EXH 06:

HISTORIC VILLAGE OF ROCKFORD

The Village of Rockford was established in 1789 and served as the county seat of Surry County until 1850. The Town developed not only as the seat of government, but also as a commercial center with hotels, taverns, and stores. Due to the Yadkin River and nearby hills, the Town was limited in size. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the railroad once again brought life to Rockford for a short period of time. The Town of Rockford was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and includes buildings in the central business district primarily built between about 1790 and 1930.
