Welcome to the Domain for today’s Easter triple header. All three men’s teams are at home again today and we’ll be hoping the atmosphere, not to mention the weather, is similar to opening day a fortnight ago. A lot has happened on the field for all our teams over the last couple of weeks. Who would have thought we’d have seen eighteen goals in the Swifts’ first two Loaded WaiBOP Premiership matches? As a fan, it’s great to see the team banging in the goals, but I’m guessing it’s fairly obvious where the coaching staff will have placed most of their attention at training this week. Ronan might be right... we could just be the Newcastle-under-Kevin-Keegan of the 2017 Premiership. Given the records of both teams, today’s match against West Hamilton should see plenty of goals. Both of us, missing players, suffered disappointing results last week so it’s all about bouncing back today. Hopefully we can manage to bounce just a little bit higher than our visitors. Our other teams have begun encouragingly. The young Richardson Racing Stables Matamata reserve team got a good point against Tauranga before battling gamely against Tokoroa. The A team seem to be scoring goals and loving life, particularly after a 7-0 derby win over Cambridge. The Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies have put in some solid opening performances against strong Waikato Division A opponents. It’s early days yet. There are plenty more victories and defeats (hopefully not too many) to come over another long season. On a personal matter, I’d like to wish Paul Richardson well in the UK as he attends to important family matters. I know it’s tough for him to be away at this point of the season but it’ s important for family to always comes first. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Explaining the 2017 season (well, trying to...) Due to our 2016 finishing position we have ended up in Waikato Women’s Division A for 2017. To be fair, this came as a bit of a shock. There have been a lot of player movements and team withdrawals in the leagues above, which left us as the tenth-ranked Waikato team ahead of the 2017 season. The 10 team Waikato A league will run for one full round over nine weeks. This will decide the winner of Waikato Division A for 2017. After that, the top 4 teams from each of Waikato A and Bay One Ladies will combine for one full round over 7 weeks. This will decide the winner of the Federation league - a new competition in which points do not carry through. It is the intention that this will give those teams a taste of competition at that level, with a view to them playing there next season. The remaining six teams in Waikato A will start a new competition – the Waikato Women’s Bowl. As this is a new competition points will start from scratch.

Wide Open Loaded WaiBOP Premiership The 2017 Loaded WaiBOP Premiership, which is only two rounds in, is already shaping up as one of the most open contests in years. It seems just about any side, apart from perhaps a couple, is capable of taking points on any given Saturday, which means the title race could go deep into the season for the first time in a long while. Only one side, Waikato Unicol, still maintains a 100 percent record. Unicol ground their way to a 3-1 victory at West Hamilton United largely thanks to a second half double from substitute, Luke Goodwin. Ash Gower-Rudman opened the scoring for the students but West Hamilton’s Glenn Browne equalised not long after the re-start. The visitors strangled the life out of the contest, both through their performance and Goodwin’s goals. His first, which nudged Unicol ahead for a second time, came in the 56th minute, only a few minutes after he came on. His second, after a proper arm wrestle of a second half, came on 90 minutes to end the contest. Unicol’s victory saw the Federation Challenge Shield move for a second week. Their first defence will be at home to Tauranga’s Old Blues this coming Saturday. First round victors Old Blues and Matamata Swifts both tasted defeat on the road to slip down the table. After scoring a goal apiece in the first half, Rotorua United found a precious second after the break to run out narrow 2-1 winners and moved into mid-table.

The Swifts seem to like scoring goals this season. So much so, they put two through their own net during the first half of their match at Melville United, either side of a tidy Dylan Blair finish. Chris Walker and Dayne Willemsen narrowed the margin to one at half time but Matamata’s defensive frailties were exposed again just before the hour mark, letting in Conor Crowe to reestablish the hosts’ two goal lead. Even having let in four, Matamata created enough to take something from the match. Walker scored again with 12 minutes left but Melville held on and Blair snatched his second right on time for a morale boosting 5-3 win. Cambridge, Taupo and Otumoetai all remain unbeaten and fill out the rest of the top four spots, behind Unicol. Cambridge completed an expectedly comfortable 7-0 home win over a SGS Papamoa side that, by their own admission, is looking just to survive this season. Otumoetai would have been a little surprised to have found themselves two goals down at the break against Edmonds Judd Te Awamutu. Jack Connor’s double gave the visitors hope for an upset away win, but strikes from Jay Silcock and Dave Williams rescued a point for the men in green as it finished level at 2-2. Taupo won 2-1 at Tauranga Boys’ College to pick up a first win on their return to the Premiership.
