monthly. If there are a number of you in a neighbourhood with vehicles, carpooling is the way to go. Let’s talk food. We all love to eat. Many persons have the habit of buying breakfast and lunch daily. You are setting yourself up to be broke by doing so. Set aside how much money you will need for groceries on a monthly basis. Many persons like to shop weekly. This is okay as fresh produce has a short life span and needs
to be replenished occasionally. Buy in bulk. Always be on the lookout for sales and specials from companies around the island. Cook as many meals as possible at home. It is healthier and you save much more than buying prepared food everyday. Another useful tip is to weigh the options at the supermarket. If there is a can of tuna fish for example for EC$2.00 with a net of 4oz and a can for EC$3.00 with 7oz, take the EC$3.00 can. This is almost double the amount of tuna for just 50% more! If you decide to buy two EC$3.00 cans (EC$6.00) you will have 14 oz of tuna whereas if you decide to buy three EC$2.00 cans you will only have 12oz of tuna. All work and no play make Jack and Jane dull boys and girls. One should always set aside a sum of money for entertainment, monthly. After all, you must live life and make yourself happy at all times. You can include clothes in your budget but avoid buying clothes too frequently. This can and will prove to be a ‘wallet killer’. Take advantage of sales when they arise and try your best not to go overboard. Ensure however, that it does not take priority over your rent, bills and food. You can include it as part of your entertainment budget. Let’s not forget those with kids. Every summer parents are faced with the difficulty of coming up with the finances to support the cost of books, uniforms, shoes etc. To alleviate this lump sum cost before the school year, every month during the year set aside a small sum of money in a bank account especially for the kids. Some local banks on island provide savings plans that pay interest monthly. Take advantage of this and you will be amazed that by the time summer comes you will have just enough to cover the expenses. In conclusion, managing your finances does not have to be overwhelming. Plan ahead and save for unforeseen circumstances. Keep your eyes and ears open for sales and specials and ensure that you give everything priority. Spend and use your money wisely on things that you need and not what you want. Don’t let your wants take priority over your needs. You will be surprised how less of a headache you will have if you follow these helpful hints.

fter two weeks of unanswered emails, text messages and phone calls, finally Dazzle is speaking to Saint Lucian rapper Kayo, via Skype. He’s based in Halifax, Nova Scotia and the 24 year-old has recently become the first Lucian rapper to sign a deal with a major recording label (EMI, recently acquired by Universal). He’s a busy guy! He shows up on camera with a friendly smile, but worry lines etch his forehead. He apologises for being late and for taking so long to confirm our interview request. He says it’s been a, “crazy week”. Getting signed to a big label isn’t all he thought it would be but first, we’re interested in how he got there. Tell me about growing up in St. Lucia. I grew up in Ciceron. The street I grew up on was interesting because as soon as you drive in there are the lawyers, doctors and other high class people; a little further down there are the middle class people, where we were; and then further down was like a total ghetto. That was good for me because I got the opportunity to interact with people from different walks of life. Can you tell us more about your family? My parents (Gilbert and Venetia Salton) were always very God fearing people. They were extremely protective of me. I have two twin sisters and two brothers who are all significantly older than me. I am the last. So I guess I was the baby and that’s why my parents were so protective. Growing up that way probably caused me to be a little rebellious, while I was growing up. I went to St. Mary’s College and I used to get into a lot of fights over stupid stuff. The first one was because someone stole my chair. I also got picked on a lot because of my name. My real name is Filbert Salton. So they used to call me, “fill my butt with salt on it”. Yeah, I got into a lot of fights over that. How did you find your way through High School? You know what, I was never great at sports or anything like that. I did some stuff with the Debate Team, but I found my own niche in music and everyone started knowing me for that. In Form 3, I started recording with a friend named, Corey Raggie. I started sending people my songs over msn and then at school we would have freestyle battles in the lunch room. The ‘SMC Talent Festival’ was the first time I performed publicly. I was part of the school choir and when we did a rendition of ‘The World’s Greatest’ by R. Kelly I did a rap verse on the song. The crowd was pretty receptive.
You released your first single in Saint Lucia and it was at the ‘Saint Lucia Jazz Festival’ that you got the chance to perform for a big crowd for the first time. Tell Dazzle about that time. It was in 2007, just before I came up to Canada. My barber, Snapper, got me in touch with local Jazz group Sisterhood. They were looking for a rapper and I flew to Trinidad and recorded a song with them. ‘Dear Music’ was my first radio single. It really jump started everything. That’s when people really started taking me seriously. In Saint Lucia it’s difficult for people to take you seriously as a rapper because it’s not a typical Caribbean genre. So they feel you’re faking it. It’s not real to them. I get it...but I don’t agree with it. How did you end up going to school at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax? I had originally wanted to go to school in Orlando, Florida to pursue music business. I got accepted but my loan was not being approved because music business was not on the government’s priority list. Recruiter Dr. Harvey Miller told me about Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. I applied with no intention of actually going here but I got accepted. So I ended up enrolling for a degree in marketing, which has turned out great. When you arrived in Canada in 2008 you had a double task at hand; excel at your academics and find a way to make a name for yourself as a non-Canadian rapper in Canada. You quickly realised, however, that being from Saint Lucia would become a huge advantage. Tell us about this experience. There are so many people up here trying to get into the industry and being from Saint Lucia helped me to stand out. It was an added value, so I never saw it as a disadvantage, that’s why I will always rep Lucia in my music and anywhere else. I need that support, I need to know people at home are rooting for me you know; it keeps me going.” How did you juggle school and your music career at the same time? A lot of sacrifices. During summer, instead of going home, I would stay in Canada and take courses so I would have more time for music during the school year. The support my professors gave me was really key. When I was on tour with Hedley, I had a final exam to take and they let me keep up with my work. While I was on the road, I had to find someone to invigilate my exam and the publicist ended up doing
fun facts Favourite Jordan Sneaker: Bugs Bunny 8’s. I got those during the first tour I ever went on. I randomly found them in a store and that started the obsession all over again. Favourite chick flick: Love Don’t Cost a Thing. I know it’s a terrible movie but Christina Milian does it for me. M&Ms or Skittles? Definitely Skittles Memorable ‘Asou Square’ moment: Not getting on the Ferris wheel because I was too scared. I was 12 years old. All my friends laughed at me but I tried to play it off like, “yeh I’m gonna walk around and look for girls”. Favourite Rapper? Kendrick Lamar is my favourite rapper right now…he can rap his ass off. I dig the technicality behind what he does. The way he structures his songs is really dope. Least Favourite Rapper: French Montana. I just don’t get him. One, there’s no substance. Two, I hate his voice. And three, he just looks weird. it. I wrote the exam in the back room of a stadium while the sound check was happening on stage! When did you get your first big break in Canada? In 2009 Canadian rapper Classified put out a contest on Facebook; looking for one up-and-coming rapper that he would work with.[Classified is a 20-year veteran on the Canadian rap scene, a well respected, award winning artist. His current radio hit is ‘Inner Ninja]. So I entered the contest and I won. We ended 18

up doing an entire album together and he became my mentor and a really good friend. He signed me to his label ‘Half Life’, and I toured with him for a year. During that tour is when we started getting the attention of a lot of labels. My management company (Black Box Management) negotiated one of the best deals for a new artist. We have a lot of creative freedom, and the label is very supportive. Describe how you felt when you finally signed that record deal; it must have been a big moment for you! It happened eight months ago and I actually signed the contract on the last day of my university career. I had just finished my last exam. After signing it, I realised that I had completed both of my goals on the very same day, which was crazy! I finished school and I got myself a record deal on the same day. A lot of people think getting signed to a record label is “making it”. Is being a signed artist what you expected? I thought the same thing. I thought getting signed was the platform that would propel my career. It’s fallen short of my expectation in terms of timelines but the resources that I have now are amazing. For example, they’ve flown me to Toronto and LA for writing and recording trips. You have to just see the label as an extra tool in your career but everything is still on you. The most frustrating thing is the bureaucracy. For example, we have already completed my entire album and now we just have to wait for feedback. When you’re excited about the project you want it to happen right now, but it takes a lot longer than you think. What are some of your most memorable career moments so far? There have been some funny ones and embarrassing
ones actually. I am a huge fan of K-os. I saw him at ‘Osheaga’, which is a big outdoor music festival in Montreal. I was performing there and saw him backstage. I was like a groupie when I saw him – so excited. So I extended my hand to him and said heyyy K-os! He just looked at me and gave me a head nod. No hand shake. I just tried to play it off, haha. Another time, I was on the red carpet at the ‘Much Music Video Awards’ and I saw Justin Bieber. I randomly stuck out my hand, he had no clue who I was but he shook my hand and was like, “hey what’s up”. On a serious note though, one of the most memorable moments was performing at the 2011 ‘Ottawa Blues Fest’. The sun was just setting, and it was a beautiful summer day. People in the crowd were just so receptive of me and it was surreal performing in front of 7000 people, who were all singing along to the words of my song. Who are the people in your life that you can turn to when things are difficult? My girlfriend and my mom. I’ve been with my girlfriend for three years now. We met at university; she’s originally from New Brunswick. What I like most about her is that she wears her heart on her sleeve.
She is the person I can turn to and completely forget about everything and be in the moment with her. What advice do you have for young artists? Never be complacent. You should never feel like you’re doing enough. You always need to push yourself to do more and more. Don’t be arrogant. Over-confidence alienates you from other people. You can’t do this alone. You need a group of people who support you. That’s why I keep good friends around me. I have a lot of Lucian friends up here. They normalise things, and make me feel like nothing has changed. What is your ultimate goal? My end goal is to transcend being a rapper. I want to be seen as an artist. Rap is very egotistical; people want to buy into the hype but I want more than that. I want people to dig my music and the message of positivity. Kayo was recently on tour with Classified; the tour went across Canada and ended on April 2nd. One of his favourite songs he wants to share with his Lucian fans is ‘One Step Away’.

Fit Factor Workout
Is Personal Training Right For You?
T
he biggest problem today is the lack of self-motivation to go to the gym. For some reason, out growing your blue jeans is not enough of a ‘butt buster’ to get off the couch and workout. Unfortunately, many people are forced to get into an exercise routine because the doctor just hit them with, “you’re 45, overweight, and have high cholesterol” – the three primary risk factors for heart disease. Of course, others have chosen a career that doesn’t allow them enough time to workout. In either case, a personal trainer is the best way to go! Personal training has become very popular over the last 5-7 years. It certainly is the new hip way to work out! Many people used to think it was only for the rich and famous – not anymore. Thanks to fitness establishments like REPTS (Registered Exercise Professionals & Therapists), personal training is now much more affordable for the average person, almost as cheap as a regular gym membership. Personal training packages start at EC$150 per month, but without the negative side effects of regular local gym membership, which include impersonal, intrusive, little attention and guidance, no programme, no diets, no standardised progress checks or results monitoring, and in most cases, little to no results. The average half-hour session at REPTS ranges from EC$25.00 to EC$50.00. Of course, there are trainers out there that are less expensive, but remember, you get what you pay for. So be sure you’re getting a qualified professional for a price that will fit your budget. In any case, the questions you must
24

ultimately answer are these: “Is pursuing a healthier lifestyle worth the money?” and “Can I forgo some of the other expenses for a better investment in my own health?”
Choosing A Personal Trainer Now, the first questions that you might want answered are, “What exactly is a personal trainer?” and “How do I know whether he or she is qualified?” A personal trainer is not simply one who can prepare a workout specifically for you to reach your health and fitness goals but one who is professionally acknowledged as having sufficient knowledge and understanding of the human body – how it works, nutritional information, how to apply it and of course, one who exercises.
You want to make sure the trainer has the ability to meet your needs – whatever these needs might be. Never hesitate to emphasise an old injury or diseases such as diabetes or asthma, or hereditary factors that could hinder your workout. Always ask the trainer for his or her training approach, where satisfying your needs are concerned. What Are The Benefits Of A Personal Trainer? 1. Motivation – Consistency is the name of the game. Personal training keeps you consistent and gives you the incentives to keep you going and dedicated to your fitness plan. 2. Form/Guidance – Many people injure themselves trying to work out on their own, especially given the advent of video based programmes like, ‘P90X’ and ‘Insanity’. This can lead to discouragement and ultimately failure in your plan. A trainer will guide you through your exercises showing you proper techniques and teaching you how to incorporate them into your lifestyle. After all, video based programmes are not interactive enough to offer the same utility value of an actual trainer. 3. Maximising Time With Results – A personal trainer will maximise time that might otherwise be wasted, wondering what to do next. Many people don’t get the results they want, so they quit.
What’s Involved In A Session? • Assessment of goals • Body fat analysis (not every session) • Girth measurements (not every session) • Cardiovascular conditioning • Muscular conditioning with body weight, free weights and machines • Stretching for flexibility • Sport - specific training (if needed) • Pre/postnatal training (where necessary) • Post rehabilitation (only for specific type of clients) • Nutrition consultations, etc If you are a person who has a hard time getting motivated to work out – you find it boring, you have reached a plateau or you feel you are spinning wheels on the bike but getting no results – you are a prime candidate for a personal trainer. So, happy hunting! orn to a mother who was an award-winning music teacher, Petronilla Deterville, and to a father, George Deterville, who fancied himself a singer; 24-year-old Johann Deterville has been raised by music. “It’s part of my DNA you know. I’m sure if you did a test, you would get musical notes in there,” he said with a warm laugh. He’s gone from being a wobbly 5-year-old piano player at The ‘St. Lucia School of Music’ to being a student at ‘The Centre for Arts and Technology’ in Halifax and the go-to keyboard player for St. Lucian star rapper, Kayo (featured in this issue). Tell Dazzle Magazine about your upbringing. I grew up in Anse la Raye but my parents worked in Castries. I went to the RC Boys School but as a toddler I lived with my aunt in Anse la Raye. I remember spending a lot of time going to the bay side, because I loved to swim. We played a lot of cricket and soccer but I didn’t get to spend too much time on the road because my family was very strict. Once it got dark I had to hurry inside. I grew up in a very musical family; my mom started teaching music when she was just 15. My dad wasn’t a great singer (haha) but he always enjoyed singing. I grew up attending choir rehearsals with my mom, and eventually started singing with her choir for a while (way in the back), both in church and at festivals. Eventually I got into

playing the piano. My mom just put me down in front of a piano and I loved the sound. I wasn’t a natural, but I just knew I loved it. At the age of 5, my mom enrolled me with ‘The St. Lucia School of Music’ and I would say my musical journey started from there. I fell in love with the instrument and never turned my back on it. How did you get the name Yogi? Oh boy, it’s one of those school names you know. One of my friends from school just thought it would be funny to call me “Yogi” when I specifically said my name was “Johann”. I’m assuming he thought it was spelt with “Yo” as opposed to “Jo”, so I guess it kind of stuck with me. Tell us about your mother’s influence on you growing up. Man! My mom pushed me a lot, though sometimes I didn’t want to go to classes. She would make sure that I did, so I am grateful for that. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have acquired this skill. Every time I think about it, I realise that it was such a good decision I made to continue on with music and piano, and I know that my mom really wanted me to do it. Today, I feel like I am continuing her legacy, she has done a lot for her community and country so I can’t let all her hard work go to waste, I’ve got plans! Thanks Mom. One of Johann’s darkest moments would come when his beloved mother suddenly died from meningitis. Tell us about that moment, how did it affect you? It was in 2010, and I was going to school in Jamaica at the time. I got a call from my dad who said she was in the hospital. Immediately I prepared for the worst. Then he called a few hours later and told me she died and that I should come home. It’s weird… but I cried for maybe 10 minutes then I stopped. I felt fine… I felt like my mom was telling me, “Ok I’m good now, you don’t have to worry, just keep doing your thing.” I took it really positively. I felt like now I have someone above looking out for me, you know. That itself motivates me every day, making her proud. Johann’s mother died doing what she loved most… teaching music. She was helping a group of kids at the cultural centre with a musical production and wanted to drive them home. Despite not feeling well, she waited for hours until they were done rehearsing. That was a Friday. On Saturday she still wasn’t feeling well but didn’t bother with the doctor. By the next day, she couldn’t move
her entire left side and was rushed to hospital, where she died. Everything happens for a reason. She was the one who pushed me to go to school in Jamaica. One day she just said, “you’re going”. Within two weeks I was off! If I had decided not to go, I think her death would have destroyed me but knowing that I am doing something she would have been proud of, keeps me going.” How did you make the move from ‘The Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts’in Jamaica to going to school at ‘The Centre for Arts and Technology’ in Halifax? Well I was enrolled in a great jazz and music performance programme in Jamaica but I didn’t feel it was what I really wanted to do. My love has always been in the studio so I decided to find an audio engineering school. My brother was already studying at Saint Mary’s in Halifax, and plus Kayo kept saying to me that I should come up and play keys for him. Now you are basically Kayo’s go-to guy. How did that relationship happen? It’s funny because Kayo never wanted my beats. I always tease him about that. He and my older brother were friends and I started sending him my stuff over msn when I was 16. Looking back, they were obviously not up to standard. My first production, the beat was named ‘Equinox’ (don’t ask why). At the time, I thought it was the bomb! I wouldn’t want to hear it now. My first recording was done with a computer mic and my brother Nathan, who was rapping on that Equinox beat. My brothers have always been supportive of my music, thanks guys. So Kayo and I only started working in 2010 while I was still in school in Jamaica. He said that he needed someone to mix and master some tracks for him. So, he sent me a little test first and was shocked at what I sent back. I did this thing literally in my bedroom with cheap equipment and they loved it! What I did was better than what the pro in Canada had done for them. So I felt like a king! At that point I realised, hey my stuff is actually good and that’s when I started focussing on it career wise. How did your dad feel about you moving away from classical piano towards producing in studio? He said, “do whatever you want, I will support you,” and that is so important. I see a lot of kids in Saint Lucia give up on their dreams because their family
www.dazzlethemag.com
DAZZLE 27
doesn’t support them. Saint Lucia is full of talent and I see so many kids getting into music; their parents don’t show up for rehearsals or shows because they think it’s not important. They have no idea how that affects the kid. They may not say it, but it hurts. With family support and a fierce drive to succeed, Johann got hired by Kayo to fully mix and master his mixtape in 2010. Johann also had the chance to produce a song for him called ‘Different’ which made it onto the mixtape. Johann, tell Dazzle about that. That was a big deal for me. We came home to Saint Lucia during Christmas and Kayo came to my home studio in Anse la Raye. We were actually meeting for the first time. We recorded and produced everything from scratch – all in one night. It was Christmas Eve. When we were done, I remember we rushed down to ‘The Wave’ radio station and convinced them to play one of the tracks we did on the radio. That was called ‘Take Me Home’. Johann has been in Halifax a little over a year now and says the most exciting thing he’s done so far is work on Kayo’s first official album, (to be released under Universal) and be part of a tour with Kayo and rapper, Xhibit. Johann, what has that been like? That was December of last year. It was just a weekend tour but it was like living out my dream. I always used to dream of flying off somewhere to perform at a show. We went to Newfoundland which is a pretty small place, so people were freaking out and asking for my autograph. I was like, “Wow, I’m only Yogi.” It was amazing though, everyone was asking for pictures, it was a wonderful feeling. I felt like a star. You have said that working on Kayo’s album has been priceless in terms of everything that you have been able to learn and accomplish in such a short space of time… I jumped over a lot of heads because of Kayo. As soon as I landed in Canada I was working with veteran artistes – going on tour with Snoop Dogg, Xhibit and Classified. Sometimes in the studio, I just sit back and look around me and think, “wow, you did good Yogi”. Describe a typical studio session with Kayo? Whenever we get into the studio we have no idea what we are going to do. Kayo will tell me what kind of vibe he is going for with a song, whether it’s smooth or up-tempo. I will just start playing chord progressions, that’s where my musical knowledge comes in. Once I have one progression down, stuff 28 DAZZLE www.dazzlethemag.com
just comes to mind, it just comes naturally. In terms of inspiration, I feel like music just pours out of me. You can really feel the emotion in my music but I don’t draw on my emotions for inspiration. For example, I cannot make a beat if I am not in a good mood. I can’t draw from anger or pain the way other artists do. I have tried but I just end up getting frustrated. All I know is that I get completely lost in the sounds. This guy once said to me, “hey you need to stop making those ugly faces when you’re playing on stage”. I said, “it’s the music man”; I don’t care what I look like. Who is the biggest influence in your musical career and why? That’s easy! I think Kanye West is a genius when it comes to making hip-hop music. He is extremely creative and his choice of rhythmic patterns is what always gets me. Sometimes for inspiration I will visit YouTube and just search: “Kanye West in studio”. “Good Life” is one of my favourite records from Kanye! Music is forever changing. How do you keep up? Having a background in classical music makes it very easy for me to adjust, and I would say classical music made it possible for a lot of other genres to develop. Also, I listen to all types of music. I mostly keep my ears open for reoccurring patterns in the music, and try to figure out, what really puts that musical piece in its genre. Take dub step for example, it really is the wobble and crazy manipulation of noise oscillators that defines it. In other words, it’s the stuff that sounds like Transformers fighting – that’s dubstep! What are your plans for the future? When I am done with school, I want to honour my mom’s work with children in music back home in Saint Lucia. Every weekend she would give free music lessons, and I used to help her. I want to teach music theory through technology. My dream is to see recording arts as a CXC programme.

Taribba Joan même bete - bags
carrying a piece of history... wherever you go If you’ve noticed that the lady sitting next to you on the bus has a fantastic little leather purse in her lap or if you’ve been distracted in line at the bank by the gorgeous African-print clutch that this woman is holding, you’ve probably been bitten by the même bete... bug – and it’s no import! These eye catching luxury accessories are made by a homegrown Lucian – Mrs. Taribba Joan do Nascimento, founder of même bete... bags, and for now, Taribba is the head craftswoman.
W
hile living in Ethiopia working in international development, Taribba became enamoured with the bright bold patterns of traditional African cloth. “It really all started after I had my first child. My career was really important to me but I just couldn’t see myself leaving my son at home with a stranger to go back to work”, says Taribba. She began by buying and selling small bags at a local bazaar, until another bag maker approached her stall. “He said, ‘wow these are so nice, I would like to see your workshop.’ He was stunned when I told him I had no idea how to sew a bag!” Taribba recalled. That kind stranger would later become a mentor of sorts, showing Taribba how to buy cloth at the right price (as a foreigner in a strange land), guiding her on 34

the purchase of her first sewing machine and making emergency house calls when she just couldn’t seem to thread her machine right. “It was easier said than done. Making a leather bag is so labour intensive. You have to glue the bag first before sewing it. It’s a very precise process. I’ve gotten really good at it but I never feel like any of the bags are ever perfect.” Taribba explained. Perhaps the popularity of the même bete... bags lies in the imperfections of the pure originality. Each one is made of African Dutch wax and Ethiopian leather. “The high demand for these bags is something I never expected, because they are not cheap. For example,

my best seller costs EC$250 but the kinds of women who buy my bags are the ones that appreciate the stories behind every piece of authentic cloth.” Taribba said. So how did this former diplomat and island scholar end up spending most of her time on a sewing machine? Taribba graduated from Sir Arthur Lewis Community College as an island scholar with the prize in Academic Excellence. She graduated from the University of Toronto with honors in 2001 with a specialisation in English Literature. She began volunteering at Save the Children Canada and eventually found her way to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital. “Although my background is mostly academic, inside I always had this creative flair and the bottom line is... this makes me happy.” Taribba said. Taribba cites her mother as one of her strongest supporters: “She never made me feel like I was doing something silly. To stop working and sit and make bags, she never made me feel I was disappointing her. While other family members have had their reservations, she never has. I never allow any negativity to discourage me.” In fact, même bete... is a bit of a family affair. Taribba’s husband (who she met in Ethiopia) is constantly pushing her to expand and when things are busy, everyone from her mother, her mother’s friends, to the helper and gardener pitch in to make même bete... a success.
bags
accessories
The même bete... bags are fashionable and functional. They are not overly ornate or designed, as not to take away from the overwhelming beauty of the African print. “My inspiration for the bags comes from just wanting to have the kind of pieces that work for me. Sometimes you just wish your bag had a pocket or a zip in a particular place for a certain sized item. Those are the kind of details I think of.” Taribba said of the bags. The name of the brand même bete... is derived from a Lucian Creole saying which translates to “we’re all the same”. The unique pieces from Taribba’s line, however, are anything but similar, keeping these one-of-a-kind handbags in high demand all year round. Taribba takes a special enjoyment in describing the stories behind the cloth to her customers when handing over her prized creations. “These pieces are the real thing! Every African cloth has a different name – a different story. I talk to my customers about how it is dyed, that you can feel the texture or see that it is printed on both sides – which are all key signs of the authenticity.” It’s a risky move in a market where China has taken over but Taribba says she refuses to ‘water down’ her product: “I try to buy all my cloth in Africa. I get batiks from Ghana, and these are hand dyed, they are not printed. Often the cloth alone costs more than the leather but it’s important for me to offer authentic African products.”
she loves so much, in order to grow the business. “That’s kind of what I fear. I never wanted to be just a manager of a business. I went from not knowing anything about sewing bags, to being completely in love with the process.” She said. “Actually, sitting and making the bags is what I enjoy most, believe it or not. It’s a challenge for me, which I love. It is really hard work but it’s almost therapeutic for me. To come home after my day job and sit at the machine and sew for a few hours is pure joy for me,” Taribba continued. With the increasing popularity of même bete... bags, Taribba is on the brink of a huge expansion. “I also do bags for conferences, so there are times when I make 200 bags in six weeks and all of my customers are repeat customers. Once they buy one, they just keep coming back.” Taribba said. Most customers contact Taribba directly at meme. bete@gmail.com to make an order. But you can also find her bags online at https://www.facebook. com/meme.bete, at St. Lucia airport kiosks or at any craft festival on the island.
With the Jazz Festival coming up, Taribba is working overtime to produce some new designs to offer music lovers. “A lot of people don’t expect there to be amazing things like this for sale at the Jazz Festival but I’ll be there!” she says with her beaming signature smile. Her busiest season by far is during Jounen Kweyol, she explained: “It’s all about the outfits! Women want five different bags for every day to match their outfits. So, I mix in the madras with the African cloth and customers are able to get a real piece of history reflected in their accessory.” With orders pouring in from airports across the Caribbean including Trinidad and Barbados, Taribba knows she may have to step back from the process 36

How to Wear Fishnet Stockings at the Office and Still Look Professional
Y
ou’ve seen them I’m sure; young ladies on their way to work in their miniskirts and fishnets with open-toe rubber flats. This type of attire makes one look unprofessional. St. Lucians have created a reputation for themselves of being a people who adopt styles and attempt to modify them as best as they can to express some sense of individuality and uniqueness. This, at times, is done to a fault, as is the case with young women wearing fishnets to the office. Don’t misunderstand me, we get it! You’re tired of the same ol’ nylons. Fishnets are not banned from the office, but they have to be done right. The wrong way to wear fishnets to work is to wear the wrong fishnets. Your wide-holed, slice-your-thigh fishnets should be worn to the club, be it strip club or dance club, but not to your place of work. You should also refrain from wearing fishnets that are heavily designed with flower patterns, “diamonds” and rips. Generally, fishnets give the impression that the wearer is daring, sexy and seductive, qualities that a young professional ought not to make part of the list of adjectives used to describe her in an office setting or business establishment. Your hosiery (fancy word for stockings) should never detract attention from your professional endeavours. As a professional, you want to ensure that you attract the right kind of attention that will earn you the respect you deserve for your hard work. Women in the workplace face enough challenges as it is. So just how should a professional wear her fishnets? Here are a few pointers which should help address this dilemma:
able to tell that you are in fact wearing fishnets. This prevents you from showing off your legs in a seductive, sultry manner. • Design? Keep them design free. The net pattern is design enough! • The colour of your fishnets is also an important factor to consider. Let’s keep in mind that fishnets are NOT traditional office attire and it is still growing on some superiors. “Bad” enough you’re wearing fishnets, worse if you’re walking around in some sky-blue, fiery red or lemon-green fishnets! Tone it down. Black, charcoal, brown and skin tones are your best picks. •
Wear your fishnets (the tight mesh, subtlecoloured ones. Remember?) with closed-toe shoes. Toes that look ‘caught’ are not cute.
• If you’re wearing a skirt with your fishnets, it should reach no more than half of an inch above your knee. Remember, you are at work, not the club. Many still view fishnets as hosiery for night-time frolic. Pairing them with a miniskirt would definitely send the wrong signal. As stated earlier, fishnets are not traditionally considered professional attire. However, neither was wearing such bold colours as turquoise and emerald green. Yet both, if done correctly, can draw attention to your hard work and professionalism, especially if complemented by proper articulation and poise. Respect yourself, respect your place of work, and respect your co-workers. Keep it classy!

They say, ‘everything that glitters is not gold’ but for 25-year-old, Iva Latoya Lewis surely everything she touches radiates and glistens. Her brand, ‘Glamour Art by Toya’ is making significant strides in the world of beauty, as Latoya utilises her creative insight to create flawless and effervescent faces. Dazzle pulls out its pages and lets Latoya paint her story for your enjoyment. ‘Toya’, as she is affectionately known, is another Saint Lucian beauty, born and raised in Reduit, GrosIslet. She attended the Babonneau Secondary School, where upon leaving, her art of beauty story began.
L
atoya explained, “I was first introduced to make-up about nine years ago by my then manager, Mrs. Rosemary Deligny. At the time, they were conducting interviews for an Iman representative for Saint Lucia. Though I had little interest in it, I thought it would have been a great opportunity. So I interviewed and I became the only Iman rep. for Saint Lucia for three and half years.” A few years later, Latoya would become a trained and certified MAC Cosmetics specialist, developing a ‘name’ for herself and becoming well-known for her work. “So why not?” Latoya exclaimed about starting her brand.
Soca facts From ‘Glamour Art by Toya’ to Toya-Soca Where did you start singing? I started off as lead alto in the Bethel Tabernacle Chorale. How did you start singing soca? I hung out with Qpid and other soca artistes; soon I started singing back up for calypsonians and soca artistes. Eventually in 2008, I decided to come to the forefront as Derek Yarde wrote a song for me called ‘Feel the Rhythm’. Tell us about the song ‘Carnival’. Precision Productions contacted me, saying that they loved my song, ‘Carnival’ which I wrote on my own, and it was produced by Vibez Productionz. Do you see a career in soca music? Yes, I would love to work with our local producers, as they are really talented. I want to be the Saint Lucian female artiste that’s recognised across the region.
Having realised her talent and potential as a make-up artist, along with her nurtured love for the craft and the demand for professional make-up artists on island, Latoya decided to start, ‘Glamour Art by Toya’. “Glamour Art by Toya’ is only three years old but has done significantly well thus far”, she explained. “It is just a baby”. Latoya who currently manages and runs ‘Glamour Art by Toya’ on her own, boasts two of her main clients which are Bay Gardens Beach Resorts and Red Unlimited Carnival Band. Creativity is not easily harnessed and many artists have to find ways of channelling and maximising their true potential. Latoya finds hers, whilst sitting at home, playing with colours and designing her face. This provides her with inspiration and allows her to ‘think outside the box’. “I look at someone’s face as a canvas, people have different shaped faces and eyes and different features, so when I commence an application I get to harness that creativity.” Latoya said. For make-up artists to have their work acclaimed often amounts to other achievements. Latoya’s work has done just that, as it seems persons from all over the world are learning of her unique and illustrious talent. Latoya recounts, “My most memorable moment is when I received an email from a client from Australia who was visiting the island and wanted her make-up done by me.” Latoya points out that she gets most creative doing “carnival make-up”. She further explained, “I go overboard with the colours, I can get creative with jewels, feathers and other accessories. I can go really crazy, contouring and structuring the face; I can make it look really artistic.” In the next five years Latoya would like to own her own store, she also wants ‘Glamour Art by Toya’ to become global. Latoya shared her dream: “I would also like to be the winner of the Caribbean Make-up Artist of the Year award or just recognised.” Dazzle would like to wish Latoya all the best and to urge her to continue striving for greatness.

Building Beyond The
Mind’s Eye
Darwin P. Kingsley wrote: “You have powers you never dreamed of. You can do things you never thought you could do. There are no limitations in what you can do except the limitations of your own mind.” Too often we tell ourselves, “I cannot”, and so we never reach our true potential. There are some people who never limit themselves to mere circumstantial situations but set their minds to accomplish a dream and live it. Dazzle would like to introduce one such person. His name is Junior Ricardo Joseph – 33-year-old avid and determined business owner.
J
unior is the owner and manager of ‘Beyond Limits Design Construction Ltd’. The company’s tag line, “Restricted Only by the Mind’s Eye”, is quite fitting for this young entrepreneur who believes “you have to be ready to assume the challenge and to stick with it”. Junior was born and raised in the community of Marchand but now resides in Monchy, Gros-Islet. Junior recounts his school days as fun and daring as he admitted to, “giving a lot of trouble”. Nonetheless he was a passionate and disciplined athlete, who dominated the field as a long distance runner. He first attended the St Aloysius R C Boys Infant and Primary Schools, then the Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School. He later attended Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and is now enrolled with the University of Reading. When Dazzle asked him to share his original career path, Junior exclaimed, “I was always interested in construction!” 42

construction, this way, I believe I can make a difference.” He added.‘Beyond Limits Design Construction Ltd’ offers a full range of construction services including designing and building of residential, industrial and commercial properties, maintenance, civil works and consultation and project management. Junior aspires for his company to be one of the best, “not in the sense of earning millions of dollars but in providing a product that is sustainable and meets customer standards,” he said. He also hopes to help low income earners by building houses which are affordable. This, he believes can be done by providing a payment plan for potential homeowners. Junior says however, this dream will only be possible with enough financial support.
His introduction into the field was through his next-door neighbour, Mr. Edward, who at the time was employed with Peter & Company. “He employed me as a labourer and from there I was able to understand the industry, including the jargon.” Junior recalled. His interest was always in owning his own business. After years of working in the construction industry, gaining extensive experience and being employed by others, Junior decided to build his dream and opened his own company.
Junior also co-owns ‘Route 69’,located in Bois D’Orange, where he spends his Friday evenings and invites everyone to stop by.
Built by Beyond Limits Design Construction Ltd “I saw the viability of the industry, so I decided to branch out. It was a tough decision to make but life is full of risks and challenges – so I took it on!” Junior explained. “I also want to make the industry even more viable by setting up an association for
A young, ambitious man whom we wish immeasurable success, Junior urges young entrepreneurs to go for it! “If you have a dream, no matter how small, start somewhere until you can achieve those big goals. In achieving goals, invest wisely and stay focused!” he said. Although sometimes wishing for more hours in a day, he is thankful for what he is able to accomplish daily. There is so much more that Junior would like to do and one thing is for sure he is not limited by the mind’s eye.

eineken, the original sponsor of the original Saint Lucia Jazz Festival is the official beer and Gold sponsor of the revamped, Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival. Through its sponsorship, Heineken has been committed and has provided support and assistance in bringing the 22-year-old Festival to Saint Lucians and visitors alike, island-wide. The Festival, which continues to exceed expectations year after year, along with Heineken, the world’s leading beer, continues to create a dynamic synergy that brings the best festival experience, found right here in Saint Lucia. The “Fringe” events having grown in leaps and bounds have earned a place as an integral part of the Festival. For many visitors, particularly those from around the region, as well as many Saint Lucians, the collection of community events has become “their” Jazz, bringing visitors and locals closer together to appreciate great music as well as the cultural heritage of the island. In light of this, Heineken is not just a sponsor of the main-stage events, but also a major sponsor of many of these community events, taking place in various

parts of the island. These include ‘Jazz in the South’ in Laborie and Vieux Fort; in the East, Heineken is happy to support Fond D’or Jazz with headline act, Kassav; to the North, the reemergence of ‘Jazz on the square’ and ‘Jazz on the Grill’, to name a few. Heineken is thrilled, that over the past 21 years has been able to help facilitate new innovations and growth within the spectrum of the Festival. With Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival, the hottest ticket around, it is only fitting that the coldest and official beer, Heineken continues to partner with this great event all over the island from April 30th to May 12th as we celebrate 22 years of great people, great music, great food on one great island with one great beer, Heineken.

Live the Jazz with “Vive Le Jazz”

ou cannot help but reminisce on past vacations or the events that you attended – with wonderful thoughts, photography or memorabilia! Every time you sip coffee from that exotic mug you purchased while in the land of steel pan, you are taken right back to Trinidad Carnival, and that expensive watch you lost while gyrating to the sounds of soca on Fantastic Friday. Anyway, back to reality and you are now arriving at an office downtown for a meeting. As you enter the office – there on the managing director’s desk is the statue of the “peeing boy” next to the metal Eiffel tower – someone here has visited Brussels and Paris, you think, whilst fiddling with the cheap key chain your frugal but favourite cousin bought you on his recent trip to London. No matter how much our memories linger, it is always good to bring a piece of your vacation back home.
As we are on the heels of the 22nd anniversary of the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival, renamed appropriately – Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival, Cerulean Inc. has taken up the challenge of leaving lasting memories with Saint Lucia’s ever increasing Jazz fans and patrons by developing uniquely crafted memorabilia aptly branded, “Vive Le Jazz”. Dazzle Magazine was afforded a quick peek of the product, “Vive Le Jazz”. This finely crafted piece is unique in every sense. “Vive Le Jazz” memorabilia will be unveiled and available for purchase at the Pigeon Island National Landmark main stage events. Dazzle Magazine has negotiated a 5% discount for all our subscribers; and guess what, anyone who purchases a “Vive Le Jazz” piece will automatically obtain a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy 2 Tab. Resort and was broadcast live on radio, television and online. Now in its 22nd year, the Festival, complete with a brand new logo, will include a broad creative component. Since announced, the big music names that have had everyone talking about the 13-day long
Festival taking place from April 30th to May 12th 2013 are ‘R&B King’ himself, R. Kelly, Akon, Ginuwine and The Jacksons. Prior to the official start of the launching event that evening, was a red carpet affair that guests compared to the red carpet of an award show like the Grammy’s. This prefix of press interviews, socialising and mingling, set the tone for the festive night ahead and the Festival itself. Once inside the Ballroom, the audience, made up of tourism officials, specially invited guests and members of the media waited with bated breath for the much-anticipated programme ahead.

The launch played out as an appetiser of what the new Festival promises – a showcase of Saint Lucian talent! Notable mentions of the night included Saint Lucian-born actor, Joseph Marcel, most known for his role as Jeffery on the hit sitcom ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’, who made a presentation via video to a pleasantly surprised audience; Adrian Augier’s literally performance, Shane Ross’s touching performance of his song ‘Tjenbé’, from the celebrated Saint Lucian film ‘The Coming of Org’, performances by students of the Saint Lucia School of Music and even a flash mob by a local dance company, kept the audience entertained and wanting more. Speaking at the launch, Minister for Tourism Lorne Theophilus said, “After setting the musical benchmark for over two decades, Saint Lucia as a destination needed to redefine not only itself, but critically its flagship special events activity.” As the name suggests, the new rebranded and repositioned Festival promises not only music but also creative incorporation as Tourism officials seek to unleash Saint Lucia’s creative edge. The Festival’s new structure of artistic activities is set to include local
talent in drama & dance, steel pan, spoken word, culinary showcases, film making, fashion shows and much more. Under the arts component is Headphunk, who were featured in Dazzle’s premiere issue! To set the tone for the fashion component of the new Festival, Tourism Minister Lorne Theophilus, Tourism Director Louis Lewis, Deputy Chairman of the Saint Lucia Tourist Board, Thaddeus Antoine and CDF Chairman Petrus Compton were all clad in cool Caribbean linen tunics and trousers by Saint Lucian designer, Queen Esther (Kumba designs). The Minister of Tourism said, “As we seek to

implement our new strategic focus, it became necessary to forge closer linkages between the traditional festival line-up and a now burgeoning creative industries sector.” This year’s event promises a cross-island affair, including the opening at the Mindoo Phillip Park, the return of ‘Jazz on the Square’, Jazz at Balenbouche Estate in the South and ‘Jazz on the Beach’. There will be new components to include key events into the Festival, like Friday night street parties and of course the events at the Gaiety on Rodney Bay, Fond d’Or Heritage Park in Dennery and Jazz in the South. As done before, the entire event will be capped off with the main stage grand finale at Pigeon Island National Landmark on Mother’s Day. If the launch was any indication of what the cultural aspect to the Festival has to offer, the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival will be ushering the island into a new era. Be sure to check out the official schedule of events at stluciajazz.org. Dazzle is all set to live the music and culture of the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival!

he Samsung Galaxy S4 is designed to make your life richer, simpler, and more fun! Each feature was designed to simplify our lives, even monitor our health and well-being. Fitted with a polycarbonate case, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is slimmer (7.9mm) and lighter (130g) than the previous Samsung Galaxy S3. It has a larger Super AMOLED screen, topping 5 inches in Full HD. This phone is also fitted with Gorilla Glass 3, making it more durable than before! By simply hovering your finger over the screen, allows you to preview emails or photos without having to actually open the file. Outdoing themselves as always, Samsung outfitted this phone with a 13-megapixel rear camera including Flash and a high-speed shutter mode and to the front, the phone sports a 2-megapixel camera. With this new Dual camera feature, you can operate both cameras at the same time. For instance, you can film yourself with the front camera and superimpose yourself as a floating stamp into the shot using the rear camera! The Galaxy S4 comes with a 1.6GHz Quad-Core processor. The new chip’s eight-core design means that there are four powerful Cortex-A15 cores to support the most powerful apps and four lower-power Cortex-A7 models for simpler tasks. If the more powerful cores are not needed, the phone shuts them down, thereby extending the battery life.
One of the new features on the S4 is the Health function; this allows you to measure your weight, calorie intake, and even works as a pedometer. Multiplayer gaming is also an option on the Galaxy S4 with a customised gaming control available to use with the device. The S4 also has an IR transmitter which you can use to control your home entertainment kit via the WatchOn app. S Voice drive gives you a simpler interface for when you’re driving and recognises voice prompts. The phone even has a translation service for when you travel. This allows you to type a message in one language while the phone reads it out loud
in a different one. The spoken reply is then converted back into your language on screen. Without a doubt, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is the biggest thing to hit the Android market this year. With the new Key Lime Pie operating system, this device will be able to support you in your professional and personal life and will bring people together in ways never thought possible from a Smartphone.
