So here we are again. Back at the Domain for the start of another football season. Today’s matches were a late change, which has meant a bit of extra work to get things ready in time, not least the playing surface, but the grounds crew got stuck in and we’re ready to go. Just a quick note on the surface... please slap me if I ever complain about the Domain again. After seeing what the Swifts had to play on in Hamilton last Saturday I think we’re pretty lucky. I just pity West Hamilton having to play a whole season on their surface. And I think we’re all more than a little thankful to have avoided any injuries. Anyway, football’s back, which is great. To say we’ve had an interesting summer would be an understatement. Paul’s rather rapid departure midway through pre-season shook things up a bit, but local Swifts legend Scott Parsonage has stepped into the role he was born for. It’s been a bit rushed on many fronts for Scott, but things are slowly starting to settle down. A big thank you to Dave Taylor for stepping up to help Scott as manager of the team and also to the coaches who have agreed to assist us during the course of the season. The muddle even extended as far as the new playing kit, which for the first and reserve teams, arrived minus half the shirts ahead of last weekend. Thankfully everything’s here now and all our teams, which are all at the Domain this weekend, will step out in their new Nike gear for their home openers. I vaguely remember that new kit feeling. It’s pretty cool so I hope all our players enjoy it. The start of every new season always sees plenty of comings and goings. We have a number of new faces around the club, across all the teams, in 2018 and I’d like to say a big welcome to everyone. A few have moved on, for varying reasons, but they’re always welcome back at the Domain. Remember, we’re all Swifts for Life. Have fun today and I’ll see you on the touchline. Papamoa sound big warning Papamoa’s 10-0 victory at promoted Hamilton Wanderers would have caused the most conversation on a Loaded WaiBOP Premiership opening day that provided many talking points. The result underlined all the pre-season buzz surrounding Papamoa, who proved they’ll be the polar opposite of the abject side that lost all 22 games last season. New coach, Duncan Lowry, has recruited well and will now have his sights set on repeating the 2009 Premiership title he won with Matamata Swifts. Papamoa’s win, their record victory at this level, was built around Andrew Cooper’s four goal. Mitchell Hales and Strauss Boom grabbed a brace each as the young Wanderers side was overrun on their home ground. The trick now will be for Papamoa to repeat this type of result in the tougher games to follow. Lowry, however, has a strong history at this level and higher. After helping Matamata to their sole title he took the Swifts all the way to Northern Region Football League (NRFL) Division 1, before hauling Tauranga City United to the NRFL Premier League from Division 2 in three seasons. The remaining Premiership matches were far tighter, with Waikato Unicol’s 3-1 win at Otumoetai the only other match that was decided by greater than a single goal margin. Strikes from Brook Melody, Luke Goodwin and Riku Soejima helped get Unicol’s season off on a similar foot to 2017. The students, who were the form team over the first half of

last season before slumping to finish third, will be looking to maintain their challenge for the entire campaign this time around. Three points against a team whose pre-season form suggested they’d be another side to watch certainly would have eased any Unicol nerves. Last year’s runners-up, Comag Matamata Swifts, didn’t have things go anywhere near as well. After a goalless first half at West Hamilton United’s Weka Street, the hosts struck twice through Matthew Palmer and Hashim Noorzani to gain what proved to be a match winning advantage. Substitute Harry Conner bundled the ball home to set up a nervous finish but the hosts held on to win 2-1 in a fixture that was also the first Challenge Shield match of 2018. Tauranga Boys’ College and Melville United played out a thriller at Southey Field, with the Hamiltonians edging it 4-3 after a proper end to end encounter. Melville benefitted from a couple of Boys’ College own goals but also scored two of their own through Harry Coulson and Jordi Ditfort, while the hosts saw Oliver Harrop, Alexander Elliot and Scott Ellerington hit the back of the net. The other two games were both 1-0 home victories. Mercury Tokoroa, the second promoted side, got life in the Premiership underway in the best manner possible after Tamihana Wilson’s second half strike gave them a priceless three points over Tauranga Blue Rovers (previously Old Blues) at Strathmore Park. Te Awamutu snuck past Taupo thanks to Nathan Scott’s effort. From www.waibopfootball.co.nz.
