Welcome to the Domain for today’s triple treat of Matamata Swifts football. We’re pleased to host Internationale FC from Auckland for today’s ISPS Handa Chatham Cup preliminary round fixture. One of the big hopes when entering the Cup is that we get drawn against opponents we don’t normally play. We certainly have that today, as this is the first time our two clubs have met. Internationale (pictured opposite, top right) have a strong record in the Auckland Sunday Football Association’s Premier League, so this should be an entertaining encounter. Both clubs will be wanting to go on a bit of a cup run this year and maybe claim a notable scalp or two. If we look back to last season we’ll remember getting knocked out by fellow Loaded WaiBOP Premiership side, Otumoetai, who then took Waitakere City to extra time in the next round. Waitakere, of course, made it all the way to the final, only to lose rather dramatically to Birkenhead. Eventually matching up against one of the big boys is the hope, then. But that’s in the future. Let’s focus on today first. In the early games the Richardson Racing Stables Swifts Reserves host Old Blues Reserves in a match that was switched to Matamata only a couple of days ago, while the A team hosts neighbours Te Aroha, who’ll have a few familiar faces in their team. Managing our playing surfaces has been a challenge so far this season. It’s an ongoing issue but something we’re hopefully starting to get on top of. Given the Domain had a lot of work done on it earlier in the week, I’m not 100% sure (at time of writing) where everyone will be playing today. I’m sure, however, we’ll see you all in the clubrooms at some stage this afternoon. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Explaining the 2017 season (well, trying to...) Due to our 2016 finishing position we have ended up in Waikato Women’s Division A for 2017. To be fair, this came as a bit of a shock. There have been a lot of player movements and team withdrawals in the leagues above, which left us as the tenth-ranked Waikato team ahead of the 2017 season. The 10 team Waikato A league will run for one full round over nine weeks. This will decide the winner of Waikato Division A for 2017. After that, the top 4 teams from each of Waikato A and Bay One Ladies will combine for one full round over 7 weeks. This will decide the winner of the Federation league - a new competition in which points do not carry through. It is the intention that this will give those teams a taste of competition at that level, with a view to them playing there next season. The remaining six teams in Waikato A will start a new competition – the Waikato Women’s Bowl. As this is a new competition points will start from scratch.

Unicol Stay Perfect Could 2017 be the season Waikato Unicol finally mounts a serious Loaded WaiBOP Premiership title challenge? Their current form, which includes Saturday’s 5-0 home win over Tauranga’s Old Blues, suggests so. After easing into their campaign with a couple of comfortable Hamilton derby victories, Unicol served notice of their title credentials with the win at the weekend. A double from Ash Gower-Rudman, and another Gavin Clark goal, eased the students into a three goal lead at the break before a late double from Jono Sergeant finished off their beleaguered opponents. Too often in the past Unicol has promised much but fallen away over the course of a long season. While it’s still early days, it appears coach, Dan Goodwin, has recruited well and has his team playing the sort of football that is successful at Premiership level. Time will tell if this continues throughout a campaign where the mantle of favourites may end up sitting firmly on their shoulders. This win was Unicol’s first defence of the Federation Challenge Shield, after winning it at West Hamilton last Saturday, and also suggested next weekend’s Chatham Cup preliminary round match between the two sides at the same venue may not be something Old Blues will be looking forward to. With Cambridge’s match at Edmonds Judd Te Awamutu falling victim to ex-Cyclone

Cook, it was Taupo that moved into second place on seven points following a routine 3-0 win at bottom side SGS Papamoa. Given Papamoa’s form the Lakesiders may have expected to score a few more but, on their return to the Premiership, they’ll be happy to be unbeaten and playing well three games into the season. Matamata’s Chris Walker hit his third double in three games as the Swifts completed a 4-1 win over West Hamilton United to move into third. Walker’s first, on 20 minutes, gave his team the half time lead, before he doubled the margin three minutes into the second half. Alex Whitehead briefly had the visitors back in the game, but Dayne Willemsen’s strike just after the hour broke West Hamilton’s back. Sub, Reuben Wigelsworth, hit the fourth in the final minute for the free scoring Swifts. In other games, Rotorua United scored their second win in a row at home, 1-0 over Otumoetai thanks to a second half own goal from the visitors, to move into fourth, while Tauranga Boy’s College and Melville United shared eight goals but couldn’t be separated. Goals from Lewis Reid, Alex Elliott, Oliver Harrop and Kody Gorst helped Boys’ College to their second four goal haul of the season, while a Luis John double, an own goal and a late Harry Coulson strike ensured Melville left Southey Field with a point.
