Welcome back to the Domain for Matamata Swifts’ first home games of the 2016 season. We have a full house today with all three senior men’s teams drawn at home. We host Waikato Unicol in a WaiBOP Premiership/Championship double header, while the Swifts ‘A’ team runs out against Eastern City. It’s timely, then, that our overflow changing facilities at the swimming pool complex are pretty much ready to go. The club’s facilities at the Domain are fairly limited so it’s great to have some extra space for everyone to change, shower and have a bit of a yarn in pre- and post-match. A big thank you goes to Mal, Abba, Dobbo, Dwayne and Tony from Laser Plumbing for making this happen. On the field we won one of four senior fixtures opening weekend. Oddly enough it was the first team that grabbed the win, while the other teams, including the ladies, found themselves on the wrong side of a variety of scorelines. I say oddly for the first team because it was the first time the Swifts have won on the first day of the season since 2009. It’s good to have that monkey off the back... Unicol began the season in spectacular fashion by recording a double over Cambridge last Saturday with a couple of 2-1 wins. The smart money is on Unicol to be dark horses for the Premiership title so I look forward to seeing how we shape up today. With an extra mens team and a Federation under-13 team to cater for this season our playing field area has undergone another reconfiguration. The second full size field is back, after having a breather during 2015, meaning we’ll lose a bit of space for our various junior fields. We’ll manage this year, but it would be a massive help if we had a dry winter. Any assistance ensuring that would be useful... I hope you enjoy today. Football’s back. Gotta love it!
