Welcome to the Domain for the start of the 2017 season. Today we host a full set of games, with all three men’s teams starting their season in familiar surroundings. The first and reserves get underway with something of a cross-Kaimai double header. Our Loaded WaiBOP Premiership campaign kicks off against Tauranga Boys’ College in what I expect will be an open and competitive match. After a difficult 2016 Premiership season, Tauranga City United will be hoping for a much better campaign in the Championship. The Swifts A team host Waikato rivals Te Awamutu in a precursor of games between the two old rivals in the Premiership and Championship later in the season. Tomorrow, the Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies travel to play Melville United after somewhat surprisingly ending up in Waikato Ladies Division A this season. There’s nothing a Swift likes more than a challenge, though... Best of luck to all Swifts players and coaching staff for what will hopefully be another productive season. I believe the club’s management committee is probably the strongest and deepest it’s been in my time at the club. We have several talented new faces on the team which, added to the experienced campaigners, gives us a good mix. The result of having a group like this is that stuff tends to get done. The working bee back in February was a good example. Granted we picked probably the hottest day of the summer to lay thousands of pavers but, putting things we can’t control aside, we managed to mobilise a good number of club members to make a contribution towards their club. You can see the outcome of that (plus some more recent) effort as you walk around the club today. Thank you to everyone who helped. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Explaining the 2017 season (well, trying to...) Due to our 2016 finishing position we have ended up in Waikato Women’s Division A for 2017. To be fair, this came as a bit of a shock. There have been a lot of player movements and team withdrawals in the leagues above, which left us as the tenthranked Waikato team ahead of the 2017 season. The 10 team Waikato A league will run for one full round over nine weeks. This will decide the winner of Waikato Division A for 2017. After that, the top 4 teams from each of Waikato A and Bay One Ladies will combine for one full round over 7 weeks. This will decide the winner of the Federation league - a new competition in which points do not carry through. It is the intention that this will give those teams a taste of competition at that level, with a view to them playing there next season. The remaining six teams in Waikato A will start a new competition – the Waikato Women’s Bowl. As this is a new competition points will start from scratch. Carter Memorial Women’s Challenge Cup Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies are the current holders of the Carter Memorial Women’s Challenge Cup. The Carter Memorial Women’s Challenge Cup was donated by the local Carter family for women’s competition in the Waikato. It was introduced in 2015 as a challenge cup, similar to the men’s Federation Challenge Shield. The cup is up for grabs at all home league and cup games of the holders. The team holding the cup at the end of each season will have their name engraved for that year.
WaiBOP Federation Leagues set to go The 2017 football season is just under a fortnight away and the Waikato Bay of Plenty region’s flagship men’s leagues, the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership and the WaiBOP Championship, are set to begin with a bang. With 2015 champions, Cambridge, visiting newly promoted Taupo, a three time winner of the top flight, on opening day, alongside Hamilton and Western Bay of Plenty derbies, there are some tasty early fixtures in store for local football fans. WaiBOP Competitions Manager, Karyn Walters, is pleased to have the draws out for the top two leagues. “It was a bit of an exercise getting to the point where we could confidently publish the draws for both leagues but, with the support of the clubs, we managed it.” Ultimately, three places became available in the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership due to Ngongotaha’s promotion to the NRFL, Tauranga City United’s relegation and Katikati, who received a reprieve from relegation, being unable to field a side in Federation competition. That gave Te Awamutu, who finished third in the Championship, an opening to join the top two from 2016 – champions West Hamilton United and Taupo. “This gives us a spread of clubs from across the region and what looks like
being an incredibly competitive Loaded WaiBOP Premiership,” said Walters. Indeed, going on last season’s form, there doesn’t appear to be a clear favourite for the title. Cambridge will be expected to do well again after three consecutive top two finishes, while Matamata Swifts and Otumoetai will be aiming to build on solid top four finishes in 2016. Most of the other clubs, including all three promoted sides, will also be confidently eyeing top half finishes, or better. Click here for the full Loaded WaiBOP Premiership draw. The alterations to the Premiership caused havoc with the production of the WaiBOP Championship draw. “Yeah, we had some real fun pulling that together with various teams entering then being unable to take their spot,” said Walters, “We had to keep going down the list of teams based on their 2016 finishing positions in both Waikato A and Bay 1. I’m pleased we’ve been able to fill the Championship out with the full quota of twelve teams.” In the end the WaiBOP Championship will contain eight Premiership reserve teams, alongside Tauranga City United, Tokoroa, Hamilton Wanderers and Te Puke United.
