GARDEN HISTORY
In the 1930s, visionary Phoenicians joined forces to protect and display the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. Their plan came to fruition in 1939 with the opening of Desert Botanical Garden. Our founders envisioned the Garden becoming “a compelling attraction that brings to life the many wonders of the desert.”
Over time, thanks to leadership and generous investments from the community, the Garden’s permanent plant exhibits and seasonal art exhibitions have indeed become a vibrant and compelling point of pride.

CHIHULY– THREE TIMES THE CHARM
The Garden has a successful track record of Blockbuster Exhibitions. In 2008-2009, Dale Chihuly’s stunning glass sculptures drew 546,000 visitors, and a return exhibition in 2013-2014 attracted a record-breaking 632,000 guests of which 30,000 were tourists that secured $22.2 million in economic impact.
Nighttime viewing became wildly popular, as the changing light infused Chihuly’s works with heightened drama. In 2021-2022, the Garden and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West’s joint exhibition, Chihuly in the Desert, attracted more than 601,000 local and international visitors who spent $22 million in metro Phoenix.

NIGHTTIME APPEAL
In 2015-2016, the Garden presented its first evening-only exhibition. Artist Bruce Munro’s immersive, large-scale installations—Sonoran Light—attracted 318,000 visitors, and had a substantial economic impact and visibility within the community.
The Garden’s second evening exhibit was Electric Desert | A Light and Sound Experience. The cactus and desert became a living canvas in this nighttime experience, taking visitors on an immersive journey through the Garden using light and original music. The exhibit brought in $32 million in economic impact and 357,272 guests.

FRAMERATE: DESERT PULSE
In October 2025, Desert Botanical Garden will premiere a monumental new art exhibit that is years in the making. Desert Pulse, a creatively and technically ambitious series of artworks, will take visitors on a journey through a year in the life of the Sonoran Desert, in an immersive experience never done before at the Garden.
Utilizing state-of-the art technology and high-resolution, immersive exhibit displays, Desert Pulse reveals the rhythms of nature, desert plants and manmade environments across the Valley that cannot otherwise be experienced by the human eye. The work will be realized as several breathtaking screen installations around the Garden and a large-scale immersive exhibition in the Garden’s new The RAF Exhibit Gallery.

SCANLAB PROJECTS
ScanLAB Projects is a pioneering creative practice; an art studio and research laboratory, led by artists / architects / technologists Matt Shaw and William Trossell.
Shaw and Trossell share a common passion for highly-crafted making and storytelling that manifests in their digital and physical works. Their studio is comprised of a diverse team who experiment with groundbreaking technical development and cutting-edge artistry on a daily basis.
ScanLAB’s primary medium is 3D scanning, a form of machine vision that they argue is the future of photography and spatial representation. As the electronic eyes for billions of mobile phones and driverless vehicles, 3D laser scanners are the cartographers of the future. By critically observing places and events through the eyes of these machines ScanLAB’s work hopes to glance at the future we will all inhabit.
ScanLAB’s award-winning work has been featured on the BBC, The Guardian and The New York Times and has been exhibited internationally, including at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The New Museum NYC, South by Southwest and the Venice Biennale.
SUSTAINABILITY & IMPACT
Desert Pulse is an artwork underpinned by sustainable values. ScanLAB Projects and the Garden have rigorously considered and documented the impacts of making and exhibiting this work at all stages of its production so far. Together they are committed to upholding these values in the future, and ask any venues, partners and supporters to join in taking these values forward. At times, this means making decisions that cost more but impact less.
