Another Saturday, another couple of games at the Domain. After last week’s reversed fixture we have quite a run here during the opening stages of the season, which is a great thing for local fans. The main game today sees a couple of last season’s top sides square-off and in need of a result. Both Matamata and Unicol have somehow found a way to lose to West Hamilton during the opening couple of weeks and we’ll both be wanting to right a few wrongs today. Our opening day defeat at West Hamilton was compounded by a rather unlucky reversal against Tauranga Blue Rovers last time out. That match was a great example, if it was ever needed, that football’s never about getting what you deserve - it’s only, really, about sticking the ball in the net at one end and keeping it out at the other. It was great to see all our senior teams in action at home last weekend. We’ve made the change to Nike kit this season and we all looked great. Regardless of results, which are fleeting, we’re trying our very best to ensure our players and coaches are well looked after, and top quality playing equipment is just a part of this equation. We’re also pleased to have a solid group of local businesses supporting our club. I’d like to welcome one such company, Waharoa Transport, back on board this season as naming rights sponsor for the reserve team. It’s great that we’ll be able to see the logo of one of our longtime partners on the front of one of our teams’ shirts for this season and beyond (fingers crossed we’ve been able to get the shirts sorted in time for today’s game). I’m actually looking forward to today as it’s the school holidays so there’s no junior football in the morning. This will be a rarity over the next five months so I’ll be making the most of it and having a little lie in. Have fun today and I’ll see you on the touchline. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Two from two for three at summit Three teams maintain 100% records after the second set of 2018 Loaded WaiBOP Premiership matches. Papamoa, Melville United and West Hamilton United, all sides that finished outside the top five in 2017, picked up second wins of the season with varying degrees of comfort. Most impressive was West Hamilton, who overturned a half time deficit away from home to defeat Waikato Unicol 2-1. In what’s shaping up to be an open league, Unicol would be considered one of the favourites for the title, but second half goals from Chris Gardiner and Musa Jama ensured the points travelled west across Hamilton after the final whistle. Riku Soejima had given the students a half time lead they’ll be extremely disappointed to have lost. This was the second consecutive 2-1 victory for West Hamilton against teams that finished in the top three last season, following their opening day win against Matamata, and they’re rapidly moving themselves from dark horse status to contenders. Papamoa continued their rise from the ashes with a comfortable 3-1 win over Te Awamutu in their first home game of the season. Mitchell Hales scored twice, either side of another Andy Cooper (pictured above right) goal, to ease their way to the win. Jack Conner’s late goal was small consolation for the Waikato side who battled bravely against their more experienced opponents. Melville had the most routine Premiership victory of the weekend – a 5-0 hammering of cross town rivals Hamilton Wanderers. Most of the damage was done before half time as
Melville potted four of their five goals to leave the outcome in little doubt. Hamish Utteridge bagged his team’s first hat trick of the season and was joined on the scoresheet by Sok Ven and Harry Coulsen. Tauranga Boys’ College, Taupo and Tauranga Blue Rovers all notched their first victories of the season. Boys’ College ran riot in the second half of their match at Tokoroa to win 6-0 after holding a single goal lead at the break. Stanley Rust scored twice, while Scott Hawkins, Alexander Elliot, Scott Ellerington and Ryan Peddle also helped themselves for a young side that looks to be stronger than they have been in recent seasons. Taupo scored a goal in each half through Fin Smith and Robbie Williams to defeat Otumoetai 2-1 at Crown Park, in a result that would have eased the pain of their opening day loss at Te Awamutu. The visitors were one of the pre-season favourites for the title but their second loss in two games sees them sitting in second bottom. Comag Matamata Swifts are ahead of Otumoetai on goal difference after they also suffered their second reverse of the season, at home against Tauranga Blue Rovers. Reuben Henderson put the visitors ahead with an early deflected free kick, but goals from Dayne Willemsen and Reuben Wiglesworth had the Swifts in front nearing half time. Bobby Barnes rattled home a free kick to restore parity before the break then Thomas Crane pounced midway through the second half to give his side the points. From www.waibopfootball.co.nz.
