Michael’s Minute

Today we welcome Southern United to our interim home, McLennan Park. I want to thank the volunteers at Papakura City for hosting this game in a time where finding adequate field options in Hamilton were scarce. It is a challenge our region faces with summer sports dominating many of the fields at this time of the year and winter renovations taking place to repair fields and prepare them for next season. It is something we will need to be more proactive about next year, because while I appreciate other clubs helping us out, losing a true home fixture and keeping us on the road for so long is tough. The first two rounds have shown us first hand the quality of this year’s league. Lack of preparation, two tough teams and a new coaching staff undoubtedly played a part in the results, but they are not an excuse for us. We should have been better in both games but over 90 minutes we have not produced performances that have

warranted us getting any points. That said, both games did show that while we are yet to really find our rhythm as a group, there are aspects to pleased with. The last half against Mainland was a really disciplined performance, a performance that showed we can compete if we concentrate and focus on what we are trying to achieve. Yes we conceded two very late goals that knocked us back to earth abruptly after dong so well, but until that point we really offered some problems for a powerful and cohesive team like Mainland to solve, and for that reason we left Christchurch in a really motivated way to get back to work. The bye has let us work on some key areas we needed to focus on if we want to compete at this level. It has allowed us to freshen ourselves up and start again. Did we want a better start to this exciting league? Of course, but I speak of our ‘reality’ to the players a lot. The reality is we have conceded ten goals in two games and scored none. So we have worked really hard on both areas to reduce the opportunities for teams to score and keep the ball more and get in better parts of the field with good possession. Today we get to analyse our preparation and see the improvements we’ve made. I am full of confidence in this group of players and what they can achieve and collecting some points today would help validate some of the hard work the whole group has put in over the past two weeks. Thank you to all our supporters and sponsors who have made the trip and we look forward to an exciting game.

National Women’s League Round 3 The sides that contested last year’s National Women’s League final, Canterbury United Pride and Auckland, are leading the way again after both continued on their winning ways last weekend. The Pride recorded their third comprehensive victory in succession after accounting for winless Central 7-0 while Auckland found the going much tougher against Southern United, finally claiming all three points thanks to a spectacular late winner. Canterbury have been involved in the final of this competition in each of the past five years and are very much on track to repeat that feat after putting on yet another ruthless display. With the Pride in such rampant form, the prospects of Central getting off the mark in Palmerston North this afternoon did not look promising and an upset seemed even less likely after just four minutes when Amelia Abbott was on hand to tuck home a rebound for the visitors. Fielding such an array of talent at Massey University, Canterbury hardly needed a helping hand but they were granted one anyway as the unfortunate Mackenzie Barry – who otherwise put in a superb shift – turned a corner into her own net soon after and the result was seldom in doubt from that point on. Central did nearly get back into the

contest on 25 minutes when Lydia Bamford struck the bar but it was 3-0 at half-time after Canterbury’s lead was extended by a well-placed Gabrielle Rennie header. Another own goal, this time coming from Kate Watson, left Central four goals down early in the second half and the moment of the match was then produced just past the hour, Canterbury captain Annalie Longo showing her class with a stunning long-range strike to make it five. A pair of substitutes completed the scoring late on as Cody Taylor and Jayda Stewart both found the net. It was a much different story in Dunedin where Southern were looking to extend their unbeaten run to three matches and Auckland were returning to action after a weekend off with the bye. The visitors did not appear rusty in the opening stages as they began brightly but they found themselves a goal down at the break after a keenly-fought first half. A sizeable crowd had gathered in the main stand at Tahuna Park and they were on their feet just before the 20-minute mark when a good ball from the energetic Renee Bacon went in off Auckland’s Bianca Stiles for the third own goal of the day. With the central defensive pairing of Mikaela Hunt and Kelsey Kennard proving hard to breach, Auckland were not able to get back on level terms until the hour as Sam

Muirhead rifled a shot into the roof of the net. It looked like the points would be shared as the clock ticked deep into injury time but defending champions Auckland managed to take all three back north in dramatic fashion, Lucy Carter finding the top corner with an outstanding strike from a long way out to give her side an enjoyable plane ride home this evening. The result means Auckland are now in second place, three points off leaders Canterbury while Southern sit third. Locked on points with Southern are the Northern Lights, who picked up the first victory of their campaign with a 4-1 triumph over Capital in Wellington on Saturday. The Northern Lights continued their unbeaten start to the NWL season, earning a first threepointer of the campaign with a 4-1 triumph on the road at Capital. New coach Gemma Lewis and her side were forced to wait to get off the mark as they sat out the opening week with the bye but are now well-placed to launch a bid for the title after following up last weekend’s scoreless draw against Southern United with a strong second-half showing in Wellington this afternoon. While few would argue Northern did not deserve the points, an under-strength Capital side will

feel they came closer to matching the 2015 champions than the scoreline suggests and it took two late goals for the Lights to finally pull away at Memorial Park. Capital were not able to field talismanic striker Sarah Gregorius but did still boast senior international experience in fellow Football Fern Anna Green while Lewis was able to include five full internationals in goalkeeper Anna Leat, Kate Loye, Malia Steinmetz, Maggie Jenkins and Liz Savage. That gave Northern the edge on paper but the hosts threatened to cause an upset when Emma Main gave them the lead mid-way through the first half. But the advantage lasted only a matter of seconds as Northern found a swift response, Helena Kelderman slotting in an equaliser after catching Capital goalkeeper Ronisa Lipi in possession. It looked like the scores would be locked at 1-1 at the break as the half-time whistle drew near but the team talks were significantly altered when captain Claudia Bunge sidefooted home from close range to put Northern in front. With such experience and quality on their side, the visitors were not likely to squander their winning position and, with the wind now behind them, they went on to dominate the second half.
